Welcome to this winter’s issue of IDO. People often get reflective at the close of a year. We find ourselves reviewing the past and anticipating what might come next.

A wedding is very much an event where past traditions and dreams merge with exciting hopes for the future. In previous issues we highlighted engagements and planning, then all the things that make a perfect wedding. Now our focus is on the wishes of everyone who takes the plunge and gets married ‒ to live happily ever after.

For all couples, who have just got engaged, those who are newlywed, even everyone who is well settled into married life, the everyday demands of life are enormous. It has become too easy to be so wrapped up in trying to keep up that the two of you get overlooked.

So in this issue we look beyond the amazing wedding day towards keeping things in proportion and finding ways to keep the importance and joys of that day alive, despite all distractions.

And, naturally, we’re bringing you plenty of suggestions for how to do this, along with ideas for furnishing your home together, a perfect place to hide away, fabulous wedding and flowers girl dresses on our bridal fashion pages and spectacular wedding stories featuring Malta’s own celebrity couples.

Love never dies

QUITE A SWEEPING STATEMENT ISN'T IT? AND CERTAINLY THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO MAY STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH IT, FOR ANY NUMBER OF REASONS. BUT PERHAPS WHEN THE ACCENT IS FIRMLY ON THE WORD 'LOVE' IT'S REALLY VERY TRUE. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE LOVE.

Although over time, in different circumstances, its context is bound to change. So, what we eventually discover as the ‘love of a lifetime‘ is well defined by an English writer, born in Paris 150 years ago, who wrote:

“We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person.“

Is there any better way to describe how couples are able to survive whatever they go through together, no matter what?

How can we think we’ll never change? At whatever stage of our lives we marry, life cannot possibly be the same from the minute we sign on the dotted line. And we how could we expect it to be?

In fact, the happiest couples are the ones who are always on the lookout for the changes they will face, ensuring as far as possible that these are for the good. Then, when thingsdon’t turn out so well, they look for all the ways possible to adapt and support each other through whatever comes.

Obviously, we arequite determined we won’t ever turn intothe couples we know who seem to have become so busy and disconnected that we wonder how, or why, they are still together. And, there are those for whom some changes have been literally life changing but their world still revolves around each other.

Theyarethe lucky ones. It’s highly likely thatwhen they planned to marry they were already anticipatinghow things might change. But theyboth realised that they had foundsomeone whobelieved that their love was what counted most, and thatthey would never allow outside influences to destroy that one fact.

While changes and chances will always be there, love is like mercury. It can spread everywhere and fit into any shape it finds. In so many ways it is the most powerful of emotions.Every married couple very soon notices the changes, subtle and dynamic in how they see, feel and use its power as they go through life together.

Flexibility and adaptability, and enabling each other to use these emotions are the best ways to make sure that the love which led to the first steps to getting married willensure the marriage lasts. And not only lasts but continues to be adventurous, life enhancing and full of a love that never dies.

THE BRIDES IN OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.

As a dancer, our model LOTTE LA HAYE, brought a special beauty and grace to our fashion shoot

Where do you live?

Originally I come from the Netherlands but I have been living in Malta for three years now. My apartment in Floriana is on the top floor of an old building, it feels like my own peaceful bubble.

Where else would you like to live and why?

I would love to not live anywhere for a while! I really enjoy travelling and would like to spend a period of time living from my backpack. Not having a set house would give me the freedom to move from place to place, going wherever I want.

What is the happiest job or career you could have?

I am lucky enough to currently work my dream job. I am a dancer with the National dance company of Malta, ZfinMalta. Being a professional contemporary dancer and making a full time living out of that, has been something I wanted since I was a kid.

How do you like to relax?

By going out into nature. I love taking long walks along the coast.

Who are the people, and/or pets who make you happiest, and for what reasons?

All people close to me are equally important and make me happy. Whether we are laughing together or supporting each other in harder times, they are always there for me

What could the world do without? And what does it needs more of?

I find this a very loaded question, we are living in a very tumultuous time with people living in harsh and difficult situations, and there are many causes to fight for. I hope we all can find more kindness in our hearts for those in need as well as kindness towards our planet.

