Fancy creating something new and original? Sign up to Ad Hoc Dance, our in-house contemporary dance company, then showcase the final piece in our Studio theatre. And, for the more experienced, we have ProActive Tuesday, a dance workshop that allows dance teachers and professionals to hone their techniques. Drama enthusiasts can get back to basics with Voice Works – Voice into Speech, a course focused on breathing to help you speak with power, clarity and confidence. If you’re looking to develop and extend your acting skills try An Actor’s Craft – The Plays of Anton Chekhov or sharpen your improvisation skills with Playback Theatre and transform stories into theatre! Pop-up - Around the World

A pop-up is a flat, folded piece of paper, which magically turns into a three-dimensional picture when opened.

Leading photographer Jem Southam has been re-tracing Lowry’s footsteps along the Cumbrian coastline. Though Lowry is more commonly associated with Salford, he spent a great deal of time observing and recording industrial landscapes and harbour towns in this area.

This exhibition takes you on a tour through the magical world of popup. Travel to some of the great cities in the world and see how famous buildings and landmarks have proved a popular subject for pop-ups – even The Lowry! Along the way you will find out how pop-ups are made and you can even have a go at making one for yourself.

Southam’s journey has resulted in a remarkable series of images that focus on the remnants of Cumbria’s long and significant industrial past.

A Long Exposure - 100 Years of Pictures from Guardian Photographers in Manchester

Ends Sun 1 March Looking at the influential work of seven photographers who worked for The Guardian newspaper in Manchester, this exhibition presents a fascinating selection of photographs taken between 1908 and the present day. The photographs on display cover a wide range of subjects and places, from the pioneering days of flight to the miners’ strike, from Moss Side to Calcutta.

Transformations 2 Opens April Transformations is a series of commissions in which artists respond to the unique architecture of our Promenade Gallery. Submission is open to UK-based artists who are keen to explore new approaches to their work. Supported by

At times soaring and tender, at others heart-rending, Puccini’s Tosca is one of the world’s most popular operas.

The event of the season, this world première represents a meeting of major talents. Composer David Sawer, whose opera From Morning to Midnight was a great success for English National Opera in 2001, has created a new satirical operetta with writer and broadcaster Armando Iannucci. Set in the clinic of cosmetic surgery genius Doktor Needlemeier, whose slogan is ‘Putting Right what Nature Got Wrong’, Skin Deep is a darkly brilliant, up-to-theminute satire on a world where staying young and beautiful is all that matters, whatever the cost.

Get swept up in the glitz and glamour of 1930s politics, in two starspangled Broadway treats.

Its been four years since John P Wintergreen became President and his re-election campaign is in full swing. This time, however, people aren’t falling for his smooth slogans. The political situation spirals out of control, and before you know it the US faces a revolutionary dictatorship of blue shirts!

In this Pulitzer Prizewinning musical, Wintergreen’s chance of winning the Presidential election looks slim until he runs a campaign on the thing everyone wants – love. He stages a beauty pageant where first prize is his hand in marriage. French belle Diana Devereaux wins, but when the President falls for muffin-making Mary instead, Diana turns her rejection into an international scandal. Wintergreen needs a new idea to save the day, and maybe Mary can produce the answer…

Corrupt police chief Scarpia is obsessed with Tosca, the lover of artist Cavaradossi, and he is willing to go to any length to have her. Mon 2 – Sat 7 February Following the tremendous success of previous visits, Private Peaceful returns to The Lowry.

Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line. This remarkable book, winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year award, is by third Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo. The inspiration for Private Peaceful came from Morpurgo’s visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.

