The First Word
Greetings from the Heartland It appears the worst of winter is over and spring is in the air. Along with the warmer weather comes the anticipation of the seniors for graduation and the start of hopefully a long, prosperous and fulfilling career in pharmacy. If I can give just one little piece of advice that my dad told me, “Get a job that you like and things will fall into place.” How true that is. I would also like to ask that you, the graduating seniors, not forget Kappa Psi when you get established in your jobs. Please send in your Voluntary Graduate Dues of $50, or about one hour of your salary. I hope Kappa Psi was that important and memorable to you while you were in school to support it after graduation. I enjoyed meeting a lot of you at the APhA Convention in Seattle, and I hope you are making plans to come to San Francisco in
E. Ben Welch, B.S., R.Ph., PharmD., Grand Regent
August for the 55th Grand Council Convention, the 2nd thru the 6th. Dr. Kali Weaver, the Grand Vice Regent, is doing a fantastic job planning for this event, and it should be outstanding. Be sure to go to the Kappa Psi Web site for updates, important convention information, and to register online. For those of you who could not make it to Seattle, at the Kappa Psi Reception, we presented Dr. Robert A. Magarian with the A. Richard Bliss Award for his outstanding contributions to the profession of pharmacy. Dr. Magarian was Executive Director of the Fraternity from 1980 to 2000 and ran the office from the University of Oklahoma’s College of Pharmacy. Bob also reactivated the Gamma Omicron chapter in 1971 and served as their Grand Council Deputy. Enjoy your summer and stay safe.

MEET THE CANDIDATES/Learn about the talented and outgoing brothers who are slated as candidates for the Executive Committee before the votes are cast at GCC.
10 99 HANDS/This issue is full of creative philanthropic ideas. Read about our chapter’s many accomplishments and ways they’ve connected to the greater brotherhood.
22 BROTHERS HELPING OTHERS/We are so proud of the countless hours of service given by brothers this past winter and spring.
Spring Fever Now that spring has finally arrived, brothers across the country have been busy attending Province assemblies, state association meetings, and various national pharmacy events. Along with all these events, the academic year is quickly winding down and finals and graduation are just around the corner. As this issue will show, the Brotherhood has been quite active in your local communities and campuses making a difference in the lives of the people that we reach out to touch and influence. These connections that are made to assist others truly separate Kappa Psi from other organizations. Over the last several months, Kappa Psi brothers have worked with the Ronald McDonald House, raised countless dollars for cancer research, counseled patients on their medications, and also found the time to recruit and instruct our new members into Kappa Psi. Here’s to you Brothers on a job well done on all your accomplishments during this semester. If anyone attended a Province assembly this spring then you probably heard about the 55th Grand Council Convention in San Francisco. In this issue, you will have the opportunity to read the candidate bios and find out a little about the brothers who are vying for a spot on the Kappa Psi International Executive Committee. You will also find the registration form, Kappa Psi Foundation golf tournament information, and in the Final Word Grand Vice Regent Kali Weaver sets the theme for the GCC with “This is my Kappa Psi.” I would like to wish everyone the best of luck on finals and congratulations to all our brothers who are graduating and going on to join the work force or to start your new residencies. Hopefully, everyone is making plans to attend the Grand Council Convention but if not have a safe summer. At this GCC, let us continue to build better pharmacists as we have in the past, present and into the future. Fraternally, Cameron Van Dyke Editor of The MASK Spring 2011

Dave
Maszkiewicz:
Dave is a 1983 initiate of Beta Kappa Chapter at the University of Pittsburgh. He served Beta Kappa as historian in 1985, and was elected as their GCD in 1993, and has continued to serve in that position upto the present time. A very active brother in Province II, Dave has held numerous offices and positions, including 3 terms as Satrap, and has serviced as Province II Parliamentarian for the past 2 years. Nationally, Dave has served on numerous Committees of the Grand Council, including serving as Chairman of the Graduate Development, Legislative, Publications, and GCC Kappa Psi Foundation Raffle committees. Kali Weaver: I was initiated at the Gamma Zeta chapter at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. While there I served the chapter in multiple capacities including vice regent and Province Planning chair. After graduation, I completed a residency with the Jefferson County Department of Health in Birmingham. I currently work in Virginia as a clinical pharmacist and regional project coordinator for automation. In 2007, I married Brother Steve Weaver, an initiate of the Gamma Phi chapter. Before becoming involved internationally, I served Province IV as the Historian and Satrap, and also chaired the Legislative Committee for two years. I have had the great pleasure of serving on your international Executive Committee
for the past six years. I served as Collegiate Member-at-Large and Grand Historian prior to serving as Grand Vice Regent. I have also served as Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor to Province IX. Service to Kappa Psi has indeed been one of my life’s greatest experiences. I have had the pleasure of representing the Grand Regent and serving in his place at charterings as well as serving as chairman of the Executive Committee meeting at ASHP 2009. These opportunities, and many others during my service, have given me insight into the role and duties of the Grand Regent. My years of experience, my various offices, but most importantly, my consistent interaction with my brothers, have played a major role in preparing me for the tasks ahead. I look forward to continuing my service to each of you as your next Grand Regent
E. Ben Welch: Dr. E. Ben Welch was initiated into Gamma Xi Chapter at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina in 1968. As a collegiate, Ben served as parliamentarian and vice regent of Gamma Xi. In Province III, he first served as the GCC Delegate to the 36th GCC in New Orleans. Following that, he served as Satrap of Province III for six years. After graduation, Ben served as regent of the South Carolina Graduate Chapter for another eight years. In 1989, Ben moved cross-country to take a job at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in its Pharmacy Practice Department. Then becoming active in his new province, Dr. Welch served as Satrap and GCC Delegate of Province VII. Currently, Ben is the regent of the Southwestern Graduate Chapter, and he has been involved in the leadership of Southwestern Grad for numerous years. Ben is likely the only brother to ever serve as Satrap for two different provinces and as Regent for two different graduate chapters. Counting the province meetings in both Province III and Province VII, Ben has attended 42 consecutive Province meetings and 20 consecutive GCCs. In 1996, Ben started the Kappa Psi national website and served as our first International Webmaster. During his ten years as International Webmaster, Ben created the brothers’ email directory, created electronic versions of almost every Central Office form and put them online, set up list serves for provinces and GCDs, and set up a general list serve for everyone. Online registration and payment for the GCCs was set up in 1997 at Ben’s direction, and online payments of graduate dues followed shortly afterward. Ben also worked with the Chapter Awards Committee to set up the Chapter Progress Report form in an Excel Spring 2011
spreadsheet, which greatly improved the form for both the chapters and committee. Ben currently serves as Grand Regent. Ben served as Graduate Member-at-Large for two consecutive terms from 1979–83 and as Grand Vice Regent from 1983–85 and 2007–09 and as International Webmaster from 1996–2006.
Michael Cournoyer: Michael was initiated into Kappa Psi in February of 2003 as a Mu chapter brother at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston. Since this time, he has served several Mu chapter, Boston Graduate chapter, Southeastern Massachusetts Graduate chapter, and Province offices. Among those were Boston Graduate chapter regent (’06–’10) and Province I Satrap (’06–’07). He has attended the last four Grand Council Conventions in San Diego, Pittsburgh, Boston, and Clearwater and was a chapter or Province delegate for the last three. Michael currently has the pleasure of serving you as your Grand Historian and is currently working on finalizing a new edition to the history of Kappa Psi. He also serves as the current Mu chapter Grand Council Deputy, Boston Graduate chapter treasurer, Southeastern Massachusetts Graduate chapter vice regent, and as the Province III Supervisor for the past four years. Michael graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with a Bachelor of Science in radiologic science, specializing in nuclear medicine, and from Harvard University’s School of Public Health with a Master of Public Health concentrating in Healthcare Policy and Management. He is employed as a clinical research manager with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. His scope of research projects varies from oncologic to various neurological disease imaging and radiopharmaceutical trials. He currently resides in Salem, Massachusetts. He looks forward to having the opportunity to continue working for all of you on the international Executive Committee over the next several years.

2011 Candidates assistant professor at the University of New England with a specialty in internal medicine. Brother Lacroix has held many local and regional offices in Kappa Psi. Most recently, he has served as the Immediate Past Satrap of Province I and as Grand Ritualist for the Fraternity. Brother Lacroix is also active within APhA and is the APhA-ASP advisor at UNE. For the position of Grand Counselor, his goals would to be to work with chapters to continue the process of modernizing local bylaws and helping chapters have a working knowledge of the Constitution and Bylaws of the Fraternity. Working with the Legislative Committee, he would work toward giving chapters rapid responses to questions raised to help keep them moving forward. For Grand Historian, Matthew would focus on helping chapters keep track of their chapter’s history, working with them to make sure they not only record new history, but start exploring the history that came before.
Robert Mancini: Brother Robert Mancini was initiated into the Delta Phi chapter in San Diego in 2005 and now is a brother of the Montana Graduate chapter. While at Delta Phi, he served as the first sergeant-at-arms for the chapter and established the use of Robert’s Rules of Order while improving the adherence to the local ordinances. He has since served as vice-satrap and satrap of Province IX, as well as chairing the legislative and resolutions committees. Currently, he serves as the chair the continuing education committee of Province X and as the Vice-Regent of Montana Graduate chapter. He has also served Kappa Psi nationally, having had the pleasure of being the assistant supervisor for Province VII over the past two years. As Grand Counselor, he is committed to improving the local ordinance review process, especially reducing the time it takes to produce feedback and approvals. He will also focus on improving the utilization and understanding of Robert’s Rules of Order, so that chapters can utilize them more efficiently in their meetings. He is looking forward to meeting many of you in San Francisco, and discussing any questions, suggestions or concerns that brothers may have.
Jason Milton: Jason Milton is a 2004 initiate of the Gamma Phi chapter at the University of Georgia in Athens. Following graduation in 2008, Jason completed his MBA in healthcare management and began medical

