o matter where they take place, weddings are magical. Of course the ocean has always been a draw for couples planning their celebrations, and with its historic architecture and vibrant food scene, our small, hospitable city by the sea is an especially attractive setting. Portland offers a wealth of venue options, from schooners and rehabbed brick warehouses to tented fields on offshore islands. Even our City Hall is stunning; couples married by the city clerk often pose for photos in front of the building’s elaborate wroughtiron gates or on its grand marble staircase. In this, our first Portland Wedding Issue, we bring you three distinctive, real weddings with the city in a starring or background role. Jenna and Peter invited family and friends for a nontraditional rehearsal dinner at Oxbow Brewing’s Washington Avenue tasting room, followed by a storybook wedding and reception on Great Diamond Island. Jaime and Brian got

dressed at the Press Hotel, and walked hand-inhand to the waterfront to join their guests for a ceremony aboard the schooner Bagheera as it sailed on Casco Bay. Mac and Mattie’s wedding day began in Portland before the couple and their wedding party headed to Pine Point Beach in Scarborough, where, like many Portlanders, they had spent childhood summer days. Once the date and venue are chosen, memorable weddings are all about the details. Photographer Nicole Wolf and I spent a fun morning at Cellardoor Winery at the Point—a beautiful space and a great choice for showers or rehearsal dinners—photographing products from local vendors for this issue’s Wedding Resource Guide (page 66). If you are planning a wedding, or have one in your future, I hope our recommendations will help and inspire you. In keeping with the theme, Dr. Lisa Belisle got to know DJ Jon for this month’s profile
(Party Starter, page 32), and food editor Karen Watterson visited Five Fifty-Five, whose elegant private room is often used for small weddings and related parties (Dine, page 22). For Insider Picks, we reached out to local wedding photographers, asking them to share their favorite photo spots. The best part about putting this issue together was looking through all the photos of the couples on their wedding days—seeing the joy and hope on their faces as they laughed, danced, and celebrated. Love may sometimes seem like magic, but there’s nothing more real.

STAFF NOTE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEIDI KIRN
I
’m sitting at my kitchen counter in Portland writing this letter and thinking one thing, “Holy mackerel, in three weeks my oldest daughter is getting married.” It’s an odd sensation. While I’m extraordinarily proud of Blake and madly in love with her fiancé and soon to be husband Nadav, I can’t help but think back on the days that led up to the one just ahead. How fast the years have flown by. How it’s such a privilege to watch your child become an adult whom you not only admire, but with whom you can’t wait to spend time. Blake and Nadav are temporarily living in Portland, Oregon, where Nadav is doing his fellowship as a pediatric oncologist and where Blake is an educator. But as someone who grew up in Maine, she knew the second she became engaged that she’d be making her vows here, in the state she loves as much as I do. When you get right down to it, Maine has a magnetic pull that so many of us take for granted. For Blake, it took moving away to another city—one my husband Byron and I have visited and enjoy immensely—to

understand just how incredibly fortunate we are to call this Portland and this verdant state home. As I look forward to the next few weeks of pre-wedding mayhem with last-minute wrinkles getting ironed out, coordinating details with Blake’s mom, Ellen, and sister Emma, scrambling to figure out how hubby, her stepsisters, and I will get all from point A to point B, I’m struck with a sense of pure joy. And it’s breathtaking. While the wedding isn’t being held in Portland, a lot of their friends and Nadav’s family have set aside time to spend a few days here because of what they’ve read, heard, and listened to Byron and I drone on about for countless hours: Portland, Maine, is an indescribably special city. And we’re blessed to live here. In case you’re wondering, the wedding will be held at Linekin Bay Resort in Boothbay Harbor, her photos will be taken by Matt Cosby, whose images have graced the pages and covers of our publications for years, and we will be dancing the night away to the jams thrown down by DJ Jon, who created the
famous 80s night at Bubba’s Sulky Lounge (and who is profiled by Dr. Lisa Belisle on page 32). Byron’s mom Eunice—who has a small bakery in Casco—is creating four different whoopie pies for the cake, and the happy couple will be married under a chuppa crafted especially for the big day by a longtime family friend who lives in the area. It truly is a team of people coming together in the name of love. And as you page through this inaugural Portland Wedding Issue of Old Port, I hope that you’ll dream it forward as you plan your wedding, or are part of the planning for someone you love. Because in the end it all comes down to this—live the life you love and love the fact that, as the years go by, you’ll never get tired of sharing the pure simplicity of love. With everyone you know. I wish you all joy for many years to come.

