The Sea: LS Lowry and Maggi Hambling Sat 17 October 2009 – Sun 31 January 2010

“The surprise of Lowry’s sea-paintings is that they are usually unpeopled. He achieves a stark clarity that speaks directly to us. He can create the undercurrents as if by magic, with great economy of mark and minimal gesture. The results are hypnotic and contemporary.”

Maggi Hambling, one of Britain’s most distinguished contemporary artists, shows her latest and extremely powerful images of the North Sea. These works are shown for the first time alongside LS Lowry’s own deceptively calm seascapes.

Così fan tutte

Werther

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Tue 10 & Fri 13 November

Jules Massenet Wed 11 & Sat 14 November New Production

Così fan tutte is one of Mozart’s most remarkable creations. It all starts with a casual bet that the fiancées of two young men won’t stay faithful for a minute if put to the test. It sounds harmless enough, but cruelty is inherent in this game and there are darker forces at work. This story of trust and deception, loyalty and desire, resonates as strongly today as ever, and the score contains some of Mozart’s most dazzlingly beautiful music.

Massenet makes a simple story of impossible love intensely touching through gorgeous melodies, rich orchestration and a sure dramatic instinct.

Conductor Andrew Parrott. Director Tim Albery.

Paul Nilon is Werther, a man helplessly in love with a woman already promised in marriage to someone else. In the role of Charlotte, the object of his passion, is Alice Coote, one of the world’s greatest mezzo-sopranos. Opera North’s Music Director Richard Farnes conducts a new production of one of the supreme achivements of French romantic opera.

Sung in English.

‘Aesthetically ravishing.’ The Guardian

Conductor Richard Farnes. Director Tom Cairns. Sung in French with English titles.

The Adventures of Mr Broucˇek Leoš Janácˇek Thu 12 November New Production This vibrantly original opera follows the fantastical adventures of Mr Brouček as he travels to worlds far beyond his imagination. On the moon he encounters strange, artistic creatures, after which he is whisked back in time to a 15th century Czech battle. Our hero is rather like an operatic Mr Benn, although his adventures start and end in a beer barrel. Janáček’s glorious music paints vivid pictures of Mr Brouček’s travels, conjuring extra-terrestrial sounds, Puccini-like romantic duets, and the stirring patriotism of battle songs. The Watermill Theatre

Hot Mikado Tue 6 – Sat 10 October If you like your musicals fast-moving, funny and full of memorable music, this is likely to be the most energetic and exhilarating production you’ll see anywhere this year. Strictly Come Dancing judge, Craig Revel Horwood and Tony Award-winning orchestrator Sarah Travis’ electrifying show had toes tapping, fingers clicking and enjoyed nightly standing ovations at the renowned Watermill Theatre, where it ran in 2006. The original catchy G&S score is given a contemproary feel with swing, jive and sassy songs plus a little gospel and rhythm and blues thrown in for good measure. Picture a little town in Japan where flirting is punishable by death. Unsurprisingly its citizens are finding the law rather tiresome. They appoint Ko Ko, a lowly tailor, as Lord High Executioner, himself condemned for flirting and so not likely to execute anyone. Throw in the beautiful Yum Yum, her ardent admirer Nanki-Poo, errant son of the Mikado, and the man-eater Katisha, and you have one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous comic operas in all its wonderful absurdity.

Druid Ireland

The Walworth Farce Tue 15 – Sat 19 September ‘What are we if we are not our stories?’ Hilarious, horrifying and ferociously entertaining - an achingly tender insight into what happens when we become stuck in the stories we tell ourselves about our lives. It’s 11 o’clock in the morning in a council flat on the Walworth Road in London. In two hours’ time, as is normal, three Irish men will have consumed six cans of Harp, fifteen crackers with spreadable cheese, ten pink biscuit wafers and one oven-cooked chicken with a strange blue sauce. In two hours’ time, as is normal, five people will have been killed. From Galway to Edinburgh, from London to New York, The Walworth Farce has wowed audiences everywhere. Currently on an extensive world tour, Druid returns to The Lowry (The Cripple of Inishmaan, 2008 & The Playboy of the Western World, 2009) with this remarkable and compelling play by Enda Walsh. Deep Cut Tue 22 – Sat 26 September “Passing Out. Fantastic. Best day. Nothing’s ever come close. All your mates around you and you’re looking forward to your next step and our next step was Deepcut.” 18-year-old Private Cheryl James from Llangollen was one of four young soldiers who died from gunshot wounds at Deepcut Barracks between 1995 and 2002. Cheryl’s parents wanted answers from the people responsible for their daughter’s care. But how do you begin to grieve when no one seems to have a proper explanation? What would give you the determination to continue asking awkward, demanding questions? Deep Cut explores the way in which governments can stop ordinary people from finding the truth. Taken from original source material and powerful first hand testimonies, the multi-award-winning Deep Cut is a bold and compelling account of one family’s journey through a time they thought they’d never experience, to places they hoped they’d never be.