school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine-Georgia Campus. In addition, he is also an officer in the United States Navy Reserve Medical Corps. Jason remains active in Kappa Psi as the supervisor of Province IX, the legislative committee chair of Province IV, and the regent of the Georgia Graduate chapter. Jason believes that it is important for all brothers to remember that we are not members of Kappa Psi; rather we are Kappa Psi. He believes holding onto our traditions and preserving our rituals are an integral aspect of our growth and success as brothers and professionals. As a graduate brother, he believes strongly in promoting the pillars of Kappa Psi in all that he does; personally, socially, and professionally.
Christy Askew: Christy is an initiate of Epsilon chapter at the University of Minnesota. She graduated in 1996 and after completing a residency, she worked as a decentral pharmacist in Milwaukee. Since 2001, she has worked at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Christy offers a 10-week acute patient care rotation for eight students per year and precepts the resident critical care rotation. In addition to Kappa Psi, she is an active member of ASHP, ACCP, MSHP, MCCP and SCCM. As a brother of Epsilon, Christy served as vice regent, chair of the Fundraising Committee for two terms, and as a member of the PharmaCOPA Committee. Since graduation she has been an active member of the Minnesota Graduate chapter, holding the positions of secretary-treasurer (1995–1998 and 2001–2006), historian (2006–2008), and regent (2008–present). Christy is also very active on a Province level. She has attended 67 Province assemblies, at least one meeting in every Province. In Province VIII, Christy was twice elected Historian and in fall 2011 completes her second year as Satrap. Currently, Christy is chair of the Province Development Committee (2007–2011) and is a member of the Graduate Development Committee. She was also appointed to the position of Assistant Supervisor for Province II. In the past, she served as the Province Supervisor Liaison (2007–2009), Supervisor of Province X (2001–2003) and Province III (2005–2007), and Assistant Supervisor for Province I (2007–2009). On an international level, in addition to her current appointments, Christy has co-chaired the Risk Management Committee (2005–2007) and served as a member of the Ritual (2003– 2005), Graduate Development (1999–2005), and the Frank H. Eby Award (1997–1999) Committees.

Since initiation she has attended every GCC as a Delegate or Alternate Delegate. Christy looks forward to using her broad Kappa Psi experience to serve the Brotherhood during the next two years.
Peter M. Brody: Peter is a 1998 initiate of the Gamma Iota Chapter, graduating from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharma ceutical Sciences in 2002. He currently serves the fraternity as Grand Council Deputy of Gamma Iota, Vice Regent of Buffalo Grad, and a member of the National GCD and Graduate Development Committees. Past duties included service on several national committees, two consecutive terms as Province V Satrap, and as Graduate Member-at-Large from 2007–2009. In over twelve years as a brother of this great fraternity, he has attended more than 40 province meetings around the country (and Canada!) and has never missed a GCC, attending his seventh convention this summer at the 55th GCC in San Francisco. Peter is a full-time faculty member (clinical assistant professor) with the SUNY Buffalo School of Pharmacy and also serves as their Director of Experiential Education. In 2010, he was recognized as the school’s Teacher of the Year and has recently become the residency director for a PGY1 community pharmacy program with an independent pharmacy in the WNY area. He remains a dedicated and active brother of Kappa Psi and hopes to be able to build on his past and current experiences with the fraternity, serving proudly on the national level as Grand Historian over the next two years.
Latha Radhakrishnan: Latha received her Pharm.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 1998. She subsequently completed a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and a primary care specialty residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Currently, she is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at UIC and a clinical oncology pharmacist at the University of Illinois Medical Center. Latha is an initiate of the Chi chapter at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy. As a collegiate brother, she held the offices of Social chairperson and Kappa Psi Student Council representative. She also served as the Co-Social chairperson for the 1996 Province V assembly held in Chicago.
In 2006, she was an integral member in revitalizing the Illinois Graduate chapter. She has held the office of chapter regent for the past five years. As a graduate brother, she has held the positions of Public Relations chairperson (2007–2009), Province IX Assistant Supervisor (2007–2009), and the 54th GCC Resolutions chairperson. Currently, Latha is the Graduate Member-atLarge for the international Executive Committee. She is a Grand Council Deputy (GCD) for the Chi chapter. As the chapter GCD and the Illinois Graduate chapter regent, she was able to collaborate with both chapters to put on a successful Chi chapter Centennial Celebration in April 2010. On a national level, she holds the positions of Graduate Development Committee chairperson and Province VII Supervisor. She is also a member of Rho Chi Honor Society, Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society, and Pi Beta Phi National Sorority. As the current Graduate Member-at-Large, she has worked hard to increase the graduate brother retention rate and to promote “Kappa Psi for Life.” She truly hopes that the Brotherhood continues to support her efforts as an international officer for the next two years.
Eric Geyer: I pledged Kappa Psi in 2003 at the Beta Lambda chapter in Toledo, Ohio, from which I graduated with a PharmD in 2009. As a brother of Beta Lambda, I served as historian, pledgemaster, and regent. During my time as Regent, Beta Lambda won the Most Improved Chapter Award and attended GCC for the first time in quite a while. I also helped serve as the Province V Midyear chairperson in 2007, which was the first time Beta Lambda hosted a Province meeting in 13 years. While still a brother of Beta Lambda, I served as the Province V Secretary and made an effort to visit as many chapters as possible to share ideas and to find ways to improve the chapters. During that year, I managed to visit five Province V chapters and one Province VIII chapter. I am currently serving as the Province V GCC Delegate and have worked to show collegiate brothers ways to reduce the cost of going to GCC as well as the many benefits of GCC. On a national level, I have served on the Collegiate Development committee and am currently serving on the GCC 2011 Planning Committee as well as the Risk Management Committee. This work inspired me to visit other Provinces and chapters outside of Province V, including meetings in Provinces II, IV, VIII and some individual chapters. These experiences along with serving as a Co-GCD of Beta Lambda have really showed me Kappa Psi is for life!
Harry Patrick Marcelin: My name is Harry Patrick Marcelin, and I would like to serve you as a member of the Executive Committee. I had the privilege to pledge at the Beta Xi chapter (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and became a brother in April of 2003. Throughout my collegiate career, I had the opportunity to grow and mature as a brother by holding positions as intramural chair, chaplain, and assistant pledgemaster as well as being a Big Brother in the Fraternity. Each of these positions taught me how to lead by example and to aspire to do whatever it took to make my chapter and Fraternity the best it could be. I had the privilege of serving Province III as Satrap in 2007–08. During my time serving as Satrap, I had an opportunity to use the experiences I learned in my chapter and focus them on improving the Province. In my post-collegiate era, I still find myself having such a great passion for our beloved Fraternity. The opportunity to provide mentorship is one like no other. I have the great honor to give back to my Fraternity by providing guidance to my collegiate brothers at Epsilon Mu (University of Florida at Orlando). Kappa Psi is contagious—the more one receives from the Fraternity, the more one wants to give back. Please give me the opportunity to give more by being a member of your Executive Committee.
Jean Starvaggi: I was initiated into the Beta Kappa chapter at the University of Pittsburgh in January 1989. I served my chapter as secretary and vice-regent. I graduated in 1992 and I am the current regent of the Harrisburg graduate chapter. I have held membership in the following graduate chapters: Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Providence, West Virginia and Columbus. As a Brother of Province II, I have been on all standing committees and have served as the Awards committee chairperson for 20 years. I proudly served on the Province II executive board for 9 years, holding the offices of Secretary, Vice-Satrap and Satrap. On the International level, I have proudly served on the following committees: Ritual, Risk Management, and Publications. I was honored to be appointed to be Province I’s Assistant Supervisor also. During my pledging I had a strong group of mentors, many of which were graduate brothers. They instilled in me the importance of continuing Brotherhood past graduation. They led by example and I hope that I am continuing that proud tradition. I believe that type of communication and example is essential for the future of our graduate chapters. Spring 2011
I have continued to attend Province II assemblies which, I believe, keep me in touch with collegiate brothers who are graduating and looking to continue to be involved after graduation. I wish all the Brothers that are attending the GCC safe travels, a successful convention and I hope to meet many of you through the course of the week.
Paul A. Cyprus: I was initiated into Mu Omicron Pi at Wayne State University in the fall of 1979 and received Best Pledge and Asklepios Key awards. I served MOPi as corresponding secretary and social chair. At WSU, I was vice president of Student Pharmacy Association, and served as vice president and president of the class. After graduation, I served the WSU Pharmacy Alumni Association as vice president and president. I received the Community Service Award from the Michigan Society of Hospital Pharmacists. I served the Detroit Graduate chapter as chaplain, vice regent and regent for multiple terms. I was Detroit Graduate Bingo chairman for three years. I served Province V on multiple committees, including Province Assembly planning committees, and as Province Alternate GCC Delegate. I volunteered to represent the Detroit Grad Delegate to more Province meetings then I can remember. I have visited most Provinces over the last few years. Nationally, I have served on the credentials, Province development, and graduate development committees. I have been on the Kappa Psi Foundation Raffle Committee for the last five GCCs. I have been on the 1981 and 2011 GCC committees. I attended 12 of the last 15 GCCs and served as Detroit Grad Delegate to most of them. I worked at St. John Hospital for 10 years, owned Valley Pharmacy for 10 years and have been employed at Rite Aid Pharmacy since 2002. I hope to use my 32 years of experience as a brother to serve the Fraternity as an international officer. I believe maintaining permanent e-mails and cell phone numbers of collegians as they become grads builds stronger graduate chapters.
Leonard M.F. Etuk: My name is Leonard Michael Ferdinand Etuk, aka “LTrain.” I was initiated at Mu chapter in 1996, at MCP, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical science. I’ve held numerous offices with Kappa Psi including Mu chapter regent and Boston Grad vice regent. I currently serve on the history committee presided over by Brother Michael Cournoyer. I currently reside in Atlanta, work