What are your thoughts on social media and what do you mostly use it for?

Social media is a great place to find inspiration in many different ways. I also use it to message friends I don’t get to see often, as they live all over the world. However it can also become a place in which you get lost, therefore I try to stay away from the more entertainment side of social media. There is plenty of art, culture, nature to see offline.

VILLA OVERHILLS Classic yet contemporary

What more could a couple want when they are looking for their perfect wedding venue? There are other things, of course, and we will come to them. But let's introduce the setting first.

Villa Overhills stands proudly on the hill top opposite GħarDalam, Malta’s oldest prehistoric site. And it’s only a stone’s throw away from Borġ in-Nadur

Prehistoric Complex. It also boasts the best all round panoramic views Malta has to offer, with WiedDalam to one side, Saint Lucian Tower and the beautiful blue sea to the other.

The villa, dating back to the late 19th-century, was taken over by Elia Caterers, who have restored the villa and its gardens to their former glory.

Now it is a spacious and impressive wedding reception venue, with beautifully kept gardens and mature trees.

Elia Caterers took meticulous care over the restoration process to ensure the villa’s soul was retained. By using a blend of contemporary elements and expertly highlighted old features, such as stone slabs (xorok) and stone corbels (kileb), these traditional elements seamlessly compliment the new modern infrastructure, which is at the heart of Villa Overhills. That is a state-ofthe-art open kitchen in keeping with Elia Caterers’ signature concept and philosophy.

And now we come to the important practical details needed to make your wedding dreams come true.

Villa Overhills offers a comprehensive customer centric experience for up to 1,150 guests, in a wide choice of formats.

Stunning surroundings include:

An outdoor pool area and an area with a retractable canopy, making it easier to extend outdoors or indoors

depending on weather conditions, gardens, terraces and country views, and a private bridal room for the couple.

A new conservatory bringing the outdoors indoors and an adaptable conceptual light design system

Fully equipped kitchens, fully air-conditioned internal spaces, free Wi-Fi, four main bars and a photo area.

This makes Villa Overhills truly a year-round venue. And full accessibility for persons with disability, complimentary private parking, a backup generator and even chairs, all go to ensure that Villa Overhills has everything to make it a truly magical backdrop for your special day.

Honeymooning, 21st century-style

The custom is derived from combining two old English words, ‘hony’, referring to honey and the sweetness of a new marriage, and ‘moone’, indicating that such a time could change, as quickly as the moon changes.

Centuries ago, in the 1400s, calendar time was based on moon cycles. At that time newlywed couples drank an alcoholic drink based on honey, during the first moon of their marriage. It is perhaps needless to mention that this beverage was said to be an aphrodisiac.

In 1791 a honeymoon started to be an actual holiday. A reference in a series of German folk stories where the newly-weds, according to the translation, “spent their honey-moon in Augspurg, in mutual happiness and innocent enjoyments, like the first human pair in the garden of Eden.”

Not all post wedding escapes were so idyllic. In the 19th century couples, English ones at least, set off on a sort of bridal package tour, which was spent travelling around visiting their friends and families who had not been able to make it to their wedding. Imagine that today!

And, gradually, announcements of upcoming weddings began to include a reference to where the happy couples spent their honeymoon. The terms ‘honeymooning and ‘the honeymoon period were used. Honeymoon suites appeared in hotels and guesthouses everywhere.

But the honeymoon holiday still remained closely associated with its original purpose of giving a couple time to recover from the hectic preparations for and excitement of the wedding, which is probably just as relevant today; and allowing them time to get to know each other, which is probably not.

What has also changed is that a couple’s ‘going away’ is no longer automatically the first stage of their honeymoon. It is quite usual now for couples to delay distant destination trips for some time after their wedding, either to balance their budget more efficiently, or to fit in with other commitments. They have become a way to conquer faraway places, or indulge in oncein-a-lifetime adventures, accompanied, of course by a fleet of followers on Instagram.

However you spend it, a honeymoon today is basically a happy period of time following a wedding. And who would want to lose that?

DO WE NEED HONEYMOONS TODAY? THE ORIGINAL REASONS FOR THIS TRADITIONAL BREAK AWAY HAVE LONG GONE.

