The airport was delighted to once again be invited to take part in the annual Bitterne Park School Big Interview back in March. Four members of the Southampton Airport team visited the school to take part in some mock interviews to help prepare the Year 10 classes for life after school. The day was a great success and the team were incredibly impressed with how well the students did. Bring on next year!

SO18 Big Local Back in February, some members of the airport team joined forces with the SO18 Big Local community group to help with clearing the pathway that runs along the back of Frogs Copse, cutting back the overhanging greenery and removing litter, to make the path much more accessible. www.southamptonairport.com
Runway Run
Although it was a lot of hard work, the team had great fun and look forward to helping out the SO18 group again soon!
Our runway run is now fully booked! On the 25th June, 500 people will be sprinting 5k down the runway to raise money for our wonderful charity of the year, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. All money raised will go directly to the charity to help them continue the life-saving critical care that they deliver, 365 days a year.

December – Steven Penny – SJ Penny Steve was working a night shift when he noticed an elderly couple enter the terminal. The couple had travelled over from the Isle of Wight ready for an early flight the next morning but hadn’t realised that the terminal closed overnight. A couple of hours later Steve noticed the couple sat outside so endeavoured to try and check them in to a hotel, after checking numerous hotels with no luck Steve took the couple to his house so they could sit and wait there and then drove them back to the terminal the next morning for their flight. Steve really did go above and beyond!

February – Debbie Jarvey – Swissport After a passenger’s flight was cancelled due to fog, Debbie went out of her way to ensure the passenger got to her hotel safely including driving her all the way to Portsmouth and around all the hotels to find out exactly which one her husband had booked for her. Not only that, but Debbie refused to take anything in return. The passenger praised Debbie stating “Debbie is a lovely treasure and I am so very grateful for her spontaneous and generous act of kindness to a stranger”. Well done Debbie!

A History of Modern Britain by Andrew Marr
‘The logic of the drugs war only leads one way: the police get smarter, so the criminals get nastier. Things can only ever go from bad to worse, from savagery to savagery…’ Neil Woods was the first and best of his kind – an undercover cop whose brief was to infiltrate Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs, befriending the foot soldiers before taking on their gangster bosses. Good Cop, Bad War is an intense account of the true effects of the War on drugs and British undercover policing.
No Nonsense – Joey Barton
one Bu y one get price! f ha l
So, you think you know Joey Barton. Think again. No Nonsense is a game-changing autobiography which will redefine the most fascinating figure in British football. It is the raw yet redemptive story of a man shaped by rejection and the consequences of his mistakes. He has represented England, and been a pivotal player for many clubs, but his career has featured recurring controversy. The low point of being sent to prison for assault in 2008 proved to be the catalyst for the reevaluation of his life.
SAS: Who Dares Wins
Britain’s SAS (Special Air Service) has an unparalleled reputation for soldiering excellence. Their skills and techniques have been perfected in the most demanding environments imaginable, but many of these can also be used in our everyday lives. Its four authors - stars of the hit Channel 4 show SAS: Who Dares Wins - show how their finely honed understanding of how to handle extreme challenges can be applied in any environment. Their advice can transform your performance in a whole range of scenarios: from buying a house, nailing a job interview, and the experience of dealing with rejection, to maintaining a diet, or managing that pushy colleague at work.

Top tips when travelling with children • • • •
• •
The most compact form of entertainment is a device loaded with apps and games. Give them a camera…you might be surprised at the results from their knee-high view. Pack extra clothing in your hand baggage just in case of any little accidents. Get your children to keep a journal of the things they see/do as well as collecting ticket stubs and labels to stick in. Pack plenty of snacks – no one wants a ‘hangry’ child/teenager on their journey! Don’t forget to check their passports as children’s are only valid for 5 years.