2011 Candidates for Walgreens, and am studying toward my master’s degree in health administration. I’ve been a brother for 15 years now and I couldn’t be more in love with the brotherhood. The family bonds I’ve made throughout the Fraternity know no bounds. When I heard that I was nominated for Graduate Member at Large I was honored. I’m truly humbled by the vote of confidence and will take it seriously. Some of you might be asking yourself, “Who is this guy and where did he come from?” The only answer I have for you is . . . you’ll find out very soon. Those brothers who know me will tell you that I am serious about brotherhood—the real meaning of brotherhood. I’m here for the Fraternity and I will bring the same tenacity that I bring to Province I. I look forward to meeting some new faces in the months to come and I promise I will be available to everyone that is curious to know what I mean by “brotherhood.”
Melissa Buchanan: Melissa was initiated into the Delta Lambda chapter in November 2008 and is a Pharm.D./MSCR 2012 candidate at Campbell University. She is the current Province III Historian and has served on the Province Philan thropy, Resolutions, Province Development, and Scholarship Committees. On the chapter level, Melissa has served as the ritualist ( ’09 –’10), Province Delegate ( ’09 –’11), GCC Delegate (’09), and has also been a member of the Judiciary, Service, Province, and Scholarship Committees. She was also the 2010 recipient of the Brie Anne Reynolds Memorial Scholarship which is in memory of a Delta Lambda brother who showed exemplary character and dedication to the Fraternity. Nationally, she is one of the Province III representatives on the Philanthropy Committee. As of March 2011, Melissa has attended five Province III and three Province IV meetings since becoming a brother. Outside of Kappa Psi, Melissa has been active in other pharmacy organizations. She was appointed to the national ASHP Education and Programming Advisory Group ( ’10–’11) and has served as Campbell’s SSHP president (’09 –’11) and president-elect (’08 –’09). Melissa was inducted into Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Honor Society in January 2010 and served as the treasurer (’10–’11). She has also been an active member of APhA-ASP. She enjoys traveling and has attended the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meetings, ASHP Summer Meeting, APhA Annual Meeting, PLS Leadership Development Conference, and Cardinal Health’s 11th Annual Student Leadership Conference.

Brandon Corpening: Brandon is currently in his third year at the Mercer University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended the University of Tennessee where he majored in biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology. He was initiated in the spring of 2009 into the Gamma Psi chapter at Mercer University where he previously served as the chapter’s pledgemaster and currently serves as its regent. Kyle Hake: My name is Kyle Hake and I am running for Collegiate Member-atLarge at the next GCC meeting this summer. I am a junior, soon to be senior, at the University of Toledo and a proud brother of the Beta Lambda chapter. I am really excited to be nominated and run for such a prestigious officer position at the national level. I am currently the regent at the Toledo chapter and have been actively involved in pushing our chapter to new heights professionally and socially. My future plans are to run for a Province level position and continue bettering myself as a leader, professional, pharmacist, and person. Thank you to the Toledo Grad chapter for the nomination, and I hope to be your future Collegiate Member-at-Large!
Khalil Khlifi: Khalil is currently a third-year student at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Psi, he is also a member of ASP, AACP, HOPA, Phi Lambda Sigma, Senior Legacy Committee, and ASHP.
Ben Sturm: Ben Sturm, of Mu chapter, is currently a fifth-year Pharm.D. student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He was initiated into Mu chapter on March 1, 2006. Since that time, he has held the office of sergeant at arms, regent, as well as vice regent of the chapter. At the Province I level, he has been an active brother on both the Legislative and Province Development Committees. He helped host the 2007 GCC in Boston and attended the 2009 GCC in Clearwater Beach while serving as the Mu chapter regent. Ben played an integral part in bringing Mu chapter back to recognition after becoming regent in March of 2009. He worked with the brothers of Mu chapter and Boston Graduate chapter to update policies, meet with school officials, and restore Mu chapter’s status as the oldest active collegiate chapter within Kappa Psi. During this time, Ben helped keep the brothers of Mu chapter unified toward their common goal by arranging regular meetings, social events, and various community service projects both on and off campus. Ben is also the student representative on the MCPHS Curriculum Committee, which is responsible for the review and evaluation of the College’s Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum. After graduation, Ben intends to pursue either a residency or fellowship to help further the profession of pharmacy on a professional level.
Johnny Wong: Johnny Wong was initiated as a brother in Kappa Psi in November 2008 at the Beta Omicron chapter at the University of Washington. Over the past year, he served as his chapter’s chaplain and led the development of a stronger pledge program and greater inclusion of the Rituals into the chapter’s activities. In 2010–11, he volunteered to visit and assist the Delta Mu chapter at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. There he helped recruit and initiate a new pledge class, facilitating their growth from two brothers to more than 20 active brothers/pledges. In addition, he traveled to Pacific University in Oregon to support the chartering and initiation of the new Epsilon Xi chapter in Province X. He has attended numerous Province X meetings and also visited conclaves in Provinces IX and V as a way to increase his interaction with
fellow brothers and to learn from their experiences. He also serves on the national Publications Committee of Kappa Psi. In February 2011, Johnny was elected to serve as Province X Chaplain. He hopes to use the knowledge and experience he’s gained thus far to help strengthen his Province’s inter-chapter bonds and their proper use and understanding of our Rituals. As Collegiate Member-at-Large, he hopes to actively visit chapters/Provinces, maintain open and consistent lines of communication with brothers, and pay special attention to strengthening the pledge process for Kappa Psi. Johnny is currently a third-year student at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy in Seattle, and looks forward to graduation in June of 2012.

As Regent, Dan led Beta Kappa to a #2 international ranking and Province II Chapter of the Year. In 2010, he was the recipient of the Beta Kappa Industry Award. He has attended every Province II Assembly since his initiation, and served on Province committees each time. Dan presented a Ritual Workshop at the Spring 2010 Province II Assembly in Pittsburgh. He also attended the Spring 2010 Province V Assembly and Chi Centennial in Chicago and the Spring 2011 Province III Assembly in Baltimore. Outside of Kappa Psi, Dan was a 2010 inductee of Phi Lambda Sigma and served Pitt’s chapter as treasurer in 2010–2011. Dan is an active member of APhA-ASP as a member of the Social Committee since 2009, and he attended the Annual Meetings in Washington, DC (2010) and Seattle (2011). He served as a resident assistant in the Pitt Residence Halls from 2007–2011. In his free time, Dan enjoys running, traveling, and meeting new people. He encourages all brothers to come speak with him in San Francisco about his vision for this position and the Fraternity.

Epsilon University of Minnesota Founded 4/30/1928 College of Pharmacy, 5‐130 Weaver Densford Hall, 308 Harvard Street S.E. Minneapolis, MN 55455‐0343 epsilon@kappapsi.org
This winter, Epsilon brothers had interfraternal bonding in mind when we held a joint ‘Feed My Starving Children’ event with the Theta chapter of Phi Delta Chi. Together, we hand-packed meals that were sent to undernourished children in nearly 70 countries around the world. Thanks to the rousing success of the chapter’s special diabetes-friendly Valentine’s Day bake sale, we were able to donate $600 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Brothers also took part in JDRF’s annual walk at the Mall of America. We also spent time at a church in North Minneapolis screening members of the community for kidney damage as part of the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Early Evaluation Program. Brothers managed to squeeze in some social time between our philanthropies and our hectic academic schedules. We donned ugly sweaters to enjoy a dinner at our dean’s house. We also put on our dancing shoes for the Pharmacy Gala at Solera restau-

The Gala is a night on the town that benefits the Michelle Mentzer Scholarship and the Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Since Michelle was a brother, it’s an event that is close to our hearts. As always, Epsilon brothers continue our proud traditions of STI education and intramural volleyball. We’re also busy implementing process improvements to the pharmacy at the Phillips Neighborhood Clinic, where brothers spend two nights a week dispensing and educating on medications to underserved patients. Everyone is enjoying the amazing weather at Iota chapter. Brother Saswat Kabisatpathy has helped form an intramural softball team and with the talent at Iota, it may be difficult to find competition! Brothers responded
to a letter to the editor regarding cleaning around a local landmark. A boat on the side of Folly Road is frequently painted by various people to celebrate birthdays and events, but unfortunately not everyone cleans up afterward. Concern about paint leaching into the marshes was raised, so brothers pitched in to clean up. Robert DeClue, Dan McGraw, Charles Crickman, Gunter Bullock, Chris Giguere, Billy Grooms, and Dr. James Sterrett donated an afternoon to help the environment and the community. Brothers Trey Reeves, Drayton Hammond, Travis Combs, Mina Georgy, Andy Curtis, Ryan Linton, and Saswat Kabisatpathy worked information booths at the local health fair. The annual health fair is always a lot of fun for families in the community. This year there was a bounce castle, music, food, and a raffle. Iota chapter sponsored two different booths, Men’s Health and Poison Prevention. The Men’s Health booth discussed ways of preventing heart disease, and the Poison Prevention booth handed out Mr. Yuck stickers and had a game where kids learned to differentiate between candy and medicine. In other news, Iota is planning its first formal and a gentlemen’s night with Charleston Grad.

Spring is an exciting time for us here in Boston. Recently, we proudly initiated 13 new members to Mu chapter. Congratulations to Peter Assad, Karan Amin, Aman Patel, David Roche, Drew Stevens, Al Dowrey, John Prime, Joe Calzaretta, Zac Guerrini, Brandon Wright, Adam Azargoon, Andrew Terleski and Paul Mainella who have proven themselves worthy to wear our beloved letters for life. We are currently preparing a team for the Relay for Life. Last year, our team raised the most money out of all other teams here at MCPHS and hopes to return this year with similar results. Donations were received from
graduate brothers as well as collegiate brothers, yet again reminding us of the 99 hands willing to help. Finally, Mu chapter would like to congratulate Beta Epsilon on their upcoming 100th anniversary, and we are all looking forward to celebrating with them at the upcoming Province I meeting.
Xi The Ohio State University Founded 5/21/1925 College of Pharmacy, 500 W. 12th Ave., Columbus, OH 43210‐1291 xi@kappapsi.org
Xi welcomes 32 new brothers to our chapter this year—our biggest pledge class ever! The ceremony was blessed with the presence of our two Grand Council Deputies, Jackie Schneider and Andrew Frasco. Our chapter welcomed the new brothers with open arms and celebrated over dinner at Columbus’ very own Spaghetti
Warehouse. We are extremely excited to have such interest in our Fraternity. Our largest fundraising and philanthropic event this quarter has been the Valentine’s Day Cookie Gram sale, which doubled as a cookie-baking night for the local Ronald McDonald House. The brothers in our chapter donated cookie dough, baking utensils, frosting, food coloring, and money to the event, and we baked more than 150 cookies! Our chapter would like to thank Brother Dori Velt, who singlehandedly coordinated the Kappa Psi cookie gram event. With the approach of spring and summer, our chapter looks forward to a future social event with the Columbus Grad chapter as well as the spring assembly in Detroit. We are proud to have 35 brothers representing Xi at the meeting and look forward to hearing of their experiences! —Nhung Nguyen Spring 2011
The Pi chapter brothers have had a busy spring semester. On January 23, we welcomed 11 new members into our Fraternity. We celebrated the occasion with a banquet at the Elks Country Club. The biggest change our chapter has implemented this semester is the introduction of a point system to help encourage brother involvement. We are also organizing volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, and Boiler Blast. We plan to sell Black Box Warning T-shirts as a fundraiser this semester. Pi chapter will be hosting a 5K Run to benefit the Ronald McDonald House on Saturday, September 10, from 9–11 a.m. All other chapters are invited to attend. We will also be creating care packages for the children. —Rachel Snodgrass

