The Abduction from the Seraglio Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Tue 2 & Fri 5 June Belmonte and Pedrillo are out to rescue their imprisoned lovers from the clutches of the Pasha Selim. But can these Westerners caught out East outwit their captors, sort out their feelings for each other and learn to see the world through other eyes? Mozart adds a dash of Turkish spice to this alluring opera. The music is full of drama, beauty and youthful energy – as well as some spectacular vocal fireworks. This contemporary production explores the comic tensions and misunderstandings that can arise when one culture collides with another. Conductor Rory Macdonald. Director Tim Hopkins. Sung in English.

Giuseppe Verdi Wed 3 & Sat 6 June

Don Carlos is Verdi’s most ambitious work and a towering masterpiece. Set in France and Spain in the 16th century, it demonstrates how love, loyalty and friendship are liable to be crushed by the harsh imperatives of political power. Verdi’s overwhelming score is rich in colour and emotionally compelling, combining grandeur with intimacy. Opera North’s visually sumptuous production is itself a classic.
This blockbusting musical comedy features a colourful collection of characters and their search for a dream home in 1950s Moscow. With a score which veers from wildly tuneful dance music to lyrical ballads and all points in between, it’s a big, bold satire, full of energy and wicked humour.
Conductor Richard Farnes. Director Tim Albery.

A Propeller production by The Watermill Theatre in association with the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse
The Merchant of Venice & A Midsummer Night’s Dream By William Shakespeare.
Tue 9 – Sat 13 June Propeller, the internationally celebrated, innovative Shakespearean company, return to The Lowry with two of Shakespeare's greatest and most contrasting masterpieces. Funny, provocative and exhilarating… The Merchant of Venice 'Do all men kill the things they love?' 'Hates any man the thing he would not kill?' Propeller present a new staging of one of Shakespeare’s most original and eloquent works. Can the law ever understand the difference between justice and cruelty? This bitingly modern play excites the deepest of arguments and reveals the virtue in vice and vice in virtue. A Midsummer Night’s Dream 'It seems to me that yet we sleep, we dream...' Propeller revive their multi-award-winning production which played to packed houses all over the world in 2003. Fresh, funny and beautifully lyrical, A Midsummer Night's Dream will touch every theatregoer.

Mon 22 – Sat 27 June Starring Louise Jameson (Rosa di Marco, Eastenders) and Janet Dibley (Deborah Johnson, The Chase). Best friends Vera and Anna have a few things in common – being the 'wrong' side of 40, husband troubles and a love of Irish singing sensation Daniel O’Donnell to name but a few. During a trip to Donegal to see their idol in concert, Vera and Anna come face to face with the realities of their lives – loveless marriages, husbands in the clutches of mid-life crises, the menopause (or should that be ‘mental pause’) and the prospect of being thrown on the sexual scrap heap. Assisted by a handsome young waiter (it helps that he looks like Daniel O’Donnell), Vera and Anna confront their fears and begin to realise that life doesn't have to end when HRT begins. Brought to you by Marie Jones, writer of Stones in his Pockets (The Lowry, April 2009), this hilarious, feisty and sometimes painful look into the lives of two women on the verge.

Harry is struggling to come to terms with a tragedy that nobody believes has taken place. He calculates that the past can be manipulated and the future predicted, but can he prove everyone wrong by changing the order of events that led to the disappearance of everything he loved? Combining film, animation and live action on a two-storey set, this gothic tale of obsessive desire explores how meddling with the past can have tragic consequences and how the search for origins can lead to the mind’s disintegration.

