s summer draws to an end we are busy planning how to spend our autumn evenings. And guess what? They’re packed with research and planning to be able to share our inspiration with you. Having selected some of the best love stories of the year for this edition, we’re thinking about what you can look for when planning your wedding and holiday of a lifetime. Love colour but don’t want to overdo it? Go for varying shades of your favourite shade or one that’s in vogue for your bridesmaids’ dresses. You can also opt to pair complementary colours such as a peachy orange with mint green, a duck egg blue with a pale pink. Alternatively, choose two different colours on the same scale or pair the colour of your choice with contrasting flowers and accessories. Take time to plan your honeymoon. The immediate days after your wedding will be about celebrating your togetherness and making unforgettable memories alone as a married couple. As for honeymoon destination options, Mauritius, Maldives and Seychelles have for years been popular honeymoon destinations with our readers. Couples opting for shorter breaks are tending to unlock the secrets of Italy and Sicily, Greece, France or Cyprus. If you’re yet undecided, you may opt for the United States and for something out of the ordinary, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, South Africa and Brasil are making it to lists of top honeymoon destinations in 2016. No matter how far or close you’ll be, make sure to seal memories that last forever! I Do team, Annaliza & Elaine

e actually met at a mutual friend’s wedding nine years ago when Martin was in the company of my cousin Malcolm. Martin looked all so handsome in his suit and lilac tie, which was somehow lost that night! He gave me a lift back home and phoned me to say he was outside my parents’ house a couple of days later. I had no choice but to see him again, (and again and again!) We promised each other marriage exactly two years before the wedding day. I chose an Edwardian flower cluster ring encrusted with seven diamonds from an antiques shop in Valletta. His gift was an analogue Tissot watch. The Sanctuary of Our Lady in Mellieħa is where my parents, grandparents and great grandparents exchanged vows, so we booked the only Saturday available almost two years before the wedding. The 17th Century cavern with its beautiful monumental arch depicting paintings for graces received from Our Lady of Mellieħa after a long period of draught and the vaulted ceiling are iconic, so much so that the intimate setting needs little added decor. I walked down the aisle to Schubert’s Ave Maria, perfectly interpreted by soprano Dorothy Baldacchino. I’ve known Dorothy for quite a few years and know how seriously she takes her voice so it was a privilege having her part of our big day. I might have changed the wedding date had she not been available! Our love for the outdoors leads us to share many adventures, be it off-roading, treasure hunts and camping with friends, so the wedding had to somehow reflect this.

Besides, wine brings back memories of visits to my grandparent’s house as a child to be greeted by the smell of fermenting homemade beverage in his cellar. So when photographer Jonathan Borg suggested Meridiana Wine Estate as the venue for our wedding, I took him at his word. On the wedding day, Martin’s cousin Fr Blake Camilleri, travelled from Rome to Malta to celebrate our marriage and returned back the next day to finish off exams. Although we kept our calm throughout the day, I was kind of overwhelmed by the feeling that all eyes were on us while we exchanged vows and asked the page boy and flower girl to exchange sides a couple of times thinking Martin and I had each others’ rings on the wrong side, as guests giggled. ‘Jewel Tones’ was the chosen theme that set the mood. Roses in deep plum and bright pink were mixed with peonies and ranunculas in cream and light pink, deep green foliage, and hints of ruby red alstromeria and navy blue ernygium. As for boutonnières we had a mix of cream, pink and plum roses with ruby red ribbon covering the stems.
I DO 19
Jade green was used as an accent colour. The groom’s and groomsmen ties matched the ribbon on the bridal bouquet. The same colour was used on the wedding stationery. Once I had set my mind on the colour scheme, we tracked down a jade green Volkswagen bus that could carry myself and my dad, my three brides maids, flower girl and page boy, and a bunch of balloons. Being all together for the ride to the church and the