To raise money for the National Marrow Donor Program, Rho chapter brothers jumped into icy Clinton Lake for our annual Polar Bear Plunge. Luckily, none of the divers were seriously injured or hypothermic after their submersion. The Province VII meeting was held in Houston, Texas, February 24–27. Twenty-one brothers and Kimberly Guess, one of our GCDs, left the cold and snow of Kansas behind to embrace the warm weather of Texas. We had a fantastic time meeting up with our Kappa Psi brothers in the other chapters. Rho chapter is very excited to have our very own Jessica Mosiman serve as the new Province VII Historian for the next term. The weekend in Houston was filled with excitement, and some moments of great anxiety, when one of our rental cars went missing. Thank you to the Houston Police Department for finding our lost/towed car! All in all, we had a great time on our trip. Later this spring, we will be holding our second annual Mr. Pharmacy Pageant, a charity golf tournament, a 5P appreciation dinner, and the schoolwide pharmacy formal. Officer elections will take place and the turning-over of offices will occur this spring, as well. Our regent, Carissa Osner, did a fantastic job this year! From all of Rho chapter, we’d like to thank Carissa for her hard work in making our organization a huge success this year. I’d also like to personally thank my fellow executive board members and the entire Rho chapter for all of their great work and enthusiasm this year. —Elizabeth Berland

Then the next day, Sigma chapter, as host of the Province III spring assembly, welcomed more than 300 brothers from various Provinces (I, II, IV, V, and VIII) and almost all the International Executive Committee to Baltimore, Maryland, to celebrate brotherhood on the weekend of January 28–29. past Sigma regent (Class of 1985), delivered a comical and informative CE on opioid use, while other brothers prepared care packages for women and children at YANA Place (You Are Never Alone, www.yana place.org), an organization dedicated to helping victims of sex trafficking. It was a pleasure to share our brand new Pharmacy Hall with everyone, and the funds saved by hosting at our school allowed the Province to donate an additional $500 to YANA Place. Many thanks for the service of our brothers: Anh Tran and Serena Yang as planning chairs and Eric Wong and Chris Charles on the 2010–2011 Province III Executive Board. And congrats to our newly elected 2011–2012 Executive Board members, Bonnie Li and Andrew Haines.
The tradition of service and brotherhood continued when Sigma and Delta Kappa participated in the first ever Scavenger Hunt in the Washington, D.C. area on February 12. Brothers competed in teams to collect items, varying from oatmeal to laundry detergent to Tang, to donate. Food items were donated to the nonprofit organization Bread for the City, and paper goods were donated to Loaves and Fishes, one of the few kitchens open to the homeless on the weekends. Brothers used different strategies to gather items, asking local pharmacists, small business owners, or supermarket customers for either a monetary or item donation. In the end, brothers collected enough items to fill up an entire Honda CR-V. The event was such a success that brothers have started strategizing for next year’s Scavenger Hunt. In honor of Valentine’s Day, a group of Sigma brothers visited patients at the University of Maryland Medical Center Pediatric Unit for an afternoon of crafts and card-making fun. The patient floor consisted of 30 kids ranging from infants to 18-yearolds, although most were in between 6 and 12 years of age. Volunteers provided patients with handmade Valentine’s Day cards and art supplies to decorate bags to collect their cards. Music and crafts made it enjoyable for kids and volunteers alike. Our chapter also participated in a two-day Bone Marrow Registration Drive sponsored by APAMSA that took place at the University of Maryland Baltimore student campus center. We helped participants complete the registration process for the National Marrow Donor Program’s Be The Match Marrow Registry, which

The brothers of Upsilon continue to be leaders in other student pharmacy organizations as well. They are currently serving as officers in the Rho Chi Society, the Kentucky Alliance of Pharmacy Students, and the first ever UK Student Chapter of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy. Two of the four class presidents at UK are also brothers in Kappa Psi. Still others are members of Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society. As we close the semester, we look forward to continued success. “Snowpocalypse, thundersnow, snowmageddon”! With the city of Chicago buried under two feet of snow, our Chi brothers had an eventful and fun snow day. Rather than sit by a fire and sip cocoa during the third largest recorded snowstorm in Chicago’s history, Chi brothers banded together to help out their stranded brothers by digging out their cars and clearing up their sidewalks, while having fun at the same time. Our social chair, Aalok Shah, organized the largest snowball fight in Chi chapter history. Many of our West Coast neophytes got their first taste of a true Chicago winter. Brothers met at Arrigo Park decked out in full snow gear just as the storm subsided. Everyone split up into teams and planned their attack. Those who chose not to fight built snowmen in the same spot where we grilled burgers for the annual Kappa Psi Rush Barbecue a few months earlier. Apart from all of the fun, several brothers were stranded as their cars were cloaked under a veil of snow and ice. Chi brothers living close banded together to help dig out brother’s cars and help less able members of the community. Several other brothers went out of their way to help their fellow brother whose car wouldn’t start. It soon became apparent that Chi brothers are never stranded long when their brothers are nearby!

The Psi chapter of Memphis and the Knoxville campus both enjoyed participating in several social and service events with newly initiated members. In the fall, the Memphis brothers had a great ‘Big Brother’ revealing. We coordinated two water stations at miles 12 and 13 for the St. Jude Marathon, where we cheered on thousands of runners including many pharmacy classmates. The brothers at the Knoxville campus participated with the Ronald McDonald House charity to provide their house with yard work and cleanup. On Valentine’s Day, brothers on the Memphis campus spent an evening having fun with the children and families at the Ronald McDonald House. Brothers set up a tailgate when the Vols football team played at the Memphis Liberty Bowl Stadium. Many Kappa Psi members, alumni, and faculty were able to socialize and rock their orange apparel. The brothers and pledges of Beta Gamma have been busy. Our fall quarter ended well when the pledges surprised the brothers with “Secret Santa” gifts. This was a generous and fun gesture, spearheaded by Michael Creason, Kayla Roth, and Jeff Moss. All the brothers were impressed that the pledges were thinking of them, even during their first round of finals. On January 15, about 25 brothers and pledges trekked to Lands End, a scenic area of coast, and volunteered with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservatory. More than a thousand native plants were added to the park habitat, while everyone enjoyed the beautiful views of Sutro Baths. The brothers and pledges also volunteered at Glide Memorial Church, serving meals with their Daily Free Meals program. On January 21, we inducted 15 new Beta Etas. What a great way to kick off the semester! For our first event, we hosted a presentation by our professor and fellow Kappa Psi brother, Dr. Gretchen Kreckel, on the future of immunizations in pharmacy. Brothers
joined members of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy and Phi Lambda Sigma at the WVU Dance Marathon, a fundraiser for the West Virginia University Children’s Hospital. The 16-hour event, which took place on February 26, had the participants (and some patients!) showing off their dance skills. Children who had received treatment at the hospital made an appearance and their families shared stories of personal struggles and recoveries. Our first social activity was a trip to Dave & Buster’s in Pittsburgh on March 4. We hosted a semiformal benefit for the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk on March 10. Our chapter always takes part in the event, and the benefit allows us to make a larger contribution to the national organization. Brothers of the Beta Kappa chapter kicked off the spring semester with our annual ski trip to Seven Springs. Spring 2011
This year we had more than 70 brothers travel to the local ski resort for a weekend of relaxation and bonding. Many took advantage of the fresh snow that fell over the weekend by skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and playing football in it. The brothers spent the rest of January enjoying the many events that the school’s Pharmacy Week had to offer, including OTC jeopardy, a talent show, an auction, and, of course, the annual ASP formal. The formal, which was planned by two Beta Kappa brothers, allowed everyone a night out in Pittsburgh with the other students and faculty members. At the end of Pharmacy Week, the guys of Beta Kappa participated in the annual Kappa Psi vs. Phi Delta Chi football game with the rest of the chapter cheering them on. Since the start of the semester, the brothers have been busy participating in the usual philanthropic events such as blood pressure screenings and cooking for Family House, as well as a couple of new events which include painting for Union Project and participating in a Wellness Fair in one of the residence halls. In the mix of these events, brothers have been working hard to plan the rest of a busy semester. We kicked off spring break with our second annual trip to Dave & Buster’s for a night of food and games. Upon returning from spring break, Beta Kappa had annual social events such as the Black and White party, Pirates tailgate, and spring formal. We also look forward to attending the Province II assembly held by our neighbors, Delta Epsilon. The Beta Lambda chapter had an exciting and successful 2010. There have already been a lot of activities going on within the chapter in 2011, from planning different philanthropic and fundraising events, implementation of the new committees, the start of a new pledge season to planning of social events and bringing back our traditional STAG brother/alumni event. The brothers of Beta Lambda are working hard to promote the name and influence of Kappa Psi within the Toledo community. Over this past fall semester, we successfully recruited eight brothers. To further increase our number, we increased our Rush Week events to include Casino Night, Game Night, and dining at local favorites. We currently have seven pledges. Last year, five brothers attended the fall assembly at Buffalo, New York. It was an experience that truly opened our eyes to the vastness that is Kappa Psi. During this convention, our chapter became acquainted with the brothers of Mu Omicron Pi and Pi. Since then, we have been trying to plan events to bring the chapters together to further the bonds of Brotherhood. Brother Tim Watts has made a trip to Detroit to visit the brothers of Mu Omicron Pi, and the brothers of Gamma Delta have visited us in Toledo twice this year already. We are looking forward to hosting

