HASHTAGS: #curatorsofcoastalculture #malibu #90265 The French flag is displayed at Mammoth Mountain as a tribute to the victims of the Paris attack.
Opening Day at Mammoth Mountain came early this year with the predictions of El Nino already beginning to manifest substantial snowfall. Not long after the the Veterans Day Celebration to commemorate the official opening of the winter season on the mountain, the world became captivated by the ISIS attacks in Paris. Kudos to our favorite Sierra spot for paying tribute to victims of this brutal attack. Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Paris. #peaceforparis. -Cece Woods

BUMPY
ROAD
BY SAM HALL KAPLAN
Traffic on the Point was the subject Thursday night at the elementary school, featuring Malibu’s flummoxed city government with a consultant shield trying to explain its planning process to a gathering of residents. It was mostly an embarrassment, as I state in my commentary for our local 97.5 KBU and on radiomalibu.net It appeared to me that the city’s lumbering bureaucracy, in contracting for so called traffic mitigations, based its decisions not on need or professional studies, but on questionable petitions and an undiscerning city council. Simply stated, politics rather than public safety. The meeting called by the City Council had been prompted by a mixed reaction by residents to a proposal to add speed humps to select streets. The proposal had been wending its way through the council for approvals, very much under the radar, despite its pledge of transparency and its bloated community relations staff. At issue, was the city’s handling of a $427 ,000 paving contract that included 27 speed humps on select streets. Identified were Fernhill, Portshead, Selfridge, Grayfox and Wildlife. Happily the item was noted by a vigilant KBU; questions were raised in this commentary, and circulated by the increasingly ubiquitous Point Dume town crier, Nextdoor Neighbors . Most everyone in a polite audience of about 40 seemed to agree that the Point had speeding and parking problems. What was not clearly agreed upon was what should be done to solve the problems. Questions were raised whether speed humps and bumps were effective, past reports and studies traffic were unearthed, thanks to diligent residents, raising more questions, and further fueling residents concerns. There was strong personal testimony in favor, and against, speed humps. Most telling was a declaration by Chief Anthony Williams that the Fire Department was unalterably opposed to humps or bumps, or whatever slowed response time. Taking exception was councilman Skylar Peak. He had prompted the meeting, for which he was thanked. His convoluted comments were not thanked. Speeding on Dume Drive was a particular concern to residents on the street. It had not been slated for humps. Also cited was traffic at times exiting the Point to the PCH, and the lack of clearly marked cross walks on Heathercliff . Also raised was the parking problem on Grasswood, particularly on beach days when the street is all but impassable for emergency vehicles and neighbors walking. The city said it had reviewed the problem with Coastal Commission, and hopefully a solution will be included in a new traffic plan. City manager Jim Thorsen added that the meeting actually was the first step in the study that will shape the plan. If there was a consensus at the meeting, it was that the city needs to speed up its response time to resident concerns,; be more premeditated and less political. But that just may be a problem that is as intractable as the speeding.
PCB BY RYAN EMBREE SMMUSD’s Cover-Up is bigger than the toxics issue. The criminals may sit at the big table, as their Duties include omissions and inaction in the context of what they know.
CONTROVERSY C O N T I N U E S
Oscar De la Torre and Craig Foster exhibit moral purity. Those on SMMUSD Board who remain silent, stoic, and uncooperative obviously are hiding the truth or in denial. Sometimes organizations become perverted into believing that they create their own standards and laws, and succumb to delusion and confusion between reality and concocted “justifications”. The majority of SMMUSD has crossed into that black hole. The State and Federal governments require -- and local parents and teachers will demand and elect -- law-abiding representation to achieve safe environmental learning conditions. No more deer-inthe-headlights, clean-it-up-later approaches to crisis and recovery. The irony that the Superintendent was on a self-promotion jaunt, likely at taxpayer expense, rather than present to answer in official capacity at a regular Board meeting, may be indicative of eyes-out-the-window. If paid leadership prefers to bounce, the SMMUSD Board should prepare now to provide for a better-qualified replacement. Until public servants are held to the same standards as private and corporate industry, PCBs will remain as evidence of this government-sponsored disaster.
