E DI T OR ’ S NO TE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEIDI KIRN
O
ne of my first jobs in media was working at the XO Group (formerly the Knot). You’d think the experience of covering weddings eight hours a day would somehow help in selecting which celebrations to feature, but it’s never an easy process. Maybe it’s because photographers are always improving or maybe it’s because many couples are increasingly incorporating unique-tothem traditions. Whatever it is, this is the fourth annual wedding guide I’ve worked on at Maine Media Collective, and the only thing I’m certain about when it comes to editing weddings is that every single one of them—even the ones that don’t appear here—are always tear-inducing beautiful.
When you’re faced with so much inspiration, it can be difficult to decide just what kind of wedding you actually want. This rang true when I read about how Jennifer and Parker originally wanted a venue directly on the coast, but quickly changed their minds when they visited the gardens and barn at Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport. Their wedding wound up being an elegant autumn affair (page 26). But perhaps your style tends to be bold and bright, as in Abigail and Noel’s wedding at the bride’s family home in Pittsfield (page 54), or maybe you’re looking for more of an upscale summer camp vibe, like Meredith and Aaron’s wedding at Linekin Bay Resort in Boothbay Harbor (page 92).
My own wedding combined an island ceremony with a Portland reception and involved complicated boat schedules and an answered prayer from the rain gods. And it’s a good thing that it was five years and one child ago, because otherwise I’d still be tearing out magazine pages and saving them in a stone-gray linen binder.
Wherever your celebration takes place (inland or coastal), whatever theme you lean toward (summer camp or rustic barn), whenever it is (summer or winter), this much is for sure: it will be beautiful. Congratulations!

hile attending a party with her roommates who were on the Boston College sailing team, Jennifer met Parker, who was also on the team. Within weeks they were a couple. Eight years later, while vacationing in Portland, the couple decided to have a picnic on Peaks Island. They found some passersby to take their picture as they posed on a rock in front of the water, when suddenly, Parker got down on one knee and proposed with a diamond and sapphire ring handmade by his longtime family friend. The couple wanted a beautiful outdoor location where guests could witness the fall foliage and found the perfect spot in Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport. Following a first look on Goose Rocks Beach, the ceremony included Parker’s mother playing music, two of their closest friends doing readings, and their fathers carrying the wedding bands. “I wish I could re-live that day all over,” says Jennifer. “It was truly the best day.”
28
Autumnal Elegance Herb Toss: Instead of the traditional rice toss, florist Flora Fauna created a dried herb station, with each herb representing a virtue, such as chamomile for patience, lavender for devotion, and rose for love. Guests created their own mixture to shower on the newlyweds after the ceremony. “Although most of the herbs landed down my dress and got stuck in my hair, it was so much fun for everyone, and we have a great photo of that moment,” says Jennifer. Location: While the couple were originally looking for a venue directly on the water, they fell in love with Hidden Pond. “The atmosphere is so peaceful—relaxing but also luxurious,” says Jennifer. “The property is beautiful with gardens surrounded by birch trees, and the barn felt so intimate and cozy. The incredible, farmfresh food from Earth is from local vendors and the Hidden Pond gardens.” Rings: Parker’s wedding band is his greatgrandfather’s gold band with the wedding date of February 25, 1895 engraved inside, while Jennifer’s engagement ring and band were handmade by Parker’s friend Joey Modica of Thursday-Born Natural Jewelry.

s sophomores at the University of Richmond in Virginia, Maddy and John became friends first, and then it turned into something more. They even stayed together when life split them across continents. During a trip to Prouts Neck, where Maddy’s family has vacationed for generations, John invited Maddy to watch the sunset at Checkley Point before dinner with her family. As Maddy turned to walk into the house, John got down on one knee and proposed. As their wedding day approached, Maddy and John planned a menu that reflected their favorite regional specialties—John is from the South while Maddy is from Maine—as well as a day that involved both their families and friends. John’s family minister officiated, a friend designed the wedding logo, and Maddy’s mother made the cloth napkins by hand. To remember family members who had already passed on, the pair incorporated John’s late mother’s favorite flowers into the decor, and Maddy wore earrings and a bracelet that had belonged to her grandmother.

