From the Grand Regent

Family I hope that this message finds you in good spirits and well on your way to accomplishing your goals for the year. As I write this message to you, Thanksgiving has just passed and we are fast approaching Christmas. It is during this time of the season that we traditionally give thanks for all the blessings that have been bestowed upon us. I am eternally grateful for my wonderful family—my wife, May, and my two little girls, Leilani and Kalea. You can look forward to meeting them during the 2009 GCC in Tampa. But I am also thankful for my Kappa Psi family. And for better or worse, we are a family. The benefit we get is from the love and support of our brothers. Kappa Psi brothers are always there when you need a helping hand. Think about that the next time you are taking a road trip and your car breaks down. Think about whether you are near a Kappa Psi chapter, and if so, give them a call. I’m sure they will be more than willing to help you out, even though they don’t know you personally. I suggest putting the Kappa Psi Central Office phone number in your cell phone in case of emergencies as well. And for the collegiate and graduLawrence “LB” Brown Grand Regent

ate chapters, I would suggest looking into getting a Yellow Pages listing to make it easier for brothers in need to contact you, or for those brothers who may just be in town and want to hang out with some brothers. But being a family also means having disagreements and other issues. Since Kappa Psi is for life, that means your brothers are with you for life as well. No family is perfect, but Kappa Psi’s is pretty great. So try to put your differences behind you for the benefit of the family. Remember the old adage, “Together we stand, divided we fall”? We won’t always agree on everything, but Kappa Psi is much stronger, and we can accomplish the most good when we work together. Thanks again for all of your love and support of Kappa Psi. I am not only proud to be your Grand Regent, but I am proud of all of you for the work you do for Kappa Psi. And always feel proud in the knowledge that you are a member of the greatest pharmacy fraternity in the world, Kappa Psi International Pharmaceutical Fraternity. Let’s keep making it a better fraternity. Fraternally Yours,

Lawrence “LB” Brown Grand Regent 2007–2009

On the Cover Thinking outside the box is a cliché or catchphrase used to refer to looking at a problem from a new perspective without preconceptions, sometimes called a process of lateral thought. The catchphrase has become widely used in business environments, especially by management consultants and executive coaches, and has spawned a number of advertising slogans. “Out-of-the-box-y-ness” has also caught on recently, typically used to describe creative, wacky, smart ideas. —From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Inside and Outside Think outside the box. This is a phrase that you have heard many times. It is used to motivate us to drop some old ways and thoughts in order to solve problems or create new ideas and solutions. This phrase can be applied to our Fraternity as well, but I submit that in addition to thinking outside the box that we must also think inside the circle. The “circle” that I am referring to is the circle of our fraternity world. This could be the circle of your local chapter, circle of Province chapters, or even the circle of all the fraternity chapters. Each circle or group has probably done business in the usual manner for a long time. Each set of outgoing officers passes down the knowledge that they were given from their predecessors and brothers before them, to the new set of incoming officers. Not that this is wrong or a bad practice, but just think if each officer (local, Province or national) begins to think outside the box, with the understanding of which circle they were affecting, then I believe better results can occur. I recently read where a local chapter elected new officers. Each candidate had sworn to change how things were run at the local chapter during the elections. That is exactly what they did once they were elected. Nothing was off limits when it came to change. This included meeting times, dates, places, projects, and parties. All the things that the local chapter did in a year were examined. They came to the conclusion that a lot of things were done just because it was done the year before, required little or no effort to repeat it or had always been done that way. They wanted to try different ideas so all of the above things were changed in addition to adopting new charitable endeavors, social projects and fundraising drives. What was the result of these changes in the way they did business? That chapter had more pledges, raised more money than ever before, added two parties a year, had money for a scholarship to a brother, and was named one of the outstanding fraternities on the campus. With just a few new changes applied to the same set of goals, the chapter reaped many dividends. WOW! What kind of new thought process can your chapter go through? What can you do to make things better for your “circle”? If you never try, then you will never know how much better things can be. We are entering a new era in the Fraternity and we must all think outside the box and inside the circle if we are to grow and flourish. Old ways of doing business must be changed and new ideas must be tried. Some of the new ways may not give the desired results but, then again, they may result in dividends that we never anticipated. So we try. I for one am thinking about the old way of doing business, looking for new ways and ideas. Are you? Fraternally,

