W

e can hardly believe our winter issue is here already. So much has happened since we looked forward, to a year of marvellous wedding features and stories. Suddenly, it was even suggested our spring and summer issues may not appear. But that was never going to happen. Weddings are planned way ahead, so couples will always be looking for hints and inspiration. Many, who postponed their great day, look for information from and about suppliers who can help them. And those who went ahead with their weddings are all too eager to share their experiences and encourage others.

WINTER IS NOT A SEASON,

IT’S A CELEBRATION

We’ve been here all along, to join in with them. So this issue is a celebration of triumph over adversity, as they say. Proof that, by being flexible and patient about new arrangements, and making every effort to find your special way of confirming one of life’s most important relationships, the show will go on. It is also a tribute to all the venues, caterers, florists, decorators, retailers and organisers who are going so far to make sure their clients have the best wedding possible; to all the families and friends who braved safety measures and were there for the couples, even if many had to miss the actual event, and to the brides’ and grooms’ teams who will have worked very hard as their roles took on a lot of extra responsibility. Everyone knows how much preparation and heart searching is involved in a wedding, or they soon find out. These days there is even more at stake. But from what we have learned producing this year’s issues it is possible. It’s never too early to start planning.

“Keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever. ” - A.A.Milne, from Winnie-the-Pooh

But, if you need to postpone don’t delay too long. Perhaps, these days, being married seems more important than how you get married. There will be other chances for the huge parties and celebrations. So enjoy this special issue, and if you are newly married and would like to share your story in one of our issues, please get in touch with us. And to all couples thinking of ‘tying the knot’ remember: Love will find a way, whenever and however you decide to say I do.

The IDO team Please note that all weddings held during the Covid 19 Pandemic observed the mandatory regulations that were in place at the time, and that these are constantly changing. Different rules may apply for different weddings and dates.

HINTS & HELP

Time to stay close MARRIAGE VOWS MENTION ALL THE SITUATIONS AND EMOTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH COUPLES MAY FIND THEMSELVES AND WHEN THEIR TOGETHERNESS WILL BE MOST IMPORTANT. TODAY WE ARE EXPERIENCING WHAT THESE VOWS REALLY REFER TO, AND HOW HAVING EACH OTHER HAS NEVER SEEMED SO IMPORTANT.

C

ovid restrictions and the results of these, are affecting our lives now, and will do in the future, in ways we are only gradually discovering. Togetherness as a couple will be one of the greatest ways to cope. For better or worse lockdown measures in Malta don’t seem to have been nearly as thorough as those in many countries. Society here hasn’t the same sense of responsibility or self preservation as more disciplined nations. Policies can be easily influenced, lack of experience and reliable information can lead to an inability to make responsible decisions and find solutions. While our freedom is curtailed, even by measures designed to keep us safe, we look for compensations, ways round it, substitutes for what we are missing. Having adapted to living together 24/7 and established a way of life that suits us very nicely thanks, everything has changed; for us and everyone else. And this is actually quite drastic. Everything we took for granted is skewed. It’s not even worth saying what, and how, here because we all have a personal take on it. Trying to carry on as normal is not the

6 I DO

answer because there is no normal anymore. And we are still trying to find a new normal that doesn’t seem to be rather threatening and depressing. But, as a couple it can be easier. It’s even quite fun to look for, imagine and create ways of making up for the things we cannot do for now. It’s certainly better to be with someone you love when there are, or certainly should be, so few ways to meet up with friends and family like we used to. If you are working from home you have probably discovered that this isn’t the easy way out a lot of people may think it is. Make space for one another. It takes patience and an understanding of what a partner needs to do their job in such circumstances, and this may need some working out.

Discuss what’s going on, how it affects you and how you will cope. Uncertainty in the early years of marriage is scary but going over possibilities, good and bad is really helpful. It’s a chance to anticipate, prepare and plan for what could happen. Stay careful so you do

not worry your partner. Whatever ‘facts’ are going around, no one is immune. And we already know that some adverse effects of the illness don’t end with a negative test. The good thing is marriage is one state where social distancing isn’t necessary. Work closely on joint projects in your home. Take every opportunity you can to hold hands, hug and get physical. The clocks have gone back so warm up the darker, colder evenings together with a home-cooked supper, or takeaway. Stream your entertainment, or guzzle a good old box set. Create a date night vibe, play games, or just talk. Log and record all the simple, or weird and wonderful ways you are managing, so you can tell the grandkids what you did in the time of Covid-19. And, very important, keep your daily expectations small. Plan all the things you look forward to doing when we can all go from A to B easily again. Stay in touch with far-away friends and family. And enjoy the extraordinary time you can have alone. It will prove priceless.

We at Villa Arrigo are abiding by all the safety regulations

THE BRIDES ON OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.

