letter from the editors As the beginning of finals approach and the papers, presentations and exams pile up, there’s always one thing that’s just around the corner: SUMMER! For this issue, we decided to create a lookbook focusing on fun trends for the upcoming season - swimwear, beachy hair and make-up, and of course music festival do’s and don’t’s! We understand that this time of the year can be hectic so take a few minutes to flip through the next pages and escape into the summer that awaits. We are very excited to have collaborated with another student organization. In this issue, we’re featuring the dynamic, energetic, and always well dressed a cappella group, the CO CO Beaux! There will be mayhem, mischief and, yes, a giant inflatable cactus in each photograph so get ready! Thank you all for your amazing support! Happy Summer!

Every year, screaming girls and guys run into the Harkness Chapel in

hopes of hearing the smooth and sultry voices of the only all-male a cappella group on campus. The group is the Co Co Beaux, and “when they harmonize they always get them puffy eyes” (“Co Co Beaux” to “Kokomo”). I sat down with Ben Stepansky, a senior member of Co Co Beaux, to discuss the a cappella group; its members, the process, and the fashion. We all know these Breauxs melt hearts with their harmonies and dance moves, but I got an in depth look at what actually goes into the final productions. These guys have fun, work hard, play hard, and “run out fast, and then they sing real slow”.

Q: How would you describe the members of the group? A: I would say each individual member brings a totally different dynamic to the

group. We have such a diverse group of guys that are involved in so many different activities on campus; honor council, sports, a variety of different clubs. It’s interesting because we have one thing in common - an odd love for a cappella and it brings a great dynamic to the group - we all bond really hard.

Q: What’s the audition process like? A: Well, all the a cappella groups have signups at the beginning of the year. We have

auditions Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in September, and depending on the amount of guys we have sign up, we usually have sessions from about 10:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon. During the audition, they get to bring in their own song, we have them do some singing exercises, some scales, and that’s where we find out about their personality too. Once we have all those guys audition, that Sunday we narrow it down to the guys we want to have come back for callbacks. It would be on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and that could be anywhere from four to twelve guys depending on the lot that we get. So the callbacks are where we really find out if they are the right fit for Co Co Beaux. We have them sing a Co Co Beaux song, see how they would blend in the groups, and have them sing with actual group members. The callbacks are usually two hours long.

Q: And you made your CD last spring, right? A: Yes, last spring break. It’s available on iTunes for everyone (shame-

less promoting). It came out great, we worked with a guy named John Clark, who is renowned in the a cappella world, so we were lucky to be able to work with him. We spent 10 hours a day, 6 days a week recording this album so we are really pleased with the product.

Q: As you’re parting, do you have any advice for the members of Co Co Beaux or for the future of Co Co Beaux?

A: I guess just soak it all in when you can. When I got to college, people

said live it up for four years because you know how fast it goes by. I’d say yeah right, four years is a long time, and they were right. This has flown by. Co Co Beaux has been something really special for me; it got me off on the right foot in college. I have made amazing friends, and it has been great to be involved in something that is my passion, which is music, and make some of the best friends of my life. It has been one in the same, and I am so lucky. Being at rehearsals from 10:00 at night to midnight seems like a lot, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Q: Now Floralia’s coming up, does Co Co Beaux love Floralia, and

what are you guys planning on wearing?

A: Co Co Beaux loves Floralia. Every year we have our Co Co Beaux tent-

which is in THE front row every single year. Our “goats”, and Alex Marz, get up every year at 4:00 am and set up the tent. Everyone is welcome to stop by and visit. It’s a great day to spend with friends, all in one place. We don’t usually coordinate what we wear but we all bring our own distinct style.