FAMILY FIRST LOCATION: The ceremony was held at Scarborough’s Saint James Episcopal Church, where Maddy had been baptized. Afterward, guests gathered at a nearby private club where the couple loves to play tennis and take friends out on the golf course. FIRST DANCE: Maddy and John first heard Soul City Band perform at Boston’s Summer in the City series. Although it was not on their set list, the band learned James Taylor’s “Carolina in My Mind” to play as the first dance.
MENU: Playing on a fusion of Southern and Maine culture, Dandelion Catering Co. paired local oysters with shrimp and grits, and guests sipped Kentucky bourbon along with Maine beer. FIRST LOOK: On the day of the ceremony, the couple first glimpsed each other in wedding attire on the same rocky beach where John had proposed.

fter spying each other at the movies one night in Puerto Rico in 2008, Abigail and Noel officially met—and became a couple— the following evening when fate brought them together again, this time while they were each out dancing with friends. “I know it sounds cheesy, but we really did fall in love in a few days,” says Abigail. Seven years later, the couple got engaged while watching the sunset in Sardinia. There was no big proposal moment— rather, it was a thoughtful conversation between the two of them. “We decided to have a giant party with our friends and family to celebrate this huge love,” she says. “It felt important to have a ceremony where we said vows of love and commitment out loud for everyone to hear.” Held at Abigail’s family home in Pittsfield, the overcast day created “a romantic vibe that carried us into a night of dancing,” she says. Because it was a backyard country wedding, the couple wanted their guests to feel welcome and comfortable while also being surrounded by beauty. With pops of bold color, handmade personal touches such as custom-printed matchboxes, and all of their favorite foods—lobster rolls, fried chicken, and biscuits—the wedding suited them to a T. “It felt like us,” says Abigail. “Fun and colorful and not at all stuffy.”
BOLD & BRIGHT COLOR PALETTE: “We love color,” says Abigail of their fuchsia, pink, orange, and gold combination. Abigail’s mother worked all summer to plant flowers, including dahlias “the size of dinner plates,” in the gardens that served as a bold, natural backdrop to the ceremony. DECOR: The couple had a “Cheech and Chong meet Beyoncé” theme. Decor included table runners sewn from African fabrics and pink, orange, and gold lanterns. GLOW GETTERS: Abigail designed and printed the sparkler holders and matchbooks that were at each guest’s place setting. DINNER: The couple served fried chicken, lobster rolls, biscuits, tomato salad, and corn. “Late summer produce in Maine is hard to top, and our caterer, the Last Unicorn, made sure that our guests were full and satisfied,” says Abigail.

allie and Harrison met on their first day of college and began dating a couple of months later, remaining together as both attended graduate school. After Callie received her master’s degree, she celebrated with her family on a trip to Paris. Unbeknownst to her, Harrison also made the trip, and on a walk to visit the Eiffel Tower, he suddenly appeared, getting down on one knee and surprising her with an heirloom ring. The couple decided on Maine as their location because they had both spent time here as children, they wanted a destination spot for family and friends, and they liked that it was a special place they could visit together in the future. They found the right venue in the seaside Chebeague Island Inn, where guests enjoyed a welcome party, live music, golf, and beach time. The decor featured a soft, neutral palette and a casual yet elevated garden party feel with lawn games. Everyone danced the night away to live music before the couple made their grand exit. “One of our favorite memories is running off at the end of the night through a sea of sparklers, says Callie.
68
SEASIDE CHARM VENUE: “The Chebeague Island Inn offers quintessential seaside charm,” says Callie, who notes its water views, wrap-around porch, easy beach access, boutique accommodations, and locally focused menu. COLORS: A soft, neutral palette complemented the surrounding landscape and the architecture of the property. “We fell in love with the 1920s charm of the yellow inn coupled with the lush grounds, and really used this as the basis for creating a palette that would work with the natural beauty of the property,” says Callie. CAKE: Cake Elizabeth created a lemon cake with blueberry frosting, filled with lemon custard and fresh blueberry compote between the layers. “We have friends that still talk about the cake to this day!” she says.
LAWN GAMES: The groom’s parents
handmade the corn hole boards that were set up on the inn’s large oceanside lawn.

even years ago, Jen was working as a development executive at Oxygen in Los Angeles, which hired Andrew’s video content company, SpinTheVerb Productions, for a special project. On the morning that Jen and Andrew had planned on meeting in New York City, Jen felt sick, and she asked Andrew to meet her fifteen minutes later than originally planned. (Every year since, Jen resends Andrew that email.) After seeing each other at work events for the next few weeks, they kissed at a restaurant in Venice. Five years later, Andrew stopped the car at a lookout spot in Malibu Hills overlooking a valley and proposed. The couple threw a small wedding at the Pot and Kettle Club on Mount Desert Island, complete with DIY touches such as handpainted table signs named after their favorite restaurants in New York and Los Angeles. Another special touch? Andrew’s father married them under the same arbor where he and Andrew’s stepmother were married years earlier.
82
DIY GLAMOR REHEARSAL DINNER: Held at College of the Atlantic, where Andrew’s father is a professor, a lobster bake took place under an arch decorated with strings of cafe lights. Jen’s sister made the lobster print aprons stating “Mrs.” and “Mr.” for the bride and groom. Andrew’s mother spent the day before the rehearsal collecting wild flowers for the decor. DECOR: Jen’s sister crafted signs, including one for the preceremony champagne and water that read, “Grab a drink, find a spot, we’ll be out soon to tie the knot!” On each table, she placed numbered wine bottles, in which guests could slip in written notes to be opened on future anniversaries. Cotton muslin welcome bags featured a Mount Desert Island outline with a heart marking the location of their wedding, and a smaller bag, filled with mini liquor bottles, was stamped with the phrase, “I regret nothing.” JEWELRY: Jen asked the same jewelry designer who designed her engagement ring to create two solitaire diamond necklaces using stones from one of her late grandmother’s rings and had each clasp engraved with her grandmother’s nickname. At the wedding venue, Jen presented her sisters with the necklaces.