Our winter bride, ROX ANNE MIFSUD, has just graduated in graphic design and she certainly brought beauty and elegance to our shoot. Where do you live? I live in Naxxar Where would you like to live? I’ve always dreamt of living in an isolated and peaceful place, somewhere in the country side. What is the happiest job or career you could have? Art has always been a true passion of mine and having said that the career I hope to attain is being a painter and artist. How do you like to relax?. In my free time I love to draw portraits and experiment with art whilst listening to music. Who are the people who make you happiest, and for what reason? My family, which I am very grateful for, always make me appreciate life and just accept and love who I am. I just know that my family will be there for me no matter what. What could the world do without, and what does it need more of? The world would definitely be better off without the enormous amount of plastic we produce. I think we also need to take care of our environment which is our home after all, before it’s too late. How do you feel about social media, and what do you mostly use it for? I think that social media is very powerful nowadays, especially in our social life, I personally use social media to post pictures of myself and the work that I do.

Make history with your wedding

L

ocation is everything. But so are the heartstrings that equate memory with a sense of belonging to a place. Nothing is as iconic as Malta’s sand-coloured ramparts and limestone bastions sweeping down to the deep blue promise of the Mediterranean beyond. Our history and those horizons are indelibly etched in the fabric of our Maltese identity. We are a nation of stone and sea, of resilience and reinvention. Selecting a historic backdrop for your wedding is about celebrating the past in your future. It anchors your special day in time and tradition, and coats the occasion in a unique patina of nostalgia, culture and elegance. With a portfolio including neolithic temples, baroque auberges, churches and palaces, forts, a maritime museum and paleochristian catacombs thrown in, for a quirky dose of gothic inclination, Heritage Malta offers unique, exclusive venues for every taste and budget. Every couple has their own personal reasons for choosing a wedding venue. One couple made Fort St Angelo their chosen location because their first date was played out against a harbour luminescent with a full-moon. For Benton Grech Mifsud and his wife Ylenia, who tied the knot on August 15 this year, there was never going to be an alternative locale. Born and raised in Birgu, Benton recalls exploring Fort St Angelo as a kid, and cavorting with his friends in the underground tunnels below. The Grech Mifsuds’ big day had to be postponed as a result of the pandemic fallout, and the number of guests halved. The remaining guests were relieved that the open expanses of the fort meant they could party with peace of mind, and maintain social distancing. Having just officially become Mr and Mrs, entering the fort, a permanent fixture of his childhood, was a sentimental highlight for Benton. “After all the stress of having to shift the date, going up the steps of the fort made me forget everything. In itself, the grandeur of Fort St Angelo makes you feel special. It was such a happy moment knowing that we had made it there,” he said. Throughout history, control of this fort meant effective rule of the Maltese Islands during at least the past thousand years. Indeed, no other fortress has been engaged, with the same intensity, in the shaping of Malta’s destiny. Again, in similar vein to St Elmo, couples are spoilt for choice with the variety of venues available at Fort St Angelo. The picturesque sunset views of the Vittoriosa Marina on D’Homedes Bastion make for memorable wedding portraits. And, having

served as a theatre and cinema for the entertainment of the British troops, the Egmont Hall, has its own raised diais. In the historic heart of the country, the majestic front courtyard of Vilhena Palace is conveniently situated just a few steps away from the main gates of the Silent City of Mdina. The 18th century palace, reconstructed in 1726 by Grandmaster Antoino Manuel De Vilhena in the Parisian Baroque style, offers an exquisite setting for a summer wedding. Travelling back through the annals of time to pre-history, the neoilithic temples of Ġgantija in Gozo, and those of Ħaġar Qim and Tarxien in Malta, make for UNESCO World Heritage settings that are unparalleled and are sure to leave many a foreign guest open mouthed. Back in the Capital, the palatial, Baroque Auberge d’Italie in Valletta, mostly built in the tenure of Grand Master Gregorio Carafa, yields its couryard and the ‘Camerone’, a former refectory. Heritage Malta’s portfolio also includes the church dedicated to Our Lady of Pilar adjacent to the Auberge d’Aragon and the Chapel of St Anne in Fort St Elmo, where couples can get married. A Valletta location adds an irresitible dash of panache to any nuptials. The city is perenially dressed for the occasion. The happy couple are not simply booking a venue, but also a slice of history. At the tip of the peninsula, the 16th century starshaped Fort St Elmo, provides plenty of possibilities for socially distanced gatherings in greater numbers with its vast piazzas and large open spaces. With its brightly lit windows and maroon diamond floor tiles, St Elmo also features an equipped conference hall ideal for the exchanging of vows in a civil ceremony. And for those couples deprived of a large wedding because of this year’s pandemic

