Somersault LFS ANNUAL REVIEW - DECEMBER 2013
CLEANING UP In 2013 we’ve been regrouping, negotiating new partnerships, launching new teaching , raising money -and excelling at our most important job, filmmaking.
Ben Gibson
Welcome to Somersault, our celebration of a year’s work at LFS – the films, talent and feature projects that are the output of intense activity at the school and beyond.
There were challenges. LFS joined forces with other conservatoires to lobby against suspension of US Federal Student Loans (now resolved), and rapid changes to the UK student visa system have been damaging to international recruitment for postgraduate education. However, creatively and strategically this school year has been a triumphant success. One way of measuring impact is to read through the festival calendar.
A MESSAGE FROM MIKE LEIGH many from the UK. Every filmmaker will see in graduation day their first step along an individual path towards a working life in film. They’ll also see, from the successes of 2012’s LFS Associates, what they can achieve. They will have digested skills, made friendships, drawn conclusions, discovered and understood instincts that they could only begin to imagine on arrival.
2013 graduation film ROSEMARY JANE, directed by Carolina Petro, was selected for Palm Springs and Encounters, where it won the Best of British Award.
In the past year, LFS films had 232 festival entries across 179 events, winning 43 prizes, nominations or special mentions. The tally breaks our own records for global visibility and graduate success. And if we look more deeply into what this excellent year can tell us about the qualities of the school and the
talent it’s developing? Many will imagine small events in far-flung places, focused entirely on student work. In fact only 8 are student showcases, leaving 121 specialist short film events for all comers, shorts competitions and sidebars in bigger festivals. The list covers Toronto, Venice, Tribeca, San Sebastian, Clermont Ferrand, The London Film Festival, San Francisco, the BAFTAs and the Student Academy Awards.
‘LFS films have had 232 festival entries across 179 events, earning 43 prizes’ LFS performs well at film school festivals too. Last month we had 6 films playing at ÁČKO 2013 in Bratislava and 3 films at the Munich Student Film Festival. But the dominating picture here is not of a world divided between 2013 graduation film REWIND, directed by Cristina Wolf and shot by Rafael Medina Adalfio, was selected for Camerimage.
Welcome to another celebration of emerging filmmakers from LFS. These films are testaments to an institution built on hard work, creative inspiration and internationalism. In a school producing over 170 films a year, graduation day tells part of our story. LFS is run as a busy studio in the heart of London, energetically nurturing craft, collaboration, selfdiscovery and, we hope you’ll agree, delivering originality too. There are films here from China, India, Iran, Iraq, Mexico, the USA, Denmark, Portugal, Greece, Germany Ireland, Italy as well as
On your behalf I want to thank: the filmmakers for their energy, their craft and their belief in cinema; the tireless teachers and administrators of LFS for the uncompromising commitment which makes the school what it is; those who have given – volunteers, performers, industry sponsors, parents, friends – so that this work can exist and the talent can shine through. Come and help us make the next chapter a success as we head for our 60th anniversary and the new LFS in 2016. Bring a spirit of discovery, an open mind – and where possible a cheque book. Mike Leigh, LFS Chairman and 1964 graduate.

‘professional’ films and ‘film school’ films; for the festivals and for us there are only distinctive films and ordinary, unexeptional films, at all levels and all prices. Films that performed most strongly in 2013 include Muriel d’Ansembourg’s GOOD NIGHT, (nominated for a BAFTA), Sonia Kenterman’s NICOLETTA, Jeroen Bogaert’s EARLY BIRDS and Eli Kasavi’s COMING OF AGE. These films and others had selectors and their audiences marvelling that a film school logo could lead them into such confident and mature treatments of complex themes. Grown-up films. Do these big numbers reflect
multiple successes from just a few specially attractive films? No. The quantity of strong and engaging work being made across the school is striking. At some recent UK film festivals: LFS took away 5 awards at Screen Test in March, screened 5 at Encounters in Bristol in September (winning the Best of British award for Rosemary Jane) -- and had 8 films playing at Aesthetica in York in November. Classmates are taking on the screening circuit together. engagement with creativity across the important jobs in film and television and beyond the production phase. Next year will be a special one. We’ve achieved a first major investment in our new home at the Barbican -- and we now need £7.5M more in order to arrive there safely in 2016. We’re making new academic partnerships that will allow LFS to offer more teaching, better access for the best students and new services for the whole industry at the Barbican building. We’ve proven again that the world’s only international graduate
school of film and television is more than just a smart idea; it’s a tested and successful one that has a special fit in London and the UK. We’ve helped the UK film and television industries understand just how vital LFS is to the British film talent base and culture. We’re building a new dialogue with industry and public sector partners, based on an agreement which ensures collaboration and complementarity with our sister organisation, The National Film School.