The Pitmen Painters Tue 27 – Sat 31 October Best New Play – Evening Standard Awards. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Following sell-out successes at Live Theatre Newcastle and the National Theatre, the smash hit production comes to The Lowry. This new play by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Cooking with Elvis) is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

Felicity Kendal stars in

Mrs Warren’s Profession Mon 2 – Sat 7 November Starring the much-loved stage and television actress Felicity Kendal and David Yelland (Rumpole of the Bailey, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby). What is Mrs Warren’s profession? Her daughter, Vivie, has never really known much about her mother. A prim young woman, she has enjoyed a comfortable upbringing, a Cambridge education, a generous monthly allowance and now has ambitions to go into Law. Is it conceivable that all this privilege and respectability has been financed from the proceeds of the oldest profession? How will Vivie react when she finds out the awful truth about her mother’s ill-gotten gains? Shaw’s ultimate test of a mother-daughter relationship is one of his most witty and provocative plays. Written in 1894 but banned from performance until the racy 1920s, Mrs Warren’s Profession lays bare the rampant hypocrisy of Victorian society and its constrained morals.

Days of Significance Tue 24 – Sat 28 November The RSC return with a critically acclaimed and blisteringly topical play by Roy Williams, one of the UK’s most exciting playwrights. Before they depart for active service, two young soldiers make the most of a drunken night out with friends in an English market town. Their bravado is soon crushed by their tour of duty and the civilian life they return to is now as alien to them as the desert they left behind. Recently reworked to acknowledge the shifting mood of a country now witnessing the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, this timely and explosive play examines the aftermath of a war whose conflicts rage far beyond the battleground. Written by award-winning playwright Roy Williams, whose recent work includes Angel Face and Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads (National Theatre, London), Days of Significance is directed by Maria Aberg, whose other credits include State of Emergency (Gate Theatre, London), Crime and Punishment (National Theatre) and Alaska (Royal Court, London). Contains strong language, violence and some scenes of an adult nature.

F**king Men

The Vagina Monologues

Thu 27 – Sat 29 August

Thu 5 – Sat 7 November

This free-wheeling comedy of sexual manners is London’s biggest fringe success of recent years.

Based on author Eve Ensler’s ‘Vagina Interviews’ conducted with women from all around the world, this hilariously witty and moving collection of tales gives voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, brave and thoroughly human stories.

Taking its lead from Schnitzler’s La Ronde, F**king Men is a portrait of ten men searching for love, sex and intimacy in modern day America. This insightful drama looks at a succession of male couples and strangers, as they negotiate the before and after of lust, love and betrayal and the pursuit of sex. Some stories are poignant, some hilarious, but collectively they provide a fascinating snap shot of the modern-day male.

As sharp as Sex and the City and as unmissable as Friends - bring your mum, your best friend, your sister or even your granny - this is the ultimate girls’ night out! Star cast to be announced soon!

Little Tin Rock God

Forgotten Things

The Horrific Case of Mr Valdemar

Thu 24 – Sat 26 September

Thu 8 & Fri 9 October

Thu 15 – Sat 17 October

Sun 18 October

Will's girlfriend has left him.

This dark adult comedy written by Frank Marcus and directed by Wyllie Longmore follows actress June Buckridge as she discovers that Sister George, the much-loved character she plays in the popular radio soap opera Applehurst, is about to be killed off. Already volatile and difficult to work with, June’s behaviour becomes increasingly paranoid to the consternation of her live-in companion, Childie, and her employer, Mrs Croft. First seen in London’s West End in 1965 and later filmed under the same title, The Killing of Sister George still packs a powerful satiric punch.

