The Spirit of Giving

David E. Maszkiewicz

As Kappa Psi brothers, we have much to be thankful for. As collegians, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue higher education in the profession of pharmacy. As graduates, we are fortunate to be able to serve in a profession that not only allows us to provide for our families, but to serve our fellow man. Our blessings help us make a difference in the lives of others. I believe that is something we must always remember: We can all make a difference. Is there anything more rewarding than seeing the smiles of appreciation as we reach out to others with an open hand of friendship and help? It may be through food drives, blood pressure screenings, toy and clothing drives, or by visiting and assisting at senior citizen homes or orphanages. Never underestimate your power to bring joy and light into the lives of others who so desperately need it. Your efforts matter and make a difference. In that spirit of giving, I want to take a moment to talk to you about our 2006–07 National Philanthropic Project, the Hearts and Crafts Quilt to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. This project is featured on page 4 of this issue of THE MASK. The Hearts and Crafts Quilt is the first National Philanthropic Project since the 2001 Cross Country Bike Ride sponsored by Gamma Eta chapter, Craig Johnston, and Province X. With support from our chapters and Provinces, we will make this year’s project just as successful. Our goals are large but so are our hearts. I would love to see 100 percent of our chapters and Provinces submit squares for the quilt. Chapters are welcome to submit multiple squares. As of this writing, Delta Becky Farenbrueck shows off the Hearts and Crafts Quilt at the APhA booth. Rho has already committed to four! Graduates and ANY individual or group of individuals can submit quilt squares at $100 per square. All donations are tax deductible. The quilt project is being coordinated by Province II, the National Philanthropic Committee, and with assistance from the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. Help make a difference during this shining moment in Kappa Psi history! Our efforts will not only be measured by a monetary donation, but by a living symbol in fabric as our Fraternity comes together to reach a common goal and help MS sufferers, one patch at a time. Your participation and spirit of giving will make all the difference! Proud to be Your Brother

David E. Maszkiewicz Grand Regent 2005–2007

Giving: Are You Doing Your Part? As I sit here writing this piece in my den during the holiday season, I realize you will not read my words until sometime in February. I begin to change my thoughts but then realize that what the holiday season is all about is what should exist in each of us all year long: a commitment to giving. Giving is the right thing to do and is something we should strive to do each day of the year. You are or will soon be in the top 1 percent of all wage earners in the world. Think about that. You are entering a world that few people enter, and you have or will have entered it at a young age. This entrance can be a challenge, because Several brothers supported the Foundation and to whom much is given, much is its programs through the annual golf tournament. demanded. Your time, resources, Shown here are (L-R) Dr. Norman Campbell, John energy and money will always be in Grossomanides, Mike Sherry, and Dean Donald demand. But giving is not always Letendre (see full story on page 15). about money. We must remember the sacrifices of those who came before us. These individuals were also challenged to give back to those who would follow in their footsteps. In giving back they sacrificed their time, talents, and resources so we could benefit today. Our country’s pioneers and the pioneers within our profession gave much more than we are currently asked to give. Some gave their time and money while others gave their talents and resources. Some even gave their lives so we could be at this point in time. While most of us will not be asked to give our lives, other things can be given that can mean just as much to those less fortunate. When we give time to a free clinic, volunteer at a soup kitchen, help with a church building project, conduct a brown bag clinic, give monetarily to a worthy cause, or contribute to any number of worthy causes that benefit others, we give some of what our forefathers gave: themselves. The success we enjoy today is partly due to our own hard work, but it is also due to the countless number of people in our profession and country who came before us. Do we realize just how much we are given? More importantly, do we realize how much is required or even expected to be given back to leave something for future generations? I hope we all realize that expectation and give of ourselves each day, not just during the holiday season. Fraternally, Johnny Winter 2007

reetings from the National Philanthropic Committee! This is an exciting year for Kappa Psi because it is the first time in seven years that brothers have come together to raise funds for a common cause. With 72 collegiate and 43 Graduate chapters across the United States and Canada, and with more than 46,000 brothers, we have the potential to truly make a difference. It is for this reason that the Hearts and Crafts Quilt project was designed. The idea for the Hearts and Crafts Quilt was coined as a Province project at the fall 2005 Province II assembly. However, once the idea was presented at the spring 2006 assembly with a $1,000 donation from the Province, it was soon adopted as the Official National Philanthropic Project of Kappa Psi. In the words of Grand Regent Dave Maszkiewicz, the project will allow Kappa Psi to “See the Possibilities.

G

Since then, the quilt has traveled to Provinces II, III, and IV, as well as to ASHP, and was presented in Provinces VIII and IX. Those who had the opportunity to see the quilt were awestruck at the potential for this project: Our great Fraternity has the opportunity to make a difference with a financial contribution to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, and each brother can feel a great sense of pride when the quilt is completed. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation to benefit those suffering with MS. The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation is a predominantly service-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to ensure the best quality of life for those coping with MS. The foundation accomplishes this in the following ways: by providing comprehensive support and educational programs; by supporting research into the cause and cure of MS; by

Hearts and Crafts

investigating various medical and complementary treatment options; and by helping “make a brighter tomorrow” with home health care grants, assistive technology, complementary and alternative medicine, and Brighter Tomorrow Grants, just to name a few. This is a great foundation, and the funds raised through the quilt project will go directly to the project of our choice to help empower MS sufferers. Squares submitted by chapters and brothers will be assembled into one large quilt, which will be displayed at the 53rd Grand Council Convention in Boston. This “coming together” will symbolize Kappa Psi in that our Brotherhood is a comprehensive display of unique personalities that come together to form a flawless whole. Our goal for the quilt project is to raise $40,000 nationally, which can be viewed as $4,000 per Province and $4,000 from individual donations. Each square costs $100. I am asking each chapter to donate one square so 100 percent of our chapters can be represented on the quilt. Forty thousand dollars may seem like a lot, but that’s only 400 squares. With 115 chapter squares, our goal no longer seems far fetched. Several chapters have donated more than one square, which is amazing! Many of the squares thus far include signatures of those who participated in the project at the chapter and Province level. Each quilt square is a 24-by-24 piece of fabric with a 22-by-22 center area, which contains the design. The extra 1 inch on each side is for sewing purposes. The quilt will have five squares vertically and reach a height of 9 feet. If we reach our goal of 400 squares, the quilt will run horizontally 80 squares, or 146 feet. As a chapter incentive from the Central Office, there will be bonus points on the Chapter of the Year form for those chapters that participate. Graduate brothers, your donation is tax deductible when made payable to The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. The deadline for quilt square and monetary donations is June 30, 2007. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes, made by Will Henry: “Fools live to regret their words, wise men to regret their silence.” This is not a time to be silent, but a time to stand strong and speak forcefully with a square from your chapter as we come together for a common cause. The Hearts and Crafts Quilt Project Designing your Square Let your mind wander! Design a square that is unique to you as an individual brother or to your chapter as a whole. Draw, stitch, or add buttons, ribbons, or photos to your square to make it your own. While designing and creating your square, remember that the quilt will travel here, there, and everywhere, so it’s important to consider the type and durability of your materials.