Tell us how you can help – through teaching, learning, advising, partnering, giving – to get us to the next level up, a place where we can concentrate, even more freely, on the things we understand best and care about most passionately: talent that will develop and grow wings, films that matter and that entertain, careers that will endure and reward.
2013-14 will be a ferocious year of campaigning. We ask the school’s friends, supporters and Associates

Development The London Film School is set to embark on the most significant development in its 57 year history: moving from its current home in Covent Garden into the Barbican Arts Centre. LFS is building a new kind of film school in the heart of the capital – a graduate conservatoire with state-of-the-art facilities, professional training workshops, public and film industry events, regular screenings, collaborative and cross-platform work and outreach programmes providing improved access to filmmaking for secondary school students and their teachers.
creative learning centre, the City’s arts and cultural quarter. The School will work in collaboration with the Barbican’s cinemas, galleries, theatres and library and with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to develop, celebrate and disseminate British and international culture, facilitate cross-platform initiatives and promote education, opportunity and accessibility in the arts.
The LFS and the Barbican are natural partners and the specially converted school will be a central element in the Barbican’s new
The arrival of the LFS at the Barbican will be a seminal moment for film and the arts in the UK, presenting an opportunity to
bring film conservatoires into line with the support available for corresponding institutions in drama, dance and the fine arts. We thank the BFI for their support of our project and we’re very grateful to Sir Nicholas Kenyon and his team at the Barbican. LFS Workshops SUMMER IN THE CITY Directing and Documentary Summer Schools at LFS After only two years, Udayan Prasad’s Directing Summer School at LFS is already a sought-after classic. Over three weeks in August, twelve filmmakers from all over the world are put through their paces by director Udayan and a team of industry experts, including Nina Kellgren BSC and editor Barrie Vince
Through a systematic and rigorous process of scrutiny, the complexities inherent in a simple scenario are explored. Participants attend practical acting workshops and specialist masterclasses, before writing and shooting their own short films with professional actors, DoPs and editors. "It was a fantastic experience!” says Idil. “My only disappointment was that it
ended; I was having such a great time. It was wonderful to work with such significant professionals from the field. Udayan is an amazing tutor: he manages to give you truthful feedback without ever harming your enthusiasm and only pushing you to discover the best within you. I believe these 3 weeks have given me the knowledge and confidence to start working on a film of my own."
Mukesh has been travelling back and forth between India and London since 2009 to attend workshops at LFS. When the summer school was announced, he had to apply. "The three week summer school with Udayan Prasad is absolutely the best thing an aspiring director can do...Udayan inspires you, gives you the tools, the philosophy, the path... and his teaching
is sheer fun too!” The Directing Summer School is aimed at anyone who is serious about a career in film, in particular those about to apply to a major film school. At the end of the course, each participant receives a DVD of their filmMuriel d'Ansembourgs which may be used for showreel purposes, or as part of an application portfolio. In July – August 2014 we launch a new Documentary Summer School. In two weeks, BAFTA-winning director Jonas Grimås will guide twelve filmmakers to create their own unique view of the world. Through multiple hands-on filmmaking exercises, each participant will develop their idea, and create their own vision of life in London’s West End. Jonas, who has directed award-winning dramas including Silent Witness and Wallander, is a master of the personal view. His expanding series of films My
Un-Eventful Life is a first-person account of the world and its events. Jonas’s recent art documentaries include The Big Country, an expanding series on how Stephen Chambers creates the biggest handmade art screen print ever made; and Ed Hall’s Pocket Propeller Theatre production of Henry V. ‘Documentary Summer School: Filming the Real World’ will explore many different approaches to reality filmmaking, ranging from observational documentary, through the essay film to issue-based campaigning films, with master-classes by renowned practitioners. Along with our year-round programme of short professional development workshops, we are also constantly developing new strands so, please keep an eye on the lfs.org.uk website for news.
FILMMAKING FOR TV 2013 has been a year of enormous change for UK TV Drama. Since the New Wave of international TV series drama broke with HBO’s The Sopranos (1999) American and European series dramas have shown extraordinary inventiveness and achieved worldwide accessibility. From the US, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Nip/Tuck, Deadwood, True Blood, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Justified, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. From Scandinavia, Wallander, The Killing, Borgen and The Bridge. From France, Spiral, Braquo and The Returned. The UK was traditionally world-leader in the field. There are many UK success stories – Dr Who, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, Titanic, Mr Selfridge, Peaky Blinders and Ripper Street; and foreign remakes including Life on Mars, Shameless, Skins and Being Human. Still, we need more drama series that are both popular and sophisticated. Now high-end TV drama (£1m plus per hour) is to be eligible for production tax credits in the UK, ushering in a new boom in sophisticated drama series, for UK and international production companies. If UK companies and talent are to benefit fully, our writers, producers and directors will need high-end creative support. This year LFS has launched important new strands of training and networking for writers, producers and directors of TV drama: a set of professional development programmes including ‘Showrunner’, and ‘Serial Eyes’, the first European programme to train experienced