Love you to the moon and back

A honeymoon on the moon could be possible by the end of this century.

Hotels in space are already being seen as more of a reality, than just a dream. And if this all seems like light years away now, remember that visiting another continent was a huge deal not all that long ago; never mind travelling half way round the world, as we can today. In that context travelling into space to celebrate the start of a lifetime together seems fair enough.

It is suggested that space travel will start up on a big scale by 2040. And an overnight hour stay in a space hotel will be available for something in the region of €6,000. There’s no way of knowing how much that will be worth allowing for inflation, perhaps it will only be only the equivalent of the cost of an ultra luxury stay somewhere exotic today.

But the burning question has to be asked. Will the moon still hold its romantic magic if it ever becomes just another honeymoon resort?

Your wedding feast

There is no need to mention how vital it is for food which is served at a wedding to be nothing short of perfect. Whatever you choose for your guests, and making that choice can be hard enough as it is, there are 101 important things to consider from allergies to zucchini. So, the first thing you must do is take your ideas to an expert.

AND, FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING THEIR WEDDING MENU, IDOIS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE EXECUTIVE CHEF FOR XARA CATERING AND XARA LODGE, ADRIAN BONELLO,WILLING TO SHARE HIS EXPERIENCE, SKILL, IMAGINATION AND ADVICE. SO WE ASKED...

ARE PARTICULAR TRENDS OR TRADITIONS FOR WEDDING MENUS STILL POPULAR, AND HOW CAN THEY BE UPDATED FOR COUPLES TODAY?

We tend to keep to classic dishes but give them a more modern twist. An example is our Braised Pork Cheek from our Flying Buffet; where the preparation remains traditional, using a home-cooking style but the Garnish and Presentation will be updated.

Over the years couples started requesting larger sized canapés, that was when we decided to introduce the ‘Flying buffet’‒ The flying buffet, also known as flying finger food or flying dinner, is a type of catering in which small portions of food are served on bar tables or trays by service staff.

We are constantly looking into creating new dishes for couples, to enhance their wedding celebration. A few years back we introduced the restaurant to wedding food stations; a concept where we take elements from our restaurants and adapt for guests at a wedding. An example is our Trattoria AD 1530 Pizza Station with live cooking and pizza making.

WHAT INFORMATION DOES A WEDDING CHEF NEED FROM COUPLES WHEN DISCUSSING THEIR WEDDING MENU?

Favourite cuisine: We specialise in a variety of international cuisines from all over the world. ◊ Wedding timings for food stations, cake cutting etc. ◊ average number of attendees ◊ dietaries ◊ after party ideas ◊ favourite flavour of wedding cake and design ◊ budget.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO DEVELOP THE SPECIAL SKILLS AND IDEAS A GOOD CHEF HAS WHEN CREATING A WEDDING FEAST?

When developing a menu, I take into consideration the skills and talents of my team. We try to create items as one, while looking into new trends but always keeping that timeless element. We update canapes, plates and stations by taking into account what clients are looking for. However, at the end of the day, creativity always takes over.

HEALTHY FOOD AND PARTICULAR FOOD TYPES AND DIETS ARE NOW A HUGE PART OF MANY PEOPLE’S EATING HABITS. HOW ARE YOU SEEING THIS REFLECTED IN A COUPLE’S CHOICE OF WEDDING MENU?

Dietary requests have increased. Menus are balanced, by taking into account most allergies. However, we still cater with specific menus for special clients upon request.

COUPLES, AND OR, THEIR GUESTS SOMETIMES STAY IN THEIR WEDDING HOTEL VENUE AROUND THE ACTUAL WEDDING CELEBRATIONS. ARE THERE WAYS A CHEF CAN EXTEND THEIR GREAT FOOD EXPERIENCE DURING THAT TIME?

We cater for all types of events, whether it is a gala dinner, reception, intimate dinners etc. For couples we have catered many events following the wedding day; such as brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, BBQ evening etc.; to spend time with close family and friends.

