Driving Change Brothers of Kappa Psi, I hope this finds your chapters and Provinces doing well. And I hope you are continuing to make improvements and other positive changes in your chapter and Province. Everyone knows that change is inevitable. But the key is not only to make sure that change is for the better, but to make sure you are driving that change rather than having change thrust upon you. You will be far more successful if you take the time to identify needed areas of improvement and then create a plan to address those areas. This reflective process should be a part of the culture of your chapters, and it all starts with the thought: “Continuing to improve our chapter so we are better than we were last year is important to us, and the best way for us to improve our chapter is to set goals and take steps every day to reach them.” If your chapter lives by this philosophy, then you can’t help but be your own “agents of change” and be far more successful than you ever thought. And if the chapter starts getting down on itself or Lawrence “LB” Brown
starts to procrastinate, all you need is one brother to say, “Hey, we all agreed that improving our chapter and reaching these goals were important to us, so we need to get some work done.” So where can you start? All you need to do is look at the last chapter progress report form you submitted to the Central Office. If there are gaps in your report, then start taking steps to fill those gaps. If you didn’t even fill out a progress report, then your first goal should be to make sure to fill one out for next year. But set a goal for the number of points you want to have in the end. Maybe the number is just 10 percent more than last year, or maybe it is 200 percent more than last year. Of the two, I would go for the 200 percent. Even if you don’t make that goal, you will still end up far above 10 percent. And because I want everyone to have a chance at winning Chapter of the Year, I will let you in on a little secret. If you take the chapter progress report form and plan your year out in advance so that you can get as many points as possible, I guarantee you will have a much stronger chapter, and will have a better chance of winning Chapter of the Year than you did last year. If your goals are important to you, doesn’t it make sense to work every day to reach them? Remember that fear, procrastination, self-doubt, and the words “We can’t” or “There is no way we can” are your enemy. Be fearless. Be positive. And get started now … because it is important.
Kappa Psi for Life … Fraternally Yours,
Lawrence “LB” Brown Grand Regent 2007–2009

On the Cover Spring in all its rush of colors!
Renewing those old friendships at the spring meeting of Province VII are (L–R): Ben Welch, Paul Knecht, Johnny Porter, Charles Carden, and Dewey Garner.
Spring Each year I look forward to the arrival of spring. The flowers, moderate temperatures, rainstorms, thunder, and the smell of freshness and newness in the air all add up to make spring well worth anticipating. With each coming spring, I realize that another cycle of life has ended and another cycle is ready to begin. Spring is the time for resolutions—not the cold dark days of January, but the fresh promising days of spring. You are able to reflect on how your life has evolved during the last year. Spring is the time you will have the opportunity to work to correct any shortcomings or missed goals or to continue on the path you have chosen. Spring gives us the opportunity to change. Spring can bring each of us a new attitude, new plan, renewed energy, more enthusiasm, and even a fresh outlook. Is there any reason not to like spring? I bet some of you are even more excited than most. Graduation is just around the corner. A new cycle of life will begin for you that is really exciting. Spring will mark the jumping off point for this new and exciting time of your life—just another reason to look forward to spring. Enjoy the spring … it really is a great time of the year. Fraternally,
Johnny W. Porter

2007 ASHP Las Vegas, Amy Everitt, Lawrence Brown, Marvin Smith, and Amy Montes enjoy the ASHP reception.
By Grand Historian Kali Jernigan
The brothers of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Inc. made their way to Las Vegas, Nevada, December 2–6 for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting. The brothers came to the convention for various reasons, including fun, learning, recruiting, and applying for residencies. Many stopped by the Kappa Psi booth to see old friends and make some new, and we were visited by brothers from around the world. The Kappa Psi reception was saved at the last minute by Grand Regent, Brother Lawrence Brown. The Fraternity was not going to have a reception due to budgetary constraints, but Brother Grand Regent saw how important the reception was to the fellowship we all hold so dear. Brother Grand Regent sent a call out to brothers for help and asked seven brothers to join him in donating $500 to fund the reception. True to Kappa Psi form, brothers responded and the money was raised in less than 48 hours. There were more than seven brothers willing to help, which really showed what it means to be Kappa Psi. We should all be proud to be a part of the fantastic brotherhood that fosters such amazing willingness to help. A special thanks goes to Brothers Johnny Porter, John Grossomanides, Norm Campbell, Eric Gupta, Fletcher Nehring, Lawrence Brown, Ed Roche, and Kali Jernigan for their generous contribution. The reception was held Monday night at the Flamingo’s Scenic Ballroom and was a huge success with over 300 brothers in attendance. While it wasn’t exactly scenic with no windows in sight, the best part of the reception was the ability to socialize with our brothers. Keep a lookout for Kappa Psi booths and receptions at future ASHP and APhA meetings! Hope to see you all there.