Johnny W. Porter

Remembrances This series of articles, written by Past National Officers of the Fraternity, will appear frequently. The purpose of this series is to let the members of Kappa Psi see what the Fraternity was like when some of our past officers were in leadership roles. The GCCs I Have Known (or I Once Had Hair)

O

nce upon a time in a state far, far away, I was initiated into the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, the Gamma Xi chapter at the University of South Carolina. This was in December of 1968. The first Grand Council Convention that I could attend was in 1969 in Buffalo, New York. Unfortunately, when the time came to determine who would go, I did not get the short straw and had to stay on campus. However, I did go to my first Province III meeting in Charleston, where I met Executive Secretary Dr. Gerald Henney and Mr. James Seymour, who was satrap of the Province. I remember vividly meeting the brothers from the other chapters, many of whom I still keep in contact with after so many years. My first GCC was in 1972 in New Orleans (Kenner, Louisiana, which was across the interstate from the airport). I attended as the Province III delegate, carrying ten (10) votes and not knowing what to vote for or against. This GCC had been postponed one year due to the death of Dr. Henney and also for financial reasons. I can remember at least two general sessions that went past midnight with all the voting and motions and amendments that were presented. It was here that I met some of the legends of Kappa Psi; Dr.

E. Ben Welch is congratulated in 1979 after winning the election for Graduate Member-at-Large at the 39th GCC in Scotsdale, Arizona.

Norman Campbell, Mr. Bill Fitzpatrick, Dr. Pat Wells, and Dr. Dewey Garner. During this GCC, I was very pleased when Jim Seymour was elected as Grand Historian, a brother whom I knew personally and consider a close friend. He and I have stayed in contact for over 39 years and occasionally get together to swap tall tales and whoppers and reminisce about the good ole days. In 1974, I attended my second GCC in Kansas City. I drove with my wife, Mike Deweese and his wife, and Richard (Tricky) Shuler in our 1972 Dodge something.

Having five drivers allowed us to cover a lot of road between Columbia, South Carolina, and Kansas City. I do remember stopping in Cairo, Illinois, and having a $5 sirloin steak, probably one of the best I’ve ever had (and the price was right). We stayed in the Continental Hotel, an older hotel in downtown Kansas City. On Sunday, we were treated to a day at the baseball park, courtesy of Marion Labs. We also went to the outdoor Starlight Theatre to hear Dionne Warwick and Roger Williams (two entertainers most of you never heard of). Collegiate dues were raised by 13 percent, from $1.50 to $1.75, and

Graduate chapter dues were doubled to $100. As well as I can remember, this was the only GCC where the brothers passed a non-Kappa Psi related resolution encouraging the states to make CE mandatory for relicensure. The delegates also passed a resolution prohibiting the consumption of alcohol during general sessions. The 200th anniversary of the United States was celebrated in Philadelphia—what could be a better time or place for the 38th GCC. The celebrations began with a fireworks extravaganza at Valley Forge and

later, over the city itself. To me, the highlight of the convention was meeting Dr. Frank Eby, a brother who is synonymous with Kappa Psi. Talking with him was a wonderful journey into some of the history of Kappa Psi. We were treated to a Phillies baseball game. When Kappa Psi turned 100 years old, we celebrated the anniversary in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the 39th GCC. We stayed at the five-star Camelback Inn, where the very large and luxurious rooms were only $40/night. The suite that was occupied by our Executive Director, Dr. Don Floridda, had an indoor swimming pool among the other amenities. Not sure if it was the time of year or the location, but more graduate brothers attended than collegians. This was the first convention where our female brothers attended. I can remember sitting behind Ms. Lynette Weil (Rho) in the general sessions and periodically we would give each other evil looks. Today we joke about that convention and will have a libation or two to celebrate our friendship. One of the highlights that I especially enjoyed was the history presentation by Dr. Leonard Naeger where he reviewed our first Winter 2008