Sat 23 & Sun 24 May New teacher Ms Lawson believes Jamie is being bullied becuase he’s gay. She wants to help, and when the Deputy Head tells her it will sort itself out, Ms Lawson starts to become suspicious...A gripping and powerful new drama from Manchester’s awardwinning writer Billy Cowan of Truant Company, the company behind Smilin’ Through (Writing Out International Award winner 2003 and MEN Best New Play nominee 2005.)
Albert Pierrepoint, the most celebrated hangman the British judicial system has ever produced, maintained the grim family tradition of providing executions to the State. In this thoughtful, sometimes macabre presentation, the affable executioner poignantly recounts a singular life which nobody could comprehend. But as he shares his thoughts with us, we have in constant view a 19-year-old condemned man in his cell.
With knife and gun crime apparently out of control, this thought-provoking new play shows how violence can affect young lives. Billy O’Reilly is an intelligent young lad who endures years of abuse from his father that pushes his mind to breaking point. When he is imprisoned for his father’s murder he continues to fall further away from reality, and turn into someone he never wanted to be…his own father.

With the King on his death bed, and creditors knocking on her door, Nell recalls her radiant life. From the gutters of Covent Garden to glittering actress, Nell survived the Plague and Great Fire to become the best-loved character of her day. Admired by Pepys and the muse of Dryden, her life with King Charles lasted for 18 turbulent years. His last words were of her.
Following the sell-out success of The Bench (The Lowry, 2008), Joe O’Byrne returns to Paradise Heights.

Les Hommes dans Robes de Chambre
Thu 18 June
(The Men in Dressing Gowns) Fri 3 & Sat 4 July
East goes West; communism goes capitalism; atheism goes God. From Croatia to America and back, this intense, dramatic, solo comedy show is about three women; three generations who lived through three wars, three concentration camps, three governments, three countries and three currencies. The story is about freedom of the spirit not the political systems. Through music, tears and great comic timing, this story can’t leave you untouched.
In 1940s war-torn Britain, Arnold Thacker and Billy Langhorn, two disparate and desperate Music Hall comedians performing at a theatre during the Manchester blitz are sitting in their dressing room, waiting to go on stage.

In a succulent portrayal of their increasing boredom, their performance explodes into burlesque, improvisation, clowning, music hall, puppetry and dance. A journey into the complexities of friendship.
Three Sheets Thu 23 – Fri 25 July
Unexpectedly funny, Three Sheets by award-winning writer Christine Marshall (Salford Stuffers, The Lowry 2006) is inspired by a true event that took place between Jean and Evie, two NHS student nurses, and Tommy, a dying miner. Set in 1984 against the background of miners picketing outside the hospital, Evie and Jean battle with their own issues along with Tommy’s notion that an individual should have choice in the system in which he finds himself at the end of his life. From the RSC’s epic staging of Tantalus in 2001, via Robert Lepage’s masterly Dragons’ Trilogy in 2005, and through National Theatre of Scotland’s award-winning Blackwatch in 2008, The Lowry has always showcased the best international productions where expectations of a ‘normal’ theatre space are challenged, be it through the use of narrative, audience interaction, production techniques, location or sheer scale.
No Boundaries is The Lowry’s season showcasing innovative, exciting and above all entertaining new work that goes above, around, behind and beyond any invisible ‘fourth wall’ between the audience and performers. Whether it is Fireflies’ use of multimedia - bringing an approach more attuned to film than the theatrical world - or the ‘uber-hot’ Slung Low, bringing They Only Come At Night: Resurrection, where you, the audience, are at the heart of the pulse-quickening action, this is entertainment unbridled by standard theatre protocols and bursting with new ideas.
They Only Come at Night: Resurrection Wed 2 - Sat 12 September Following a sell-out run at the Barbican Theatre in London with Helium, Slung Low brings a world première to The Lowry. Milo is a graphic novelist and his latest offering, They Only Come at Night, is eagerly awaited by all in the know. And now you’re in the know. You are invited to the VIP launch of his most exciting work to date; based on the imaginary events that took place one night when creatures took over a multi-storey car park. But rumours on the internet are suggesting that maybe those events weren't imaginary after all. That maybe Milo is in over his head shining a light on a world that is best left in the shadows? This show is a theatre installation, a promenade piece where seating will not always be available. Contains violent images and scenes of a frightening nature. Fri 16 – Sat 31 October The Lowry presents Fireflies, a gripping new play from writer Kevin Fegan, directed by Noreen Kershaw, one of the directors of the hit Channel 4 series Shameless. Smart, funny and startlingly original, Fireflies tells the stories of Leigh and Nelson, two characters in crisis on a housing estate in the Salford area. It’s a hard knock life for Leigh and Nelson, and Fegan’s sober but moving script brilliantly conveys their resilience in the face of hardship. Will Leigh and Nelson see each other's signals in time? With Fireflies The Lowry proudly continues its commitment to developing imaginative theatre inspired by local places, people and events. Video cameras, TV screens, CCTV and computers by turns take centre stage in this powerful and impressive multi-media production, where the tragic breakdown of communication is highlighted by flashes of brilliant interaction. Contains strong language and adult themes.