Malibu parent and America Unites member Beth Lucas speaks at a recent rally at City Hall. Background on Ryan Embree: Embree became a Malibu resident in 1982 and served the City as a volunteer upon its incorporation in 1991 in the areas of Public Safety, Traffic and Transportation, Emergency Preparedness, and Emergency Communications. For his civic service, councils twice bestowed the City's highest honor -- a Malibu Tile -- on Embree, in 2002 and 2013. Embree is a local technologist specializing in the design of home automation and entertainment.

SHIPWRECKED
BY STEVE WOODS
It wasn’t until after Halloween that a mysterious strange version of a Spanish galleon sailed into Malibu and anchored itself across the street from the Malibu Seafood. An unknown man in a pick-up truck parked on PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) at Corral and unhooked his trailer that harbored a whimsical collection of junk that sort of resembled a Spanish ship from a distance and then he just drove off and abandoned ship. For days and now, well really over a week, old bed sheets nailed on for sails and an American flag have been flapping in the wind from the flimsy mast of pieced together 2x2’s and tied together pieces of different sized string. It is definitely a unique novelty getting a quick glimpse of this maritime replica while driving by at 50 mph but yesterday, when I went by, it had been blown over and off its trailer by the strong overnight Santa Ana Winds. I had to stop and get a closer inspection of the wrecked ship listing onto the beach and found that the ship had no bottom, no bottom at all, so it was not meant to be in water but what was the purpose of this poorly built collection of junk? Was he planning to sell it? It was too rickety and unsafe to be a play structure for kids. As a carpenter I could tell a Shipwright craftsman or anyone pretending to be such did not build it but whoever pieced it together put some time into it. Was it an art piece of found objects? Surely, one of the employees at Malibu Seafood would know the story behind the mystery ship and with the smell of fried fish in the air I moseyed in for a fish taco and a side of questions. But no one knew anything about the ship or the man who left it there and the mystery remains ... mystery on PCH…
LEO CARILLO RESTORATION
BY STEVE WOODS
PUT ON HOLD
One of two restoration projects at Leo Carrillo State Park will be put on hold until the end of the rainy season in 2016. Both the upper and lower concrete Arizona crossings have been removed and native Steelhead seeking their native spawning areas in the creek will no longer encounter any man-made obstructions but the plan to install a bridge expansion over the lower creek has run out of time to pour bridge supports. Bridge supports on the upper creek will proceed but because of dewatering problems and high water tables on the lower creek, the bridge support abutments could not be constructed by the permitted October 31 deadline. Craig Sap was hoping to have the bridge supports done before the deadline date but the project manager Mark Abramson said the construction contractors were delayed by unexpected amounts of water in the footings where the extensive rebar and concrete were to be poured to receive the 100 foot span of bridge over the creek. As a result, Leo Carillo visitors will not be able to drive over the creek and under the PCH underpass to the parking lot called North Beach. The Campground and surfer parking lot will not be affected but those wanting to use North Beach will have to walk in from the Camground or park on PCH and hike down several of the trails.

“TO FORGIVE THE TERRORISTS IS UP TO GOD, BUT TO SEND THEM TO HIM IS UP TO ME.” - Vladimir Putin November 28, 1943, Tehran Conference: Roosevelt and Churchill sit down with former antagonist Stalin and agree to form a “Grand Alliance” to fight Nazi Germany together. Soon after their joint victory over Germany in 1945, the Grand Alliance began to fall apart. But it had served its purpose. Do we need another Grand Alliance with Russia against ISIS? Is this the only way we can overcome these brutal terrorists? “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” - David Stansfield

PEPPERDINE STUDENTS IN PARIS DURING ISIS ATTACKS
BY DAVID STANSFIELD
All the 30 or so Pepperdine students who were in Paris on Friday the 13th of November have been declared to be safe. But as he recounted to Peppedine’s NewsWaves, one of these students, Ryan Opton, had a particularly close call with the attacks on Le Petit Cambodge (Little Cambodia), in which between 12 and 18 people were killed at 9:30p.m. in less than a minute. Here is some of what Ryan had to say about what he was doing at around 9 p.m. on that night: “We walked by the Cafe de Cambodge and we even looked at the menu...we went to the Eiffel Tower and we started to get texts from our parents that things were kinda wierd and that was when we were starting to notice that people were going inside and the city had started to go silent... and we realized that that cafe was one of the one’s that was attacked. So, it was really arbitrary decision, like where are we going to get dinner, and it could have been a huge difference.”
