COASTALKITTIES
BY STEVE WOODS
Not just one mother with two kittens but two mountain lion moms in two entirely different locations have given birth to the blue eyed beauties. Malibu is proud to welcome P-43 who is resting in the protection of a remote den near Malibu Creek State Park and P-44, also a new born female kitten makes her home a little further north, in the Santa Susana Mountains. Santa Monica Mountains Park Biologist Jeff Sikich has been tracking the movements of our local lion P-23 who is collared with a GPS device. Many of mom’s GPS points have been localized in one small area for several weeks which led researchers to believe she might have a litter. With a GPS device in hand he was able to track down the den location. At this point he’s typically crawling through thick brush on his knees and sometimes on his belly but located the den in an area with steep hillsides and large boulders. After about 45 minutes of searching, Sikich found P-43 underneath thick brush in the hollowed out area below. Many may recall last year when the mother P-23 had her picture taken by a motorist on Mullholland near Malibu Lake dragging a fresh deer kill away from the road. After years of training to minimize disturbance, only one biologist enters the den and then brings the kitten(s) to a work-up area at least 100 meters away. A small team of biologists then quickly assess the animal’s health, take blood and tissue samples, measurements, and mark the kittens in some way, such as with ear tags. Wondering where Mom is? Biologists go to the den during the day, while she’s out hunting or doing whatever moms do when they get a break from the kids! P-23’s last litter of kittens was fathered by her father, P-12, so it will be interesting to see what the DNA results find in terms of a mate. Although DNA results are still not available, Sikich thinks it is likely that P-38, a large male captured this past March, is the father. GPS data showed they traveled together for a few days three months before the kittens were born. “Mountain lions are solitary animals and typically adults only spend time together if they’re fighting or mating,” said Sikich. “They’re both alive and well, so my guess is that P-38 is the father.” Interestingly, these new research subjects are the only single litters we’ve documented since we started the study in 2002. These are the seventh and eighth litters we’ve marked at the den, though that number doesn’t include two other litters discovered when the kittens were already at least six months old. The other litters ranged in size from two to four kittens.
P-32 PERISHES
The National Park service has just reported some sad news.
Mountain Lion P-32 was struck and killed by a car while crossing the 5 Freeway on August 10. P-32 had recently been in mountains of western Malibu in April and although still a juvenile at about 21 months old, was likely trying to avoid other males and eventually establish his own range. Getting across the 101 was the first challenge in that effort. It was not, however, his last. Once past Highway 118 and the rolling Simi Hills, GPS tracking devices showed another male mountain lion P-38 that was hot on P-32’s trail. Though it’s impossible to determine intent based solely on GPS data, P-38 appeared to be closely following the younger lion through the Santa Susana Mountains until P-32 successfully crossed Highway 126 in the Santa Clara River Valley. Finally a friendly neighborhood? Not so for P-32. The National Park service believes another mountain lion, P-16 who is a very large lion, may have pushed him out into Los Padres National Forest. And it was in that, possibly still searching for a home range, that he met his fate attempting to cross another busy freeway. The journey of young P-32 is one of some successes -- at least four freeways crossed, but it is ultimately one that reminds us of the many dangers they face, both human-caused and natural. If it isn’t dodging cars, then it’s rat poison or inbreeding. In this case, it was most likely hulking males not wanting to share their range with other dudes.
P 32 takes his last selfie before getting killed by a motor vehicle while attempting to cross the 5 FWY.

These top of the food chain predators take localism to a very high stakes level.
SWAN SONG
When was the last time you saw a pair of white Swans at the Malibu Lagoon ? For the last month the newly restored channels have hosted a pair of graceful long necked Mute Swans. Long time locals cannot ever recall seeing a pair of swans for more than a day or two but these two lovers are inseparable and spend hours every day peacefully feeding on aquatic plant material. These non natives can eat up to 8 lbs of plant life such as algae, stems, leaves, and roots of aquatic plants, including pondweed, sedges, rushes, arrowleaf, wild celery, bulrush, burreed, and many others. Though two of these magnificent birds are a rare novelty, large populations of swans can be detrimental to native species of water fowl and local ecology. So far, these swans can be seen co-existing with the Cormorants, Egrets, Whimbrels, Kill Deer, various ducks, Coots and Herons on the Osprey Perch Island. For those with patience and an observant eye, these are some other great birds you can see at the Malibu Lagoon this August: Gadwall, Pied-billed and Eared Grebe, Brown Pelican, Great Blue Heron, a quickly growing population of new Egrets, Osprey, Red-shouldered Hawk, Snowy Plover, Spotted Sandpiper, Willet, Whimbrel, Ruddy Turnstone, Western Sandpiper, Heermann’s & Western Gulls, Least, Caspian, a growing group of Royal & Elegant Terns, Black Skimmer, Anna’s & Allen’s Hummingbirds, Belted Kingfisher, Rough-winged, Barn and Cliff Swallows, Oak Titmouse, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, Common Yellowthroat, California Towhee, Savannah & Song Sparrow, Redwinged Blackbird, Hooded Oriole, House Finch, American Goldfinch and the Coots are starting to return day by day .

