From the Grand Regent
More than Words
David E. Maszkiewicz
One of my favorite motivational books is The Winner Within: A Life Plan for Team Players by NBA Hall of Fame Coach Pat Riley. The book is about Coach Riley’s experiences with the LA Lakers in the 1980s and what he learned along the way. Coach Riley talks about how every individual can impact, and is responsible for, the success of any organization. The Winner Within is really about teamwork and life, and has, in many ways, been an inspiration in my life. In one chapter in particular, Coach Riley talks about “thunderbolts,” those events in life that strike when least expected and challenge us to move above and beyond them. One of these thunderbolts recently struck my life and my family’s life as well. On January 15, my wife, Cheryl, (also a brother and a 1982 initiate of Beta Kappa chapter) was found unresponsive; she was the victim of an unknown brain injury. Cheryl spent three weeks in a coma before slowly waking up from it. She was placed in a brain injury rehabilitation center, and after one month, she finally returned home. Cheryl has improved greatly, but still faces many months of outpatient therapy. She is expected to fully recover. Needless to say, it has been a difficult time for us, but also a time when, once again, I am reminded that the phrase “Kappa Psi is for Life” is much more than words. As difficult as this time was for Cheryl and me, once again, without asking, we found the Brotherhood was there for us. We received numerous e-mails and cards, including cards signed by entire chapters and Province assemblies. There were also phone calls of support from all across the country, and several brothers visited Cheryl, even as she lay in a coma in the hospital. I cannot fully express my thanks to all of you for what your support and prayers have meant to us. Once again, this experience reminds me how much Kappa Psi means and has meant in my life—through all the thunderbolts and setbacks, in good times and in bad. The Kappa Psi experience is something you just can’t put a price on. Brotherhood, lifelong friendships and the realization that the grip of the Order is much more than a handshake can only be realized by experiencing it. To alumni reading this, I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir. So many of you can probably share similar experiences. But to you collegians, especially those of you graduating this year, make the commitment to keep Kappa Psi in your life. As much as Kappa Psi has meant to you during your college days, it will mean so much more during the rest of your life. Don’t give it up! I promise that you too will one day find that “Kappa Psi is for Life” is much more than words. In fact, one day you may even wonder what life would be like without it. A good place for all brothers to renew or strengthen their bond with the Fraternity is to attend the 53rd GCC in Boston. One of the greatest turning points in my Kappa Psi life came when I attended the 42nd GCC in South Padre Island, Texas, in 1985. I have not missed a GCC since. It was at my first GCC that I truly understood what Kappa Psi really is. It’s so much more than our own chapter and Province, because our roots of brotherhood have no limits. Come and experience that! You will enjoy a fun-filled week with brothers from across the country. And you’ll also have the opportunity to influence the direction of our Fraternity by voting on legislation and electing the next Executive Committee officers. For one week, the Fraternity will be in your hands. Make plans now to join other brothers in Boston, August 7–11. In experiencing a GCC for the first time, you too will take the first step toward realizing that “Kappa Psi is for Life” is indeed much more than words. Fraternally, Proud to be your Brother,
David E. Maszkiewicz Grand Regent 2005–2007

The Change of Kappa Psi “The times, they are a changing.” This line from a Bob Dylan song rings as true today as it did 40 years ago when it was written. The world around us is changing. It is constantly changing and it is rapidly changing. This leaves us no choice but to change with it or be left behind. Change is never easy for most of us, as we become accustomed to the old way of doing things. Even when the old way is outmoded, we still resist change because it’s easier to do things as we’ve always done them than to endure the pain that change brings. To have successful change in an organization, you must first believe you can make a change and that change is necessary for continued growth and improvement. You must empower yourself with the belief that you can and will do bigger and better things. You must plan big enough for success to be fruitful and long lived. Success will come if you take the change or goal seriously. However, sometimes we forget what our original goal was and we have to change tactics to succeed or reach our goal. This should not be a major stumbling block. In fact, most successful business enterprises alter their plans before they reach their goals. The plans we make today may become obsolete before we reach our goals, at which time a different path for success must be chosen. The most important thing to remember