Rich jewel tones of deep pink, purple and golden yellow might be a finer option for the bride who wants a brighter and more colourful autumnal take. Take advantage of the shorter days and early nights by introducing an abundance of glowing fairy lights and candles for a cosy

A MALTESE-ITALIAN love story the couple SARAH JO CRISTIAN
&
Sarah Jo Portelli, 30, Interpreter and Cristian Sampaolesi, 39, Pharmaceutical Chemist

arah Jo and Cristian met in May 2010 at a birthday party. They started dating when he was living and working in Malta while she was travelling a lot for work. Two years later he moved to France and she followed him. An unexpected proposal happened in November 2013. “Cristian had bought the ring a few months before the proposal while he was in Rome visiting family. He was waiting for a special moment and a special place. Finally he decided that it should be in Malta where we met,” Sarah
18 I DO
Jo says. “We had gone there for a few days and he popped the question. He proposed by the sea where we had gone on our first date”. Almost two years later, a wedding with 220 people was held on the Mediterranean home-island followed by a second wedding party in Italy a week later. Sarah Jo and Cristian exchanged vows at the Church dedicated to St Catherine of Italy in Valletta. Tying history and culture, they thought the church is one of the most beautiful on the island and the centuries old Auberge de Castille, Our Lady of Victories
Church, Renzo Piano’s Parliament building, and the Upper Barraka Garden just complete the stunning picture: “It is a great setting for after mass pictures. The church is small and intimate, which was what we wanted. It is also the parish church of the Italian community in Malta and since Cristian is Italian, we felt it was the perfect choice”. In keeping with the theme of simple, classy and Mediterranean charm, the reception was held at the Gazebo Restaurant, Hilton Hotel, Portomaso.