Jean Juillen’s Paris peace symbol has become an iconic symbol of the Paris attacks. Ryan Opton on camera with the Pepperdine NewsWaves team after the Paris attacks.

VOLUME TWO OF A SERIES OF SHORT ILLUSTRATED BOOKS ABOUT TERRORISM
1. MADNESS
BY DAVID STANSFIELD EDITED BY ALLEN WALDMAN
FINANCIAL I’d like to begin, with my deepest thoughts and prayers, for the innocent lives taken in Paris, from the Islamist Terrorists, ISIS. Heading into the tragic Friday event, the Chair head of the FEDS, Janet Yellen, was undoubtedly moving toward raising interest rates at their final 2015 year meeting in December. The increase would be their way to indicate the economy is improving, even with only a .25% increase. During previous meetings, rates were decided to remain the same, due to global instability. We’ll wait to see how stable they believe things are, headed into their late December meeting, while President Obama, the very morning of the attacks, cited ISIS as “contained.”
TERRORISM AND OUR
ECONOMY BY KANDACE MURPHY
The remaining questions to be answered is, how will the third world’s most popular city for tourists, recover? Tourism is a major source of revenue for Paris. Just for starters, after the attacks, the shares in KLMAir France dropped by more than 5%, as did the hotel group, Accor. Airline and tourism within the French and global markets took the largest hit, while other stocks remained basically, resilient. Holger Schmieding at Berenberg bank, quoted, “Experience suggests that such acts of terror do not derail economic trends in mature Western economies.” This seems to hold true, as most markets have rebounded after the slight dip. No matter all of the quotes we may hear, the questions still remain to be seen down the road. This was the largest ISIS claimed hit thus far. Because they are mobile terrorists, I don’t seem to see a parallel from previous terrorist attacks. Will consumer confidence and travel continue to decline? This will be the ongoing question, as we wait to see if Russia, the U.S., and NATO can come up with some type of mutual plan to destroy ISIS, not contain them. If you happened to catch, both the Democratic and Republican debates, each side seems to have different perspectives. The left argues, climate change is our greatest threat to our economy, while the right cites, if America isn’t safe, we essentially have no economy. Common sense might tell us, to address current issues at hand, while always protecting our environment. Continue to follow the candidates on both sides, and try to consider finding the best future president for our immediate times, rather than protecting party lines. Kandace P. COASTAL CURATOR:
DOUG RUCKER
“Doug Rucker who?” If you’re old enough, you may remember Doug was one of Malibu’s local architects and a fixture at the Malibu Building Department doing projects on the beach or in Monte Nido, Encinal, Latigo, Rambla Pacifico, Point Dume, Roberts Ranch, and many other fine sites. He’s the architect who built the pedestal house overlooking the Civic Center that became a remembered Malibu landmark. That home went up in flames in 1970 along with forty-plus homes and the Serra Retreat. Two years later Doug moved his wife, three daughters and Daisy, their dog, into a more fire-resistant house built over the same foundations. Doug is proud of the fact that his newer family home is noted in the Los Angeles Guide to Architecture along with architects, F. L. Wright, Richard Neutra, Frank Gehry, Craig Ellwood, etc., Calling it his “one claim to fame”, he imagines locals reading this and thinking, “Oh yeah! What happened to that guy?” Five years ago at 82 Doug gradually finished his 50-year architectural profession. By that time he’d completed a hundred-and-forty projects mostly in Malibu, but also in Kauai, Greece, Denver, Maryland, Barstow, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Brentwood Village, Palos Verdes, and Long Beach. These are emotional remembrances for Doug whose heart and passion are an integral part of his creative endeavors. When it came time to do something else, he’d always had a longing to write and be an artist. He’d already self-published ten books including 3 autobiographical and one manuscript about building his first house, the fire, and building the second, called Trial by Fire. One of his ten self-published comedy books, one called Crandalicus will be available through Amazon before the end of the year. While writing, Doug also began taking pictures of cities and malls between San Luis Obisbo and Malibu. He’d stand outside stores and shoot objects through plate glass windows. Reflections were always getting in the way until he realized they were intriguing and perfect for being included in the artwork. Using eight cities as subjects he made eight books, each eighty pages in length, and began entering shows. His work was well-received and he subsequently self-published two books, Reflections and Off the Wall, the last of Photo Shop variations to graffiti found in Malibu’s La Jolla tunnel. Over the past 5 years Doug has shown eighty times in local galleries