This year, we are looking forward to expanding our philanthropy and fundraising events. We go to Food for Thought every other Friday night where we prepare bagged lunches for the homeless in downtown Toledo. We are also planning events at local shelters, assisted living facilities, Ronald McDonald House, etc. Adopta-Highway is another project that we are looking forward to starting in the summer/fall. Several of the Beta Lambda brothers are also involved in a mentoring program for local grade school students. As far as fundraising events go, we are involved in the concession stands at the Toledo hockey arena and are looking forward to doing some concession work at the Toledo baseball arena. Brothers also intend to work at Cedar Point for a weekend and are planning Halo Reach and Call of Duty tournaments. One of the most exciting happenings this semester is the STAG brother/alumni event we are planning in

The brothers of Beta Nu are planning social events and volunteer opportunities amidst the busy spring
semester. To keep everybody energized, we are having an exciting March Madness league. This will keep everyone’s spirits up, even as the bitter Nebraska winter and demanding schedule of classes threatens to keep us confined to the library. Social events planned for the semester, include a movie night, a “Minute to Win It” night, and an outing to a Creighton baseball game. It’s not all fun and games here in Omaha, though. We have a ton of volunteer opportunities and are looking forward to giving back to the community. We are participating in Relay for Life March 25–26 and so far, more than 700 Creighton students have signed up! This event is a favorite of Beta Nu; it’s a fun way to get involved in the Creighton community and support the American Cancer Society. Many brothers are also volunteering their time at the Ronald McDonald

We talk to the high school students about pharmacy as a career, and we educate elementary students about the dangers and toxicities of household products. When the weather gets nicer, we are planning on getting outside and participating in our annual park cleanup. We are all looking forward to the Spring Banquet in April when we will commemorate the accomplishments of the chapter, induct officers, give out awards, and wrap up another great year. Our chaplain, Tiffany Brown, has been very enthusiastic in planning this night and we appreciative her hard work. —Kelli Dvorak
The spring 2011 rush season included a pharmacy school info session for undergraduates; community service night making Valentine’s Day room decorations for the UNC Children’s Hospital; game night playing Apples to Apples, Catch Phrase, and Dance Central on the Xbox Kinect; a bonfire and social at the Beta Xi house; trivia night at Kildaire’s; sports night at the house watching a Carolina basketball game; steak dinner and social at the house; and concluding with formal rush. It was a successful rush, as we inducted 13 pledges! The brothers of Beta Xi are also involved in countless community service, professional, fundraising, and social activities. We continue to organize Bingo Night at the SECU Family House, which serves as a home away from home for patients and families receiving treatment at UNC Hospitals. It is always a joy to interact with them and engage in some good-natured Bingo competition. Relay for Life, Beta Xi’s major philanthropic project, is the focus of the spring semester. We continue to fundraise for our team through partnerships with restaurants like Carolina Brewery and California Pizza Kitchen. A strong showing of Beta Xi brothers made their way up to Baltimore, Maryland, on January 28 for the
spring Province III conclave hosted by the Sigma chapter. Thanks to our hosts for their hospitality and planning. We were able to have both a great and productive time. To top it off, Beta Xi won the Province III Academic Excellence Award! Beta Xi promotes the profession of pharmacy at various recruitment events, targeting grade school, high school, and college students. Brothers have participated in Explore Carolina, UNC Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) meetings, the NC Health Careers Access Program, UNC Health Careers Info Fair, and recruitment at local high schools. Upcoming events include the annual food drive at the pharmacy school and PMR at Emerald Pond Retirement Community. We have been working in the various pharmacies of UNC Hospitals, checking the inventories for expired and compromised medications. Beta Xi has also been part of the crew to clean up the Dean E. Smith Center after Carolina basketball games. To celebrate the end of the semester and the holidays, Beta Xi had a winter semiformal that included dinner at P.F. Chang’s and a Secret Santa gift exchange. We will have formal in Savannah, Georgia, on April 16. But right now, we are looking forward to our famous Tunnel Party in Chapel Hill. We are anticipating more than 100—if not more than 200—of our Kappa Psi brothers and friends to come for the 31st Annual Tunnel Party. A night of crawling though the Spring 2011

So what has Beta Omicron been up to since the last issue? The first thing we did after winter break was our annual ski trip to Mount Baker. We got a lot of new brothers out onto the snow, which was falling all weekend. It has always been one of the greatest bonding moments for our chapter, especially with all of the new initiates. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the brothers gave back to our community by getting our hands dirty helping at the Highline SeaTac Botanical Gardens. The gardens are operated by the local community as a place for public exhibitions and educational programs for horticulture. Brothers braved the cold winds and rain to help with restoration and maintenance projects on the grounds. That same week, the brothers got together to help an amazing organization, the Food Lifeline. Brothers showed up at the Food Lifeline warehouse in North Seattle, and Beta Omicron brothers packed 3,480 pounds of food, enough to fill 2,677 meals! It was a giving back kind of week for Beta Omicron. The end of January had a couple of big events for Beta Omicron and Province X. A few of the brothers from Beta Omicron traveled almost 150 miles to help our only international chapter, Delta Mu, initiate a brand new pledge class. The following week, brothers traveled again, this time almost 170 miles, heading south across state lines to Portland, Oregon. Beta Omicron was there to help cele-

Even though the game ended with a loss, brothers still enjoyed cheering on WSU. Spring semester started off with our annual Holiday Party at Banyan’s golf course. Brothers worked with PPSO to organize a great event. The night was filled with delicious food and dancing. A big thank-you goes to Brothers Brian Ross and Joe Tran for planning our annual Ski Trip at Silver Mountain Ski Resort in Kellogg, Idaho. Brothers enjoyed hitting the slopes during the day and mingling in each other’s rooms in the evening. For those brothers who didn’t enjoy the winter sports, there was an indoor water park with a lazy river, water slides, and indoor surfing. Beta Pi has begun raising money for Relay for Life with a letter-writing party. At this event each brother brings addresses of friends and family, and we send out letters for donations that will go toward the cancer research walk. Beta Pi has spent most of their energy on our largest event, which was hosting Province X 2011 in Spokane, Washington. I would like to thank Beta Pi’s Province officers,

We are very happy with how much our chapter has grown within the last few years. For fun, we incorporated rock band, s’mores & hot chocolate, and bowling into our spring recruitment. We recently held Term, our annual formal event, complete with a catered meal and dance afterward. We are also looking forward to traveling to Minneapolis for spring conclave.

This year has been exciting for the Beta Omega chapter. In the fall, we planned rush events ranging from a tailgate at Citizens Bank Park before a Phillies game to the annual back-toschool party at our house on Allegheny Avenue. These events gave potential pledges an opportunity to meet active and graduate brothers who showed their dedication to the Fraternity by attending these events. This dedication paid off, as we were able to establish a solid pledge class. We wrapped up the fall semester with
our annual spaghetti dinner night and our Christmas toy drive. Participating in the toy drive gave us a rewarding sense of service during the holidays. This spring semester, we have made significant strides in improving our house by installing new windows and planning major renovations. Many brothers are going on a trip to Panama City, Florida, for spring break. In addition, our chapter will be competing in intramural softball and dodgeball on Temple’s main campus. Another exciting spring semester event was attending a Temple University men’s basketball game with many graduate brothers who were instrumental in raising funds for our house renovations. Graduate brothers in attendance included: forSpring 2011

On January 15, we were delighted to have 25 new brothers join our ranks. In other news, Gamma Pi participated in a Polar Plunge for the St. Louis Special Olympics in February. The week leading up to the plunge consisted of an ice-covered St. Louis, two snow days, and frigid temperatures, so Lake St. Louis was extra cold. Our chapter raised more than $1,000, and about 10 brave brothers actually jumped into the water. We also participated in a brown bag event at a church in February. Gamma Rho was also heavily involved at UNM’s Legislative Day this year, working with APhA. Currently, our brothers are coordinating an inter-organization UNM College of Pharmacy team for the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk. We are well on our way to raising $5,000 by May 1. With all the fun we’ve had doing philanthropic work, we were still able to squeeze in our annual broom ball competition and shooting range get-together!

The Gamma Sigma chapter in Gainesville started the semester with a bang as we attended winter conclave hosted by the Gamma Phi chapter in Georgia. There were about 15 brothers who attended conclave. Everyone who went had a blast and enjoyed meeting all of our PIV brothers. Recently, we entered into a local kickball tournament where the proceeds will be disbursed among many charities around Gainesville. We did not win the tournament but did enjoy the time off from studying. We are excited about our newly elected officers: Alan Byard, regent; Meghan Arwood, vice regent; Patrick Cohen, treasurer; Ralph Razon, recording secretary; Bao Khoa Nguyen, corresponding secretary; Donald Hanson, historian; Matthew Sherman, chaplain; Casey Lee, sergeant at arms; Andy Hendrickson, pledgemaster; ShaneRiley Rogers and Hoang Huynh, assistant pledgemasters; and Dennis Lim, Student Council representative. Our annual Valentine’s Day Social was held on February 18 with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Heart Association. We are also busy planning our annual golf tournament. The event will be held on April 16 at Ironwood Golf Course. All proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network in Gainesville. Of course, the top golfers will get prizes. Gamma Sigma would like to invite any brothers who miss the tourney this year to plan on attending next year. The annual Multicultural Dinner was