Happy anniversary Happy anniversary

A WEDDING, THE ACTUAL DAY AND THE EVENTS LINKED TO IT, IS SUCH A HUGE EVENT THAT IT TAKES OVER ALMOST EVERYTHING FOR AT LEAST THE YEAR IT TAKES PLACE. THERE ARE THE PHOTOS, VIDEOS, SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS AND, OF COURSE, A HONEYMOON, KEEPING EVERY DETAIL IN MIND. THE SHARED LINKS THE INSTANT REMINDERS, THE TIMED POP-UPS

Each year on, anniversaries bring memories which will be welcome whenever life takes directions you had hoped to avoid.

Their significance is great because they are a reminder of good times spent together and, as years go by, the triumphs you achieved when necessary. They are the spur to try new things and an opportunity to acknowledge the ups and downs you’ve faced together and that you are stronger because of them.

You deserve to be happy in the strength and depth of your relationship and build up personal, traditional ways of enjoying fulfilling the dreams you had on your wedding day.

Anniversaries don’t just tick off another year, they let us relive thetimes when love was beginning. They will show us, as we grow older, how shared experiences, good and bad increase our wisdom and strength, support our feelings of compassion and trust and bring us senses of triumph and achievement. No matter what else is going on in our lives they need to be celebrated. There’s nothing like finding a time and place to be just you two, looking back over your years together

and finding a special way to mark them.

Celebrations which share sentiments with family and friends are another thing. Parties, milestone gifts and holidays together are very special ways to celebrate each year of married life as it comes.

However it’s important to remember that how you do this should never be seen as a reflection ofthe strength of your relationship.

Couples who sail off on exotic cruisesmay be no more devoted than those snatching a long weekend in a romantic local hideaway. Some of the longest, happiest marriages are marked

in the simplest of ways, because just being together for so long means enough,as it is.

Over the years so much changes, families grow, people, places, work, leisure, for better and for worse. Our very way of life may have become something we had neveranticipated. And yet the love is as precious as we hoped it would be.

Wedding anniversariesshow that love, the real reason for being together in the first place, can last whatever our lives throw at it. Celebrating them shows the reality of that power.

To have and to hold

EVERY WEDDING CEREMONY HAS ONE IMPORTANT ITEM INCLUDED, THE VOWS A COUPLE MAKE TO EACH OTHER.

They may be traditional, based on official wording used for centuries or informal. Sometimes a couple write their own vows. However they are worded they are binding promises no one imagines they will ever break. Each following year, celebrating a wedding anniversary is a reminder of those promises. And if a certain year contains a special event or represents a significant number of years together, it’s natural to look for different ways to celebrate. An increasingly popular way of doing this is renewing your vows.

Vow renewals are a celebration of your married life, and can be held at any time during it. They may be linked to landmark happenings or events that have occurred, the number of years you’ve been married, anything from one to 60+ qualifies, or they can simply be a thanksgiving for the past and present, and in anticipation of the future.

Associating the event with certain occasions – like the birth of a child, or grandchild, a parents’ significant anniversary, any triumphs and achievements you experience as a couple, or just acknowledging

how your wedding has cemented your relationship for the future, are some of the reasons for honouring your life together with a reminder of the day it all began.

And the way you decide to renew your vows will influence how you would like your celebration to take place. Of course, planning this special event is a lot simpler than an actual wedding. There are no legally binding requirements. It can be as formal or informal as you like. Dress up with a crowd of friends and family, somewhere grand. Or keep it quiet, sentimental and secluded, just for yourselves and those closest to you.

We may be in the age of instant and mass communication. But if you Google the words ‘wedding vows’ and ‘renewal’ be prepared for all the suggestions, instructions, gushing sentiment and symbolism that you could expect from actual wedding planning pages.

Seriously, ignore most of them and do it your way. This is what it’s about after all.

You may want to compensate for what you missed the first time, dress the kids up as characters from Disney World to keep them on board and involved, or take the entire family to see the Northern Lights because you couldn’t make it on your honeymoon. Alternatively, you could even slip away alone, somewhere you can be just a couple again.

Keep focusing on what you’re renewing and why, then just enjoy it.

Memories

OLD & NEW

Marriage is all about memories. Niki Bedson, country sales manager at Cugo Gran Macina, suggests a perfect place to create some.