After welcoming our 33 new brothers last semester, we are thrilled to have another 10 pledges for spring semester! We welcomed our new pledges with an exciting night of pizza and bowling. We have been having a great time with the social and service events this past winter. Just before we left for winter break, the brothers braved the Minnesota weather to enjoy a horse-drawn hayride. We also had a fun-filled evening at our dinner meeting. We had a delicious dinner at a steak house and enjoyed listening to the stories of our speaker for the evening, Bob Volk, a brother who was initiated into Epsilon back in 1956. The chapter also celebrated the holidays with a “Secret Santa” gift exchange, and we all put down our books before final exams for a holiday party. We also helped several children celebrate the holiday season by donating gifts to the Ronald McDonald

During our winter break, several brothers got together to walk and raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The event is held at the Mall of America before stores open, which allowed the brothers to get some exercise and raise money for a great cause while avoiding the wintry weather outside. Once classes resumed, but before they got too stressful, sever-
al brothers got together to show off their skills on the ski slopes for a skiing/snowboarding/tubing extravaganza. Early in the semester, we participated in a Kidney Early Evaluation Program screening where brothers helped patients register for the event and took height, weight, and blood pressure measurements. We continue to serve the Phillips Neighborhood every Monday night at the Phillips

Neighborhood Clinic, and we are continuously visiting area high schools to give STI presentations. We’re looking forward to several more social events including a night out at the comedy club and also a night of theater when we go see Jane Eyre later this semester. We are also hoping to continue our domination on the court in intramural volleyball, and we have assembled an intramural bowling team that plans on dominating the lanes. Epsilon brothers are also planning to participate in the Malaria Swim for the second year. planned for this upcoming spring semester. We started the year off with various rush events and have since begun the pledging process. This will be one of our largest pledge classes ever with 12 new members in the pledge class. We look forward to welcoming them as brothers into the Kappa Psi family later this semester. The Theta chapter’s spring semester will be headlined by our eighth annual ALS Association golf tournament. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a motor neuron disease that leaves patients in a state of paralysis but fully coherent to the world around them. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the ALS Association whose mission is “to find a cure for and improve living with ALS.” We are hosting this event along with the school’s alumni association and are excited about the buzz this event is gathering. We also had a large contingency head up to the Province III spring meeting in Washington, D.C. This event was held at Howard University and was hosted by the Delta Kappa chapter whom we would like to thank for this great weekend. The brothers of Kappa Psi Theta chapter are excited about this upcoming year, and we look forward to all the events we have planned for this semester. Our ranks will be growing with the addition of a new pledge class. With them, we will strive to do all we can— not only for the profession of pharmacy, but also for the community at large. —Matt Staples

As for those alumni in-town, they have allowed our brothers to do yard work and various other jobs, which have created a two-pronged benefit. One benefit is a rapport that has developed between the alumni and current brothers. The other benefit is that it generated funds for our chapter. The brothers look forward to taking first place in that competition. Mu chapter will also be hosting the Province I meeting in March. —Kunal Patel