measures, there is always the opportunity to organise the reception they originally dreamed of, for a first-year wedding anniversary in 2021. Brides will have the opportunity to wear their dress for a second time. After all, so much thought and detail went into it, that it deserves to take centre stage once again. The magnificent parade grounds opposite the chapel of St Anne in Piazza d’Armi are surrounded by buildings which served as barracks during the British period. The spacious Cavalier Piazza is more secluded, with giant spaces for wall projections. Meanwhile, fronted by the imposing Porta del Soccorso, the barrel vaulted Casemates Area, which overlooks the mount of the Grand Harbour, presents all-yearround shelter from the elements. A location like no other, the strategic west terrace enjoys spectacular views overlooking the Valletta promontory and Marsamxett Harbour, while the Upper Museum spaces afford an unrestricted view of the horizon. Across the water, dreamily romantic at night, the esplanade and gardens of the Ex-Royal Naval Hospital at Bighi, now the premises of Heritage Malta’s Head Office, also offer panoramic views of Valletta, Fort St Angelo and the Grand Harbour lit up and iridescent in the evening. Nearby in Birgu, the garden within the Inquisitor’s Palace, an early modern powerhouse, makes for a novel and unexpected venue. For those with seafaring connections, St Angelo’s commodius hall inside the Malta Maritime Museum, housed within the old naval bakery, with its terrace overlooking the Birgu Marina caters for both indoor and outdoor seating arrangements.

Whatever the venue you go for, make a historical statement that guarnatees your wedding is one to remember. I DO 23

CELEBRATIONS TO COME

24 I DO

DREAM WEDDINGS

all it takes

BIG, BLING, BEAUTIFUL CELEBRATIONS ARE OUT OF THE QUESTION THESE DAYS, BUT YOUR WEDDING COULD STILL BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. HERE ARE SOME WAYS THIS CAN HAPPEN.

F

irstly adjust your priorities. There’s a lot of truth in the saying small is beautiful. Check the regulations as far as you can and try and anticipate making adjustments to your plans if necessary. Find a wedding organiser who shares your vision or, if you want to do it yourself, research the services you will need and establish an understanding with them. They will all want to play their part in making your wedding celebrations the very best they can be. Highlight the areas that are ‘Covid exempt’ and one, of course, is your dress; no reason why you should compromise on your heart’s desire here. Add gorgeous shoes and accessories and that’s one dream come true. Think how you can make the basic things different. Travel in a car with character, even a karrozin or a quad bike. Exchanging your vows will be extra special if your write your own acknowledging the situation. It is part of your new life together, sharing the good with the bad and overcoming obstacles together. Include meaningful and personal music favourites, recorded if necessary, for the sentimental reasons that are so important on a wedding day. Sharing your day with family and friends is one of the most important aspects of your wedding so find as many ways as possible for them to join in. For example ask them to wear outfits representing their favourite century or decade. You can state formal or smart casual. Who knows what fascinating creations may reappear after years spent saved in a wardrobe. And your guests will love such freedom of choice. Another idea is to offer prizes for the wedding guest/s with the best mask. Booking a venue with an exceptional aspect or history, and paying great attention to every tiny detail will turn your ‘small’ wedding into a really lavish occasion. Using your theme and colour scheme create clever effects with flowers, potted plants, lighting, mirrors and message boards. Stage picturesque focal points and photos of yourselves and special family members. Finally, have one really amazing arrangement to display your wedding cake. Set sanitizing stations to look attractive perhaps on vintage tables with posies of flowers, art deco drinks trolleys with interesting shaped bottles, or in attractive

baskets around the venue. And have suitable containers nearby for used wipes and tissues. Catering for smaller, seated weddings gives you the chance to stage a mini banquet. Find out your guests’ preferences, for vegetarian and allergies only, not just fussy eaters, then plot with your caterer to create an absolute feast. There’s no need to avoid clusters on your cake either. Flowers, figurines, frosting – fabulous is what you’re aiming for. The same goes for drinks. A good cocktail barman will certainly shake up some decorative and delicious stunners, with original nonalcohol options too. Welcome your guests with a souvenir personalised gift box or basket containing a miniature sanitizer, a mask, custom-made in your wedding colours if you like, and alcohol based wipes for guests who cannot resist handing their phones around. Remember to add an individual, hand-written, personal message thanking them for being there and saying what it means to you. On the entertainment side involve your guests as much as possible. Ask each one to prepare a few words about the first time they ever met the bride or groom, or both. Take advantage of the increasing popularity of speeches by appointing someone to collect messages and print out emails from guests who are unable to attend, and read them during the celebrations. Find a friendly photographer who will cleverly make sure everyone has their own special wedding souvenir photo, because group shots are not a good idea. Sharing your video will help absent family and friends feel part of it all as well. Honour distancing dictates by hiring a magician, stand-up comedian, fire dancers and eaters or an artist who can make quick sketches or gentle cartoons of each guest to keep as a memento. Choose musicians with the personality and talent to stir up a lively vibe or a romantic atmosphere throughout. Then light up the sky with fireworks. And to celebrate just how personal a smaller wedding can be consider opening it out to all, via live streaming; or, depending on the venue, extending the invitation to all family members and guests who arrive on four legs, thus abiding by the number rules and ensuring instant amusement. Tradition may be a huge part of a wedding and great importance is put on the way things are done. But none of this is cast in stone. Now you have a chance to shake things up a bit and customise your wedding even more, so it really reflects you both as a couple. There can be no better way to start living happily ever after.

