While searching for women’s swimsuits to feature, Vilebrequin’s men’s swim trunks beat out the female competition. Wishing these trunks came in bikinis for me, I had to feature them. Coming in prints of all kinds, there is a nautical theme throughout much of the collection. Octopuses, lobsters, and starfish are just Snowflakes, reindeer, some of the few crustaceans that are significant, however one pair truly caught my eye. beach waves, and leaves are all combined to create one pair of seasonal swim trunks. Their fun, bright colors are used in a classy way, and can appeal to men of all ages.

t

relaxa Inspired by Italy, and its Hotel II Pellicano, Lubov Azria created a resort collection that exudes ease and simplicity. Implementing subtle color-blocking techniques, with colors that aren’t too harsh when combined, Azria takes the trend and makes it her own. The crisp whites, bold lines, and thin strips of navy and cream that divide colors makes the clothes wearable, something that cannot be said for many resort collections. Kimono-inspired shifts, maxi dresses that give off the vibe “Oh, I just threw this thing on”, and separates that appear to be one are also prevalent in this unique collection.

While his prices are high, his ideas are clear: he wants women to feel extravagant and lavish realistically. He manipulates fabric throughout his collection in a manner that makes the clothes appear to be something they are not. While using lush colors such as golds, emerald greens, and bold reds, he also incorporates patterns that pop. Marc Jacobs’ resort collection for men is eclectic, to say the least. He mixes patterns, he plays with the proportions of jackets and pants, and combines different fabrics—all of which create a distinct yet cohesive collection. One of my favorite men’s collections of the season, Jacobs’ looks each has a certain quirk. Whether it is a bright red jacket to enhance a navy pantsuit, patent leather shoes to spice up an all-white tuxedo, or raincoats in unusual colors to pantsuit, patent leather shoes to spice up an all-white t brighten a khaki classic, there is always something different to each outfit. Taking on the old and reinventing them into a new, Marc Jacobs never ceases to rethink, recreate, and redo.

Summer to winter By: Hannah Feeney ‘16 and Alheli Garza ‘16 Try something new and mix up your traditional winter wardrobe with your favorite summer pieces. Don’t let the cold stop you from bringing out those florals and warm-weather whites!

1. SHORTS - Putting on tights underneath your

shorts and adding a blazer will allow you to wear your shorts in the winter without freezing outside. Throwing on a scarf and boots would make the fact that you’re wearing shorts in December more acceptable.

2. SUMMER SKIRT- Just like with the shorts,

putting on any colored tights underneath your favorite summer skirt, adding boots and a sweater will give you a chic winter look while you’re still showing off your summery skirt. You can also throw on a scarf to make your outfit more interesting.

3. FLORAL DRESSES –Wearing a blazer and boots with your pretty floral dress will keep you warm and cute. Tone down bright florals with earthy winter tones.

4.WHITE DENIM- You can always find ways

to rock your white denim even if it’s after Labor Day. Topping them with a plaid shirt, a neutral scarf, and a coat will make your summer denim look more winter white.

5. LACE – There is one thing we love more

than lace, and that is fur! So what could be better than throwing on a fur coat atop your lace piece? Right, absolutely nothing. Combining your lace with oxblood or brown pieces will create wintrier look.

Erica Lovett ‘14 What I love most about animal print is that it will never go out of style. It can be dressed up for a night out or made more casual for a day of work or classes. It’s versatile and fun, making it a perfect staple for any wardrobe. Erica Lovett, a junior at Connecticut College, is not afraid to be bold. Not only does she rock her cheetah print top, but she also mixes and matches colors and patterns to create a cool look. The key to Erica’s outfit is finding the right balance without going overboard. The dark wash of her jeans allows the more vibrant aspects of her outfit to stand out and her beige colored boots match the color tones of her top. By incorporating patterned, colorful pieces with more simple ones like her jeans and boots, Erica has created a nice balance to her outfit. The subtle pattern of her bright red scarf complements her top perfectly and adds a pop of color. One of Erica’s favorite stores to shop at is H&M, which offers fashion forward options at affordable prices to fit any college student’s budget. Thanks for showing us how to incorporate some color and print into our outfits, Erica! I know I’m inspired to go out and buy some funkier tops and accessories.

Connor Quilty ‘15 and Peter Stoll ‘15 Good fashion sense is not just for the girls at Connecticut College. Sophomores Peter Stoll and Conor Quilty are proof that the guys here know how to dress well too. Peter jokingly told me he was going for the “fall chic” look, but in all seriousness, I’m impressed with these two. Peter’s plaid shirt is a great staple for fall. By pairing it with corduroys and loafers, he looks put together without trying too hard. Conor’s leather jacket is another staple item that will never go out of style. He switches it up from the typical jeans look to a pair of dark green pants, which are a perfect color for fall. The two boys embody the quintessential fall style but enhance it by adding their own personal touches. When asked where he likes to shop, Conor claimed his mom picks out his clothes, but I think he just wanted to keep his fashion secrets to himself. If not, keep up the good work Mrs. Quilty!