“Our wedding reflected the things we both love: culture and the sea, which are also some of the best features Malta has to offer. Our guests, especially the foreign ones on their first visit to Malta, loved it,” Sarah Jo notes. Overlooking blue Mediterranean waters, The Gazebo restaurant offered the charm they both wanted. And they were very lucky to have perfect weather on the day: warm, breezy and star lit clear skies. Food was also very important for them and they knew it was hard to go wrong at Hilton. They sampled almost all items on the menu around a month before the wedding. Apart from finger food, guests had a choice of fish, meat and pasta from the Italian table and a selection of more exotic dishes from the Blue Elephant table. The colour scheme was ivory and powder blue. Sarah Jo’s sister- inlaw Rachel Portelli was maid of honour. She had a powder blue chiffon dress and carried a pale pink bouquet. Cristian’s nephews, Gabriele (7) and Flavio (4) were page boys. They wore matching casual siuts with matching ties. Gabriele carried the wedding rings while Flavio held a red rose which he then gave to Sarah Jo just before they exchanged vows - a sweet surprise planned by her mother-inlaw Bruna. The wedding dress was made out of satin with beading on the waist. It had a chapel train and a lace fingertip veil which Sarah Jo wanted to wear for as long as possible during the reception.
20 I DO
This was custom made by Joe Parnis who also did the dresses for the maid of honour and the bride’s mother. The fine laces and materials were handpicked from Gaudi by JB Stores. She knew from the start that she wanted a simple, elegant and above all comfortable wedding dress. It had to reflect her usual style, nothing too fancy, frilly or big. She wanted to be herself on her wedding day and found what she was looking for in France. Her parents were visiting them in Strasbourg and they decided to have a look at some wedding dresses. She was not expecting to find the dress at all but somehow she did. Together with her mum, she shortlisted two dresses and called her father to come give his opinion since he works in the clothing industry and had accompanied them to several shops. The dress came with a detachable chapel train which was perfect as she could remove it after taking photos at the venue. A round bouquet of white roses held with a sash made out of a cutting from her mother’s lace wedding dress, complemented her look. Wedding flowers were trusted in the able hands of Anna Zammit from Naxxar, who has more than 20 years experience in flower arranging. They opted for all white flowers
for the church and kept everything simple, since the church is already very beautiful. At the venue, wicker hearts hung from the olive trees and paper lanterns with cut out hearts were scattered all around. Candles meanwhile created an intimate, charming atmosphere. Sarah Jo explains that her aunt Stefania Micallef took time to help decorate the cake and this made it all the more special. The three-tier, almond and bacio cake was prepared by Hilton staff but Aunt Stefania started working on the sugar paste flowers a few months before the wedding. The all white cake had a string of edible pearls around each tier and delicate flowers dusted in a light pink shimmer. Looking back on their special day, the couple reflect: “Our wedding was quite multicultural since we had many foreign guests, Italian family and friends, but also our friends living in Strasbourg (France) who come from many different countries all over Europe but also from further away countries like Vietnam. Having our friends come from abroad meant a lot to us”. Sarah Jo and Cristian danced to Jovanotti’s ‘A Te’ - one of Sarah Jo’s favourite songs which they chose especially because their language of communication is Italian.
Fiona performed in church while Andreana and her band provided the perfect jazzy atmosphere to fit the wedding setting. Both were booked through Tunin Entertainment. Wedding invitations were cream colored, simple, one page cards - an indication of the wedding style. Instead of the souvenirs they opted to give a donation to Puttinu Cares Foundation. Pink and white perlini, in various flavours, were also given out in cream boxes closed with powder blue satin ribbons. White gold wedding bands chosen in Italy were exchanged. This day was truly special and meaningful to the couple in several ways: “We enjoyed the whole wedding so it is hard to choose just one highlight… The ceremony was special from beginning till the end. It was in Maltese and Italian with songs in English, Maltese and Italian. The group photo in front of the church was fun as was Cristian’s funny speech at the reception… It ended with some beautiful and moving words to his new wife!” All suits, including the groom’s attire, were rented from Bortex whose service they describe as “excellent”. Cristian’s parentsin-law gave him a pair of beautiful cufflinks with the Maltese cross on them as a token and he feels they completed the look.
I DO 23
They advise future brides and grooms to really enjoy the wedding day: “Despite the stress while planning the wedding when the day came we really enjoyed and savoured every minute of it from the beginning till the end”. They also believe that having someone reliable in charge proved to be very important. The day went smoothly with the help of an excellent wedding day organiser who is a team member of Jurgen Briffa & Co Wedding Organiser. Sarah Jo’s brother Mark, her witness, also helped out with some of the logistics. They marked their union in Italy during a blessing of the rings ceremony. Their parents also renewed their vows which made the ceremony exceptional. A traditional Italian wedding dinner, during which they projected a slide show of the wedding photos and a mini film of the wedding ceremony, followed. In Italy too they were honoured by the presence of some of their best friends who travelled for the occasion. Just after the wedding, they enjoyed a honeymoon weekend at Castel Gandolfo, Rome. They booked a room with a view over the lake which was perfect to relax and enjoy good food after months of planning. They honeymooned in Sri Lanka over Christmas and New Year an 18 day cultural and beach tour with a little bit of adventure also covering most of Sri Lanka – they had a private chauffer guide for the whole journey taking them to see the main attractions in comfort – Anuradhapura, Sigiriya Rock, Dambulla cave temples, Pinnawala elephant orphanage, Botanical Gardens, Tea Plantations, Horton plains nature reserve, waterfalls, elephant & leopard safari in Yala, whale watching and ending up with the last few days relaxing in a beach resort. Staff Travel took care of all the planning & honeymoon travel arrangements.