Why wear white? WHEN MOST BRIDES IMAGINE THEIR WEDDING DRESS IT'S A TRADITIONAL WHITE ONE. BUT WHITE DRESSES WERE NOT ALWAYS WORN FOR THE CEREMONY.

I

n many countries and societies white has always been associated with virtue and purity, making a suitable choice for a bride, but historically wedding dresses were not expected to be white until the middle of the 19th century. In fact, brides were married in all colours, or simply in the very best dress they possessed. Often, rather than respecting a tradition brides looked at economy and practicality. White, being difficult to keep clean, would simply not have been considered for the entire outfit. The bride would have a suitable and celebratory new dress for her marriage ceremony and celebrations, however it would be one that could be worn again. Not till much later did the idea of having a once-in-a-lifetime dress come up. Sometimes, a bride would not have a new dress at all. A second hand one, altered or lent for the day, would be happily received. In fact, in some cultures it was the norm. Neither was it unusual for a bride to wear the dress her mother had worn. Many brides kept their dresses in the hope that a daughter would wear it one day. Alterations and additions would be made, and the new bride would be happy because of the sweet, sentimental associations the dress had. The white dress which society expects came thanks to England’s Queen Victoria. When she married Prince Albert, in 1840, she walked down the aisle in a white gown, wearing a white veil and a crown of orange blossoms and myrtle. The guests were not amused, they were extremely disappointed; where was all the pomp and circumstance? But Victoria was ahead of her time. She was making a point. Instead of the mind-blowing extravagance of previous royal weddings, hers was to be a modest event. Her people would see that she would run their country with the same sense of economy. And, with an understanding of the power of publicity that would impress today’s influencers, her white gown displayed the beauty and fine details of the Honiton Lace used for its trimmings. This was because, at the time the British lace industry was in difficulties, and Victoria would have been well aware of the publicity her gown would receive when reports of the wedding filled newspapers and magazines throughout Europe and the British Empire. From then on wealthier brides seized and embraced the trend of a white wedding dress. Eventually, almost all young women, and probably their mothers, began to see the advantages of an all white dress, and it became the tradition we still follow today. White may still be a popular choice, but some brides no longer think it’s the most flattering one. Shades of pearl, champagne, cream and even the palest shell pink, misty blue or grey actually look more attractive next to certain skin tones. Others may be put off by what they see as an irrelevant association of white with purity and innocence, or have an urge to shake up some of the more conventional traditions and put their own, very definite, mark on their wedding with something as obvious as their dress. There is also the connection of white with mourning in several cultures and countries. When Mary Queen of Scots wore her favourite gown, which just happened to be white, for her wedding to the Dauphin of France, in 1558, she outraged her in-laws and the French people for being so improper. Two years later, her husband succumbed to impossibly invasive head surgery for an ailment. The white wedding dress was immediately blamed, for casting a curse on him. But, none of this should influence a bride’s choice of dress. She should wear what makes her feel happy. Then she will certainly make a beautiful bride.

THE COUPLE

Glen & Sandro 29 August 2020 Glen Vella: 37, a musician, and Sandro Zammit, 37, a learning support educator, were married at the Grand Ballroom Radisson Blu Resort, St Julian’s SURPRISE PROPOSAL Glen and Sandro were together for over 16 years. The marriage conversation had come up several times, yet they felt that if they did take the step, they wanted to be married, and not in a civil union. Same-sex marriage was legalised in September 2017 and they had planned a trip to Paris a month before. For Sandro it was the perfect place for a surprise proposal to Glen. On the second day, Sandro informed Glen he had planned a day just for him and gave him a card and a gift. Asking Sandro to trust him, he blindfolded him, put him in new clothes and they went to meet a photographer. There Sandro said he had booked a photo shoot to create a timeless memory of their trip. “In a quiet spot with stunning views of the Eiffel Tower, while Glen was distracted posing for a photo, I quickly knelt and called him. He turned around, it was a pure surprise. I read a card I had written, and at the end I took the ring from my pocket and said: ‘Glen, will you marry me?’ He was in so much shock he did not reply. We were so overwhelmed with emotion, we laughed and cried. Soon after we called our family and friends”, Sandro remembered. »