Quilt Square Dimensions Each square is 24 square inches, with 22 square inches available for your design. A 1-inch border must be left around the perimeter of the square so they can be sewn together. Precut and marked squares are available for purchase. Each square should be individualized, however, so go ahead and use an old T-shirt, sheet, or buy a piece of colorful fabric.

Design Ideas for the Not So Crafty Fabric Ideas: Use an old T-shirt, sweatshirt, blanket, sheet, or scraps of fabric. Keep in mind the durability of the material. Appliqué: Use letters, buttons, ribbons, or other materials to personalize your square. Avoid using glue to attach these items to your square since glue won’t withstand the test of time. Stencils: For those of you without steady hands, use a stencil to help create your design. Simply trace the stencil and fill it in with either fabric paint or permanent marker. Avoid the use of puff paint, which will not withstand the test of time and may ruin other squares when the quilt is folded. Paint: Paint your design onto the square with fabric-friendly paints. Textile paint, fast-drying dye, and spray paint are your best options. Avoid puff paints. Photos: You can include photos on your square using two different methods. The best option is to transfer the picture onto an ironon transfer. You can then easily iron the pictures onto 100 percent cotton fabric and sew them on your square. If you’re feeling extra crafty, place your photos in a vinyl photo pocket and sew the pocket onto your square. When using this method, be careful with the placement of the photos on your square to prevent them from being bent when the square is folded.

Where to Shop Any craft store should have all of the supplies you need to complete your square. Consider visiting AC Moore, Michael’s, and JoAnn Fabrics. Remember… be creative and have fun! You are helping raise money for a wonderful cause!

Remembrances

Remembrances This series of articles, written by Past National Officers of the Fraternity, will appear frequently. The purpose of this series is to let the members of Kappa Psi see what the Fraternity was like when some of our past officers were in leadership roles. I hope this is an enjoyable trip down memory lane. —Johnny Porter, Editor of THE MASK

Kappa Psi is for Life. . . More Than Just a Slogan

E

ditor Porter invited me to share some thoughts and highlights of my career in Kappa Psi, an assignment that seemed on its face to be a relatively simple task. Not so! Where does one begin? What is significant enough to warrant chronicling? What would be meaningful to the collegiate and graduate brothers who comprise my audience? Having been unable to answer satisfactorily any of these questions for myself, let me offer some global comments followed by some experiences that may influence how each of us might approach our individual and collective roles as brothers of Kappa Psi. I have been blessed with Kappa Psi membership for more than half a century; I have attended 20 Grand Council Conventions and more Province meetings and chapter functions than I could count if I remembered them all. I was elected Grand Historian, Second Grand Vice Regent, First Grand Regent, Grand Regent, and I was President of the Foundation—all of this while meeting and interacting with thousands of the most wonderful and enjoyable students and professional colleagues imaginable. My “Kappa Psi experience” began in 1953 when I was rushed at Beta Epsilon,

subsequently pledged, and initiated in May 1954, 52+ years ago. Two among many Beta Epsilon collegians who guided my pathway to initiation are the late Dr. Ron Gautieri, who was a longtime Grand Council Deputy at Beta Omega chapter, and Dr. Herb Carlin, past president of APhA and ASHP. During my tenure as a collegian, I helped initiate Dr. Paul Pierpaoli, another ASHP past president. I was privileged to serve Beta Epsilon as historian and then regent. During my collegiate career, my chapter was fortunate to have hosted then Grand

Regent Nicholas W. Fenney (’53–’55) on a chapter visitation. As historian, I recall the panic surrounding my taking publishable photos of our guest for submission to THE MASK. The panic gave way to pride when I saw them in print, perhaps the first tangible evidence that I was part of something big. The national scope of our Order was demonstrated to me several years later when I enrolled in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, academic home of Beta Psi. During my first day as a teaching assistant in a dispensing lab, a brother noted the Greek letters on my class ring and identified himself. His first question was, “Are you married?” Having just arrived in the Midwest from Rhode Island, I was taken aback by what seemed like an odd question or custom. But this was a brother and I heard him out. When I responded in the affirmative, he immediately asked if my wife and I would consider being chaperones for parties at the Beta Psi house. In those days, married couples were required to supervise events on campus, and we were pleased to accommodate the chapter members. Brother John McCarthy (Beta Delta), his wife, and my wife and I were regular participants in these events. In the early 1960s I joined the faculty at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and began interacting with the brothers of Mu chapter, where I soon became Grand Council Deputy. During that time period, I was privileged to share an office with an emeritus professor who visited campus only infrequently in his retirement. (I never thought then that this would be my status

today.) That gentleman was Past Grand Regent Heber W. Youngken Sr. (’37–’41). On the days he did appear on campus, I was fortunate to learn so much of the history of our Fraternity, which doesn’t appear in the two wonderful works we have by Eby and Garner. The love and respect Brother Youngken maintained more than two decades after his service to Kappa Psi was touching and had a profound influence on my career. With his urging and that of others, I offered my name in nomination for Grand Historian at the Atlanta GCC in 1963, returning home empty-handed. The Mu chapter delegation to that meeting was headed by Regent Donald G. Floriddia, who later served as my Executive Secretary. He managed my successful campaign for the same office in 1965 in San Francisco. Brother Floriddia’s work as longtime GCD at Gamma Nu is legendary. My next close encounter with a Past Grand Regent occurred at that same GCC. Immediately following my election as Grand Historian, Dr. Frank H. Eby (’46–’53) invited me to his and Mrs. Eby’s hotel room for a visit prior to the closing banquet at which officers were to be installed. He presented me with his Grand Officer lapel pin after extracting from me the promise to continue working toward the goal of Grand Regent. In all candor, on that evening, being Grand Regent was the furthest thing from my mind, but I made the pledge. Thankfully, I was able to fulfill my promise. In March 1980, nearly 15 years later, I was able to return Dr. Eby’s pin to him during Beta Omega’s 50th anniversary celebration.

As President of the Kappa Psi Foundation, Dr. Campbell handed hundreds of scholarships to fellow brothers.

While these are personal vignettes, they serve as examples of how knowingly, or unknowingly, each one of us can influence the Fraternity experience of another brother, creating a lifelong bond. Don’t underestimate how important your assistance or counsel to a brother can be. Colleagues, former employers, professors, students, and brothers whom I have met professionally and in Fraternity activities Winter 2007

have all been an important part of my life, which is Kappa Psi. The Fraternity has changed over the more than one-half century portrayed in these comments. The Executive Committee is smaller, the Constitution was modified to permit female members, the Executive Office is professionally staffed, etc. But the basic tenets of Kappa Psi remain the same. Be true to them for life!