opular singer and vocal coach Priscilla Psaila tied the knot with her beloved Antonio Giordano last year. Their wedding night might well be remembered by guests for the singing and dancing to flamboyant Neapolitan music as well as an event star-studded with Maltese celebrities. In August 2012, Priscilla was in Italy participating in a singing contest when she and her friend Antonio Muscat, decided to take a break from the contest preparations by relaxing on the beach of Maiori. It was there that she met pizzaiolo, Antonio. At first she thought it was just a friendship but as time went by their relationship developed further. Antonio visited Priscilla in Malta for a month that following September. They kept going to and fro between Malta and Italy until February 2013. Antonio decided to leave his homeland and settle in Malta. Of course, Priscilla was the happiest woman on earth! As their relationship blossomed they started considering getting married. Deciding whether to do it in Italy or Malta was a tough choice. It was in 2014 when Antonio’s family members came over for a holiday in Malta that the groom’s sister suggested that they tie the knot in Malta, since both are settled here now. It was what they wanted to hear so the preparations for a wedding in Malta began. They tied the knot on the eve of a local public holiday, 7 September. However, they still organised another small wedding for Antonio’s family in Naples that following October. Guests received very simple white and silver invitations prior to the wedding. Glass candle holders which can also be used as a pen holders were given as souvenirs.

Since both love the old silent city, the matrimonial mass was held at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mdina. The reception was held at Osbourne Caterer’s Villa Arrigo in Naxxar, where the bride was brought up. Villa Arrigo was the perfect venue since it offered both indoor and outdoor space for the unpredictable September weather and also because it could comfortably host the couple’s 600 guests, including around 60 children who attend Priscilla’s music school. Osbourne Caterers also took care of the catering which included an eclectic mix of traditional Maltese and Neapolitan food, as well as the drinks and wedding cake.

Both the church and venue were decorated with simple white dÊcor evoking a dreamy bridal atmosphere. The bride wore the dress of her dreams to walk up the aisle. It was a strapless, heart shaped, tight fitting lace gown by Ivory and Co, themed with shoes by Eva Marie Bridal Exclusive and make up by make-up artist Justin Brincat to complete the bridal look. A memorable moment for the couple was when a special friend of the couple, tenor Joseph Calleja sang La Vie en Rose for the couple’s first dance.
32 I DO
The Spiteri Lucas seven piece band played a varied repertoire that appealed to everyone and ensured the guests were having fun, dancing and singing to a host of tunes from yesterday and today. Local singers and media personalities, friends of the couple, joined in to sing and dance to Neapolitan music, honouring the groom’s family and origins. All of Priscilla and Antonio’s guests danced the night away, making it a fantastic and unforgettable night! The special day was captured on beautiful photos taken by Gino Galea photo artist. The newlyweds went to Mauritius and Dubai for their honeymoon. The trip was organised for them by Rocs Travel.