Nu chapter is full of life this semester, with numerous social and community service projects on the agenda. Right from the start, we decided that we wanted to reach out to the community, where we plan to volunteer a few weekends to run a friendly game of Bingo at the Mansfield Nursing Home and Rehab Center. We had our first combined Spring Rush event with the UConn chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma and plan to pledge three new members in midFebruary. We hope everyone enjoys and takes in all of the traditions associated with Kappa Psi and especially Nu chapter. Plans are in the works for numerous social events with Lambda Kappa Sigma in the coming weeks, including our annual Spring Social event. Brother Andrew Bzowyckyj is spearheading the introduction of Pharmacy Greek Week— a face-off in athletics, community service and philanthropy between the four pharmacy fraternal organizations at UConn. Also, be on the lookout: on the Kappa Psi website, in the near future, we will be selling the remainder of our Kappa Psi pint glasses, as seen at the 53rd GCC. —Will Anctil
Rho is excited about a great upcoming semester for our Kappa Psi brothers. In early February, several crazy brothers participated in Polar Bear Club. This year it was minus 20 degrees outside when brothers jumped into a frozen lake. Twenty-six brothers attended Province VII in Dallas where we made lots of new friends and became motivated to improve the chapter. This change started at our most recent meeting when we voted on bylaw changes and discussed the use of ritual. Currently, we are busy planning a formal for the pharmacy school in conjunction with a golf tournament. The Thomas Mikkelson Memorial Golf Tournament will take place in April; money raised will benefit HealthCare Access, a non-profit clinic that provides free medical care to the uninsured in Lawrence, Kansas. The Psi chapter finished 2007 with a month full of events before tackling finals. The first weekend of
December, Psi sponsored a water station at the Memphis St. Jude Marathon. This event is an annual one for the Psi chapter and one that we always have a good time at despite the freezing temperatures. This year we shared duties with the other pharmaceutical fraternity and had a record turnout to support the runners. That weekend was a busy one because that same night, we held our second annual Tacky Christmas Sweater Party. This event is quickly becoming a favorite among the brothers because we love getting into the Christmas spirit by dressing up in our most festive Christmas garb. This year the attire consisted of not only sweaters but costumes with a full manger scene and a gingerbread man! The New Year started out all business with the initiation of the pledge class which included 94 new brothers! With initiation complete, Jersey Night quickly followed. Psi brothers had a blast listening to the stories that surfaced on how the new brothers got their nicknames. In February, Psi attended Province VII conclave and was able to take 24 brothers all the way to Dallas, Texas. We had a great time, but I cannot speak for all since one of our brothers became sick with food poisoning as soon as we arrived and was stuck in the hotel room all weekend. We sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Sausalito, and around Alcatraz. Beta Gamma volunteered at Glide Memorial, which is a church that caters to the underserved. They provide shelter, warm meals, and counseling for those who need it. On January 19, we joined Habitat for Humanity to build affordable homes for people who have housing problems due to high costs, crowding, and homelessness. As the cold weather is beginning to subside and spring is upon us, Beta Epsilon brothers have much to be excited about. On February 25, we hosted our third annual Kappa Psi Date Auction. We had more than 25 brothers who stepped on stage and were auctioned off. The proceeds from this event went to the American Cancer Society. In previous years, we have raised over $700. This year we raised almost $1,500, which is a huge increase from previous auctions. The winning bidders will accompany their dates to a Beta Epsilon hosted event, and the proceeds will also go to the American Cancer Society. Brother Adam Beer did a superb job of coordinating this event. After our initiation this past winter, we have increased the size of our chapter to 95 brothers. Our roster has never been bigger. In sports, we reclaimed the indoor soccer championship once again. We had an undefeated season with the participation of 15 brothers. Our basketball season is also off to a good start. At this time, we are 4–0 and hope to continue to excel for the rest of the season. On March 27, we are having our annual Drug Fair in which various companies visit the University in an attempt to make connections with students. This Kappa Psi run event will include over 10 representatives from many different areas of pharmacy. Coming up in April, we have the annual Relay for Life at the University of Rhode Island. We have set our goal to make more than $3,500 during the upcoming event in the spring. It is a rewarding and fun, bonding experience for all who participate and donate. In the last few weeks, we have pulled out our chapter bylaws and made some edits and amendments. These changes include chapter dues, brotherly conduct, and our judicial system. It is now an updated, more complete set of laws to abide by. Finally, we have many social events planned for the near future with various sororities. The spring semester for Beta Lambda is unique this year. Based on the success of last semester, eight new pledges is a reasonablysized class for us, so the brothers voted to pledge again this spring. All five pledges have shown real interest in both pharmacy and philanthropy. So far, they have spent meetings learning about Kappa Psi’s history and traditions. They have also participated in our nursing home philanthropy events and taken part in meet-and-greet activities with actives. Socially, the brothers are focusing on interactions with other college of pharmacy organizations, particularly the other fraternal organizations. The brothers participated in a bowl-a-thon, hosted by Alpha Zeta Omega, and a cocktail party with the ladies of Lambda Kappa Sigma. Additionally, the annual alumni event every spring (stag) allows the brothers to network with past members of Beta Lambda. Philanthropy has always been one of Beta Lambda’s focuses. This spring the chapter sought to outdo itself. The brothers have started volunteering regularly at a local nursing home. On a couple of Saturdays each month, brothers and current pledges go to the residency and visit with the seniors who live there. They spend time with them during meals and call out Bingo numbers. Additionally, the brothers are collecting pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. The fundraiser involved the entire UT College of Pharmacy and annually raises thousands of pop tabs. Child Saving Institute is a non-profit agency that aims to prevent child abuse and neglect through programs such as foster care, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and counseling. Later in the month of March, we will also be participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, which will be held at Creighton. Our second roadside cleanup of the year will also be scheduled for sometime in April when the weather in Omaha gets a little warmer. We also had a great turnout for a social held at a local ice rink in January. There are also many people in our chapter planning on attending Province VIII conclave, which will be held by our brothers at Gamma Kappa. Beta Nu will be rounding out the school year by holding our spring banquet in April where we will be inducting our new officers who will be announced in the summer issue of THE MASK. —Ann Foede