Peanut Gallery Invades Italy By Christy Askew and Becky Fahrenbruch

In September, 12 Kappa Psi brothers (Christy Askew, Dawn Erdman, Jami Schell, Brian Reisetter, Tracy Anderson Haag, Chrisann Rauzi, Adam and Shauna Gregg, Jeff and Becky Fahrenbruch, Jennifer Friehe, and Sandy Johnson) met in Florence, Italy, after the culmination of a year and a half of planning. During the Graduate Development Committee (aka The Peanut Gallery) meeting at our spring 2005 Province meeting, Brian Reisetter suggested that we plan a group trip during the off GCC years. Several suggestions were discussed but enthusiasm was great for Tuscany. As a group we committed to planning Kappa Psi events during a four-day period in Florence, Italy. Plans started slowly with basic information being given to brothers so they could start planning for the trip. As 2006 approached, excitement built and 17 brothers, family members, and friends (Mary Schell, Scott Given, Vicky Halvorson, Mark Rauzi, and Marie Erdman) made the trip to Italy. Many brothers extended their trip before and after Florence with stays in Rome, Venice, the Cinque Terre (Italian Rivera), Milan, Sicily, London, and Munich. Most of our group arrived on Tuesday, September 19. We met for the first time for dinner at Trattoria Za-Za, a traditional-style Tuscan restaurant popular with local Florentines. It was wonderful to see everyone together and hear about their adventures so far. During our first full day in Florence we started at one of the most popular sights in town, the Uffizi Gallery. The museum houses a collection of the greatest Italian paintings anywhere, with works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo. That afternoon our group had reservations at the Accademia to see Michelangelo’s David. Brothers took the rest of the afternoon to wander the San Lorenzo market and shop, and also to see Santa Croce Church. This 14th century church has tombs of great Florentines, Galileo, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and a memorial to Dante.

Kappa Psi brothers rub the Florence Wart Hog in hopes of a return to the city someday.

Kappa Psi brothers visit the Winery in the Tuscany Region.

We met that evening at Open Bar, a wine bar and restaurant overlooking the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio, Florence’s famous bridge with its gold and silver shops. We did the traditional Italian-style, multicourse, three-hour dinner. This first

dinner with the entire group was a highlight of the trip for many. Thursday started early with a trip to the Chianti region. We visited the towns of Radda and Greve and two vineyards. The countryside was gorgeous and the stops in

two small Tuscan villages were a great break from the bustle of Florence. After a full day of touring we went causal for dinner at Yellow Bar, with homemade pasta and some of the best pizza in Florence. Friday offered a variety of diversions. Some members of the group took a day trip to Pisa and climbed the Leaning Tower. Others choose to sleep in and stayed around Florence to visit the Bargello sculpture museum, the Medici Chapels with numerous statues by Michelangelo, San Miniato church, Piazzale Michelangelo with a view overlooking the city, and Pitti Palace and its Boboli Gardens. Several brothers also braved the 463 stairs to the top of the Duomo, Santa Maria del Fiore, the Gothic church in the center of Florence. Our group’s Friday evening plans started with an antipasti, cheese, and wine buffet at one of the apartments rented by some brothers. Without previous reservations we found a restaurant later that evening that could seat 17 for dinner and had our final meal together. Saturday saw our group head their separate ways, some for other destinations in Italy. A group of eight had an opportunity to attend a cooking class and learn to make an authentic Italian meal. While we often see each other at Province meetings and GCC, this trip offered a truly unforgettable experience and provided many memories that we will always cherish.

Webmaster Craig Burkin

Last October, the Executive Committee appointed Craig Burkin as the webmaster for the Kappa Psi international website. Craig is a January 2001 initiate of Xi chapter and graduated from The Ohio State University in 2003. Craig is currently the Province V vice satrap and has served as historian and webmaster for Xi. He also served as webmaster for Province V from 2003–05 and has served on the national OIT Committee since 2005. Craig has attended the last three GCCs and assisted Cameron Van Dyke with the 52nd GCC slideshow. Craig would like to thank Brother E. Ben Welch for all of his assistance and advice during the transition period. As you may realize, the Kappa Psi website offers numerous resources to brothers. Along with various list serves, the contact information and officers for each chapter and Province are listed. When new officers are elected, please take a moment to complete the online website forms. This will update both the Central Office and the website, whereas information from snail-mailed paper forms to the Central Office will usually not appear on the website. Your diligence in this matter will ensure our website remains a valuable tool for the entire Fraternity. A new chat room feature was added to the website, which can be used by committees to hold online discussions, etc. The chat room offers the ability to create individual, password-protected rooms separate from the main chat room. Another feature is that the text may be “copied and pasted,” which makes taking minutes easier. That feature is disabled in the chat rooms of Yahoo Groups. Please note that the chat room software requires you to create a user account before logging in, but that’s a very simple process. As you may have noticed, some brothers now have Kappa Psi e-mail addresses. These addresses are available to anyone who wants one and have the same features as the chapter e-mail accounts. Any KY e-mail account can forward its mail to a more frequently used address, and you also can configure Microsoft Outlook and most e-mail software to retrieve your KY e-mail, eliminating the need to go through the website. Web-based e-mail services like Yahoo and Gmail may be configured to retrieve your Kappa Psi e-mail as well. Free website hosting is also available to any chapter or Province through the international website. Currently, Province IX and four chapters are using this. Please click on “Communications” and then “Website Hosting” on the website main menu for further details. These features and more may be found on the Kappa Psi website. Please contact the webmaster for more information or with questions. Winter 2007

Epsilon would like to welcome our nine new brothers and congratulate them for being an excellent pledge class: Laura Brinster (Carlson), Craig Glienke, Rachel Goodwin, Yajing Li, Kelly Millner, Eddu Oparie-Addoh, Mike Schroeder, Therese Swan, and Alison Wagner. They were enthusiastic pledges, cooked us a great meal, and performed a hilarious skit for initiation. We had 18 brothers travel to North Dakota for the Province VIII fall conclave. We had a great time dressing up as members of various high school cliques and as our favorite childhood TV characters. Our Province meetings are a great time to learn about other chapters and get ideas of how to better our own. Epsilon is hosting the spring conclave for Province VIII March 30–April 1. We have been busy planning and fund raising for this

with hay rides, a petting zoo, and pig races. Luckily there was lots of sunshine, a rarity in Minnesota this late in the year. Our philanthropy projects have been keeping us busy as well. We

Fall semester was very busy for Theta chapter. Our first project was a Richmond Survival Guide to welcome first-year pharmacy school students. They were very grateful for a tour of the hot spots in Richmond. Our next project was the Kappa Psi annual putt-putt tournament. We had 10 teams of four people compete for prizes. Our first place winners received movie tickets and our last place finishers won a free round of putt-putt so the team can improve its game. Our next project was our annual chili cook-off. Many students from the MCV School of Pharmacy, as well as faculty and alumni, came out to sample some great-tasting chili. Bottled water and soda were

also provided to extinguish any fires that stemmed from spicy chili consumption. Guest judges were invited to sample chili and collectively decide the winners for the Judges’ Favorite, Best Presentation, and Spiciest Chili categories. Members of the panel included Brother Victor Yanchick, dean of the MCV School of Pharmacy; Brother Phil Morris (MCV P’85), CVS Pharmacy District 3 pharmacy supervisor; and Brother Brandon Jennings (MCV P’06), pharmacy practice resident. Eight contestants participated in the event, and trophies and prizes were awarded for Judges’ Favorite, Crowd Favorite, Best Presentation, and Spiciest Chili. The Judges’

Favorite award winner received $50; the Crowd Favorite award winner received a “technology pack,” which included a 256MB Sandisk® Cruzer™ USB Flash Memory Key, iPod™-style headphones, and a 30pack spindle of CD-R data disks. The Best Presentation and Spiciest Chili award winners received $20 gift cards to Hams and Ruby Tuesday, respectively. Brother Mike Davis (P-3) showed us what real chili is supposed to be and ended up winning Judges’ Favorite and Crowd Favorite. Allison Lynch (P-1) had the best table decorations, giving her the nod for Best Presentation. Adrian Wilson’s (P-1) recipe was deemed Spiciest Chili for the night.

