nspiration can come through many avenues in life. Over the years I have heard some amazing stories from artists, designers, and architects about their inspirations for specific designs. Sometimes it comes from something so simple. Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer, for example, was inspired by the lightness and strength of the handlebars on his bicycle to make furniture from tubular, macaroni-like steel. The result: the Wassily chair that propelled furniture designers all over the world to start experimenting with tubular steel. Other times it’s about comfort. Designer Florence Knoll told fellow designer and architect Eero Saarinen that she wanted a chair that was like a “basket full of pillows, something I can really curl up in.” The result was Saarinen’s Womb chair, one of the most iconic pieces of modern design. The designs of all of the homes featured in our June issue were dictated by the owners’ inspirations. For one family it was a plot of land on Moody Beach (Contemporizing the Vernacular, page 72); for another it was a fireplace (Hearth and Home, page 106). Another owner desired a New England home that would incorporate the architectural styles she admired growing up in New Orleans (Bayou Blend, page 90).

Many residential structures are erected in response to change, whether it is a marriage, the arrival of a child, a need to downsize, or a change in a person's ability. hortly after I graduated from design school I decided to make the move to Portland. Although I was born in southern Maine, a half-hour away in Buxton, Portland was still somewhat unfamiliar to me. On a crisp fall day I was walking down Market Street when I looked up and saw a series of logos in the window of a historic brick building read: Maine Home+Design, Maine, and Old Port. I did my research, picked up a handful of magazines, and fell in love page by page. This team, right on my doorstep, was creating some of the most beautiful publications I had ever seen! It didn’t happen overnight, but I eventually found myself in an interview with the publisher and the editor-in-chief. That was in late December, and on January 1, I joined my family here at the Maine Media Collective, first as production manager, then as art director for Maine and Old Port magazines. Now, as I write this note, the finishing touches are being put on my first issue of Maine Home+Design as art director. I joined these publications with a strong passion for beautiful design and architecture. What I didn’t know was that I also had an undiscovered love of storytelling. This organization has given me the opportunity to share the stories of Maine and its incredible residents. Over the past

two and a half years this job has sent me to corners of the state I had never seen before. from frozen lakes in Aroostook County to remote islands in Casco Bay. Maine Home+Design has shown me that every house has a story to tell as well. I am blessed to work alongside the most talented writers, photographers, architects, builders, and designers in the state. We collaborate in an environment that fosters independent and creative thinking. Each member’s voice is heard, from the editorial team, contributing photographers, and writers to the homeowners, designers, and contractors in our articles. What binds us together is that we share the passion for good design and storytelling. I feel incredibly honored to sit at this desk alongside loving colleagues. Joe Seremeth of WoodLab brings an architect’s vision to life without sacrificing functionality or style

“W

ith this one, it’s beautiful. It’s a really nice bathroom. Clearly the approach was minimalist, and you certainly get a sense of serenity here. It’s a very peaceful, beautiful place to relax. The design is from a well-known local architect, Carol Wilson. The whole thing is straight from her drawing. I do a lot of my own design work, but many of the things we build come from architects and designers. A lot of times we get drawings and will flesh out the ideas so they’re functional. Designs often come through to us, and I have to make them work. The architect drew this, and we helped bring it to life. “Although I’m proud of this work, and we’re always very happy to take part in these beautiful projects, this photograph showcases some of the less complicated work we do. In this particular bathroom, there are actually two other very attractive flush teak cabinets. To the left of the sinks is a three-door veneered credenza with continuous grain. “These specific shelves are made of teak, as is the ceiling. They’re seemingly floating with no support, but there are hidden brackets secured to the framing in the wall. That’s how they’re able to support the two sinks. The ceiling is actually built in a panelized shiplap system we created. In order to achieve the seamless look that was desired, every four slats are mounted to a piece of half-inch ply, which acts as a backer and creates a tongue for the next slat panel to lap onto. “The architect was very specific about the coloring of the teak and wanted it to be very uniform. But when you’re talking about a natural material, there is always going to be variation. Different pieces of teak come from different trees. When you get teak in the rough and you open it, it’s every color of the rainbow. It’s green, it’s purple, and it’s orange. At first there was some concern, but experience tells me that you have to wait. When it’s exposed to sunlight over time, that’s when the well-known brown color of teak comes out. It was winter, but I took every chance to bring it out into the sun while we had it.” —Joe Seremeth, owner of WoodLab MH+D

