SUMMER 2010

The First Word

Greetings from the Heartland Summertime, for some of us, is a time to relax from the rigors of college and for others, to take time from work. It was also the time for your Executive Committee to hold its interim meeting— this August in San Francisco at the Parc 55, the site of the upcoming 55th Grand Council Convention, scheduled for August 2–6, 2011. The meeting was very productive and plans for the GCC are progressing nicely. Summer is also a time for The Central Office to get caught up on items that were shelved to be finished later. Among these are the updating of our database and the online access for filling out the M-cards and the possibility of redesigning our national Web page. The online M-cards will be ready when classes resume this fall. Some of you have or will be contacted by Harris Connect concerning the 2010 edition of The Agora, our national directory. Please answer their request as we would like to have this edition E. Ben Welch, B.S., R.Ph., PharmD., as accurate and complete as possible. I thank you in advance for Grand Regent your assistance. Now, the bad news…we had to increase the jewelry prices due to the increase in the cost of gold. These increases are now up to date on the national Web page in the Kappa Psi Shop. And finally, The Central Office received several inquiries about a 75-year membership certificate. As a result of these requests, we now have the F. Harvey Smith, Order of the Platinum Mortar, for those brothers who have been members for 75 years or more. Proud and humble to be your Grand Regent,

E. Ben Welch, B.S., R.Ph., Pharm.D.

“The Executive Council held the interim meeting at the Parc 55, the site of the upcoming 55th GCC. The site is beautiful and there’s a lot to do and see in San Francisco. Plan to join us August 2–6, 2011! —E. Ben Welch

On the Cover The brothers of Delta Rho are set to tackle whatever obstacles stand in their way this academic year. From left to right: Brothers Tejal Patel, Veronica Zolotushkina, Julianna Crain, Tori Rodgers, Binal Patel, Alicia Bernstein, and Mariel Brown.

Recently, I attended the Fraternity Communications Association (FCA) meeting in New Orleans and was inspired by one of our sessions. The topic was “Start with the Why.” This intrigued me to start looking at Kappa Psi and ask myself “Why Kappa Psi?” I could give you the easy answer of “I wanted to become involved with an organization that was in my profession and could help me with my academics and perhaps find a job later in life.” Perhaps at first that was the case, but now as I think about the “why,” it can be answered with “Kappa Psi is a strong and diverse Brotherhood that could offer me life experiences that I can carry with me for a lifetime.” Kappa Psi has afforded me opportunities for leadership on all levels of the Fraternity, but it also gave me the skills to branch outside of the Fraternity and take on roles within other organizations, whether they are in the profession of pharmacy or outside of it. These life skills that I have been able to develop through Kappa Psi have been invaluable and can all be traced to my early days within the Fraternity. I would like to see all brothers and chapters examine within themselves their own “Why Kappa Psi?” You might be surprised by what you find out. As this issue of THE MASK is arriving on campus, each chapter should also take the time to challenge themselves to find out “Why Kappa Psi” is better than joining one of our rival fraternities. If we start looking at the “Why” first, then the “How” and “What” should start to take care of themselves. My assessment of “Why Kappa Psi” can be summarized as such: Kappa Psi has been building better pharmacists in the past, present, and into the future. Come join our Brotherhood. Fraternally,

Cameron Van Dyke Editor of THE MASK Summer 2010

He is running to raising money for the Lance Armstrong LIVESTRONG Foundation. On his reasons for running in the NYC Marathon, Sanchez stated, “Throughout my years of being a pharmacist and dealing directly with cancer patients, I have seen patients from all walks of life. When diagnosed with cancer, a patient’s life is quickly turned upside down. Being on the frontline in the fight against cancer is at times difficult and exhausting; however, it can be very rewarding when patients go on to full recovery.” If you would like to sponsor Brother Sanchez’s efforts, you can go to: http://fundraising.livestrong.org/teamls2010/ernestsanchez.

The 2010 American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting and Exposition was held March 12–15 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The Kappa Psi booth was packed throughout the weekend. It was easily the busiest booth in the building. Executive Committee members were busy passing out Kappa Psi ribbons, stickers, and crest pins. Without a doubt, the Kappa Psi display was one of the busiest at the convention. The official Kappa Psi reception was held on Saturday, March 13, at the Grand Hyatt. At the reception, brothers enjoyed spending time with those they have not seen in some time and sampling the appetizer spread. Grand Regent E. Ben Welch introduced all the dignitaries in the audience. Grand Regent Welch spoke about brotherhood and raffled off an enlarged print of the recent MASK cover. Executive Director Porter continued where Grand Regent Welch left off by giving a “State of the Fraternity” address, which was very appropriate for our setting in the nation’s capital. After Brother Porter’s address, Past Grand Regent John Grossomanides presented several Kappa Psi Foundation awards. The winners were:

Sigma Honored Brothers, On behalf of the Public Relations Committee, it is my pleasure to announce that Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, for the third year in a row, has been recognized by the Professional Fraternity Association (PFA). The 2010 Professional Fraternity Association (PFA) Award for Outstanding Community Service has been awarded to the brothers of the Sigma chapter at the University of Maryland-Baltimore. The Outstanding Community Service Award recognizes a group chapter that has dedicated personal and financial support for the betterment of that chapter’s community. The Sigma chapter is committed to serving their community. They actively participate in numerous fundraising and community service projects throughout the academic year, including the Step Out for Diabetes Walk and the Diabetes Fall Fest at a local middle school. They have partnered with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the American Cancer Society. They have done projects with the Maryland Poison Center and the Greenbaum Cancer Center. Most notably, the chapter organized a schoolwide Haiti Relief Fundraiser to contribute to the relief efforts by Unicef for earthquake victims. The Public Relations Committee would like to thank all the brothers who identified and/or nominated brothers for the PFA awards. —Tammy Espinoza, Chairperson, Public Relations Committee

continued our commitment to kidney health by conducting KEEP and CHERISH screenings throughout the spring semester. Keeping with tradition, the chapter gave more than $1,000 to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Many brothers also walked the six-plus mile route along the Mississippi for the good cause. And speaking of travelling for a good cause, this summer Epsilon brothers again drove far and wide to educate high schoolers about STIs. We’re especially excited about this summer because Target Field has finally arrived! Epsilon brothers staffing the refreshment booths make outdoor baseball even sweeter because it raises money for Kappa Psi. Many brothers travelled south for spring break to Washington, D.C., for the annual APhA meeting and the notto-be-missed Kappa Psi reception. We also made sure to pack plenty of smiles for a fun and productive conclave in Omaha, where the theme was “Brothers for Life.” We were thrilled to bring home the Golden Peanut Award for most entertaining and informative Chapter Report. As always, initiations were among the social highlights of the semester. Congratulations to the 2010 spring pledge class. Epsilon brothers also mingled with graduate brothers and gave out chapter awards at our spring dinner meeting, held at Cork’s/ Woolley’s in St. Paul.

Summer 2010

We continued our tradition of donating a year-long dessert of the month service to the College of Pharmacy’s annual auction fundraiser. At the same auction, the chapter walked away with the promise of a refreshing pool party, courtesy of our College of Pharmacy’s dean. Epsilon brothers had a blast at our annual Breezy Point retreat. We met with the brothers of Delta Psi for a fruitful weekend of lawn games, grilling, golfing, and (in accordance with tradition) throwing some of our favorite brothers into the lake. The great work of faculty brothers has not gone unacknowledged. The University of Minnesota awarded our Immediate Past GCD, Dr. Rory Remmel, the 2010 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Postbaccalaureate, Graduate and Professional Education. This high honor also means that Brother Remmel will join Brothers Uden and Brundage in the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. Epsilon brothers plan on participating in an uptown cleanup fundraiser and volunteering at Camp SuperKids, a summer experience for children with persistent asthma. Summer is also a time of transition, as we say goodbye to our graduating P4s. Congratulations, brothers; we hope to make you just as proud as you’ve made us. —Ying Feng

As we enjoyed burgers and hotdogs, a game or two of cornhole, and the occasional lap in the pool, we reminisced about all the things our chapter had accomplished this year. Xi chapter proudly continues its philanthropic efforts at the Unverferth House, Capital Area Humane Society, and Crawl for Cancer. But this spring, the chapter is pleased to take part in a new project, the Worldwide Book Drive, headed up by fellow Brothers Becky MacAleese and Gilianne Narcisse. Rho chapter had an extremely busy spring semester. Several members made the long journey from Lawrence to New Orleans in February for Province VII conclave. They came back with several great ideas to incorporate into our chapter for the upcoming school year. Also in February, Rho chapter held its first annual Mr. Pharmacy Pageant Fundraiser. A few professors donated their time to be judges for the competition. We’re hoping that in the coming years, the pageant will continue to grow in size and popularity. In April, the chapter held its annual golf tournament to raise money for a community health center in Lawrence. We had a great turnout of enthusiastic golfers, and several prizes were awarded for the longest drive, longest putt, and closest to the pin. Later in April, Rho chapter hosted the annual KU Pharmacy School Formal at 23rd Street Brewery. Everyone looked great and had a fantastic time dancing the night away! In May we said farewell to the P5 members with a barbecue to show our appreciation for everything they did for the chapter. We wish them luck on their upcoming year of rotations for their final year of pharmacy school. Rho chapter has an on-campus bone marrow registration already in the works for this fall. We have a lot of great ideas stirring for the upcoming