Winter 2007

The chili cook-off was very successful and we look forward to hosting it again next year. A hearty thanks goes to CVS, Walgreen’s, Hams, and Ruby Tuesday for contributing to this year’s event. We also held a financial management event where we helped students prepare for the future by understanding the basics of investing. Ron Stack of Stack Financial helped take the confusion out of investing, managing risk, preparing for retirement, and preserving wealth. His primary goal was to teach students how investing can help them work toward their financial objectives as they make sound financial decisions. Our final project was the start of the Ronald McDonald Pull Tab Program. In this program, students help the Ronald McDonald House by pulling tabs from aluminum cans and donating them for recycling. The money from the recycled tabs helps purchase cleaning supplies, food for the family food pantry, and provides van transportation for the families. —Lawrence Lopez

Mu

Massachusetts College of Pharmacy Founded 3/4/1907 SGA Office c/o Kappa Psi 179 Longwood Avenue Boston, MA 02115

Although winter seems to bring about the gripping frost and dark, unending nights for those of us in the Northeast, brothers at Mu have found ways to further stoke the fire of professionalism and brotherhood. Being kept indoors hasn’t fettered our desire to get outside and promote good practices, industry, and high ideals. Our leukemia fundraiser continues to be successful with a lottery ticket-like spin that provides people an entertaining

Psi’s Redneck NASCAR fans with the Pit Crew girls for the Kappa Psi Halloween party. way to contribute. Furthermore, for our own school community, we held drop-in tutoring for all subjects—with the gracious volunteering of all ages of brothers. Recently we held a hold ’em poker tournament that attracted many underground poker athletes from the college of pharmacy. And in an effort to promote international poverty awareness, more than 35 Mu brothers participated in the Oxfam Hunger Banquet (which was less a banquet than an eyeopener). We would also like to thank the brothers of Beta Epsilon for graciously hosting the Province I meeting. Beyond this catalogue of activities, Mu brothers have fallen into the groove and routine of our rigor-

ous academic program here in Boston. Every day there seems to be a greater appreciation of brotherhood among us as we realize that

our reunion as a collective oscillates throughout the year and cycles as do the seasons. Especially in this time, a time when we huddle together with our “other” families, Mu brothers are constantly realizing the importance of our family in brotherhood. The emotional, intellectual, and social resources we gain from one another are beyond price. Some say that winter in the Northeast is death incarnate. The naked trees whistle as the grass yellows, and yet we are not hesitant to accept that theory. As our curriculum transitioned out of the first semester, we accepted the erasure of any of the mistakes (petty or drastic) of the first half of the year and look forward to the spring for renewal and rebirth. And we can do nothing but hope the same for the rest of you. —Soham Bhatt

dran created a Kappa Psi Retreat. The goal of the retreat was to work toward a true brotherhood and to promote bonding between all of the pharmacy classes. During the retreat, brothers from each year gave speeches on the future of Kappa Psi and on what Kappa Psi means to them. In addition, brothers played games to learn more about each other and the Fraternity. Sigma had a fantastic time at the Christmas party held at the home of third-year brother Mathilda Fienkeng. Community service chair Sarah Olszewski organized a successful Toys for Tots toy drive. Our brothers have had high levels of achievement. Seventeen brothers received SGA leadership awards. Beta Gamma officially hit the jackpot! Last quarter we enticed 75 pledges into wanting to become part of the Kappa Psi family, which is double the amount of last year’s efforts. Words cannot express how pleased we are with the outcome. Honorable mentions go out to rush coordinators Evan Clemens and Megan Haycock for doing a superb job and going above and beyond the required workload. UCSF’s annual school of pharmacy homecoming took many Kappa Psi alumni on a walk down memory lane. Inquiries about the chapter’s recent progress and upcoming changes spurred excitement for future growth of the Fraternity and profession. This event was followed by a successful Internship Night, which fostered many new networking opportunities and job placements for the pledges. Other chapter events included a bake sale that raised $250, Clinical Pharmacy cram night tutoring sessions, and a beach cleanup and bonfire that unified current brothers and new pledges in getting to know one another. We are also delighted to take on the new Hearts and

Crafts project and implement an alumni mentorship program to increase ties between past and present Kappa Psi brothers. Last but not least, we are extremely honored to host the Province meeting this spring. Beta Epsilon is proud to welcome 19 new brothers into the Fraternity: Thomas Bertha, Joe Russell, Scott Johnson, Ben Weinstein, Jeremy Finck, Willy Cousins, Diamond Lloyd, David Blanchette, Alex Baratz, Jason Carvalho, Justin Ellison, Clem Ng, Justin Gregoire, Andrew Sumner, Greg Lipp, Brian Kurt, Noah Haroian, Rayon Seng, and Brett Lareau. Everyone in the pledge class worked extremely hard to become brothers, and Beta Epsilon is delighted to have these young men as part of our Fraternity. We hosted the Province I fall meeting on October 28. It was nice to meet brothers from nearby chapters and to catch up on old times with graduate brothers. We discussed recent events, this summer’s GCC, and planned the next Province I meeting for March. Brother Brian MacDonald and Graduate Brother Matthew LaCroix attended the Province VIII meeting in the fall and shared their experiences with all of the Province I brothers in attendance. Thirteen brothers got decked out in tuxedos to be in charge of the silent auction tables at Benefest 2006, “A Red Carpet Affair,” which helped Special Olympics Rhode Island. This was the second year we volunteered at this fantastic event, and it’s something we plan to do every year there is a benefit dinner. raised more than $2,300 for the event. We have already started raising money for the URI Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society, which will take place April 27–28, 2007. Our chapter has been the top fund-raising team for the past two years, and we plan to raise even more money than we have in the past. Brother Ron Hammond led the most successful fund-raiser in Beta Epsilon’s recent history. Ron created a new URI College of Pharmacy logo, and our chapter sold T-shirts, shorts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, and baseball caps with the new insignia. We are running this fund-raiser for the rest of the academic year and will also sell this merchandise at GCC. Our annual pledge vs. brothers football game was held November 18. The brothers were, of course, triumphant over the pledges with a score of 42–35. The pledges certainly put up a fight this year as the brothers only won by one touchdown in overtime. Several brothers were of great help to the URI College of Pharmacy as it campaigned for a $65 million bond for a new college to be built. Brothers Chris Morrison, Brian MacDonald, and Patrick Dougherty marched in a

parade to promote the bond proposal. Many brothers campaigned at a business expo at URI to help spread the word about the new college. Brian MacDonald was even on the local news for addressing the public about the bond issue. Finally, on November 7, brothers and pledges teamed up to campaign for “Vote Yes on 4” at polling locations throughout the state. The bond was approved by 62 percent of Rhode Islanders, meaning that a new, state-of-the-art college of pharmacy will be built at URI in the coming years. Our flag football team dominated the tournament this past semester, making it all the way to the championship round. We’re looking forward to once again being the No. 1 team for intramural basketball this semester. Of course, Beta Epsilon had time for social activities as well. Brothers made many strikes at a bowling social with the local Lambda Kappa Sigma chapter in early November. Our annual formal dance with LKS was on December 8. Everyone who attended had a great time, and we’re looking forward to the semiformal in May. Congratulations are in order for some of our brothers. Several Beta Epsilons flew to Anaheim in early