Fifteen years ago, Michelle and Steve Corry were among the first wave of restaurantowner couples to elevate the level of dining in Portland. As the city’s restaurant scene was beginning its ascent, they opened Five Fifty-Five, serving sophisticated American cuisine with finesse and providing exceptional service. Chef Steve Corry offered breakthrough dishes such as truffled lobster mac and cheese, combining Maine’s finest resource with a beloved comfort food. That dish and others, including his mussels with roasted garlic and pickled cherry peppers, and grilled Caesar salad, became signatures at Five Fifty-Five, attracting diners in search of originality and flavor. Over the following decade, dish by dish, the Corrys
built a solid reputation and loyal customer base. Steve Corry rarely works on the line at Five Fifty-Five any longer, choosing to spend most days at home with the couple’s two young sons. Chef de cuisine Kyle Robinson now heads up the tiny, open kitchen, and Michelle is grateful. “Hiring Kyle made a difference in our lifestyle,” she says. “It took Steve about six months to loosen the reins, but we trust Kyle fully. He and Steve are very similar,” Michelle continues. “They’re both pretty calm and mellow. It was a good transition, very respectful of each other.” Robinson, a Maine native, came to Five FiftyFive from the Little Nell, a luxury resort in Aspen. He was ready to make the switch to a
small, independent restaurant, and be closer to his family. Like Steve, Robinson is “fiercely seasonal,” adding and subtracting menu items according to what tastes and looks best right now. “I won’t touch the old favorites that Steve created,” he says. “But the seasons are so short here, we have to jump on using the ingredients immediately.” Last fall, the two chefs had some intense discussions about how to freshen up the menu while maintaining the restaurant’s identity. “We just wanted to make it more fun and casual,” Robinson says. Small plates were added, showcasing the best of each season with salads, pasta dishes, and seafood snacks, OCTOBER // 2017

THE ATMOSPHERE MAY FEEL MORE RELAXED THAN EVER BEFORE, BUT THE HIGH LEVEL OF SERVICE HAS NOT CHANGED ONE BIT. such as scallop ceviche and sockeye salmon rillettes. A summery bowl of chilled English pea and coconut soup with Maine crab, spiked with pickled carrots, was a recent feature. “We try to use flavors that are comfortable and approachable, but with our own touch,” says the chef. The five-course Signature Tasting menu is a delicious opportunity to taste both old favorites and seasonal additions, with the offerings changing frequently. When Robinson joined Five Fifty-Five, his wife, Yazmin Saraya, came along as well. The pastry chef has been a stellar addition to the team, contributing wildly creative, sophisticated desserts. They are as seasonal as the rest of the menu, making excellent use of local ingredients, such as the 24 OLD PORT

berry sorbet with Greek yogurt semifreddo and blueberry meringue. Chocolate is well represented too, with offerings of “summer s’mores” and sea salt caramels. Saraya also bakes traditional French pastries for Petite Jacqueline, the Corrys’ French bistro in the Old Port. These changes, and others, are part of the Corrys’ effort to remain relevant in an increasingly crowded Portland restaurant scene. “We try to make a change every year,” says Michelle. Two years ago, they renovated a third-floor loft-like space so that it can be used for private events, and the calendar has filled up with rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, corporate meetings, and holiday get-togethers.