A TRADITION ROOTED IN EXCELLENCE

68, VILLAMBROSA STREET, HAMRUN HMR1129 T: 2124 6920 / 2122 7085 E: INFO@ELIA.COM.MT WWW.ELIA.COM.MT

» “The proposal was more special than I could have ever imagined, and the surprise was better than I thought he’d be able to pull off”, added Glen. The couple’s invitations designed by Scic Crafts Studio echoed their theme of black, white, gold and silver colour combo, with some geometric shapes, included one of their favourite pictures together, and were printed by Bow and Ribbon. A PERSONAL CEREMONY Sandro and Glen wanted their venue to reflect them as a couple. They considered the Greek amphitheatre in Ta’ Qali, where they first met, but as their original date was April, it might have rained. Robert Samut Hall, Floriana, was approved by the Marriage Registry in two weeks. But, three weeks before their wedding, one day before the marriage bans were published, new Covid-19 measures meant they had two hours to find an alternative venue. »

» After quickly searching online they fell in love with the Grand Ballroom at the Radisson Blu Resort, St Julian’s, but they also wanted to see round it. Within 30 minutes of contacting the hotel they signed the contract. “We are thankful for the events manager for going above and beyond in everything. She was so patient with this last minute change that stressed the life out of us”, they exclaimed. And they dressed in style. “When it comes to formal attire we always choose Charles and Ron. We wanted a black and white combination. Glen loves shimmer and sparkle. He chose a black sequin jacket. Sandro opted for a white self-patterned jacket. Charles and Ron created stunning complementing looks, showing our personality and style”, they explained. They made an easy choice to wear matching wedding rings, by both picking the same ring. »

» And, on their 19th anniversary was their ceremony, the most meaningful part of the wedding. They put a lot of effort into creating something authentic and meaningful. Noel Formosa, a close friend was legally able to officiate at the wedding, making it all the more personal and special. “One of the most beautiful parts of the ceremony was our vows. We wrote them as a surprise for each other. We still recall every word said, every laugh and every tear of joy that we shed. We held hands tight during the whole ceremony and we could feel each other’s heartbeat and emotional state”, they remembered. They also honoured their

parents by having them hand over their wedding rings, which were by Beldiam Gioielleria. They shared their story with their guests through a biography video including the silliest, happiest and most loving moments of their love story. Music by Animae Gospel Choir, directed by Pamela Bezzina, assisted by Angela Tirchett, and Paul Giordimaina was especially memorable, and a highlight was the speeches by their nephews and nieces, witnesses and Grooms’ Squad. “Singing the song This is Why I Love You to Sandro was another emotional moment for us all”, Glen added.

“At the end, although we had to adjust our plans, we still pulled off an unforgettable ceremony”, they concluded. TRADITIONAL, BUT DIFFERENT Choosing Giardini Lambrosa by Elia was their easiest planning decision. They knew the food is of the highest standard, and booked without looking elsewhere. But new measures meant the ‘normal Maltese’ standup reception had to become a seven-course dinner. Thanks go to Clifton Vella for creating an exquisite menu and ensuring everything went exactly as planned, and Alfsons Ent. Ltd for drinks. »

I DO 37

» They had two cakes, one dummy cake for the ceremonial cutting, one real packed in individual boxes for guests to enjoy at home. Sandro’s romantic vision for both ceremony and venue decor was created by Arnold Sammut and Paul Target, assisted by the Grooms’ Squad. IlWarda Flower Shop provided flowers for the ceremony and reception. Their first dance was a surprise selfchoreographed song and dance mash-up of various songs ending with their song Hero by Enrique Iglesias. » Guests couldn’t dance, but most of them were singers and each gave their own performances, which were greatly appreciated, as were the table games and souvenir portraits of each guest, taken by their photographer and printed on the spot. For fun everyone received a mask and small bottle of sanitizer, plus a succulent plant in a terracotta pot decorated by Sandro with the words ‘hope/joy/pride/unity/dream’. The couple planned every detail of their wedding themselves, and then had to rethink it all in only two weeks. “But thankfully support came in many forms, with the love, support, generosity and time that our Grooms’ Squad, and so many caring friends and family gave us. We were surrounded by the love of our family and friends, who were as excited and overjoyed to watch us seal our love as we were”, they said.

THE COUPLE

Valentina & Jurgen 18 July 2020 Valentina Maggi, 28, an accountant, and Jurgen Borg, 25, a police constable were married at Pergola Hotel & Spa, Mellieha.