Kathakitathom – The Rhythm of Nirvana
The Rain Parade Thu 4 June
Baharan – The Spring
Verve 2009 Fri 19 June
Sun 7 June
Sun 17 May This stunning contemporary dance show from Bangalore has a rhythm and vibrancy that captures the essence of Kathak and takes it beyond the defined traditional norms. Embodying the kinetic energy of Kathak, the passionate devotion of a true lover and the unfettered spirit of a dance sculptor, Kathakitathom showcases the North Indian traditional dance in a rare, pulsating atmosphere. Art is suffused in the body and soul of dance, sprouting as a fountain of vitality and the rhythm of Nirvana.
This blackly comic and provocative new duet from the award-winning Lost Dog looks forward to the end of the world. Mankind’s last three survivors are left trying to make sense of what happened and piece together some kind of coherent history – but they can’t remember much and they can’t agree on anything. Is this really all there is to show for mankind’s great civilisation? Suitable for ages 14+.
This vibrant dance production portrays varied human emotions in a life-affirming journey from Winter to Spring. Three distinct parts depict the seamless transitions through the seasons: the Wintry longing, the exciting arrival and the glorious effect of Spring. Featuring highly charismatic Kathak dancers, Baharan combines traditional dance with modern choreography, poignant poetry and the collaboration of Indian and Western classical music, adding an element of drama to the dance piece.
The award-winning postgraduate performance company from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance returns with a mixed bill of new dance. The evening comprises specially commissioned works from international choreographers, including Filip Van Huffel, Glenn Wilkinson and Milan Kozánek, along with a number of ‘shorts’ from emerging dancers from the North of England. Featuring dancers selected from leading conservatoires and universities, this exciting programme brings together the best in European and British contemporary dance.

Sir Fred and Mr B. Birmingham Royal Ballet presents classical masterpieces from Sir Frederick Ashton and George Balanchine, two of the most celebrated choreographers of the 20th century. Ashton's beautiful ballet The Two Pigeons is a simple story in which, despite temptation, true love conquers all. Balanchine's Mozartiana by contrast is a sparkling piece of pure classical dance to effervescent music from Tchaikovsky.

Collaborators for 15 years, Anthony Missen and Kevin Turner established Company Chameleon. Tonight, they present two works:
Rites examines the rites which have shaped the duo as individuals and as friends. It asks the question, what does it mean to be a man? Before night fell is a new work directed by award-winning choreographer Beth Cassani exploring male identity, friendship, camaraderie and bravery.
From virtuoso displays of traditional tango dance to exquisite tango songs of 1930s Buenos Aires and the powerful Nuevo Tango music of Ástor Piazzolla, Subitango is a breathtaking journey into the heart of Tango Argentino. Four of the UK’s leading tango dancers, who have also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, perform classic tangos, milongas, valses and contemporary tango pieces, combining elegance with virtuoso athleticism to create a truly breathtaking performance.
Rites is commissioned by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester. A co-promotion by Dance Initiative Greater Manchester and The Lowry. Supported by the University of Salford and Arts Council England North West.