Continuing with the holiday spirit, chaplain Christina Mazur organized a Giving Tree to provide gifts to those who are less fortunate. Brothers also began volunteering at a local Rite Aid, screening patients’ blood pressures and answering their medication-related questions. Beta Lambda chapter was busy in the fall with our pledge season, philanthropy events, and social events. Our 13 pledges were initiated on December 2, which is a large number for our chapter. Our biggest social and philanthropic event for the fall was our annual Halloween party. This year we had more than 250 guests, and we asked each guest to bring two canned goods. We donated the 500plus canned goods to a local food shelter. Another philanthropic event that we participated in was the Relay For Life, which is an overnight event that raises money for cancer research. Overall, our chapter raised $150 for the cause. As a fall fund-raising activity, pledges and actives worked the concession stand at a Toledo home football game. This event was a good way for the pledges to get to know the actives better. Another notable event was that Grand Ritualist Andy Frasco and National

During fall semester we also sent brothers in small groups to talk to elementary school students about the dangers of poisons and how to avoid them. We did these so-called “Pinky Presentations as part of a partnership with the Nebraska Regional Poison Center. The presentations end with a brother dressing as a bright pink elephant named Pinky to further discuss poisons with the children. As a chapter we adopted a family with five children for the holiday season. We were excited to have the opportunity to give back to our community and to feel the joy of helping others who are less fortunate. We also had other opportunities to help our community through our work at the Ronald McDonald House and our efforts on our adopted highway. We recently held a two-week-long class competition to collect food for the local food bank, Northwest Harvest. This has become a tradition during the past couple of years and we raised a good amount of food, as expected. The class of 2008 continued its winning streak in this event by collecting the most food, much to the dismay of my fellow members of the class of 2009. The brothers of Beta Rho would like to thank Dr. Noel Wilkin, Dr. David McCaffrey, and Dr. John Mathews. Each of these professors made the night even more special by singing a song at our party. Dr. Wilkin made his performance even more memorable by dedicating his song to his wife, who was also in attendance. Even though many of our professors attended, these three were the only ones brave enough to take the microphone. We would also like to thank Dr. Leo Torres for providing the music for this event. A few weeks later, both the actives and the pledges got together for a pumpkin-carving contest and potluck dinner. Brothers are also planning an iceskating and skiing trip this winter. At the end of the semester, we hosted a holiday party at our fraternity house and invited the dean and associate dean of students to tour our house and celebrate the season. The evening included making gingerbread houses, decorating the tree, enjoying holiday treats, and wrapping gifts. We wrapped gifts

for a family of three that we adopted through the Salvation Army. In order to raise money for the cause, we sold “Get Out of Dressing-Up Free” coupons to classmates so they didn’t have to dress up during their final week of pharmacotherapy laboratory. We organize this coupon fund-raiser each semester to raise money for charity, and this activity proves to be a successful way to get the school involved in our cause. —Erin Seruga —Kelly Carpenter

We are also planning our annual hat and mitten drive with all items collected going to the Lydia House (a homeless shelter for mothers and children). In January we had Penny Wars between the classes to raise money for Campfire kids. We have also been working hard to get everything organized for our 10th annual Hoops-4-Healing 3-on-3 basketball tournament. This is our chapter’s most extensive philanthropy. The money raised will go to Camp Floyd Rodgers, which is a camp for children with diabetes. We’ve also had a great time socially. In October we went bowling and had our pledge retreat, and recently, we had our initiation party with a graffiti theme. All events had a great turnout, and it was a great way to get to know all of our brothers. —Shelley Czerniak

Three brothers received special recognition from our GCD, Dr. Peter M. Brody Jr., for all of their hard work in planning the weekend and making sure things ran as smooth as possible. A big thanks goes out to our Midyear Committee chair, Quynh Bui; our treasurer, Jamie Fisher; and our regent, Jordan Csati. We appreciate all the time you spent making this Midyear a success! State of the Fraternity 2006 Each chapter, Province, and Executive Committee member was provided with the Profit and Loss (budgetary vs. actual) and Assets and Liabilities statements for the fiscal year ending 30 September, 2006. This was provided to all chapters in good standing, according to the Constitution (Bylaw VIII 096 Section 2). A summary of these statements is provided below as a declaration of the state of the Fraternity. Our total income was Scott F. Long, R.Ph., Ph.D. greater than projected for Executive Director the past year. Although alumni giving was down, dues paid by collegiate chapters and the number of new initiates was greater than anticipated. During the past year, some unforeseen expenses were incurred, including additional purchases of jewelry and the printing of rituals, constitutions, and pledge manuals because the supply of each of these at the Central Office was depleted. Additionally, a new display board for the ASHP and APhA meetings was purchased. Finally, MASK costs remained steady and within the budgetary guidelines. By the Assets & Liabilities Statement, the bottom line is that the Fraternity is in great financial shape with more than $92,000 in assets (cash, CD, money market, inventory, and office) and the only liabilities being those incurred as part of the Fraternity’s normal operating expenses. The Central Office has no outstanding debts. If you have any questions, please contact me or the Central Office. Fraternally Yours, Scott F. Long, R.Ph., Ph.D. Executive Director

Gamma Iota continues its fundraising activities by selling Kappa Psi sweatshirts, as well as tickets to a Buffalo Sabres hockey game, which is an annual joint event with our graduate brothers. We sold candy grams for students and faculty this year, but this event is always more about spreading holiday cheer and gaining good Kappa Psi publicity rather than making profits for the chapter.

Our second vice regent and community service chair has been doing a great job keeping up with our annual community service projects, as well as introducing some new events. Brothers still make regular trips to the Ronald McDonald House to participate in the Cooks for Kids program, and we collect yogurt lids to help raise money to fight breast cancer; we also collect pop tabs as a fund-raiser. We plan to create a Gamma Iota

square to contribute to the Kappa Psi quilt for multiple sclerosis as part of the National Philanthropy Project. Our holiday events included a hat and mitten drive to benefit a local shelter, collecting money to participate in the pharmacy department’s Adopt-a-Family project to provide Christmas gifts for local needy families, and our big event to close out the year, the annual Toys For Tots toy drive and holiday potluck party. On top of all of our other responsibilities as students, brothers, and pharmacy interns, Gamma Iota is looking to organize a winter tubing event with all the brothers to spend some quality time together and have some fun in the snow. And finally, brothers are planning to designate the first Tuesday of each month as Kappa Psi letters day, where all brothers will wear their letters at school to show our unity and pride in our Fraternity. —Stacy Reed