As

the House Fellow of KB, Carly Guidicci has found that with great responsibility come fabulous advantages! One of the benefits of being a House Fellow is a two-room suite with a fireplace and private bathroom. Carly discovered several ways to turn the space into her own with ornate wall decor and by adding unique pieces from home. When designing her suite, Carly wanted to make sure that it really felt like home. It’s now a space where she can do it all: homework, exercise, and relax. She absolutely refused to be limited by college dorm accommodations and suggests that all students find ways to personalize their spaces One of Carly’s bedroom walls is covered with an too, even if you aren’t quite so lucky to elaborate tapestry from Urban Outfitters. Tapestries are score one of these awesome lairs. a great way to break up the dreary, white walls.

This built-in cabinet is one of Carly’s favorite features of the suite. It serves as great storage where she can keep all of her loose books and DVDs!

Personalize your space with temporary adhesive wallpaper like Carly’s green and pink elephants! Find one you that best fit you at websites like www.onekingslane.com One of the advantages of living in a House Fellow Suite is having most of your furniture provided by Conn! Carly’s room came with a couch, comfy chair, lamps, and storage space!

Carly’s room embodies her life both at home in San Diego and here at Conn. Banners from her high school, posters of her home town, and Conn volleyball photos are pinned to bulletin boards in her bedroom.

Carly suggests that storage doesn’t always have to look like storage. These Target boxes serve as great decoration that hides the mess! These hooks are also a great way of keeping your small items organized and easy to find.

9 Ways to Keep Warm By: Maddy Harris Are your fingers and toes starting to sense the dropping temperature? Or maybe you’re finding that ice-cold Frappuccino’s just aren’t doing the trick anymore. If you like feeling warm and fuzzy inside during the winter months like I do, then this article will find you well. Being from Maine, I’ve grown to appreciate the simple things you can do to keep toasty while the snow accumulates outside. I came to Connecticut with the impression that the winter here would be milder than in Maine, but I’ve already started feeling the bite. I’ve started gathering the necessities, and you can too with these ten easy-as-pie suggestions.

Entertaining: Holiday Recipes By: Rachel Robison ‘13 What better way to spread holiday cheer than through festive foods? This year, dare to dream beyond the typical sugar cookie. A pre-New Years Eve dinner party for your high school friends is the perfect opportunity to try out one of these wonderfully festive recipes.

Spicy Gingerbread Cookies Source: Smittedkitchen.com

Ingredients:

6 Cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon baking powder 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 ½ teaspoons ground cloves 1 teaspoon finely ground pepper 1 ½ teaspoons coarse salt 2 sticks unsalted butter 1 cup packed dark- brown sugar 2 large eggs 1 cup unsulfured molasses

Whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, spices and salt in a large bowl and set aside. Beat butter and brown sugar together in a large bowl with an electric mixer until fluffy. Mix in eggs and molasses. Add flour mixture, mixing on low until just combined. Divide dough into thirds and wrap each in plastic. Refrigerate until cold and firm, about one hour or up to two days. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll out dough on a lightly floured work surface to a 1/4-inch thick. Cut into shapes of your choice, such as snowflakes or gingerbread men. Spread two inches apart on baking sheets lined with parchment paper, and refrigerate until the cookies firm up again, about 15 minutes. Bake cookies until crisp but not dark, 12 to 14 minutes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks.

DIY: Under Wraps by: Madeline Eng

As the holiday season approaches, you may be frantically searching for the perfect gifts to give to your friends and family. What might not be at the forefront of your mind, though, is how to wrap them. Here are three simple DIY wrapping projects to help you out. You can use them during the holiday season, birthdays, and other events as well! Parcel Package Wrapping Sometimes printed wrapping paper can get overwhelming, so why not keep it simple by wrapping your items in package paper and embellishing it from there? The blogger from “Man Made DIY” (http://manmadediy. com/chris/posts/639-how-to-make-typographic-gift-wrap) wrapped his items uniformly in package paper with handmade typographic lettering across the present in place of a traditional gift tag. While I like the idea, the thought of taking an X-Acto knife to all of those letters with spaces in the middle seemed tedious. My spin on it is a little easier—just use typographic stickers adhered to one edge of your package paper-wrapped gift! You can also embellish the finished wrapping with ribbons, bows, and more.

DIY Gift Bow At some point, you have probably seen these elegant gift bows, whether it is in a specialty greeting card store or the gift aisle at a pharmacy. But have you ever wondered how to make them? It’s actually fairly easy. To start, you will need: • 1 piece of patterned paper (from a magazine, newsprint, or scrap paper), that is, at least 9 inches by 8 inches in size • 1 pair of scissors and/or a paper cutter • Glue •Stapler and staples Directions: 1. Begin by cutting the patterned paper into nine ¾” strips that are at least 9 inches in length using scissors or a paper cutter. Leave 3 of the strips full length, cut off 1 inch from 3 of the strips, cut off 2 inches from two of the strips, and cut the last one down to 3½ inches. 2. Form each of the strips (except for the 3½-long one) into a figure eight, as shown, and secure by stapling it in the center. Make the 3½ piece into a ring and secure with a drop of glue. 3. Starting with the largest figure eights, put a drop of glue in the center, near the staple, and stack the three together. 4. Continue to glue and layer the figure eights as they decrease in size. Glue the ring in the cen-

Sonobe Cube Origami, or the Japanese art of paper folding, is put to practical use in this project. Rather than using traditional origami paper, you can create more visual appeal by using old magazine pages, newsprint, maps, wrapping paper, or any kind of patterned paper. Materials: All you’ll need is six sheets of square paper - 6 inches by 6 inches, or larger, works best.