The IBB Hotel Palazzo Bettina, Malta,is a historic boutique hotel right in the heart of the Three Cities. Its unique environment is created by the thoroughly restored architectural details and the beautiful surrounding marina. The hotel is steeped in history and its restoration has been carried out with true passion. The boutique hotel, featuring 13 luxuriously furnished suites, combines ancient with modern, offering an optimal solution both for guests looking for a luxury historical dwelling with a certain flair, and those searching for an elegant, modern, and progressive solution.

The Palazzo dates back to the 17th century. It has a long and varied history serving as a residence for several distinguished individuals and families, in particular, Elizabeth Muscat Dorell (17411829), known as Lady Bettina, who also gave her name to the building.

The palazzo served as a British military hospital in the second half of the 19th century and finally, St Ġorġ Preca, a Maltese Catholic priest and the founder of the Society of Christian Doctrine as well as a Third Order Carmelite, also made use of the property as one of the seats for the Society of Christian Doctrine in the inter

war years. The property was split into tenements just before World War II and was somewhat damaged during the war, following which it remained disused for a long period. The renovation began in 2017.

At Palazzo Bettina we specialise in special occasions! We like to promote taking the time to slow down and enjoy important milestones. We take the time to ensure that every detail of your stay is tailored to your specific needs. We believe that the stay is not the most important part of your time at Palazzo Bettina, instead striving to make the entire time your with us a magical experience, and for this reason we are often entrusted to special stays commemorating anniversaries or vow renewals. Our property only has 13 rooms, and nestled on the Birgu waterfront provides an idyllic setting to celebrate not only your own love story, but even combining with other family members celebrating at the same time. Even though our property is an intimate one, our spacious rooms ensure privacy and luxury, and of course a beautiful space to get some rest after any festivities!

One of the first things you will notice when you enter Palazzo Bettina is the quiet and sense of peace and calm provided by the ancient walls of the Palazzo. Our

courtyard provides the perfect place to rest with a coffee in absolute tranquillity, and maybe finally catch up on that book you’ve been meaning to read. You can rest assured that everything down to the smallest details will be taken care of by us, every guest is always greeted by name and offered a small tour of our Palazzo so you can learn in person a little bit of the history of where you will be staying. Our panoramic rooftop pool and solarium offers unparalled views of the Grand Harbour Marina, and is the perfect place to unwind and catch some Maltese sun with a refreshing drink, served daily at the pool. Our location is about a three minute walk from the vibrant and bustling Birgu waterfront, where you can indulge in all kinds of local cuisine and experience the still authentic Maltese culture. Our 24hour reception team are on hand to suggest the perfect dinner location to celebrate a special occasion – and can take care of all the arrangements from making the reservation to organising the transfers. Fair points

YOU ARE PLANNING A WEDDING AND HARDLY KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN? A WEDDING FAIR IS CERTAINLY A GOOD PLACE TO START.

Finding somewhere to research all you will need for your wedding in one real setting, rather than scrolling up and down a tiny screen, till you are all but dizzy is a blessing. Everything is there, experts and suppliers under one roof. You see the true colours, feel the textures, taste the flavours and smell the scents.

But you need to plan carefully, make a well edited list, and take people you trust to get the best from a visit to a wedding fair. It might even be an idea to make more than one trip. Meanwhile, these few points will help you stay focused on exactly what you need to discover, and purchase, to make your wedding everything you want it to be.

Don’t try and do everything at once, you can always come back a second time. Check what stands there will be on the fair’s website and have a list of those you want to visit. Decide and stick to your basic budget, so you don’t get side-tracked. Take your colour swatches and mood-boards. When you arrive, study the floor plan, if there is one. Decide whether to visit certain specialist stands first or make your way round, ticking any you want to return to later.

Make sure your phone is fully charged, you will want to take lots of photos. Have some way of noting down the suppliers that impress you, so you can contact them for further information. But don’t be pressured by suppliers asking for your details to send you further information. You may find yourself loaded with spam and advertising you don’t want.

Dress for the part. It will be a long day, in a crowded area. Wear simple clothes, and comfortable shoes to cope with all the walking around. And don’t wear yourself out. Take a break for refreshments to keep your energy levels up, and time to access what you have seen and learned.

