FROM MORIBUND TO MILLE MIGLIA – THORNLEY KELHAM RESURRECTS DERELICT LANCIA FOR WORLD’S PREMIER CLASSIC RALLY A 1953 LANCIA AURELIA B20 GT SERIES 3 HAS BEEN GIVEN A NEW LEASE OF LIFE BY LEADING RESTORATION SPECIALISTS THORNLEY KELHAM. THE PREVIOUSLY DECAYING CLASSIC HAS BEEN TAKEN FROM AN ALMOST UNSALVAGEABLE RESTORATION CONDITION TO FACTORY FRESH OVER A TWOAND-A-HALF-YEAR PERIOD AND HAS NOW BEEN ACCEPTED INTO ARGUABLY THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS CLASSIC CAR RALLY OF ALL – THE MILLE MIGLIA.

H

aving restored a considerable number of Aurelias in the past, Thornley Kelham’s expertise in, and understanding of these models and their intricacies enabled their team to resurrect a vehicle that many others would have deemed beyond restoration. The 1953 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT Series 3 was discovered in incredibly poor condition in the USA, with a staggering amount of rust plaguing the car. The usual rust points of these vehicles namely floor pans, sills and door bottoms – had been totally ravaged by years left exposed to the elements. So severe was the problem that even the top of the wings had rusted through, the

transmission tunnel had completely eroded, and the body required strengthening prior to being media blasted as the car had so little structural integrity. Despite the condition of the vehicle, Thornley Kelham’s customer was determined to see the Aurelia resurrected and play his part in saving this rare car. The tired body was fully restored, in many cases by fabricating entirely new panels. A considerable portion of the lower body had to be fabricated whilst maintaining factory curvatures and shut lines, amongst myriad other repairs before moving onto Thornley Kelham’s paintshop to be prepared and painted in the original beige colour, as per the factory build sheet. Given the owner’s aspirations to compete in the Mille Miglia, and the awful condition of the original seat frames, Thornley Kelham fabricated a set of its Rally De Corsa style seats and also carried out a common period competition upgrades of a Nardi floor shift, Nardi bonnet scoop and Nardi twin carburettors and Borrani “bi-metallic” wheels. Every component of the car was restored or replaced over a period of two and a half years, with the end result being a box fresh and period correct Aurelia – a far cry from the condition it entered the TK facility in. Once completed, the owner’s maiden journey in the resurrected Aurelia was a 500-mile weekend of fault-free driving, testament to the thorough road testing and quality checks carried out prior to delivery. The next adventure for the car will be Mille Miglia. Thornley Kelham will provide a dedicated support team throughout the event with two mechanics allocated to the car at all times, allowing the owner to fully focus on the joy of driving and ensuring the car remains in superb order throughout the gruelling event.

MOTORSPORT WITH ELECTRIC DRIVE DOUBLE WORLD PREMIERE FOR THE NEW VOLKSWAGEN ID. R

• FIRST PREMIERE: THE CONSISTENTLY AND CONTINUOUSLY DEVELOPED VERSION OF THE FULLY ELECTRIC POWERED VOLKSWAGEN ID. R IS PRESENTED • THE ELECTRIC LAP RECORD ON THE NÜRBURGRING IS THE DECLARED AIM FOR THE ID. olkswagen has presented the continuously developed version of the ID. R, the fully electric race car. The racing flagship of the future fully electric product family from Volkswagen is to set a new lap record for electric vehicles on the 20.832-kilometre-long Nordschleife. In order for driver Romain Dumas to undercut the until-now best time of 6:45.90 minutes, Volkswagen Motorsport has consistently and continuously developed the ID. R. On 25 April, the ID. R is to complete its first test on the NürburgringNordschleife. Virtually speaking, the ID. R will already drive its first laps from today; for the first time, a race car will also be presented at the same time in a near-reality computer simulation that can be downloaded free of charge. “The ID. R’s mission to be the spearhead of the fully electric ID. product family from Volkswagen continues in full force,” says Sven Smeets, Volkswagen Motorsport Director. “Once again, this time in 2019, the ID. R will demonstrate the great potential of electric drive, combining emissions-free technology with true emotion. The NürburgringNordschleife is the next step on the journey of the ID. R, a car that provides a symbol of the future significance of electric drive in all of motorsport at Volkswagen. To see the ID. R take to this legendary race track for the first time will be a moment guaranteed to give you goose bumps.” The 500 kW (680 PS) electric drive of the ID. R has been adapted to the world-unique track characteristics of the Nordschleife. Two lithium-ion battery blocks serve as energy storage on board the ID. R, which were constructed with expertise from Volkswagen’s

production development and whose structure is comparable to the technology that is to be used in the future production vehicles from the ID. family.

impressive. I can’t wait to finally drive the ID. R on the Nordschleife,” says Dumas.