Gamma Rho brothers volunteering at Legislative Day. And finally, what does the future have in store for the Gamma Upsilon chapter? On March 6, we will be attending the American Lung Association “Fight for Air Run/Walk.” March 18–20 brings us our next Province IX meeting, hosted by Delta Sigma, and we hope to have a strong turnout at the event. Also in March, we will be holding our 11th annual March Madness Charity Raffle. This time, the money raised will be donated to the American Lung Association. In April, we will be hosting our biannual Kappa Psi Kickball event, we will go bowling with our brothers, have a Gamma Upsilon potluck, and host our annual end of the year banquet. In addition, we will also hold another blood drive in April. —Matthew Bertsch
Gamma Phi University of Georgia Founded 5/23/1951
College of Pharmacy 1880 S. Lumpkin St., Athens, GA 30605 gammaphi@kappapsi.org
Gamma Phi kicked off the semester by hosting the Province IV conclave in Athens, Georgia, with more than 300 collegiate and graduate brothers in attendance. It was a fun weekend and great opportunity for Gamma Phi to show what Athens has to offer and for our first-year brothers to experience Kappa Psi on a Province level. Brothers Michael Brenner and Zach Lapaquette were recognized for their extensive planning to make sure conclave went smoothly. However, it was somewhat bittersweet for us at Gamma Phi, as conclave marked the
end of Brother Abe Duncan’s term as Province Satrap. Khalil Khlifi also turned over the reins as Province Webmaster, but was elected to serve as the new Province Historian. Overall, the weekend was a great success that provided countless networking opportunities. Following conclave, school got off to a rocky start with our entire first week of classes either being cancelled or delayed due to a record 9.5 inches of snow. However, once it cleared, we hosted our annual Welcome Back Party. We had a great turnout and it provided students from all over the pharmacy school a chance to relax and catch up after winter break. Each guest who attended brought a canned food item, which was later donated to a local food bank. Spring 2011
Recently, the brothers of Gamma Phi selected six first-year ladies to become our Little Sisters. We are very excited for our new additions to be a part of the chapter. To celebrate, we treated them to dinner and a night out on the town. We will be holding our second blood drive for the 2010–2011 school year. As with every blood drive, the Red Cross has set an extremely high goal, so the brothers will have to work hard in order to meet and hopefully exceed expectations. We will also be bringing back our hit “Boxers and Blazers” party this semester, where the first-year brothers put on a show in order to raise proceeds to benefit Relay for Life. This party is always a massive success and a huge turnout is expected. The brothers of Gamma Phi will be traveling to Myrtle Beach in April for our annual spring formal. We are all looking forward to a relaxing weekend as the semester winds down.
Gamma Chi Ferris State University Founded 5/6/1952 Harrison School of Pharmacy 119 S. Warren Ave., Big Rapids, MI, 49307 gammachi@kappapsi.org
It has been another exciting semester for Gamma Chi. At the end of last semester, we held our annual Christmas party to benefit WISE (Women’s Information Service Inc.) in Big Rapids. Each brother signed up to buy a gift for a child. It was a hit with more mothers and children attending than ever. Each child got a present and there were smiles to go around. We extended rush from four to six events to encourage more participation. As spring is usually a dry semester for us, we are very proud to have

During the rush period, Brothers Brian Spalding and Matt Wathen made an excellent snow fort in front of the house, and we were all very sorry to see it collapse with the thaw. Brothers Melanie Blaszak, Brian Spalding, Adam Tedeschi, and Matt Wathen participated in the Mecosta Country Polar Plunge on February 28, raising $130 to benefit Special Olympics. Brian was especially popular doing a pirouette for the crowd in a tutu before jumping in. In the house, we are using a slight surplus of money to make necessary repairs to the plumbing. Also, Brother Patrick Kujat has been doing an outstanding job of organizing the library, making it a much more accessible resource for us. In legislative matters, we recently altered our dues structure to reflect changing priorities in the chapter. The overall cost has been reduced $20 and we have added a travel fund to reimburse brothers who attend Province V events. Nearly all of our brothers have decided to attend spring assembly 2011 in Detroit, and we look forward to seeing members from other chapters there. —Melanie Blaszak

Gamma Psi Mercer University Founded 3/16/1953 School of Pharmacy, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta, GA 30341 gammapsi@kappapsi.org
It has been a wonderful yet challenging spring semester for the brothers of Gamma Psi. Collegiate brothers made the trip to Athens, Georgia, for the 2011 winter conclave. At this meeting, several Gamma Psi brothers were rewarded for their hard work by being appointed to positions within our Province. The following week the brothers traveled to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, for the annual Kappa Psi ski trip. This tremendous event included many of the other chapters in PIV. There was a lot to do in the Smoky Mountains, and many of the brothers took this opportunity to fellowship with other chapters. There was skiing, go-kart racing, and shopping to do, but in the end, it was about growing ourselves as brothers. In January, we welcomed in our newest class of pledges. In February, the brothers organized our winter blood drive. The Red Cross is experiencing a severe shortage within the Southeast, so this event was important. In the same month, two Gamma Psi brothers, Juan Lopez

This is a tremendous honor and we look forward to these brothers representing the Fraternity in Washington, D.C. Later in the month, many of the collegiate brothers will have the opportunity to have their voices heard at the annual VIP Legislative Day on the Capitol in Atlanta. We look forward to a great representation by not only Gamma Psi but also our other in-state brothers at Georgia and South. There are a number of upcoming events organized to promote service and philanthropy within our community. These include a Saturday at St. Francis Table, a local Atlanta soup kitchen; a roadside cleanup of Mercer University Drive; and a spring blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross.

It has been an action-packed semester at SWOSU College of Pharmacy! In the past months, we have attended an Oklahoma City Baron’s hockey game and two Oklahoma City Thunder basketball games. Most recently, we went to the Lakers vs. Thunder game which turned out to be a thrilling contest. This was a great way to support our state’s up-and-coming athletic programs while at the same time proudly representing our Fraternity.
We have set the date of Saturday, April 23, for our annual Kappa Psi golf tournament. Each year we raise approximately $2,000 to give to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and this year we hope to contribute even more. —Mason Morrison

We celebrated the holidays with our annual Tacky Christmas Party. Each brother brought a toy to donate to the local Toys for Tots charity. Something new Delta Gamma started this semester was pledge dinners. At these dinners the brothers were able to sit down and get to know our new pledges. We hope to continue this in the following years. Our most recent social was a White Trash Bash, where brothers dressed up as “redneck” as possible. The social was a big hit. Congratulations to Brothers
Courtney Watts and Andrew Wagner for winning the costume contest! As always, service is fundamental to the brothers of Delta Gamma. We continue to host the Boykin Birthday parties monthly, and we all come together to celebrate the birthdays of the residents of the Boykin Adult Daycare. In addition to the Boykin birthday parties, some of our brothers participated in the Love Your Heart Run, a 10K race to support a good cause. In the next few months, we also plan on going to the local elementary schools to educate children and teachers on poison prevention. —Dipti Topiwala
Delta Delta chapter proudly hosted the Province VII spring assembly, which took place February 25–27. There were more than 270 collegiate and graduate brothers in attendance at the Hotel Derek in Houston, Texas. This year’s meeting was the first Province VII assembly attended by many of the collegiate brothers present. Many new acquaintances were made and old friendships celebrated. Delta Delta would like to congratulate Brother Sue Ann Wang for doing an amazing job of coordinating this year’s assembly. Her hard work clearly paid off, and we thank the brothers of Delta Delta chapter for supporting her in every aspect of this process. Thanks also to the graduate brothers, as well as to the fundraising efforts of our neighboring Delta Theta chapter. Saturday’s lunchtime presentation was led by Brother Perry Flowers, one of the directors of pharmacy in Houston’s highly respected Memorial Hermann Hospital system, and an alumnus of Delta Delta chapter. Delta Delta chapter was proud to be named Province VII Chapter of the Year for 2010–2011. We are also congratulate the newly-elected officers of Province VII from our chapter: Ms. Jennifer Doan as Secretary, Mr. Lawrence Moore as Webmaster, and Spring 2011

Delta Zeta looks foward to a trip to Province VIII spring conclave hosted by our Epsilon brothers in April. Our Hope Lodge Dinner and Cookie Decorating in December was a wonderful experience with the patients happy to converse with us. We had a great time having our Soup and Panini supper for the Ronald McDonald House to kick off this semester. Social activities, from bowling to dinners, have been great with our newly-initiated brothers. We are looking forward to building for Habitat for Humanity, running in the Relay for Life and Ronald McDonald House 5K, and playing laser tag. P1 brothers have been trained in blood pressure screenings, so we will be able to do many more community health screenings. Brothers created informational posters on different disease states that affect men (e.g. BPH, prostate cancer, HTN, diabetes, etc.). We also performed skits and allowed the students to ask a panel of doctors, from a variety of fields, questions regarding health. With so much positive response and feedback from the seminar, we have been galvanized to host a Women’s Health Seminar in February. This semester we capitalized on new fundraising ideas, such as our first Kappa Psi Kafe. This fundraiser offers students snacks for a fee far cheaper than the snack machine in the student lounge. The fundraiser turned out to be very profitable. The Kappa Psi Love Notes is another paragon fundraiser that was launched this semester. It was geared toward Valentine’s Day, and students were given an index card for 50 cents and asked to write a short statement to a special someone. At the end of the week, we collected these cards and printed the student’s statement on a Valentine’s Day type background. We enlarged these documents and displayed them around the school. January meant the start of Spring Rush. Rush Chair Alex LeMere and her committee did a great job in putting together two rush events. The first one was the “Blizzard Blast” where we had hot chocolate and wintery desserts to go along with the chilly weather outside. The brothers and the rushees did a scavenger hunt, finding out interesting tidbits about one another. There were three rushees who joined the festivities and who were excited to get to know more about Kappa Psi. Our second rush event was the “Throwdown: Battle Buffalo” at Cooley’s Too where rushees and brothers enjoyed wings. There was even an all-you-can wings contest which provided some great entertainment. Bids were given out a couple of days later. Thanks to Dr. Katz, who helped coordinate the Fannin History Festival where brothers shared the pharmacy profession with middle school students. Brothers promoted health and preventative care Spring 2011
while working with Market Street in hosting a “Healthy New Expo.” With Dr. Allison Walker as our preceptor, brothers offered free diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol preventative screenings to patients. Delta Pi was also excited to hear that Brothers Detty John and Kevin Aloysius received a $2,000 grant from Walgreens to fund the Annual International Night and implement events that are devoted to promote diversity at our school. Hosting “Intro to Medical Spanish Lecture” for pharmacy students was the first step. The session was packed with 85 P1s and P2s and thanks to Dr. Niambi Horton, students learned basic Spanish muy rápido. To better the student lounge, Brother David Zhang led a project to replace the school piano through donations from our faculty. We plan to hold a recital to thank the generous donors. Thanks to Brother Brien Gale for writing our chapter’s song. We also remember several fun times together. Hosting a pharmacy schoolwide movie night and football events were memorable moments. We plan to kick off the first schoolwide talent show competition in combination with the International Night. We celebrated our Founders Day with faculty and staff by holding a bake-off. Brother Kirsten Anderson won the best dessert with a Twix cheesecake, and Brothers Disney Rachel-Philip and Sheba Jacob won the most creative dessert—spaghetti and meatball cake. We are setting up a new Web site that can better organize and plan our upcoming events. After returning from conclave, we celebrated the initiation of 28 brothers, beating out last year’s record for the largest pledge class inducted! We ended the month of January by competing in NSU’s third annual College of Pharmacy Field Day. First, second- and third-year pharmacy students battled for the winning trophy in games of flag football, kickball, relay race, and tug-of-war. It was a fun-filled day of barbecue and friendly competition. Delta Rho also participated in the fourth annual NSU Community Fest, a daylong event our school hosts for the whole community. We organized a cardiovascular health-awareness booth to educate adults and kids on how to keep their hearts healthy. Delta Rho has officially kicked off the planning and organizing process for our third annual Dance Marathon to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. This is the biggest event our chapter organizes. The 12-hour event will include hip-hop, country line, salsa, and Bollywood dance lessons, games, prizes, raffles, and more food than you can imagine. Our goal is to top last year’s efforts of more than $7,000. We look forward to the new officer elections and a relaxing spring break. Brothers are also eagerly anticipating Greek Wars, an all-day sports competition among the three pharmaceutical fraternities at NSU. During the remainder of the semester, we will continue our monthly disease awareness programs with Cancer and STD Prevention Awareness, and celebrate the end of another fun-filled school year at the annual Masquerade Ball. —Ally Courson