if this occurs is that we can successfully change our path. And remember, the method used to accomplish a goal may change but the goal itself does not change. We must use the resources that are available to us to make big enough plans to meet the demands of a changing world. Editor Porter and old friend Dewey Garner enjoy We must reach out to people and show the Province VII meeting in Memphis. them the fraternity world is a world of good people doing good things. We must teach them how our Fraternity does its good works and deeds. But most of all, we must lead by example. We must do the right thing and do it consistently. We must work efficiently together so we can reach even more people and use our resources even more wisely. By striving for big ideas and goals, working together, and using our resources properly, we can accomplish our goals and ideas. The times are changing. Will we be left behind? I certainly hope not. The ASHP midyear meeting was held in sunny Anaheim, California, at the Anaheim Convention Center, December 3–7, 2006. As always, folks at the Kappa Psi booth were ready to greet fellow brothers as they browsed the annual expo. This year Executive Director Scott Long, Grand Counselor Becky Fahrenbruch, and Graduate Member-at-Large Lawrence Brown manned the tables and handed out specially made Kappa Psi ribbons for brothers’ name tags. The Hearts and Crafts Quilt, the newest national philanthropy project to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, was on display at the booth as well, though in a much smaller form. An informal Kappa Psi gathering was held Monday night at the ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney. Many brothers came out for an enjoyable evening of fellowship and brotherhood. Since the convention center is located close to the theme park, many Kappa Psi brothers got a chance to visit Disneyland between meetings and seminars. The ASHP midyear was a great chance to meet brothers from across the country. New bonds were formed and old ones were renewed as Kappa Psi gathered to advance the profession. The next ASHP midyear meeting will be held under the glittering lights of Las Vegas, December 2–6, 2007.

Andrew Frasco To you, my brother, whom I have not had the good fortune to meet and speak with personally during my travels, I submit for your consideration this brief sketch enumerating my past involvement in Kappa Psi. I was initiated in Province V at Xi chapter at The Ohio State University. I served in leadership positions on the chapter level as vice regent and regent, on the province level as historian and vice satrap of Province V, and on the national level as Graduate Member-at-Large 2003–2005 and as Grand Ritualist 2005–2007. I have served as the Grand Council Deputy for Theta chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond for two years, and have served as the Province VII supervisor for 2005–2007. I have chaired the Graduate Relations Committee and the Ritual Committee, and have overseen, assisted with, and participated in numerous philanthropy projects to benefit the Special Olympics, MDA, MS, and ALS. During 2007–2009, it is my wish to serve our Fraternity as Grand Counselor. In this capacity, I hope to continue to assist collegiate and graduate chapters, as well as Provinces, with updating and understanding their local ordinances. It has been an extreme honor serving you as Grand Ritualist for the past two years. I look forward to serving you and our Order in the future.
Ben Welch I was initiated into Gamma Xi chapter in 1968. As a collegian, I served as parliamentarian and vice regent. In Province III, I first served as the Province delegate to the 36th GCC in New Orleans. Following that I was satrap for six years. I was regent of the South Carolina Graduate chapter for eight years. In 1989, I moved to take a job at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Pharmacy Practice Department. In Province VII, I’ve served as satrap and GCC Province delegate. I am currently the regent of the Southwestern Graduate chapter. I believe I am the only brother to serve as satrap for two different Provinces and regent for two different Graduate chapters. Counting the Province meetings in both III

and VII, I have attended 38 consecutive Province meetings and 18 consecutive GCCs. In 1997, I started the Kappa Psi web pages. During my 10 years as web master, I set up the e-mail directory; made available online most if not all of the forms used by the Central Office; set up mailing lists for the Provinces, Executive Committee, and Grand Council Deputies; and established a general mailing list for everyone. Online registration and payment for the GCCs was set up in 1991, along with the various Graduate brother giving levels, including the annual voluntary dues. I worked with the Scholarship Committee to set up the Chapter of the Year form in an Excel spreadsheet. I have a number of ideas that I feel will greatly benefit the Fraternity, one of which is a national pledge project—having pledges update their chapter’s Graduate brother mailing list and sending a copy to the Central Office. I also believe we should establish a uniform pledge program for all chapters.
