welcome
to the first edition of I Do for 2016! If you're getting married this year, your wedding preparations are probably already well underway. We hope to bring you some added inspiration or fresh ideas if you’ve just embarked on this journey. In the past, brides were after recreating royal or celebrity wedding looks straight off the TV or magazine pages. Nowadays, brides have become much more interested in walking down the aisle celebrating their own unique self. Take your time to make your wedding day about who you are as a couple, sharing your passions and desires. Long to short convertible wedding dresses will take you from ceremony chic, to the fun-loving afterparty, while soft drapes and bohemian cuts will be all the rage this year. Our fashion pages give you a mirage of options. Designed by Jesmond Sammut of Yesusdemaris, these exclusive gowns range from a vintage inspired ball gown (with a removable top skirt), to a chiffon dress with hand beaded French lace, an off-the-shoulder silk Mikado gown and a fashion forward trouser ensemble. Standing or seated receptions? 2016 will see some interesting layouts to make seated weddings less like conference events, all for a more intimate vibe. Dinner weddings will be making way for extravagant brunch weddings but on a smaller budget. As for standing weddings which seem to be more popular in Malta, professionally lit lounge areas complete with multiple seating options will continue to be part of the cocktail and after-party hours. Have you made yourself a nice cup of tea? Then sit back and take your time to flip through our fashion inspiration and read amazing stories selected just for you.

A TOAST TO new beginnings

M
ark was at his friend’s bachelor party when he locked his eyes with Stephanie’s for the first time, around four years ago. Although they do not believe in romantic clichés, they both admit theirs was love at first sight. “After meeting at a Paceville club, we spoke to each other on and off for six months. Studying for my Master Degree in counselling made it difficult to focus on a new relationship. Till this day Mark jokes that I was hard to get, but he won me over in the end!” Stephanie told I Do magazine. Getting married was something both Mark and Stephanie wanted. They decided together during a weekend break to celebrate Mark’s 29th birthday. “I felt extremely lucky that I was going to marry such a kind and gentle soul that I was absolutely in love with,” Stephanie added. Mark officially

proposed to Stephanie after spending one month abroad helping with a family emergency. On his return, Mark surprised his fiancée with an engagement ring at Dianne Josephine Bridal Couture shop where Stephanie worked part-time. Stephanie and Mark tied the knot on 23rd May last year and celebrated with an elegant Spring wedding symbolising new beginnings. The ceremony was held at Madonna ta’ Loreto Parish Church in Ghajnsielem, where the bride was brought up. Stephanie walked down the aisle wearing a gown designed by Dianne Josephine Bridal Couture. “Dianne helped me choose the beaded ivory French Chantilly lace. The dress had a fishtail fitted style made of lace from top to bottom with a two tiered lace skirt and a long train. I wanted something classic and elegant and Dianne definitely helped me achieve my vision.” The male wedding party wore stylish suits and shoes
hired from Cefai Formal Wear while the bridesmaids wore dusty pink gowns with a beaded lace bodice. The four flower girls looked like angels wearing matching dresses. An intimate reception for 200 people was held at Ta’ Frenc Restaurant. “We chose this venue for its reputation, excellent food and
personalised service. We wanted our guests to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, great music and excellent food. We also threw in a cocktail bar and the Powwow Station by Hush so our guests could take printed memories of our wedding day. Our guests were also given a hand cut crystal tea light
holder for souvenirs. After the cutting of the cake, traditional perlini were given. Say it with Flowers by Marisa Teuma, took care of decorating the church and the venue with flower arrangements using a dusty pink colour scheme and beaded French chantilly lace throughout.
I DO 19
The wedding invitations were designed and hand made by Stephanie’s mother Mary Cassar. “Keeping in line with the wedding theme we chose white embossed flowered paper, organza and silk ribbon along with a diamante broche embellishment. I must admit my mother was able to perfectly hand craft the wedding invitations beyond our expectations.”
20 I DO
Stephanie’s aunt also pitched in. “My uncle’s wife Anna owner of BCD printing designed the print layout for the wedding invitations, perlini souvenir tags and church booklets. She was extremely helpful throughout.” Stephanie and Mark visited the United States for their honeymoon. They made the bookings through KDM travel agency. “Mark and I always wanted a special honeymoon encompassing a relaxing, exotic, fun and unforgettable time. It was Mark’s dream to visit the United States and I am absolutely in love with the destination because I was born and raised in New York.
22 I DO
We decided on going to Miami, then on a Caribbean Cruise and finally New York City.” “We flew to Miami for a couple of days. There we enjoyed the beautiful weather, beaches and city life. Mark and I fell in love with the ambience in Miami and both of us would consider living there someday. It was very relaxing and beautiful! Then we went on a Caribbean Cruise on the largest cruise ship in the world, the Oasis of the Seas. We visited Haiti, Jamaica and Mexico. The cruise experience was absolutely astonishing. Apart from the beautiful and elegant restaurants, we also enjoyed the daily shows.
The cruise was an excellent way to visit many Caribbean countries in a short time. We even went snorkelling in Cozumel. We were lucky to see three large barracudas, a sting ray and a sea turtle. After the cruise we went to New York City. I wanted Mark to visit New York because I wanted him to meet my family there and also show him where my roots are. It meant a lot to me that Mark and I were able to share this experience. It enabled Mark to be closer to my fond memories of growing up in New York City. Mark and I spent a lot of time with my aunts, uncles and cousins. We will treasure our wedding day and honeymoon memories forever!”