Opposite page, from top: The private dining room on the third floor can be arranged to suit a variety of gatherings, from rehearsal dinners to corporate meetings. In addition to an award-winning wine list, inventive cocktails include the Basil Smash. This page, from top: Five Fifty-Five owners Michelle and Steve Corry with chef Kyle Robinson, left, who has taken over most of the cooking duties. New England scallops have been a menu favorite from the beginning; the preparation changes with the seasons.
The room has a stylish, industrial-chic look with copper wainscoting, heavily varnished rustic wood tables on casters—for flexible setups—and tall windows overlooking Congress Street. “I wish we had done this sooner,” says Michelle. “It’s used all the time.” This year, new tabletops made of ceramic tile with copper trim were installed in the main dining area, giving the room a more contemporary and casual look. While Five Fifty-Five is often considered to be a special-occasion restaurant, the Corrys want diners to feel welcome at all times. “There’s no dress code,” says Michelle. “No pretension.” Some choose to dine in the comfortable bar area, where the entire menu is available. The atmosphere may feel more relaxed than ever before, but the high level of service has not changed one bit. Before coming to Maine, Michelle Corry worked at the world-renowned French Laundry restaurant in Napa Valley. She trains the staff to serve with skill, knowledge, and warmth. “We run it like a fine-dining establishment. If you work for me for a year, you can work anywhere in the world,” she says. Like the dining experience, the wine list has a full variety of options, at a wide range of price points. “People in the Northeast are priceconscious,” Michelle says. “We’re very cognizant of that.” Michelle has worked hard to bring the wine program to the next level, with a focus on staff training, earning the restaurant a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence title. The list is heavy on California and French labels, a good match for Robinson’s menu. “Fifteen years went by in a hot second,” says Michelle. “The city has changed so much.” But Five Fifty-Five has built a dedicated following, and with a constant refresh, is very much in the game. our sister just married the love of her life. You cried through the ceremony, and smiled through your father’s toast. You hugged a hundred relatives—even the ones you had never met before. Then the lights go down, and a thumping beat overtakes the chatter of the crowd. Your toe starts to tap, and soon you are shimmying your way to the dance floor—along with all the others, young and old, who have gathered to mark the big day. “Music is the one thing that hits people on an emotional level first. It cuts through everything else,” says DJ Jon (aka Jon Hawkins), a sound-mixing artist who has been part of the Maine music scene for more than two decades. “I’ve found if you go into a room and you play something funny or interesting or both, that’s how you can change the whole course of how the evening is going to go.”
"MUSIC IS THE O N E T H I N G T H AT HITS PEOPLE ON AN EMOTIONAL L E V E L F I R S T. " DJ Jon had an early interest in music. “I was one of those kids that if I heard something on the radio, I could play it on the piano. Just by listening to it,” he says. Originally from Tokyo, DJ Jon moved to Washington, D.C., in 1980 so that his parents could pursue teaching careers. At the tender age of 11, he became intrigued by newly emerging genres. “I saw
break dancing and I saw hip-hop,” he says. “I saw people spinning on their heads. I was a little kid so it was the perfect age for that to captivate me.” Soon after, DJ Jon acquired some rudimentary equipment and began mixing sounds. “My uncle bought me a horrible mixer and I stole my sister’s turntable that had the cassette and the radio in the front. It skipped if you looked at it, so I had to figure out how to do stuff with that and a couple of cassette decks,” he says. “When I got actual real gear, I felt like Superman.” DJ Jon graduated from high school in 1989 and moved to Maine five years later to attend the University of Southern Maine in Portland. He settled in the city and continued to gain

practical experience by working in his field. At the time, there were few educational programs in this area. “I used the mixing skills that I learned with hip-hop to play other genres of music,” says DJ Jon. “A lot of the stuff is about blending, about finding interesting transitions, paying attention to key.” Although institutions like Berklee College of Music in Boston now teach courses in “The Art of Mixing,” and “Mixing and Mastering for the Electronic Musician,” having a good ear can be just as important as studying for a relevant degree. “I’ve been approached a lot about