Directions: 1. From each sheet of paper, you will create one unit that makes up one of the six sides of the cube. To make each unit, begin by folding the paper in half horizontally. 2. Unfold and fold the edge of the top and the edge of the bottom to the center so that the folds divide the sheet into fourths horizontally. Unfold.

3. Maintaining the orientation of the paper, fold the left bottom corner upward to the closest fold so it creates a triangle. Repeat with the top right corner. 4. Keeping those corners creased, fold the top edge and bottom edge to the center horizontal line again. 5. Again, make sure you keep the same orientation of the folded paper. Fold the top left corner down to the bottom of the folded paper and fold the bottom right corner to the top (folded this way, the paper should look like a really slanted parallelogram). Unfold the corners you just creased.

7. Flip the shape so you see the flat side, with no visible creases or tucks, and orientate it so it is longest vertically. 8. Fold the top corner down and the bottom corner up to create a square in the center. This creates the first unit of your cube. Repeat with the five other pieces of paper. 9. To put the cube together, make sure the central square of each unit makes up one side of the cube and tuck ends into the units adjacent to it. It may take a bit of experimenting, but in the end you will have a secure box to wrap your gift in. You can undo one unit of the box to insert a small item wrapped in tissue paper inside.

Happy crafting! For more DIY ideas from theLook, check out our blog at http://thelookcc.tumblr.com.

Stepping into Focus, Frame by Frame By: Gracie Pearlman ‘14

When I first came across Warby Parker, I was a senior in high school; my older sisters and brother had just gotten home for the holidays and were wearing these new, thickglasses. In fact, my brother and sister were wearing the same frame, “Thatcher.” I immediately, being the youngest of four, wanted what they had. Always having worn glasses, I convinced my mom to buy me these edgy glasses as I was entering my freshman year of college. What I didn’t know was how ahead of the curve my siblings had been, and where this company would be today. In a recent article in Vanity Fair Magazine, David Gilboa and Neil Blumenthal, cofounders of Warby Parker, discussed the origins of their company, what its intentions were and currently are, and their goals for the future. Gilboa couldn’t explain, “’why technology that has been around for hundreds of years should cost more than this magical, $200 iPhone’” or why someone should spend $700 dollars on glasses like he once did on a pair of Prada frames he later lost. And so, Warby Parker was founded in the hopes that no one would have to spend more than they should on eyewear.

The name? Warby Parker comes from one of Gilboa and Blumenthal’s favorite pop culture icons, Jack Kerouac. Discovering his personal journals, the cofounders found characters named Zagg Parker and Warby Pepper. Choosing their favorites, or as they claim, “the best from each,” Warby Parker was born. Together, Blumenthal, who worked with VisionSpring, a nonprofit that helps communities in need create and sell eyewear, Jeffrey Raider, a fellow Wharton graduate, Andrew Hunt, a man who knew there was a way to create eyewear for less, and Gilboa realized their niche: the eyewear market is run solely by a few companies, leaving purchasers with few options. “By circumventing traditional channels and engaging with customers directly,” Warby Parker, exclusively online, provides “eyewear at a fraction of the price.” In addition to their prescription frames that are a mere $95, there is a purpose to their brand. Focused on the need of education and work while recognizing the lack of access to glasses that people have worldwide, they are like Tom’s in that they donate a pair of prescription glasses to someone in need with every purchase. 1. Frame by frame, they are allowing the world to step into focus. The timeline is essentially as easy as A, B, C… plus D and E.

A. Customers buy a pair of Warby Parker glasses. B. Warby Parker then donates the funding/glasses to non-profits like VisionSpring. C. The Partners with the non-profits help to train working people in developing countries on how to start or grow their own businesses. D. Those very entrepreneurs then sell those glasses to their communities, whom without them would not have access to these glasses. E. Said communities then purchase the glasses from local businesses, allowing them to work and study.

With their simultaneously vintage and modern design, Warby Parker has over 50 prescription frames and about 40 sunglass options for both men and women. Each frame has its own unique name, such as “Duckworth,” “Wiloughby,” or “Waldo,” and comes in a multitude of colors, from “Walnut Tortoise” to “Rum Cherry.” Nervous about purchasing online without trying the frames on first? Don’t fret. Warby offers each customer the option to have five frames sent to him or her for five days… for free! Send them back within those five days and order at will. Warby Parker is committed to creating exceptional glasses at an affordable price, and customer satisfaction is of utmost importance. Because all they really do is “believe that everyone has the right to see.”