he soft and glowy sunset lighting up the fortifications surrounding Marsamxetto served as the perfect backdrop for Diane Depasquale and Jurgen Mifsud’s wedding. The couple exchanged their wedding vows during a perfect October evening as fjakkoli flickered on the bastions overlooking Manoel Island. Diane and Jurgen met online and chatted for a while until Jurgen asked Diane out on a date. It was Winter and they went to a wine bar. They laughed heartily as when Jurgen made the reservation he asked for a table near the fire place only to realise that the fireplace was fake. Diane still gave her future husband full points for trying to make their date
romantic. They felt a connection straight away and never looked back. Jurgen proposed to Diane on their first anniversary while on a weekend break in Gozo. With happy tears in her eyes, she said yes during a romantic dinner at Ta’ Frenc restaurant. They both fell in love with the breath taking views of Manoel Island and Marsamxetto Harbour as they visited the Bastions Terrace at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, while looking for the perfect venue for a small and intimate wedding. The venue sounded perfect for an October wedding ceremony and reception, with a modern and colourful theme. Hues of blue were used as a colour palette. TWO (Tunin Wedding Organisation) helped them
to organise the wedding. Guests received navy blue invitations decorated with silver ribbon. As souvenirs, white candle holders decorated with lace were given out. Bouquets of fuchsia and colourful flowers were scattered around the venue and white flowing sheer drapes decorated the venue to achieve a superbly romantic atmosphere. A pink carpet supplied by G & G events was placed along the aisle and the bastions were covered with flickering fjakkoli. The bride wore a strapless mermaid dress embellished with silver beading. Diane’s parents and sisters helped her choose the gown. She knew it was the one after trying on a few dresses.
I DO 39
The groom wore a navy blue suit to match the recurrent theme. A particularly emotional moment came during the wedding ceremony when Diane’s ten-year-old daughter Shannon, who lost her mobility around four years ago, walked up the aisle hand in hand with her aunties. The bride and groom read vows they had written for each other. Jurgen even read vows to Shannon. The wedding party and most of the guests were in tears during the special moment. Music by Louisa and Patrick Wirth, supplied by Tunin Entertainment, made the atmosphere during the ceremony extra special. The bride and groom exchanged wedding rings by GB Jewellers. Jurgen’s is made from a
white and yellow gold combination, whilst Diane’s is a white gold ring with a darted design all around to give a small diamond effect. After the ceremony, the 250 guests enjoyed catering by the Grand Hotel Excelsior and cocktails by Damian’s Mobile Cocktail and Wine Bar. For their first dance, DJ Ramon Francalanza, supplied by Tunin Entertainment, played Ed Sheeran’s song Thinking Out Loud and then on to Marry you by Bruno Mars, for the couple’s first dance. TWO and G & G Events are sister companies of Tunin Entertainment Limited. They practiced well and attended dance lessons at Plethora Dance Studio in the run up to their big day, to achieve that perfect first wedding dance. At the end of the dance,
the couple ran towards Diane’s daughter Shannon to help her towards the dance floor, as everyone cheered them on. Diane and Jurgen recommend other couples to just enjoy their wedding day come rain or shine. They enjoyed their wedding so much that they were the last ones to leave the venue. The newlyweds went to Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore for their honeymoon. Jurgen was in safe hands as Diane has extensive knowledge and many years of experience in organising long haul holidays and honeymoons. She works with Royal Travel Ltd, as a Luxury Cruises & Long Haul Specialist. She took care of all the arrangements and ensured all the details were taken care of like she would do with her clients.

Wedding planner Carmelino Refalo was roped in to help them with the whirlwind preparations for an October seated wedding, on a Sunday morning. Without Mr Refalo’s help, Edwina and Ino Mario wouldn’t have put together the wedding on their own. Next on the list was for Edwina to find the dress-to-be. She started her search online and fell in love with a satin number, the dress of her dreams, while browsing on Wedding Bells website. She promptly set an appointment with Marquita Kemper aiming to try on the dream dress. The dress was available in her size and fit the bride perfectly.
OUR CHIC love story I DO 45
It was a very classic and chic dress with a princess skirt. The dress was themed with a cathedral veil with French lace and a pretty tiara. Edwina’s aunt Mary Xuereb of Mary’s Hair Salon took care of the bridal party’s hair styling. Ino Mario’s groom textured suit was purchased from Bortex as well as those of the male wedding party. He also wore a red bow, he had bought while on holiday in Taormina. Their son, the page boy, was a cute sight wearing a pair of linen trousers from John Lewis, paired with a Gant shirt, suspenders and bow. Fashion designer Luke Azzopardi was hired to design the dresses for the bridesmaids and flower girls. The material was purchased from Camilleri Paris Mode. Mrs Margot Portelli, owner of Hand Creations by Margot helped the couple design their personalised wedding invitations. With her help and guidance, they were very happy to present their guests with elegant wedding invitations decorated with flocked designed paper and enhanced with a touch of satin. Hand Creations by Margot also provided the table plan and table numbers for the venue and also laser cut favour boxes with scented candles.