A ROMANTIC PROPOSAL ack in 2018, in beautiful Mellieha, Valentina received a romantic proposal from Jurgen and the couple planned their wedding day for June 5th, 2020. But, due to the Covid-19 situation they decided to postpone their wedding further to ensure their guests’ safety. However, they did not give up on getting married in the year 2020 and decided to continue with their civil wedding, followed by an intimate reception with their loved ones. They decided to go for a very different style from their original wedding. “Our wedding theme may be described as a vintage wedding inspired by 1920s”, they explained. “Since this wedding was organised in six weeks, and given the fact that we celebrated the day with our intimate family and not having a large number of guests, we opted to visit every guest and announce their invitation to the wedding personally, which made it even more special,” they added. »

» RELAX ED INTIMACY Valentina and Jurgen opted for a simple location, so Pergola Hotel & Spa was their best choice, with a relaxed atmosphere for a civil wedding, the perfect ambiance for their reception, and a breathtaking backdrop for the photos. “As a couple we love Mellieha as it reminds us of our engagement”, they said. “It offered a magnificent view of the Mellieha church, whilst having a tranquil atmosphere whilst we said our ‘I dos’. For us it included everything we wanted for our intimate wedding.” To suit their vintage wedding theme, Valentina selected a sparkling silver wedding dress, as opposed to a soft white dress. Her vintage hairstyle, by Marie Claire Hairdressing, including soft curls, and 20s-shaped red lips, by Sarah Doublet, were complimented by red nails, by Soshique Beauty Clinic. “For my something borrowed I decided to go for a simple silver bracelet, borrowed from my mum for good luck”, she said. As the groom, Jurgen selected a more relaxed style and picked the smart-casual look, of a classic three piece grey suit. After consulting their florist, Fior Di Rita, Valentina decided to go for a very simple elegant bouquet of baby roses together with gypsophila; and Jurgen wore a baby rose buttonhole. Their rings were exactly what they chose for the original wedding, however, with multiple date changes, they wisely decided not to have their wedding day, date but only their names engraved inside the rings. »

» A TRULY WARM RECEPTION Having a small wedding, gave Valentina and Jurgen the opportunity to take care of the décor for the venue, themselves. They included flower petals, scented candles and some personalised items such as the illuminated V and J initials, which complemented the wedding cake table perfectly, and added a red carpet by Aaron’s Carpet Service. From Pergola Hotel & Spa catering they chose various items of finger food for their guests, so they could continue to enjoy each other’s company and the lovely atmosphere of the reception at the same time, and their traditional two-tier almond cake wedding cake topped with a personalised silver wedding topper showing both their names. “We had our first dance to our song, Over and Over Again, by Nathan Sykes. After which we danced the night away, together with loved ones, to some of our favourite tunes”, the couple remembered. And they even managed to steal a dance with their much adored nephew, who was dying to dance with the new bride and groom. And, as a memento of such a happy wedding Valentina and Jurgen chose souvenirs which were completely different from the ones they originally planned. “We wanted something useful whilst being special enough for our wedding day. We decided to opt for homemade carob syrup from Talpe, having our personalised tag, showing the details of our wedding day”, they explained. »

THANKS FOR FINE DETAILS The couple agreed their wedding would not have been the same without their event coordinator at Pergola Hotel& Spa, Jonathan Grima, who was only a call away and there to help in case they needed anything. He was also kind enough to offer to organise all the decor for their wedding so as they didn’t need to worry about the details on the actual day. Since they had to postpone their wedding day due to the Covid-19

situation, they decided to keep the wedding under wraps for the people who were not invited, in case they needed to postpone the wedding yet again. “You can imagine the reaction of various family and friends when they found out we got married from a Facebook post the day after the wedding. It was something that not all couples can do, and the reaction we had afterwards was priceless”, they remembered.

THE COUPLE

Cressida & Matthew 22 August 2020 Cressida Graham; 25, a business support officer, and Matthew Sacco; 29; a maintenance manager, were married at St Lawrence Parish church, Vittoriosa.

PICTURE BOOK PROPOSAL fter a 10 years relationship it was time to get married, so Matthew proposed to Cressida in Mdina. “Cressida thought that this was going to be a normal date night. I had already planned everything and informed the headwaiter about what would happen”, Matthew explained. When dessert was served, the headwaiter brought a gift for Cressida. She opened it and found an album full of pictures the couple had taken up to that date. On turning one of the last pages, Cressida heard a proposal coming from the album. When she turned the last page she found a box set into the album. There Matthew had placed the ring for her to take. The album was cleverly created by The Fotografer, Fgura, and the engagement ring was from Alencia. After a few months wedding preparations began. Cressida and Matthew already had a clear idea of what they needed, and having Mathew’s father Twanny as their organiser helped the process. “Little did we know that all the plans would be revoked, given the situation we are in. The date was set for 22 June, 2020. However, like many other couples we had to postpone. Our new date was set to 22 August, 2020, and after a rough road we were determined to do it”, they said. »