IN THEM THAR
HILLS!
FADE IN: INT. SMOKY BACKROOM – NIGHT Four people are sitting around a table; RICH, JOE, MARLA and JUDY. A soft KNOCK on the door. Dave nods to Judy, who stands up and goes to open the door. ANGLE ON the door as the three others look up at a man entering the room carrying a large satchel. This is the applicant, ROBBIE. Judy resumes her seat, as the man stands awkwardly in front of the four. RICH (growling) So, how badly do you want our permission to dig for gold “in them thar hills?” In five different places, no less. ROBBIE (almost in a whisper) This badly. He pulls a fat envelope out of his satchel and slides it across the table to Rich.
ROBBIE(CONT’D) (proudly) $250,000 Rich opens the envelope, pulls out a sheaf of what look like several hundred $1,000 bills and stares at them in disbelief. RICH You’re kidding, right? ROBBIE (shuffling uneasily) Well, it’s all I could rustle up, Dave, swear to God.
RICH $250,000! God! Have you no respect for your neighbors? How all your digging will block their views of the ocean? Have you no shame? As Robbie looks down in the requisite state of mind, Rich winks at his companions, then turns back to Robbie. RICH (CONT’D) I just know you can do better than this, Robbie. You know how almost the whole community is opposed to this? Have you no respect for other people’s feelings? There’s a long silence. Then Robbie gives a deep sigh and reaches into his satchel to produce an envelope identical to the first one. ROBBIE I’ll double it to $500,000. RICH And all the thousands - millions even - who come here every year just for this wonderful view? You care nothing for them? Another deep sigh from Robbie. ROBBIE Okay. I’ll triple it to $750,000 RICH Robbie, Robbie. Sometimes I really wonder about you. You’d do anything for gold, wouldn’t you?(he chuckles) I’ve heard of golddiggers, but this beats all. ROBBIE Quadruple it. One million. Another envelope slides across the table. RICH Think of the children, Robbie. The generations to come. Think of your own legacy. It can’t always be gold, gold, gold. Tell you what, double that, and we have a deal. Robbie gives his deepest sight of all and four more envelopes join the previous ones.

OPINION ROBBIE Two million dollars. Rich looks round the table.

RICH What do you say, ladies and gentleman? Aye or nay? GEOFF/MICKIE/KATHIE (in unison) Aye. Rich stands up to shake Robbie’s hand.
RICH You drive a hard bargain, Robbie. I respect that. We’re all good businessmen – women – here. His companions nod in agreement as Robbie leaves the room, a look of triumph on his face. As soon as Robbie has closed the door behind him, Rich grins at his companions. RICH Democracy. Ain’t it beautiful?
FADE TO BLACK SCROLL across the screen: THE PRECEDING DIALOGUE IS BASED ON THE HAGGLING BETWEEN ROBERT GOLD OF BRP MANAGEMEMT, LLC AND THE MALIBU PLANNING COMMISSION OVER HOW BIG A “DONATION” GOLD SHOULD MAKE TO GET APPROVAL TO BUILD FIVE 11,000 SQUARE FOOT MONSTROSITIES ON MALIBU BLUFFS, WHICH WOULD BLOCK EVERYONE ELSE’S VIEW OF THE OCEAN. THE HAGGLING STARTED AT $250,000, THEN ESCALATED TO $500,000, $750,000, $1 MILLON, FINALLY SETTLING AT $2 MILLION.
Recently, the Coastal Commission voted in favor of the Crummer project, which will destroy the views from Bluffs Park with funds that will be diverted to the Mountains Recreation and Conservancy Authority (MRCA) as an agreed monetary bribe of $2-4 million to help destroy the pristine untouched ecosystem for a year around campground with campfires in Puerco Canyon.
At the July 20th special City Council meeting on the Whole Foods in the Park Project, Malibu local Andy Lyon profoundly called out the traffic engineering firm who grossly underestimated traffic counts in the Environmental Impact Report:
If this does not confound your senses of what the Coastal Commission is supposed to stand for, the City of Malibu just extended it’s contract with traffic engineering firm Kimley-Horn for another year. This is the same firm that has stated that traffic has decreased in Malibu over the last 20 years .
“I WANT YOU TO DO MY TAXES”
Oh, and just in case you missed it, the City has also hired an ace building expediter, Chris Deleau, from Schmitz and Assoc. to the planning staff. This private sector lobbyist will surely be a plus for commercial developers who are looking forward to push through the build-out of the open spaces in the Civic Center.