100 years. Another highlight was our day trip to the Grand Canyon. One word describes this place—WOW! We had a dinner at Pinnacles Peak that evening where they clipped off our clip-on ties and put them on the wall, along with hundreds of others that had been clipped-off. There were numerous constitutional changes made, removing any references to males, to bring our Bylaws and Constitution into compliance with Title IX. Along with these changes, the Executive Committee was streamlined from 17 to eight members and the office of Collegiate Member-at-Large was established. And, oh yeah, I was elected as Graduate Member-at-Large. We went north for the 40th GCC— Detroit, Michigan, where we stayed at the Hotel Ponchartrain, looking over the Detroit River toward Windsor, Canada. The spouses and children visited a number of sites, including Meadowbrook Hall, the Cranebrook Institute, Detroit Science Center and Cultural Center, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Historical Museum and Greenfield Village, with the rest of us. Even though the elections and banquet were over, we met for the final session on Friday morning to install the elected officers,

hear from the Resolutions Committee, and conduct any unfinished business. The sun, surf, sand, and warm climate brought 191 of us to the 41st GCC in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The convention was hosted by Gamma Xi and the South Carolina Graduate chapter. Mike Deweese and I served as co-convention chairs. The convention started on Wednesday night with a “Welcome to the Grand Strand” party held at poolside sponsored by the host chapters. The festivities lasted well into Thursday morning (as was witnessed by all the sunglasses at the First General Session). Our free afternoon allowed the brothers to enjoy the many varied activities and a number of them went deep sea fishing (be sure to ask Johnny Porter about his FISH). Later that night, many of us took advantage of the miniature golf that was offered by Mr. Roddy Williams (Gamma Xi), a partner of Mr. Wilson Cain (keynote speaker). Brother Williams closed one of his golf courses at midnight and made it available for us, many of whom were still playing at 3 a.m. (when I left). The 103rd Anniversary Dinner was held in the Grand Strand Ballroom, where we feasted (many times) on a seafood buffet consisting of fried shrimp, fried oysters, fried flounder, deviled crab, French fries, hush puppies, and tossed salad. The spouses and children visited Waccamaw Pottery and the Factory Outlet Shopping Park, Brookgreen Gardens and Pawleys Island during the convention to enjoy the sights, the smells, and most of all, the seafood. We’re back to the beach for the 42nd GCC, South Padre Island, Texas. We enjoyed a day trip to Matamoras, Mexico, where several of the brothers discovered NOT to drink the $0.25/gallon mescal. The convention was highlighted with a special tribute, conducted by Past Grand Regent Dr. Dewey D. Garner, to Brother Frank H. Eby, who entered the Grand Agora shortly after the 41st GCC. Off to Florida. During the 43rd GCC, Bill Frederick, mayor of Orlando, declared that the week of August 9–14, 1987, be known as Kappa Psi Week in Orlando. We spent one

free day at Disney World and Epcot Center, while other brothers went to Daytona Beach. We also spent one afternoon at the local water park, getting wet and sunburned. Historic Williamsburg was the site for the 44th GCC, where for the first time, female brothers run for office; Ms. Lynette Weil and Ms. Sue Ell Wygul. There were lots of places to see around the area and many brothers wanted to stay longer to enjoy the rich history. With the view of the Grand Tetons in the background, we met at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for the 45th GCC. The highlight of the convention was the day trip to Yellowstone National Park, where we had dinner at Old Faithful. The brothers were warned that unless they could run faster then 38 mph (or were faster than their companions), they should stay clear of the buffaloes. For one of the few times I can remember, no legislation was introduced. From the heights of the Grand Tetons to the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, we next met in Marco Island, Florida. The Gulf was warm, pretty much waveless, and full of small stingrays lying right next to the shoreline. The brothers were advised to do the stingray-shuffle to scare them away as