After starting off the year under 36 inches of snow, Sigma trumped the weather, the stress of exams and projects, back-to-back meetings, and a full calendar to end the year with a bang! On April 21, thanks to all the hard work of the fall 2009 pledge class, Sigma held its fourth annual Rx Spelling Bee. Brothers Larren Collins and Lena Zhou oversaw the event from the beginning to create a funfilled and competitive atmosphere. This year, the money raised was donated to UNICEF to aid recovery efforts in Haiti. The competition was intense with more than 30 participants representing different schools and all

As the competition progressed, many stumbled over tricky drug spellings such as ‘carbinoxamine’ and ‘fosfomycin,’ but one contestant rose above the rest to claim first place. Brother Josephine Feng, a secondyear brother and first-time contestant, showed everyone that spelling is definitely a gift. The event was a huge success, raising $800 for UNICEF. Way to go everyone—study up for next year! Brothers Cathy Chang and Anh Tran, along with the Professional Committee, worked tirelessly on the sophisticated black and white themed gala. Hats off to newly graduated Brothers Yara Haddad, Shirley Lee, Sophia Park, Sheel Shah, Kim Wu, and Connie Yoon Gough for receiving the F. Harvey Smith Grand Regent’s Letter of Recognition, as well as Brothers Brian Ellsworth and Andy Trinh for receiving the W. Bruce Philip Certificate of Commendation. All of your hard work and dedication to our chapter and our Fraternity will not be forgotten. The night was exciting and truly one for the record books. For one last push of service this spring, Sigma held its annual campuswide Wing-A-Thon to benefit the Greenebaum Cancer Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Students from all schools competed in the belly-busting challenge to eat as many wings as possible in 30 minutes. With more than 2,000 chicken wings donated by Camden Pub, spectators watched as participants raced to inhale the wings as fast as possible. Leaving the table completely stuffed, the five-person team “2 Fast 2 Fail” set a new event record of 200 wings. However, accolades must also be given to “Wings of Glory” for the largest team sponsorship. By lending their stomachs to charity, all of the teams helped to raise a donation of more than $2,000. At Sigma, this year has been exciting and exhausting, but most of all a lesson in what defines true brotherhood! A huge THANKS to the 2009–2010 executive board and committee chairs. Without your hard work and dedication, Sigma wouldn’t be the same!

Chi Centennial The 100th anniversary of Chi chapter was held this past April in the Windy City. The past couple of years, the Chi chapter has been focusing their efforts to host the Province V assembly in collaboration with the Centennial Celebration. It has taken years of fundraising to put together an event that will be remembered for the next 100 years to come. In addition to the Chi chapter’s planning and coordination, the Illinois Graduate chapter also had the pleasure of assisting in hosting the event. Since we have been reactivated from our dormant state about five years ago, we have been busy improving our chapter to help guide our future graduate brothers. Many of our brothers have been through planning and hosting an assembly and their input was greatly appreciated. Many of our brothers traveled from across the country to attend this Grand Vice Regent Kali Weaver, Grand Historian Michael Cournoyer, and Centennial event. It has been an exciting and very busy spring semester for Chi chapter, and we were honored to host the Province V spring assembly. Much effort, organizing, and savings were put into that successful, enjoyable event. Having never attended a Province meeting before, I personally enjoyed seeing so many Kappa Psi brothers gather together for the same purpose, which is serving our Fraternity. The meeting has also seen the election of our P4 brother, Joe Nguyen, as the Province V Secretary. Our Chi chapter received the Most Improved Award for Philanthropy, which came as a gift for our chapter and our hardworking professional chair, Chintan Patel, P4. Before the end of the semester, Chi chapter elected the new 2010–2011 e-board, which I am very pleased to serve on as the alumni chair. Finally, the semester concluded with the graduation of 31 Chi brothers in the Pharm.D. class of 2010. They started another journey into the profession of pharmacy, carrying with them experiences they will never forget and friendships through Kappa Psi that will last forever.

Beta Epsilon is proud of its elected officials and looks forward to a successful school year. This past March, the chapter successfully hosted our annual charity date auction. This event is always a lot of fun—not only for the brothers involved, but also the entire URI community. With all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society, the large turnout helped us raise a lot of money for a good cause. Toward the end of the spring, Beta Epsilon participated in the University of Rhode Island’s Relay for Life, where we were once again recognized as one of the top fundraising groups on campus. Kappa Psi also held its annual spring formal with the pharmaceutical sorority Lambda Kappa Sigma, where a great time was had by both organizations. In addition, Beta Epsilon held its yearly Brothers versus Graduates softball game, where many current brothers got the opportunity to catch up with a number of graduate brothers. We look forward to the upcoming school year and are in the process of

With additional donations from brothers, we raised enough money to exceed our goal of $2,000! The Beta Etas in attendance at the Memory Walk were great

Several newly initiated brothers organized a beach themed outing for the annual Pledge Class Party. Falling right before spring break, it was a great way to unwind for the well deserved week off and cheer on the WVU basketball team in the NCAA playoffs. Spring was also a time for fraternizing with our Kappa Psi neighbors up north. Province II was held at the University of Pittsburgh, and we sent our Province Vice Satrap to represent our chapter at the event. As a farewell and good luck sendoff to the third-year brothers, we found our way back to Pittsburgh a few weeks later for celebrations at Station Square. While brothers of Beta Kappa are relieved to have another year of pharmacy school behind them, the end of spring semester was complete with a packed lineup of fun, and friendship. To begin, brothers held a lunch lecture on the topic of Alzheimer’s disease, open to both students and faculty. Lunch consisted of meatball subs and home baked treats, and all were encouraged to bring canned foods or monetary donations to benefit the Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. We are very grateful to our speaker, William Klunk, M.D., Ph.D., the father of Beta Kappa’s own Jess Klunk, for providing us with an interesting and informational lecture. We all took with us a greater appreciation for the remarkable strides that researchers have taken to fight this devastating disease. To further benefit the Pittsburgh Community Food

Bank, Beta Kappa also held its annual Pirates game fundraiser. Even though Mother Nature brought about wet seats and a rain delay, students still enjoyed friends, fun, and baseball. Along with these events, brothers continued to volunteer at Family House, perform blood pressure screenings at Rite Aid, and represent Beta Kappa as a part of the School of Pharmacy’s Relay for Life team. The end of the spring semester also brought about the annual Kappa Psi vs. LKS powderpuff football game. We were glad to see the overwhelming support from the brothers and are very proud of our girls for pulling off what Beta Kappa would deem a victory for the chapter. We are also pleased to announce that Province II proved to be a great success. Congratulations to Dana Roman who was elected Vice Satrap and Chris Turton who was elected Treasurer. We are very thankful to all brothers who came to represent their chapter in the great city of Pittsburgh, and we look forward to another successful Province when Delta Omicron hosts in the fall. Once again, brothers were able to enjoy a night of great food and great company at the annual spring formal. This was one of the last opportunities for brothers to enjoy a weekend of fun with finals week just around the corner. The spring semester concluded with the always bittersweet P4 night. As we celebrated the accomplishments of our graduating brothers, we were sad to see them leave but wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. The Beta Lambda chapter has made leaps and bounds over the past year and is continuing to set high standards for its members. Positive strides include considerably larger pledge classes, increased philanthropy among actives, and coordinated social events with other chapters in the region. This past fall semester, there were 14 successfully recruited brothers. Out of such a quality group, many Summer 2010

decided to pursue officer positions during the spring, including our current regent, Kyle Hake. Also during this time, several Beta Lambda brothers ran the Race for the Cure, an excellent 5K race centered on breast cancer survivors and awareness. Later in the semester, an elegant, prestigious fall formal dance reception was held at the Clarion Hotel in Toledo, which consisted of several Kappa Psi graduate speakers. Each speaker, including Eric Geyer, offered valuable insights pertaining to his career path and helped set a great example for younger brothers. During the following spring semester, in addition to 10 more quality brothers being added to our chapter, eight brothers were accepted into the University of Toledo’s College of Pharmacy. Also, several Beta Lambda brothers became extensively involved in a canned food drive designed to benefit the Cherry Street Mission. The proceeds received by this mission benefited the homeless and unemployed in the city of Toledo. Also, several brothers attended Province V in Chicago, an experience that truly opened our eyes to the vastness and prestige that is Kappa Psi. It was during this historical convention that our chapter became acquainted with the brothers of Gamma Delta. Shortly after, the Beta Lambdas made several visits to Ohio Northern University to strengthen ties with their fellow brothers. The brothers of Beta Lambda are proud to be extending their positive influence to their community as well as their younger brothers. We look forward to many successful years to come! —Adam McCabe

We expect each of them to do great things for our chapter. We would also like to congratulate all of our brothers who graduated pharmacy school this year. One of our biggest events this semester was our 30th annual Tunnel Party. It was a huge success. We had brothers from many other chapters join us, as well as alumni and many of our good friends. It was a great night with live music, dancing and, of course, getting lost in the tunnel. We also celebrated the 40th anniversary of our house this semester. We really enjoyed the company of our alumni for the night. Our spring formal was hosted at Four Points by Sheraton in Asheville. In spite of the rainy weekend, we all had a great time together. Formal was an awesome night filled with great food, dancing, laughing, and deserving awards. We also participated in Relay for Life this year and raised a total of $2,528.51 to donate to the event. Each brother participated in some way—by walking, baking, selling baked goods, or by donating money. It was a great event to participate in and we were honored to be there. Some other community service events we participated in during the semester were bingo night at the SECU house, helping out at the food bank, and Adopt-aHighway cleanups.