onathan did his research through common friends before asking Donna out. This was certainly wise of him as had he not asked her to meet for a chat over a cup of tea, she would have refused! “I am a tea and teacup lover and collector
J
and he just hit the nail on the head with that suggestion,” Donna admits. “… We went on a date for an afternoon tea and we have been inseparable ever since”. Around a year later they bought a finished and partly furnished house and set the wedding date. Once alterations started, the
house ended up in an almost shell form with only one year and three months till the wedding day. There was no proposal and while Jonathan wanted to buy his wife-to-be a ring, she preferred spending the money on house renovations.
I DO 25
The 28th March happened to be both Donna’s and Jonathan’s parents’ wedding date and because this was quite a coincidence, they decided to start – what is now for them – a tradition. The wedding revolved around three letters: TLC as it had to be Traditional, Lavish and Classy. Donna says: “Many details included in our wedding were made or chosen by us with Tender, Loving Care, not to mention Teacups, Lace and Chandeliers!” She walked down the same aisle as her mother, at the Birżebbuġa Parish Church, 34 years later. It was raining on the day so she ran towards shelter before poising herself to meet her husband-to-be. Announcing the bride’s entry, Lucienne Cassar played the chimes and sang during mass. Donna and Jonathan chose Osborne Caterers’ and Villa Arrigo for the hall’s classic décor and white and light blue colour scheme which matched their wedding colours. Jonathan actually chose the light blue shade as he is a Lazio supporter. The hall’s interior was large
enough for the couple’s 500 guests. To top it all, Villa Arrigo has a beautiful teacup collection in which guests were served tea. Both the church and venue were decorated in white flowers and gypsophila to create a soft, dreamy effect. A large tea cup that can actually be used as a flower pot, replaced the guest book. Guests were asked to write wishes on tea bag shaped cards before placing them in the cup. Handmade lace candle holders decorated the bistro tables. Antonio Piscopo Wines & Spirits provided beverages on the day. Every detail and chosen location reflected the couple and their relationship – something people close to them could see. The pre-wedding photo shoot took place at Palazzo Capua, where they spent their first New Year together while their post-wedding was held in Donna’s father’s fields since they share many family moments there and the place holds a special meaning. They took on some DIY projects including the tea bag cards, part of the favours and the invitations and Jonathan helped out despite being busy with house renovation works.
I DO 27
Donna also tried to emulate details from her parents’ traditional wedding including her mother’s long veil, although hers had a more modern twist. Sharing details about her wedding gown she says: “The dress was actually the first one I put on and (I) could not leave Ivory and Co without it... I wanted a fitted and drop down corset; something not necessarily with sleeves but if it was strapless in one way or another the bolero had to camouflage”. The bust of the wedding dress was embroidered with Cornelli lace. It had a wave-shaped neckline, a gathered taffeta skirt with billowy tulle and embroidery and a mid-length train. She added the chapel
length veil with lace trimming matching the bolero. The dress had these specific requirements and the bolero was almost identical to the lace on the dress so she was totally comfortable with it. She so loved the bolero that she did not take it off for the whole wedding and guests actually thought it was a one piece dress. The groom’s bowtie classic black suit was rented from Bortex. Meanwhile, the two bridesmaids’ dresses and three flower girl’s dresses were purchased from La Gatta Boutique; as were the groom’s step mother’s gown and the witness’ gown. The couple danced to Ellie Goulding’s
‘Love me like you do’. The song was in fact released for the film ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ a few weeks before the wedding, solving their dilemma. They couldn’t really decide on a song until they heard this and thought its message was just perfect for them as a couple. While they did not set a budget, they chose things and services that were affordable and that did not break the bank. Donna advises that wedding goods and services tend to be very expensive and services that are the most expensive are not necessarily the best. They shopped around and chose quality over name and price. They had pull-out invitations: A white pocket with a circle cut-out from which you
could see their names and date. The inner part was a Z-fold paper with all the wedding details. Donna actually chose the font and wording herself. As souvenirs they gave out Puttinu Cares bookmarks following a donation they made. A twig pencil that could be also used as a keychain and to which they added a lace border, was given out as a small gift. And those who could make it to the bride’s or groom’s parents’ houses before the wedding were given homemade cookies baked by Donna’s sisterin-law, to be enjoyed with a cup of tea! The wedding rings are both in white gold. Donna’s is shiny and has twelve small encrusted diamonds representing the 12 months of the year. Jonathan’s ring is
mostly shiny with a groove and a matt lower part. Donna explains there were two main highlights during the wedding. The first was her immediate reaction when Jonathan placed the ring on her finger at the altar. She just pulled up her hand and showed it to all the guests at the ceremony who broke out in applause and cheer. Another special moment was the dance with her dad: “We danced to ‘Butterfly Kisses’ and he was sobbing throughout the whole dance. The guests all around us were crying their eyes out!” Sharing the best advice they received and quoting their wedding celebrant Donna says: “The wedding is a celebration of love. Do not
be shy during the wedding and show your love to each other. Do not be stiff but be yourselves…this is going to be the happiest day of your lives”. Another was from her childhood friend Bernice Bugeja whom she describes as “the fairy godmother of wedding planning”. She told
them this was THEIR day so whatever they said goes, and that they must be true to themselves and their style. Wedding traditions exist but ultimately it’s up to the couple to do what they love best. They honeymooned in Canada and America and went on a cruise in the Carabbean.

