LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Dear readers, Just over six months ago we found ourselves inheriting a magazine that called for the responsibility of continuing the tradition of celebrating fashion, lifestyle, arts and culture that vibrantly live in our college community and exist in all corners of the world at large. We are very proud to share the first issue of theLOOK magazine for the 2017-2018 school year. Our contributors worked hard to style, photograph, research, write, recruit models and Alana Wimer’s ‘18 gifted knack for graphic design with Elizabeth Powell’s ‘18 talent for production and photography has allowed this issue come to life. Inspired by the recent resurgence in plaid, tweed, and all things vintage, our team has brought together current trends with timeless looks that have continued to guide and inspire the world of fashion and lifestyle. This edition takes a peak into Conn’s past and has never made pizza look so iconic. We pay homage to the movie “Mystic Pizza”, an 80s classic that is set right on our doorstep in Mystic and drift back in time to look at the style guru’s of Conn’s class of 1978. As a fashion publication our goals are to showcase the diverse styles that make our campus unique and provide everyone a chance to explore and pursue their aspirations by building a strong foundation in the fashion, media and publishing sectors. If you have any suggestions, comments, or are interested in joining the team, please email us at gcarapez@conncoll.edu and yyildiz@conncoll.edu. We are eager to hear everyone’s opinion and want to involve all members of the College community. In the words of the legendary Bill Cunningham, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” Yours, Grace & Yoldas

FALL TRENDS

written by Marianna Wells

Fall fashion: the holy grail of clothing, styles, and aesthetically pleasing backgrounds for your “personal photography,” aka, the ‘gram. Here are 10 standout trends to elevate your look for the season. Note: On this list, I am not including basics, such as the perfectly tight pair of black jeans ripped at the knee, white and grey t-shirts, black leather jackets, booties, and chokers. Instead, I have chosen to include more fashion forward pieces that I am hoping y’all will intermix with the aforementioned staples already in your cramped wardrobe.

i. White Jeans: please, please, please. Disregard the archaic rule that I myself used to follow: “no white after Labor Day.” Go for a girlfriend cut with frayed edges, or a high waisted, cropped, and flared pair to elevate a basic tee and some loafers. If you are feeling adventurous you can even throw on

some red boots because red is the color for fall this year. To combine two dominant trends, wear a white jean skirt! ii. Speaking of: SHOES! Slides had their moment last year, and we continue to see them this season, particularly those ubiquitous Gucci fur-lined slides. However, they have taken the backseat to the platform loafer. Try a deep chestnut, red or bright yellow to add a pop to a basic outfit. Feel free to continue the menswear trend with a padded blazer. iii. Schoolgirl chic. It’s fitting; the year after I stop wearing a kilt to school everyday, they’re back in fashion. Try a schoolgirl inspired mini with a plaid or tweed design tucked into a bulky sweater and the aforementioned platform loafers for a chic and comfortable day!

vi. One Shoulder Tops: an updated version of the boho off-the- shoulder trend. Try a long sleeve alternative for a weather friendly and dramatic version of the trend. For inspiration: Brandon Maxwell’s mini leather dress from his fall ready to wear collection. vii. For fall of 2017, two diverging bag trends have appeared: 1. Micro bags, like those by Coach and Mulberry, in a bright print and Moschino-esque structure. 2. Oversized bags, shapeless or structured, with a plain or crocodile print and an innovative handle, such as fur or a scarf. Read: Alexander Wang. To adapt these runway trends in your life, try a smaller bag for a minimalistic take or re-purpose a scarf as a handle. viii. Statement Earrings: Accessories are having a moment. Chunky statement earrings and hordes of delicate mixed metal rings are fantastic.

iv. Silk scarves: for the last year and a half, chokers have reigned supreme. If you are as Try these affordable Topshop earrings to sick of them as I am, try a thin add intrigue to a basic outfit silk scarf tied in line with your ix. INSIGHT INTO MODEL LIFE “Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty” - Derek Zoolander