We also did some fundraising for the chapter by continuing to do datechecking at the hospital throughout the semester. We gathered after school was out to do summer inventory for all the pharmacies in the hospital, and there have been a few brothers who have continued to help with date-checking during the early summer weeks when it was needed. During the rest of the summer, we have a few things we will be working on such as our summer party coming up July 9–10. This will give all of the brothers a chance to get back together and enjoy a relaxing and fun weekend with one another, and it is sure to be a great time. We are looking forward to the upcoming fall semester, planning some exciting events for rush, community service, and fundraising, but most of all we are eager to see all of our brothers we missed over the summer. —Nina Nicholson

Greetings fellow Kappa Psi members! Beta Sigma had a fantastic spring, with six new members initiated in March, and the news that we will have 12 of our members in the NDSU College of Pharmacy Class of 2014. We had a large service project this year in April, which was a campus-wide day of volunteering (“The Big Event”) across the FargoMoorhead area. This kept us busy, as well as spending a day at the two Ronald McDonald campuses in Fargo during Spring Initiation. We also participated in Greek Week, which entailed five days of events honoring the Greeks on campus. We enjoyed the opportunities to raise money for Relay for Life by paying to “Pie Your President” and attended a Queso Feed for the benefit of a national, nonprofit organization supporting Court Appointed Special Advocates. We also played kickball and a powderpuff football game with other Greeks on campus. Some of our members served a hot meal to low-income citizens of the community one evening, and a few participated in Relay for Life at NDSU. We worked at the Bon Jovi concert at the Fargodome this spring and held a banquet for the parents of our members at the house. It was so exciting meeting our peers’ parents and showing them around the house so they could get a feel for what we are all about. A few less memorable experiences occurred this spring as well, such as sandbagging and cleaning out the fridge in the college as a monthly duty; but the semester went very smoothly otherwise! Our numbers continue to grow and we are still looking into a remodeling project. A number of us attended a semiannual alumni meeting in Battle Lake, Minnesota, and were treated to beautiful weather, great company, and a delicious lunch. We look forward to seeing them again during Home coming next fall. What’s ahead? Most of our members are away this summer doing internships or working, but we will see them soon—end of August already! How time flies. We at Beta Sigma wish you a happy summer break.

But what better way to strengthen our brotherly bond than by helping our beloved charity, the American Lung Association’s Camp WIKIDAS (WIsconsin KIDs with ASthma). This camp is dedicated to helping kids who are on daily asthma medications. The children participate in a variety of camp activities and attend daily instructional sessions provided by physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and, of course, pharmacists on how to control their asthma. Last month, a few of our brothers went to the camp, to present them with more than $1,000. Looking back at the past year, a man can only smile and bask in the glory of his hard work slowly paying off day by day with a growing commitment to pharmacy as a profession and to an ever growing fraternal bond with members of Kappa Psi Beta Omega. The spring semester has come to an end and now with summer activities

on our minds, we can’t help but enjoy the pride felt to be a brother of Kappa Psi. With that being said, we would like to congratulate the members of Kappa Psi Beta Omega who have recently graduated: Dr. David Blythe, Dr. Christopher Donato, Dr. Jamie Ksiazek, Dr. Quoc Luong, Dr. Hung Luu, Dr. Brandon Matthews, and Dr. Ky Tran. Recently, Beta Omega had the opportunity to host a Call-A-Thon, where brothers of Kappa Psi phoned Temple University School of Pharmacy alumni who have made

donations to the school, indirectly making our education possible. Faculty member Christopher Van Vessem was in attendance making the event possible. Recently, Beta Omega hosted an alumni dinner at the Brew Works in Allentown, Pennsylvania. There was no shortage of alumni eager to partake in an enjoyable evening featuring speakers, awards, and silent auctions. Beta Omega would like to thank the evening’s keynote speaker, Paul Hiller, who gave a delightful speech about the virtues of brotherhood. We Summer 2010

would like to congratulate immediate past regent Mohamed Fouad for receiving the Brother of the Year award, and Alumnus of the Year was awarded to Frank Anthony Rubino ’63. Mr. Rubino has helped to create a restoration fund to help jump start renovations to our house on Allegheny Avenue. All funds raised during the event will be directed to improving the quality of the house, which as most of you know, is the foundation on which Beta Omega thrives. Also, congratulations to faculty member Christopher Van Vessem

Kappa Psi will be hosting events that include attending a Phillies game, Monday Night Football, cookouts whenever possible, and bowling. Pledges will have the opportunity to mingle with brothers and begin to learn what it takes to become a brother of Kappa Psi. Beta Omega brothers wish everyone a great summer, and we will see you in the fall, highly motivated to instill greatness and inspiration in the lives of people we meet.

Gamma Delta Ohio Northern University Founded 3/20/1920 Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy 525 S. Main St., Ada, OH 45810 gammadelta@kappapsi.org

Wow, the brothers of Gamma Delta have had an exciting year, working toward reactivation, developing our bylaws and future plans for the growth of our chapter. Throughout the year we worked hard to reestablish ourselves on the campus of Ohio Northern by becoming active with the local Elks lodge and their Cerebral Palsy Bowling program. We assisted people with cerebral palsy to do something they love to do—bowl! We also made tie blankets for Project Linus, which is an organization that gives homemade blankets to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or who are in need. In February, we had a Valentine’s Day Luncheon for the pharmacy faculty. It was our way to show the College of Pharmacy how much we really appreciate everything they do for us. Gamma Delta also participated in Kappa Phi’s Sing-A-Thon, donating food to the local food bank, numerous 5Ks, and Relay for Life, all which helped to show our support for other campus organizations and the

community. Our professional activity for the year was an Asthma/COPD Outreach program that allowed us to help educate the community. We are planning to continue this activity next year. The highlight of the year was on March 20 when we celebrated our 90th anniversary. That morning began with the initiation of 30 new brothers: Brittany Barnhisel, Kelly Casad, Christina Conley, Jordan Counts, Megan Devlin, Anne Durham, Emily Erven, Ryan Finke, Daniel Gedeon, Charles “Cody” Hay, Ryan Kates, Alexander Koudelka, Christina Loritz, Tristan Maiers, Elissa McCracken, Jason Mersek, Marqui Milford, Ryan Naseman, Tiffany Olberding, Amy Pasternak,

Gamma Epsilon University of Nebraska Founded 3/20/1920 Univ. of Nebraska College of Pharmacy, 985025 Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, NE 68198 gammaepsilon@kappapsi.org

Spring is always a busy time at the Gamma Epsilon chapter. Our biggest undertaking is planning and executing our annual philanthropy, Hoops for Healing. This yearly basketball tournament raises money for Camp Floyd Rogers, a camp for children living with Type I diabetes. A lively group of teams showed up to compete for the championship in both the men’s and women’s divisions of the three-onthree tournament. With everyone’s help, we managed to raise enough money to help support camper fees for children otherwise unable to attend. Spring was not all work and no play. Gamma Epsilon teamed up with the

UNMC chapter of Kappa Epsilon for a fun night of Kappa Karaoke. We also enjoyed our second annual social with the Beta Nu brothers at Creighton University at the Old Mattress Factory. With new officers elected, we are looking forward to a great 2010–2011.

Gamma Zeta Samford University Founded 3/20/1935 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, AL 35229 gammazeta@kappapsi.org

Gamma Zeta had an outstanding spring semester. We held a fundraiser in the form of a Trivia Night game to benefit the student relief fund for the school. Students formed teams to answer questions in categories such as pop culture, sports and pharmacy. While having fun in the process, the fundraiser was a great success. When the weather got a little warmer, broth-

ers went on a weekend camping and rafting trip to the Ocoee River in Tennessee, which proved to be an excellent adventure and time of fellowship. Several brothers attended the Province V assembly in April to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Chi chapter. For a week near the end of the semester in April, Kappa Psi teamed up to support local charities with other organizations at school such as SSHP and NCPA. For Philanthropy Week, Kappa Psi held fundraisers or donation drives each day to support a different charity in conjunction with a different organization. These charities included the Humane Society, Jimmy Hale Mission, and the Boys and Girls Club of Birmingham, among others. To finish off the week and end the semester with a bang, our chapter, along with APhA-ASP, held the first annual Apothecary Ball, the proceeds of which will always go to benefit a charity. In June, nine Gamma Zeta brothers went to Tallahassee for the Province IV conclave and enjoyed a fun and enriching weekend with our brothers from across the Province. —Joel Meulemans

Gamma Iota University of Buffalo Founded 1/16/1921 Cooke Hall, North Campus, Amherst, NY 14260 gammaiota@kappapsi.org