Following 10 Days on Earth at Manchester’s Library Theatre, the critically acclaimed Ronnie Burkett, best known for his spellbinding original plays for adults, brings his latest creation to The Lowry. Credited with creating some of the world’s most elaborate and evocative puppetry, Ronnie appears on stage manipulating and providing the voice for each character. Billy Twinkle is a middle-aged cruise ship puppeteer who dazzles audiences with his Stars in Miniature marionette nightclub act. He is the best in the business and on top of the world, until he is fired. Standing at the edge of the ship contemplating a watery demise, Billy is called back to reality when his dead mentor appears as a hand puppet and forces him to re-enact his life as a puppet show in order to remember and rekindle the passions he once had. This requiem for a golden boy shines a little light on the wonder of youth meeting the wisdom of age with a kick in the pants to finish what we started. Suitable for ages 14+. Lyra and Will embark on a thrilling journey through worlds familiar and unknown. Their great quest demands a savage struggle against the most dangerous of enemies. Along the way they encounter fantastical creatures in parallel worlds, including rebellious angels, soul-eating spectres, child-catching gobblers and the armoured bears and witch-clans of the Arctic. Ian McDiarmid returns to The Lowry having appeared in the Donmar Warehouse’s production of Pirandello’s Henry IV (Manchester Evening News Award for Best performance in a Visiting Production). Presented in the round, six superb dancers present the work of three internationally renowned choreographers. Container, a piece created in angular patterns by one of Europe’s most inventive choreographers, Rui Horta, opens this brand new show. In contrast, Magnification by Australian Dance Theatre’s Garry Stewart puts the inner workings of the body under the magnifying glass. A solo piece by the UK’s Charlotte Vincent, renowned for her emotionally bold choreography, completes the evening.

Choreographed by Natasha Gilmore, dubbed ‘the Catherine Tate of contemporary dance’, and with music composed by Quee MacArthur of cult Scottish band Shooglenifty, The Blank Album is live music, comedy and dance that literally rocks! An album of original and flamboyantly rock ’n’ roll songs is performed by dancers who not only play their instruments but dance with them, taking the imagery of air guitars to the next level and beyond. This dance theatre piece featuring guitars, fiddle, cello, percussion and voice is hysterical yet strikingly poetic.

A celebration of the body transformed. The piece celebrates the exceptional grace and strength of seven dancers as they balance, revolving on their own electrically powered turntables. Dressed in full-length garments that accentuate and distort the stature and elegance of their bodies, clothing slips away through the choreography until the couture designed body presented at the beginning of the performance evolves into a nude sculptural form – a completely different kind of designer body. A specially commissioned work by zoviet:france accompanies the dance work with a powerfully atmospheric score.

John Renbourn is one of the most influential songwriters and guitarists of our time, who alongside Bert Jansch, formed the hugely influential Pentangle in the late 60s and almost single-handedly transformed traditional music in this country. Robin Wiliamson is a Scottish multi-instrumentalist with a similarly distinguished pedigree – a founder member of The Incredible String Band. Now touring as a duo to present a relaxed evening of good humour, exceptional musicianship and exhilarating music from two genuine legends.

Pam Ayres returns to The Lowry with her current show, which includes material from her bestselling books, Surgically Enhanced, With These Hands and The Works, along with some new poems and stories. Her books regularly appear in The Sunday Times bestseller charts and many of her poems feature in school textbooks around the world. She’s a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio 4 in Just A Minute, That Reminds Me, and in her own series Ayres On The Air and Potting On.

Karen Darke is an extraordinary adventurer. Four years after being paralysed from the chest down in a rock climbing accident, Karen set out on a hand bike to cross the Tien Shan and Karakoram mountains of Central Asia. This was to be the first of many adventures which included her hand cycling the length of the Japanese archipelago and the Indian Himalaya, sea kayaking the Canada–Alaska coastline and making a recordbreaking 600km crossing of the Greenland ice cap.

Following its sell-out success in 2006, The Writing On The Wall - An Anthology of Dissent In Words and Music returns to The Lowry. This witty, perceptive and thoughtprovoking two-man show of songs and stories features popular folk singer Roy Bailey and retired MP, Tony Benn, one of the most colourful public figures of the past fifty years. Parking There is a passenger drop-off point immediately in front of The Lowry. Secure parking is available in the Lowry Outlet Mall car park, which also has designated areas for disabled people on each level. We recommend that Blue Badge holders enter the car park at the entrance near the mini roundabout on the road leading from The Quays as this will allow parking on the ground floor level. For more information on disabled parking please contact the Lowry Outlet Mall Customer Relations Desk on 0161 848 1850. To reduce your waiting time at the end of the evening we strongly recommend that you pre-pay for your parking at a cost of £4 (valid between 5pm and 1am). Simply take your ticket to the car park office when you enter the car park - located in the basement car park by the Marks and Spencer escalator. Receivers for our Sennheiser infra-red facility are available from the Information Desk. Please advise Box Office of your requirements when booking theatre tickets.