The ceremony was held at Our Lady of Loreto Church. It is also the old parish church of Ghajnsielem, the village where the bride was raised. The couple love the church’s interior décor, especially the sacred paintings by Giuseppi Calí. Florist Nathaline Mercieca was hired to take care of the floral décor, both at the church and venue. Soprano Rita Dimech sang mass hymns accompanied by an orchestra during mass. President Emeritus Dr Edward Fenech Adami was witness for the bride while the groom’s brother Dr Joe Ettiene Abela was the

witness for the groom. It was the bride’s childhood dream to have old family friend, Dr Fenech Adami as the witness of her marriage. She kept her promise with Dr Fenech Adami after she asked him to be her witness when she was just a child and hadn’t even met the man of her dreams. The former President was happy to honour the bride’s dream. The Ballroom of the Grand Hotel was the venue for the reception. It was perfect to host the couple’s 270 guests. Interior decorator Josiana Buttigieg was hired to handle the décor at the venue. She managed
to turn it into a fairy tale venue, paying a lot of attention to detail. Ino Mario surprised his new wife by bringing over the Wintermood’s frontman Ivan Grech to sing Xemx, the bride’s favourite song and the music for the newlyweds’ first dance. The couple cut the wedding cake right after the dance before the guests danced to music played by a DJ. After the wedding, the couple and their son spent a few days sightseeing and relaxing in the Italian city of Rome and its surroundings.

arah and Edward met via hi5 and chatted for about two months prior to meeting. Although he liked her instantly, she didn’t intend to date him but just wanted to meet face to face. “The first time we met I laughed so hard I actually went home with my jaws and tummy aching! From then on we started our adventure together,” she recalls. Eventually they started working on their new home and six years into their relationship they thought it would be nice to actually tie the knot. Sarah always made it clear that even though they both wanted to get married she still really wished for a proposal. One day whilst walking to Mdina in the middle of one of Edward’s joking moments, he went down on one knee (pretending to have slipped as it had rained heavily so the road was really wet), opened the ring box and popped the question. “The place was dark as most of the lights in the public garden just outside Mdina gate where out and the box had this little LED light which made the ring look so shiny. It was truly magical!” Sarah says.
They tied the knot at St Mark’s Church in Rabat as Edward spent his childhood serving as an altar boy there. Mass was truly the highlight of their day as they were surrounded by a lot of friends and family. In fact they never thought so many people would go to mass, and this really meant a lot for them: “We actually couldn’t stop smiling (because) we were so happy”. They chose a shabby chic theme and held their reception at the Montekristo Roof Terrace which provided an intimate setting. Paper lanterns were hung around the venue to create a warmer atmosphere. Damian’s Mobile Cocktail & Wine Bar prepared refreshing cocktails for the guests all along the night. Personal touches were present throughout. Instead of the usual pre-wedding portrait, at the venue entrance they hung several photos of themselves with friends and close family. Messages written on wood were placed around the venue, and the flower girl held a sign reading ‘Edward here comes your love’ as she walked into church. After mass, long sparklers with a small note reading “let love sparkle”, were given out to guests. Edward designed the invitations with an infinity sign and the ring box had the same motif hand drawn to match. Invitations were printed on a square card using a double layer for a sturdy effect. The front card was cream and all wording was printed in brown ink while the back was blue, matching the bridesmaid dresses. Text was printed in transparent gloss ink simply showing their names and the wedding date. All invites were personalised with names printed on the invites themselves. The same concept was applied to thank you notes and souvenir tags. As for souvenirs, they gave out perlini in a small container in the shape of a gift box using burlap string to complement the theme. A note attached to the string read that a donation was made to the Malta Hospice Movement instead of traditional souvenirs. This charity was chosen after a close family member who passed away due to cancer had found their services very beneficial. The cake topper, which showed a bride and groom on a vespa, was modified to resemble their own motorbike, which they love. As for guestbook, they used a wooden slab on which messages were written. This was turned into a coffee table so that they can enjoy reading the wedding messages easily. The florist prepared three arrangements all in white for the church and had the benches decorated with very minimal bunches of gypsophila tied with burlap ribbon.