» With no specific theme, the couple both knew what they wanted. They filled both church and reception with flowers, and wanted people to feel they were in heaven on earth. They designed their invitations together with Charlene, at Foilplus, and particularly wanted to include all the details in the simplest form. They also used the venue and church as the backgrounds for their invitations. A HISTORIC LOCATION Matthew and Cressida chose St Lawrence church for their ceremony. “The church was chosen on two factors; the kind of church it is big, artistic and historic, and its location. We wanted to cross from Birgu Waterfront to Valletta by means of a yacht. We kept this as a surprise and informed all the groomsmen and bridal team after the Mass that we were going to the reception in style”, they remembered. Cressida arrived at the church courtesy of Borg Car Rental. There, flower arrangements by John Fleur & Kevin, harp solos by Esmeralda, from Harpist Malta and marvellous singing by Raquela, booked through Tunin Entertainment, plus a carpet by Wedding Bells & Carpet Service, created their heavenly scene. »

» From a very young age Cressida had always had in mind how her dream dress would be. To have that exact dress she decided it should be tailor made. Thanks to Joe Parnis and the miracle hands of His & Hers Tailoring, her dream came true. She also wore a headpiece from Eve’s and comfortable shoes from Mariage. Her wedding jewellery, from ZsaZsa, was a gift from her parents. “My bouquet was a bit different than the normal since it was not made out of real flowers but instead it was all made from handmade Ganutel flowers by my father in-law Twanny Sacco”, Cressida added. Matthew wore a three-piece navy blue suit with a Chinese style jacket collar and distinctive print design, from The Groom Collection. The couple had chosen their rings on a family holiday abroad and they were a special gift. A VENUE WITH A DIFFERENCE Matthew and Cressida wanted their wedding venue to be different. They loved Lower Barraka Gardens at first sight, and once they had been to a wedding there that was it. And they made sure their guests would have the best possible time. Anton and Matthew from Anton Décor took care of the stage and all lighting. Together with Busy Bee, they created an excellent, mesmerizing menu with a serving method appropriate for the situation. Cressida’s father Charles Graham, manufactured specialised trolleys so the staff could take and deliver orders safely. All their guests gave them very good feedback on the selection and quality. Damian’s Cocktail Bar did a fantastic job with the welcome drink, from a punch bar at the entrance because no bars were allowed. Gin, whisky bar and Popcorn Freak-Shake as a dessert cocktail were also served. »

“Everyone did their utmost to make this wedding a success and for this we are very grateful.” – Cressida & Matthew

» Music was in the hands of Brass House Unit for entertainment and the first dance. “Both Cressida and I used to dance, so we wanted to create a special dance. The first dance was a mix of Argentinian Tango, Tango, and Rumba. We even performed a group dance with all our friends”, the couple remembered. There were also fireworks by Donovan Desira. GRATEFUL THANKS Matthew and Cressida’s wedding may have required special measures, including temperature taking. But Edgar Borg ensured the venue was clean as possible, General Cleaners provided portable toilets and ACJ Cleaning Service kept them very clean. Joseph and Clint provided covers for all the benches at the reception. Everyone from The Fotografer gave continuous help and professionalism. Paul took the video. The couple are also grateful to Andrew Magri for trips from one waterfront to the other, Lower Barrakka Kiosk owner Carol, for her help and patience, Elaine’s Hair Salon, Mosta for the bride team’s hair, Jennifer Dimech for make-up, The Groom Collection for the groomsmen’s outfits, and their parents and friends for being the backbone of their wedding.

THE COUPLE

Roseanne & Keith 8 December 2019 Roseanne Saliba, 32, an HR & administration officer, and Keith Grech, 35, a chief financial officer, were married in Ta’ Giezu Church Valletta.

W

hile Keith was an aviation company CFO, and Roseanne was working in the VIP lounge at Malta International Airport, they developed a crush on one another. However, Keith’s responsibilities meant he was abroad more than in Malta. The couple texted to keep in touch but then decided it was the time to start dating seriously, and Keith opted for an alternative job, with less travelling. Keith proposed on New Year’s Eve, 2018 in Eurodisney – Paris. “I can remember Keith being so shy and taking long to get the words out; however I was over the moon with the lovely ring that he had bought for me”, said Roseanne. For their wedding invitations, by Party Supplies, by Sabrina, the couple used a gold and ivory design, in keeping with their theme of a Christmas Palace. »