18 theLOOK

From an outsider’s perspective, fashion is luxurious, desirable and upscale. Behind this misconception, we are often naïve to the true aspects that make a model successful. Fashion Week, and modeling as a whole, is intense. It is not as simple as people think it is. It is physically taxing on the mind, and body. I had the privilege to conduct interviews on four friends of mine: William (Willem) Los, Gordon Winarick, Elizabeth Boggs and Diana Silvers, as a way to get a look into the day-today modeling life. After the interviews, I can tell you that there is way more to modeling than we realize. Modeling is like an onion; you have to peel it back one layer at a time. features, it doesn’t mean that they too can’t not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.” I encourage anyone who reads these profiles to shoot them a follow on Instagram and follow them on the hopeful road to stardom. DIANA SILVERS Age: 19 | City: New York | Years Modeling: 2

Agency: IMG Worldwide Who do you model for? Whoever books me! But I think I’m most recognizable from my work with Urban Outfitters and H&M. When and how did you first get involved in modeling? I was signed with Wilhelmina LA when I was 16 but because school was priority, my parents didn’t want me working. I did an editorial for British Elle that sort of put me on IMG’s radar and when I was 17, they reached out to me. I met one of their representatives in LA right around the time I got accepted to NYU and signed with them. Perfect timing. What personal and professional accomplishments are you most proud of?

I just had my first spread in a Vogue magazine (a beauty editorial for Vogue Taiwan Sept Issue) and next month, I will be in Vogue India! They interviewed me too, which is awesome. On a personal level, I’m most proud of being a student while managing modeling and acting. If you weren’t modeling, what would you be doing? If I wasn’t acting, I wouldn’t be modeling. And if I wasn’t acting, then I would have chosen a pre-law / political science route at NYU. Being a model, it’s almost imperative you stay in great shape. What does your workout routine look like? I played competitive tennis for about 9 years, so for me, working out is a lifestyle. I like to work out to improve at something. With that being said, I’ve taken up boxing and long distance running. I hope to run in the New York City Marathon one day. What is your go to outfit? Jeans, t shirt and sneakers or penny loafers. What are your favorite and least favorite parts about fashion week? My favorite thing about fashion week is seeing everyone put on their best clothes to make an impression. It’s is fascinating. Least favorite part is the not knowing what the hell is going on. But honestly, that’s just this industry in general. Any preshow/preshoot prep you to do get yourself ready? Not really, no. Other than being showered and well rested, nothing special. What is one thing about modeling that most people don’t know that they should? While the idea of modeling is really glamorous, and parts of it are really glamorous, it is a career that is very taxing on our bodies and minds, as are most jobs! Favorite junk/cheat food? Mint chip ice cream or homemade brownies. 19

ELIZABETH BOGGS Age: 21 | City: Los Angeles | Years Modeling: 2

Agency: DT Model Management, LA Models Who do you model for? a variety of brands and designers for clothing, shoes, hair, makeup, etc. Favorite designer you have modeled or walked for? They aren’t really a specific designer, but my favorite company I have modeled for is Free People. My favorite designer I walked for is Rachel Comey. If you weren’t modeling, what would you be doing? I would be going to school (which I am now doing as well as modeling) How much pressure is there to stay in great shape? There is a lot of pressure to stay fit in New York. The bookers just want you to look your best when you go out to meet clients and designers, but the idea that you need to be a 2 or smaller is very apparent. What is your go-to outfit? Ripped high waisted black/ dark wash jeans, leather wjacket, and black booties What are your favorite and least favorite parts about fashion week? Favorite: 20 theLOOK

meeting designers and getting booked to walk in shows.. obviously lol.. Also for me I really like running around the city because I’m new to New York so I feel like I’m always noticing new things even in places I think I know pretty well.. and least favorite: being expected to go to 10 castings in one day and not miss any, being on call 24/7, not having time to eat real meals, overall just being exhausted, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Any preshow/preshoot prep you do to get yourself ready? I usually will do a face mask / pore strips for physical prep and then listen to positive pump up music to get myself in the right headspace for mental prep. Do you have a favorite stylist or photographer you like to shoot with or have shot with? I have a lot of photographers / stylists I like in New York, but my favorite photographer, who also styles, is Briana Garcia (owner of Tiki Girl) from California.