Take someone with you who you can trust to keep you focused and give you honest, practical advice; but still make it all fun. Who you choose depends on how closely they are involved with the wedding. Your mother and future mother-in-law may appreciate invitations to join you, or your best friend or another family member.

As for the groom, if he’s up for it fine. If it’s his idea of hell accept that this does not reflect his attitude to getting married or his love for you, only that, like so many men, he doesn’t do ‘shopping’.

Talk to the exhibitors who are as concerned about your wedding wishes as they are about making a sale. Their approach is a good indication of how well you would be able to get on if you were to choose them to be part of your celebrations.

Ask about deals, promotions, cancellation clauses and, very important, available dates, as well as prices, for any items or services you are interested in. Be prepared to make decisions on the spot if something comes up that is too good to miss, special offers included.

Finally, take advantage of any master classes and demonstrations for, makeup, hair styles and manicures for good ideas and techniques, not to mention samples. Back home go through all the items, information and the photos you collected and put them towards creating your dream wedding.

THE COUPLE

Sarah & David

30 June 2024

Sarah Zerafa, 29, a content creator and David Vella, 30, a pilot, were married in the Church of Our Lady of Victory, Valletta.

POPPING THE QUESTION

Sarah admits it might sound very cheesy and cliché, but with David it was truly love at first sight. “I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him from the first few dates.. I eventually got to know that Dave felt the same way too. We used to speak about marriage from the very beginning, and knew that would be the end goal for us. Five years later, here we are”, she says.

Their theme was black, white and gold. Timeless, chic, romanticand very Bridgerton inspired. After endless meetings with TEMA, their wedding organiser, the couple finally came up with a super cool and original concept. Their wedding invitations were all in handmade boxes, black and white, with a 3D white rose. For souvenirs they wanted to combine both their professions, so they come up with travel-size perfume bottles, with ‘his and hers’ scents which they created together. “This turned out to be such a great idea. Our guests kept sending us videos of themselves using our perfume and encouraging us to put it on the market so they can buy more, haha”, Sarah remembers.

A SPECIAL AND EMOTIONAL CEREMONY

The couple’s choice of church was easy. “We always walked past the church of 0ur Lady of Victory,in Valletta, and admired how beautiful it is so that was an easy pick for us”, they explained. “The wedding ceremony was so emotional and special! There wasn’t one dry eye in the church.”

At the entrance Cliff Zammit Stevens sang Ave Maria AndJasmine Abela sang for rest of the Mass: »

» “All of our friends and family managed to come to witness the Mass, the church was packed. We left an empty seat right in the front for Dave’s late mother, with a flower from my wedding bouquet on it”, they added.

Sarah chose an absolutely gorgeous WeddingBells ball gown for the church ceremony, and carried a bouquet of white peonies, her favourite flowers, beautifully created by TEMA who understood her vision perfectly.

David‘schoice –a classic tailor-made tux and shoes for the church and a white blazer, to compliment Sarah’s pink wedding dress, for the reception, were from Bortex, who also dressed his wedding party.

The couple exchanged classic rings, a gold wedding ring for David with their wedding date engraved inside, and a silver one for Sarah to match her engagement ring.

After the Mass Sarah and David organised a shuttle service for the guests who attended, and they all loved it! And while their guests were heading to the venue David and Sarah went on a short ride around Valletta in a beautiful white vintage car. “We asked our wedding photographer to join us in this car ride, so he could take photos through it all’’, they remembered. »

A FOOD FAIR IN A FAIRY-TALE GARDEN

» For their reception David and Sarahopted for something different, and near their Valletta church. “We wanted a garden feel and Argotti fitted our vision perfectly! TEMA took care of all the flowers and decor and transformed this garden venue into a fairy-tale. Bridgeton movie set. For both of them:“It didn’t feel real...It truly felt like we were in a movie.”