I DO 61

» AN EMOTIONAL CEREMONY The couple chose Ta’ Giezu Church because of Roseanne’s childhood memories of spending a lot of time with her grandparents, who lived just across from Ta Giezu church. From a young age she ran in the Valletta streets with her late uncle, who was to be her witness, but passed away a week before the big day. “To keep him with us in spirit we put a nice photograph of him in the reception venue to remember his presence, as he was a second father to me”, she recalled. Rosanne arrived in a car from Borg Garage. There was a red carpet, by Joe Farrugia Carpet Service, and music by harpist Dr Lydia Buttigieg and soprano Nadia Vella. Rosanne wore a dress from Mariage, a ball gown, all in fine lace, trimmed with small pearls. “It simply described how I am. I have always wanted a ball gown dress and as soon as I tried this on I told my mother ‘this is it’”, she said. Ivory satin shoes by Ted Baker, a long, lace-edged veil and a dainty pearl headdress complimented the dress. For jewellery she wore a carat diamond pendant necklace, a gift from her parents for her wedding day, and a pair of diamond carat earrings which was a present from her beloved late uncle. “He was so proud when he chose them for me”, she added. And she carried a bouquet of white roses. The couple exchanged customised rings from Alencia. Keith’s ring was all white gold, and Roseanne’s was a half circle of diamonds. »

» Keith decided on a grey Tuxedo, from The Knot, Fgura. And he gave Roseanne a sentimental present of a semi eternity ring including five diamonds, “This means that we are eternal till death do us part”, he said. Adding: “It was very emotional and when I saw my wife coming down the aisle, I couldn’t believe that our day had really arrived – to be as one.” A PALATIAL RECEPTION The couple fell in love with their venue, Tal-Palazz Montekriso, the moment they set foot in it; with its the large chandeliers and a long pathway to the palazzo itself. And Ruben’s Décor turned it all into a fairytale palace. Keith being head of finance for Busy Bee, settled the couples’ choice of caterer, and they were delighted. From the carvery and chocolate tables, to the ice sculptures and their wedding cake – a plain white cake, of one layer with fine lace and the other all decorated in fine white flowers, they made the day extra wonderful. Another highlight was a splendid fish table, from Rosanne’s mother’s family, which included lobster and oysters and made a grand centre piece in the courtyard. »

» Entertainment was in the hands of The Tailors, with singer Neville Refalo. Unusually, their first dance was a waltz as Roseanne is a pianist and very passionate about classical music. The couple were coached by Alistair and Melanie Chetcuti – Pro Touch Dance School, and swirled in a haze of ‘mist’ as the chandeliers shone and dimmed. Guests were treated to very original souvenirs of Meraki Soaps from the St Jeanne Antide Foundation, and Mango Chutney Paste and Red Wine Chutney in small jars, by Busy Bee. As her wedding ended Rosanne danced the Senorita, in a cha cha style dress made by her mother and seamstress Bessie Caruana, who helped her mother design and plan all the bridesmaids’ dresses. The couple departed as music synchronized with fireworks under a sky full of stars.

“We are still dreaming about our special day. It was a fairytale one.” – Rosanne & Keith

ADVERTORIAL

The 2021 wedding INTERNATIONAL WEDDING TRENDS FOR THE COMING YEAR

T

hink back to the best wedding you’ve ever been to. What was it that makes it stand out in your mind? Was it the dress, the flowers, the cake, the venue? Trends show that luxury weddings will be redefined in 2021, shifting away from the grandiose affairs of the past and making way for more refined, bespoke events. Taking inspiration from the latest wedding reports and findings from floral trends and dresses to fashion and interior trends, we’ve pulled together the musthave and most exciting wedding trends for the coming year. INTIMATE SETTINGS Gone are the days when a wedding party was a list of business partners of the bride and groom’s parents. Today’s wedding party want to spend the day with their nearest and dearest and that means ditching the guest list as long as your arm and going for smaller, more intimate celebrations. Couples can spend their budget more lavishly on a smaller group. Think seated dinners in the garden or even in the magnificent ballroom, delivering a more personalised experience.

THE DRESS The simple and unfussy bridal gown has topped the year’s trends and we have Meghan Markle to thank for that. Her dress was elegant, chic and modern, with an incredible lengthy veil. And did you know that you now get pockets in your wedding dress? Sales for wedding dresses with pockets went up by 83% in the UK last year alone. They’re perfect for hiding your phone, a bit of lippy and maybe even a sneaky tissue! Simple and, above all, comfortable is the way to go in 2021. So much so that you could be wearing trainers on your special day. Companies like Converse, Kate Spade and Jimmy Choo are working the bridal trainer into their repertoire. Think diamonds, sparkles and bespoke designs. What could be better than comfort on the day? THE WEDDING BOUQUET Flowers provide an uplift to any wedding getup. 2021 will see brides shying away from traditional bouquets and going large. Large bouquets with larger varieties and what’s more is you don’t need to stick to the traditional. Why not try something a little different and go for flowers grown locally?