Beta Xi
University of North Carolina Founded 5/1/1915 208 Finley Golf Course Road Chapel Hill, NC 27514
Beta Xi rushed right into a jampacked spring semester here at UNC. As soon as we were back to school, our rush events began. This semester we held info sessions and a pizza lunch at the School of Pharmacy to show students what Kappa Psi is all about. We also spent a fun evening at Charlie Goodnight’s Comedy Club, went to a Carolina Hurricane’s hockey game, and hosted our annual Blizzard Party which allowed brothers time to socialize with the rushees. Our last rush event before formal rush was a Community Service and Bingo Night. We assembled the vials for our Vial of Life project and then enjoyed a night of Bingo and prizes. As the rush came to a close, we gained five pledges—all with a genuine desire to learn about Kappa Psi. In the area of community service, we have been more than hard at work. Adopt-a-Highway and making dinners at the Ronald McDonald House continue to be two of our philanthropy events. Now that our vials have been completed during rush, we will be handing them out to the public. A Kappa Psi alumnus from a local CVS has given us permission to hand them out at his store, and we hope the vials will serve as a way to better the health care in our community. Our tobacco cessation program is still in effect as well. We continue to set up tables on campus to counsel and educate the students of UNC about the importance of tobacco cessation. We are also planning a big event to help students visualize the health consequences of smoking in support of Kick Butts Day on April 2. In addition, we have set up a Kappa Psi Relay for Life team, and our team goal is to raise $1,000 to go towards cancer research. One of our biggest community service projects this semester will be our first annual Food Drive competition we are organizing in the UNC School of Pharmacy. We will be hosting a competition between the first-year pharmacy students, second-year pharmacy students, third-year students, and the graduate student organization. Harris Teeter has

We hope to collect a lot of money and cans for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Fundraising this semester has kept the brothers of Beta Xi busy as well. We wrapped books at Barnes and Noble around Christmastime. All of the donations we received went to support our Relay for Life team. This semester we participated in four “Dean Dome cleanups where we put in a lot of hard work to raise money for our chapter. Dean Dome cleanups consist of picking up trash and recyclable materials throughout the UNC basketball arena as well as sweeping up the rows. In March we are hosting a “Shake & Bake sale where we will be selling shorts that say “Shake Well on the back and homemade goodies in the pharmacy school. We also participated in a few other social events this semester. We hosted a Mardi Gras Mixer with the professional pre-dental fraternity Delta Delta Sigma in February. In addition, we participated in the All Male Miss Pharmacy competition at the School of Pharmacy. One of our brothers dressed up as a girl and was Miss Kappa Psi in a “beauty pageant where proceeds from ticket sales went to Senior Pharm Assist. This is an organization that helps the elderly pay for medications and counseling when they cannot afford it. It was a hilarious night to say the least! In addition, many of our brothers in the pharmacy school
attended the Pharmacy School Semi-Formal where students and faculty gathered for a night away from studying and teaching. Lastly, Beta Xi has been playing in an intramural coed basketball league where our team made it through to the third round of the playoffs before our season came to a close. We are now preparing for softball season. The Beta Xi chapter is looking forward to attending Province III at Howard University as 21 of our brothers will be going up to D.C. to support our Beta Xi brothers in their last meeting as Satrap and Historian of Province III. It should be a very fun weekend and we hope to get a lot accomplished with the brothers of the other Province III chapters. We are also looking for-
ward to having Family Day at our house where we will welcome our families to Kappa Psi and show them all we have accomplished this year. In April we will have our annual Formal, which this year will be held in Myrtle Beach. It will be a very enjoyable weekend of dancing, relaxing, and presenting awards to very deserving brothers. We will be closing out the semester with our 28th Annual Tunnel Party. Brothers are hard at work building an intricate tunnel from big cardboard boxes that will go throughout the entire living room of our house. In addition to crawling through the tunnel, there will be a live band and DJ. This night always serves as a great time for brothers, faculty, and friends. It is looking like our spring semester will remain busy right up to the very end! —Nicole Nicolsen