ed to welcome 36 new brothers into our chapter. Afterward, we had a great time celebrating our growing chapter at a local restaurant. Delta Tau also participated in a philanthropic event, the annual Read and Run for Your Heath, hosted by the Henderson Libraries. The event included a 5K and one-mile run/walk where our brothers bundled up to help staffers remove timing tags from participants during the early morning hours. We also set up a booth to help generate awareness about asthma at the Read and Run event. With the support of our newly appointed GCD, Dr. Alana Whittaker, we enjoyed the opportunity to counsel patients and provide families with informative brochures. At the start of spring semester, Delta Upsilon initiated 13 new broth-
ers and attended Province IV conclave in Athens, Georgia. We would like to extend a warm thank-you for a taste of the Southern hospitality we experienced by the brothers of Gamma Phi. Brothers participated in our school’s annual Martin Luther King Challenge this January. We had the honor of going to the Lourdes
Mckeen Assisted Living Facility and hosting a party for the residents. Additionally, the brothers are participating in community service events such as Feeding the Homeless and the Crohn’s & Colitis Walk. Our community service chair, Brother Deanna Boone, and her committee have been working very hard to find activities where we can make an impact. We’re pleased to report that Delta Upsilon has adopted a highway! Our chapter will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of Quadrille Boulevard between Okeechobee Road and Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach, Florida for the next two years. Our Fundraising Committee is currently focused on fundraising for our annual golf tournament and Grad Dinner. Monies collected will benefit Kappa Psi and brothers participating in mission trips over the summer to locations such as Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. Our chapter would like to congratulate Brother Jennifer Johnson on being awarded the Asklepios Key and her acceptance into the National Association of Professional Women. Congratulations to Brothers Alex DeJong and Halena Sautman for being awarded the Collin’s Award. —Lashawn Morton Spring 2011
To celebrate the pinning of the new pledges, Delta Phi active brothers put together a casino themed party, complete with great food, card games, and even a roulette game. The photo station was in demand because brothers wanted to take pictures with new members in their family. The second event of the quarter was the Interview Party, a great opportunity for brothers to get to know their Littles. In the first activity, a divider was placed between a brother and a pledge, and then it was quickly removed to reveal the identity of the other person. The highlight of the night was the catapult creation activity, where each team had to construct a catapult out of pieces of tape, wood, and a cup. The winning team was the one that could shoot a Ping-Pong ball farthest across the room. At the Speed Pledge event, pledges had the opportunity to meet and chat with the fourth-year brothers. Upwards of 30 stations were set up, each manned by a different active brother, and each with a unique activity. There was singing, dancing, word games, board games, embarrassing questions, and even taste tests. The pledges rotated from station to station and had a great time with brothers. Following the Speed Pledge, the pledge class came together and threw a party to honor the active brothers. The pledge party had a Chinese New Year theme, and was filled with activities, food, and a pair of candy filled Chinese New Year Piñatas. The first philanthropy event of the quarter involved cleaning up the San Diego River. Philanthropy chair Natasha Gorely, secretary Samantha Chang, former social chair Traci Bricker, and several others joined the San Diego River Park Foundation and I Love a Clean San Diego to remove trash and debris from around the river. Later in the quarter, Delta Phi organized an Asthma Outreach event at the local Boys and Girls Club. Thanks again to Natasha Gorely for her hard work setting up philanthropy events. Keep an eye out for the Annual Kappa Psi Battle of the Bands during the spring quarter. Delta Phi has also been very active with fundraising events to help fund the upcoming GCC in San Francisco. This winter break, Delta Psi brothers had a great time up in northern Minnesota at the Lutsen Ski Resort. Brothers sure know how to get down and boogie in Lutsen, as there was a lot of Wii Dance, Dance going on this year. In addition to dancing, skiing, and hot tubing, just plain good times were had by all. Delta Psi currently has seven pledges for the spring semester. This semester Delta Psi has two intramural teams: curling and bowling. Both teams are going strong, and despite the outcome, all is in good fun. The first philanthropy project is making visits to a local assisted living residential home. Brothers have the opportunity to chat with residents as well as play games. Another project we have been busy working on is STI talks. Delta Psi brothers plan to talk with high school students about safe sex and preventing sexually transmitted diseases. This year the Delta Psi chapter took over the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy Relay for Life team. The team has been hard at work fundraising throughout the college in preparation for the relay walk on April 15. In addition, Kappa Psi has

Delta Omega started off the new year by extending our open hands to 17 new brothers. During their pledge process, they completed various projects that benefited our university and community such as the River Walk Cleanup and Relay for Life. We are very proud of all they have accomplished and look forward to seeing how they shape the chapter’s future. Our main focus this year is searching for new ways to improve our chapter through philanthropic and chapter development projects. We feel that through these projects we can develop a good reputation for our chapter not only in the School of Pharmacy but also in our community. In philanthropy, we provided health and wellness services at health screenings with the American Diabetes Association and the Black Heritage Festival. At the Annual Chatham County Mutt Strut, Delta Omega raised more than $400 to benefit our local humane society by hosting an on-campus Chili Cook-Off. For the Day of Dignity, our brothers provided soup and served the homeless at Forsyth Park.

On January 24, the brothers organized our famous Scavenger Hunt for the pledges. This was a great way for the pledges to not only explore the heart of San Antonio, but to get to know each other as well. The best part of pledgeship is the Big/Little Reveal, which took place on February 16. During lunchtime, the pledges were lined up in the hallway eagerly holding a picture of one half of an iconic pair, a clue that would eventually link them to their Big Brothers. Once inside the room, the pledges searched for their Big Brother who was also holding the other half of the pair. Lots of gifts were given and lots of pictures were taken. In addition to pledging, Epsilon Beta chapter continued to do what we do best — community service and pro-
fessional relations. On February 18, Professional Relations Committee chair Brother Rishma Patel organized a Poison Prevention program at a local elementary school. Brothers talked to first- and second-graders about ways to identify poisons and passed out stickers and coloring books. The students had fun and the teachers were extremely grateful. We will have another Poison Prevention program in April. Community service chair Brother Lyssa Villanueva also signed us up for several events. Brothers volunteered their time at the Goodwill Store. They toured the facility, hung up clothes, and helped price items. Brothers and pledges volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, where, despite the rainy weather, everyone had fun working as a team to landscape a home in record time. Our chapter will also be presenting additional Generation Rx presentations at various sites throughout our area this spring in association with our campus’s APhA and FSHP chapters. Later in the spring, we will be teaming up with a local community outreach center and Walgreens to participate in our chapter’s first brown bag event in support of Kappa Psi’s National Health Literacy Campaign. It is a tremendous honor to work side by side with these individuals to help improve the health of our community while building lifelong relationships. Also, later in the spring, we will be kicking off our first annual Greek Week with our sister fraternity, the Kappa Epsilon, Beta Iota colony. This week will include a philanthropy event, karaoke, and toga night social and will end with a fun and friendly sporting event. Just a few of the things we have been focused on in recent weeks are: starting up a Web site (complete with a PayPal button to make it easier for our brothers to pay dues), organizing fundraising events, fine tuning our constitution as problems arise, and reaching out to graduate brothers in the Orlando area. While there is much to do, our main focus the last few months has been on pledging. We have spent many meetings since our chartering discussing and organizing our rushing and pledging process. We recently gave bids for our first pledge class. Transitioning from Founding Brothers to pledging others has not been without difficulty, but as with all things Kappa Psi, we have had many helping hands. Brothers from chapters across the Province have dedicated time and effort to make sure our pledge program is as strong as it can be. Special thanks go out to the regents of Gamma Psi and Delta Upsilon for their continued advice. The chapter had a fantastic time at the Province IV winter conclave in Athens, Georgia. It was a great opportunity for us to meet our new brothers and begin our involvement in Province duties. We also had our first annual EM Fantasy Football Tournament, with the trophy going to Joel Peterson. It was neck and neck between Joel and Jeremy Lund until the very end when Joel came out on top thanks to Pittsburgh’s defense on week 16. The beginnings of a new chapter, Epsilon Xi, emerged on February 5, 2011. Starting in the fall of 2010, 33 optimistic pharmacy students dished their hearts out to become brothers of the largest pharmaceutical fraternity in the world. During this time, the pledges were able to build bonds and prove their desire to become lifelong members through a number of activities and events. Just four months later, the Fraternity was brought to life at Pacific University, Oregon. Already, we have established our own unique T-shirts, paddles, and a slide show to represent our chapter. Our attendance and participation at the Province X meeting in Spokane, Washington, was the first time we, Epsilon Xi, presented ourselves as the wonderful chapter we have become. The Mu Omicron Pi chapterhas been busy putting the last touches on the upcoming spring assembly meeting. Here’s a recap of our recent activities. Despite our small numbers, we have been busy taking active roles in our community. We were involved in a diabetes clinic where trained volunteers have been serving the community by providing free diabetes and cholesterol screenings. Other volunteer activities include organizing exercise and nutrition regimens/presentations to the residents of COTS (Coalition of Temporary Shelter). COTS is a homeless shelter for transient people who are down on their luck and have lost everything and need some relief. COTS provide them an area to live in while trying to get back on their feet. Upon their request, they have asked pharmacy students to organize daily nutrition and exercise regimens and advice to improve their daily living. This is a collaborative effort with students and faculty from the Physical Therapy and Nutritionist program. The event will kick off in April. Mu Omicron Pi brothers have also been taking an active role in organizing undergrad students to participate in Wayne State University’s annual FAWN program. This program provides nutritional meal replacements such as Ensure to people in Africa in order for their medication therapy to be more effective. Last but not least, our chapter has been actively involved in an organization called “World Medical Relief.” This amazing organization collects medications and distributes them to
underdeveloped countries where access to drugs is very limited. They also provide services and health relief to those in the local community who cannot afford health care to manage conditions. And no surprise at all, the pharmacist in charge of WMR is, of course, a KAPPA PSI BROTHER!