France from a different view
When you think about holidaying in the South of France, one’s immediate thought is that of sun-drenched beaches of chic resorts. Mention the Pyrenees and you think of snowy escapes to the slopes. But visiting the regions of Rodez, Avignon and the Midi-Pyrenees in the summer months offers some truly stunning sights, diverse activities and a wealth of culture and history.
Rodez The South of France has always been a favoured destination for a holiday home and with very good reason. With a flight time to Rodez of 1hour 30mins from Southampton Airport, you can be relaxing in your maison secondaire within a couple of hours. However, some might not have considered Rodez…until now! Its rural location could have put off many potential holiday home buyers but in 2014 new motorways and dual carriageways were built making it much more accessible. It’s partly thanks to the previous isolation that the heart of Rodez is relatively unspoilt. Packed full of history and tradition, enclosed by old Roman and medieval city walls, a maze of narrow streets, shaded alleyways and quaint squares…all waiting to be explored.

With daily flights from Southampton, heading to Glasgow for business couldn’t be easier. With a flight time of just 1 hour 30 mins, a day trip or short stay makes it perfectly accessible for business trips. The problem with any business trip is the lack of time to experience the destination itself, but with flights every day returning for the weekend, it is a must to appreciate this wonderful city in full! There are plenty of things to do in Glasgow from the moment you step out of the airport. For history and culture lovers the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of the most popular attractions in the city, housing one of Europe’s great art collections. The Riverside Museum is home to some of the world’s finest cars, bicycles, ship models, trams and locomotives, and its interactive exhibitions bring the tales of historic Glasgow to life.

Arts and culture find yourself in Bali There’s no denying that increased tourism has led to a lot of development in Denpasar (which means more luxury resorts to choose from) but nonetheless, the mystical temples, exotic weather, relaxed atmosphere and spicy food make for a gem of a trip. The city of flowers is a perfect blend of modern meets Balinese culture. Arts and culture are centred on Hinduism and the city is decorated with many temples, the most renowned being the Pura Agung Jagatnatha, Pura Maospahit, and Puri Pemecutan. Not only are these ancient sites of an intriguing past but they are awash with colourful celebrations and festive anniversaries. Denpasar is also the host of the annual Bali Arts Festival which is a cultural treat if you are visiting in June and July.
It’s true… The Balinese people are some of the most pleasant and cheery people you will meet.

A world in tune with nature, the City in the Sun offers breath-taking scenery, natural attractions and a fascinating introduction to both wildlife and nightlife. And if you fancy a trip, hop on board the Nairobi-Mombasa line of the Jambo Kenya Deluxe - one of the finest rail trips the world has to offer!

A city of icons Washington As well as being the home of the White House and an array of iconic memorials, Washington DC is a vibrant city with great food, art and cultural attractions. From iconic movie backgrounds and lesser known American architecture to the historic National Mall where Dr. Martin Luther King made his world-changing speech…it’s a city with plenty of history and culture. Plan your summer trip around one of the biggest events on their calendar and you could be celebrating Independence Day in the most American setting. For those shopaholics, it has an enormous shopping experience that most other cities would find difficult to match and if sport is more your thing, it has live sporting events in excess!
Why Washington? Washington DC has a huge variety of museums important for Americans and the rest of the world.

ost famous for her novels, Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen was born in Steventon and lived in the rural village near Basingstoke for more than half of her life. The local places, people and landscapes had a huge influence on her life and her novels and to honour this connection 24 ‘Bookbenches’ will be on display to visitors from June until September. Jane Austen fans from far and wide will be flocking to see the benches which have each been uniquely designed by a professional artist interpreting a different Jane Austen theme. And to make navigating the trail as easy as possible there will be a free trail guide and free to download app available for Apple and Android.
As headline sponsor of the Sitting with Jane campaign, Basingstoke-based shopping centre, Festival Place, will be hosting several of the benches, providing the perfect opportunity for those following the trail to do a spot of shopping in one of their 160 big brand stores or stop for some refreshments at one of their 20 restaurants. Hat Fair is the UK’s longest running festival of outdoor arts. Founded in 1974 by Jonathan Kay, Hat Fair inspires and is inspired by the people, heritage and public spaces within the city of Winchester. With the aim to shine a light on the city, transforming the everyday into the extraordinary. Initially conceived as a busking festival, Hat Fair takes its name from the tradition of the audience showing their appreciation by putting money in the hat at the end of the show.