anita Dimech and Andrew Camilleri’s romance started when they were both just 17 years old. They had stopped dating for a while as they thought they were too young for a serious relationship but two years down the line, they became an item once again. Danita always knew Andrew was the one for her and Andrew felt she was the one he wanted to be with. Danita and Andrew told I Do magazine that their love grew day by day. Like any other couple they had their ups and down and till this day they fight like cats and dogs but they also make up quickly. The most important values in their relationship are respect, liberty and honesty. The teenage sweethearts decided to tie the
D
knot five years into their relationship after buying an apartment together. “The day we bought the apartment, was the day I married her,” Andrew said. Danita always wanted a dream wedding so she took charge of the situation and proposed to Andrew herself. “I dreamt of a proposal every single day, but no there wasn’t one. If I kept waiting we wouldn’t have been married today,” added Danita. Their dream wedding was possible thanks to their parent’s support. “They were more than happy to help us. We wouldn’t have made it without their support throughout the preparations for the wedding and on the big day,” Andrew said. The young couple tied the knot on 27 June 2015 and the theme for the wedding day was vintage. Danita’s mother Anna helped by
taking care of all the decorations at both the church and the venue, paying a lot of attention to detail. The guests received wedding invitations in the Maltese language and designed by Boo and Co . Instead of traditional souvenirs, Danita and Andrew gave a monetary donation to Puttinu Cares. A ceremony was held at Naxxar parish church. “Choosing the church was easy as we both grew up in Naxxar. The church has significance for both of us. This made the wedding ceremony evermore special,” Danita remarked. The bride recalls walking up the aisle on her father’s arm as the most emotional moment of the wedding. She wore a simple princess cut dress made from layers of seethrough material for a skirt and a bodice covered in pearls and golden rhinestones.
Danita’s mother and sister-in-law helped her choose the gown from Ivory and Co. The bridal look was completed with jewellery from Vascas of Naxxar and nails by the bride’s friend and colleague Darleen at Danita’s Nail House. The bridesmaid’s colourful vintage dresses in 1970’s style with lace capes, were made by Mary Grace Pisani of brand Fersani Fashion. The groom had his suit tailor made by Twanny Abela from Zabbar while the suits for the male wedding party were hired from The Knot. After the wedding mass, a reception for 540 people was held at Chateaux Buskett, offering a large open area with a dancefloor big enough for an after party. “With both of us being from Naxxar, our guests knew each other very well. They had a ball partying the night away in the company of people they grew up with,” Danita said. Brass house unit was hired to entertain the guests. The newly wedded couple chose Fabrizio Faniello’s song in Maltese Sa lahhar nifs for their first dance as newlyweds.
Elia Caterers were hired to take care of the food and drinks for the guests. Arnold at Audio System took care of lighting up the venue and the red carpet service. The newlyweds are planning to go on their much awaited honeymoon this month. “We didn’t go immediately after the