teaching DJ classes,” says DJ Jon, who has worked as a sound engineer at The Studio on Casco Street in Portland. “I could teach some things, but some things you can’t teach, like taste. You’re kind of on your own. Some people just have a knack for the songs that are going to get through to people. I don’t know how.” DJ Jon says that his own favorite DJs are the ones who can help him experience a song in a new way. “Mickey” by Toni Basil is one example. “The drums in that are so crazy,” he says. “If you just think of it like a cheer record, it’s just like yeah, yeah whatever. But if you just listen to how good the drums sound, that song’s incredible.”
With more than 50,000 songs in his repertoire, DJ Jon spins the tunes for “Retro Night with DJ Jon” every Thursday at Aura in Portland. He says that this type of “club residence” is a good way to test new material on different types of audiences. “You don’t have to be tied to one genre,” he says. “I’ll throw Elvis Presley in and then mix it with Taylor Swift. It brings everybody together.” On Friday nights, he takes to the radio airwaves for Hot 104.7 FM. “Our throwbacks are the Kanye West and Jay Z songs,” he says. “It’s a younger demographic. So, that keeps me sharp on what’s happening there.”

The founder of Event Mix DJ, he enjoys offering his unique brand of artistry at special occasions like weddings. “I definitely am there to rock the house,” says DJ Jon. “People are there for the party, you know? They’ll dance to whatever.” He likes the challenge of creating playlists that will cause people to feel like celebrating—and maybe broaden their horizons in the process. “The whole thing is about getting your grandma to dance to Big
Sean,” he says. “That’s my goal.” Watching DJ Jon perform in front of an audience, one can still see shadows of the kid who fell in love with hip-hop in the 1980s. Sadly, he no longer break dances. “I got a bad hip,” he says. “If I tried doing it now, I would hurt myself.” Hear more from DJ Jon on Love Maine Radio with Dr. Lisa Belisle. lovemaineradio.com

he line for the ferry began early on the day that Peter Belisle and Jenna Kelly got married at Diamond’s Edge Restaurant and Marina. Men wearing bowties and women in party dresses found seats next to island homeowners and their leashed pooches. Although the sun was shining, ominous clouds were gathering in the distance as the festive crowd disembarked on Great Diamond Island. Great Diamond is a short boat trip from the coastal Maine town in which my nine younger siblings and I grew up, and just north of South Portland and Biddeford, where my parents were raised. My youngest brother, Peter, was born when I was 16—the fall of my final year at Yarmouth High School. Referencing the Latin she had learned as part of her Catholic school education, my mother called me and Peter “Alpha and Omega.” My little blond brother and I bonded over Disney movies during my college vacations. At the age of six, Peter became an uncle to my son, Campbell, who was born in my second year of medical school. From the beginning, Peter had a strong internal sense of direction. He was the only Belisle sibling who did not graduate from Yarmouth High School—transferring to Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts during his sophomore year. He went on to attend Stanford University in California, and graduated with a degree in engineering. Similarly intelligent and motivated, Jenna also happens to be the youngest in her family, with a brother and a sister who are many years her senior. She grew up in Winchester, Massachusetts, and graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., before getting a job with Google in Mountain View, California. She returned East to get her master’s degree in business administration at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in Philadelphia. Jenna and Peter met on November 16, 2013, at the home of mutual friends, Anne and Ogi Zivojnovic, in San Francisco. Peter, who had been working in the financial field in San Francisco, had been thinking about going back to school for his MBA. They began a long-distance relationship and learned that they shared a love of travel and cooking. Jenna developed a fondness for Peter’s cat, Woogie. In 2014, Peter moved to Philadelphia to join Jenna at the Wharton School. Peter proposed to Jenna during Labor Day weekend of 2015. They were visiting Chatham, Massachusetts, with Jenna’s family, and started out on their regular morning run. They ended up at the Town Landing Beach—a location that Peter had selected. “Sweaty from the run, frizzy from the sea spray, doing something we do all the time, it was the perfect setting to agree that our