Johnny Hick’s records are topping the charts, his tour is selling out and his music is loved by millions; he can do no wrong. Or so he thinks…

16-year-old Toby believes he's a failure. He's losing the will to live and his parents are frightened. Then there's Grandma Lilly she's just losing her mind. Having forgotten 'something important' Lilly interrupts Toby to lead him into a mystery of half memories and family secrets. Finding answers might just save both their lives. This dark comic play by Emma Adams is designed for crossgenerational audiences, fusing puppetry and surreal style.

Take a trip beyond the grave with this macabre, mesmerising tale of sex, money, death and hypnotism from Edgar Allen Poe, the master of the modern horror story.

Using his newfound grasp of time travel, he attempts to make his memories of a romantic past a constant present. A new romantic comedy exploring love, loss, and how to explain the physics of time travel to someone who really couldn’t care less. From the writer/director of Daisies which was nominated for five Studio Salford Awards in 2008, and Nettles which enjoyed a sellout run at Contact Theatre last year.

The arrival of a mysterious businessman brings with it the revelation that Johnny's star is fading. Faced with the prospect that the love of his fans has waned, the panic sets in; but a solution may be at hand. Does the smooth-talking stranger hold the answer to Johnny's prayers; and if so, at what cost?

Suitable for ages 14+.

A stage hypnotist is intrigued to know whether the effects of his art can be experienced beyond the grave. When he meets Mr Valdemar, a man with only a short while to live, he imagines he’s found the perfect guinea pig. But when sex and money intervene, the results are predictably and deliciously horrific!

Stranded in Mid-West America, two road companions make their inevitable farewells as the sounds of a distant age drift listlessly into the evening sky. Tracing an epic journey drawn across Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and Norman Miller’s The Executioner’s Song, this beautiful, evocative, epic yet intimate visual theatre, incorporates live and recorded soundscapes, video projection and theatre performance to create a charming search for a place in life that we would like to call home.

This sketchbook of tales, bursting with life, is a raw and playful search of the soul experimenting with chaos and synchronisation.

Time Out's new talent 2008 Michael Twaits brings his latest show – a theatrical cabaret for the Heat generation. This multimedia adventure through the cult of celebrity leaves the fame game stripped bare, taking you on a dark excursion into the fascination and fixation with fame.

Join us for an evening of chilling ghost stories by Charles Dickens and M. R. James, adapted by Simon Corble and introduced by the intrepid Victorian psychic investigator, Montagu Furzan.

Officially 60,000 Polish people have come to Britain to seek work since 2004. Two British lads, Dan and Mark, reversed the trend to get work in Warsaw; this is their story.

Obstacles to Coming Home Thu 22 & Fri 23 October

Using the stories of others to express herself, Alice sees fictional characters as extensions of herself. But what happens when her dreams become too vivid and her waking hours become ruled by memories of the night? Has she gone too far into her world of fiction and make-believe?

Adoration. Idolisation. Impersonation. When do you cross the line from fan to fanatic? And when does the art end and the private life begin?

A curious traveller encounters a lonely, isolated worker in a dark and dismal railway cutting. The man appears strangely troubled; is it his isolation and the tedium of his job that is playing with his mind? Or is there a presence haunting the gloom around the danger light and the black mouth of that oppressive and forbidding tunnel?

This unique comedy by Mark Whiteley and Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, is about a 2000-mile adventure from the UK to Poland and follows the journey thousands of Polish people have made over the last 70 years. This is the story of two nations who have fought together, worked together and now live together, and what it means to be an immigrant. Supported by Arts Council, England.

Following sell-out shows in 2008, Nunkie Theatre Company return with a critically acclaimed, atmospheric retelling of two of the earliest and greatest tales by M. R. James, the master of the English ghost story.

Christina and Augustus are the unearthly proprietors of an absurd gothic eatery. They guide the audience through the macabre tale of a business mogul and his fateful quest for an heir; serving up his just deserts.

In Canon Alberic’s Scrap-book, a young Cambridge antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town in the French Pyrenees. In The Mezzotint a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator in Oxford.

An original devising by Hocus Pocus Theatre company, Nightmare Café is a theatrical feast of dark comedy, grotesque burlesque, vaudeville, music, song and dance.