wedding because of the weather in the Philippines. We are doing a double honeymoon with two of our great friends who got married a week after us. We are doing all the arrangements ourselves helped by many friends who visited the Philippines before us.”

hantelle and Jason met at an online chatting room and never looked back after their first date. “We tied the knot seven years later surrounded by family and friends; people who throughout the various stages of our relationship meant so much and have done so much for us,” Chantelle says. The best moment of their day was in fact as
44 I DO
they held hands at the altar and exchanged vows. They chose St John the Baptist Rotunda Church in Xewkija and decided to get married a week after the village feast since they are both fond of this church and Jason volunteers as part of Kumitat Żgħażagħ Xewkin. At the time, the church was still decorated in traditional red damask. Floral designer Jason Curmi enhanced its décor with hydrangeas,
which among others, decorated the benches. JPR Rentals provided Red Carpet Service on the day. At the end of the wedding nuptial mass, two doves symbolising a new beginning, peace, love and serenity, were released. Chantelle and Jason chose Ta’ Frenċ Restaurant where they had dinner with their 250 guests: “The venue was chosen because it had all the ingredients that we were looking
for: excellent food, elegant atmosphere and amazing Gozitan surroundings”. Flower bouquets and candelabras on the guests tables made the venue look spectacular. Along with the church, the restaurant was booked three years before they tied the knot as they would not have had their wedding reception elsewhere. Chantelle continues that she surprised her husband with a slide show of photos depicting their love story, projected on a big screen just before their first dance. They swayed to Ivan Grech’s rendition of ‘My Neverland’ whilst fireworks lit the sky. This was another surprise from brothers Owen and Luke Zammit Haber and Charlon Buttigieg. Following a couple more songs by Ivan Grech, the floor was left to DJ Joe Spiteri
who did an amazing job in keeping the guests entertained. However they were not the only ones to create the magical and festive atmosphere. Jackson’s Pipe Band accompanied the bride as she left her parents’ home. It also performed as the bridal procession entered the church, when the couple emerged just after mass and as they arrived at Ta’ Frenċ Restaurant. Matthew B. Spiteri and Charles Calleja from Pinkish Line captured the best moments during their big day and Franklin Calleja took care of videography. Details made their wedding stand out, Chantelle and Jason believe. Their friend Valerio Hili designed a personalised logo and this was included on the wedding cake napkins and the invitations. Each of the five-tiers on their wedding cake represented a stage in their relationship. In addition to their dessert menu, they had hand-crafted edible trees filled with flavoured lollipops. Designed by Polidano Press, the invitations had two photos from the couple’s childhood with the question; ‘Guess who’s getting married?’ Another photo taken during the couple’s prewedding session was printed on the inside, along with the wedding details.