he early spring sky is gray and spitting snow as I pull in to the parking lot of Margo Moore Interiors on Elm Street in Camden. Once inside, I’m immediately warmed and cheered by both the colorful, cozy shop and the friendly greeting from designer Megan van der Kieft, whose parents, Marcy and Peter van der Kieft, founded the business nearly four decades ago. Sensing my curiosity, Megan offers me a tour of the building, once a stately home, which has been added onto over the years. On the first floor, various rooms hold beautifully curated displays of home furnishings and accessories, including pillows, lamps, rugs, bed linens, blankets, glassware, and china. Soft pajamas, socks, and other clothing from Ugg are displayed in a corridor between the main part of the house and a barnlike space with cubbies holding decorative pillows and rug samples from Dash and Albert. I find inspiration for my own home everywhere I look. Upstairs is the design hub, where Megan and Marcy meet with clients. What seem to be thousands of fabric samples are stored everywhere in books, hung on the walls and stacked on shelves and organized by color. On a table, photos and fabric squares offer insight into Megan’s design work. She is in the process of assembling

a binder of ideas for a client on North Haven—suggesting window treatments, custom bed linens, and furniture to complement the rustic interiors of an old Maine cottage. “We don’t have a specific style,” she says. “There’s every walk of life here, and everyone wants something different. People come to us because we know our products.” In 1971 Marcy and Peter opened a women’s clothing boutique named after Marcy’s mother Margo, with whom Marcy had run a similar shop in Darien, Connecticut. The van der Kiefts soon added home accessories to their inventory, and Marcy began helping customers and friends with interior design projects. A decade later, the shop was rebranded Margo Moore Interiors. Megan began helping out at the store when she was eight years old. “I was always underfoot, sweeping, organizing, dusting,” she says. After leaving Maine for college and the early years of her career, she joined the business eight years ago, bringing her status as an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers to the family operation. Thanks to her education and experience, Megan knows the interior design business from the supply side as well as the creative side. After her freshman year at Lasell College in Newton, Massachusetts, she switched paths and entered Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, where she

studied interior architecture and facility management. Following graduation, she worked on retail store design for Sunglass Hut and Watch Station in Florida before returning to New England and a three-year stint with Home Depot, first as a designer and then as maintenance manager for 69 stores across Connecticut and New York. Tired of traveling and being away from her then-boyfriend, now-husband Frank Carozza, Megan became a private estate manager for a Boston-based family before returning to her native Camden. “I already understood interior design,” Megan says about her decision to pursue a related but different path at Wentworth. “I understood spatial relationships, colors, and textures. What I didn’t understand was how to manage it.” She credits a year off working at the Boston Design Center, work that she continued when she went back to school, for insight into many of the processes involved in her current work. “Having experienced the stress on the other side, hearing a designer say, ‘I thought it was ten weeks?’ It’s actually ten weeks from deposit,

and ten weeks from when we receive your fabric,” she explains. “I think now I understand the components, where it’s shipping from, who’s shipping it, and I can ask the right questions.” As an example, she points out a nearby chair, upholstered in royal blue with white piping. “There are two fabrics on that chair that came from two different vendors, and the chair itself is made by a third vendor,” Megan explains. “There’s such a level of chaos and so many unknowns to get that chair upholstered that way.” The “chaos,” fitting all the pieces of the design puzzle together, is a large part of how Megan embraces her work. “I love it,” she says emphatically. “I love the customers. I love my relationships with my vendors, and I also love the construction people—the people that are making it happen for me, and pushing them to their limits. ‘How do I get that 200-pound chandelier up there? I have absolutely no idea, but you do, and you have the talent, so let’s talk it out.’” She also stresses that, while some of her work involves custom design projects, she will also do

consultations on an hourly fee basis—helping homeowners choose colors, for instance, or to figure out placement of furniture in a room. “I enjoy sharing my information,” she says. “I don’t ever want to steer away somebody who says, ‘I want to come in and pay you for your time.’ I could end up finding a $250 pillow that makes their $700 bed look like a $5,000 bed.” While Marcy has been a primary inspiration, Megan credits her curiosity to Peter, a realtor with the Camden offices of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty who is “secretly involved” at Margo Moore Interiors. “Dad is our backbone here,” Megan says. “He does our window displays. He loves going down on the buying trips with us to New York or Atlanta or going antiquing, or driving my mother to a client’s house and just wandering around. They’re a dynamic duo.”