Sarah recalls that the walk to the car before mass was pretty funny. As her parents live in a narrow road, the bridal party planned to walk several metres towards the car. But as they were leaving the house, someone decided to wash the roof and water came trickling down the street: “The next door neighbours were so sweet. They all tried their best to dry the water so that my dress won’t get wet. I just got hold of my dress and walked off with the help of mum and my maid of honor. I was pretty impressed; I did not panic at all!” She recalls that a lot of people waved and cheered from their doorstep or roof tops creating the typical bridal atmosphere of traditional villages. Sarah wore a WeddingBells plain ball
gown with multiple layers of soft organza giving it a princessy feel. It also had a dainty belt with embellishments to add a touch of detail. The groom’s attire was rented from Bortex. Edward slid a plain white gold wedding band with 5 small stones on Sarah’s finger while Edward wears his late father’s plain gold wedding band and so carries something so important with him every day. They danced to ‘A whole new world’ from Aladdin- as the band Crosswalk one of Tunin Entertainment exclusive bands entertained their 375 guests. A sizeable crowd smiled on as they held each other and besides enjoying the moment, the happy faces on the pictures, video trailer and video rekindles the memory every time.

For Sarah and Edward, the wedding was a very important step in their relationship. Both practicing Catholics, it truly meant a new chapter in their life as a couple: “Having God’s blessing meant a lot to us. Up until the wedding day we were both still living at our parents’ houses and so the wedding day signified a new step in our life as it also meant living together as one”. Sharing a piece of advice they note that

should couples not use the service of a wedding planner, a wedding planning book will come in very handy as this helps keep on track with all the reservations and tiny details. It is also important to have a very good and responsible bridal party and best man together with a good function manager. Sarah and Edward honeymooned in North America; San Francisco, Nappa Valley, and Yosemite among others, driving along the
famous Route 66 along the Pacific all the way to Los Angeles. They stopped over at different villages along the coast including San Diego and crossed the desert towards Las Vegas before taking a flight to New York. Later they travelled to Cancun (in Mexico) where they stayed in a resort for 4 nights before flying back home. Royal Travel did an exceptional job helping them plan it all. Their only job was to book the excursions.

ake proposed to Nicolette on New Year’s Eve 2012 after having dated her for three months. The pair had met over a blind date set up by a mutual friend. Two-and-a-half years later, they enjoyed a classic wedding with lots of surprises. A colour palette of burgundy and pearl for their 11th July wedding. Nuptial mass was held at Attard parish church as both like typical Maltese churches. Nicolette’s brother, Matthew of Coronation Candles, handmade a unity candle for this special occasion. The wedding reception for 470 guests was held at the luscious gardens of Osborne Caterer’s Villa Arrigo. The couple had fallen in love with the venue immediately
especially with its lower gardens. They enhanced its natural elements by bringing in swans which served as an attraction. Lots of flowers were used to decorate the venue to achieve a classic setup with a modern twist. Candles placed in jars hanging from trees were used to add to the romantic atmosphere. An old refurbished wooden window was used so guests could pin postcards with well wishes to it, instead of the traditional guest book. Personalised napkins which had the couples’ names and wedding date printed on them were given out with the food. A selection of single malt whiskeys was offered to guests during the after party. All of Nicolette’s grandparents were involved in the wedding since they were
lucky to still have them. As souvenirs, the guests received handmade scented candles custom made by the bride’s brother. The newlyweds danced to Savage Garden’s song ‘I knew I loved you’ which reminds them of the early days of their romance. The bride wore a mermaid Pronovias dress complemented with a cathedral veil, a ganutell head-piece made by Nicolette’s grandmother and a lovely bouquet of burgundy roses. A dress designed by Jesmond Sammut of YesusDeMaris served as her going away outfit. The groom wore a tailor-made Gagliardi suit from Bortex. Nicolette and Jake honeymooned in Croatia and enjoyed a chartered mini-cruise around the Croatian archipelago.