“All these programmes focus on creativity, situated in the context of production for UK and international audiences. A host of UK and international writers, producers, directors and television executives will enhance and develop the skills of UK talent," says Archie Tait, Head of LFS Workshops. “Creative training is vital if UK production is to continue to be a world leader. The ultimate beneficiaries will be the viewers, here and abroad.”
Craft Workshops for TV Drama
LFS Workshops is proud to be the home for Barrie Vince’s ‘The Editor as Storyteller: Principles and Practice of Narrative Editing’ and David McHenry’s ‘Six Principles of Production Design’. Barrie edited Hillsborough, one of the most powerful TV films ever made. His lessons in storytelling for editors are practical and profound. David McHenry is one of the UKs most experienced draughtsmen, art directors and production designers, from Inspector Morse and Kavanagh QC, most recently to Game of Thrones IV and Black Sails, the Starz pirate epic, executive-produced by Michael Bay. Both Barrie’s editing workshop and David’s design workshop are in January.
writers for the Writers’ Room. The strands bring together an extraordinary group of TV professionals from the UK and around the world. The LFS Workshops TV programmes span all forms and levels of professional TV drama writing. This autumn Neil Arksey led ‘Continuing & Serial TV Drama: How It Works and How to Write It’. “Continuing TV Drama Serials – Coronation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks – attract the most massive and loyal TV drama audiences,” says Neil, the vastly experienced Head Writer and producer, whose credits include Family Affairs, Crossroads, Mile High and River City, as well as continuing serials in Finland and Hungary. “And original closed-end TV Drama serials like The Fall and Broadchurch are the jewels in each season’s drama schedule.” Neil’s ten-week evening course introduces experienced writers, new to television, to storylining, script editing, team story development, and also to the demands of creating and developing their own original closed-end serials. Philip Palmer, writer for The Bill, Heartbeat and Rebus, script and story executive for Taggart, among many others, and author of several SFF novels, led ‘Going Again: Creating and Developing Returnable TV Drama Series’. Eight practised TV drama writers developed their own original series formats through analysis and discussion of successful formats, with Masterclass presentations and conversations with creators of longrunning drama series Lucy Gannon, Ashley Pharoah and Stephen Gallagher. ‘Going Again’ is an exhilarating experience – informative, reflective, and highly practical, with advice from some UK TV’s most successful drama creators. After her Masterclass, Lucy Gannon tweeted “Ystdy I met 5young(er) writers with exciting ORIGINAL ideas for TV plus energy & skill. Gr8 to meet the next lot coming through. God speed’. ‘Showrunner’, supported by the Creative Skillset TV Skills Fund, is an intensive two-week programme in the business of TV commissioning and producing in the international market place, for eight experienced drama writers and producers, with at least two network credits. The course leader was Sue Austen, BAFTAnominated producer of Donovan Quick and The Key. Contributors this year included broadcast executives Ben Stephenson, Lucy Richer, and David Bergg; writers Chris Chibnall, Adrian Hodges and Frank Spotnitz; producers Gub Neal, Rob Pursey, Lachlan MacKinnon, and Nigel
FAST FORWARD 2014 In April 2014 LFS will run a new edition of Fast Forward Producing, an intensive three week course for ten new producers, developed and distilled from the programme that ran last year (see page 19). Aspiring producers come from many areas of the film business and beyond from exhibition, distribution, legal, financial and accountancy, as well as from filmmaking. Some come from a career in television, from documentaries, from advertising, gaming and corporates. Each will have a privileged insight into one or more aspects of the kaleidoscope of skills and knowledge vital to producing a feature film. But none will have had access to all stages of producing, from the initial idea through to revenue collection. And beyond that first feature, none will have the road map to their second and subsequent feature. Fast Forward Producing 2014 is the course that pulls all the necessary information and insights together. The course leader of is Emma Hayter, a highly experienced producer, financier and trainer. Emma expects to add to the FFP pool of contributors producer Nick Brown (Neal Street Films), financier Bill Allen, lawyer Carlo Dusi, editor Sean Barton, and directors Aisling Walsh and Danny Hiller. Also scheduled to contribute are award winning writer, producer and director (and former LFS student) Ludi Boeken; and Linda Bruce, Line Producer. FFP2014 is not specifically aimed at film school graduates. It is aimed at those already working in the industry, who need new skills to step up. Designed to appeal to participants from all sectors of the industry, it will also be more accessible to freelancers who were unable to commit to the longer form of the course. Fast Forward Producing 2014 will run from March 31st to April 18th.
Stafford-Clark; casting director Dan Hubbard; media legal and financial expert Keith Northrop; production designer Candida Otton; and script editor and development executive Kirstie MacDonald. Says ‘Showrunner’ participant Michael Maynard, “It's not often you get to meet such star named speakers. Also to meet them in such a small group was special. It was fantastic to meet up with other writers who I'll keep in touch with and maybe one day collaborate with”. The LFS Workshops TV programme has launched two new courses for drama directors, and provides a new context for another. In ‘Director’s Prep: Everything You Need to Know Before You Shout ‘Action!’ , Jonas Grimås, the BAFTAwinning director of Second Sight, Silent Witness, and in Sweden, Wallander, The Commission and The Ice Princess lays out the process of a director’s preparation. It is a com-
prehensive journey, from the moment of the audition meeting with the producer to the read-through. It includes casting etiquette, dealing with broadcast executives and working with heads of department, whether you have selected them or not. This is the crash-course and the road-map for any prospective director of TV drama. Tim Fywell is one of the UK’s most talented, successful and experienced drama directors. His work includes the classic Cracker: To be a Somebody with Robert Carlyle, Wodehouse in Exile, Lewis, and most recently Showtime’s Masters of Sex, with Michael Sheen. Tim’s ‘From Script to Screen’ workshop explores the creative relationship between director and writer, revealing how it can work to the greater benefit of any film. Udayan Prasad’s ‘Directing Actors: Getting the Right Performance’ is already among the most respected workshops for directors. In the context of director training for TV drama, it
‘We are in a new golden age of television series drama, with huge opportunities for UK creators to capture international markets. The London Film School has always been at the cutting edge of originality and creativity in film. The time is right to extend this ethos into training new writers, producers and directors of TV drama.’ Stephen Garrett Chairman of Kudos Film & Television, producer of Life on Mars, Hunted, The Hour, Broadchurch and The Tunnel, and a member of LFS’s development committee.