When Megan and her husband first decided to move to Maine, he expressed interest in joining the business as well. But that would have been too much family, Megan says, so instead Carozza went to nursing school and is now the nurse manager of surgical care and endoscopy at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Married for 21 years, the couple has three-year-old twins: daughter Frankie, named for her father and grandfather, and son Lucca. “There’s something magical about this state, and even more magical about the midcoast; I would never want my children to grow up anywhere else,” Megan says. “The relationships that are made here—people are so open.” In Maine, in Camden, at home, and at work, Megan is right where she wants to be. “This is my second home,” she says, gesturing around the shop. “Look at these colors. Look at this texture. Look at this beauty. This is inspiration.” MH+D

“W

e’re lawyers, so we both always have opinions on things,” says Carmita Alonso of herself and her husband, Ed Estrada. They and their sons, however, were in complete agreement about buying a house on Moody Beach in Wells. They already had a home there, but not one on the beach. When such a property became available, the New York–based family drove north through a blizzard to see it. The house faced the very stretch of sand on which the family liked to take walks, and it had views of the nearby salt marsh. The existing structure had a lot to recommend it—Alonso thought it was “homey and cute”—although a large red-brick fireplace blocked the views, and the knotholes in the upstairs wood floors allowed one to see through to the ground floor. Here opinions diverged. Estrada thought the house needed a renovation. Alonso thought it needed to be knocked down and rebuilt. “I had to let him reach the same conclusion,” she jokes. Once Estrada agreed to rebuild, Jon Moody and the crew of Richard Moody and Sons Construction in Wells and Erik Peterson of Peterson Design Group in Kennebunk and Portland razed the house and replaced it with a shingle-style cottage with decorative flair and a beachy, contemporary interior.

During the school year, Alonso and her family live in a traditional, historic house in Bronxville, New York. When they renovated that year-round home, Alonso did it the “right” way, she says, hiring an interior designer. But for her Maine house, she wanted to collaborate. She gave Moody and Peterson a great deal of freedom but also many inspirational photos. Then she did the interior design herself. “To me, that is the fun part. Why would I pay someone to do what I love to do?” Because of setbacks and other regulations, Peterson designed the house on piers. Many of the houses on Moody Beach are 50 feet by 100 feet, an allotment that can be somewhat boxy, says Peterson. To work against this tendency, he broke up the mass of the house, cantilevering the second floor over the first and using peak gables of different sizes, varied fenestration, and shingle flares between the first and second floor. He also incorporated porches that alternatively press forward (as does a circular front porch with banquette seating) and press back (as does an inset balcony off an oceanside bedroom). Inside, Peterson worked against the box by angling the walls by 10 degrees, a surprising choice that creates visual interest while opening up views and maximizing space. Where you first step into the house, the foyer walls angle outward, as if they are doors swinging open to the sand and

water. You “explode” into the view, as Peterson says, because once inside the house you are looking through the structure at a stunning stretch of sand and ocean. Glass fills the back wall of the first floor’s central space, in the form of an oversized bay window (with daybed), glass doors, and two outsized casement windows. The first floor is chic and modern, with white oak floors that have been whitewashed to suggest driftwood and a white leather sectional couch that faces a natural stone veneer fireplace with a white oak mantel. A sleek kitchen occupies the right side of the room. Dividing kitchen and dining area is an island with a waterfall countertop— that is, a countertop where the surface material spills over one wall of the island until it meets the ground. An additional counter extends the length of the kitchen–dining area wall. Above the countertop, this wall has two translucent window cabinets that frame a glass tile wall with floating shelves displaying dishware. Below the counter, the cabinetry is flat panel with a routed edge (rather than an observable pull), which keeps things looking clean. The natural neutrals of the first floor are accented with the blues and aquas of the dishware; the blue, tan, and white swirls of the thick Cambria quartz countertop; and the light aqua pillows on the daybed. A switchback staircase of white oak with stainless-steel cabling and stainless-steel newels leads up to the second floor, which has a bunkroom, office, guest room, and owners’ bedroom, and then to a third floor with an extra sitting area and an adjacent boys’ bedroom with twin beds and white quilts decorated with small navy anchors. The house reflects its location, and not only by being open to the views. Maine appears in the form of shells in glass jars and sliding barn doors (for the kitchen pantry and powder room) and beach stone tile for the boys’ bathroom floor. But elsewhere the vernacular is embedded in the very design—as with the traditional white V-match paneling (used on the first-floor ceiling and above the fireplace) and the contemporary take on nickel-gap. “Nickel-gap” refers to boards being laid next to each other with a gap wide enough to fit a nickel. In order to maximize places to sleep, architect Erik Peterson and builder Jon Moody of Richard Moody and Sons Construction found creative ways to add storage to the design. In this bunkroom for guests, drawers are incorporated below the lower full beds and within the stairs to the upper twin beds. Each bed has its own charging station, nautically inspired lamp, window, and storage nook. The upper bunks also have steel bars fashioned by Tunnelwerks International. A switchback staircase (opposite) of white oak, stainless-steel cabling, and stainless-steel newels is capped with wood by Tunnelwerks International. The picture is a map of Maine with E.B. White’s words, “I would rather feel bad in Maine than feel good anywhere else.”

