Pop-up - Around the World

Clouds Descending - Jem Southam

Ends Sun 15 March

Ends Sun 22 March

A pop-up is a flat, folded piece of paper, which magically turns into a three-dimensional picture when opened.

Leading photographer Jem Southam has been re-tracing Lowry’s footsteps along the Cumbrian coastline. Though Lowry is more commonly associated with Salford, he spent a great deal of time observing and recording industrial landscapes and harbour towns in this area.

This exhibition takes you on a tour through the magical world of popup. Travel to some of the great cities in the world and see how famous buildings and landmarks have proved a popular subject for pop-ups – even The Lowry! Along the way you will find out how pop-ups are made and you can even have a go at making one for yourself.

Southam’s journey has resulted in a remarkable series of images that focus on the remnants of Cumbria’s long and significant industrial past.

Of Thee I Sing

Giacomo Puccini Wed 25 February

David Sawer & Armando Iannucci Thu 26 February

George Gershwin Fri 27 & Sat 28 February

George Gershwin Sat 28 February

At times soaring and tender, at others heart-rending, Puccini’s Tosca is one of the world’s most popular operas.

The event of the season, this world première represents a meeting of major talents. Composer David Sawer, whose opera From Morning to Midnight was a great success for English National Opera in 2001, has created a new satirical operetta with writer and broadcaster Armando Iannucci. Set in the clinic of cosmetic surgery genius Doktor Needlemeier, whose slogan is ‘Putting Right what Nature Got Wrong’, Skin Deep is a darkly brilliant, up-to-theminute satire on a world where staying young and beautiful is all that matters, whatever the cost.

Get swept up in the glitz and glamour of 1930s politics, in two starspangled Broadway treats.

Its been four years since John P Wintergreen became President and his re-election campaign is in full swing. This time, however, people aren’t falling for his smooth slogans. The political situation spirals out of control, and before you know it the US faces a revolutionary dictatorship of blue shirts!

In this Pulitzer Prizewinning musical, Wintergreen’s chance of winning the Presidential election looks slim until he runs a campaign on the thing everyone wants – love. He stages a beauty pageant where first prize is his hand in marriage. French belle Diana Devereaux wins, but when the President falls for muffin-making Mary instead, Diana turns her rejection into an international scandal. Wintergreen needs a new idea to save the day, and maybe Mary can produce the answer…

Boeing-Boeing Mon 2 – Sat 7 February When Boeing-Boeing took off to a roar of laughter in London’s West End in 2007, the Daily Telegraph called it ‘the funniest show in London’. Directed by Olivier Award-winner Matthew Warchus, this hysterical production has since taken Broadway by storm. Audiences and critics have been unbuckling their seatbelts and rolling in the aisles for this first-class Tony Award-winning comedy (Best Revival 2008). Private Peaceful By Michael Morpurgo

Mon 2 – Sat 7 February Following the tremendous success of previous visits, Private Peaceful returns to The Lowry.

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. This remarkable book, winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year award, is by third Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo. The inspiration for Private Peaceful came from Morpurgo’s visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

The Holly and the Ivy Mon 16 – Sat 21 February The award-winning Middle Ground Theatre Company bring their highly acclaimed production of The Holly and the Ivy to The Lowry. Set in a Norfolk vicarage on Christmas Eve 1947, the vicar’s family gathers for the festive season. Peace and goodwill radiates from the warm-hearted elderly vicar, cared for by his young daughter. But with the arrival of two irritable aunts and an errant daughter, the emotional veneer is skilfully peeled away. As skeletons tumble from closets and stones are turned over, family members are forced to confront their regrets and secret anxieties. Even the lovable vicar is not immune to the stresses and strains of a normal family life. This atmospheric and absorbing human story, which stars that doyen of Welsh actors Philip Madoc along with Tom Butcher (The Bill, Doctors), Zoie Kennedy (The Royal) and Corrinne Wicks (Doctors), is a perfect Winter warmer. Calendar Girls Mon 16 – Sat 21 March Following a sell-out run and sensational reviews in October, Calendar Girls returns by popular demand. At first glance it should look like your classic WI calendar. Jams, cakes, sewing and all that. Except for one tiny thing… the ladies aren’t naked, they’re nude. A group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire WI, persuade one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference - no more photos of Wharfedale Bridges or Norman churches for them. Overcoming their initial reserve, the friends drop their dressing gowns, modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements. Puzzling their husbands, mortifying their children, and riding the wrath of the outraged WI, they spark a global phenomenon. But as media interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves exposed in ways they’d never expected, revealing more than they’d ever planned. A very British story with a very British heart, Calendar Girls is quirky, poignant and hilarious. Adapted by Tim Firth from his smash-hit Mirimax film of the same name, it is based an uplifting and very inspiring true story.

Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes

Fri 3 – Wed 8 April

Following 10 Days on Earth at Manchester’s Library Theatre, the critically acclaimed Ronnie Burkett, best known for his spellbinding original plays for adults, brings his latest creation to The Lowry. Credited with creating some of the world’s most elaborate and evocative puppetry, Ronnie appears on stage manipulating and providing the voice for each character. Billy Twinkle is a middle-aged cruise ship puppeteer who dazzles audiences with his Stars in Miniature marionette nightclub act. He is the best in the business and on top of the world, until he is fired. Standing at the edge of the ship contemplating a watery demise, Billy is called back to reality when his dead mentor appears as a hand puppet and forces him to re-enact his life as a puppet show in order to remember and rekindle the passions he once had. This requiem for a golden boy shines a little light on the wonder of youth meeting the wisdom of age with a kick in the pants to finish what we started. Suitable for ages 14+. A pair of drug dealers, who are also best mates, think they are untouchable because they have a crooked lawyer who isn’t averse to paying off witnesses. But the lawyer has become involved with one of their girlfriends. Pushed into the world of smuggling drugs and prostitution, she and the lawyer are seeking to stitch up the dealers in their next court trial and elope, but things never go according to plan…

In a timeless comedy of deception and desire, a woman dresses as a man in order to discover the true nature of her husband to be; is he driven by money or love? This dual language, strong visual interpretation of the 18th century French play is a co-production between Third Party and Bord Carte, companies noted for their audacious, fast-paced interpretations of classics.

Halfway

Feet

Thu 26 – Sat 28 March

Thu 2 – Sat 4 April

Halfway examines a young man's rite of passage, exploring sexuality, coming of age and the mortality of those closest to him.

Feet examines the darker aspects of urban life. Characters that are as engaging as they are intimidating fuse gang culture with the mundanity of middleclass existence. This new piece of writing by Mini Suharwardy explores morality, tolerance and justice in a surprisingly intriguing and provocative manner.

Performed by Phil Minns and Sarah Bacon, you are drawn into the naïve world of this teenager. Text and movement intertwine to create images of the young man’s thoughts, feelings, real moments, human contact and intimacy.

The Blank Album

Designer Body

Wed 11 March

Fri 13 & Sat 14 March

Choreographed by Natasha Gilmore, dubbed ‘the Catherine Tate of contemporary dance’, and with music composed by Quee MacArthur of cult Scottish band Shooglenifty, The Blank Album is live music, comedy and dance that literally rocks! An album of original and flamboyantly rock ’n’ roll songs is performed by dancers who not only play their instruments but dance with them, taking the imagery of air guitars to the next level and beyond. This dance theatre piece featuring guitars, fiddle, cello, percussion and voice is hysterical yet strikingly poetic.

A celebration of the body transformed. The piece celebrates the exceptional grace and strength of seven dancers as they balance, revolving on their own electrically powered turntables. Dressed in full-length garments that accentuate and distort the stature and elegance of their bodies, clothing slips away through the choreography until the couture designed body presented at the beginning of the performance evolves into a nude sculptural form – a completely different kind of designer body. A specially commissioned work by zoviet:france accompanies the dance work with a powerfully atmospheric score.

Chris McCausland

Sat 24 January

Sun 1 February

Be sure to catch Chris McCausland’s unique brand of award-winning stand-up in his Lowry debut! With no arty farty theme and no PowerPoint presentations, this promises to be a laughpacked show of random stand-up from the world’s only blind comedian.

Sun 18 January Not a comeback, just a quarter-century birthday celebration. 25 years ago, Dillie Keane formed Fascinating Aida and has tried to shake it off ever since. It keeps coming back to haunt her - and you. Now with new songs and playing to an even older audience than before! Shuffle to get a ticket, grumble at the steepness of the stairs, thrill to the beauty of the harmonies, marvel at the rhymes and laugh in the certainty that your pacemaker will look after your heart.

A regular on Radio 4’s Loose Ends and a frequent guest on The Now Show, Nevermind the Buzzcocks, The Comedy Store and Mock the Week. Robin Ince presents his brand new stand-up show. He mixes up stories of childbirth, astronomy, evolutionary conundrums, a to-do with Vanessa Feltz and a crazed preacher, plus readings from his new favourite charity shop finds. Will anything top the bizarre blouse removal advice of The Secrets of Picking Up Sexy Girls?