- Andy Lyon
The City Council’s response? They extended the firm’s contract for another year.

SEEING
RED
BY STEVE WOODS
If you’ve gone to the beach lately and it seems something is missing, you’re right it. The yellow 4x4 Ford lifeguard trucks that you’ve come to know so well are gone, switched out for brand new 4x4 Red Toyotas. It wasn’t too many years ago that Nissan had the LA County contract for lifeguard trucks, then Ford scored the bonus of showing off their 4x4 trucks on the sand and now Toyota will get the chance to showcase their new line of trucks to millions of beach users all along LA County beach shorelines. The Fire Protection District of Los Angeles County has entered into a new Lifeguard Vehicle Sponsorship Agreement, with Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., which will allow for the Districts Lifeguard Division use of at least sixty-five new Toyota vehicles for beach patrol and emergency response. The Agreement will consist of a two-year term with two one-year extension options. The two-year Agreement includes forty-five Toyota Tacoma model trucks, eighteen Toyota Tundra model trucks, two Sequoia model Sport Utility Vehicles, and at least $200,000 in safety equipment to outfit the vehicles. The Agreement has a current wholesale value of approximately $2,800,000 including the safety equipment. In exchange, Toyota will receive the exclusive right to advertise itself as the Official Truck/Vehicle and the Official Vehicle Sponsor of the Los Angeles County Lifeguards It is not just the truck brand that has changed but the color also. It is true that the LA county Life Guards are affiliated with the LA County Fire Dept and we all are accustomed to red colored fire vehiclesbut now it will become more difficult to distinguish life guard trucks from Fire dept vehicles. So if you are at the beach and are looking for help from a yellow lifeguard truck, don’t, seek red instead!
SURF INTERVIEW:
LYONHERRON
BY @SHANNONREPORTING Salt water cures. Proof? Meet Lyon Herron. Friend to many, and what some would call a walking, talking miracle. He’s a local Malibu surfer and cancer survivor. And last year he found out that he had 12 active tumors in his body. Lyon turns to surfing and photography as means of survival. They are his vices, organic, natural and they don’t come with hospital bills. His good energy and positive outlook on life are contagious. So is his smile. I met Lyon this summer after the 9th annual Malibu Invitational, a benefit event dedicated to helping Lyon raise money for his hospital bills. We shared a few waves down at Zuma Beach. Laughing, joking, frothing out like a typical 23-year-old surfer would. Granted, he probably wasn’t stressing about his upcoming chemotherapy session… because that’s what surfing tends to do to its users. The ocean cures, heals, answers many of life’s complicated questions. A calming, healing environment with side effects that include: smiling, having fun and radiating happiness. This is a story about local community. It’s a story of courage, strength, and optimism. About surfers helping surfers. Neighbors helping neighbors. Lyon’s story might make you cry, it might make you laugh, and it will definitely put life into perspective. MEET LYON HERRON: “This past year was a whirlwind of change in my life. We found out that I had twelve active tumors in my body. I got sober. That was a huge change though, a transformation health wise towards self-preservation. There have been a lot of hard times in my life where surfing has saved me: before surgeries, after surgeries, healing... During chemotherapy I would go surf. I am doing kimo right now and I surf just about every day, making sure that I’m connected with the ocean, because to me, the ocean is the biggest healing substance there could ever be. Salt water cures.” MALIBU INVITATIONAL: “This year’s Malibu Invitational was its 9th year running, It started off in 2007 when I had a large surgery that our insurance wasn’t covering because it was out of our network area. It was in Cleveland; insurance denied coverage for a $50,000 surgery - the minimum pricing. We didn’t have the money to do it, so the community at Malibu High sold wristbands/ bracelets and t-shirts, accepted donations, and that started trend of fundraising. The contest was after my surgery, to raise money to go back in for future test studies. I’ve always been in debt with hospitals; the bills are beyond expensive. Thanks to the local community, I was off to do intensive studies, traveling the world to find new doctors, different medicine. I had another surgery... another tumor growth. Thankfully, I had a two year grace period when I was really healthy. During those years, we donated the content earning to Jimmy Gamboa’s foundation, THERAsurf, which is super rad. Another year money was donated to The Young and Brave Foundation which is a 501c3 non-profit I work with. They’ve helped me out a lot in the past year.” THERASURF FOUNDATION: “My family has been in Malibu since 1947. My great-grandparents moved in with my grandma when she was six-months old. We’ve been on the same property ever since. We started with 14 acres, then sold 8 of them to the county, which they built Kanan on. I was pretty much raised by a ton of kids. My mom was 16 when she got pregnant, 17 when she had me. She had a 10-year-old brother, 13-year-old brother, and an 18-year-old brother. And my grandmother