Many sleepless nights were spent by our team of officers leading up to Province, ironing out all of the details to ensure everything ran smoothly. Congratulations to Scott Mcleod and Stacy Crow from our chapter, elected satrap and historian, respectively, for our Province. Outside of Province meetings, participating brothers went bowling at Zeppos and had a few nights out on the town, kindling that Pullman spirit for all visiting brothers to discover and enjoy. The snow conditions were wet and somewhat windy, but that did not stop our brothers from enjoying themselves as they traversed down the mountain. Everyone was comfortably rested in their warm cabins after an exhausting day of snow activities. After Mt. Attendees from Beta Omicron included Province X officers Bao-Linh Nguyen (GCC delegate), Rachael Forster (chaplain), Diana Spencer (secretary/treasurer), as well as Brothers Paul Kuo, Francine Lai, Nick Au, Skyler York and Luis Ramos. We celebrated our arrival on Friday night with brothers from other chapters at Pete’s Bar and Grill, in which everyone was able to enjoy a night of Wileys and dance move demonstrations. Business meetings were held the next morning followed by a social gathering at a local bowling alley. Activities later that day included an evening seminar on the zero-order kinetics of EtOH and a walking tour of Pullman at night. We have also been working with our local Ronald McDonald House. The chapter has cooked and served lunch for the families and patients who are currently staying there. We are still collecting tabs from soda cans for them as well, and our containers are overflowing! We are also working on a team to participate in Relay for Life, and our goal is to raise more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society. Gamma Rho
University of New Mexico Founded 2/16/1948 College of Pharmacy 2502 Marble NE Albuquerque, NM 87131
Gamma Rho celebrated 60 years of brotherhood at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy. We honored our anniversary with a social gathering that provided food, fun and dancing. The majority of
our brothers were in attendance for this event, which even included a Kappa Psi birthday cake. Right before the holiday season, we held a successful silent auction that raised more than $1,000 for our chapter. We auctioned off salon appointments, ski lift tickets, a day of “slave labor” from Gamma Rho brothers, an iPod, and gift certificates to many popular local restaurants. For the spring semester, we sponsored a Valentine’s Day Gram fundraiser where brothers played Cupid for fellow students and faculty at the College of Pharmacy.
Brothers participated in several health screenings this semester including the KOB Health Fair and Fiesta de Flu. We were able to screen patients for diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and osteoporosis, and offer flu shots to those who were interested. The KOB Health Fair is one of Albuquerque’s annual health awareness weekends, and we were able to screen and educate thousands of people. In the coming months, Gamma Rho is planning a ski/snowboarding weekend getaway to enjoy each other’s company on the slopes without the stresses of school. We are also planning to do another philanthropy event at the Battered Women’s Shelter, with whom we have worked in the past. As always, we will continue to promote the ideals of Kappa Psi and celebrate our Brotherhood throughout the spring semester! —Alexandra Grubbs

The Gamma Chi chapter continues its academic, community, and social activities as we approach the stretch run of the ’07–’08 school year. Ferris State’s Interfraternity Council recently recognized 12 of the Kappa Psi brothers for their outstanding GPAs for the fall 2007 semester. Congratulations to Brothers Erin DeDoes and Josh Halperin on their 4.0 GPAs, as well as to all of the Gamma Chi brothers who work hard to make Kappa Psi the academic leaders of IFC! Gamma Chi has once again opened up the chapter house to Big Brothers Big Sisters in Big Rapids to spread holiday cheer. We will soon be following up last semester’s Halloween Haunted House with an Easter celebration. Also, Brother Michelle Ruiter collaborated with Ferris State pharmacy students on another of our annual service events, volunteering for Special Olympics in Lansing. Finally, Brothers Erin DeDoes and Katie Georges coordinated a very successful first annual Christmas party for the families of WISE, a local women’s shelter. Donated presents for the children, gift baskets for the mothers, and a special visit from Santa and his helper (Brothers Josh Ghiringhelli and Lindsey Berlinghoff, respectively) made for a very warm December night. The Gamma Chi chapter has enjoyed working with all of these kids, who

The bonds of the Gamma Chi chapter have been strengthened by recent Brother Nights. Surprisingly competitive no-stakes, no-limit Texas Hold’em, as well as a broomball match each semester, help us blow off some steam while staying tight-knit. There is no doubt that our newest initiate, Brother Sarah Barrigar, has helped foster this family spirit. Her encouragement and laughter are consistent bright spots at the chapter house. The brothers look forward to pledges Philip Kociemba and Adam Tedeschi getting to know the Gamma Chi family and sharing the Kappa Psi tradition. Last but not least, the Gamma Chi chapter looks forward to spending more time with our alumni this semester. This year, our spring “unformal” will be taking place at Craig’s Cruisers in Grand Rapids and at the chapter house. We are also planning a house fix-up date with our alumni. The chapter would like to thank the alumni for helping us make sure the house will continue to provide Gamma Chi a place for our shared history, ritual, brotherhood, and traditions, as well as a home to many of our brothers. —James Mikula