and won twelve awards. Of his four, one-man shows the last appeared at Malibu’s Calamigos Ranch. Right now and through October he has thirteen works at the New Moon Wellness Center in Agoura Hills, 30315 Canwood Street, Agoura Hills, CA 91301 10 AM to 6:00 PM Mon/Sat) Last year, as a member of the Malibu Art Association, he presented three artworks at Bergamot Station and he and his wife, Marge, also participated in the Malibu Art Associations outdoor Art Fair at the Civic Center sponsored by the Malibu Chamber of Commerce. In the past four years Doug has been photographing objects directly, and objects with reflections. Now he’s into abstract work often using remains of broken headlights, shattered stoplights, parts of children’s toys, destroyed wire, cracked mirrors, old sun-glasses and anything he sees that has a good line, shape, or color suitable for something beautiful. If you haven’t seen Doug’s art, you may have seen him jogging or walking along the road shoulder as part of the tapestry of Malibu for the better part of a century. After running or walking in Malibu at least 5 days a week for 43 years, you can point to most any peak in Malibu and he’s been to the top. He says he sees beauty everywhere and knows you see it too - but highway debris? Where did that guy go? He’s up Kanan Dume Road with his wife, Marge, writing and making art. If you see him on the highway, wave! Editor’s Note: I was blessed to know Doug Rucker and his family in the 70’s while living in a guest room of the rebuilt Pedestal House after the fire that burnt the original house. With my one bedroom window looking out at the Iconic structures of Serra Retreat and the Castle House overlooking Malibu Creek, my most frequently used window was the one that looked directly down on 3rd point Malibu at Surfrider Point. And, yes, those winter floods did uproot mature sycamore trees that almost took out the PCH bridge but ‘oh my,’was the surf ever better? It seemed like weeks that the highway was closed down to outsiders due to mudslides and never was there a crowd during those El Nino swells that produced some of the most consistent quality surf of my life! Those were the days when some musical band named the Red Hot Chilli Peppers played Friday nights at the Baja Cantina (now called Traverna Tony’s ) and afterwards I would huff and puff up the starlit trail behind the library to anybody’s dream house. Fond, fond memories, thank you Doug. Steve Woods

SNOW SEASON 2015
VETS FLY HIGH BY STEVE WOODS

Mammoth Mountain had much to celebrate and honor at its Veterans Day ‘Official Opening Day’ on November 11th, 2015. GoPro and Mammoth Mountain decided to introduce the Stars and Stripes to the mountains fresh snow with a stunning aerial show on a beautiful blue bird morning. With eager smiling skiers and snowboarders lined up at the bottom of the chairlifts, all eyes gazed up to the circling skydive plane when Navy S.E.A.L. Trevor Thompson jumped out and unfurled a giant American flag followed by GoPro Bomb Squad members Jesse Hall, Marshall Miller, and Neil Amonson to celebrate our country’s servicemen and women. With colorful smoke flares and the flag flapping in the cold high Sierra air and speakers blasting the Star Spangled Banner, the parachuters circled down to Woolly, Mammoths famous mascot, who was waiting with high fives on the freshly groomed slope next to Chair One. Back in 1918, on a chilly November 11th, an armistice agreement was signed at 11 am, which marked the end of fighting in World War I. During the 11th hour of the 11th month on the 11th day, the fighting sides agreed to set down their arms. Some 20 years later, Congress signed a bill that formalized Armistice Day now known as Veterans Day. November 11th still stands as the day to celebrate those who have served for our country and all Veterans at Mammoth Mountain were treated to a free day skiing and snowboarding. Mammoth was fortunate enough to receive plenty of early season snow to open on November 5th this year, six days before the official opening day. Long time Locals were calling this early season the best start to the season many could ever recall. With several ‘snow dumping’ storms in the books, forecasters are still predicting that the Pacific storm patterns will bring in consistent low-pressure cycles laden with warmer pacific moisture compliments of El Nino. Meteorologist are noticing that this years low fronts are not being blocked by the persistent high pressure ridges that has caused storm systems to miss California during the last several years. El Niños are known for heavy snow years, heavy rain years and heavy surf but they can also be heavy damage years on coastal structures and canyon roads. Stocks up on food supplies and prepare for PCH to close near Point Mugu and plan on Malibu Canyon as well as other roads to be periodically out of service. During the El Niños in the 80’s Malibuites were cut off at times from leaving or entering Malibu as all canyon roads were blocked by mudslides as well as PCH, North and South. For local Surfers it was a dream that is fondly remembered.

