We stayed in the room type “Pool Villa” with three rooms to sleep, a spacious living room and a private swimming pool decorated with white tone. The Taj Mahal has had many flipping through dictionaries to find the right words to describe it. Some call it the poetry of architecture and some call it the immortal monument of love. Having been the symbol of India for decades now, The Taj Mahal continues to mesmerize man. Built by the fifth Mughal emperor Shahjahan (1628 – 1658), this monument has immortalized the name of Mumtaz Mahal, the beloved wife of Shahjahan, in whose memory he built this stunning tomb. Regarded as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’. It is considered by western historians that its architectural beauty is yet to be surpassed. Built entirely of white marble, the Taj looks stunning at dawn and sunset. Appearing to glow on a full moon night, it also gives visitors on a foggy morning an illusion of it being suspended in the air when viewed from across the Yamuna River.
‘As I walk beside the strand of water that leads to the plinth, the Taj Mahal begins to unveil its intricacies as the haze begin to clear out.’ The Taj stands tall at a height of 213 feet on raised square platform with its four corners truncated, forming an unequal octagon. The architectural design uses the interlocking arabesque concept, in which each element stands on its own and perfectly integrates with the main structure. It uses the principle of self –replicating geometry and a symmetry of architectural element.
The Taj Mahal was the brainchild of Ustad Isa, the chief architect of the monument. Expert craftsmen from Delhi, Qannauj, Lahore and Multan, Baghdad, Shiraz and Bukhara were given the task of making the Taj Mahal an eternal wonder. The entire mausoleum is decorated with inlaid designs of flowers and calligraphy using precious gems such as agate and jasper. The main archways, chiseled with passages from the holy Qur’an and the bold scrollwork in a flowery pattern give a captivating charm to its beauty. The central domed chamber and four adjoining chambers include many walls and panels of Islamic decoration.
‘The milieu is lush and peaceful. There’s a sense of solace in here as I run my hand over the delicately curved ridges of the lattice marble screens.’ Adding more aura to the environment are the gardens which are based on the Persian garden plan style. Designed by Ali Mardan Khan, one of the nobles of Shah Jahan’s court, the Taj Mahal garden is the perfect place to flirt with paradise. Dividing the garden at the centre, four still pools reflect the astounding beauty of the Taj. Apart from that, the mausoleum also consists of a mosque, a guest house and several other palatial buildings.

Yes, I graduated as a Merchant marine but I soon realized that I didn’t actually like the job which felt like travelling in a big steel box! So I decided to explore and experience different possibilities with my skills. I joined the French polar expeditions which was a great experience. After that I travelled quite a bit in Africa and finally I returned to France. There I joined in the position of Captain on a yacht. From day one I just loved it and could not believe that you even get paid to do this job. However, after 18 years at sea, due to some family reason I decided it was time for a change and as luck would have it, I had this business opportunity.
I have several ambitions but one of them is to bring the traditional Indonesian boat building techniques to the yacht world. If we were bringing this boat to the Monaco yacht show we will probably be the star. I believe that the WOW factor for a yacht does not come from the satellite communication system or the generators management system but rather from seeing all the modern equipment and safety features incorporated into our traditional hull. It feels like stepping back in history with the modern technology. Also when it comes to designing the itinerary, we want to show naturally beautiful destinations for our guests, across the South East Asia. We do not want to ever become a cruise where guests feel they are at a five star hotel so are just relaxing. Presently, the yacht industry is too often missing the warmth and authenticity. There is too much focus on etiquette. A lot of yacht crews are scared of clients. But it is more important that guests have a memorable time and if that requires you to suggest something other then what guest requests then so be it. That is how we have kept the crew, they are very respectful but they drive the cruise.
So If I am to understand, the impact of local hospitality is one of the major reasons behind you starting?

I consulted an interior designer with my ideas and he also had some great inputs in the design. We have seven bedrooms distributed over 2 levels, including a huge 50sqm master bedroom which gives a full 180 degree view over the waters to enjoy. The others are 30 sqm. The boat has a consistent ivory tone with nothing too flashy so as to feel earthen. There is an Arabic tent which goes very well with design and provides a unique experience on board.