They also wanted a different style of catering, so they opted for a ‘self-service’ catering menu, where they had six food stations, and guests were able to go and have their favourite dishes. There was a Maltese station, a sushi station, pasta station, taco stationand so much more. This made the wedding feel more like a ‘food fair’, which theyloved, adding, “We finished the night with popcorn, candy floss, burgers and hot dogs.” »

FULL ON ENTERTAINMENT

» Sarah and David had planned a super cool wedding venue entrance They booked the talented Sean Meachen to play their favourite Mamma Mia song on his saxophone, while they danced their way behind him into the venue. We found all of our guests cheering and dancing with us! We then headed straight to our beautiful champagne tower, a true show stopper”, they remembered.

During the celebration their guests enjoyed a champagne’ wall, Cempila – a telephone booth for everyone toleave them messages, a live painter and photo booths.

David and Sarah evencreated a life-size crossword where their guests needed to guess the answers to questions about them and write them down, toshow if they know them both, all-too-well. At the end of the wedding day they noticed the crossword was complete. Andall the answers were correct! Ryan Hili sang I Guess I’m in Love for the couple’s first dance, which made the whole moment more memorable. »

» And Sarah added, “We also had a surprise guest singer which neither Dave nor I knew about!! Ira Losco went on stage and sang a few songs which we loved.”

There was also music at fromharpist Laetitia, Chill music by Megan May, the Band: GIANNI, and Urpani at the after party

LASTING MEMORIES

David and Sarah will never forget includingTEMA as wedding

organiser which truly saved the day and made the whole planning phase smooth sailing. The way all their guests, attendants and suppliers went out of their way to make the day extra wonderful and, especially for Sarah, “Seeing my 84-year-old grandma on the dancefloor, dancing her way through the night is a memory I will cherish forever. As special as the reception was, I will never forget the love we felt during our Mass ceremony. Truly indescribable.”

“It didn't feel real... It truly felt like we were in a movie.” –Sarah & David

THE COUPLE

Ylenia & Daniel 20 July 2024

Ylenia Spiteri, 29, a radio host and Daniel Testa, 27, a radio host were married on July 20th, at Alfa Gardens, Attard.

POPPING THE QUESTION

“D

aniel and I had always wanted to get marriedit was something we often talked about. It was just a matter of when he would propose. We’ve known each other for 12 years and have been together for five, so it felt like the proposal was bound to happen soon’’, says Ylenia.

On June 11, 2023, the couple travelled to London for a festival where Ylenia’s favourite band was performing. She never imagined that Daniel would propose, especially since they went through all the security checks together and she didn’t see any sign of a ring box.

Seven hours into the festival, the Jonas Brothers had finally taken the stage, with one of her favourite songs, Cool. “Out of nowhere, Daniel turned to me and said, ‘You know what would be cool?, if we got married.’ At that moment, I wasn’t even looking at him because I was so focused on the stage. But when I glanced over, I saw him down on one knee, proposing!

“Afterwards, we talked about not wanting a long engagement and decided on July 20, 2024, as our wedding date”, she added.

The couple combined their idea of a garden wedding with a black and white theme, beautifully captured in the creation of their most unique and elegant invitations, which received countless compliments. For the souvenirs, they wanted something their guests would both love and use, so they created a custom scent for their personalised soap souvenirs. »

From dreams to reality

ROMANTIC AND PERSONAL

» Ylenia and Daniel always wanted to read their own vows at the wedding so they chose to have a ceremony at the wedding venue itself, Alfa Gardens, which was big enough to separate into two venues. As soon as their guests entered they were met with the first area. Daniel and Ylenia had chosen a spot under the beautiful olive trees overlooking the beautiful venue. The space was expertly divided to make it feel cosy and personal.

“We added a special touch by lining the path to the venue with our photos, enhancing the arrival experience. A custom dance floor featuring our names added a unique flair, and the stage, adorned with fairy lights, created a magical ambiance that perfectly complemented the evening’’, the couple explained.

After the ceremony everyone could take a small, lovely walk that led them to the second area of the venue. Everything looked so magical. Every detail at the venue was on point.

“The ceremony was beyond words, absolutely beautiful! We planned every aspect together, from the music and decor to all the little details, which made it even more special to us.The highlight of the ceremony was our vows. Unintentionally, we ended up writing nearly identical vows, which was such a sweet and touching surprise. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.As we walked out of the ceremony, we had the Friends theme song play, a nod to how our love story began, with a simple friendship”, said the couple.