Brothers trekked up to Fargo for the Province VIII fall conclave. We would like to congratulate and thank Beta Sigma for hosting a great conclave. The brothers of Gamma Kappa hosted an all-pharmacy Thanksgiving potluck in Sioux Falls. Full bellies and many laughs were had by all who attended. Traditionally, I am strictly a turkey eater on Thanksgiving, but Brother Evert Olsen won me over with his juicy ham. In at close second was Brother Erin Zempel’s burnt pumpkin pie! Other social events included a paintball night where brothers ducked and dodged enemy fire. Everyone had a blast. Highway cleanup for the fall semester went great and was completed in what some call record time. Everyone was eager to lend a helping hand to clean up Highway 14 east of Brookings. Brothers combed the three-mile stretch of highway on a gorgeous fall day. The Penny War has begun; the class competition pits the P1 class vs. the P2 class. Placing pennies in your jar gives you points, whereas putting silver coins in your opponent’s subtracts their points. Fund raising has begun for the 2007 Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon. Gamma Kappa has made a team and will take part in this year’s event on February 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Along with dancing there will be games, iceskating, and hanging out with the children. Fund raising for fall semester included doing SDSU College of Pharmacy sweatshirts, hooded sweater shirts, and fleece zip-up jackets. Aside from studying, Gamma Nu brothers know how to enjoy themselves and embrace the strong brotherhood of our Fraternity. In addition to the house renovations and brother retreat earlier in the semester, our annual Halloween Havoc was successful with more than 200 attendees. Gamma Nu was extremely active in the community with brothers participating in such events as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk, which was a 5K walk for diabetes research. Another prestigious event Gamma Nu played a major role in was the AARP File of Life event. Lending a hand and providing guidance was the major objective fulfilled by Gamma Nu as members of AARP from around the Stockton community came and had a card completed that listed all their medications. First- and second-year pharmacy students teamed up with a pharmacist to help fill out the cards for patients and review their medications for any problems. Many of the volunteering pharmacists were alumni brothers of Gamma Nu. Members of Gamma Nu’s most recent pledge class, Beta, completed their final task, which entailed performing free blood pressure screenings at a local community event called Autumn Feast. Gamma Omicron is one Kappa Psi chapter that spans two cities. The OU College of Pharmacy has locations in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and uses distance learning to connect the two campuses with the same professors and classes. Our chapter uses the same technology during our meetings. This unusual situation brings unique challenges and opportunities for our Brotherhood. Our chapter must be intentional in preventing miscommunication and a lack of unity within our organizational structure. As pharmacists, one of our greatest challenges

Karen Lucas poses with her Delta Pi little siblings, Amma Akrofi and Sara Braboy, at the Delta Pi initiation. is to communicate information to our patients and members of the healthcare system. Having two separate sites affords us the opportunity to polish our skills in providing information quickly and succinctly to our fellow brothers. It also provides more opportunity for leaders to emerge and for greater involvement from members. The diversity of our chapter is increased and our network of friendships is expanded. Gamma Omicron is planning more “across the turnpike activities to involve and integrate our members and strengthen friendships between the two campuses. After a very successful rush week, our chapter is growing and we are attracting the best members of the new student class. On October 21 we held our annual pledge scavenger hunt. Our current members served as drivers for the pledge class to help them on a search for miscellaneous items that were to be found and photographed throughout Tucson. The winning team was (1) the most creative, (2) efficient, and (3) included all team members and items in the photographs. At the end of October we held a Halloween/Product Presentation party. Delta Gamma

Auburn University Founded 2/24/1963 Auburn University Box 14 Auburn, AL 36849

Delta Gamma chapter kicked off the year by taking the largest group ever to summer conclave in Atlanta. It has been our experience that conclave can take minimally involved members and really change their perspective on what Kappa Psi is and what it can be. This summer was no different. We went with 17 members and came back with 17 brothers. We had more than 100 students show up to our informal and formal rush parties. We also have a new faculty advisor, Dr. Dave Brackett, originally a brother in Gamma Sigma chapter. Dr. Brackett has really helped us with the changes that we have been trying to make in our chapter and makes a conscious effort to be at every meeting and event we have. It is so wonderful to have a faculty advisor with so much insight into what it really takes to run a chapter. We also implemented a new pledge process this year. We thought these changes were necessary to make sure our new brothers would be dedicated to our goals. To welcome our pledges we had a pool social at Bumpers and a Little Brother/Big Brother dinner where brothers took their pledges out for dinner and really spent time talking to each other about what our chap-

ter is trying to accomplish. These events were planned in an effort to make all 64 pledges feel part of our organization. We haven’t been all business, though. We enjoyed tailgating at all home football games with our alumni, and even brothers from Sigma Pi and Sigma Phi. We took groups to Atlanta to go to Six Flags and Braves games. We had a toga party and a huge Halloween social. Our chapter has also been heavily involved in intramural sports. Our flag football team finished the season with only one loss; we also had teams compete in volleyball and soccer. We got into the Christmas spirit with initiation on November 28, and what better Christmas present could we give our pledges than the privilege of finally being brothers in Kappa Psi. We initiated 59 new brothers into our chapter. Then our new members hosted a Christmas dinner for the older brothers. As admission to this dinner, all brothers were required to bring a toy for the local Toys for Tots campaign. At the end of the night we had 13 trash bags full of toys. We also took up money to sponsor several children through the Angel Tree program and wrote more than 100 Christmas cards to be taken to the assisted living facilities in our area. To finish off fall semester, the new brothers planned and hosted a tacky ’80s Christmas party at a local bar. We have high expectations for spring semester. We will join the rest of the Province at winter conclave with around 30 brothers attending. We also plan to work at a NASCAR race as a fund-raising venture and will host a St. Patrick’s Day party for our entire school of pharmacy. We have started making plans for our spring formal and have several themed parties planned, including Black-and-White Night and “PSS Party.” Usually PSS stands for Professional Seminar Series, but we’ll be living it up as Pirates, Superstars, and Superheroes! Chapter members also had the opportunity to participate in the AIDS walk and the breast cancer walk. We participated in the event Helping the Homeless with a local Maryland church; we also have some ongoing community service events like working with HIV and AIDS patients. Delta Kappa members appreciate the fact that being in the Washington, D.C., area gives us the opportunity to make a difference in the community by participating in beneficial volunteer events. They took on the challenge by Dr. Welder to get the most signatures from current brothers on campus to win a Kappa Psi blanket. The Province IX midyear meeting in Tucson was held October 13–14. Amy Jenkins, our vice regent, went out and represented our chapter well. We appreciate the brothers there for putting on a good meeting and showing everyone a good time. Also that weekend was the APhA-ASP midyear regional meeting in Anaheim. Robert Morris, our historian, served as the school delegate and helped pass a few proposals that will further the professional scope of pharmacists. We would like to congratulate brothers of the University of New Mexico for having a couple of their

Fall quarter 2006 proved to be the busiest yet for the young Delta Phi chapter of Kappa Psi. Brothers started the quarter with a dinner at Chili’s restaurant in Mira Mesa on September 25. All proceeds from that night went to support St. Jude Hospital. Additional donations were recognized by the donor being able to hand-design and draw a chili to be hung on the wall of the restaurant. Needless to say, there were a substantial number of Kappa Psidesigned chilies decorating the restaurant after we left. Later that week, Delta Phi held its first official rush event of the year. Our annual bonfire at La Jolla Shores beach on September 28 was a blast as always. It gave brothers a chance to catch up with one another on the events of the summer as well as begin to get to know the members of UCSD’s newest class of pharmacy students. Burgers and hot dogs were grilled, marshmallows were burned (I mean, perfectly toasted), s’mores were made, and

brothers shared with the P1s what Kappa Psi means to them, all among the backdrop of an amazing La Jolla sunset. The night was made even more memorable by alumni Ali Rezaei and Gamma Nu Brother Jeff Melnick stopping by. The very next night was Delta Phi’s immensely successful party/fund-raiser at the club Ole Madrid. For this fund-raiser, passes were sold to brothers, other students, and friends that allowed the holder express entrance into the club and access to VIP mezzanines. Brothers Michelle Ho and Nasim Ghafouri masterminded an evening that was filled with socializing and dancing, and one that raised substantial funds for Delta Phi.