Having a successful year, Gamma Iota chapter would first like to thank Chi chapter for being a great host at the Province V assembly in Chicago, Illinois. We had a great time and got Summer 2010

to meet many other brothers from our region. Gamma Iota received the Province V Chapter of the Year award for being the best of 14 chapters in our Province; Province V Service award for the most philanthropic events; and a few other awards including our Risk Management video thanks to Curtis K. Johnston. We would also like to congratulate Brother Wesley Miller for being reelected to his second term as parliamentarian and Brother Jackie Oot as Historian for the Province V e-board for this upcoming year. This past spring semester has been quite busy for the brothers of Gamma Iota. In continuing with the yearlong philanthropy project, the chapter hosted a table in the student union every month and exhibited various posters: one listed the causes and treatments of GERD and heartburn; February’s listed blood pressure and cholesterol goals; and March’s detailed various types of cancers, their prevalence, and various therapies. In April, we hosted a table where we had different handouts regarding STIs. Gamma Iota had the opportunity to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at UB, and a number of our brothers were also able to take part in the March of Dimes to help raise money to prevent birth defects, premature births, and infant mortality. Along with this, we have been collecting pink Yoplait lids to help support breast cancer research as well as soda tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Foundation. As the semester comes to a close, we are all eager to see how our newlyelected officers will do in their positions and hope the best for them. Gamma Iota wrapped everything up with our annual end-of-the-year banquet before finals began. Most of us had a chance to talk to and congratulate all the senior P4s before they graduated and spend time with all the current Gamma-Iota brothers before the end of the semester. With summer starting, Gamma Iota is trying to plan some sunscreen education/wellness clinics to raise awareness of proper sun protection for the skin when going outdoors. Summer also means that fall is right around the corner, so we are setting up online chat meetings to plan our rushing and pledging process for the upcoming year. Most of all, we will be busy planning for the Province V Midyear meeting which will be held in Buffalo this fall. We hope everyone has a great and safe summer. —Kim Van

Gamma Kappa has had a busy spring semester this year working on various service projects. After welcoming a new brother to our chapter, Britta Hystad, we have had 38 new pledges this past year! This is just over half of the Class of 2013, and we hope to use these new brothers to continue the growth and strength of our chapter. Congratulations to Britta for successfully completing the pledging process and proving she is competent in the ways of Kappa Psi. She will definitely be an asset to our chapter. This semester has been full of activities; most recently, we had our annual Spring Formal. This was an excellent opportunity for our brothers to get dressed up and enjoy each other’s company outside of the classroom. As always, the event was a hit and would not have happened if it weren’t for the many hours Jillian Tucek and Corrie Thurmer put into planning the formal. Thank you ladies! The Gamma Kappa brothers have also been active around the Brookings community volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club, helping fill bags at the Backpack Project, walking our ditch for Adopt-a-Highway, walking in Relay for Life, and fundraising for the Ronald McDonald House. Our chapter has also been collecting box tops for the local elementary schools. We turned in our efforts at the end of the school year and hope that it will benefit the elementary students. As the year was winding down, many of our P4 brothers received awards as they graduated from the SDSU College of Pharmacy. Congrat-

After a short two-week spring break, Gamma Nu immediately pre-

pared to commend our graduating third-year brothers during Grad Week. It was a weeklong affair with events such as a night on a house boat, renting out Touch UltraLounge, many gatherings at the fraternity house to reconnect, and culminating with our customary Graduation Banquet. On May 15, we welcomed new doctors: Henry Chang, Edwin Kim, Sameer Rakholia, Aarondeep Basrai, Michael Abram, Russell Yee, Oliver Hsu, Amal Thakarsey, Dipam Doshi, Tyler Hanson, Tony Stricker, and Daniel Perez to our alumni ranks. Special recognition goes to Russell and Oliver for receiving the top overall GPAs of their graduating class as well as Henry “Legend” Chang for Brother of the Year. summer semester and the two events we love best: Luau and Rafting. As is tradition, our Annual Luau was hosted by alumnus Dr. Ross Chang in his beautiful home in Discovery Bay. It was a day filled with festivities and recollection as alumni and collegiate brothers celebrated the lifelong bond of brotherhood. To top the day off, we had a raffle of 300 tickets (three sets: red, gray, white) with a prize for every 10th ticket drawn. This year’s three grand prize winners of $1,000 were Dr. Thang Truong, Dr. Les Hankinson, and Dr. Derrick Egi. Waking up bright and early, still groggy from the night before, the brothers of Gamma Nu proceeded to travel to Rancho Cordova and engage in a full day of rafting down the rapids of the American River. While the river may have been tame, the brothers are always able to bring the fun and spent the time in the wilderness forming new, cherished memories. It proved to be the perfect ending to a great weekend. We thank our outgoing first vice regent, Kevin Lau, for all his diligent work to make it possible. In miscellaneous news, our Kappa Psi Raiders upheld the legacy of Gamma Nu intramurals by completing the year undefeated and winning back-to-back Flag Football League Championships. Alumnus Dr. Raj Ghandi, Pharm.D., M.B.A. had an article entitled “Pulmonary arterial hypertension: Bridging the gap between efficacy, quality of life, and cost-effectiveness in the peer-reviewed journal, Formulary.

Finally, Gamma Nu will host our 50th anniversary this fall and it is safe to say there is a lot of work to be done beforehand. If any brother needs to get in touch with our chapter, feel free to contact either Brenden Whitt (boo.808@gmail.com) or Samuel Ekern (sgekern@gmail.com).

The past few months have been very eventful for the Gamma Rho chapter. We have been involved in quite a few fundraising and charity events. Most notably, Gamma Rho participated in the Province IX initiative to conduct bone marrow drives. Our chapter was also able to contribute to the GCC fund by having a garage sale in which a substantial amount of money was raised. Finally, Gamma Rho (with the sponsorship of CVS) capped off the end of the school year by joining the 16th Annual Mud Volleyball Tournament. The tournament brings in 9,000+ spectators and raised $412,000 last year for special needs children in New Mexico.

Summer is now upon us and Gamma Sigma chapter is happy to

report another productive spring semester in Gainesville. We’ve already seen some clear benefits from the Chapter Development Seminar provided by fellow PIV Brothers Abe Duncan, Marvin Smith, and Buck Butler in mid-February. This spring semester, our student government hosted the annual College of Pharmacy Formal the week following spring break. Two of our brothers were actively involved in the success of the formal, with Scott Cohen doing a huge amount of planning and Brian Fung acting as the DJ for the event. These two brothers, along with a few others from the 1PD and 2PD classes, definitely raised the bar for future COP formals. A couple weeks later, our 1PD brothers received their coats at the UF White Coat Ceremony. Congratulations to them as they progress as professionals through the pharmacy curriculum. It was a great day for the 1PDs as well as the other brothers who worked to make the event memorable. The following week was a busy one for the brothers of Gamma Sigma. Student government hosted the annual Mortar and Pestle Awards, with many of our brothers being either nominated for or winning these peerselected awards. That same night Gamma Sigma hosted our annual luau, a fun time for everyone who attended that greatly benefited the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research. A few of our brothers also joined KE for Relay for Life the following evening. If that wasn’t enough to pack into two days, we hosted our Summer 2010

annual golf tournament to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network at Shands the next morning. We had 28 players in total for the event, with nearly all of our brothers either competing or working the event. As usual, the tourney was a great opportunity for active brothers to reconnect with some of our graduates and friends of Gamma Sigma. Congratulations to our ten 4PD brothers who graduated this May and are now entering the workplace. It’s certainly been a great ride for the past four years and we’re sure they will continue to influence the character of our chapter for years to come. Gamma Sigma’s annual camping trip at Ginnie Springs saw some great grilling and plenty of tubing down the Santa Fe River. Finally, Gamma Sigma would like to thank Delta Iota (perhaps the classiest group of gentlemen in Tally) for hosting a fantastic PIV summer conclave this June. As always, it was wonderful spending time with brothers from throughout our region. —Brian Fung

We are very pleased to say we have had an oh-so-busy spring semester. First and foremost, thank you to all of those who came out to the Province IX meeting in Tucson, Arizona, in March. We appreciate all of the brotherhood you helped bring to our area. We had an amazing time getting to meet new brothers, as well as getting to reacquaint ourselves with those we had met previously. The Province meeting was a huge success, and again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Late April and early May proved to be a busy time for us. We held anoth-

At this event, we welcomed in our new officers and honored our achievements from the past school year. This event was a bittersweet time for all of us because this is when we wish our P3s farewell as they leave for rotations. We are proud of you. We would like to also recognize Gamma Upsilon’s own Breanna Bernaducci, our Province IX Vice Satrap. Congratulations Bre! Gamma Upsilon brothers are proud to say we worked hard to help out our community this past semester. We took part in the El Rio Health Fair in Tucson and screened individuals to become members of the Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry. At this point, we have screened about 150 individuals for the registry. This coming fall semester, we plan on having another great rush event in order to bring in more brothers to Kappa Psi. We look forward to initiation and a successful future. —Matthew Bertsch