The multi-award-winning Welsh misery returns with his hilarious if.comedy nominated show. This year, he’s decided to abandon his fictional tales of Llanbobl and try living in the real world. In a service station, at about 2.40am, Rhod aggressively demands to know more about the 'Award-Winning Mince Pie' on display. Suddenly aware of what he is doing, he is forced to acknowledge that he may be having a very mild nervous breakdown. This is the slightly ridiculous story of how one mince pie broke the camel’s back.

Star of Live at the Apollo, Royal Variety Show and a firm favourite at the Edinburgh Festival, the inimitable Stephen K Amos returns to The Lowry with his brand new show. Choosing an audience member at random to record the number of laughs and rounds of applause, with the total announced at the end of the show, Stephen extracts humour from his race and upbringing; ever willing to tell a story from his childhood and emphasise how today’s youth have it so much better.

Fresh from the continued success of his BBC Radio 4 comedy series, Count Arthur Strong, showbiz legend and raconteur, reminds us just what we've been missing since his last television series, The Robin Hood Club, was axed in 1960 something.

The star of Phoenix Nights and Key103 returns with a brand new show. In the age of Facebook and Myspace, Justin has decided he doesn’t want any new friends. He’s got enough. In fact, he needs to drop a few. His Nana once said you are blessed if you can count your friends on the fingers of one hand, so join Justin as he explores his address book and begins to purge. Who goes, who stays…he decides.

Direct from Hollywood, Totally Looped is Mock the Week meets YouTube, a hilarious all-improvised show in which top comics dub new dialogue to old movie clips, creating a spontaneous festival of The Funniest Movies Never Made! Guest stars Hattie Hayridge (Red Dwarf), Manchesterbased Toby Hadoke (Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf, The Lowry 2007) and 2008 if.comedy nominee Pippa Evans join a team of top improvisers for a unique evening of entertainment. QUAYS THEATRE TIMES 8PM TICKETS £14 & £16 CONCESSIONS £2 OFF

2007 if.comedy Best Newcomer Award nominee and winner of Chortle Breakthrough Act Award 2008, Jon has been described as ‘a junior version of Victor Meldrew, only wittier and more northern’ (The Scotsman). Dogmatic is a word that Jon found in the dictionary to define his character ‘a person that asserts opinion, who cannot be swayed by rational argument’… and Jon likes to argue! Jon has supported Alan Carr on his national tour and can be heard as co-host of the BBC 6music’s Russell Howard Show.

Back by popular demand with his new show filled with hilarious anecdotes and observations. A regular on TV and radio, Phil is widely regarded as a rising star of the comedy circuit and one to watch. Having travelled all over the world and seen many funny things, leading to the realisation that stupidity is funny, Phil takes a long look at the stupidity of the world when compared with his own. This show is a study of what it takes to make a truly bad idea.

Keith James & Rick Foot – The Songs of Nick Drake

Sun 18 January

Sun 18 January

Displaying his trademark humour in the selection of songs, Thompson takes you on a journey from the ballads of the Middle Ages to more modern songs by artists such as Nat King Cole, Nelly Furtado, Gilbert and Sullivan and The Who. Treating each song as if it were his own, Thompson’s uncanny genius is evident in his astonishing guitar technique that sees him juggling simultaneous lead, rhythm and bass parts on the same six strings. With accompaniment from Judith Owen and Debra Dobkin.

Nick Drake will always be seen as a landmark of creativity. A complex and melancholy character, he released only three LPs in his lifetime. His music has since found a new audience in later generations. Keith James’ voice and acoustic guitar are complemented by Rick Foot’s inventive double bass parts, not in imitation but in appreciation of his exceptional, timeless music. Includes the screening of a new documentary about Nick’s life and music, featuring Ashley Hutchings, Katherine Williams, John Renbourn and Ralph McTell.

Jonatha Brooke – The Undiscovered Songs of Woody Guthrie

Elaine Paige Sun 1 & Mon 2 March

Björn Again 20th Anniversary

John Renbourn & Robin Williamson

Thu 12 March

Sun 5 April

John Renbourn is one of the most influential songwriters and guitarists of our time, who alongside Bert Jansch, formed the hugely influential Pentangle in the late 60s and almost single-handedly transformed traditional music in this country. Robin Wiliamson is a Scottish multi-instrumentalist with a similarly distinguished pedigree – a founder member of The Incredible String Band. Now touring as a duo to present a relaxed evening of good humour, exceptional musicianship and exhilarating music from two genuine legends.

Sun 1 March Drawing on blues, rock, funk and jazz influences, Preston’s vast range of explosively original music will forever change your expectations of a guitarist. First-time listeners find it impossible to believe that they're hearing just the one musician, in real time. While never letting his extraordinary technique overshadow the beauty of his music, at full tilt, his fingers, thumbs, fists and hands suggest a drummer, keyboardist, bassist and several guitarists at work. The phrase ‘has to be seen to be believed’ has never been more true!