Our famous chili pie always draws a big crowd and is a favorite with the other students and faculty on campus. In addition to fundraising, our chapter has been busy donating time and services to our local Habitat for Humanity. Gamma Omega had two brothers attend Province VII in Dallas this past February. We are proud to say our chapter was awarded the ‘Most Improved Chapter’ title. Toward the end of the fall semester, Kappa Psi faced off against Phi Delta Chi in the annual Hygieia Bowl. This full contact football game has been played every year since the 1970s as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The weather did not cooperate at all and very few people showed up, but we had a good time and raised some money for a great cause. The spring semester is when we have our major charity fundraiser. Every year, the Delta Beta chapter sponsors a golf tournament in order to raise more money for St. Jude’s. Last year we were able to raise $1,500 for St. Jude’s and look to increase that number this year. The golf tournament will be played on April 26 at Sugar Creek Canyon Golf Course in Hinton, Oklahoma. Delta Epsilon has been keeping busy with events such as pizza socials, Ritual Video Night, Meet the Pharmacy Greeks, and pharmacy open house. Our largest undertaking so far this semester was our Healthy Heart project that took place on Valentine’s Day. For this project, we involved faculty brothers, educated the general university population, provided an opportunity for blood pressure screening, as well as raised funds for the American Heart Association. Brothers screened blood pressure for 44 people ranging from university staff, faculty, and students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We handed out brochures outlining heart healthy lifestyles and displayed an educational PowerPoint on heart health during the screening. The project was a great success and was well received by the Duquesne community. Currently in the works for the rest of the semester is a service project with Carson City Towers, a local assisted living facility, an oncampus Easter Egg hunt service project, and Spring Formal. —Alexis Gaggini

In March, we will be holding numerous hypertension screenings at Wal-Mart and CVS to help raise awareness of this very
common health issue. Our Fundraising Committee raised quite a bit of money by holding a pizza lunch for all students at the College of Pharmacy. We are also trying to come up with new designs to sell Kappa Psi apparel. Delta Lambda held a Valentine’s Day dance for the residents of Brookfield Nursing Home in Lillington, North Carolina. Both the residents and brothers had an excellent time celebrating together. Planning is underway for the creation of an annual Cystic Fibrosis Walk, the first of which we hope to hold in fall 2008. This past weekend, we set up a Heart Disease Awareness booth at the Nova Southeastern University Community Fest. It is very important to us that we give back to the community in which we reside.
Our chapter also values every chance that we are able to meet with brothers outside of Delta Rho. In November, we invited Brother Dr. Marvin Smith to speak at our Chapter Development Seminar. The chill of the San Diego winter saw the Delta Phi brothers and Zeta pledge class embracing each other not only for warmth but to learn the ways of Kappa Psi brotherhood. With the conclusion of an exciting rush period last quarter, the brothers threw a Hollywood themed pinning party on November 29 to congratulate the pledges on their first steps towards becoming a Kappa Psi brother. The Zeta pledges and their big bros became the celebrities of the night walking down the red carpet into the party as specially trained Delta Phi security members struggled to hold back the throngs of crazed fans and paparazzi. Throughout the night, movie themed games such as Pin the Oscar on the Actor, movie trivia, charades, and good old-fashioned banter on favorite movies gave the pledges their first taste of the pledge process that would leave them hungering for more. And more they would have. With the New Year still fresh in our minds, we decided to host a new pledge event, the Interview Party. On the night of January 10, the Kappa Psi brothers and Zeta pledge class gathered on the familiar ground of their first-year classroom. The night began with a game of “Point & Shoot” where brothers and pledges struggled to see who could name each other the fastest once the sheets dividing them were dropped. With everyone in good spirits after such a rousing game, the pledges and brothers divided themselves up into smaller groups and began their conversations on randomly chosen topics. Over cheekwarming hot cocoa and cookies, the groups discussed subjects like favorite things and embarrassing moments where many of the brothers and pledges found unexpected commonalities between each other. Their newly found connections prompted them to share more about themselves and each person’s stories fed into the next in a wondrously sociable cycle. Greetings from Delta Psi. This semester is off to a great start. We unfortunately did not receive any new pledges this semester, but we are always promoting Kappa Psi values in our College of Pharmacy to encourage new members. We promote our Delta Psi chapter by participating in fundraisers, social events, philanthropic events, and community events. This semester we participated in February’s Heart Health Awareness Month. We helped to educate fellow students on the ways to keep
your heart healthy. In March, we look forward to educating about cancer for Cancer Awareness Month. This March, we are looking forward to sponsoring a tubing/sledding event for all pharmacy classmates. It is a way to get to know people in other classes better and promote Kappa Psi. In April, our chapter looks forward to attending spring conclave in Brookings, South Dakota. We always have great percentages of our chapter attend conclaves. We hope to get the traveling trophy for a second time!