But the brothers went out on a good note, getting a victory in their last game before heading to Charleston. In early April, the Gamma Phi chapter held its annual formal in Charleston, South Carolina. Many of the brothers spent the weekend out on the town with each other and their dates. It was a nice time for everyone to relax before having to prepare for upcoming final exams. Some of the Little Sisters joined in as well, and a new Sweetheart was chosen. Everyone had a great time down in Charleston. School wrapped up for the first-year brothers in mid-April so they could return home for their three-week Service Learning Experience. A few

weeks later, the rest of the chapter finished their school year as well. Gamma Phi had seven fourth-year brothers finish rotations and graduate in May. The chapter is very proud of each of them: Evan Anderson, Matt Badr, Chris Coleman, Abe Duncan, Chris Haire, and Junior Ikpeme. We wish them success as they transition into professional practice. Now that summer has begun, the brothers are participating in a variety of camps for children in need as part of the university’s Service Learning Program. For one week, students attend a camp session for children with a variety of health conditions ranging from asthma to type I diabetes to cancer. It’s been a great experience for the guys being able to help out at these camps, and has also been

a time for many who have returned to different parts of the state for the summer to reconnect with one another. Although summer break is only half over, the chapter is already working on plans for the new school year. The brothers are getting ready to put together some fun events for rush week and hope to have an exciting new pledge class in the fall. —Matt Disharoon

Our chapter raised more than $2,000 dollars! This year the Relay for Life theme was more birthdays and less cancer. Our birthday campsite had a dinosaur theme and won the award for the best campsite. We also won the award for the spirit of relay. It was fun and rewarding to help such a worthy cause, and we can’t wait to do it again next year. The day after Relay for Life, April 17, we had our formal. This semester our formal was held in Auburn in the Conference Center and was a great success. Several of our brothers, including some from other chapters,

Our last philanthropy event of the semester was a grill-out at Hope Lodge, a place for cancer patients to stay while undergoing treatment at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This was a great success, and we hope to continue our partnership in the future. Several brothers also participated in the Ronald McDonald 5K Run/Walk to raise money for this worthwhile cause. Our last chapter meeting was at GCD Deanna McDanel’s home, where we enjoyed a great potluck and pulled pork/burgers. Finally, 33 percent of our chapter was present at the Province VIII spring conclave in Omaha, garnering us the traveling trophy for the chapter having the highest percentage of brothers in attendance! Spring semester had Delta Kappa bustling with activity. Amidst the daily routine of classes, tests, and studying, the chapter also continued with monthly community service projects, ran a semester long of pledging Spring Line 2010, held fundraisers, attended the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition (held in our own home city, Washington, D.C.), held a mixer with nearby Sigma chapter, planned our traditional surprise Senior Banquet, and at the end of it all, said “farewell” and “good luck” to our cherished seniors. One of our most successful community service projects throughout the semester was held at Thrive DC, a local food shelter in Washington, D.C. Here, brothers spent four-hour shifts setting up dining tables, cooking either breakfast or dinner, serving the meal, cleaning up, and preparing takehome bags with non-perishable food items for about 200 Washington, D.C., residents in need of help. Another outstanding community service project Delta Kappa worked on throughout spring semester was at Food and Friends, a volunteer-supported organization that meets the daily nutritional needs of people living with HIV/AIDS, their families, and caregivers in Washington, D.C. At the Food and Friends facility, brothers helped to prepare bagged meals. Delta Kappa was also able to have a

On this day, Café Luna gave 50 percent of their profits to Food and Friends. But the eating and donating didn’t just stop at Café Luna—many D.C. restaurants also pledged to give a portion or all of their profits to Food and Friends. As many of you know, this year’s APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition was held in our nation’s beautiful capital, Washington, D.C., March 12–15. As D.C. is home to Delta Kappa, many of our brothers were able to partake in the exciting events held by APhA. As an added bonus, we were able to meet brothers from all over the country. While most of our chapter can testify that spring semester 2010 was overloaded with activities and projects, Spring Line 2010 can say they had enough work to fill two semesters. April 19 was our chapter’s founding day, and this year it marked the 24th anniversary of Delta Kappa! We celebrated the week with a “Kookout” theme—Kupkake day, Pizza day, puttputt golf, and a barbecue with alumni. We topped off the week with a clothing drive for Sasha Bruce Youthwork in Washington, D.C.

The Class of 2010 graduates are prepared to step into a new season of their lives. Congratulations to Brothers Brienna Chappell, Tiana Holmes, Jasmeet Kaur, Michael Onijala (Kaiser Permanente Resident), Anissa Ryan Ferguson, Rishita Shah, Tara Smith, Melanie Stevenson, Shelby Taylor, and Kenric Ware (South University School of Pharmacy Resident). We celebrated their accomplishments in a lavish style at Josephine’s in Washington, D.C. The event was themed “Delta Kappa and the City.” The graduating brothers were the hot topics of the night as they entered dressed in chic dresses and stylish suits. Summer for Delta Kappa started off with a fundraiser on May 23 at Bike DC, which offers 20 miles of car-free bike riding throughout Washington, D.C., and Arlington, Virginia. Brothers helped to set up and provide snacks and drinks to relieved bikers.

Delta Lambda Campbell University Founded 4/23/1988 School of Pharmacy, P.O. Box 1090 Buies Creek, NC 27506 deltalambda@kappapsi.org

Delta Lambda has had a fantastic spring semester. Spring break was a great breather for everyone. Regent Dawn Annas, treasurer Marie Davies,

Brothers Dana Fasanella and Christine Cho attended this year’s APhA meeting in Washington, D.C., with faculty Brother Dr. Andrew Bowman and others during the last part of spring break. Following the break, Delta Lambda had initiation on Saturday, March 20. The day of initiation, pledgemaster Alana and assistants Dan and Brad planned a spectacular obstacle course and cookout. Everyone had a fantastic time with the games. Following initiation that evening, brothers went to Doughboys to hang out and socialize.

Congratulations to our new brother, Anthony Gregorio, for he will be an asset to our Brotherhood, and thanks to pledgemaster Alana and assistants Dan and Brad for all the hard work they did this semester in preparing Anthony for initiation. For all her hard work with the pledging process, Alana was voted Brother of the Month for March. Sara Hester, first vice regent, planned Delta Lambda’s Cadet Ball all semester long and did a fantastic job. The ball was held at The River Room in Wilmington, North Carolina. Congratulations to Brother Ashley Barnes for receiving the Delta Lambda Brother of the Year honor, which was presented at the Cadet Ball. For this memorable event, Sara was awarded Brother of the Month for April. To help with some funding for Formal, we had a car wash at Advance Auto Parts. Assistant treasurer Esther Yi has also done a great job with fundraisers this semester. She coordinated the car wash to help fund Formal and also put together an extremely successful yard sale where we raised $302. We also had two bake sales in April and the money we raised from the yard and bake sales went to the Autism Foundation. Again, we had another successful cookout at the end of March where half of the money was given to our Brie Ann Reynolds Summer 2010

Scholarship and half was donated to Multiple Sclerosis. Brother Sara Roberts coordinated a Jeans Day and sold ribbons to help with the Wounded Marines Fund. Last semester, there was $500 left over in funds and we decided to donate an additional $100 to the Wounded Marines Fund, $150 to Cystic Fibrosis, and $250 to a girl, whom a brother met on a mission trip to Belize last summer, needing tuition to go to pharmacy school. . Service chair Meredith Mahaffee did a good job planning service events. We had two roadside cleanups and a day at Brookfield Nursing Home for St. Patrick’s Day. Meredith and second vice regent Stephanie Zyra helped in Campbell University’s Relay for Life College of Pharmacy team. Kappa Psi contributed to the pharmacy school team by hosting a cookout and providing burgers and hotdogs. During the College of Pharmacy’s Health Fair, Kappa Psi provided PMRs to students and people who came to the fair. Ritualist Melissa Buchanan helped gather information for Operation Inasmuch, our campuswide community service day where Kappa Psi provided PMRs again. As part of Anthony’s pledging process, he planned a Bingo Night service event at Brookfield Nursing Home. Scholarship chair Janna Currie and her committee put together Exam Kits for exam week where they sent out letters to pharmacy students’ parents and they purchased the kits for the students. Brothers helped donate various items such as ramen, pencils, erasers, etc., to put in the exam kits. We made a profit of $600, which was given to our annual Brie Ann Reynolds Scholarship. Following Operation Inasmuch, Brothers Dawn, Meredith, Lan, Lauren, Anthony, Nidhi, and Katherine went to Beta Xi to participate in their Tunnel Party and had a wonderful time. In addition, regent Dawn Annas, treasurer Marie Davies, and Brother Christine Cho helped out at Tour de Cure this year while Brother Cara Wilby actually participated in the race this summer. Ritualist Melissa Buchanan has been busy this summer where she attended PIV in Tallahassee and had a fantastic time with the brothers. Melissa also attended the Cardinal Health Leadership Conference and ASHP summer meeting and met several brothers. Congratulations to Ashley Barnes who got married in May and had a beautiful wedding at Butler Chapel at Campbell University.