Kali Jernigan Kali Jernigan spent the last two years serving our Fraternity as collegiate member-at-large. She graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2006 and completed a public health pharmacy residency in Birmingham in 2007. She served her chapter and Province in various Spring 2007

capacities while a collegiate brother and has been active as a graduate. As a graduate she was appointed Legislative Committee chair for Province IV and serves on the Graduate Development Committee. Internationally, she serves on the Crisis Management Committee and is chair of the Collegiate Development Committee. Kali has attended many successful chapter development seminars in Province IV and aided in the chartering process at Delta Omega chapter and Tampa Graduate chapter. She has attended a Province I and Province III conclave and all Province IV conclaves. She’s also attended various national meetings, such as ASHP’s midyear clinical meeting, NCPA’s national meeting, and APhA’s annual meeting. She is prepared to hit the ground running in August and help Kappa Psi continue to move forward. Kali hopes to continue serving the Brotherhood in a Grand Officer capacity for the next two years. She looks forward to seeing everyone in Boston!

We have begun the pledging process and have six new goats in the pledging class. We look forward to welcoming them as brothers later this semester. We have many great events planned for the coming months, including our seventh annual ALS Association golf tournament. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a motor neuron disease that leaves patients in a state of paralysis but fully coherent. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the ALS Association, whose mission is “to find a cure for and improve living with ALS.” We set up a soda can pull tab collection drive for the local Ronald McDonald House. These tabs are sold for recycling and the proceeds are used by the Ronald McDonald House to provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. There is also a local hospitality house that has been lodging families of patients at the Medical College of Virginia since 1984. We volunteer our time to help prepare and serve a dinner for many of the 100 to 150 residents who stay there at any one time. —Matt Staples
Beta Kappa brothers Stephanie Premontese (left) and Kat Kingston enjoy the Kappa Psi vs. PDC football game. February, we initiated 14 brothers: Andrew Cheung, Daniel Cloutier, Theodore Connelly, J.R. Henschke, Peter Lee, Leon Mezentsev, Priyank Patel, Vinit Patel, Carlos Perez, Michael Provost, Jeffrey Skalaban, Sam Trask, Pietro Treviso, and Jensen Varghese. We are in complete support of them as noble entries into the agora and worthy of the letters Kappa Psi. Our year-long effort for leukemia is showing great numbers and inspiring many members of the student body to believe in something while fighting for a cause. We are also beginning an initiative to support the March of Dimes, as it is an organization close to our hearts. Once again, the brothers of Xi chapter had a busy couple of quarters. In spite of our hectic schedules, we found time to volunteer repeatedly with several local organizations. We helped Habitat for Humanity, and served dinner at a local food kitchen and the Unverferth House. In the fall, several brothers took part in a chilly Making Stride for Breast Cancer event. Beta Gamma chapter really shined this quarter! With the help of fellow brothers from various classes and a fabulous cabinet, many events and activities were carried out smoothly and to kick off winter quarter with a bang. Brothers let loose and put on their ice skates to attend the surprise Big Bro Revealing at Yerba Buena Ice Skating Rink. This unforgettable experience, filled with slips, chills, laughter, and fun, created new friendships and reinforced old ones. This year’s scavenger hunt was also a big hit in a crazy sort of way as pledges ran rampant with their plastic bags, disposable cameras, and group members. On the flipside, it brought unity to the group and fostered team-building, which we are confident will keep the pledges going as they cross over through Initiation and beyond. We also continued our strong tradition of philanthropy by selling Valentine’s Day grams and raising $400, and assembling gift baskets to benefit the Asian Women’s Shelter. Also in the works are projects that include a quilt square and a $100 donation to the Hearts and Crafts Project to benefit Multiple Sclerosis, the Habitat Restoration Project with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and serving dinner to the disadvantaged at Glide Memorial Church in the Tenderloin. Last but not least, we are extremely excited about hosting the Province IX meeting. With 59 brothers recently initiated, there will be strong representation from our school. Twenty-one brothers were sold to lucky ladies in an evening that included many hilarious moments. The winners of the auction received a Beta Epsilon brother for an allexpenses-paid evening of fun and dancing at one of the local bars. We raised nearly $800 from the auction alone and still have the funds from the dance to include in the total. All of the proceeds from the auction and dance will go to the American Cancer Society. We’d like to thank brothers Dr. Jef Bratberg for being the auctioneer and Adam Beer for setting up and running the event. The URI Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society will take place on April 27. Beta Epsilon has been the top fund raising group for the relay for the past two years.