MEDIA/International Projects In 2013 LFS continued to be the most active school in Europe with post-graduation teaching partnerships, including continuing editions of The Low Budget Film Forum and Making Waves and the launch of Serial Eyes, a nine-month teaching programme for TV writers in Berlin and London. There are 14 MEDIA programmes running across Europe and LFS is partner in 5 of them, making it the most active school in Europe for such collaborative teaching projects. After 2014 the MEDIA programme will pass responsibility for ‘initial training’ collaborations to the ERASMUS university cooperation funding strand, working under a new title CREATIVE EUROPE. This will offer a chance to reassess, re-budget and selectively re-launch some of these LFS partner schemes, and some new ones as well. In addition to its own projects, LFS is a ‘consortium partner’ in EU MEDIA training programmes led by other European Film Schools including: Adapting For
Cinema (based in Italy at the Scuola Holden in Turin, with MOME in Budapest as the third partner school), Serial Eyes (dffb, Berlin, Germany) and A Clear View, a technical training in grading for 5th term students (dffb Germany). In all these cases LFS gains the opportunity to recruit recent graduates into specialist workshops with important and career-defining networking opportunities for our students. In addition, LFS partners with The European Film School Network, which allows LFS to help set the agenda for an annual overview of film training hosted by Le Femis in Paris. Making Waves now in its third year, recruits participants from the UK and six European schools, plus US graduates via a partnership with Columbia University NY. This hands-on workshop is for graduating students to gain understanding in emerging strategies in independent film distribution, and is especially aimed at those planning careers in production, distribution and sales. The one-week workshop is held parallel to the Berlinale. Thirty participants from the six training institutions are immersed in all areas of the festival. Working collaboratively in multinational teams, they develop creative campaigns for five real case study films selected from the Berlinale, edit trailers, design posters and plan roll-out packages. They are joined by industry professionals from across the independent distribution sector, who offer project support and in-depth case studies and highlight the challenges in the field, with the current shifting models of day on date releasing, VOD and new ideas around theatrical releasing of independent films across Europe.
The 2013 edition of Making Waves included case studies of THE SPIRIT OF ’45, THE STRANGE LITTLE CAT, LOVE BUILDING and DREAMS OF A LIFE.