Critically acclaimed American singer-songwriter and guitarist Jonatha Brooke is one of a select group of artists to be given access to the thousands of previously unheard lyrics written by Woody Guthrie, legend of American folk blues. Jonatha has set Guthrie's lyrics to new, contemporary music, and the results are revelatory: powerful, evocative songs that capture Guthrie's beautiful, panoramic lyricism and bring it into the 21st century. The result is The Works and this is your chance to experience something magical

Elaine Paige, as an actress, recording artist and producer, has made a major contribution to the modern musical which ensures her own chapter in the entertainment world and justifies the title The First Lady of British Musical Theatre. In this special 40th Anniversary celebration she takes a journey through her remarkable career since 1968. Revisiting her awardwinning roles, she recaptures her performances in the shows she made famous including Evita, Cats, Chess, Piaf and Sunset Boulevard.

Following the huge cinematic hit of Mamma Mia! this Summer, experience the magic of ABBA once more by joining us to celebrate Björn Again’s 20th Anniversary! So put on your dancing shoes and head to The Lowry as Björn Again perform the greatest hits of ABBA with songs like Fernando, SOS, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and Waterloo.

Show of Hands Sun 19 April

Voted Best Live Act by the general public in the 2004 Radio 2 Folk Awards and with fans such as Peter Gabriel, Johnnie Walker and Bob Harris, Show of Hands are dubbed one of England’s most successful acoustic bands. Following their phenomenal sell-out performance in 2006, Show of Hands, along with special guest Miranda Sykes, return to The Lowry for another evening of great music.

An Evening with Pam Ayres

Karen Darke If You Fall

Tony Benn & Roy Bailey

Sun 22 February

Wed 25 February

Sun 8 March

Pam Ayres returns to The Lowry with her current show, which includes material from her bestselling books, Surgically Enhanced, With These Hands and The Works, along with some new poems and stories. Her books regularly appear in The Sunday Times bestseller charts and many of her poems feature in school textbooks around the world. She’s a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio 4 in Just A Minute, That Reminds Me, and in her own series Ayres On The Air and Potting On.

Karen Darke is an extraordinary adventurer. Four years after being paralysed from the chest down in a rock climbing accident, Karen set out on a hand bike to cross the Tien Shan and Karakoram mountains of Central Asia. This was to be the first of many adventures which included her hand cycling the length of the Japanese archipelago and the Indian Himalaya, sea kayaking the Canada–Alaska coastline and making a recordbreaking 600km crossing of the Greenland ice cap.

Following its sell-out success in 2006, The Writing On The Wall - An Anthology of Dissent In Words and Music returns to The Lowry. This witty, perceptive and thoughtprovoking two-man show of songs and stories features popular folk singer Roy Bailey and retired MP, Tony Benn, one of the most colourful public figures of the past fifty years. Tony tells of public resistance to the political will dating back to the earliest days of British democracy, while Roy punctuates the show with musical illustrations.

Derren Brown Wed 29 April – Sat 2 May

Following the sell-out successes of his previous visits, Derren Brown returns to The Lowry. On stage as well as on TV Derren Brown is in a class of his own, exhilarating audiences with his unique brand of intelligent and theatrical entertainment. His pioneering blend of psychology, illusion and showmanship makes for a stunning and dramatic evening in the hands of a master performer. Discounts and concessions

Parking There is a passenger drop-off point immediately in front of The Lowry. Secure parking is available in the Lowry Outlet Mall car park, which also has designated areas for disabled people on each level. We recommend that Blue Badge holders enter the car park at the entrance near the mini roundabout on the road leading from The Quays as this will allow parking on the ground floor level. For more information on disabled parking please contact the Lowry Outlet Mall Customer Relations Desk on 0161 848 1850. To reduce your waiting time at the end of the evening we strongly recommend that you pre-pay for your parking at a cost of £4 (valid between 5pm and 1am). Simply take your ticket to the car park office when you enter the car park - located in the basement car park by the Marks and Spencer escalator. Receivers for our Sennheiser infra-red facility are available from the Information Desk. Please advise Box Office of your requirements when booking theatre tickets.

Guide dogs are welcome.

Toilet facilities available on all levels.

ACCESSIBLE PRINT This brochure is available in audio format, please ask Box Office for a copy.

The Lowry offers discounts to the following people: under 16s, students in full-time education, disabled people, 60+ in full-time retirement, job seekers and participants of the New Deal. When child tickets are listed separately, no extra concessions apply. These discounts are subject to availability and may vary according to the visiting producer and the show.