Hopefully this year we can surpass the amounts we collected in previous years. Our annual Drug Fair took place on March 29. The Drug Fair is a great way for brothers and other students in the college of pharmacy to meet representatives from various aspects of the health care and pharmaceutical industries, and to possibly set up future career opportunities. Our URI College of Pharmacy apparel is still for sale. We had our most successful fund-raiser last semester by selling clothing with the new college logo on it, and are doing the same this semester. There was a large turnout of brothers from Province II, and all of the social events and meetings were lots of fun. Unfortunately, KY brothers narrowly lost to PDC in the football game. We also plan to distribute free bagels and cream cheese to students and faculty members for National School Breakfast Week. Gamma Kappa contributed to the SDSU community by organizing and funding speaker Dr. John Ridgway to talk about alcohol abuse and drug addiction. The event was held on campus January 31 with around 100 students and SDSU College of Pharmacy faculty members in attendance. Cookies and hot cocoa we provided by the other SDSU College of Pharmacy organizations. The event turned out great. A special thank you to all who were involved. Seven Gamma Kappa brothers performed cholesterol screenings during the SDSU Wellness Fair in February. Fourth-year pharmacy student and Brother Rachel Schardin ran the show and instructed younger brothers in the art of cholesterol screenings. Thanks, Rachel. You are a great teacher. Gamma Kappa charged $5 per screening. The $60 raised was donated to the American Heart Association. Brothers of Gamma Kappa formed a team for the 2007 Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon. Eleven brothers raised $2,163 for the great cause. This year the dance marathon committee set a goal of $35,000, which will help the hospital buy an incubator called the Giraffe that will help save
premature babies. The February event included crafts, dancing, board games, singing, and hanging out with the children. On the first weekend in February, 24 brothers attended a Sioux Falls Stampede hockey game. The game went great, with Sioux Falls winning 11–2 over Indianapolis. A handful of brothers also trekked to Great Bear Ski Resort in Sioux Falls for our annual Kappa Psi ski trip. Finally, after countless hours of work and planning, Brothers Robert Wright and Dale Christensen unleashed their creation on the Brookings sled hill: the “Bob” sled. A three-person couch with sleds attached to the bottom was carried to the top of the hil0l and turned loose. It was an amazing day of ups and downs! —William Hayes
Spring semester has hit and the brothers of Gamma Nu are excited for another large pledge class of pharmacy and pre-pharmacy students. Our annual rush dinner was a great success with 160 people and more than 40 alumni in attendance at the prestigious Stockton Country Club. Gamma Nu brothers are thankful for the abundance of support from alumni. At the end of February, we pinned 28 potential brothers. As always, the chapter has been volunteering in the community with such events as Black Heritage Day and the annual Crab Feed, during which 10 brothers and 10 potential brothers consumed 13 large plates of crab. —Kevin Han

a lot of diabetic kids! Funding for the carnival came from KY’s and APhA’s participation in the Oktoberfest fund-raiser at O’Neil’s Pub, where we raised more than $2,500! Gamma Rho brothers have also continued to congregate weekly at Chama River Brewing Company for food and fun. Last semester we also had a preparty/broomball night at the Outpost Ice Arena. There was a lot of falling, a ton of bruises, and one concussion. This was the second time our chapter did this, and it’s always a lot of fun and a good chance to have a little down time with fellow brothers. We opened spring semester with a KY Salsa Night and were able to cut a rug without embarrassing ourselves to any great extent. It was a fun time and a good chance for us to interact not only with other brothers, but various members of the student body. KY brothers were involved in numerous health screenings, the annual JDRF walk, flu shot clinics, and Legislative Day at the capitol building in Santa Fe. In the near future we will have a silent auction to raise money for the chapter and a bowling night at Leisure Bowl. We would also like to congratulate our 11 new brothers who were inducted in the fall: Michael Ball, Joe Cole, Chris French, Nicolas Garcia, Josh Gesiorski, Bill Henning, Dave Joeckle, Jon Nazarian, Will Robertson, Jeff Smith, and Aaron Wolff. We recently elected officers for the year. They include Greg Carter, regent; Stephen Harvey, vice regent; Matt Kirchoff, pledge master; Jeremy