winery was a great way to fight the jitters. And the kids really loved it! As preparations peaked, close family members and the wedding party were encouraged to go for gowns in rich shades of emerald green, blue, wine and citrine. Bridesmaids’ dresses were a shade of blush, introducing a romantic, dreamy feel to the rustic venue and decor. Long nights of reading through bridal magazines and Pinterest research led to
several mood boards and loads of DIY ideas. Fairy lights, ornaments made from carob tree branches, a nail string love sign and the cake topper, which Martin and I patiently created, decorated the venue. Not being fans of traditional wedding portraits, we prepared photos of our grandparents and parents taken at their weddings decades ago as well as photos of us as toddlers and others taken during our travels over the past years. These
were set onto two old wooden windows (scooped by my dad from a skip), with each of the windows’ 16 panes serving as frames. We also made a finger print ‘guest book’ showing a VW bus carrying a huge bunch of balloons and repurposed an old wooden wine box for the cards. A hand painted sign read “Thank You for making our day so special!” The wedding cake was a humorous reflection of our personalities. The land rover towing the three tier cake was painstakingly created by our close friend and pastry chef Kevin Vella, who spent several evenings perfecting the model of Martin’s land rover.
This came complete with the number plate, custom bumper and several stickers including one saying: ‘A dog is for life not just for Christmas’. I purchased my wedding dress from Camilleri Paris Mode in November 2013 before actually booking the venue. It was a fishtail gown by Hong Kong based designer Lusan Mandongus in five layers of duchess satin, French lace, tulle and delicately beaded appliqués. Evoking vintage glamour and incorporating artistic details, the gown fitted my character perfectly. The groom’s and groomsmen’s suits were rented from Cefai Formal Wear in Mosta, whose service is definitely recommended. We booked the service just six weeks before the wedding and Mr Joe Cefai sewed all the men’s ties as well as a tiny bow for Martin’s 17-monthold nephew, from material I provided to match the jade green colour in the scheme. Suits were collected the Monday before the wedding, giving they guys ample time to try them on and make sure they fit well. Martin’s aunt Polly with the help of his mum Bernardette, custom made their dresses and others for bridal party members and guests at our wedding. We made sure that our 300 guests felt welcome at the wedding knowing it was going to be impossible to give each of them undivided attention. A punch table greeted the guests on arrival while a whiskey and bourbon bar, also offering delicious chocolates and cigars, was opened just before the cutting of the cake. Both were supplied by Kombi Bar. The wine bar where guests could sample seven Meridiana premium wines including Fenici, Astarte, Isis, Melqart and Nexus, proved to be very popular with our guests. Many in fact remarked it was their first time trying some of the wines and were pleasantly surprised by their quality and character. Spirits and all other beverages were supplied by Piscopo Wines & Spirits whose service before, during and after the wedding was customer-oriented and definitely to our satisfaction. As in every Maltese wedding it was important for us to have delectable food flowing throughout the night. Under the guidance of Island Caters’ staff, we took our time to carefully select items on the menu and make sure this was balanced for all our guests to enjoy. We tangoed to ‘Por Una Cabeza’ during which my twin sisters Chantelle and Michelle, and my brother’s girlfriend Sarah, played the violins and viola accompanied by the band.
22 I DO
Having my sisters perform at the wedding, despite being overwhelmed with their final year University exams and wedding preparations, was a dream come true. On the day, force six winds proved to be a challenge so my three brothers helped hold the music and stands in place as the music and dancing went on. A special moment during the wedding was when the band played ‘Xemx’, which had been the first dance song at the wedding of our friends Astrid and Andrew a year before.
The evening was over in a blink of an eye so much so that afterwards it didn’t feel real. We found ourselves counting the hours from when the wedding mass started to when we said our ‘goodbyes’. It had been a crazy but super enjoyable day thanks to our family members, friends and suppliers who helped make it happen. Special thanks go to our best man Andrew Catania for making sure all details were in place before our arrival at the venue.
As for our honeymoon, we spent a week in Tuscany visiting Florence, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano and Volterra. We plan to visit family members in Australia over the coming months. My top tip: Take on the advice of trusted friends and family members when choosing suppliers while planning your wedding day. Go for ‘tried and tested’ ones help avoid uncalled for hassle and surprises in the run up to, and on your big day!

After visiting all sorts of properties they fell in love with a small town house. After signing the contract, being the mathematical type Jennifer sat down to calculate when they would finish working on renovating the house so they could get married. Her predictions were pretty accurate, and Chris popped the question around a month after they finished the works on their new home. They decided to tie the knot on 8th September, at the parish church of Dingli, Jennifer’s hometown. The preparations for a wedding with a burgundy colour palette

began. The wedding invitations were simple, cream with burgundy calligraphy which included a poem, written by Chris, about how the couple met. Florists, Colours of the Rainbow, took care of decorating the church with white and burgundy flowers. A donation to Puttinu Cares was given. Jennifer walked up the aisle wearing an ivory silk halter neck dress with an A-line skirt by Alamango’s. Chris’s outfit was hired from Natasha’s His and Hers. To honour the tradition of the groom not seeing his bride until she gets into church, Josmar Classic Scissors was
entrusted to take care of the bridal party’s hair. Both Chris and Jennifer wanted a low-key, intimate and simple wedding so they organised a little sweets and champagne reception for their guests on the church parvis after mass. They continued to celebrate with an intimate dinner with their closest family members at Ramla Bay Resort. They preferred to focus on the new life they were going to start together instead of stressing out on the extra details. Chris and Jennifer went on a cruise to the Greek islands for their honeymoon.