Rush for Kappa Psi Delta Phi continued on October 10 with an evening spent at Mira Mesa Lanes bowling alley. Rushees met with brothers on campus where they were given more information on our Brotherhood, then everyone carpooled to the bowling alley. On October 17, another fun-filled event took place. Brothers and rushees invaded Boomer’s, a local miniature golf and arcade park. Wristbands allowed all in attendance unlimited arcade games and miniature golf. The more adventurous of the group also spent time “shooting” each other in the laser tag attraction and burning rubber on the go-kart track. Competition and camaraderie ran high as brothers and P1s did their best to out-

drive and outshoot each another. Our final rush event was in the form of an alumni potluck held at Doyle Park. Great food, a pirate piñata, basketball, and dodgeball made for an entertaining day as alumni, current brothers, and rushees enjoyed some sunshine and conversation outside of class. Kudos to rush chair Andy Chang and all the brothers who had a hand in putting together what was an outstanding rush period! Bids this year came to the rushees in their mailboxes in the form of cryptic notes written in pirate jargon inviting them to pledge. The bids were dyed to an antique-brown color with tea, baked, and the edges were singed and holes were burned through the

paper. Thanks to the Pledge Committee for coming up with the wording and to Liz Sarles, Robert Mancini, and Brandon Mutrux for the hours put into preparing them. The after party was pirate-themed, complete with Pirates of the Caribbean playing in the background, a chocolate fountain, and awesome decorations. Besides the all-important rush period, Delta Phi was extremely active in giving back to the community during fall quarter. Brothers traveled to Santee to work a Meet the Pharmacist event at Senior Fair Day. By pairing with pharmacists, brothers counseled patients on proper medication use, indications, side effects, and proper adherence. It gave patients a chance to obtain personalized information, ask questions, and share concerns while obtaining top-notch counseling. In a three-hour period, more than 75 seniors were talked to. In addition, brothers worked a hypertension screening booth at UCSD’s open house, allowing visitors to learn more about the disease and be screened for risk factors. On October 28, 10 Delta Phi brothers walked in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. Lannie Duong set up a group that included Andy Chang, Patrick Chung, Sanaz Farhadian, Liz Sarles, Julia Harder, Nina Haste, Shawna Kobayashi,

Gamma Chi brothers Michelle Ruiter, Mary Best, Jason Brown, Jon Beaulac, Katie Georges, Patrick Kujat, Eric Tedeschi, Diana Ursoic, Elena Roe, and Richard Long at Cedar Point. Paige Pancoast, and John Robertson. By working as a team, the group raised a phenomenal $2,224 for Alzheimer’s research! Congratulations go out to all of them for walking and for everyone who donated money to this outstanding cause. In further philanthropic efforts, Delta Phi completed and submitted its patch to be included in the MS quilt. Thanks again to Lannie Duong for putting together an awesome patch that was decorated with a broken “capsule” spilling out its “contents,” which were names of Delta Phi brothers. Finally, Delta Phi also put together an Antibiotic Awareness Committee to complete the other philanthropic project presented at the Province IX meeting. We sent five brothers to the Province IX meeting in Tucson. Brothers Sanaz Farhadian, Liz Sarles, Robert Mancini, Isabel Rivas, and Jim Connor came back with great ideas for our chapter, and they managed to further advertise our Kappa Psi necktie fund-raiser. To highlight an already fun weekend for the group, Brother Robert Mancini won the poker tournament. We look forward to seeing fellow brothers again at the next Province meeting. Besides physical activities, our chapter has made leaps and bounds in documenting what we do. The very first issue of our own newslet-

ter, The Centamini, debuted on October 26. Brothers Patrick Chung and Tricia Gumabon produced an amazingly professionallooking newsletter full of pictures and articles, as well as interesting Kappa Psi and pharmaceutical factoids. In addition to this, our website, http://ky-dp.sdsc.edu/, is up and running. Another huge thanks to Brother Nina Haste for securing the space and designing the site. Delta Phi is ecstatic to have completed an exciting and busy fall quarter. More importantly, we anticipate further strengthening our chapter with our Epsilon pledge class, and hope to continue what has been nothing short of phenomenal growth. —Brandon Mutrux

University of Minnesota— Duluth Founded 8/8/2003 School of Pharmacy Duluth, MN 55812

We held an informal initiation this fall to celebrate our current brothers; although no pledges were there, we still had fun! Planning is underway for a January retreat to Lutsen Resort in Duluth where skiing and relaxing will be the main priorities. At Province VIII fall conclave in Fargo, we were proud to win the Traveling Trophy, an award given to a traveling chapter within the Province that has the highest percentage of brothers in attendance.

As we are enthusiastic about serving our community, Delta Psi assisted at a flu vaccine clinic and volunteered at Damiano Center’s Kids Café where brothers helped the nonprofit get organized to serve children more efficiently. We also “adopted” a family for the holiday season through the Salvation Army and supported this family by purchasing Christmas gifts from their wish list. Delta Psi is proud to be a part of this service project again this year and looks forward to making the dreams of one family in our area come true. Fund-raisers for Delta Psi through fleece, sweater, and T-shirt sales have proven to be a hit with both the Duluth and Twin Cities campuses of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. We are once again offering College of Pharmacy “Mom” and “Dad” sweatshirts so our parents can display their pride in being a student pharmacist’s parent and also keep warm during the winter. —Stephanie Root

Arizona Graduate Brothers from across Arizona reunited in Tucson for the Province IX interim assembly. The weekend was a great success, thanks to the outstanding planning of Gamma Upsilon. We were honored to have in attendance the GCDs from both local chapters, Dr. John Murphy and Dr. Michael Dietrich. Thanks to both for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend the meeting. November couldn’t come fast enough as brothers eagerly awaited Brett and Bonita’s wedding. The ceremony was held in Gilbert at Villa Siena in a romantic European

number and accomplishments. We are proud to have received eighth in the Graduate Chapter of the Year award category for 2006. This a novel accomplishment in that we are trying to revive a previously dormant chapter, and we are gaining headway. We were able meet once again this quarter at the Province VIII assembly in Fargo. We sold Kappa Psi scrub pants here, which allowed us to provide scholarships for our collegiate brothers from Delta Zeta and Beta Chi. Congratulations go out to brothers Matt Witry from Delta Zeta and Ashley Vanderschoor from Beta Chi, the first biannual scholarship winners. Each will receive a scholarship good for dues for their local chapter. Risk management policies were also approved and submitted. Additionally, plans are being made to meet between Province VIII assemblies, possibly in Des Moines, during late winter or early spring. —Tabitha Brant