opposed to having one of them stab you in the foot. The first volleyball tournament was held during this convention. Brother Steve Naeger brought his boat and several of us enjoyed water skiing. “Escape to the Cape” was the theme for the 47th convention (1995) held at North Falmouth, Massachusetts, where 336 of us enjoyed the warmish summer climate and trips to Martha’s Vineyard. The first golf tournament was held at the Ballymead Country Club along with another volleyball tournament. I was scheduled to arrive at 2 p.m. on the opening day, but due to plane/airport problems (go figure!) I did not arrive until 6 p.m., was met by my son Edward, and we then drove to the Cape, arriving just in time to go to the opening reception. And once again, on the way home, I was delayed leaving Providence and missed my flight and had to stay overnight in Houston. With 440 attendees, the 48th GCC in Myrtle Beach was the largest on record. The Biennial Awards Luncheon was started and certificates of appreciation were given to me (as webmaster) and Dr. Ed Magarian for his work on the Central Office’s database. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only con-

vention where a father and son ran for office, that being Edward and me. This convention also marked the first time a female brother was elected to an international office. Ms. Marquette Hardin was elected as Collegiate Member-at-Large. The first Foundation Golf Tourney was held and a number of impromptu softball games were contested. The spouses and children enjoyed several trips to some of the local attractions and were provided continental breakfasts daily. The 49th GCC traveled west to Kalispell, Wyoming, not far from Glacier National Park and whitewater rafting. Nena and I flew into Spokane, rented a car and drove to Kalispell through some of the most beautiful scenery we’ve seen. Our day trip to Glacier National Park was in one word AWESOME. The six-

hour excursion included a box lunch and a guided tour of the park in those red colored open topped taxis. Some of the brothers saw bears much closer than they would have liked. Legislation was passed to establish the Robert A. Magarian–Order of the Silver Mortar with membership restricted to persons who have been members of the Fraternity for 25 years. Prior to the 50th GCC in Ft. Lauderdale, 43 of us enjoyed ‘Brotherhood in the Bahamas,’ a three-day cruise on Carnival sponsored by the Southwestern Graduate chapter. It rained while we were in Nassau, but we did get to tour Paradise Island. Following the cruise, several of us spent the day and night at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on Key Largo. We enjoyed snorWinter 2008

keling in the warm water and really fresh seafood, some of which I think I saw earlier while snorkeling. From east to west, we met in San Diego for the 51st GCC and once again, the Southwestern Graduate chapter sponsored ‘Take Two,’ a three-day cruise on Carnival to Ensenada, Mexico. We enjoyed a day in Ensenada, touring the city, visiting El Bufadora (the blowhole) and trying real Mexican cuisine. Arriving back in California, we took the train from LA to San Diego, a beautiful trip that followed the coastline the entire time. It was Steel City (Pittsburgh) where over 350 of us enjoyed the brotherhood and sites at the 52nd GCC. Four of us went to Canton, Ohio, to tour the Pro Football Hall of Fame … a tour I highly recommend, especially if you go with a ‘senior’ brother and get a reduced ticket price. The late night boat trip was very enjoyable, seeing Pittsburgh lit at night. And now, the last GCC, Boston, where we broke the record set in Myrtle Beach with 441 attendees. This was my second trip to Boston, having been here in 1984 when Mu chapter hosted the Province I meeting. This time, however, I was able to see much more of the town and enjoy some of the wonderful cuisine. I was elected as Grand Vice Regent, a position I held 24 years earlier. My, how the conventions have changed. Candidates used to serve alcohol in their rooms to those who wanted to talk about the Fraternity. Off color jokes used to be told during the elections. There were no Power Point presentations. But one thing has not changed—the meeting of new brothers and renewing of old acquaintances, something that I always look forward to and what keeps me coming year after year after year.