Was there any particular reason for selecting Indonesia to start the business? Indonesia was actually a bit of a chance. Initially my family and I moved to Australia. From there I travelled around Eastern Indonesia. I was really amazed with what I experienced- stunning scenery and amazing people. During these travels I also noticed some beautiful exotic traditional boat being built and the idea sparked in my mind. With working experience as a Captain, I could visualize a traditional sailing yacht cruising amongst these remote lands. There had never been a yacht which was built from Indonesia, so it was a challenge but I had the motivation and the experience to go through with my idea. When I first visited Indonesia, I hired a wooden canoe for 10 days and visited this place called ‘The Passage’ which actually made me question if I was still on earth. At the first sunset after a full afternoon in wonderland, my friend asked me what fish I liked to eat and we were able to fish it out fresh within one minute. It was a life changing experience. And that is the experience which formed the backbone of starting my business. Even the hospitality I experienced at small old island villages was inspirational. I could clearly see
So how do you maintain the standards of Interior design for such traditionally built boats? Since our yacht was very different from the conventional yachts, I actually didn’t consult a yacht designer. I usually don’t enjoy the conventional yacht interiors as I find them to be too rich. Comfort should always be prioritized over look. I wanted people to feel comfortable and be carefree and not make them feel as if they are going to break something if they are not careful. Maintenance is another factor which I take into consideration when designing. If it is not easy to maintain you end up losing your charm. The build was carried out in 2 stages. To start off with the hull was built on a beautiful white sandy beach in Sulawesi. During this build stage all the techniques and materials used were very traditional - hand tools and the ancestral knowledge. We believe the master builder is the mother of the boat and so after 9 months, just like a mother carrying a child, the build was ready for the next stage. We had the launching ceremony on completion of this stage and as per the traditions we spread the blood of a buffalo on the bow with a ritual to scare 2 black roosters so that the Lamima would have the strength and luck. We pulled 350 tons of wood without a crane to get the boat into the water. It took 50 men, 2 months and a full moon to finally get Lamima afloat. I worked with the Italthai Marine division for the next stage of the build and it was a great experience. It was a big challenge for them as well since they had never worked with a wooden boat. Initially they were very worried and I had to push to get them started but then they did a terrific job. Since the hull was entirely a wooden structure, the management was tensed. When building with steel you can correct any mistake through welding but with wood you need to plan carefully as you cannot just replace a wrong cut. It would create a weak spot. It took almost three months to begin as we were bringing ancestral techniques to a modern shipyard. One of the major differences in the design approach is that in the modern technique we first build the quill with the frame and then we put the planks. In Indonesia, they build the quill and then place the planks before building the frames. This is so that they never have to over stress the wood. The result of that technic was a wider boat and so we had to redo all our technical drawing to adapt to the new shape.

After the boat was ready, how did you handle the entire management of operations and staff especially with your focus on local benefits, even if we consider the future visions? I always had clarity in my mind on the type of crew I wanted for the cruise. So when I hired my crew I spent a lot of time with them initially. During this initiation process they became very well aware of what I expect. Thereafter, the day to day operations are handled perfectly by them. For any expenses or budget related discussion we talk together. Nowadays I actually spend more time doing marketing – a side I didn’t know I had. I also get involved in the itinerary planning as I love to see new destinations. I am very lucky to have a knowledgeable crew. When planning an itinerary the entire crew gives inputs from their area of expertise like cultural planning, diving spots etc. It is because of such a knowledgeable crew that we are able to plan new itineraries quickly; else it would take me at least five years to get the local knowledge to cover all the options! Because I was a Captain before, it helped me a lot as I knew what I was looking for. So even though I was new to this part of the world I was able to catch up quickly as I was very clear in what I wanted. Today we are very well organized operationally. The boat capacity is of occupying 14 guests and you have 20 crew members. Any particular reason behind having so much more crew?
It was definitely a challenge. Thankfully I had a very understanding financial partner who is also a friend, so we could cope up with any initial roadblocks. I was convinced in my mind that this boat concept and the cruise experience I had planned was definitely going to be successful. When we started taking reservations I thought that if you have a website on the internet then everyone can see you and it is enough. But I have now realized it is not that simple. I understood that you need to work on the website to increase its visibility. Another thing I understood was that the yacht brokers are not your salesman. Inspite of them knowing my standards and how I run my cruise they were not pushing it for me. That is why I believe there is a need of passionate people in this broker industry. Everyone is searching for new destinations every time and most of the yacht owners as well as customers trust the brokers. But if the broker does not push new destinations with enough belief, the client is not going to buy that. What I have realized is that while the clients are easy going and approachable, brokers are the exact opposite. They are suspicious to new cruises and are afraid of hurting their own reputations by experimenting. I started spending more time on marketing to see how I can increase the visibility and awareness about my boat to prospective guests. I know that once the guests have experienced our service they will return and actually they make references as well.

You can walk around 360 degrees here and see the red and orange sunlight on the horizon, thus it is aptly named Red Sky. It’s location, at Central. World, makes it very convenient to reach. After all that is the largest place for shopping in Bangkok. When we reached the restaurant, the decoration with spacious arrangement in red caught out eye. What a romantic ambience, especially if you visit as a couple. Besides the lovely atmosphere and the fresh breeze, the view from here is astonishing. You can see the skyline of Bangkok – which is a certain type of beauty. Moving on from the ambience how could I not talk about food and drinks? There is a good variety of cocktails prepared here for guests to choose from. There is also a long food menu but I think I will talk about the interesting choices that you should not miss! The fragrance of the big piece of lobster creates a perfectly balanced taste. This set is for 2. But it’s fair to say that it’s really a lot, maybe just right for 4. The meat of the crabs is sweet and has a nice white color.