with several brothers in attendance, including immediate past regent Matt Kremin and immediate past secretary Doug Gallo. The chapter would like to formally thank them for their years of dedication to Columbus Grad and for maintaining the chapter through some lean times. Many documents and good advice were exchanged with our new officers at this meeting. We updated our chapter local ordinances, submitted them for approval, and created a new chapter risk management policy. Our plans for this winter are to attend the Xi chapter initiation and support our collegians as much as possible. We are still exploring the possibility of hosting a chapter golf outing in June. Minnesota Graduate brothers attended another wonderful Province VIII meeting October 13–15 in Fargo. Thanks to Beta Sigma for all of their work in making the weekend a success. The fall Grad chapter meeting and soup potluck had great attendance and gave us a chance to catch up on happenings since our summer barbeque. We again sold Entertainment Books as a fund-raising effort to help us support our philanthropic activities. This has been a relatively simple project that helps us raise more than $200 in additional funds each year. Since trying to find time to get together is always a challenge with everyone’s busy schedules, we are looking to restart our happy hours on an every-other-month basis. And last year’s murder mystery dinner was such a blast that we are looking for another venue to test our detective skills. Several graduate brothers joined Epsilon in November for their fall dinner meeting at Jax Café. Pacific Graduate There was a major event that Pacific Grad and Kappa Psi in general shined in. On Saturday, November 4, the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy (UOP) and the AARP collaborated on an event called Meet the Pharmacist. This event consisted of students, pharmacists, and professors educating, assisting, and reinforcing the idea of pharmacy with the aging public. One of the featured stations at this event gave attendees the chance to bring their medications and other supplements to a pharmacist for opinions, suggestions, and clarifications. Each pharmacist was assisted by two pharmacy students to collect information, help with recommendations, and make the elderly feel more comfortable about the area and the school. Among those Kappa Psi alumni in attendance were Doctors Gabe Leung, Chris Amaral, Bruch Uch, Derrick Egi, Leland Ibarra, Adam Kaye, Mark Walberg, and Donald Floriddia. Kappa Psi accounted for about half the pharmacists present in this school-wide event. The weather was a little gloomy, but those who showed their face on campus were not disappointed, leaving smiling and satisfied. Thanks to all brothers who showed face and helped the school. —Derrick Egi

This officer (in his/her last year of school) is in charge of obtaining all new graduates’ contact information and passing it along to the graduate chapter. We see this as a great tool for getting more involvement from newer graduates, as well as improving communication with the student actives. Province VIII The brothers of Beta Sigma chapter at North Dakota State University hosted the Province VIII fall conclave October 13–14, 2006. We had a phenomenal 183 brothers, pledges, and guests in attendance at the Ramada Plaza and Suites in Fargo. The weekend started off with a High School Cliques theme party. It felt like we were all back in high school with a variety of groups, including cheerleaders, gothics, fashion queens, nerds, band players, and the mathematics club, just to name a few. A fun night was had by all as it definitely took us back to the best (and worst) times of high school! Our business meeting started bright and early Saturday when satrap Meagan Wilson called the meeting to order. All graduate and collegiate chapters were present. The Grand Officers in attendance were Grand Vice Regent Sean Higgins who discussed the upcoming GCC in Boston, August 7–11, 2007. Grand Counselor Becky Fahrenbruch encouraged updating our bylaws and coming to the Kappa Psi booth at the ASHP midyear meeting. We were even joined by our very own Province VIII supervisor, Brett Rathi, who reviewed highlights from the fall packet. In addition, we had visitors from Province I. We thank them for traveling such a long distance to join us. The business meeting continued with a presentation by Tracy Anderson Haag for the National Chapter Awards Committee and the Province VIII officer reports. Some highlights were that we had 100 percent submission of the Progress Report form, and four of eight Province VIII chapters were in the top 10 chapters in the nation (Epsilon at third, Delta Zeta at sixth, Gamma Kappa tied for eighth, and Gamma Epsilon at ninth). 54-year-old Ronald Hammond is a second-year pharmacy major and an active member of Beta Epsilon chapter. Why did Hammond decide to return to school at this age, and tackle one of the University’s most difficult majors? “I had lots of free time on my hands,” Hammond said, and he wanted to put it to good use. “Going back to school would help me gain knowledge and make me able to treat my patients better.” Hammond has also been a fulltime emergency medical technician with the Woonsocket Fire Department for the past 9 years. “Many patients we pick up on the rescue are on a myriad of medications. I want to know that any treatment or medications I give doesn’t have an adverse affect on them.” Hammond is the fundraising chairman of Beta Epsilon chapter, which has provided him the clout to voice his opinion on the upcoming construction of a new $65 million pharmacy building at URI. He says the current building, Fogarty Hall, is outdated. “A new facility would provide more labs and classroom space,” said Hammond. “Plus we need a computer rom for on-line research with a student lounge to relax in while studying.” He also feels that classrooms should be more state-of-the-art and faculty offices need to be bigger than “the size of a small closet.” In addition to his work within the fraternity, Hammond is also a member of the Association of Student Pharmacists, and is an intern at CVS.

One highlight was that the Health Promotion and Education Committee recommended changing our Province philanthropy from the Ronald McDonald House to “Organizations that Benefit Families in Need.” The meeting ended with elections of new Province VIII officers. Dena Kroska was elected as vice satrap and Austin Ewing as our secretary/treasurer. We would like to thank Jody Garry and Dena Kroska for their hard work and devotion to Province VIII and Kappa Psi over the last two years. They did an amazing job! Stewardship It is time once again to put winter behind us and head into the busy season of Province assemblies in Kappa Psi. We all need to remember that we are Kappa Psi and that the actions of a few can have consequences or benefits for all. Make sure that your actions are beneficial. I hope all of you had a great holiday season and enjoyed your break from the grind of school. The holidays help me remember that we are all part of many communities, but most importantly, we are part of the community of humanity. As part of this community, it is our responsibility to look out for each other and to help those who are less fortunate. I have heard it said that to take care of others is the best work of life. Kappa Psi has always proved to be an example in that regard. Our chapters raise money and give time to many philanthropic organizations. There are brothers who volunteer to cook and clean at Ronald McDonald houses across the country. We have a committee that helps watch out for brothers who are stricken by natural disasters. And we pass the hat at Province meetings to help a brother pay for uncovered, expensive medical care. These are the things that make me say, “Proud To Be Your Brother. These are things that really make life fun. These things may not seem like a big deal when we do them, but the burdens that we remove from those in need are often not measured in physical or financial strength, but in the emotional support that we provide. Often, others just need to know that Sean Higgins

there is someone willing to help out when they need it most. We will all be getting this summer in Boston. I encourage each chapter and/or Province to put together a small packet of information about the events they organize in service to the community and how they produce these events. This is something we can share Fraternity-wide, which will benefit Kappa Psi and the communities we serve. In Boston, you will have the opportunity to serve the community of Kappa Psi by bringing your local voice to the national stage and letting it be heard through debate and voting. Remember to place principles before personalities and to keep your actions fixed on the best interests of our community, Kappa Psi. As you begin to raise money to send your delegates to Boston, also remember those in need in your community. Continue to raise money and volunteer your time to help those who are less fortunate. Find some additional fund-raising activities to help with your expenses for the 53rd Grand Council Convention in Boston. Finally, remember to be kind to yourself, to others, and to be good stewards of the gifts with which you have been blessed. Many of these gifts are meaningless if they are not shared within your community. Sean Higgins Grand Vice Regent