BOOK REVIEW
BY LINDA ATKINSON, MA
FOOD SEX WINE AND CIGARS Food Sex Wine and Cigars (By Lisa Stalvey) … with a title like that what’s not to love? Don’t be lured into thinking this is a book of indulgences and hedonistic pursuits. World renowned chef and founder of Malibu Catering and The Malibu Chef Lisa Stalvey’s book is part memoir, part cookbook with a whole lot of authenticity and honesty mixed in. In a time of male-dominated kitchens Lisa forged the way for females in the industry creating success at L’Orangerie, Wolfgang Puck and Spago. This is a memoir about one women’s journey from anorexia, abortion, an accident that severed three of her fingers, and a near death experience to recovery and healing. Stalvey writes fast and we try to keep up, her sense of humour makes us laugh out loud and her ability to rawly state, with great courage, her feelings and inner landscape keeps us hooked. This is not a book that flows in a straight forward format and somehow this seems to fit perfectly with Stalvey’s personality and gives us a sense of her and how she lived. Her love of food is evident as we turn the pages and salivate to a few of the included recipes in the body of the memoir (page 113 - White Chocolate Raspberry Buttermilk Pancakes!) and we get a sense that we are inside her mind as she creates the next tantalizing menu. Would it be strange to love food this much and have an eating disorder? Stalvey tackles this subject in realtime and we journey with her as she struggles to make sense of it all, spoiler alert - it’s not about the food. Pivotal life moments such as an abortion followed by an accident with a French pasta maker, causing Stalvey to lose three of the fingers on her right hand, lead to the beginning of a spiritual journey taking over 30 years to culminate. You will turn the pages quickly stopping to write down a recipe or two and you will feel that someone, a stranger, has shared with you their life, their challenges, their honesty, their soul and there is great respect in that… you will be left feeling inspired, disturbed, elated, moved but also that you have a new friend in Stalvey one that just happens to cook really, really well! Voted one of the top 100 Chefs in America in 1996/97 Stalvey’s culinary excellence is evident...how she got there? ... well you will just have to read her book! ECO FRIENDLY BRANDS THAT ARE MAKING FASHION A MOVEMENT
Here is a startling statistic: believe it or not, fashion is the third most polluting industry in the world. Every year, around 80 billion garments are produced worldwide and leave a massive environmental footprint. Global production of all textile fibers consumes 1 trillion gallons of water, 33 gallons of oil and 20 billion gallons of chemicals annually. Fashion is also the second largest consumer and polluter of water. Processing raw materials and manufacturing clothing uses an extreme amount of water. Producing one pair of denim jeans uses over 900 gallons of water. This amounts to over 400 billion gallons of water used every year just to make the jeans sold in the United States. This often-polluted water is sent back to our rivers, lakes and oceans. The World Bank estimates that almost 20% of global industrial water pollution comes from the treatment and dyeing of textiles. Did you also know that Americans throw away over 14 million tons of textiles a year? That makes for a lot of waste. Over 99% of the clothing thrown away can be recycled or reused, but sadly over 85% ends up in landfills. Even in a landfill, these materials don’t just go away. Nylon takes about 30-40 years to biodegrade, while polyester takes more than 200 years. The movement to create sustainable fashion is quickly gaining momentum. For modern fashion brands, being eco-friendly is no longer a choice. Fashion companies are finally making changes in order to shrink their environmental footprint and also leading a movement towards a world where sustainable manufacturing is the status quo. “Today, 45 years after the U.S. first celebrated Earth Day, fear of ‘greenwashing’ (a superficial display of concern for the environment that is shown by an organization) has subsided, and brands - including H&M, Kering and Nike - are happy to share the work they’re doing, releasing “sustainability reports” that detail their progress. That’s partly because shoppers have begun to demand more transparency.” (fashionista. com) RE/DONE is a company whose success is based purely on recycling and reconstructing vintage Levis. Founded by Los Angeles- based