from great room, the blocky, angled trim is not traditional, but the gap that Moody and his crew incorporated into the trim is. He used a similar gap as a decorative “shadow line” for the edge of the ceiling moulding, the white oak fireplace mantel, and the white oak first-floor ceiling beams. Upstairs, hints of Maine can be seen in the owners’ bedroom, which has a vaulted ceiling with the open framing that you might see in an uninsulated summer cottage. One particularly fun design project, says Moody, was the bunkroom, which is a nautically outfitted guest bedroom with two full beds below and twin beds above. Each bed has its own window and cubby with reading light and USBport charging station. Tunnelwerks (which is responsible for the steelwork on the staircase) also made fall bars for the upper bunks. Because storage is tight, given the lack of a basement and minimal attic space, the Moody team

fit in extra storage wherever they could. In the bunkroom, the staircase that leads from one bunk level to the next incorporates drawers. Alonso describes herself as a “high/low” designer, finding items for her house at places as varied as Amazon.com, HomeGoods, T.J.Maxx, Restoration Hardware, AllModern, the Kimball Shop and Boutique, Houzz, and Wayfair. She purchased the bulk of her lighting online and sight unseen. That said, she likes to shop local when she can. The Wells house has twill cotton Brahms Mount blankets, which Alonso purchased from L.L.Bean, and lobster rope mats that she found at Cape Porpoise Trading Company. Against the generally restrained aesthetic, she has a few more eyecatching pieces, such as some sparkly kitchen pendant lamps that include round and oval pendants made of capiz shell circles rimmed in silver, and a striking oversized orb

made of turquoise beads strung on copper wires, which hangs in the owners’ bedroom. “I need a little of my own flashy personality,” she jokes of these choices. “I have to have a little glamour in this.” Another surprise is the abundant use of mirrors as decoration. A giant porthole mirror hangs in the bunkroom. An oversized mirror composed of several circular mirrors faces another mirror in the secondfloor hallway. Mirrors face each other in the third-floor sitting room, and a mirror hangs to the right of the refrigerator. Even the frame of Alonso and Estrada’s upholstered bed’s headboard is a mirror. “You will notice they make a room look bigger or reflect the outdoors,” Alonso says. She first saw mirrors used as decoration in India, where she traveled for her work as an immigration lawyer. Even before she decorated her Wells home—and then once she had finished furnishing—she thought, “It’s such a cool thing to do, especially when you have a beautiful view outside.” Though she picked up the design trick in India, Alonso finds herself using mirrors here for one more pleasure: the way they reflect the Maine light, which fills the house, drawing people outside even as it illuminates a beautiful reason for staying inside. hen it comes to a love for Maine, Luke Halliger* had a head start over his wife, Jill*—but not by much. Luke grew up on the midcoast and spent summers on North Haven. Jill is from New Orleans originally, but came to know Maine through summer sleepaway camp in Freedom and during family vacations on the coast. The two met at college in Vermont and, after a decade in San Francisco, decided to move to the place they shared a fondness for. “We were drawn back to Maine by its authenticity, its beauty, and all that it has to offer a growing family,” says Jill. Easing themselves out of city life, they landed first in Portland, in a 100-year-old home, then bought a densely wooded and promising piece of land in Falmouth where they could start from scratch and create a home for them and their two young boys. Falmouth architects Kevin Browne and Chris Herlihy of Kevin Browne Architecture, along with KC Construction and Jarrod Bernier Fine Carpentry, got to work creating a family-friendly home that spoke to the distinct aesthetic of both owners. Jill was drawn to the architecture of her childhood in New Orleans: tall ceilings, oversized doors and windows, and generous mouldings. Luke leaned more contemporary and preferred the farmhouse aesthetic so prevalent in New England. The architects’ challenge was to design a house that would marry Jill’s southern roots with the local vernacular. On the exterior, this meant a covered porch and roof pitches that are steeper than usual. “We felt