Yleniadidn’t have a particular style in mind for her wedding dress. “I just wanted something that felt like ‘me’.When I found my dress, it was everything I didn’t know I was looking for, absolutely magical. I kept the jewellery simple, just silver earrings and a tennis necklace so that the dress could shine on its own”, she explained.

For her bouquet, Ylenia always knew she wanted white roses–there’s just something timeless about them. She also dreamed of flowers lining the aisle and a beautiful flower arch background as they said their vows. Their florist absolutely nailed it.

“My bouquet was gorgeous, but my bridesmaids’ bouquets were truly incredible. »

» I gave the florist a piece of their dress fabric, and they matched the flowers perfectly to the dresses. It all came together in such a stunning way that I couldn’t have imagined it any better”, she said.

Daniel went with a classic black tux to keep with their blackand-white theme.

And all six bridesmaids looked gorgeous in deep rust coloured dresses and simply styledjewellery.

As for their rings, “We went with simple silver bands. Daniel had my initials and our wedding date engraved on his, which made it even more special, thanks to Clement Jewellers. My ring is a stunning half-round eternity band”, said Ylenia.

A SHOW STOPPING RECEPTION

Ylenia and David had planned their wedding to be a bit different from the usual. They dreamed of having food stations instead of traditional waiters with canapés. Their caterers loved the idea and helped bring it to life. Everything fell perfectly into place.

‘’We had seven fantastic stations: Cheese & Parma, sushi, pizza, Chinese, smoked meats, frozen cocktails, and a live ice cream station. Plus, there was a Donut Wall with a white chocolate fountain. The food was incredible–freshly prepared right at the venue and absolutely mouth-watering.

“The ice cream cart was a huge hit, letting guests choose their flavour and dip it in different types of chocolate. And the frozen cocktails, like mojito lollies and Pina Colada shaved ice, were just as impressive. It was exactly the unique and memorable touch we wanted for our special day.

“And we didn’t stop there. During the after-party, we surprised everyone with cheeseburgers in cute little boxes and crispy fries.

“Our wedding cake was a real showstopper, with six stunning layers and little figures of our two dogs on separate tiers. It was the centre piece of the celebration, and we picked three flavours that everyone loved”, they concluded.

THE PERFECT SONG

Choosing just one song for our first dance was incredibly tough. Ylenia had a song in mind from the beginning, Anyone,by Justin Bieber. “It might seem a bit cheesy, but the lyrics always bring me to tears, and it’s a song that reminds us of the early days of our relationship’’, she explained.

They decided not to do a choreographed dance or learn any specific moves. Instead, they just went with it and warned their guests that they hadn’t rehearsed.

Entertainment was the highlight of the night. Kevin Paul and his band entertainedtheir guests, and were a great hit. The couple wanted to play well-known songs to get everyone dancing, and it worked like a charm. »

“The emotions we experienced were unforgettable.” –Ylenia & Daniel

» “I’ve never seen so many people on the dance floor, including our parents!”, said Ylenia.

There were also three photo booths. The first a printing booth where guests took a photo and received a copy, and an extra copy was added to their guest book with their messages alongside it, then a 360 video booth which the guests loved, and a phone booth where they could leave Daniel and Ylenia personal messages.

“We also had a live painter creating portraits of our guests throughout the evening. And for party favours, we provided hand fans and flip flops for everyone. It was the perfect way to keep our guests comfortable and entertained all night long.”

MAGICAL MEMORIES

Looking back Ylenia remembers how everyone, from friends to family, helped the couple. How it felt being completely at ease knowing that Yanika was everywhere making sure it all ran smoothly, even checkingthey were eating and drinking, and how wonderful it was having her makeup artistand hair stylist come to her house to work with her and her bridal team so everyone could get ready in the comfort of theirown space.

And the way that: “Planning everything together made our wedding even more special. I never imagined our dream wedding could become a reality, but it was perfect. Everything went exactly as planned, and we had so much fun, I only wish it could have lasted longer. Walking to the ceremony and the venue and seeing every detail we had envisioned come to life felt surreal. The whole day was magical, and the emotions we experienced were unforgettable. It truly was the best day of our lives.”