fashion entrepreneurs Sean Barron and Jamie Mazur. They source the best of highly coveted vintage Levis, deconstruct them and re-sew them into immaculate, modern fits. They are the ultimate in repurposed jeans and are sold at Barney’s New York. LOOMSTATE pioneered sustainable design in fine casual goods made from 100% organic cotton. The company has created new organic cotton tees that are grown- to sewn in North Carolina (so it will be known what happens at every level of production- the excess cotton seed will even go to feed cows). REFORMATION is an eco-friendly, cult fashion brand that designs and manufactures limited-edition collections in their own sustainable sewing factories in Downtown Los Angeles. They source sustainable fabrics, use 100% recycled packaging to ship out all their orders and only use recycled hangers in all their stores. Sustainability is core to their business at every level. They produce seasonless collections with a fast-fashion approach (the site restocks buy-now, wear-now merchandise weekly). The brand’s philosophy is pure genius.

FROM MALIBU TO MAUI HOW BEING IN PARADISE MADE ME REAFFIRM MY GRATITUDE FOR EVERYDAY LIVING. BT TED MC DONALD Click clack, click clack. There was a beautiful silence of nature. Then we’d hear the clacking of the endless bamboo trees. Recently, my wife and I traveled to Maui for a vacation. One day we drove along the Hana Highway and hiked the Pipiwai trail which leads through the magical bamboo forest to Waimoku Falls of Haleakala National Park. The tall bamboo trees clacking in the wind is reminiscent of a children’s fairy tale. There is a purity and a beauty in this magical place that had me reflecting about my own life, my own home, and of course, my own mind. It’s a great opportunity to be in such a special place, but what about my own special place? What about my own home? It’s pretty fairytale-esque as well. My wife and I live in Malibu, California. Malibu is 27 miles of exquisite coastline. It has amazing beaches cushioned by incredible hikes in the Santa Monica Mountain Range. 570 miles of trails to be exact. We drive a lot because our town is long and thin. So, we can get frustrated about the fact that we have to drive or we can be grateful about the fact that we get to drive along one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world! Really, the choice is ours. Our perception of reality is completely up to us. Walking along the beautiful black sand beaches in Maui, hiking the bamboo forest, and taking in Mother Nature’s incredible beauty got me thinking. All we need to do is be present for a moment. Be present, take a breath and feel the awesomeness of life. Feel the fact that we’re alive. We don’t have to trudge through life, we can skip, sail, and enjoy this amazing opportunity called living. The choice is ours. We all have hard times, people get sick, people leave us and every so often, they even die. It’s sad, but there is so much good and so much to take in it’s really amazing. It is the the time of year for gratitude and that’s where it all starts. Look around you. Or better yet, look inside. You don’t need Malibu and you sure don’t need Maui. Simply feel for a moment. Feel the breath, feel your body, stretch your fingers and toes. YOU’RE ALIVE! Why we continually focus of what we don’t have, or problems that may or may not happen, or the other guy, baffles me! Forget it! Stand up, take a deep breath and scream!!! Because before you know it, you won’t be able to do it. If, at the end, you’re able to look back on your life, will you be happy? Will you be grateful to have lived or will you regret that you didn’t? The choice is yours! It’s easy to forget about how lucky we are. It’s easy to forget that by being alive we already beat the odds. It’s easy to sink into our own routine and forget that our destiny is not to be a tree or a dumpster for that matter, but it’s to be a human being. My challenge to you is to evolve from a human being to a human living, thriving and giving in an amazing world. See you on the path! @teddymcdonald

OVERINDULGING? Let’s face it Holidays can chip away at your healthy lifestyle. It’s not only important to pay attention to what we eat but also how much we eat! Even the most hardcore, healthiest of us have a tendency to overeat during the holidays! Just because we’re choosing to eat organic does not mean we can eat twice as much! Be cautious during the Holidays. A little discipline can go a long way. Come January, if you haven’t gained weight, you’ll be thankful.