was there…. a house of chaos and awesomeness. Kids raising kids. My uncles were the same age as the Gamboas, so I grew up watching Jimmy surf. He’s one of my favorite surfers in the whole world. Watching him surf my entire life, and then seeing him progress into the man he is now and seeing where he’s taken it with Therasurf and giving back to the kids with special needs... Therasurf influences me to be a better person daily. Just seeing the joy, the smiles, and the laughter the kids get out of it being able to go surf. And I get to go surf any time I want - granted my health. Just seeing how precious life can really be, and how special surfing is, and how much it really changes and bring so much happiness to people. That right there influences me and gives me so much motivation to just be healthier, be stronger, and to be a better person.” VICE: PHOTOGRAPHY “My vice now is photography. That’s what I do. I’ve been shooting photos since I was a kid. I’ve always loved it, and as of recently, I’ve really dedicated and motivated myself to do it as a career. It’s a great outlet to release tension, expressing my artistic side. If I’m not able to surf because I am not feeling well enough to go in the water, I go shoot photos. Whether it be shooting commercial, shooting swim lines, clothing lines... That’s my vice. I shoot photos. I have my camera gear in my car at all times. I like simplicity, crafting something totally different. I shoot everything manual. Water photography is challenging, trying to shoot on automatic, but it’s as if it takes your creative license away. You want to have that hands-on feeling, so it’s a little more difficult in the water. Speed blurs are some of my favorites in the world. High f-stops and slow shutter speeds. That’s all it is. People like blur, motion captivates. Capturing a shallow depth of field, paying attention to detail. Little things that are so simplistic. but can make a big difference in how you shoot.” SALT WATER: CURES “The ocean is 100% the most curing substance in the world. I had a huge surgery in 2007, the main one that we did the contest for. I had all my abdominal muscles removed, removed my left hip. Doctors told me not to go in the water for three months. I was back in the water after six weeks. I give it all back to the ocean, soaking in salt water. I remember after that intense surgery, the Malibu Invitational contest was going on and I told Mom, “Hey, I’m gonna go surf.” It was tiny. I took out a 10-ft longboard and knee paddled out there and caught a wave. I was supposed to catch only one or two waves, and I caught 25. The next day I brought a single fin down there, and the next day I rode a shortboard. And I was back in the water, off running again.” View Lyon Herron’s photography on Instagram @lyonh_photo Support Therasurf.org & TheYoungAndBrave.com More work by journalist Shannon Marie Quirk on ShannonReporting.com & Instragram @shannonreporting

ISISWANTS TO KILL
BY DAVID STANSFIELD EDITED BY ALLEN WALDMAN
YOU
There are numerous exhaustively detailed books coming out now about ISIS that are much too long and complex for more than 1% of readers. The ISIS/Terrorism series of volumes are unique in being brief illustrated books, consumable in one sitting by the 99%. Volume One contains over 100 images – maps, graphics and photos – and is divided into nine chapters. Here’s the first one.
It began with the announcements, plastered all over town. Every head of every household was to bring all the females in his care to headquarters to be used as sex slaves by the “liberators.” Those who refused were visited by a party of fighters. First, they brutalized, then tortured, and ultimately shot the master of the house, along with every other male, young or old, in his family. Then they gang raped all the females in his family, young or old. If any girl or woman resisted, they beat her with the butts of their guns until she was close to death. Then they gang raped her all over again. Then they turned off the oil. It wasn’t difficult, given that they controlled the countries that possessed two-thirds of all the oil in the world. Finally, they used the tunnel. There were many such tunnels, but this one was only 600 yards long, and straight as a die, funneling cocaine and heroin and desperate human beings – and now the nuclear device – from Tijuana to Otay Mesa, a suburb of San Diego, where they pushed the button. And that was the end. Could this happen here? Yes. Their name is ISIS and they are planning to do all this and a great deal more in the name of God.

OPINION
1. THE CALIPHATE
So what on earth is ISIS? Let’s start with the name itself. ISIS stands for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. It is also referred to in English as ISL, which stands for the Islamic State of the Levant. “Levant” is the French for “rising,” as in the place where the sun rises, the Eastern end of the Mediterranean, which stretches from Israel and Palestine to Iraq. (*Image #1) But the Arabic name of this organization gives much more meaning than the English acronym ISIS. It is ad-dawlat al-islamiyya fī’l-iraq wa’sh‘-sham, reduced in Arabic to the acronym Da’ish: “The Islamic State in Iraq and Sham.” The word Sham is the key; it resonates in the Arabic- speaker’s mind on multiple levels. What does it mean? Well, one thing it does NOT mean is the truncated Syria that was created by the French in 1922.