Digital world premiere: drive the ID. R on the Nordschleife by yourself But not only will Dumas have the opportunity to drive the ID.

R on the Nordschleife. Racing fans can as of now compare themselves to the pro – virtually speaking, that is. On the occasion of the world premiere of the continuously developed ID. R, Volkswagen has launched an online racing simulation for the free-to-play racing simulator RaceRoom, in which the gamer

himself/herself can take to the 20.832-kilometre Nordschleife in the ID. R and can compete with Romain Dumas – with the option to use virtual reality glasses as well. The computer vehicle model was created based on original ID. R data, while the engineers from Volkswagen Motorsport have given the game developers deep insights into the driving dynamics of the electric racing car in order to make the driving experience as realistic as possible on a home computer. All information can be found here: www.raceroom.com/volkswagen

The most striking feature of the evolved version of the ID. R is the aerodynamics designed for a higher top speed. “Last year, the many- cornered hill-climb track and the thin air at Pikes Peak demanded maximum downforce,” explains FrançoisXavier Demaison, Technical Director of Volkswagen Motorsport. “On the Nordschleife lap, the ID. R will reach an average speed of more than 180 km/h – with a top speed on the straight of up to 270 km/h. We have therefore developed a completely new aerodynamic package with DRS (Drag Reduction System), known from Formula 1, as well as optimised the energy management, which controls the power output of the two electric motors and energy recovery under braking.”

Great development strides since the 2018 competitive debut Romain Dumas knows the Nürburgring-Nordschleife like hardly anyone else. The Frenchman has already won the famous 24-hour race four times. Nevertheless, he will treat the track with a lot of respect as he goes into the upcoming first test run. “I have already driven the Nordschleife with the ID. R on the simulator countless times. But the true feeling from the incredibly high cornering speeds you only get when you’re on the actual track. The extent to which the ID. R has been continuously developed compared to 2018 is April 2019 | motoring 03

THE NEW AUDI A6 BLACK EDITIONS A SHADE MORE APPEALING Luxury compact SUV certified to Real Driving Emissions step 2 (RDE2) ahead of legislation coming into force • NEW TOP TIER SPECIFICATION FOR THE A6 SALOON AND AVANT RANGE • BUILDS ON S LINE MODEL EQUIPMENT WITH BLACK EXTERIOR DETAILING, PRIVACY GLASS AND LARGER WHEELS FINISHED IN MATT TITANIUM

D

arkness falls on the Audi A6 range again this month as the popular Black Edition specification becomes available for the latest generation Saloon and Avant models. Already a firm favourite with customers ordering the previous generation model, the new top tier A6 specification can be combined with all engines in the new range. Building on the foundations of the performancefocused S line specification, the Black Editions upgrade from a 19-inch wheel to a gloss turned 20-inch V-spoke design in matt titanium. They also feature a black finish for the radiator grille surround, front air intakes, door mirror housings and rear diffuser, plus the roof rails in Avant models. Privacy glass for the rear windows also helps to set the tone. All the mild hybrid powertrains in the range can be combined with the new specification, from the 204PS and 245PS four-cylinder engines powering the 40 TDI and 45 TFSI through to the 286PS and 340PS six cylinder options

in the 50 TDI and 55 TFSI. The dark undertones complement an already extensive S line equipment list which enhances the body with exclusive front and rear styling applications, lowers it onto tauter sport suspension and adds even more technical appeal through an upgrade from the standard LED headlights to segmented Matrix LED units capable of diverting their beams around leading or oncoming traffic.

Purposeful and technologically in tune Inside, front sport seats in leather and Alcantara, a perforated leather multifunction sport steering wheel with shift paddles and dark brushed aluminium inlays lend a suitably sporting air, and the fully digital MMI touch response operating concept provides the ahead-of-its-time technological sophistication that is synonymous with Vorsprung durch Technik. Two full HD colour

touch screen displays, the upper measuring 8.8 inches in diameter and the lower 8.6 inches, form the basis of the MMI touch response concept, and work in conjunction with a seven-inch full-colour Driver Information System in the instrument binnacle. Between them these screens provide access to key smartphone functions for the standard Audi Smartphone Interface, present mapping and traffic information from the standard MMI Navigation system, display music track and radio station listings on behalf of the Audi Radio Plus module and Audi Music Interface and beam info such as local fuel pricing, news and weather updates into the car from the web via the Audi connect service. Prospective Black Edition drivers looking to take the on-board technology to the next level can opt for the Technology Pack which brings the upgraded MMI Navigation Plus system with Google Earth mapping, personal route assistance and enhanced natural voice recognition, plus a larger 10.1-inch upper MMI screen, the fully digital Audi Virtual Cockpit and the Audi Phone Box with wireless charging for QI-enabled compatible phones. Comfort and convenience on board can be enhanced further still by options such as powered door closure, acoustic glazing and a 1,920-watt Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system. On a more fundamental level, numerous electronic driver assistants can also be drafted in to make daily use easier for the driver. Several of the key aids, including adaptive cruise assist, side assist, camerabased traffic sign recognition and high beam assist, are grouped into cost-effective Tour and City Assist option packs.

HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP INTRODUCES INDUSTRY-FIRST SMARTPHONE BASED EV PERFORMANCE CONTROL TECHNOLOGY • FUTURE KIA VEHICLES WILL FEATURE TECHNOLOGY WHICH ALLOWS DRIVERS TO ADJUST SEVEN MAJOR PERFORMANCE FEATURES THROUGH SMARTPHONES • USER CUSTOM SETTINGS COULD BE SHARED ONLINE WHILE CUSTOMER INFORMATION IS PROTECTED BY THE BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY • THE TECHNOLOGY WILL BE IMPLEMENTED ON FUTURE KIA AND HYUNDAI VEHICLES yundai Motor Group announced development of ‘smartphone-electric vehicle pairing based performance adjustment technology,’ which allows users to customise primary functions through a smartphone application – an industry-first innovation. Drivers can use this technology to adjust seven performance features including the maximum torque output of the motor, ignition, acceleration and deceleration abilities, regenerative braking capacity, maximum speed limit, responsiveness, and energy use on climate control. As electric vehicles continually expand their market share, especially in rental or car-sharing industries, the new technology will allow drivers to use their custom

settings in whichever electric vehicle they drive by downloading their profile from the server. The application provides optimised settings for a designated destination by analysing the remaining distance and electric energy requirement. It can also accommodate sportier driving by recommending tailored performance settings. Beyond the driver’s seat, users can share their customisation settings online as well as try out other users’ custom settings. Customers can also apply recommended settings by the brands based on the condition of roads, from country roads to the city center or mountain ranges. Hyundai Motor Group will utilise blockchain technology to prevent security

issues while users upload and share their custom settings on the server. In the process of uploading and sharing custom settings, the system encrypts major performance parameters in a blockchain network by creating new data blocks and stores them in the distributed data storage system to block unauthorised manipulation. Hyundai Motor Group’s ‘smartphone vehicle pairing-based performance adjustment technology’ is possible due to electric vehicles’ distinctive properties which set them apart from combustion engine vehicles. Zero-emission vehicles offer unique freedom to modify the drive experience because altering performance doesn’t

change the carbon footprint. As such, electric vehicles provide drivers more leeway in applying such technology. “As Hyundai Motor Group is planning to deploy 44 eco-friendly models by year 2025, including 23 electric vehicles, we see the potential of technologies and services inherent in non-combustion vehicles,” said research fellow JeongSoo Eo from Hyundai Motor Group. “By developing paradigmshifting mobility technology like this one, we will continue to strive to improve user experience for electric vehicles customised to individual preferences.” The technology is expected to be implemented in future Kia and Hyundai vehicles.

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE THE FIRST LUXURY COMPACT SUV TO COMPLY TO STRICTER RDE2 EMISSIONS TESTS Luxury compact SUV certified to Real Driving Emissions step 2 (RDE2) ahead of legislation coming into force • STRICTER CERTIFICATION: NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE IS CERTIFIED UNDER TIGHTER NOX LIMITS LAID DOWN BY EURO 6D-FINAL STANDARDS • EARLY APPROVAL: FIRST LUXURY COMPACT SUV TO COMPLY TO MORE STRINGENT SECOND PHASE OF REAL DRIVING EMISSIONS STANDARDS (RDE2) – AHEAD OF 2020 INTRODUCTION FOR NEW MODELS • SMART ENGINE TECHNOLOGIES: INTELLIGENT EXHAUST MONITORS AND TREATS NOX EMISSIONS, MAKING LATEST D150 MANUAL FRONT WHEEL DRIVE COMPARABLE TO A PETROL ENGINE, WHILE OFFERING THE FUEL CONSUMPTION AND CO2 BENEFITS OF A DIESEL VEHICLE

T

he new Range Rover Evoque has become the first luxury compact SUV to be certified under stringent new NOx emissions targets, Real Driving Emissions stage 2 (RDE2), ahead of the official legislative introduction for new models in January 2020. All Jaguar and Land Rover models already meet the standards required by the first phase of the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) testing procedure, which came into effect in September 2018. However, the new Range Rover Evoque in D150 manual Front Wheel Drive (FWD) trim, now complies with the even more rigorous second phase requirements (RDE2). This states that the vehicle must emit 80mg/km or less of NOx, making the new Evoque the first luxury compact SUV to be certified more than a year ahead of RDE2’s scheduled implementation on all new vehicles by 2020. Nick Rogers, Executive Director of Product Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “Meeting the standards for this certification almost two years ahead of schedule is a real achievement and a result of collaboration within our engineering team to develop advanced engine and exhaust technologies. The new Range Rover Evoque uses a low-friction engine design which has reduced real-world driving NOx emissions by 90% since 2010, demonstrating vast

progress for Jaguar Land Rover. Independent groups, including AIR Index (Allow Independent Road-testing) and ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club), are verifying that our diesels are some of the cleanest available.”