HOLIDAY FOOD FOR THOUGHT 5 HIDDEN CULPRITS BY DIANA NICHOLSON
5 Hidden Culprits 1) Holiday Parties - Cheese platters, dip, chips, etc. If you can minimize your time at the desert table, you’ll better manage your fat, calorie and sugar intake. One pass at the buffet is sufficient, think small portions. 2) Alcohol - Weight comes on fast if you’re drinking your calories. Be smart about what and how much you choose to drink. Stick with clear liquid drinks, they’re usually lower in calories than the creamy or dark colored stuff. And, drink plenty of water!!! 3) Cooking - Just because a recipe calls for large amounts of artery clogging fat in the dish, doesn’t mean you can’t update the ingredients for the 21st century. Use herbs, spices, garlic and lemon juice, they’re calorie free. Use real unprocessed ingredients, avoid refined flours and white sugar. For the desert menu, there are several healthier recipes that use almond flour, coconut oil & dark chocolate chips instead of traditional fattening ingredients. 4) Stress - The holidays are a time of good cheer but they can also be stressful for many people, and have an impact on how well or how much you’re eating. Sometimes the stress will lead you to the tempting, sugary, starchy, and fat laden treats. Be aware if you’re mindlessly nibbling... especially while you’re out gift shopping (this one’s a real culprit).

5) Don’t skip workouts! - The holidays can wreak havoc on even the most dedicated fitness routines. The “season” is always challenging, overbooked with parties, shopping excursions, activities and visits with family and friends, all while we’re consuming more and working out less. We can avoid the holiday weight creep by staying true to our fitness routines. There is no substitute for burning those excess seasonal calories, stay active! So, step away from the table! And, if you can’t help yourself, make good choices, cook and prepare your meals thoughtfully, all while you’re in the holiday spirit. You’ll feel great if you arrive the first of 2016 without having to deal with to much damage control. Thanksgiving... Take a few moments to focus on all that you have. An “attitude of gratitude” is one of the simplest ways to improve your health and satisfaction with life. PEPPERDINE STUDENTS
WALKING ON WATER
STORY AND PHOTOS BY TIM HORTON
“Surf Convo (Surf Convocation) is for those who love God, love each other, and love to surf -hopefully in that order.” Said Dr. Robert Shearer, business professor at Pepperdine. He started taking a small group of students out early in the morning for surfing and a Bible study in 2013. The numbers grew and soon 50 Pepperdine students were basking in this activity of songs, prayer and waves. Today well over 100 students meet at 7:00 am every Wednesday at Zuma Beach, for fellowship, singing, a short Bible study and then a small group time that encourages community and a time for students to connect on a deeper level. They then can use surfboards and wet suits provided by Pepperdine or their own equipment and hit the waves! During one short Bible study led by Dr. Shearer, he read from the Gospel of Matthew when this guy named Peter got out of a boat during a storm and walked on water with Jesus. He was fine as long as he fixed his eyes on Jesus. But when he started looking around at the rough waves he sank into them needing to be rescued. Dr. Shearer encouraged the students to GET OFF THE BOAT...To get out of their comfort zone. To get out of their bubble and get involved in ministries that deal with the poor and oppressed... to sit down and talk with that homeless person, or that lonely student sitting by himself in the dining hall. A message we all need to hear from time-to-time. Get off the boat. Facebook - Walking on Water: Surf Convocation and Instagram @surfconvo