futures are together,” says Jenna. Peter knew that he wanted to get married in his home state of Maine, and Jenna readily agreed. “We wanted it to be relaxing, fun, and a beautiful day on the water with everyone we care about,” says Jenna. They chose Oxbow Brewing in Portland for their rehearsal gathering, and arranged for guests to stay at the Westin Portland Harborview hotel across town. My sisters (Amy, Adelle, Emily, and Sarah) and I gave Jenna a Sea Bag, made from a recycled Maine sail, with their wedding date stitched upon it. That date—July 8, 2017—soon arrived. Walking up the golf cart path past the brick World War II-era buildings that make up the Diamond Cove restaurant complex, my daughters, Abby and Sophie, and I watched the sky darken and cast shadows upon the nearby pond. The ushers handed out plastic ponchos. Scattered drops of rain fell upon the guests who had settled on the white folding chairs. We waited apprehensively, wondering if the ceremony might be completed before the weather changed. Nature gave us her answer, sending torrents of rain over the crowd within minutes. Peter and Jenna, who had been hiding in the reception tent, appeared, and told us to run toward them—quickly. Jenna held the hem of her sleeveless gown by Leanne Marshall above the mud. The significant man in my life, Kevin Thomas, helped to tie the tent flaps down as the guests enjoyed an impromptu pre-wedding cocktail hour. Then, as quickly as it had arisen, the storm was gone. The sun came out, and we wiped the water from the white folding chairs. My brothers—Jeff, Matt, John, and Brian—lined up under the evergreens with the other members of the wedding party as steam rose from the pond. My parents, Mary and Charlie, walked Peter down the grassy aisle. Jenna soon followed, escorted by her father, her smile undimmed by the rain of a few moments before. The ceremony was eclectic and beautiful. A shore bird flew above the crowd, interrupting the readings with his call. Anne Zivojnovic gave a homily that was at once thoughtful and humorous. I wiped tears away as my baby brother—the kid I had once called “Petey Peaches”—exchanged vows with Jenna, and placed a ring on her finger. I noticed that he was crying, too. We celebrated their marriage at a reception and after-party that were replete with whimsical touches. We sat at tables labeled with names borrowed from Lord of the Rings—evidence of Peter’s wry brand of humor. We danced to

the band Wavelength, and watched Jenna’s six-year-old niece, Emma, perform “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake. Jenna’s father gave a toast, regaling us with tales of her childhood. Instead of wedding cake, we ate Maine potato donuts from the Holy Donut, while the children played lawn games under the birches. After the wedding, many of the guests joined Peter and Jenna for a boat ride on the Casco Bay Lines private charter boat, Bay Mist. Having gracefully weathered the storm of their wedding, Peter and Jenna are now living in Boston, ready to weather the larger storms that are inevitable in life. My family’s gift to them was a small painting by North Haven resident Eric Hopkins. We hope that Peter and Jenna will look at the little bit of blue sky he has created and remember their wedding day, and that life’s clouds, like rain, are only temporary.
WARMTH + WHIMSY LOCATION Peter wanted nothing more than to be married on the water in Maine. “It was hard to argue with that,” says Jenna. They perused the Maine Magazine wedding guide, Wed Maine, and consulted with editor-in-chief Rebecca Falzano (who had herself been married at Diamond’s Edge), before scouting for locations the following February. “Even on a bitterly cold winter day, we knew that Diamond’s Edge on Great Diamond Island was the perfect spot for an outdoor summer wedding as soon as we laid eyes on the site,” Jenna says.
CEREMONY Peter and Jenna were married by their good friend, Anne Zivojnovic. “She put together a document full of options and variations for us to review, knowing that customizing the ceremony was one of the things we cared most about,” says Jenna. The couple reworked the wording until it was right and felt like it belonged to them. “Anne’s homily and our vows, though, were a secret until the day of.”
BAND The summer before the wedding, Peter and Jenna went on a harbor cruise to get to know the Scarborough-based dance band Wavelength. “The boat was filled with bachelor parties, high school reunions, first dates, anniversary celebrations, and somehow the band managed to get everyone dancing,” says Jenna. “That was exactly what we wanted.”
THEME In the early days of wedding planning, Peter jokingly suggested that instead of numbers, the tables at the reception should be named after locations in Lord of the Rings. He stuck with it, and on wedding guests found themselves sitting at tables named “Bag End,” or “Buckleberry Ferry.” Jenna managed to slip in one location from the Harry Potter series. “To my knowledge, only two people figured out that the interloper was ‘Little Whinging,’” she says.