LOW BUDGET FILM FORUM Vll 13-18 Dec 2014 Les Arcs France. Coordinator: LFS Partners: La fémis, Paris, The National Film School of Denmark, Budapest Academy of Drama and Film, dffb, Berlin and UNATC, Bucharest.
‘5th term film TRIVIA’ was one of the projects to benefit from LFS participation in the MEDIA-FUNDED initiative ‘A Clear View’, which focused on technical training in grading.initiative
Running annually since 2008, The Low Budget Film Forum has delivered training to 150 students. Next year it takes place at Les Arcs and will be its 7th and final edition in its current form. LBFF aims to provide participants with the tools and best practice to develop and deliver successful, strategic approaches to marketable low budget filmmaking in Europe. Leading directors and producers join European film students & graduates for case studies and workshops on low budget films. Chi Yu , 2013 MA filmmaking graduate, reflects on his experience. The LBFF provided me with a valuable introduction into turning my 1st feature into a reality. For that week I was able to focus on developing my ideas in writing (guided by the ever-enthusiastic and unorthodox creative techniques of Ellis Freeman), directing (the energetic Ibolya Fekete) and producing (from the insightful Luke Schiller). By engaging in a relaxed and encouraging dialogue with the trainers, nothing was ever discussed as theory, it was all about actuality and feasibility and story was always at the forefront of the discussions. Now armed with this knowledge I feel all the more confident not just in articulating my ideas in front of people but also in the choices I make outside the nest of film school. The experience also gave me the opportunity to meet like-minded filmmakers from all across Europe, giving me an insight in the kind of stories being told by my peers. The LBFF was also run alongside the Transylvanian Film Festival in Cluj, Romania, so in addition, I had the opportunity to experience an incredibly diverse and well-programmed festival and also having a culturally nourishing experience as well.
Participants on Low Budget Film Forum
“Low Budget Film Forum is probably one of the best professional experiences in my life. Not only was it a great chance of testing the field of what really bringing a project from the ground up looks like, and doing so in a safe and encouraging environment; it was also a tremendous source of positivity and encouragement, and a chance for networking and exchange of ideas from a place of nurture.” Antonio Duran: LFS MA Filmmaking Student, 2013 participant
“The mentors were open and eager to understand the story I wanted to tell and where able to exercise a combination of firm, concrete advice and a fluid, adaptable approach necessary for a project in such an early stage of development. I came away with the bones of an actual story and had really done months of work in the few days we were there.” Daina O Pusic 2012 LFS MA filmmaking grad, 2013 LBFF participant

The unique feature of MA Filmmaking at LFS is that everyone learns everything from loading a magazine to synching rushes, from researching for documentary to building sets for studio drama, from 1st assistant camera and director to editing and producing. The course is as multi-disciplinary as it is international. With three intakes per year in September, January and April, the student body is constantly renewing itself and this combined with visiting lecturers working at the cutting edge of cinema craft and production makes the old Covent Garden warehouse a vibrant, challenging and rewarding place to teach and learn.

Each term students collaborate in the development, production and delivery of around 60 films - 3’ B&W 16mm silents, post-synch16mm colour ‘Transcriptions’ of paintings in the National Gallery collection, 15-20’ digital documentaries and studio dramas shot on 35mm cameras or Arri Alexas. In addition to these ‘exercises’ 57 grad films were screened in the course of the past year – a record. The majority of these are true LFS collaborations, with a Mexican cinematographer venturing to the foothills of the Himalayas, a Frenchman and a Turkish-American to Mexico, a Peruvian-German to Italy, plus American and British cinematographers to India for two of the six films shot in the subcontinent. This annual show also pays tribute to ongoing collaborations with LFS associates around the world. The school like its students is both proudly cosmopolitan and distinctly London. Twenty of the 2013 films take place within the M25, with an unmodernised flat and an abandoned NHS facility transformed through inventive, detailed production design into other places and another time. The remainder represents a marvelous range of London stories – from the deeply personal to the genre-driven, with several bittersweet love stories and complex rites of passage in between. There are other journeys across borders into new landscapes – geographical, cultural and spiritual – including three creative documentaries exploring identity. Another documentary of this year is an LFS co-production with a Chinese charity providing support for ethnic migrants from traditional rural life to the bustling capital. The disorienting effects of rapid modernisation are a theme not only in the other film from China but also in a documentary shot in Nepal and a fiction inspired by the 26/11 bombings in Bombay. Many of this year’s films provide insights to the places people leave to study at LFS. Returning to shoot their graduation films many students see their countries again as if for the first time, through a new lens. Audiences here at the Barbican and online at the LFS website will venture to iconic Italian sites, Sri Lankan temples, small town Ireland, the Windy City, Athens, the Big Apple, Paris, war-torn Baghdad, Bulgaria, Portugal, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, not forgetting English moorlands and shorelines.