Wine, Women & Song
Beverley Craven Sun 7 June
(Matraca Berg, Suzy Boggus & Gretchen Peters)
Sun 24 May Ben Taylor’s memorable melodies, immaculate acoustic guitar playing and insightful, honest lyrics demand your attention with songs that comes straight from the heart. The son of James Taylor and Carly Simon, Taylor’s life was always centered on music. In 2008 his third full-length album, The Legend of Kung Folk, Part 1 (The Killing Bite), put the kick back into folk music to reveal the humor, wit and skill of a singer/songwriter who’s comfortable both in his own skin and with his impressive musical legacy.
Legendary British rockers and Lowry favourites, Wishbone Ash, return to the Quays Theatre to celebrate 40 years of continuous music and twin guitar rock! Performing classic tracks off albums including The King Will Come, Throw Down The Sword and Blowin’ Free, the evening also features a visual feast, courtesy of a cleverly choreographed multimedia extravaganza as the band perform.
Following devastating performances on Later…with Jools Holland and five-star sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, Camille O’Sullivan returns to The Lowry with her acclaimed new show, Dark Angel.
Wishbone Ash will be celebrating their past whilst simultaneously embracing the future. Come and be a part of both!
Passionate, sexy, amusing and mesmerising – nothing is quite what it seems.

All three have won Country Music Association Awards for their contributions to the world of music and return to the UK following their highly successful tour in 2007. Each one could entertain you for the evening, appearing together makes for a night that Maverick magazine described as 'pure magic’.
Beverley Craven is one of the most successful singer/songwriters the UK has ever produced. Best known for her 1991 hit single Promise Me and her double-platinum, multimillion selling eponymous album, Beverley is back on the road supporting her long-awaited forthcoming CD Close to Home. Fri 24 July
Sat 25 July
The founding member and frontman of The Byrds returns as part of a hotly anticipated solo tour. The Bryds' era-defining songs like Eight Miles High, Mr Tambourine Man and Turn, Turn, Turn, became classics of the new folk rock sound. McGuinn's trademark Rickenbacker 12-string sound has influenced generations of musicians and this superb show will draw from his huge back catalogue, including his Grammy-nominated Treasures From The Folk Den and last year's critically acclaimed 22 Timeless Tracks From The Folk Den Project.
One of the most original and stunning singers of traditional music, Cara Dillon returns to The Lowry following the release of her fourth studio album Hill of Thieves. Whether she's singing her native traditional songs of lost love and emigration, or original compositions written with her husband and musical collaborator Sam Lakeman, you will be hard pressed to find a more emotive and captivating performer.
The world famous a cappella and dance group returns with their spectacular songs and dances which have thrilled audiences all over the globe. Their fun and joyful enthusiasm, and engaging and energy-driven performances feature fresh and surprising music, intricate rhythms and unusual rich harmonies, interspersed with clicking, clapping and shouting. Each show is brilliantly choreographed with a full range of movements from vibrant stomping and leaping to the captivating Gumboot Dance of South Africa.
There aren’t many bands who can have their videos played on MTV2 and have real ales named after them but there also aren’t many bands like The Lancashire Hotpots. Their first album Never Mind The Hotpots with its comedic folk observations on 21st Century life reached No 2 in the BBC 6 Music Album charts. Their new album Pot Sounds offers further comic insights into topics such as climate change (Don’t Make The Polar Bears Cry) and Saturday afternoon shopping (I Fear Ikea).
Be dazzled and uplifted by this 45-piece multi-cultural and cross-generational choir who are united by a love of music, performance and God. Established for the Manchester International Festival as part of Gorillaz, Manchester Sing Out Choir is now much in demand. Performances include Manchester's homecoming celebrations for the 2008 Beijing Olympic athletes and for civil rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson.

Lucy Porter brings her distinctive, bouncy, feelgood style back to The Lowry with her new show The Bare Necessities. This stripped-down hour of nakedly funny stand-up comedy is Lucy’s most thought-provoking show to date. Talking about the really important things in her life, Lucy ponders the erosion of our civil liberties, the rise of surveillance society, the infantilisation of grown-ups, the reason why so many comedians are depressive alcoholics and the ingredients for a really excellent dirty martini.