The brothers of Delta Nu had a wonderful spring quarter. We have focused on health and wellness through volunteer work at the Groovin’ in the Grove 5K held at Midwestern University in March and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in Chicago this August. For Founders Day, our chapter brought in a nuclear pharmacist to talk to the entire college of pharmacy about a career in nuclear pharmacy. To wrap up the school year, our Delta Nu brothers participated in some interfraternity games including both a bags and a volleyball tournament. We hope to expand these activities next school year with an Interfraternity Olympics to consist of volleyball, flag football, bags, and three-legged races, among other things. The brothers gathered one last time for food and fun after finals week, with one of our brothers graciously hosting at her home. It was a night to remember and we look forward to the beginning of fall quarter to enjoy more fellowship with all of our brothers. After attending the Province V assembly in Chicago this April, the brothers of Delta Nu were inspired to work toward earning the Most Improved Chapter award. As host of the Province V assembly in fall of 2011, Delta Nu has formed a committee to plan the gathering, and they have been hard at work throughout the summer. We know it takes a lot of time and planning, and we are determined to host one of the best assemblies to date! —Lindsey Brown

With summer finally here, it’s time to dust off the sun block and swimwear. The Delta Xi brothers are currently enjoying their summer break after a busy school year. In February, we had our annual Vial of Life event at the Health Fair held in the Apple Blossom Mall, where we passed out more than 500 vials this year! The brothers worked together to greet many of the Winchester residents and explained the purpose of the vials, how to fill out the forms, and where to store the vials. In March, we welcomed 14 eager new brothers to our Delta Xi chapter: Martin Dam, Emily Deal, Dayna Drobny, Han Fang, Keith Fairall, Tim Hoang, Vik Jain, Gloria Kang, Rosa Lee, Chung-Ling Liao, David Ngo, Aileen Pham, Jenny Tran and Michael Yee. To celebrate their initiation, the new brothers hosted a Brothers Social for the whole chapter. The Delta Rho chapter had an exciting and busy end of the spring semester. We continued our monthly health promotion activities with skin cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis awareness and education outreach events. Brothers used the DermaView scanner to measure the amount of skin damage caused by UV rays, and performed bone density scans at the NSU spring health fair. We also organized a diabetes awareness booth at a local Publix supermarket, during which brothers tested people’s blood glucose and educated them on diabetes basics. The event was a big success and led to an offer to make the outreach a recurring monthly event which Publix will sponsor. Brothers got a short but muchneeded break from studying for finals with the annual Greek Wars, an outdoors mini-Olympiad in which all three pharmaceutical fraternities on campus compete every year. It was Kappa Psi’s turn to host the festivities, and brothers worked hard to organize all the activities of the day, which included flag football, kickball, tug of war, capture the flag, three-legged race, and a pie-eating contest. Kappa Psi was dominating the competition, but unfortunately the fun came to a screeching halt when a severe thunderstorm struck the playing field and

Continuing our philanthropy, groups of Delta Sigma brothers volunteered their knowledge and expertise in the Asthma Walk on the 15th and the Diabetes Expo on the 24th of April. Brothers and other members of APhA-ASP helped educate people about diabetes and asthma, ensuring a better quality of life for each patient. We then had our annual kickball competition between Kappa Psi and Phi Delta Chi, Midwestern University’s two pharmacy fraternities on campus. It was very entertaining watching students do everything they possibly could to avoid getting out, even heading toward the outfield in order to get to second base. In the end, Phi Delta Chi was no match for Kappa Psi, and we continue to win year after year. Every quarter we try to have one big blowout party and this quarter it was our toga party. Spring quarter kicked off with an epic two-day camping retreat at Potrero County Park, California. We pitched our tents, but only after what seemed like an hour of strategic planning, some trial and error, and of course, some poking, swinging, thrusting, and javelin throwing of the tent poles. With our fort manned and supplied, Delta Phi embarked on an adventurous hike to explore the neighboring hillside. Some running creeks, steep valleys, big rocks, and some jumping, climbing, Greek-letter posing, and firewood collecting later, our expedition made it back to camp just in time for some afternoon group activities and fun. As the evening drew closer, Delta Phi fired up the barbecue grill for some trusty hot dogs, burgers, great laughs, and great bonding. The night drew to a close as we huddled around the campfire blaze sharing scary stories, embarrassing moments, and fond memories. As another school year comes to an end and summer begins, many of us in the Delta Psi chapter have been pretty busy starting internships or IPPEs, as well as rooting for the Minnesota Twins! This past March, a few brothers from our chapter took a weekend trip up to Breezy Point where we met up with our fellow Epsilon brothers from the Twin Cities campus. At Breezy we got a chance to socialize with them through a series of bonfires, dinners, and sporting events. Luckily they were good sports, and we hope to join Epsilon again next spring for this yearly event. Later in the spring semester, a couple of brothers were able to attend this year’s conclave in Omaha, Nebraska. Kappa Psi brothers who have recently graduated! An eventful year it has been, including so many memories that we will never forget. Good luck in all your future endeavors. Founders Day. Despite our busy schedules with work, summer activities or internships, EG is constantly working to prepare for its next event. July 24 is right around the corner and our chapter can’t wait to get together for some brother bonding for our Founders Day celebration—Luau Style. We’re going to be barbecuing, bowling with pineapples, and giving away door prizes. It’s going to be sizzling! Philanthropy. Just recently, 32 brothers decided to get together to “walk the walk” at the annual Revlon Run/Walk on May 8 to support breast and ovarian cancer awareness. Our team raised a generous $2,806 for this great cause. There is nothing better than giving back to the community while enjoying each other’s company. Expect Epsilon Gamma to be continuously involved over the summer with events such as beach cleanup, health fairs, and, of course, our biweekly visits to Riverside, California, for the Student Run Health Clinic. Province IX Fall Assembly Planning Progress. Epsilon Gamma has been busy planning and preparing for the next Province IX fall conference located in Pasadena and Pomona. Near the end of the academic school year, our chapter and respective committees have been very busy working out the kinks, shooting out ideas, and brainstorming with one goal in mind—to plan the best Province IX meeting ever. The location has been set, the hotel has been reserved, and registration is finalized. Epsilon Gamma guarantees to put on a great conference

We have arranged for visiting brothers to stay at the Courtyard by Marriott in beautiful Old Town Pasadena. Our Saturday meeting will be held at Western University of Health Sciences, right in the heart of Pomona, California—or should we say, “P-Town!” Our Province IX Planning Committees are hard at work preparing some great social events, to make transportation smooth, and ensure a great time. We hope many brothers can come to our conference, so please mark your calendars for October 8–10, 2010. Feel free to address your questions regarding this event to Epsilon Gamma’s regent, Van Nguyen, at nguyennvan@gmail.com.

Epsilon Delta University of Appalachia Founded 4/12/2008 College of Pharmacy 1060 Dragon Road, Oakwood, VA 24631 epsilondelta@kappapsi.org

The spring flew by quickly for the brothers of Epsilon Delta. On April 10, we held our second annual Golf Tournament in Bristol, Virginia. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year with part of the proceeds going to New Beginnings, a long-term substance abuse care facility. The weather was beautiful as we enjoyed a fun day in the sun playing golf, fellowshipping with other brothers, and raising money for a good cause. The following weekend, 11 brothers, along with

the chapter’s GCD, Dr. Jennifer Campbell, and two non-brothers attended the 30th Annual Tunnel Party in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. All the brothers and non-brothers had a great time trying to get through the tunnel and relaxing with brothers from other chapters. We want to thank Beta Xi for their generous hospitality and care that weekend. Dr. Campbell put together a health fair at ACP for all the students. Kappa Psi had a special booth and checked the cholesterol of the people in the community who came to the fair. The Appalachian area is rural and poverty stricken, so most members of the community never see health care providers unless it is at an event such as ours. Kappa Psi was delighted to participate in this health fair and educate the community on the importance of having good cholesterol. As the summer progresses, the brothers will be working hard to plan for the Province III meeting in October. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer holds for us!

The ceremony consisted of several speeches from Big Brothers with personal awards given to each of the new brothers who expressed their personality. At the next chapter meeting, new officer elections were held. Many of the Gamma brothers showed great leadership skills and brought new ideas to the chapter. Our new officers include: Eric Manzano, regent; Sushmeet Singh, first vice regent; Randy Duckworth, second vice regent; Stacy Takayama, treasurer; Aisha Chin, recording secretary; Sheryce Scott, corresponding secretary; Hong Tran, sergeant at arms; Harvey Castillo, chaplain; and Monica Oh, historian. Dr. Aaron Prince was

also elected as the chapter’s co-GCD for EI along with Dr. Dave Carroll for the upcoming academic year. The newly elected officers promised to bring stronger brotherhood, fun activities, and unity to the chapter. Immediately following the initiation, the 2009–2010 academic year came to an end with an array of professional events for the EI brothers. The chapter participated in an Asian American health fair, helped feed the homeless at a local shelter, and attended Dr. Prince’s informational session on residencies. The turnouts were great, as the brothers are hoping to make each an annual event for the future. With new leadership, new ideas, and 48 brothers to work together, we are excited for this upcoming school

year when CNCP will accept its third class to the campus. We are ready to keep moving forward and advance our chapter, which will solidify the history and tradition of Kappa Psi. —Monica Oh

It’s been a very exciting year for the Mu Omicron Pi chapter. Our winter pledges have successfully completed their pledge process and we are proud to call them our brothers. We are also proud of our three brothers who have graduated this May: James Cross, Lamar Hanna, and Timothy Lavens. They have been great brothers and we wish them successful careers as pharmacists. We are continuing renovations to our chapter house. As for our immediate community, we have been busy around the clock with fundraising and volunteer work. betes screening, and offering our support to underserved clinics were just some of our local endeavors. One of our brothers just completed CPR certificate teaching training in preparation for our annual CPR certification fundraiser with the incoming P1s. Chi chapter set the bar high at this year’s Province V spring conclave in Chicago, which is why we have been working extremely hard on the 2011 spring conclave that will be here in Detroit. All the brothers have done a great job organizing it so far. A special shout-out to Terence for all the hard work and negotiations he had to undertake in order to make it all happen next year. We look forward to hosting a great Province for all of our Kappa Psi brothers.