Dear Mr. Wind, EDITOR, Alexa, 15m
Rafael Medina Adalfio I began photography in 2005 at the Art Institute Martin Tovar & Tovar; I was them apprenticed to Oswaldo Blanco with whom I spent the following two years exploring B&W traditional photography in everyday life. Between 2011 and 2013 I honed my technical and creative skills whilst studying the MA Filmmaking at the LFS, primarily focusing on working as a Cinematographer. I contributed to 20+ short films and also served as the Head of the LFS Photographic Society. When making my films I like to employ different and creative ways of using light, often unconventionally and based on my own observations of life. My cinematography includes carefully planned off-centred subjects and unusual angles. I have a particular passion for B&W film, particularly on celluloid, but am also excited by the vast possibilities of digital formats. I am currently working on several projects as either Cinematographer or Producer.

I was born and raised in Athens, Greece. From a young age I liked photography and still practice it a lot. Trying to discover what really drives me, I went through a lot of things professionally. Filmmaking-wise I worked as an editor but it was a lonely profession so I decided to continue my studies and applied for the LFS MA Filmmaking. I now work as a freelance 1st AC in Athens, Greece.

Orok Duke Born and raised in southern Nigeria, Orok Duke has always been an avid daydreamer & story teller. While nurturing his growing love for cinema, he developed his visual signature via intensive studies in Fine Arts throughout secondary school and A-levels. He took up Media Production at The American Intercontinental University of London. After receiving two BFA honours, he further pursued his passion for filmmaking via the MA Filmmaking course at the renowned LFS. Now a Londonbased film director, he aims to bring passion and contribute to the industry - death, love, reality and the desire to escape from it - those are the various themes that inspire his filmmaking. He aims to reveal alternative, twisted views of serious subject matters through strong, unique, visual crafting.

My filmmaking education began as an autodidactic director filming stories with a Super 8 camera. I progressed a great deal during my two years on the MA Filmmaking course at LFS, having learned about and practiced within all the different roles that make up a film crew. Now, my work as a director is greatly supported by this knowledge. I am also grateful to have learned from mistakes I’ve made with past films. Now that my professional career has started, I am working as a director/editor for the French TV channel Canal +. I am also currently editing a short film for another LFS student. As a director, I continue to make short films and have started to write a feature film. I am based in Paris but continue working in London. Obscured, DIRECTOR/PRODUCER, Red Camera, 10m, LFS, 2012

He went on to develop his performance work in TV and in just his fourth appearance in a lead role, he was nominated Best Actor in the National TV Awards Ceremony in 2006. Owen Laird Born in Glasgow, Owen moved to London in 2008 to study at Ravensbourne College. In 2010 he entered the LFS where he steadily shaped his own cinematic style to shooting films. He met cinematographer Howard Atherton BSC in 2011 and soon became his apprentice, taking a break from the school for a number of terms to work with Howard on the feature film All Things To All Men. Working under Howard and having such an accomplished cinematographer as a mentor has helped Owen fine-tune his own skills in lighting and credits Howard for making him the confident and adept cinematographer he is now. Owen returned to LFS and in twelve months shot four graduation films; Il Tour Di Davide, Thirteen Blue, Botsgang and his prized piece, Loyal. At the moment Owen is prepping with director and fellow graduate Colum Eastwood on the Northern Ireland Screen funded horror The Cottage.

Christine Sherwood Born in New Jersey and raised in California, Christine was always fascinated about the journey people took that lead them to where they were. She has indulged her fascination creatively through photography, acting/voice-over and writing. She has worked various jobs from being an assistant at Creative Artists Agency for nearly five years to working in a metals company painting motorcycle parts using an electrostatic process and everywhere else in between. These life experiences and more has allowed her to step into others’ shoes or safety gloves as needed to seek out and experience life from different perspectives. Europe was the right place to develop her skillset as a filmmaker as her interests were always piqued by realistic storytelling that revolved around raw emotions. Christine looks forward to continuing her film career both here in Europe as well as the States and is currently developing a feature length script.