1. The place where the sun rises.
Rather, it means the “North,” the “Greater Syria that encompasses, not only the artificial states the British and the French carved out of the Ottoman Empire after World War One: Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and subsequently Israel, but also Cyprus and part of southern Turkey. (*Image #2) For most of the last four thousand five hundred years, nearly all of these phony modern states were one, not only under the empires of the Ottomans, the Arabs, the Byzantines, the Romans, the Greeks and the Persians, but also under the AsSYRIAns, and even more ancient civilizations before them, dating all the way back to 2,500 B.C. Sham’s roots run very deep – and dangerously – indeed, as we shall see. However, ISIS’s ambitions stretch a lot farther afield than Sham. Its ultimate goal is to gain control not only the entire Middle East from Morocco to Iran... (*Image #3) 2. SHAM: “Greater Syria”.
...but of the entire Islamic world, which includes a score of African countries, numerous parts of Russia, plus Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajkistan, Turkmanistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia. (*Image #4) Why is ISIS doing this? Because its members want to set up what they call a “caliphate” over this entire world. No small feat, since this Islamic world numbers 1.6 billion people; the planet’s second largest religion after Christianity, which weighs in at 2.2 billion. What is a caliphate? To answer that we have to go back over fourteen hundred years to 610 A.D. and a cave near the city of Mecca in what is now Saudi Arabia, where an Arab man by the name of Muhammad has just been visited by the Angel Gabriel. (*Image #5)
3. The Modern Middle East.
Gabriel asks Muhammad to recite a series of verses, which he assures him come directly from God. Over the next twenty-two years, Gabriel is to visit Muhammad again and again with more and more verses from God for him to recite, all of which are subsequently to be chunked together into “The “Recitation,” al-qur’ān, or Koran as we mangle it.
*Image #6
4. The Middle East from Morocco to Iran.
Several verses of the Qur’ān stand out from the rest because they contain the first ever appearances of the word Muslim. Here’s an example: “We are supporters of God. We have believed in God and testify that we are Muslims [i.e., that we are 5. The angel Gabriel speaks to submitting to Him].” Muhammad.
All of today’s 1.6 billion Muslims have to believe that the period between 610 and 632 when Muhammad received God’s revelations represents the one and only period during which God spoke to man since the universe began. This is the basis of Islam itself, the foundation of the faith of every Muslim. Precisely because God only spoke to Muhammad, and precisely because He spoke in Arabic, all Muslims have to believe every word of the following Arabic sentence: 6. The Holy Koran.
lā ʾilāha ʾillā-llāh, muḥammadun rasūlu-llāh There is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God In fact, that’s all you have to say to become a Muslim in the first place. Try it: lā ʾilāha ʾillā-llāh, muḥammadun rasūlu-llāh Congratulations, you’re a Muslim. Now back to the caliphate and what it means. Muhammad may have been the only man who ever lived whom God contacted directly, but even he couldn’t live for ever. As founder of the new religion of Islam, he was eventually able to recruit enough of his fellow desert Arabs to unite most of Arabia into a single religious entity under Islam. But then in early June, 632 A.D., the Messenger fell ill with a fever and died. The immediate question was, who would be Muhammad’s successor? Or as they say in Arabic, his khalīfah, his caliph? Who would be the man to rule over the Messenger’s succession, his khilāfa, his caliphate? As it happened, the majority of the followers of Muhammad elected his father-in-law and close companion, Abu Bakr, to be Islam’s first caliph as he announces ISIS’s goal of taking over the world. (*Image #7)

The
STORY
behind the story
The Local really is local.
This is what happened: A Malibu resident by the name of Allen Waldman was reading an article about the Middle East David Stansfield had written for the paper and found it extremely interesting. The end of the article referred to David’s books, One in particular was a novel set in the midst of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Take Nothing for Granted. Allen immediately went to Bank of Books on Point Dume in Malibu and bought a copy. As he began to read the book, he found himself noticing more and more references to his own life: where he lived, what he drove, what clothes he wore, etc. It was uncanny. To the point where he began to wonder whether this was a case of identity theft. Had David been peering through his living room window? He wrote to David only half jokingly accusing him of just that, but amazingly it turned out it was entirely coincidental. An astonishing sort of synchronicity. It also turned out that David lived just around the corner from Allen, but they’d never met. So they got together and talked for hours about the Middle East. Finally, Allen said to David: You lived and worked with these people. You speak their language. Why don’t you just write your own personal history of the Middle East and how it got into such a terrible mess?