Manchester's hugely successful monthly cabaret night, Burlesque!, comes to the plush red velvet settings of the Quays Theatre. Hosted by Lesbian Vampire Queen Rosie Lugosi, the show features special guests Frisky and Mannish performing their twisted reworkings of classic pop songs, the slightly crazy Crimson Sky, mesmerising dance from Vicky Butterfly, aerial hi-jinks from Chrisalys and much more. Wed 21 – Sat 24 October Freely adapted from Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece

Matthew Bourne’s latest creation comes to The Lowry after sellout success in London and Edinburgh. Oscar Wilde’s gothic fable becomes a darkly seductive dance theatre event from master storyteller Matthew Bourne. Set in the image-obsessed world of contemporary art and politics, this black fairy tale tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young man who makes a pact with the devil. Amongst London’s beautiful people, Dorian Gray is the ‘It Boy’ an icon of beauty and truth in an increasingly ugly world. The destructive power of beauty, the blind pursuit of pleasure and the darkness and corruption that lie beneath the charming façade, the themes behind Wilde’s cautionary tale, have never been more timely.

Dorian Gray follows the phenomenal success of New Adventures’ productions of Matthew Bourne’s work, all of which have appeared at The Lowry, including Edward Scissorhands, The Car Man, Nutcracker! and the legendary Swan Lake.

Sat 21 November A street dance version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The classic story of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is injected with a large dose of Hip Hop energy by Bounce. This exciting company is known for creating high energy, imaginative street-dance theatre, enjoying hit runs at both Sadler’s Wells and the Roundhouse. In the confines of a psychiatric hospital, breakdance becomes a way of expressing freedom and rebelling against the iron rule of Nurse Ratched, who happens to be a ballet fan. Based on the play by Dale Wasserman and the novel by Ken Kesey, the show features a fantastic soundtrack including hits from Missy Elliot, Dizzie Rascal, Gotan Project, David Holmes and Cypress Hill. Inventive set design, bungee-jumping breakdancers, film and choreography combine to produce a fastpaced show that is at times funny, at times moving, and always packed to the rafters with high-octane dance moves. Wed 30 September

Tue 8 December

Tue 3 November Rites, a male duet performed/created by Missen and Turner is powerful and poignant in its exploration of the events and experiences that shape us as friends, brothers, fathers and sons. Before night fell, choreographed by Beth Cassani uses games and physical risk to cast a female perspective on the duo's friendship. Stride, a young men’s dance project developed by Chameleon and Dance Initiative Greater Manchester will culminate in a performance in the public areas of the building at 6.30pm.

As soon as we leave our homes, we are told what to do and more often what not to do. But these instructions are not only physical; they have emotional resonances which go beyond the literal commands. In his first work for his own company since his appointment as Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company, Rafael Bonachela explores this duality and how it affects us. He has collaborated with contemporary composer Ezio Bosso and designer Alan Macdonald to develop the work.

Ockham’s Razor, the critically acclaimed aerial theatre company, return with their new show. Experience the sweat, grind and grit as performers power a wheel of wood and steel suspended six metres in the air. A seemingly small decision or action can gather momentum and impetus beyond their control, snowballing until they find themselves running like mad to power the treadmill whilst someone else rides it like a ferris wheel. Directed by Toby Sedgwick (Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer for War Horse). Ockham’s Razor are funded by Arts Council England.

A co-promotion by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester and The Lowry. Supported by the University of Salford and Arts Council England North West.

Discounts and concessions

Parking There is a passenger drop-off point immediately in front of The Lowry. Secure parking is available in the Lowry Outlet Mall car park, which also has designated areas for disabled people on each level. We recommend that Blue Badge holders enter the car park at the entrance near the mini roundabout on the road leading from The Quays as this will allow parking on the ground floor level. For more information on disabled parking please contact the Lowry Outlet Mall Customer Relations Desk on 0161 848 1850. To reduce your waiting time at the end of the evening we strongly recommend that you pre-pay for your parking at a cost of £4 (valid between 5pm and 1am). Simply take your ticket to the car park office when you enter the car park - located in the basement car park by the Marks and Spencer escalator. Receivers for our Sennheiser infra-red facility are available from the Information Desk. Please advise Box Office of your requirements when booking theatre tickets.

Guide dogs are welcome.

Toilet facilities available on all levels.

ACCESSIBLE PRINT This brochure is available in audio format, please ask Box Office for a copy.

The Lowry offers discounts to the following people: under 16s, students in full-time education, disabled people, 60+ in full-time retirement, job seekers and participants of the New Deal. When child tickets are listed separately, no extra concessions apply. These discounts are subject to availability and may vary according to the visiting producer and the show.

Concession prices are shown where they apply.