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Moussa has lived between Lebanon and England for most of his life. He attended the American University of Beirut (AUB) where he completed a Studio Arts degree before deciding he wanted to learn more about the process of filmmaking. While at Arts School, he made several videos that documented various aspects of his environment and presented the subjects only through the use of imagery and sound. These videos were usually two to three minutes in length and never featured actors or spoken dialogue. It was this form of storytelling that eventually became the basis for his graduation film, Lubnan.

Aditi Verma From New Delhi to London, Tara Verma’s journey into the world of filmmaking has been a unique one. Bringing on board the cross-cultural vibe of this global world, she injects her bit of ‘masala’ into the British palate of cinema. So what does she exactly do, you ask? Well, she invented a new term for it “Preditor: A producer who takes the concepts and wisdom of post and applies it to the pre-production phase.” Story is king in her world, but the sneaky prime minister – the editing process, holds the actual power. Throughout her school experience, she has been involved in various aspects of filmmaking to get a more rounded education but towards the end of the program, she tapered off to hone her skills in the art of being a chameleon, pretty much like the dreadlocked alien in Predator. Incidentally her favourite quote in the meeting rooms whether editing or producing, is “If it bleeds, we can kill it.” You’d be surprised how much that applies to filmmaking.

The Masters in Screenwriting at the London Film School is an intensive one year programme with the focus on developing the writer’s voice in the context of a world class film school where we make over 170 films each year. Screenwriting students work alongside directors, actors, editors and producers developing their script editing as well as screenwriting skills and gaining a practical understanding of the course philosophy that screenwriting is filmmaking – with some MAS grads actually going on to direct their own screenplays. As we know it takes time, tenacity and talent to develop a career as a screenwriter. This is the eighth year of the MA Screenwriting programme at LFS and many graduates are now working professionally across the industry in development, production and on their own projects in companies as diverse as Matador, Scottfree, Lionsgate, Power to the Pixel and Focus Features.

Kefi Chadwick who is already a successful playwright has just finished filming her short Girl Power - a collaboration with MAF graduate Ben Bee, starring Jason Flemying, Alice Lowe and Dakota Blue Richards. She also has commissions from New York based production company Melenchuck Williams, and a TV drama project in development with Noho Film and TV. Other collaborations with MA filmmaking graduates include Maria Hummer’s script for Ben Aston and Noah Castro with Corin Taylor while MAS graduate and writer/director Priyamvada Narayanan recently won Best Foreign Short at the Californian International Film Festival with her short The Breadfruit Tree and Rachel Smith took first place in the Rhode Island Screenplay competition with her grad script - a romantic comedy titled Fix You Up.