Deni, chaplain; Nicolas Garcia, sergeant at arms; Dustin Edwards, treasurer; Michael Ball, recording secretary; Aaron Wolff, corresponding secretary; and Joe Cole, historian. The brothers of Gamma Sigma played in the Just for Kids kickball tournament. All proceeds went to the charity of the winning team’s choice. While we didn’t win, we know the money went to a good cause. We look forward to practicing more kickball and getting ready to win next year’s tournament. For the first time, Kappa Psi brothers invited students from the college of law. The affair was a huge success and might even become an annual event! The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy holds Legislative Day each year on the lawn at the capitol building in Phoenix. KY brothers consistently attend and represent pharmacists of Arizona to give the legislators a taste of what pharmacists can do. The free screenings offered by the college of pharmacy students included cholesterol, diabetes, and hypertension screenings. A Valentine’s Day celebration was held at Sushi-Ten. About 20 brothers attended, single or coupled. The night capped with dancing at a country/Top 20 dance club. The brothers of Gamma Psi have enjoyed having the opportunity to strengthen the chapter’s brotherhood over the past few months. Recently, we initiated 10 brothers who we believe will continually strive for strong brotherhood in the coming years. They have joined us in supporting several charity foundation projects. The Race For Riley was one of our bigger events where we helped the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation raise money for children afflicted with a mitochondrial disease. In addition, our chapter participated in our biannual road cleanup, the Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure,

Socially, Gamma Psi continued its legacy of brotherhood fellowship. We hung out at local hot spots, attended several professional sporting events, went on an entertaining ski trip to the Smokey Mountains, and even went on a cruise to Mexico. Through all of this, everlasting bonds were formed between brothers that will allow us to achieve more as a Fraternity. We believe our hard work and dedication could not be possible without the unity throughout our chapter, which a major emphasis in our Chapter Development Program. In the midst of spring semester, the brothers of Delta Delta chapter could not be busier! The chapter’s 36 newly inducted brothers are already hard at work contributing to the ongoing, active spirit of the Fraternity. Stacie Dacus and Meagan Jordan, is hard at work preparing for spring formal, while Brothers Cheryl Holt, Ken Frost, and Clay Boyd are diligently putting together a Delta Delta alumni newsletter. Other committees work to assist the chapter and plan future events and help chapter proceedings and meetings run smoothly. Continuing in the tradition of demonstrating active leadership within the pharmacy school, the brothers of Delta Delta chapter proudly applaud the newly inducted members of Phi Lambda Sigma National Pharmacy Leadership Society at the University of Houston. This includes Brothers Charisse Birdwell, Lori Markel, Thomas Key, Irene Kwong, and Tri Nguyen. The Kid’s Grand Prix event, hosted by the Ronald McDonald House, went smoothly as brothers helped entertain children and assist on the racetrack. The chapter eagerly anticipates the reopening of the homeless clinic in downtown Houston, which has temporarily been closed due to a location change. Brother Kyana Stewart has arranged a spring schedule for future assistance with Houston’s McDade Elementary and its 21st century after school program. Congratulations! Delta Zeta is busy planning all sorts of activities for members to enjoy. We are learning about each others’ cooking abilities, or lack thereof, as we volunteer to make and serve dinner at the Ronald McDonald House. We’re teaching new members about hypertension screenings so they will be able to participate in screenings at various pharmacies. Our annual bowl-athon is always a big hit, and all of the proceeds are donated to the