t was love at first sight for Antonio and Emanuele who met nearly four years ago in Rome. They chatted briefly and shared a dance but Antonio was skeptical about anything serious or a long distance relationship. “Before I left he gave me his mobile number. I will never forget that moment he looked into my eyes and slowly his hand left my hand. I came back to Malta a few days later with Antonio always in my mind. Finally after four days I found courage to give him a call,” Emanuele recalls. They talked as if they had known each other for a lifetime and Antonio promised he will be on Emanuele’s side whatever happens, certain
he would do the same. They texted and called each other every single day before meeting each other again in Italy a few days later over Christmas. Experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions, Emanuele spent the month of December travelling back and forth and decided to accompany Antonio at his uncle’s funeral in the village of Melicuccà in Calabria. There, a giant Maltese cross greeted them as the village once belonged to the Knights of St John. A number of strange coincidences resulted; both Antonio’s and Emanuele’s best friends were named Katiusha; Emanuele’s older nephew is called Antonio and the brother Francesco. Antonio’s brother is called Francesco too!
I DO 51 31
On Emanuele’s return to Malta, they started a long distance relationship but this only lasted three months as Antonio decided to quit his job and move to Malta. Antonio was by Emanuele’s side when his parents passed away within a two-month period. They passed through tough times and were constrained to spend time away from each other despite their will. No matter what, they were meant to be together. Despite their different characters, both are very spiritual. They have always dreamt of having a family with a lot of kids and are planning to start the adoption process next
month. But in the meantime they’re busy with their little Pomeranian Boofie Trixie Ferrotti Pizzinga. Antonio and Emanuele proposed to each other on the 14th April 2014 when the Civil Union Act was approved. Emanuele bent on his knees as soon as he realised that the law was approved and Antonio followed suit soon afterwards. A black and white wedding theme was chosen. Invites matched this and had two bow ties, one of which had polka dots as did the back of the invites. Souvenirs were complementary and incorporated a
butterfly that symbolised freedom. Chrystelle at the Phoenicia Hotel helped set up the chosen venue in a special way making it feel romantic and spiritual at the same time. It was the first civil union held at the Phoenicia and the news made them even more excited about the venue. The ceremony was held in the garden with its long narrow path surrounded by flowers and plants. The gazebo served as the ideal place for the ceremony and seeing it for the first time was like finding the right wedding dress! Bouquets and decorations by Floral Décor enhanced the atmosphere and scenery.
I DO 33
The reception followed at the Phoenicia’s Green Lounge – a classic and timeless hall which fit their vision perfectly. Together with their 48 guests, Boofie the dog made it to the ceremony. One of the witnesses Caroline, surprised the couple with doves on the day. She had kept mentioning the name of the dove owner to the couple before the wedding but they did not know what to expect and were a bit scared of the prospect. “This was the funniest moment even if it actually was a romantic one,” Emanuele says. Caroline supported them constantly during preparations and Emanuele slept over at her place the night before the

wedding. In the morning she prepared breakfast with sparkling wine as a twist. Being an operatic singer, Emanuele sang ‘Tu che m’hai preso il cuor (You are my heart’s delight) from the Operetta ‘il Paese del Sorriso’. This was a surprise for Antonio and definitely an emotional moment. Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ in memory of their late parents Franco, Rita, and Maria, followed as the couple held their photos. Emanuele and Antonio paid attention to the last detail and had the wedding theme reflected throughout the wedding; from place cards to the cake, sunglasses and photo frames. They took time to choose the
perfect bands symbolising their union. On the day, Antonio and Emanuele wore tailored suits complemented by black & white buttonholes. Less than a fortnight later, on the 22nd August, the couple had a second reception in Italy to celebrate their union with family members and friends who were unable to come to Malta. Having organised two weddings in two months they had no time to plan a honeymoon but instead spent a couple of nights in the stunning suite of the Phoenicia. “It was great to walk around the place a day after the wedding. We could still feel the energy of our wedding!” they say.