Ben Clearly meanwhile followed on his success last year in winning the Blue Cat screenplay award in Los Angeles with a commission from RTE, Ireland’s national broadcaster to write seven episodes of a children’s TV series. On the production side Ines Braga is a key member of the development team at multi-platform company Power To the Pixel, while MAS grad Lucia Lopez was recently appointed as Head of Development at Matador. Projects appearing in a cinema near you in 2014 also include Vahid Hakimzadeh’s first feature as a writer-director Greater Things, shot on Super 16mm in the UK, Japan and Switzerland. The cinematographer was Camera d’Or nominated Ghasem Ebrahimian and the cast includes cult Japanese jazz musician Toshinori Kondo and actress-turned-director Kaori Momoi, a 5-time Japanese academy award winner, and veteran of Kurosawa and Imamura. These are just a few of our recent credits from past graduates on the screenwriting programme. Today however we are highlighting the work of the 2013 graduating year with a selection of rehearsed readings from their feature projects, directed by Jonas Grimås and introduced by Gub Neal, with story worlds ranging from the forests of Anatolia to the backstreets of Hong Kong and Saigon, from 1930’s Berlin to Dickensian London. There’s a body-swap drama, a diesel punk spy thriller, revenge and fantasy, sci-fi and romance, all shaped around classic themes of love and betrayal, sexual and social politics, coming of age and self-discovery. We hope you will join with us in celebrating the hard work, intelligence and talent of the graduating class of 2013 while remembering that these scenes are selected from works in progress – as we all are. Laura Biggar Laura is a born storyteller. With three older brothers, she was bred from a young age to come up with embellished stories that would explain why the couch was broken, why there was a hole in the wall or why a fire was blazing in the backyard. Laura’s affinity for storytelling has since translated into a love for film and television. After studying film at McGill University, she wanted to learn more about the craft of writing for the screen. With a penchant for high tea, football and depressing weather, the MA Screenwriting programme at LFS was a perfect fit. Her writing interests include comedy and drama. Laura is back in Canada and developing several projects including her next feature and several short films. She also enjoys reading fiction and poetry.
Lawrie was born and raised in Urmston, Manchester. Nobody’s ever really heard of the place but he was delivered in the same hospital as Morrissey, though that’s where the comparisons end. He went to Oxford University where he graduated in English Language and Literature. He then worked in social media market research for three years, specialising in the movie industry and learning mainly to make sure your Facebook privacy settings are as high as it is humanly possible to set them. He is currently based in London, expanding his slate of feature ideas and scripts. Sometimes he writes comedy, sometimes he writes characterdriven drama, sometimes he writes both. Sometimes he writes biographies about himself in the third person and finds it strange. Robert McMillan Originally hailing from Harrow, I attended the University of Nottingham's School of Biosciences, where I earned an honours degree in Animal Science. Involvement with Nottingham University's International Society brought to my attention the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET); following graduation I applied to it and was accepted. On JET, I spent five years living in the Gifu Prefecture, Japan; I taught English at Elementary and Junior High Schools, participated in and developed cultural events with local international societies, and ultimately was appointed a Regional Prefectural Advisor, responsible for training other teachers and planning skill development conferences. My time in Japan allowed me to focus on my own passion of writing and my desire to take that further led me to the London Film School and its MA Screenwriting programme. My ambition is simply to write the best scripts I can - and make a career out of it!

Danny de Warren
Farhana Bhula is currently in post-production on her first feature film, Bonobo. Directed by Matthew Hammett Knott, Bonobo is a black comedy about an uptight mother in search of her daughter who has taken up residence at a raucous commune led by a group of hippie misfits. Prior to Bonobo, she was Associate Producer on Amit Gupta’s Jadoo, which had its world premiere at the Berlinale in 2013. She trained under established producer Richard Holmes from pre-production through to theatrical release.
After reading Theology at Cambridge, Danny joined the LFS’s MA Filmmaking programme where he focused his attention on script development and creative producing. After receiving his MA and completing the Fast Forward Producing course, Danny has been working as assistant to the executive pro-ducer of a highprofile BBC drama series and as assistant to the CEOs of a startup film production and finance company. Alongside this Danny has also recently produced a short film funded by Film London and his LFS gra-duation film has been selected for a number of festivals and awards. Danny continues to develop his own projects, looking ahead to his first feature film production, as well as gaining as much varied experience in film and high-end television drama as he can.
Farhana recently joined the development team at Endor Productions, run by Hilary Bevan Jones. Farhana has produced successful short films with Matthew Knott, including Ouroboros, starring BAFTAwinner Anamaria Marinca, and On This Island, which won Best British Short at Encounters Film Festival.
HE TOOK HIS SKIN OFF FOR ME, the graduation film of LFS MA Filmmaking student Ben Aston, was produced by Fast Forward participant Fiona Lamptey.

In 2012 LFS launched Fast Forward Producing: The Whole Story. The six-month, eight workshop course took thirteen new producers through the entire process of developing, packaging, financing, shooting, post-producing and selling their films. Five months later, Farhana Bhula one of the thirteen, had shot Bonobo, her first feature.
On the course, producer Fiona Lamptey met LFS MA Filmmaker Ben Aston, who pitched his ambitious graduation film He Took His Skin off for Me, an adaptation of a short story by award-winning writer Maria Hummer. “From the very first pitch, I was hooked,” says Fiona.”I knew if executed correctly, it could be a fantastic, slightly bonkers, evocative piece of film making. It was completely independent production, which called on all the training I had on Fast Forward Producing - from raising the finance on Kickstarter to assembling our SFX wonder team. Everything we were taught was put into practise and applied throughout.”

Farhana explains, “As a direct result of this course, I feel extremely comfortable talking about EIS and legal frameworks, I am confident about building a team, and more importantly carving out a personal identity as a producer. Since completing the course, I have raised my entire budget on an EIS - with the help of lawyers who also mentored us on the course - and gone into production. There is no way I would have had the courage or knowledge to do this so swiftly and convincingly without the training I received at LFS.”