A sell-out at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe, Something Blue is a theatre cabaret about the highs and lows of falling in love. Five female performers use clowning, a cappella singing, puppetry, rapid costume change, absurd characters and physical theatre to explore this rich and universal territory. The show is accompanied by a giddy array of live and recorded music ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Rufus Wainwright.
‘Superlative... jokes come thick and fast.’
Drawing on his background with razor sharp observational wit, Micky tells a comic tale of a working class upbringing where alphabetti spaghetti was a luxury and a bottle of Black Tower the height of sophistication. But over 25 years he’s gone from Sunblest to panini, tabloids to broadsheets, street party to dinner party; bemoaning the lot of modern man in pursuit of the perfect idle day and celebrating being turned away from a night club because his feet are killing him.

Jude returns to The Lowry with her unique blend of observational comedy, witty wordplay, poetry, rap and song. Do you have to wait for happiness or can you make it happen? Is there a link between happiness and virtue? From falling in love to appreciating the work of one's spleen, Jude's upbeat performance has wide appeal, a strong feel-good factor and the ability to leave you with a suspicion that maybe, just maybe, everything’s going to be OK…
Writer, broadcaster, raconteur and Australia’s finest export, Clive James has been a British institution for longer than he cares to remember. In an unprecedented feat of strength he carries his latest book on stage and then talks about almost anything else, after which he answers questions about everything except his liaison with Margarita Pracatan. There is no stage, no public and no fixed spot in the lights where actors perform. Everything happens in your head, and yet it doesn't. This show is an intense and intimate experience at the point where performance art meets theatre. Everyone will have a unique response – but leave feeling ultimately exhilarated.

Pirates of Penzance
New Connections
(Broadway Version)
Tue 5 – Sat 9 May
Sat 27 June
Tue 5 – Sat 9 May
Adapted from the poems of Carol Ann Duffy. Carol Ann Duffy’s acclaimed poems imagine the wives’ perspectives of famous men. From Mrs Faust and Frau Freud to Queen Kong and Mrs Midas, this delightful new show slices through history and myth, whilst casting an astute glance over the modern world. Laced with dark humour and acerbic wit, this passionate exposé will enthral lovers of Duffy’s poems and those new to her work alike. Linda Marlowe performs Duffy’s brilliant and often controversial verse, interspersing commentary about the poems.
This rip roaring romp is a swashbuckling take on the original Gilbert and Sullivan classic. The world's worst band of pirates are celebrating their youngest member Frederick's coming of age when love intervenes in the form of the Major General's daughter. Timbers are shivered, honours are broken, allegiances are changed and changed back again and the result is a hilarious comedy featuring well-loved songs such as the bombastic I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General and the sweetly innocent Climbing over Rocky Mountains.
The annual season of exciting new plays for young actors returns. Thousands of young people work both on stage and behind the scenes to create plays specifically commissioned for them by the National Theatre. With a recurring theme familiar to all young people, the forging of first friendships, each play stresses the human dilemma faced when trying to make a new connection with another person. Visit www.thelowry.com/connect for a summary of the plays, plus detailed performance times. Supported by Arts Council England.

Discounts and concessions
Parking There is a passenger drop-off point immediately in front of The Lowry. Secure parking is available in the Lowry Outlet Mall car park, which also has designated areas for disabled people on each level. We recommend that Blue Badge holders enter the car park at the entrance near the mini roundabout on the road leading from The Quays as this will allow parking on the ground floor level. For more information on disabled parking please contact the Lowry Outlet Mall Customer Relations Desk on 0161 848 1850. To reduce your waiting time at the end of the evening we strongly recommend that you pre-pay for your parking at a cost of £4 (valid between 5pm and 1am). Simply take your ticket to the car park office when you enter the car park - located in the basement car park by the Marks and Spencer escalator. Receivers for our Sennheiser infra-red facility are available from the Information Desk. Please advise Box Office of your requirements when booking theatre tickets.
Guide dogs are welcome.
Toilet facilities available on all levels.
ACCESSIBLE PRINT This brochure is available in audio format, please ask Box Office for a copy.
The Lowry offers discounts to the following people: under 16s, students in full-time education, disabled people, 60+ in full-time retirement, job seekers and participants of the New Deal. When child tickets are listed separately, no extra concessions apply. These discounts are subject to availability and may vary according to the visiting producer and the show.