Resin figurines showing a couple in embrace, ordered from Exclusive Creations, were given out as souvenirs. When it came to choosing the perfect dress, Chantelle tried several before picking out ‘the one’. This was actually the first she had tried on: “As soon as I put it on for the second time, I realised it fit perfectly and said everything about me and even my character. It had an air of softness and elegance at the same time”. The dress was a strapless mermaid beaded gown dropping into an A-line, from Ivory and Co. It was complemented with lace shoes from the same outlet. Charlie’s Hair Salon and Francene Make-Up
48 I DO
enhanced the bride’s and the female bridal party’s looks on the day. A casual, light beige tuxedo from Cefai Formal Wear was chosen for the grooms’ men. Jason had a classic tuxedo in a slightly darker shade which was lightly embellished with satin. While describing the wedding bands, purchased from Classic Jewellers and which had their names and wedding date engraved on the inside, they share the eternal meaning of their wedding. The quote “My love for you is a journey, starting at forever, ending at never”, guides the couple in their relationship. They have
vouched to always remember that the essence of marriage is that it is a covenant, a commitment and a promise of a future together. In a word of advice to other couples, Chantelle and Jason suggest enjoying every second of the wedding day as it flies by! They thank all the people involved as thanks to them, this was truly the most beautiful day of their lives. On honeymoon, they enjoyed two days in Miami before boarding the cruise ship for the Western Caribbean on board of the Oasis of the Seas. To top it off, they visited Paris ‘the city of love’ for a few more days before returning home.
LET’S TALK bridal hair! Choosing the right bridal hair style is a big decision. With the wedding season in its full glory, CHRIS from MAF HAIRDRESSING will give some useful tips on what’s in for the Spring and Summer 2016 wedding season High Ballerina Buns While many brides are still loving the loose, romantic look, we’re also seeing more and more brides wearing their hair in more structured ballerina-inspired updos. We love how this style keeps the hair out of the face all night long! The Half Up Side Braid Braids are still one of our favorite wedding day hairstyles as there are virtually an endless amount of ways to style them! Bombshell Curls No matter the season, one bridal hairstyle that will withstand the test of time is beautiful, bombshell curls. It’s relaxed and natural, yet undoubtedly sexy. The Boho Updo If you’re looking for an updo that feels a bit more relaxed but still has an elegant feel.
The Maiden Braid For the bride wanting to mix up a half up half down hairstyle, try this center braid which meets in the middle. The result is a beautiful hairstyle fit for a maiden that’s sweet and slightly undone. The Sophisticated Updo Fall weddings tend to be more formal in nature, so a formal updo like this sophisticated style may be just what you’re looking for. The hair is wrapped around in twists to create the updo, resulting in a visually interesting hairstyle that’s elegant and refined. The Tousled Updo For an updo that’s loose and sexy, try this wavy tousled updo.by curling all of the hair, which will also add body to the style. Loosely pull the hair back, then leave a few strands to frame the face and add that touch of “undone” to the look.