THE MAKING OF
a wedding dress
I DO magazine caught up with wedding dress designer DIANNE JOSEPHINE, who for the past 25 years has been dividing her time between Malta and Australia to make wedding dresses. Her passion to make beautiful wedding gowns and making brides happy is her driving force. Dianne, you are involved in both the Maltese and Australian weddings sector. How do you manage to work in both? Since both countries are located on opposite sides of the world and the different time zones, I’m allowed to work in both countries perfectly. The most popular wedding months in Sydney are generally from October to March while the wedding season in Malta and Gozo unfolds between May and September. As long as I’m well organised, managing travel between both countries comes very easy. What keeps you working in the bridal couture business? Crafting beautiful things with my hands was always something I enjoyed doing, whether it was clothing, woodwork, painting or other forms of art. After studying fashion, art and business in college for three years, I got my first job at a bridal fashion house. There I was taught by a senior male tailor who had been making women’s clothes since the Second World War. He taught me that any properly fitted gown is more important than any embellishments it could have. If a dress fits well, then it looks well. Where do you get your inspiration? My inspiration starts with the materials. Once I lay my eyes on anything which interests me, my mind starts pattern making and creating a design. Usually I don’t put it on paper. I simply start creating. I made thousands of dresses in this way and never used a design twice. Designing combinations are endless.”
I DO 51
I DO 45
After getting engaged in Malta last year, Kylie Schembri and her husband Jean-Paul Vella tied the knot last May at St Joseph Church, Enfield, Sydney, Australia. Kylie’s stunning dress was custom designed by Dianne Josephine.
How do you turn a bride’s vision of her dream gown into an actual dress? What I do is listen to the brides’ wishes and dreams of their ideal dress, then give advice on the best way to achieve what they desire. I feel that being honest with them is the most important thing and they need to trust in my confidence of achieving what they wish for. Making sure they look their very best during the special moment in
their lives, is my priority. What keeps you motivated and passionate about your work? Seeing my clients wearing my creations and being happy on their big day gives me huge satisfaction. My work is very rewarding when I see the confidence and smile of the bride wearing her beautiful gown, makes me happy.

illian Portelli and Neil Ferris met through common friends eight years ago. Sharing a life together was always what they wished for but their dream started becoming reality after the birth of their daughter Amy in December 2009. They decided to seal the deal after Neil executed an elaborate proposal. “We went out to lunch at a friend’s restaurant to celebrate a birthday with both our families. I ordered a ‘duck salad’ in which the ring and a note lay under a small ramekin. Playing in the
background was our song Stardust by Take That, that started to skip as the kitchen staff nervously scuttled to fix it. Little did I know that amongst the salad leaves, and the commotion behind the scenes, was the question I had been longing to hear. To top it all off, Amy had her special part to play and rushed out with a bouquet of red roses,” Gillian told I Do magazine. Gillian and Neil tied the knot on 6 September last year. The underlying theme was ‘happiness’ which was interpreted through the couple’s personal touches. They wanted their happiness to spread amongst all of their
guests, conveyed through the use of vibrant colours, train rides, ice cream, masks, a caricature artist and colourful lights whilst mixing all that with local traditions. The church of choice was Ta’ Ġieżu Church in Valletta. “We were thrilled to choose the Capital city, Valletta, with its breath-taking views, amazing architecture and a perfect backdrop for a fairy tale wedding.” The newly wedded couple recalls as a highlight the moment, when their daughter Amy started walking down the aisle but paused as she got overwhelmed with emotions.
I DO 53
As soon as she spotted Neil on the altar, she rushed up the aisle into his arms and unintentionally showered him with her flowers. The wedding celebrations continued at Casino Maltese. “The venue was an easy choice because of its proximity to the church and its majestic ballroom, once again reminiscent of a princess’s
tale. After the mass they organised a surprise train ride for their guests, whilst they sipped on a refreshing Sicilian slush. The bridesmaids and the groomsmen travelled in an old Maltese bus.” The bride’s mother, Evelyn, took pride in decorating the church and the venue with numerous cascading floral
arrangements, highlighted by uplighters and modern glassware to contrast against the antique décor. “We tried to keep our big day as personal and cheerful as possible, so the love was really felt and shared by all involved. We carefully chose elements that reminded us of our childhood and put a smile on our face:
The ballroom, the train ride, the funny Maltese bus and the masks.” Gillian walked down the aisle wearing a WeddingBells classy and chic ball gown with a touch of sparkly fun! She had seen the dress in a catalogue and simply fell in love with it. Neil wore a classy evening tailcoat by Bortex. As souvenirs, guests were invited to get a caricature of themselves, done at the venue. “What better way to remember the evening and avoid being added to a drawer overflowing with old wedding souvenirs, one which we all own?!” 56 I DO
It was an evening in which Gillian and Neil could surround themselves with people they care for and enjoy and celebrate in their company. “It was what we hoped for and we believe we achieved it, the atmosphere was electric 58 I DO
and nobody wanted the night to end. It flew by like a dream.” At the end of the night the happy couple left the venue in a tuc-tuc. Their honeymoon was a gift from friends. “We made no arrangements
whatsoever; it was a gift by a close friend of ours and planned by friends too. We were handed the flights and itinerary, together with strict instructions to relax and enjoy it. We had a great time in Florence.”