Coincidently, this was our founding date back in 1920. The day began with the initiation of 30 new brothers into the Gamma Delta chapter. The ceremony was conducted by the brothers of Ada Grad and assisted by Grand Vice Regent Kali Weaver and Graduate Memberat-Large Latha Radhakrishnan. Following the initiation, brothers and guests made their way over to the Ohio Northern Inn for a reception followed by the 90th Anniversary Banquet at the ONU McIntosh Center. During the banquet, old and new brothers mingled and strong Kappa Psi bonds were being built. The banquet concluded when Grand Vice Regent Weaver asked Brother Cameron Van Dyke to present the original charter to chapter regent Alex Koudelka. We would like to thank the brothers of Province V who came to celebrate with us along with Past Grand Regent Brian Reisetter. In all, we had more than 100 excited brothers and guests ranging in Kappa Psi experience from first day up to 60 years to continue the lasting legacy of the Gamma Delta chapter on the ONU campus. Ada Grad helped celebrate the end of the school year with the Gamma Delta chapter by attending the yearend picnic. It was a fun time getting to see the excitement in the students’ eyes, and we look forward to many more events in the future.

The AZ Grad brothers have been taking advantage of the beautiful spring weather in Arizona with some outdoor events. The first of these events was a Spring Training game on

a warm March afternoon with the hometown Diamondbacks taking on the Seattle Mariners. Brothers came and relaxed in the lawn behind the outfield fence while watching baseball and spending quality time with brothers. The second of these outdoor events took place on the Arizona State University campus as several AZ Grad brothers strapped on their running shoes to take part in the 6th annual Pat’s Run. This 4.2-mile run honors former ASU football star, Pat Tillman, who after playing for the Arizona Cardinals, left the NFL to serve in the U.S. Army and was subsequently killed. AZ Grad ran as a team with the brothers of Delta Sigma alongside nearly 30,000 race participants. This team-building event was followed up with a lunch near the ASU campus. Many AZ Grad brothers also attended the spring Province meeting hosted by Gamma Upsilon in Tucson. We all had a great time and would like to thank the brothers of Gamma Upsilon for putting together such a fantastic weekend. AZ Grad is eager to welcome many newly graduated brothers to the chapter. We are always happy to grow larger and build bonds with new brothers. We also elected a new set of officers who are looking forward to another year of growth and improvement. Some of our upcoming events that will be taking place in July include going to Chase Field in Phoenix to watch the Diamondbacks take on the San Francisco Giants and also gathering the brothers for a bowling night.

District of Columbia Grad

districtofcolumbiagrad@kappapsi.org

Greetings from the District of Columbia Graduate chapter! After being inactive for 50 years, our chapter was rechartered in February of 2009. These efforts were organized and led by Brother Angela R. Appling, an alumna of the Delta Kappa chapter, and supported by 11 other area graduate brothers who shared in her fervent belief that Kappa Psi is for life. In its mission, D.C. Grad hopes to provide ongoing community service throughout the D.C. area, promote the profession of pharmacy on all levels, foster the professional needs of graduate brothers, actively recruit for potential brothers as well as reclaim alumni brothers, and provide both guidance and support as needed to the local collegiate chapter, Delta Kappa, .

42

To date, the chapter has completed several community service initiatives, including a back to school event for the youth, providing clothes and toiletries for needy families in the D.C. area, and feeding the homeless at a local church. The brothers of D.C. Grad are very active with our collegiate brothers of Delta Kappa. We fellowship with them at social events, attend and lead professional/educational events during their Kappa Psi Weeks, and provide a strong presence at all of their pledging events. D.C. Grad will offer our first book scholarship to a Delta Kappa brother in the fall of 2010. Our other future endeavors include growing our chapter membership and enhancing our community service efforts. Of particular interest to the chapter is the HIV/AIDS epidemic in our nation’s capital. Several brothers have already dedicated time and energy toward providing MTM counseling at area clinics for patients living with HIV/AIDS. We are truly excited about continuing to work toward improving our chapter year after year. —Stephanie J. Spence

Minnesota Grad chapter brothers have been enjoying their spring and summer as usual. The spring meeting was held again at Axel’s Bonfire in St. Paul on May 20. The Risk Management policy was reviewed, officers gave reports, and elections were held. There is returning leadership to the executive board and the new grads stepped up to the plate to take on some of the roles as well. A big congrats to the new officers of 2010–2012: Christy Askew, regent; Cecelia Byers, vice regent; Tiffany Reintz, secretary/treasurer; Kelly Marrs, chaplain; Katie Hines, historian; Anne Spenningsby, social coordinator; Anna Battcher, sergeant at arms; and Kelly Moritz, scholarship chair. Thank you to the outgoing board; your leadership and passion for Kappa Psi has led the MN Grad chapter well for the last two years. Graduate brothers participated in the ALA Lung Walk 2010 around Lake Como in St. Paul on June 12. Thanks goes out to Tiffany Reintz for getting things organized for the chapter. Brothers raised $1,400 and a team bravely walked the lake in dreary wet weather to support the American Lung Association. It was particularly important this year, as some of the donations go to Camp SuperKids, which is having trouble making ends

meet. Camp is still on despite economic hardship and runs July 11–16. MN Grad looks forward to spending time teaching kids about their asthma medications and bonding with Epsilon brothers. The grad chapter still has some summer events with dates in the works, but is looking forward to the annual Barbecue Extravaganza and the St. Paul Saints game with the Delta Psi and Epsilon brothers. With good form, the brothers of Pacific Grad began summer with a bang! As spring faded away, summer was welcomed with Pacific Grad strength and prosperity. Activities included Gamma Nu’s pledging, graduation, and the annual luau. Pledging is the time of year where the spirit of brotherhood is passed on from one generation to the next. Over the four-week pledge process, the Gamma-Nu’s 2010 Upsilon Pledge Class met Pacific Grad Brothers Ali Tran, Avinesh Raman, Brad Hanna, Brent Chock, Bruch Uch, Chris Amaral, Dany Khloth, David Mitchell, Derrick Egi, Grant Nakahara, Jon Hashimoto, Joseph Wong, Justin Borras-Reed, Kevin Chang, Les Hankinson, Mahan Patel, Mark Chang, Michael Ignacio, Raj Gandhi, Roger Santos, Ross Bauman, Ryan Ita, Sam Hodges, Scott Spears, and Sunny Bains. A special thanks to all of the brothers who participated in providing the fundamentals of brotherhood.

The smell of graduation was in the air during the month of May and as the temperature rose in Stockton, so did the standard of celebration for the graduates. The Gamma Nu graduation reception was held at the house and provided an opportunity for families to see the strength and unity of the Brotherhood. Moreover, it was another chance for the graduates to step into the spotlight to be recognized and for one brother to be awarded the coveted Brother of the Year Award for outstanding dedication to the Fraternity. Pacific Grad would like to congratulate the following graduates: Aarondeep Basrai, Amal Thakarsey, Daniel Perez, Dipam Doshi, Edwin Kim, Henry Chang, Mike Abram, Oliver Hsu, Russell Yee, Sameer Rakholia, Tony Stricker, Tyler Hanson and Brother of the Year, Henry Chang. On June 19, the brothers of Pacific Grad and Gamma Nu embarked on a journey to Discovery Bay to take part in the annual luau at Ross Chang’s lakeside home. Pomona Grad

pomonagrad@kappapsi.org

With great pleasure, I would like to inform you that the Pomona Graduate chapter was chartered this past Saturday, June 19, 2010. The chartering ceremony and dinner were held at the Coco Palm Restaurant in Pomona, California. We had approximately 30 brothers (Pomona Grad, Epsilon Gamma, and LA Grad) in attendance as well as Grand Counselor Eric Gupta and Graduate Member-at-Large Latha Radhakrishnan. Opening remarks were made by Michelle Lau, regent-elect. She talked about how happy she was to finally charter Pomona Grad and some of the difficulties we faced while trying to get our graduate chapter started. It was great to see everyone’s hard work finally pay off. The National Officers talked about the duties and obligations of a graduate chapter, and then they presented the charter to Brother Lau. Brother Radhakrishnan then installed the new officers: Michelle Lau, regent; Thomas Bang, vice regent; Howard Umemoto, secretary/treasurer; Theresa Lin, historian; and Maximillian Jahng, chaplain. Michelle Lau and Marilyn Mayeda, who unfortunately could not get off work, were each presented with a recognition pin for their hard work getting Pomona Grad up and running. Letters of communication from Alpha chapter members Jason Milton (PIX Supervisor), Reese Corbala (PIX Satrap), Dean Pham (Pacific Graduate), Dany Kloth (SF Graduate