ennis planned a weekend stay at a hotel for Jessica’s 21st birthday, which happened to be her lucky one. It didn’t cross her mind this was going to be so special but on Saturday he said they were picking up her parents who were joining them for dinner: “As soon as we arrived, I found his whole family and mine together with other relatives and friends waiting where they surprised me. Until that moment I still didn’t think that he was going to propose... we danced a bit, the music stopped and he dropped to one knee. He got out a ring and asked me the most awaited question to which obviously I

answered with a huge ‘Yes’. From that point forward we started planning our wedding”. Jessica and Dennis had been together for six years. Having met at a very young age, they grew to become the greatest friends and their characters complement each other very well. As the years passed, they bought a house and naturally moved towards their greatest step together. It was a wedding for 520 people. Palazzo Promontorio in Wardija was a quick choice as the couple loved it instantly. Lanterns decorated the stairs leading to the venue and LED balloons gave a romantic feel to the gazebo. The colour scheme for the day was based
on lilac and butterflies were incorporated throughout. Jessica and Dennis told their love story in photos. Besides the wedding cake, they also had a wishing tree decorated with butterflies. Flowers and butterfly confetti also decorated the tables. The proximity of the Burmarrad Parish Church to the venue worked wonders and many of their guests witnessed the exchange of vows. Decorations were kept very simple yet elegant with flowers and a red carpet inside and outside the church. Jessica wore an off the shoulder, A-line dress in light ivory. It had a beaded corset
and beaded motives throughout as well as a belt to accentuate the waistline. A long veil with lace trimming complemented the gown. Jessica admits that dress shopping wasn’t the easiest of tasks. After trying on several gowns, her mother suggested she tried on this particular gown which they saw on a catalogue at Alamango but she didn’t quite like it. Once she put it on, everyone agreed it was ‘the one’. Her mother, sister and aunt supported her throughout. The groom’s black tails, complete with an ivory waistcoat and bow, was rented from Bortex.

Dennis explains that Jessica was always more looking forward to getting married than he was but once they set the date, he got involved and at times he felt even more excited than her. He says: “The wedding was important as we celebrated our love but giving our words to each other during mass made our marriage even more relevant to me. In front of me I had my best friend, the woman who from that moment forward I called my wife”. The couple surprised their guests during the first dance. It started off with Celine Dion’s ‘Because you loved me’ to which they danced slowly. But the music soon

changed to ‘Bringing sexy back’, ‘I like to move it’, ‘The twist’, ‘YMCA’, ‘Eye of the tiger’, ‘Can’t touch this’, ‘We don’t need no education’, ‘Mr Roboto’, ‘Macarena’, ‘Thriller’ and’ Gangam Style’. Invitations were simple, classic and in neutral colours as they didn’t want to give away the colour scheme. The couple’s initials were designed on the front. For favours, they went for something practical and useful for their guests with the help of Denise from Kudos – wedding & party favours in Mosta. They declared their love with a set of two coasters made out of tempered glass with the word “LOVE”
finished with a freeform double heart design at the centre of the coaster. Kudos had a huge range of favours at very reasonable prices to select from along with many wedding accessories to complement their wedding. Both their wedding rings were a mix of white and yellow gold. The groom’s ring is mainly white matt gold with a fine wavy line going through the middle in yellow gold. The bride’s ring is made of two rings attached together – one in white and one in yellow gold with three diamonds at the front and set within the white gold ring. While planning their wedding, they got through many obstacles and the day
felt truly special when everything came together and things ran smoothly. Together they had come up with every little detail and idea. Family members helped out with things and the bridesmaids’ dresses amongst others. They feel that every part of the day was special in its own way. While guests loved the photo booth, Jessica and Dennis really had fun surprising them during their first dance and with the fireworks. It was funny to see guests carry their parents on the shoulders later on during the night. Most of all, they enjoyed having time for themselves, dancing and not being bothered by their photographer. Jessica is a panicky type and says the best advice she received was to let go and have fun no matter what happens. She was reminded about this very often and always managed to sort out whatever happened without much fuss. A summer holiday in America is next on the cards for Jessica and Dennis.