Why use an architect for your project? SEE THE BIG PICTURE hether building a home from the ground up or renovating, an architect is trained to look at the property overall and how it works thereby maximising a property’s potential, reconfiguring rooms or overcoming a building’s constraints. By thinking through and drawing the design in detail, an architect can identify potential trouble spots where special attention may be required, thus minimizing surprises and controlling costs. A wellconsidered, well executed design adds value to your home. An architect can advise on ergonomic functionality (whether there is enough light, storage and warmth), design trends and technological innovations such as environmentally friendly products. Delivering low-carbon, low-energy solutions may be costly, but architects can enable such challenges to be addressed through orientation, materials, passive design and greater natural ventilation thus offering the opportunity for healthier occupants and long-term savings. Most architects approach a project with an open mind toward a broad range of methods, materials, and components. To get the most out of an architect, do not use simply as a drafting service. Intelligent communication between the client, architect and supply chain should identify where savings can be made to deliver both quality and value. There are clear benefits to solving a construction puzzle on paper prior to buying materials, busting out walls, etc and the client’s feedback during this time helps to refine and hone the specifics of the design. This type of problem solving is the architect’s expertise.

There are the obvious reasons why you might choose an architect, but there are also other, perhaps less obvious, ways a good architect will enhance your project and help to steer you through your plans, tackle challenges and provide unexpected inspiration. ARCHITECT KEITH SCHEMBRI shares some reasons with our readers.
W
MAKE THE BEST OF A SMALL SPACE Small projects, such as a compact flat, are often the ones that will really benefit from an architect’s design ideas and from the forethought an architect can provide, especially if the project is encumbered with several conflicting constraints. An architect will be able to come up with some clever tricks to make small spaces appear bigger, or help the space work more efficiently by using it for more than one purpose.
64 I DO
WORK WITH CHALLENGING SITES AND HELP COMPLIMENTING THE SURROUNDINGS A well-trained architect tailors a design to you, taking particular needs and particular locations into account. If you have purchased a site with potential for development, but where ground conditions are difficult or the environment will have an impact, an architect will be able to give you solutions and offer the best designs. In designing the property or renovation the architect will also ensure it sits well within its natural surroundings or neighbourhood, whilst giving it an identity of its own.
completion. An architect will get you through the submissions phase and manage the entire development. The fee is usually structured in one of three ways: as a reflection of the number of hours needed to do the work; as a percentage of the total construction cost; or as a fixed fee with a stipulated sum. It is always advisable to meet with an architect who will determine the scope of your project and will provide you with a fee proposal. Managing the project yourself might be cheaper, but it’s not necessarily the best value for money.
ENHANCE GENIUS LOCI – ‘THE ESSENCE OF A PLACE’ Genius loci, is a Latin phase which means ‘the essence of a place’ describes the intangible, and an architect can help enhance how a new building or alteration should feel. As architects are also trained to be interior designers, they are concerned with aesthetic issues, manipulating proportions, alignments, masses, voids, and materials to create pleasing results. Everyone has their own style, or instinctively knows what kind of ‘look’ they want. An architect, however, can help you with implementing your ideas and combining different (potentially clashing) styles.
COMMUNICATION Employing somebody to build, or remodel, your most valuable asset is always going to be a nerve-wracking relationship, but open communication helps in the process. Keep in mind that the creation of a design is a complex process and additional discussions may be needed to fine-tune proposed designs. To avoid dispute or disappointment, make sure the budget and your architect’s responsibilities are set out in binding terms from the start. And remember your responsibility to adhere to the brief and not change your mind mid-development.
SAVES YOU TIME, MONEY AND HASSLE Typically, a development begins with a feasibility study, followed by the design, the planning and building regulations submissions, tendering for construction, the build, and