DAVID STANSFIELD and ALLEN WALDMAN
Well, after they got to page 92, Allen said, this is enough, we don’t need all this. Let’s just talk about “the problem,” ISIS, this horrible thing that’s going on in the world, and let’s make it easy for those of us who don’t know any of the history to understand why we’re in this situation right now. As they were talking, Allen said, David, you have so much to say, but you’ve got to get it down to just the heart and core of the problem. As the writing progressed, David started to add pictures. What could be better than a picture? How can you even begin to write about the horror of a little seven-year old girl with a gun in her hand and about to kill somebody? But this picture says it all and we decided to combine words and pictures and keep it short, make it easy for people to read in one sitting. We will continue to monitor the mountain of information and misinformation coming out every day about ISIS, and in future volumes we will present the real facts from multiple points of view. Volume Two will be “The Mind of ISIS.” How can people think like this? Are they are all psychopaths? Or is it religious mania? Brainwashing? Nostalgia for the Golden Age of Islam? Identity conflict? Income inequality? Repressed sexuality? “Lord of the Rings” type magical thinking? Or the profound psychological effects of the Arabic language and its writing system on the ISIS/Islamic mind? How how about the book cover? asked David. It’s got to be compelling, replied Allen. Look at me, look at me! I want to kill you.

MOTION is LOTION BY DIANA NICHOLSON
Free your mind, free your body… Which comes first? Often it’s the mind that unlocks the body and sometimes it’s the other way around. Some people are so tight that sitting cross leg in a yoga class is not an option for them. We can be so tight, like we’re bracing for a storm and the harder we hold, the tighter we become... constricting our movement like a prison. We pay a plumber to keep the water flowing in our home, why not invest in our body to keep it all moving freely? Our body is our house; if you’re so tight that when you bend over you can’t reach your knees, let alone your toes (and you know who you are) then finding a professional to stretch you out can unlock it all, allowing you to move with increased circulation for the joints and muscles, reducing inflammation. PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) resistance stretching is recognized as one of the most effective forms of stretching to increase range of motion in the joints, both active and passive. It’s been used since 1950 and proven to be effective for anyone that’s active (or wants to be). It is a skilled stretching technique we use at Malibu Beach Pilates that re-educates muscles and restores healthy resting lengths, using reflexes to assist muscular relaxation. Getting stretched out is “freedom”. PNF can be a solution for you if: a) In your yoga class, you can’t cross your legs into the lotus position. b) If you wake up stiff or in pain. c) If one extremity (arms, legs, etc.) is tighter than the other. d) In all the exercise routines and everything else we do you find yourself not flexible enough. Think of a rubber band that has been left in the drawer, unused and neglected for a long time. What does it look like? Dull, white-coated, shrunken. What happens when you try to use it? It can snap! Its flexibility and potential has been lost because it wasn’t used. By unlocking movement restrictions, our performance and comfort are noticeably improved. When we’re more limber, the stronger and better balanced we are in all aspects of our life. The tightness can sometimes result from lack of movement, or a long process of repetitive movements reinforcing some muscle imbalances in your body. But, even if it’s a result of some form of trauma restricting current flexibility, it’s possible there was some long term imbalance that left your body more vulnerable. So, it probably didn’t develop overnight. For the very best results, work with someone skilled in PNF… You’ll be using stretches that are well matched to your needs using proper form and technique, move throughout your day more effectively, with better posture and less stress.
Pilates instructor Diana Nicholson trained under Master Teacher, Marie Jose Blom Lawrence at “Long Beach Dance and Conditioning” She is a certified “Health Coach” from “The Institute for Integrative Nutrition” and a graduate of the California Healing Arts College”, as well as Yoga Certified through UnityOneYoga.