ntroduced by a mutual friend, Jaime and Brian hit it off right away and soon were spending as much time as they could together. “We didn’t do things the conventional way,” says Jaime. “We had our daughter, Ella, in 2015 and were married in 2016.” Brian proposed on Christmas Day, 10 days after Ella was born. “He placed the ring box on baby Ella and waited for me to discover it,” says Jaime. “The wait wasn’t long, some tears of joy were shed and a big ‘yes’ was yelled.” For their October wedding, Jaime and Brian decided on a “very intimate, elegant, and beautiful, but also simple” ceremony and reception with 20 family members and friends onboard the schooner Bagheera, operated by the Portland Schooner Company. “We live in Portland and love our city and wanted to be surrounded by the sea, the islands, and the city on our wedding day,” says Jaime. Following the two-hour sail, everyone headed to Salvage BBQ for a family-style dinner. “After dinner, we had a bunch of friends that couldn’t have fit on the boat join us at Novare Res for drinks,” says Brian. “So everything took place right here on or slightly east of the Portland peninsula.”
SETTING SAIL FOR LOVE LOCATION The couple stayed at the Press Hotel, where they dressed before walking to the waterfront for their wedding. “It was a very brisk and sunny October day as we walked from the hotel together arm in arm through the Old Port down to the Maine State Pier,” says Jaime. “To see everyone on the sailboat ready to sail away was quite the magical scene.”
INVITATIONS Having designed stationery for Vera Wang Fine Stationery and William Arthur Stationery, Jaime created the couple’s blue and white nautical-style invitations. The background was hand painted with a light wash of watercolor before being printed with the text and monogram. Jaime also designed and hand-cut the envelope liners, and calligraphed the addresses on the outer envelopes.
CEREMONY The wedding ceremony took place an hour into the sail, as the boat coasted along in a wind-sheltered spot on Casco Bay. “Our dear friend, Madeleine, married us,” says Jaime. “We wrote our own vows to share in this very intimate, romantic setting. Ella, who was 10 months old at the time, was also on the boat to witness this special day with us.”
FLOWERS AND DÉCOR Jaime purchased a variety of roses, eucalyptus, and calla lilies at Whole Foods to create her bouquet and the groom’s boutonniere. On board the boat, “the backdrop of the sea and the beautiful Bagheera schooner was really all we needed,” she says.