For community events, our group is looking into many group and individual volunteering opportunities here in Duluth. We are getting involved with the local Habitat for Humanity. We have even started aluminum can collection to raise funds for Habitat. On May 18, our group is participating in the Kidney Walk. Our goal is for each member who walks to raise $100. This event is very important to raise funds for kidney disease research and help raise awareness for kidney disease prevention and screening. —Amanda Westerlund

Founded 12/10/2005 School of Pharmacy Savannah, Georgia 31406
With the prospects of a new year in mind, the Delta Omega chapter is undeniably ambitious. We would like to announce 23 new brothers to Kappa Psi: Nikki Adeniyi, Scott Behrens, Andy Claybaugh, Ashley Dolman, Shari Flynn, Kristen Francis, Laura Francis, Andrea Hamby, Dan Goldman, Hanny Hassan, Emilie Landreth, Lauren Lantz, Lindsey Loworn, Tawnya McAhren, Sheree Pack, Jessie Rodery, Manav Saini, Kyle Saunders, Katie Schillaci, Hollie Shelton, Jonathan Slocum, Deja Stephenson and Ben Thomason. Our newly expanded chapter has enabled us to aim our projects/community outreach high, and we are all motivated to accomplish these goals. Our chapter commenced the year with an excursion to West Palm Beach for Province IV winter conclave 2008. We are proud to congratulate our regent, Heather Franco, for being elected Province IV Historian! Overall, for our new brothers, it was an invaluable learning experience and for ALL of the brothers, it was a rewarding and enjoyable event. We would like to thank our brothers of Delta Upsilon for their hard work and planning in hosting a successful conclave! Already this year, our brothers have participated in the Kappa Psi Ski Trip in Gatlinburg, Tennessee (immense thank-you to our Gamma Psi brothers for hosting the trip!), wore red for Women with Heart Disease Awareness Day, and are now engaged in the selling of our renowned St. Patrick’s Day shirts for GCC fundraising. Most importantly, we have elected our new chapter officers and successfully installed our additional chapter committees. Presently, Delta Omega is preparing to sell more shirts to the community on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, participate in the upcoming Relay for Life, work with Habitat for Humanity, organize our ‘Awareness Months’ events, and host social events for our graduate brothers. With our new committees in place, we have many projects

Epsilon Gamma
Western University Founded 7/28/2007 College of Pharmacy Pomona, CA
Since our last chapter update, we had great successes at both the City of Pomona Holiday Lane Health Fair and the Santa’s Workshop. Our Epsilon Gamma Brother Bonding Trip to Mammoth was a blast and full of great memories, and we can’t wait to repeat the experience next year. Refreshed from our trip, minus some bruises and aches, we started the spring rushing process. After having held five rush events—Bingo Night, Dave & Buster’s, Casino Night, Lunch at Angelo’s Pizzeria, and a barbecue on the final night, we gave out 19 bids to potential brothers for our Delta class. We are currently in the process of pledging, and we will keep you posted in our next update.
Other events that we are organizing this semester include fundraising events, community service, and a graduation banquet for our P4 brothers. Our first fundraising event will be at the 2008 Province IX spring meeting, where we will be selling Kappa Psi long sleeve tees. Epsilon Gamma will also be selling yummy Persian food at Western University’s 2008 Annual Extravaganza that will be held in April. And in May, we will burn off some excess calories at the EIF Revlon Run-Walk for Women. Lastly, we will celebrate the graduation of our P4 Epsilon Gamma brothers by holding a banquet for them on a yacht; however, details are yet to be planned. —Raheleh Eskandar

Terence Steversen. These three have already made a big impact, and we are looking forward to seeing them lead our chapter in the near future. We also have three brothers who started rotations back in May 2007 who are now beginning to see the light at the end of many years of hard work. Johnny Khoury, Brad Laporte, and Mike Vasovski have only a couple weeks of rotations left until graduation. We are all looking forward to seeing them graduate, since it has been a few years since we’ve had a graduation in our chapter. Back in November and December, we once again helped out the St. Vincent de Paul Society at a local church distribute food and Christmas presents to needy families in the area. We helped over 80 families have a complete Thanksgiving and Christmas meal, and many children received presents they may not have gotten without the help of St. Vincent de Paul. In the upcoming months, we will be helping a couple of our graduate brothers by running blood pressure and diabetes clinics at the pharmacy they just opened. This should get us all some great experi-