Keep in mind, that because PNF works your muscles in an isometric way, it’s also a whole body workout. To quote one of my clients, “I felt like I just ran to Calabasas and back.” Remember, motion is lotion, move freely, and treat your body well! malibubeachpilates.com

PLYOMETRICS/HIIT TRAINING INCREASE YOUR CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH IN 20 MINUTES! BY TED MC DONALD Interval training and HIIT (high intensity interval training) is all the rage these days and I’m no exception in believing it’s benefits. It’s simple to do, doesn’t take a lot of time and you don’t need equipment. Simply use your body and the willingness to push hard for short periods of time; intervals. Some of the benefits of HIIT workouts, according to the American College of Sports Medicine (acsm.org), are aerobic and anaerobic fitness, better blood pressure, increased cardiovascular health, increased insulin sensitivity (opposite of insulin resistance or pre-diabetes), better cholesterol profiles and decreased body fat while strengthening muscles. Seems like the best thing you can do for yourself, right? Well, it’s definitely one of the better things. I’m an endurance athlete, yoga teacher and personal trainer. I always have my clients do a HIIT routine at least once a week. Depending on what they’re training for and what their physical load will be, I will prescribe 1-3 routines. For a HIIT workout, you can use it in running, cycling, swimming, hiking, rowing, cross-country skiing and more. Other benefits of the HIIT workouts are increased calorie burn. Though there is debate, some studies show that you continue to burn calories even after your workout. Your HIIT training is going to make you a better runner or cyclist for the long haul. Studies show that 8-12 reps of intensity will increase your overall fitness levels. For instance, if you do a cycling HIIT workout, you’ll ride better on your longer ride such as a century or an ironman. Your running HIIT workout will help increase your marathon times, etc. Once a week is enough if you’re mixing up your workouts and including hiking, running, cycling, yoga, etc. It’s a great way to build muscle and build aerobic ability. You may remember sprints on the track from junior high and high school. Those are perfect HIIT workouts and they always made it easier to run your 5k. An easy one is 100 meter sprint followed by 100 meter jog. Otherwise know as “sprint the straights, jog the rounds.” The instructions are simple: warm up for at least 3 minutes (cycling, jogging, running in place, etc.) use 30-60 second intervals of almost sprinting (it doesn’t work if you don’t work hard)! You want to make yourself as uncomfortable as you can handle for the said length of time. rest for 60-75 seconds, but you’ll continue moving. If you use a heart rate monitor, your rest would be about 40% below your max. i.e. easy jog, steady pedaling. repeat the sprinting at least 8 times working your way up to 15. cool down with a few minutes of your desired discipline. You can use air squat variations as well (see photos). Feel free to mix it up and create variety. Do the workouts anywhere, anytime (even in a small airBNB in Colorado)! To reap the most results do the routine for at least 20 minutes. There are no excuses not to get that heart pumping! Start with your daily walk and add some power walking. However you need to do it, make it happen and let me know how it goes!! I’m on twitter @teddymcdonald

DOG GROOMING BY ROBERT CABRAL
To bathe or not to bathe your dog. Some people may say that dogs in the wild and wolves don’t bathe, so why should I bathe my dogs? Simply put: Because we care! There are some important aspects to remember when grooming your dogs; it’s not just about shampooing, there are other things to consider. Grooming should be done by a professional or at least by someone who has a good understanding of the process, or else you could do more harm than good. I suggest picking a good quality pet shampoo depending on your dog’s coat. Rarely if ever do I suggest using human shampoo on your dog. Be careful to break down (dilute) the shampoo before applying it to your dog. Because your dog’s coat is so dense it can be almost impossible to rinse all of the soap out of a thick-coated dog. Protect your dog’s eyes and ears. Shampoo can burn a dog’s eyes and ear infections are common if a dog’s ears get wet and don’t dry properly. This is common in dogs with narrow ear canals and floppy ears. After rinsing your dog, you’ll need to towel dry him and preferably blow-dry him. I use a commercial dryer, but a high velocity blow dryer can suffice. Be careful not to make it too hot. One of the most important aspects of grooming is a toenail trimming. Long toenails can affect a dogs overall walk. Always be sure to keep your dog’s nails short. If they are long, start by trimming them a little each week and once they’re short, keep them short. I use a Dremmel tool, but many groomers opt for clippers. Both are good, but be careful if you trim your dog’s nails not to cut into the quick. Your dog’s ears should be cleaned regularly, in particular dogs with floppy ears. Keeping your dog’s ears clean is vital to good health. If your dog has a bad smell coming from his ears, get him to your vet right away. Remember, if your dog swims in the ocean, that doesn’t count as a bath, nor does a dip in your pool. Salt water, Bromine and Chlorine can all dry out your dogs skin. If your dog likes to swim, be sure he gets groomed afterwards to protect his coat. Dogs should be groomed regularly that can be once a week if it’s in your budget, but at least a couple of times a month if they are inside and outside dogs. Be sure that your new dog gets used to being groomed early on to prevent him from having an eversion to being handled. Grooming is a great way to get a dog acclimated to strangers and different environments. It also gets a second set of eyes on your dog in the event that something might be wrong. Be careful who you pick to groom your dog. You want someone who is qualified and cares about your dog as much as you do. Here in Malibu we have two great grooming options, Malibu Grooming Company at Carbon Beach and Sherman’s Place at Busch and PCH.