Ronald McDonald House. It’s amazing how many pharmacy students can possess excellent bowling skills! The bowling event is open to all students at the college. Students form teams that compete against each other for some impressive prizes! Many of our events require only a few of our members to volunteer at a time, which is great, given our busy schedules, but we are trying a chapter-wide philanthropy event this semester to help Habitat for Humanity. We are all very excited to assist families in this way and excited to bond and grow as a chapter through this experience. We are electing officers a little earlier this year to secure enough time to train new officers and make the transition smooth. Many of our officers are third-year students who have been dedicated to Kappa Psi during the last three years. Their leadership will be missed as they head out on rotations. We hope by having the new officers “shadow” the existing officers for a couple months they can be trained on all their newly acquired duties. Our social chair has been busy arranging activities for our chapter as well. We celebrated, or mourned over, the Super Bowl together, depending on what team you were cheering for. Upcoming activities include a night at the casino and once the weather cooperates, a chapter barbecue. Conclave will be held at the University of Iowa during fall semester, with anticipated dates being October 19–20 at the Marriott Hotel in Coralville. Mark your calendar now for a great weekend in Iowa City! Our conclave committee is busy planning and hopes many KY brothers can make the trek to Iowa! —Ann Schwemm

Did you know that Delta Pi chapter is in three different cities? Texas Tech University has its school of pharmacy in Amarillo. Students can spend all four of their pharmacy school years there, or they can spend their third- and fourth-year rotations on the satellite campuses in Lubbock and Dallas. Soon to open in the fall of 2007 is our new satellite campus in Abilene, where some of the class of 2011 will start and spend all four of their pharmacy school years. There will still be a group that starts in Amarillo and has the option of spending P3 and P4 years in Lubbock or Dallas. Delta Pi brothers living on satellite campuses are experimenting with Skype to communicate with brothers on the “mother ship” campus in Amarillo. In past years we’ve used HealthNet, and last fall we tried conference phone calls. We have our fingers crossed, hoping that Skype will work in the long run, even though the system still has a few bugs. Since we’re still a relatively new chapter, we don’t have an official newsletter as of yet. But we managed to e-mail some news to some of our alumni in January, and we also received replies from a few of them. Those who replied shared milestones in their lives, career paths since graduating, willingness to help with Province VII 2008, and provided updated address information. Congratulations to our faculty advisor, Dr. Eric MacLaughlin, on the birth of a new baby; Jamie Guyear (2006 graduate) on the birth of a daughter; Peter Palizo on the birth of a son; and Julian Vargas on the birth of a son. Delta Pi brothers who are expecting include Joyce Fender and Mark King. Also, Lisa Plasencia and Jeff Hildebrand (both 2004 graduates) were married November 11, 2006. Miriam Wolters-Horton (2006 graduate) was married during the summer of 2006. In December 2006, Delta Tau chapter, headed by vice regent Amy Jenkins, conducted a philanthropic project to adopt an abused family for the Safenest Family Shelter in Las Vegas. Brothers raised a more than $700 for the adopted family, and gave the family a carload toys for the children, baby products, and supplies. There were also three pack’n’play packages filled with donated clothes for all ages of children and the mother. Needless to say, the adopted family had a very nice Christmas. Brother Amy Jenkins went beyond the call to help this family have one of the

Finally, karaoke, held in February, showcased all the talented singing voices of Delta Tau brothers, none of which are candidates for Star Search. Three brothers will attend the Province IX meeting in San Francisco: Amy Jenkins, vice regent; Jessica Garcia; and Tawny Lizarraga. At the end of fall quarter, we pinned our Epsilon pledge class and capped off the evening with a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed party for our pledges. The student lounge was transformed into a pirate paradise with cannons and cannonballs, a desert island with a palm tree and parrot, treasure chests filled with precious booty, skeletons, and a Jolly Roger flying overhead. There was also an oversized chocolate fountain and dipping foods. As usual, winter quarter was dominated by pledge events. Under the direction of chaplain Elizabeth Sarles, our pledge class spent seven weeks learning about the Brotherhood of Kappa Psi. Pledges learned about Kappa Psi/Delta Phi via history lessons and quizzes from historian Brandon Mutrux, as well as by decoding pledge memos in Greek created by Brother Robert Mancini. Other pledge activities included having lunch with their big brother and great-big brother,

On February 25, the pledges completed their philanthropy project, which was raising money for the Cardiovascular Disease Foundation, by participating in a 5K walk along the beach in Carlsbad. Brothers Elizabeth Sarles, Robert Mancini, and Brandon Mutrux also participated in what was a very