GODON WINARICK Age: 22 | City: New York | Years Modeling: 3 Agency: MAJOR Who do you model for? RALPH LAUREN, APC When and how did you first get involved in modeling? I was working at a restaurant in Miami. A man came up to me and scouted me. Favorite designer you have modeled or walked for? COACH If you weren’t modeling, what would you be doing? Studying acupuncture and training to become a spiritual/emotional healer. How much pressure is there to stay in great shape? Staying in great shape has always been important to me, it’s more than just looking good. You need to live in your body, so I love to take care of it. What is your go-to outfit? Boots, blue jeans, TSHIRT. What are your favorite and least favorite parts about fashion week? LEAST: running from casting to casting and then waiting in lines. FAVORITE: getting to be part of someone’s creative vision. What are your favorite things to do in your free time? Favorite TV Show, movie, music, etc? Cooking ( I make some great pancakes ), playing guitar, reading and writing. Listen to a ton of Frank Ocean, Daniel Caesar, Miguel. Do you have a favorite stylist or photographer you like to shoot with or have shot with? I love working at RALPH LAUREN. The team there is a blast, always makes the day so much fun. The clothes fit perfectly and the materials are the best. What is one thing about modeling that most people don’t know that they should? There is no real definition of beauty. These are just people that get hired to do a job, and what

society makes “models” out to be, Is not truly reality. Modeling is all about self expression. Favorite junk/cheat food? French fries dipped in a chocolate milk shake. Ice cold almond milk with a box of special K with red berries.

EYE BROW TRENDS 2017 by Juliet Wilson

Whether we believe it or not, eyebrows speak volumes, acting as an essential outfit accessory. From the barely-there brows of the ‘90’s to the voluminous, “Lily Collins”-esque brows (and I’m sure many of us have experienced Lily Collins brow envy), the art of creating the perfect eyebrow has constantly evolved over time. 2017 has also shown us some crazy and unforgettable trends, with some remarkably natural, full, and bold styles. Brow carving is one of the most attention grabbing styles to take over Instagram. From feather to barbed wire to dragon brows, our social media newsfeeds have been flooded with this new arch art. Alexa Link, the creator of the carved brow movement, is a Texas-based makeup artist, wowing fashion bloggers and other artists with her intricate designs. Different from anything we have ever seen before, the art is much less about the styling of the

hairs and more about creating designs around the edges of the arches. So, how does she achieve this look? Link traces the lines around the outer perimeter of the eyebrows with colorful eyeliner to create defined edges. She then finishes the look by using eye shadow to blend the edges creating a smoky effect. Meanwhile, the feather, barbed wire, and dragon brows are more focused on the manipulation of the eyebrow hairs themselves. This art involves gently separating the hairs with brow gel into funky and never before seen styles. Clear brow gel, eye shadow, and glitter are necessities for creating these trending looks. The fun colors and techniques make these simple yet adventurous eyebrows showstoppers. Whether we are a fan of these revolutionary brows or not, they are surely making their mark on social media! Imagine what 2018’s brows will look like!

ROOM OF HER OWN Nadia Bednarczuk & Hannah Sawyer

Down in The Village sits ridge 23. An exquisitely decorated home by a group of five senior girls. Emilia decorated her room this year with the perfect equilibrium of edge, poise, and comfort factor. With multiple lighting options, the room can be transformed for a study session, hosting different social events, and hanging out with close friends. Specifically, Emilia’s white lantern lights were bought from Amazon.com and hung with clear double sided tape. The glass bulb lights hung around the perimeter of her room are hung with command hooks and bring another light source to the room, especially great for a study sessions. Emilia highlighted her hobbies through a variety of decor. Some include: surfboards, longboards, posters, and throw pillows. Using functional objects like a longboard as decor makes for a less cluttered dorm room

and a more home-like atmosphere. Eye catching products like Emilia’s tapestries were bought on Urban Outfitters and her throw pillows were found on Etsy. Comfort is such an important part of a college room. After a long day every camel just wants to go back to his or her room and nap or binge watch some Netflix. Having a fuzzy throw blanket like Emilia’s is crucial for watching movies and avoiding homework. Emilia found hers on Wayfair which is a great website for interior decorating.