THE
LAST DINOSAUR An Everyman’s Guide To The New Woman By Marlon Young Continued... You’re saying right now that there is nothing so great about that. After all, it’s not like you’re some Neanderthal going around demanding that people do as you say. You simply expect people to do their job that they’re being paid for and as long as they do that, you got no problem. But you do have a problem. Have you noticed how bad the service community is today? You’re standing in line at the video store waiting to rent the movie you’ve waited for so you can get home, relax and watch it and the only two people behind the counter are busy talking to each other about last night’s “American Idol” episode. Or, you go to the same coffee shop that you go to every morning to order the same cup of coffee that you’ve ordered for the past two years but you have to tell the guy behind the register what you’re drinking; The guy who takes your order MOST OF THE TIME when you come by! Our Dads didn’t have those problems. They didn’t. There was a pride in workmanship and an atmosphere of serving other people regardless of how bad your day was. Remember when you were a kid and your Dad pulled up to the gas pump? You know where this is going, right? A guy came running out with a rag hanging out of his back pocket, said “Good afternoon,” or whatever time of day it was, and asked your Dad what he needed and proceeded to supply it. “Ten bucks unleaded, please.” He pumped the gas, checked the oil, squeegeed the windshield, checked the air in the tires and was glad to do all of it. That guy doesn’t exist anymore, does he? No, he doesn’t. A lot of those personal touches disappeared because of automation and I understand that. But, goddamn! Can I get a “Hello, how you doing?” and a look directly in the eyes when I’m standing in front of the teller at the bank? Is that asking too much? Yes. Yes, it is and here’s why. The rules under which the society used to operate were all made by men. They were based on what men thought was simple problem-solving. Get the job done regardless of how you feel. Headache? Come to work. Depressed? Come to work. Wife killed in a train wreck? Take the day off to identify the body and come to work tomorrow. That may seem harsh today but what it accomplished for them was an ability to separate your professional life, your work life, from your personal life. You never knew if the gas station attendant was having a shitty day because he always smiled and helped you with what you needed. He never knew how you felt, either, because you didn’t offer up that information. “Don’t talk about family business outside of this house.” That’s what Dad said and that’s what you did. Partly because it was nobody else’s business what was going on in your personal life but more so because everyone else had their own problems to worry about. They didn’t bring theirs to work to burden other folks with and would hope you would do the same. That way, the workplace remained only about work stuff. Maybe a little bit about what you did over the weekend, what was on the Huntley-Brinkley report last night, what’s going on with the kids but that was the extent of it. Even if some of that information was emotional for you, it didn’t effect how well you did your job because you didn’t allow it to. Like during Vietnam. Visions on the news of soldiers dying and funerals and other sorrowful events. Our parents still had to go to work and get their jobs done. The country still had to progress, right? No time to just think about you and how you felt about your singular problem in the workplace. We still had muscle cars to build. Still had to go to the moon. Still had to finish building the Twin Towers. Still had to pump gas and clean your windows with a smile. That’s how our Dads and all the Dads before them rolled, man, because life was not about the individual. There was a big ole’ national community to think about and you were expected to do your part to help keep it moving forward. Don’t litter. Remember the American Indian with the tear running down his cheek? “Only YOU can prevent forest fires.” That’s what Smokey the Bear said as if it were solely your responsibility to be sure the entire forestland was preserved! You did it, though. You at least tried to do your part because it was drilled into your brain. You were all but forced to think about people other than yourself. You tried not to litter. Didn’t throw cigarettes out of you car window. Said “Yes, ma’am and “No, sir” because it made those people feel like they were respected. And if they felt respected, they were less likely to be shitty to the next person and more likely to pass that feel-good on to someone else. Everyone benefits. What a concept! It’s what happened, though. My Dad and his pals all lived like that and with the exception of a few jack-asses who didn’t want to play by the rules and instead be total law-breaking, disrespectful jerks, people were cool with each other. They thought outside of themselves and realized it wasn’t just about them. Ever hear your Dad talk about the days when people left their doors to their homes unlocked? Some of you will say that’s all bologna and that people have always been the same and that only technology around us has changed thus forcing us to adapt differently to each other. Well...you’re wrong. If you’re around my age or older, you remember how it was and you know it’s changed and you remember when it changed. Or, at least, remember when it started to change. If you don’t remember, ask your Dad. He’ll tell you. It changed dramatically. Why did it change? Technology? We didn’t start to become heavily dependent on today’s technology until the past fifteen years or so. There was no home computer or X-boxes so you still had to relate to people. Couldn’t isolate yourself at home and chat online. Couldn’t text instead of call. Why did it change, then? The women’s movement. By the way, for those of you who are a little too anal-retentive, when I say the “women’s movement,” I am speaking about the second-wave of the women’s movement that began around nineteen-sixty. This was when women began pushing for full economic and social equality. This is when men began to feel directly effected. You can say you have legal rights all you want but if you never show up at my job and have your rights shoved down my throat by my boss, it doesn’t effect me. Which is what the movement had been up until the sixties. But then, the movement hit a new, accelerated push assisted by the civil rights movement. It was coming like a freight Photos by Denise Malone train and we men were walking along the tracks thinking we had all the time in the world to jump out of the way and high-five each other as we laughed and shouted “Damn, that was close!” Marlon Young is an actor, screenwriter, and author of the most succinct, easy-to-digest book that addresses Continued... the fundamental problems in relationships to come along in a while. www.thelastdinosauraudiobook.com