Boston Graduate Boston Grad has been up to quite a bit recently. We have been getting ready for our annual event, “The Smoker,” which will tentatively take place here in Boston. During the event, the Boston Grad will install new officers of our chapter as well as recognize collegiates who have gone the extra mile in reference to academia and fraternal matters. If there are any brothers interested in attending the event, please notify our regent, Michael Cournoyer, for arrangements. Lastly, the profession of pharmacy is something all of us have been trying to excel at. Regardless of whether we are in school studying for our next medicinal chemistry exam or if we are making sure chemotherapeutic doses are optimal for our patients, we have all been working hard to promote the advancement of our beloved profession. As part of our commitment to the advancement of pharmacy, we have been making plans to set up continuing education credit equivalents through live lectures and home based CEs. Pacific Graduate The winter months have always proven to be active for Pacific Graduate brothers. With rush events, leadership meetings, Province assemblies, along with various other activities, brothers often experienced conflicting events simultaneously. Thank you to all brothers who came out and have continued to make appearances at these events and in support of Gamma Nu. The largest gathering of Pacific Graduate brothers during this time was the Rush Dinner.
On February 2, nearly 40 Gamma Nu alumni attended their Rush Dinner at the newly built Sheraton Hotel in Stockton, California. From near and far, this mixture of faculty, residents, pharmacists and other leaders in their communities sat with the future of Gamma Nu to be another example of the potential that Kappa Psi has to offer. An exquisite buffet, singing cheers, group pictures, and motivating speeches were just part of the evening. Among the speakers were recent alum Ethan Anderson and the current Grand Regent, Lawrence Brown, who made the cross-country flight to have dinner in his old Kappa Psi stomping grounds. Other Pacific Grad brothers in attendance were Adam and Beth Kaye, Sheldon Kong, Mark Walberg, Sunny and Parvinder Bains, Gabe Leung, Chris Amaral, Sam Hodges, Wayne Lam, Roland Lee, Robert and Janis Halliwell, Donald Floriddia, Mike and Nora Pastrick, Brandon Okaneku, Leland Ibarra, Reid Kodani, Dany Khloth, Patrick Catania, Richard Abood, Rajul and Annie Patel, Mike Cuellar, Roger Santos, Eric Gupta, Jason Nakaoka, Binh Tran, Thanh Nguyen (2nd), Ominder Mehta, Denis Meerdink, Warren Shikuma, Sujeev Vhan, Dean Pham, Pat Chan, Greg Umeda, John Apostolo, Justin Borras-Reed, Mike

The Province VII conclave was held February 15–16 in Dallas, Texas. Thanks to Delta Pi for hosting a great Province meeting. The conclave was called to session on Friday evening at 6 p.m. After the meeting, everyone congregated at the Iron Cactus for an evening of brotherhood. Saturday consisted of a full day of meetings. Chapter reports were presented and bylaws were reviewed for changes. A change was made in the Executive Committee structure by separating the office of Secretary/Treasurer. Our philanthropy project this year is called “Kappa Psi for Life,” which is aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle. Each chapter is responsible for creating and holding two health events per school year (i.e. one event per semester). To give each chapter greater flexibility, we are giving them the option of what types of health events to create. Some examples include giving health talks at local schools or wellness events centered on various health conditions such as diabetes, cholesterol, heart disease, etc. In addition to the health events, we are asking each chapter to do a fundraiser to benefit YMCA, as it is a health and wellness affiliated organization. Our goal is to present $5,000 to the YMCA of St. Louis during the 2009 conclave. New officers were elected: Satrap Robert Nunan (Southwestern Grad), Secretary Kyana Stewart (Delta Delta), Treasurer Sean Hawkins (Gamma Theta), Historian Anastasia Roberts (Gamma Pi), and Chaplain Thomas Key (Delta Delta). After a wonderful three-day weekend, long on fun and short on sleep, the brothers of Province X said goodbye for another year until we meet again at Beta Omicron’s home, in Seattle! —Stacy Crow

Chapter Pride. For each chapter it’s different, but it’s there for everyone. For many chapters, their pride is based in their strong traditions. The tradition of being the best organization on campus is a source of pride for many chapters. For years your chapter may have always been the one that the college and community turned to when they needed help. The Red Cross may call every year to find out when the chapter is holding their annual blood drive, or the dean may knock on the door for volunteers for student interviews. Whatever the reason, Kappa Psi has the strong tradition of being the group that gets things done. As we move forward into the future, it is important to continue that tradition at all levels of our great Fraternity. As a chapter, it is your responsibility to ensure that the activities you do to promote fellowship, industry, sobriety, and high ideals are continued for the next generation of brothers. These traditions not only help identify your chapter, they also have a large impact on who you are and give you your Chapter Pride. This Executive Committee is working hard to be an executive committee that “gets things done.” We are working toward fostering Executive Committee “Chapter Pride” and being an executive committee that encourages Fraternity Pride. I am working hard to ensure that as your Grand Historian, I continue that tradition. I promised to give chapters the opportunity to update or create their written history. It is getting done. I hope that each and every one of you can find the same inspiration in Kappa Psi. Chapter Pride means something different to all of us. It is important that we recognize the things we do that make our chapters great and make us who we are as brothers. Kali Jernigan Grand Historian