In the brief time Gamma Delta has been back up and running, Ada Grad has been thrilled with the progress they have made and the enthusiasm they have shown in wanting to get involved with the alumni through various activities. We are looking forward to the upcoming Founders Day celebration and spending more time with our Gamma Delta brothers.

The Boston Graduate chapter has had very successful winter months. We have continued our several philanthropy and community service events throughout the winter and are right on track in meeting our goals. In help-
ing Mu chapter strive for success, we have a positive impact on the community surrounding MCPHS. By working hard and gaining donations from brothers and community members, we are striving to make our largest contributions to the March of Dimes and Relay for Life. We have had very strong showings at both of these events in the past and hope to have a good turnout again. We will also be taking part in the April Mission Hill cleanup along with the Mu chapter. Although it can be hard to keep in touch after graduating, we have made strides in keeping all of the graduates involved. In helping Mu chapter during pledge period this year, we had a strong showing from several grad brothers. We had brothers travel back to Boston from Florida, California, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Maine in order to show new brothers the love we all have for Kappa Psi and the lasting bonds that can be formed far beyond college. We’re off to a great start in 2011 and as summer approaches, we are extremely excited about the accomplishments Buffalo Grad has had so far. On the heels of our annual dues mailing, we have hosted our annual Continuing Education Seminar (three live credits on Medication Errors), courtesy of Brother Professor Karl Fiebelkorn from SUNY Buffalo. Many of the Grad brothers have also spent time traveling to Province meetings in Detroit, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh. We’re getting excited for GCC with what may amount to one of the largest Buffalo Grad contingents to a GCC meeting in some time. Most importantly, we’re proud to be involved with the creation of a new Kappa Psi chapter at D’Youville College, located on the west side of the city of Buffalo. Many thanks to Brothers Michelle Lewis, Jessica Campbell, and Stephanie Brian, along with countless others in Buffalo Grad and Gamma Iota, who are helping with this endeavor. Our hope is that by the summer edition of THE MASK, the chartering will be complete! Greetings! D.C. Grad continues to support and mentor the Delta Kappa chapter. During the fall, we awarded our first Book Scholarship to a Delta Kappa brother, Christyn Mullen. We plan to award this annually with hopes of offering multiple scholarships. In January, our regent, Dr. Angela R. Appling, attended the chartering ceremony for our newest PIII chapter, Epsilon Nu at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. We, along with Delta Kappa, presented the new chapter a congratulatory plaque. D.C. Grad brothers also attended the PIII meeting in Baltimore hosted by the Sigma chapter. During a Super Bowl Social at Brother Clifford Lovett’s home, we had our installation of new officers and Delta Kappa brothers shared in the festivities. We also welcomed six new brothers to D.C. Grad. During February, we supported the Heart to Heart Ball presented by Kappa Psi and Kappa Epsilon at Howard University. The funds raised at this annual event support the “Go

A great time was had by all at this year’s annual Province VII conclave in Houston February 24–27, 2011. Delta Delta was the host chapter for the weekend and did a great job organizing the meeting. Friday night’s opening meeting gave attendees a chance to start making connections with brothers from other chapters. Several chapters’ members wore jerseys with nicknames on the back leading to curiosity about the
stories behind the nicknames. The evening ended with a poolside social. On Saturday, Grand Counselor Eric Gupta gave a bylaw writing workshop that was both relevant and educational. Graduate Member-at-Large Latha Radhakrishnan gave a graduate transition presentation that offered information pertaining to member participation in Kappa Psi after graduation. A risk-management workshop was presented by Assistant Supervisor Robert Mancini. Dr. Mancini’s presentation was a reminder to all brothers about appropriate behavior with a few entertaining pictures to illustrate the importance of the Kappa Psi picture policy. Standing committees and several special committees met to discuss ideas, projects and goals for next year. It was decided that each chapter would aim to distribute three flyers per semester with information about specific disease states and also to have patients complete a feedback survey regarding the effectiveness of the information. At recent meetings, we have been privileged to see some highly entertaining skits and to enjoy rearranged songs sung/rapped by some of our more talented brothers. —Christine Cooper Brother Allison Lau presenting a gift on behalf of the Delta Delta chapter to their GCD, Dr. Louis Williams, to show their appreciation for his dedication to the Fraternity and the chapter. work and also to Dr. Mancini and Dr. Radhakrishnan, as this was their last meeting as Province VII Supervisors. Since voting for our philanthropic efforts to focus on asthma awareness for the year, Province IX has been busy putting together events. Each time we get together, every chapter shares their great ideas for enhancing awareness and innovative ways to get information out to our patients. The

The bonds of brotherhood lent warmth to a frigid February weekend as the Beta Pi chapter hosted the Province X winter 2011 conclave meeting in Spokane, Washington. Grand Vice Regent Kali Weaver, Grand Counselor Eric Gupta, Graduate Member-at- Large Latha Radhakrishnan, and brothers from Epsilon Gamma chapter in Province IX were also there to show support. Additionally, we had the honor of welcoming Brother Sid Nelson, GCD to Beta Omicron; Brother Travis Sonnett, GCD to Beta Pi; Brother Elaine Moy of Illinois Graduate; and Brother Steve Weaver of Auburn Graduate. With more than 100 brothers in attendance, it was one of the biggest Province X conclaves in recent history. This was also the first to feature a CE program for graduate brothers, which was offered by Brother Keith Campbell, and an educational grant from Novo Nordisk. Saturday and Sunday morning, conclave was a whirlwind of discussion, introspection, and productivity. Province X Supervisor Marvin Smith led chapter building workshops, with the theme “My Kappa Psi,” which were designed to strengthen our collegiate chapters, increase graduate retention rates, and improve the collegiate pledging process. The Legislative Committee successfully created the new Province officer position of Webmaster to help organize and promote Province X activities through a Province Web site. The chapter delegates also voted to modify our Province’s bylaws to change the Province hosting chapter rotation cycle so that conclaves were not held in the same state twice in a row. Also, we elected and initiated our new officers: Janice Louie–Satrap, Ciprian Pascu–Vice Satrap, Shane Johnson– Secretary-Treasurer, Johnny Wong– Chaplain, Dennis Tran–Historian, Alex Pfeiffer–Webmaster, Chad Seely– GCC Delegate, and Sherry Whitley– Alternate GCC Delegate.

This is an exciting time in Kappa Psi. Our 55th Grand Council Convention is quickly approaching and we will be converging on San Francisco in a matter of months. For those of you who have not been to GCC, it is an amazing time that will change your life. It is the meeting of all Kappa Psi meetings where the Constitution and Bylaws can be changed and policy can be written. GCC is also where the Executive Committee dissolves and every chapter has an equal voice. Your first GCC can seem overwhelming at times. There are people there whom you have only read about like Brother Dewey Garner or Brother Norm Campbell. You’ll see chapters that bring every brother with them to GCC while you may be the only person from your chapter. Some brothers seem to know everyone and have no problem standing in front of the entire assembly and speaking their mind. We have all been there. We have all been the brother in the room who didn’t really know anyone. We have all second-guessed ourselves before approaching the microphone because we didn’t want to sound like a fool in front of everyone. My advice to you is to meet as many brothers as possible. As you talk to your brothers, you will learn that while we may all be different on the surface, we are all Kappa Psi at the core. I also encourage you to speak up during the convention. Let your opinions be known! You will never be thought a fool as long as you’re speaking from the heart and with the Fraternity’s best interest in mind. The theme of this year’s Grand Council Convention is “This is my Kappa Psi.” This theme was chosen as a reminder to all brothers that this Fraternity does not belong to a few but rather to all of us. We are all responsible for the future of our Fraternity. Come to GCC, make your voice heard, and remember this is YOUR Kappa Psi.
Conclave was not all about business. Brothers were treated to a few rounds of laser tag and an air hockey tournament at the local Laser Quest. We also spent some time forging new bonds on dance floors of Spokane’s best-known night life spots. We wrapped up the weekend with an awards banquet at Luigi’s restaurant in downtown Spokane. Gamma Eta was also presented with the Travelers’ Award for having the most brothers travel the longest distance to attend conclave. We strengthened our bonds at the Province level with Beta Omicron and Beta Pi joining the brothers of Delta Spring 2011
Mu to help initiate new brothers in Vancouver, British Columbia. The brothers of Beta Omicron and Satrap Chad Seely also showed support to our Province’s newest chapter, Epsilon Xi, during its chartering at Pacific University in February. We hope to strengthen bonds between all the chapters of Province X with more cross-chapter activities outside of conclave. We would like to thank Satrap Janice Louie and the brothers of Beta Pi for coordinating this year’s conclave and social activities. —Dennis Tran