that Kevin did a great job interpreting our vision for the exterior of the house,” says Jill. “He nailed the directional look and feel with his very first sketch. He really focused on the exterior symmetry, and it executed very well.” On the interior, ten-foot-high ceilings give the rooms a generous feel. One of the strongest nods to New Orleans was made in the window design. Browne and Herlihy’s design called for oversized windows with tall casements and transoms above them that reach within six inches of the high ceilings. “The vertically proportioned grille pattern is reminiscent of a New Orleans home,” says Browne. To balance out some of the more formal elements, the architects kept the inside trim clean, more typical of that found in a farmhouse. Slightly less traditional floors are wide, rustic white oak finished with Rubio Monocoat, a matte, vegetable-based stain, in a greige tone. Like many modern-day families, the Halligers desired an open floor plan, with one strong exception: they had to have a formal dining room. “An actual dining room was important—we use it for family dinner every night,” says Jill. Having a kitchen at the center of the action was also a top priority. Jill loves to cook but didn’t want to be closed off from the kids or conversations with guests, so a generously sized open kitchen with a multiuse island and high-powered stove and hood was important, as was a walk-in pantry. The kitchen receives ample daylight, so the team at Kitchen Cove Cabinetry and Design kept the kitchen design light and bright. They chose to limit upper cabinetry to maximize windows that were designed to come right down to the countertops,

Beaded inset cabinetry features relatively minimal doors in a light color called Stone Bluff, and the honed Bianco Dolomiti white marble countertops help set off their subtle shade. eliminating the need for much backsplash. A large island with drawers for storage makes up for the lack of wall cabinetry, and the beaded inset cabinetry features relatively minimalist doors in a light shade called Stone Bluff, which complements the oak floors. “Since they have a busy family, we stayed away from true white cabinets and chose a taupe color instead,” says kitchen designer Mary Adams. “This helped to create a softer, less formal family space.” The honed Bianco Dolomiti white marble countertops help set off the subtle color of the cabinetry, and the island was designed to offer ample seating. “It needed to accommodate a minimum of four seats, and having seating that is not all in a row is much more welcoming,” says Adams. One of the couple’s favorite elements is the oversized zinc range hood, which was handmade in Portland by Rusted Puffin Metal Works. Since the kitchen is open to the living area, a paneled refrigerator was specified to blend in with the other cabinetry. The opposite end of the kitchen opens up to the dining room, which includes a hutch area and wet bar. Designing for a family with two young children included creating living spaces with large openings between them so everyone can feel connected even when in different areas, as well as creating distinct areas for play. A den on the first floor is where the TV lives and is a cozy place for the family to congregate. A daylight basement (made possible by the site’s natural drop in grade from front to back) offers a

playroom where Legos can be strewn, as well as an exercise area. Upstairs, the owners’ bedroom is situated along the rear of the house with a view of the backyard. The two (equally sized, of course) boys’ bedrooms in either gable are connected via a narrow, five-foot-wide Jack-and-Jill bathroom with a trough sink that follows the shape of the room. An in-law suite above the three-bay garage was added during construction and connects to the main part of the house. While the visual aesthetic was carefully considered, so too were the parts of the house not outwardly visible. Energy-efficient measures include exterior sheathing with rigid insulation that adds extra R-value to the walls. In addition, two- by six-inch walls with dense-pack cellulose create a more airtight system than fiberglass insulation, and an R60 ceiling was made possible by the truss roof. Outdoor spaces were also designed to fit the young family’s needs. Landscape architect Soren deNiord (who was brought on after the house was sited) created complementary outdoor areas, which include a dining spot, a kitchen garden, and a play space. “It was a difficult property with a lot of topography, so a lot of thought was put into creative grading solutions to gracefully transition the front and back of house,” says deNiord. The team made a formal gesture in the front with an ellipse-shaped lawn to define a front-of-house experience and create a gathering space.