scenic stroll along the coast. One of the highlights of the pledge period was the pledgeplanned and hosted party for active brothers. The so-called Plan V party was thrown on February 15 and marketed as a cure for Valentine’s Day withdrawal. The pledges supplied amazing decorations in the form of streamers, carnations, candles, and centerpieces. Finger foods and virgin drinks were served, and a great variety of music was played, including guitar solos

by Pledge Robert Lo. In addition, the pledge class serenaded us with a version of I Want it That Way before presenting their big brothers with a red carnation. We also played a game where we had to determine via yes and no questions what celebrity name we had posted on our back and then find our matching spouse. The evening went off without a hitch and was certainly a hit with the brothers. As one of their final activities as pledges, our Epsilon class completed the traditional Delta Phi scavenger hunt around San Diego. Teams of four pledges deciphered clues that directed them to spots important to our local history. Active brothers were stationed at each location, and pledges needed to answer a question about Kappa Psi to obtain the clue to the next location. As their final test, pledges took an exam testing their knowledge of Kappa Psi/Delta Phi history and symbolism. In addition to their required pledge-only activities, pledges and brothers got together on January 16 for our first-ever Speed Pledging event. At this activity pledges rotated to various stations manned by two brothers. At each station there was a theme to help break the “ice” and allow brothers and pledges to get to know one another better. Themes ranged from the typical “favorite foods” and “musical tastes” to more obscure word-association and pretend-Rorschach test stations. All in all, it was a great way for brothers and pledges to get to know one other. On the philanthropic front, active brothers participated in a beach cleanup project at South Carlsbad State Beach. Brothers had time to get on the beach, make a difference in the community, and spend time with each other outside the classroom. Socially, Delta Phi held an Iron Chef contest where five teams had 90 minutes to make a dish with the secret ingredient: key limes. Dishes included pasta, salads, chicken, and salmon, along with various drinks and deserts that featured key limes. The lucky judges were alumni Rani Dibbini, Linda Ngo, and April Haines, and AJ Ryan, a fourth-year brother. Every Christmas season, brothers sponsor an indigent family by purchasing gifts listed on the family’s wish list. The list may include, but is not limited to, toys, computer games, television sets, and microwave ovens. Funds to purchase such items are raised from candy sales, soda pop sales, and through monetary donations from brothers. Such sales occur in the workplace and at Fraternity functions. Brothers also spend time wrapping and personally delivering the gifts to the deserving families. Other activities brothers involve themselves in include Meals on Wheels and reading to elementaryaged school children. A few graduate brothers are certified CPR instructors. Each school year, they provide CPR to undergraduate students as a qualification for their clinical rotations and internships. This spring, brothers hope to participate in a local Health-o-Rama by performing drug counseling. The most recent Fraternity function was a potluck at the Mu Omicron Pi house on Super Bowl Sunday. Several brothers got together that evening to root for their favorite team, and it wasn’t the Lions. —Robert Franczak
Illinois Graduate Our reinstatement meeting in November had us in a quandary as
to which direction to take as a chapter. We got off to a slow start, but things are falling into place. A welcoming reception was held in January, which was well attended by Kappa Psi alumni, their family members, and friends. January marked the start of the “Post-Graduation Options” speaker series for Chi chapter. Myra Campara started the series talking about residencies. February’s speakers, Manish Puri and Ketul Patel, enlightened students on the pharmaceutical industry. Alumni Networking Hour for Chi chapter was held on February 16. Six Kappa Psi alumni provided insight on different areas of pharmacy, including community practice, industry, and residency. It was a success based on the positive feedback we received. Thanks to Manish Puri for organizing a wonderful networking opportunity! Kudos to Chi chapter for all your support and encouragement. Province IX It is an exciting time to be part of Province IX. Our spring assembly was hosted by Beta Gamma chapter March 2–3 in San Francisco. The weekend started off with pizza and a happy hour at Yancy’s Saloon. Next, brothers were off to the Beta Gamma house to continue reuniting with old friends and meeting new brothers. Much work was to be done during the meeting, so no time was wasted. Attendance was at an alltime high with 144 brothers present and all chapters attending. Our philanthropic project, Know Your Antibiotics, was introduced, and brothers from across the Province will distribute flyers to their local pharmacies to educate patients on antibiotics. Our scholarship fund is growing. We hope to have our first scholarship given by the next spring assembly. The Province IX awards have been updated, and new awards have been created so higher standards are set for our chap-