This early certification has been achieved using advanced engine and exhaust technologies. The system injects AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid into the exhaust gas, where it reacts with the NOx and converts it into harmless nitrogen and water, ensuring that the Ingenium diesels comply with the stringent Euro6d-Final limits. With its low-friction engine design, NOx emissions are also minimised during warm-up as the vehicle reaches optimum temperature. In addition, efficient Diesel Particulate Filters are neatly integrated into the after-treatment system and trap 99.9 per cent of soot as the exhaust gas passes through them. As part of the RDE testing protocols, new vehicles are put through a series of tests designed to reflect real world driving more accurately. This can include various combinations of different driving styles, varying vehicle loads to take into account passengers and luggage, cold starts, warmer weather conditions and undulating routes. In addition to RDE2 compliance on the D150 manual FWD variant, improvements to CO2 emissions across

the new Range Rover Evoque range have been achieved through the addition of enhanced Active Vanes that improve aerodynamic efficiency by 14 per cent. These remain closed during the engine’s warm up phase, allowing it to reach operating temperature more quickly, but also close in conditions when additional cooling is no longer required – such as a steady-state cruise – which also reduces drag. The introduction of Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology improves emissions further, harvesting energy normally lost during deceleration, which can then be redeployed as torque to assist the engine under acceleration. RDE2 compliance is the latest evidence of the continuous work Jaguar Land Rover is doing to optimise the performance, efficiency and emissions of its range of powertrain options. Not only does this extend to petrol and diesel variants, but also the introduction of Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and MHEV models – proof of Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to offering an electrified option on all new vehicles from 2020. LIFE-SIZE LEGO HONDA CIVIC TYPE R MAKES ITS DEBUT • THE LEGO CIVIC TYPE R IS AN EXACT SCALE REPLICA OF THE MULTI AWARDWINNING HONDA HOT HATCH • THE LEGO CAR TOOK OVER 1,300 HOURS AND A CREW OF NINE TO HAND-BUILD • OVER 320,000 LEGO BRICKS WERE USED IN CONSTRUCTION • THE LEGO CAR RIVALS THE WEIGHT OF THE ACTUAL CIVIC TYPE R AT JUST OVER 1,300KG • THE LEGO CAR HAS FUNCTIONING LIGHTS INCLUDING BRAKE, FOG AND HEADLIGHTS OPERATED BY AN IPAD

O

ne of the most iconic cars in the current Honda lineup, the Civic Type R, has been transformed into a life-size LEGO model ahead of the much anticipated ‘LEGO MASTERS’ show airing on Channel Nine from 28th April. The passionate team behind the creation, led by global expert Ryan McNaught – LEGO Certified Professional – used more than 320,000 LEGO bricks in the build and took over 1,300 hours with a team of nine assembling each brick by hand. Mr. McNaught expressed some exciting but technical challenges in building the Type R due to the unique shape and design of the vehicle – elements that attract

award recognition worldwide. “We’ve loved the challenge of this project. The car is shaped with a considerable amount of curved lines, making it a tough but interesting build. From the working lights and indicators to intricate LEGO Honda logos, the detail on the model has been a fun one for us to work on”, said Mr. McNaught. A steel frame supports the structure of LEGO bricks, all glued together and is built completely by stock standard pieces. The car ‘comes to life’ with the help of an iPad which turns on the headlights, DRLs, fog lights, hazard lights, brake and reversing lights. The LEGO car was built from the ground up, layer by layer. The most challenging elements of the build were the window wipers due to their fragility, and the back spoiler which needed structure to allow it to float. The impressive build celebrates Honda’s support of the upcoming show LEGO MASTERS, which will see

eight pairs of LEGO fanatics fight it out in a high intensity building competition. McNaught will judge the show alongside Australian radio and TV personality, Hamish Blake, as host. Honda Australia Director, Mr. Stephen Collins said, “Honda is a company that is all about creativity and innovation so it’s great to support a family show that mirrors these ideals so well. Through LEGO MASTERS we’ll see some of the dreams of the contestants, and also fans, come to life – we’re proud to be helping drive that.” The multi award-winning Civic Type R was the ideal choice of the Honda Australia range to build due to its challenging lines which lends themselves to one of the most rewarding driving experiences in the hot hatch segment. The LEGO Civic Type R will be making appearances across Australia over the coming months.