Meredith & Aaron September 24, 2016 Linekin Bay Resort in Boothbay Harbor PHOTOGR APHY BY R ACHEL BUCKLE Y WEDDINGS

eredith and Aaron met as kids growing up in Maine, and over the years their families became intertwined. “His family became my family, and he became my best friend,” says Meredith. After years of dating, they drove out to Point Lookout Resort in Lincolnville to spend a long weekend in a cabin in the woods. In the midst of a snowstorm they hiked out to the top of a mountain, where Aaron got down on one knee. The couple wanted their wedding to be held in Maine with both the ocean and the woods as a backdrop; Linekin Bay Resort in Boothbay Harbor fulfilled both of those desires. All of the wedding events were held at the resort so guests weren’t rushed between locations. Everyone spent the weekend relaxing, as if they were at summer camp. On their wedding day, the couple awoke to a perfect Maine morning. “The sky was pink, there were no clouds in the sky, and it was warm but not too warm,” says Meredith. “We knew right then that our day was going to be exactly how we envisioned it.” Friends and family all helped contribute, with Aaron’s sister and Meredith’s best friend performing music and Meredith’s father doing the calligraphy for the place cards. As the couple gave their vows, Aaron surprised Meredith with a poem that he had written for her years earlier. “It reinforced how thoughtful he is, and why I fell in love with him in the first place,” says Meredith.

TIME TO REFLECT DESSERT: Instead of a traditional cake, the pair opted for a gelato cart by Gorgeous Gelato. LATE-NIGHT SNACK: At the end of the evening, guests lounged by the saltwater pool where there was a bonfire and snacked on grilled cheese and French fries. STOLEN MOMENT: Some of the best advice the couple says they received was to spend time alone after the ceremony to reflect and connect. Since they opted not to do a first look, the time after the ceremony was their opportunity to revel in the big moment after saying their “I do’s.”

“It was important to us to have our wedding in our home state of Maine. Linekin Bay was the perfect choice in all regards and has a very nostalgic Maine summer camp vibe that made everyone immediately relaxed and at ease. It was the perfect choice for the type of wedding we wanted.”—Meredith

enni grew up in Cape Elizabeth on the ocean. She first met Josh as a sophomore in high school. He was a senior and picked her up for their first date at her parents’ house. Although the couple now live in New York City, they decided to get married in her parents’ front yard, twelve years after their first date. “Some people grow up and grow apart,” says Jenni. “But we grew up and grew together.” Josh proposed at the couple’s favorite New York restaurant and, unbeknownst to Jenni, he had also booked flights to Maine so that they could celebrate the engagement with their families the following day. After a garden ceremony, guests danced in an outdoor room built by Leavitt and Parris that overlooked the ocean. Through the structure’s open sides and clear ceiling, “We could see the sun shining during the afternoon and the stars glowing at night,” says Jenni. Afterward, the group gathered for a bonfire at the beach, where they made s’mores and relaxed late into the night.
110
COASTAL VIEWS ATTIRE: Together Jenni and her friends created the “sisterhood of the traveling veil,” meaning that they each wear the same veil on their wedding days. Jenni was the fourth to don the veil, and as it was placed in her hair, it conjured up memories of each of her friends’ prior weddings. Attos Estate Jewelry in Portland crafted the custom rings and jewelry. CAKE: For dessert, the pair chose a naked cake, a style that features minimal frosting, baked and decorated by Cake Elizabeth. Sitting on a silver stand in front of the ocean view, the tiered champagne cake was topped with fresh raspberry coulis, cream cheese buttercream, assorted fruits, and fresh apricot glaze, while powdered sugar added color. DECOR: Reflecting the rocky Cape Elizabeth shore, Jenni and her mother worked with Meghan Torrieri at B Merry Events to create a coastal theme with a modern twist. Blue and white hues grounded the look, while geometric prints and toile designs, along with highlights of metallic silver and pops of pink, kept the look contemporary. The Event Light Pros created a wave pattern of light across the outdoor room’s floors that replicated the motif on the wedding invitations.