ters. The Collegiate Development Committee is putting together a reception for the upcoming AphA meeting in Atlanta. During the second half of the meeting, elections for the Executive Committee were held. We are proud to introduce our new Executive Committee members: satrap, Stephanie Villanueva (Beta Gamma); vice satrap, Robert Mancini (Delta Phi); secretary/ treasurer, Carly Paoli (Beta Gamma); chaplain, Eugene Lee (Gamma Nu); and historian, Liz Sarles (Delta Phi). The brothers of Province IX congratulate the new leaders and look forward to working with them in the next year. The awards banquet was held at the Argonaut Hotel near Fisherman’s Wharf. A short movie was presented by immediate past satrap Kristl Tom to recap the weekend’s events. A special plaque was given to our supervisor, Cameron “Radar” VanDyke, for all the hard work and dedication he’s provided to Province IX. Recognition pins were presented to Stephanie Villanueva and Ryan Martelino for their exceptional planning for the weekend. The Traveler’s Award was presented to Gamma Nu for having 16 brothers in attendance. The Fellowhood and Brother-ship Award was given to Gamma Rho for increasing the number of brothers in attendance by six from the last meeting. And the Lapiz Taquitos Award was given to Beta Gamma for the most creative chapter report. The festivities ended later that night at Suede, a nightclub in the Marina neighborhood of San Francisco. By the end of the weekend, stronger bonds were made between brothers and a stronger Province IX emerged. With a successful spring assembly behind us, we are excited for what is to come. Many brothers plan to attend GCC in Boston, and Brothers Eric Gupta and Sanaz Farhadian are running for Grand Ritualist and Collegiate Member-AtLarge, respectively. Here to Work for You During the past two years I’ve reached many milestones in my life. I graduated from pharmacy school, completed a residency and, most importantly to all of you, was allowed to be the voice of collegiate brothers in Kappa Psi. During this term I made great effort to let the voice of collegians be heard and make a positive impact on this great Fraternity. I faced many challenges along the way, ranging from transitioning from collegian to graduate, to representing the voice of brothers in the face of adversity. The transition from collegian to graduate is one that marks many changes in life. Many people move to a new location and begin a new life. Many begin families, others continue their training, and still others stay where they are. With all the chaos that comes with graduating, staying involved with Kappa Psi is exceptionally challenging. Over the past year I discovered there are many methods to improve the retention of involved brothers. One of the most important areas is within the Province. The role of the Province is often uncertain, but this is one area that can help ease the transition for collegiate brothers. After all, a great Province fosters great chapters and great brothers from those chapters. Maintaining involvement may be a daunting task, but it is not impossible! Representing the voice of brothers in the face of adversity has been a challenge I was
Kali Jernigan
faced with during this term. I’ve always been told that doing what’s right may not always be easy, and the easy thing may not always be right. I know most brothers have been in a situation, whether at chapter, school, work, or home, where they knew what needed to be done and knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I encourage every brother to go with the decision you know is right, no matter how hard it may seem. The important thing is that you can hold your head high when someone holds you accountable for your actions. Through my term I learned that leadership embodies many qualities—from knowing when to ask for help to taking a stand for what is right. Some of these I saw in the Executive Committee (myself included) and others need to be worked on. Moving forward requires an increase in dialogue and the inclusion of YOUR input. This great Fraternity has always needed strong leadership. Always remember, the Executive Committee is here to work for you!