Van Nguyen (Epsilon Gamma regent) then talked about how she hoped EG and Pomona Grad would work together “synergistically” in the future. We then opened up the mic to anyone who wanted to say something. We heard from Ann Vu (EG’s very first graduate!), Chen I. Chen (provisional vice regent of Pomona Grad), Joanne Tuquero (first EG regent), and Matt Furukawa and Mark Sabatillo (Epsilon Gamma second vice regents 2009–2010 and 2010–2011, respectively; together better known as “Skittles” from our most recent Chapter Report). We then concluded the chartering ceremony/dinner. The food was delicious! The company was excellent! What more could you ask for? Wish you were all there to celebrate with us. —Theresa Lin

Awards were presented, a new slate of officers was installed, and friendships were made and renewed as the Providence Graduate chapter celebrated its 20th Annual Founders Day and Awards Banquet on Monday evening, April 26, 2010, at the Radisson Hotel in Warwick, Rhode Island. Each year Golden Mortar Awards are presented to members celebrating 50 years of membership in Kappa Psi and the PGC recipients this year were Brothers Peter James and John A Pagliarini, and Americo Richards, who was present to accept his award. Brother Louis S. Diorio was awarded the 2009 Community Service Award for his contributions to the Rhode Island area. Louis is not only active in

many aspects of pharmacy including APhA, but he also serves as a preceptor for the URI College of Pharmacy and is a Boy Scouts Troop leader. Anthony G. DelSignore was awarded the 2009 Graduate Brother of the Year for his service to the Fraternity. Anthony, who served as the PGC regent for two years, has graduated from Brown Medical School and is presently doing a residency in otolaryngology in New York City. Scholarships were also presented to three deserving undergraduates from Beta Epsilon. Clement Ng received the Dr. George E. Osbourne Memorial Award for his outstanding academic record; Andrew Bundeff received the Peter Feeney Memorial Award for his outstanding fraternal involvement; and Thomas Bertha was honored with the Dr. Norman A. Campbell Award for his outstanding professional involvement.

Additionally, the following chapter officers were installed: Fletcher Nehring, regent; Michael Ira Smith, vice regent; Dan Lefkowitz, secretary; John Grossomanides, treasurer; Karl Kehrle, historian; Michael Muller, chaplain; and Steve Edwards, athletic director. A memorial exercise was also held for the following brothers who passed away during the last year: Normal Cabral, Francis Kayatta, Adam Celestino, John R. Campoli, and Brian P. Russell. A moment of silence was observed to honor their memory. Unfortunately, severe weather interfered with the annual Graduate vs. Undergraduate softball game scheduled for Thursday, April 22, between Beta Epsilon and the PGC this year. However, the graduates look forward to avenging last year’s loss on the softball diamond next spring. —Karl Kehrle

South Dakota Grad

southdakotagrad@kappapsi.org

The spring meeting was held April 14 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Gary Van Riper and Sean Donahoe were elected Delegates, and Andrew Gillen Alternate Delegate, to Province VII spring conclave. There was discussion of a social event for the new P4 class to be held during their first or second rotations as well as a social event for the P3 brothers after classes start again in the fall. Discussion focused on how to get SD Grad brothers more involved with the grad and undergrad chapters. Suggestions included tailgating at SDSU football games, a community service project followed by a social event, an event at the South Dakota Pharmacists Association meeting in Chamberlain, South Dakota, and par-

ticipation in the GVR Open Golf Tournament with a social event to follow. Also discussed was the future of the aging Gamma Kappa chapter house in Brookings. A committee of grad brothers will work with the undergrad chapter to develop a plan. Elections were held and officers for the next two years are: Gary Van Riper, regent; Eric Kutscher, vice regent; Briana Schneider, secretary/ treasurer; Jerri Haak, chaplain; Brad Laible, sergeant at arms; and Andrew Gillen, historian.

St. Louis Grad

stlouisgrad@kappapsi.org

St. Louis Grad has had a busy summer as always. Many brothers made the trip up to Chicago to watch the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Chicago

Cubs. For those who couldn’t make the trip all the way to Chicago, there was plenty of baseball close to home as the Hamiltons hosted a barbecue at their home once again before the annual River City Rascals game (this was a free event for graduate brothers). Brothers also mingled with the collegiate chapter at the annual Float Trip down the Meramec River. Brothers are looking forward to the fall and supporting the collegiate chapter as they proactively change their pledging process. The rush period will now last throughout the entire semester with a concentrated two-week pledging period before the second semester starts. This will hopefully conflict less with school schedules of the brothers and pledges. Brothers will also offer pledges tutoring ses-

sions each week. Graduates are looking forward to getting involved as the rush period starts off at regent John Hamilton’s home for a Graduate/ Pledge casual social event on September 17. Grads can also get involved with their Kappa Psi families on Family Night, October 1. Graduates are looking forward to all of the pledging events in their revised form. The golf tournament and pig roast has been scheduled for Saturday, October 16, which is also during the rush period, allowing graduates another opportunity to meet the pledges. We hope to beat our record from last year and have more than 100 brothers this year. If you are interested in forming a team, contact Brother Hamilton. We would also like to congratulate all of the brothers who are getting married this year: Scott Placek and Courtney Hollenbeck, Matt Welch and Beth Neporadney, and Brother Shane Becker. Good luck in your new lives. If you would like to be on the St. Louis Graduate chapter mailing list or get involved in one of these or any of our other events, contact St. Louis Grad chapter regent John Hamilton at kappapsigrad@yahoo.com. —Melissa Hunt

Toledo Grad

toledograd@kappapsi.org

Toledo Grad has been staying busy in numerous ways. At the end of the Toledo school year, we helped welcome new pledges into Beta Lambda by enjoying a local Toledo favorite,

Tony Packo’s (made famous from M.A.S.H.). A few of our brothers made a challenge amongst ourselves to run the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, which contributes to several charities including the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, Thinking Beyond Borders (an AIDS study abroad program), as well as a local initiative to get middle school and high schoolers to lead more active lives. Congratulations to Brother Victor Granger for completing the half marathon and Brothers Eric Meister and Eric Geyer for completing the full marathon. Province IV was also gracious in welcoming Toledo Grad to their summer conclave where we had a lot of fun meeting many new brothers! We hope everyone is having a fun and safe summer and look forward to the upcoming school year. —Eric Geyer

Wisconsin Grad

wisconsingrad@kappapsi.org

The WI Graduate chapter is planning to hold our annual Brewer’s Game and Tailgate on July 25. Grads, students, and family members are invited to attend. We are also happy to announce the “revival” of our other annual event, the “Hacker’s” Open Golf Outing. This will be held August 29 at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. We are hoping for a good turnout at both events, especially our Hacker’s Open so we can continue to hold this event in the future.

Province III

The spring semester came and went in a flash with many events throughout the Province. Theta and Epsilon Delta held their annual charity golf tournaments this past April. They received great support, and the tournaments were very successful. Beta Xi celebrated the 30th anniversary of their signature Tunnel Party in April as well. The party brought in brothers from Virginia, South Carolina, and Maryland as well as the host state of North Carolina. It was a fun-filled evening of brotherhood that featured the infamous cardboard tunnel and the Joshua Long Band. Sigma and Delta Kappa chapters are in the process of working to establish a Kappa Psi chapter at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Province IV

The Delta Iota chapter hosted the Province IV summer 2010 conclave meeting in Tallahassee, Florida, this June. Plans for a continued successful year were put into motion, credit was given where credit was due, and our Brotherhood grew stronger than ever. Congratulations to Gamma Psi for winning the Best Chapter Report, Best Chapter in the Province, and the award for having the most brothers in attendance. Brother Michael Graubart presented two copies of The History of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, one of which was signed by the author, Dewey D. Garner, and given to Epsilon Eta to honor their continued growth as the newest collegiate

chapter in Province IV. The other book was presented to the Province IV Historian, Megan Brafford, for safekeeping for the Province. We have continued encouraging the growth of our collegiate chapters via chapter development seminars at Epsilon Eta, Delta Upsilon, and Gamma Sigma. Brothers Marvin Smith, Abe Duncan, and Buck Butler have played a tremendous role by conducting these seminars. To all graduates from our Province or those living in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, or the Bahamas, please go to our Web site: http://province4.org/ newsite/ and complete a Graduate Referral Form. This referral program also allows brothers relocating to the Province IV region direct contact with the appropriate graduate chapter. Province IV brothers have been able to strengthen their fraternal bonds by visiting other chapters within the Province and attending Chi’s 100th anniversary in Chicago. Building relationships with others outside our region has proved to encourage our own to look at the bigger picture of Kappa Psi while still being thankful for the strong ties we have here in Province IV. —Megan Brafford

As a Province, we enjoyed dinner and dancing with all of our brothers in attendance, and we entertained each other with stories from the last time we were all able to get together. The meeting itself was a busy one with it being election time. We were able to quickly move through each position and elect a new Executive Committee to represent Province IX as we prepare for GCC in San Francisco during August 2011. The newly elected committee members are Reese Corbala as Satrap, Breanna Bernarducci as Vice Satrap, Carly Paoli as Secretary/Treasurer, Christine Cooper as Historian, Jesse Wisniewski as Chaplain, and Ryan Moore as the Immediate Past Satrap. Dr. Leonard Naeger: beyond degrees, lectures, or teaching, his greatest trophies are the hundreds of lives that he has touched.