ackenzie—known as Mac—and Mattie met when they were both students at Cheverus High School, but they didn’t become a couple until Mattie graduated college and moved back to Portland, where Mac was a first-year student at the University of Maine School of Law. “Our first date was in December 2009 at Gritty McDuff’s, and we got to know each other taking advantage of all Maine has to offer—snowboarding at Sugarloaf or Sunday River, walking Pine Point or Higgins Beach, paddleboarding and surfing,” says Mattie. “In August 2010 we took a trip to San Francisco, Napa Valley, and Yosemite National Park where we felt alive, inspired, and connected. I think we would both agree this is where we fell in love.” On an April 2015 trip to Jamaica, Mattie was taking a photo of a sunset wedding being set up on the beach below the oceanfront balcony of their room. “When I turned around to point this out to Mac he grabbed my hands and dropped down on one knee saying the most touching things about our past and our future together,” she says. “Easiest ‘yes’ of my life.” They were married on Pine Point Beach, followed by a reception at The Landing at Pine Point. “Mac and I both felt an overwhelming amount of love and appreciation that everyone we loved was there to celebrate our love for each other,” says Mattie.
SEASIDE ROMANCE WELCOME PARTY
On the Thursday before the wedding, Mac and Mattie rented the Chebeague Island Inn and threw a “Welcome to Maine Lobster Bake.” “It was so fun having an intimate evening with some of our friends and family before the big day,” says Mattie. “We played corn hole on the front lawn, explored the island, soaked in the sunset and sunrise, and enjoyed each other’s company.”
COLORS
The ocean inspired the couple’s choice of colors for their wedding, including seafoam green for the bridesmaids’ dresses, navy suits for the groomsmen, and a marina blue suit for the groom—all from J. Crew. The rugosa roses that grow along the beach inspired the colors for the centerpieces created by Flora Fauna.
LOCATION
Following their wedding ceremony on the beach, Mac and Mattie’s reception was held at The Landing at Pine Point. “I worked there for two summers during college helping couples plan and execute their weddings,” says Mattie. “My dad is a co-owner of The Landing so choosing it as our venue was a no-brainer for us.”
MUSIC
Mac and Mattie’s first dance together as husband and wife was to “The Shape of Us,” by Ian Britt, played acoustically by Sam Chase of Sam Chase Music—“our very talented friend,” says Mattie. “Some of our favorite memories have to be exchanging our vows on the beach with the sound of the ocean behind us, our first dance together as husband and wife, and dancing the night away with our friends and families.”

Sea Bags/Chart Metalworks 25 Custom House Wharf, Portland 207.780.0744 seabags.com
Made from real, recycled sails in a workshop on a Portland wharf, Sea Bags are a thoroughly Maine gift, crafted by hand and loaded with character. To create the guest book tote, wedding guests sign the interior sail material, which is then used to make up the bag. Chart Metalworks designs are handmade on the same wharf from real maps and charts, and can be customized for any location worldwide.

The islands of Casco Bay are magical. Easily accessible by ferry from Portland, each has an identity of its own. On Cushing’s Island, residents wander paths that meander through landscapes designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, who was hired in the late 1800s when the island’s thenowner envisioned it as a planned summer colony. This circa 1900 brick officer’s quarters offers a rare opportunity to own not just a home on Cushing’s, but also a piece of its history. The four bedroom, two-and-a-half bath house was completely
rebuilt in 1990. New plumbing, wiring, windows, and kitchen and bath updates add modern livability, while the original fir floors, pocket doors, built-ins, and wainscoting maintain the home’s period charm. The large open kitchen has French doors leading to a spacious deck overlooking gardens, stone walls, and fields. The beach, dock and tennis courts are just a short walk away from this special island home, which invites you to experience life at a slower pace.

What are your favorite Greater Portland locations for wedding photos?

“My favorite spots for wedding portraits are on a schooner in Casco Bay and East End Beach.” —Tim Greenway, Tim Greenway Photography timgreenway.com
“I love the park underneath the Casco Bay Bridge. There’s a little beach, little docks, and great views of Portland.” —Leah Fisher Arsenault, Leah Fisher Photography leahfisher.com

“A beautiful space that is very surprising is the Wilde Memorial Chapel and Evergreen Cemetery. The stone church offers stunning texture and architecture in the photos, and the cemetery is very large with great light and trees. With good angles you wouldn’t know where you are.” —Siobhan Bogle, Maine Tinker Photography themainetinker.com
“House Island in Casco Bay has so much potential in terms of wedding-day photographs as you have access to the whole private island, including the bunker/fort on the southern side.” —Rachel Buckley, Rachel Buckley Weddings rbuckleyphotography.com
“We love Custom House Wharf, with the Harbor Fish Market, as well as a wide variety of weathered and brightly colored clapboarded walls. And that vintage Coca-Cola sign at the Porthole adds interest and flavor.” —Liz Caron, Russell Caron Wedding Photography