My Kappa Psi Road-Trip By Marvin R. Smith

Officers of South Florida & Bahama Grad (Regent Daniel Welch, Vice-Regent Scott Tulloch, Treasurer Michelange Tanis, Secretary Doug Kennedy, Province Liaison Marvin Smith, and GR LB Brown.

f the many enjoyable experiences I have had as a collegiate Brother in Kappa Psi, the ones I missed the most were the many road-trips I took to visit Brothers at different chapters across the country. I have fond memories of my 16-hour drive to Pittsburgh in the fall of 1997, to hang out at the Beta Kappa house, and join them as they traveled to Philadelphia for the Province II Conclave. Other visits bring back flashes of the good times spent at the Beta Xi house for a party, talking smack at the Beta Omega house, dancing with the Delta Theta’s and getting my groove on in Chocolate City with the Brothers of Delta Kappa. But my best times were always at the many parties and events of the Province IV chapters; especially the many tailgates with the Gamma Phi Brothers watching our beloved Dawgs beat up on some poor victim. There is just no experience like a good Fraternity road-trip. In the past seven years of my graduate experience, I have done much travel for Kappa Psi, but I still missed the feel of the open road, and being able to visit multiple chapters in a single trip. So when the opportunity presented itself this fall for such an adventure, I eagerly took it. Having been appointed as the Assistant Supervisor for Province III, I was planning to attend the Fall Conclave when I realized that the dates were a week apart from the proposed chartering

O

dates for the South Florida & Bahamas, and North Florida Graduate chapters. As the Graduate Development chairman for Province IV, my attendance at these events were expected, so I decided that this would be a great time for an old fashioned road trip. To make it even more exciting, I convinced a few Brothers to join me for various stages, one of them being our Grand Regent Lawrence Brown. The trip began when I flew to Atlanta on Thursday 11th, October and had enjoyed a social with Brothers from my home chapter Gamma Psi and Georgia Graduate. The next day, Brother Andrew Crowe (Georgia Grad) and Regent Tim Burns (Gamma Psi) began our drive to Columbia, South Carolina, where the Brothers of Gamma Xi were our gracious hosts for the conclave. We had a great time with our P3 Brothers, from the Friday night social, to the very productive meeting the next morning, all the way to the wonderful social at the Gamma Xi house on Saturday evening. But the highlight of the trip was the opportunity we got to participate in the Province III community service project that afternoon. We spent the afternoon cleaning and hauling tree branches that had been cleared in a state park. By the end, we were sore, sweaty and sticky, but the smiles on the faces of the Brothers showed the joy that is present when we do something good to help our communities. Just about every Brother showed up, and

the park rangers and landscape workers expressed how immensely impressed they were at the effort and results of our work. Kudos to Province III, and the Gamma Xi Brothers for coming up with such a worthwhile project. The next day, we got back in our vehicle and drove back to Atlanta, where Brother Crowe and I spent the evening meeting with other Georgia Graduate Brothers as we brainstormed for ideas to assist the Gamma Psi chapter in their efforts to obtain a Kappa Psi Fraternity house. The time we spent was very beneficial and there is a renewed energy by these Brothers to see this project come to fruition. I spent the next 2 days in Chattanooga, Tennessee but drove that Monday evening to Ringgold, a town in North Georgia where I met with a group of Kappa Psi graduates who were expressing interest in forming a North Georgia chapter. Our discussions

were very spirited, and the group is very excited about the contributions they can make to Kappa Psi in that particular area. Brother Seth Hammonds is leading this particular effort. On Wednesday, Brother Crowe and I drove back to Atlanta where we were joined by another Gamma Psi initiate and Georgia Graduate Brother Andrew Asberry, as we conducted a Chapter Development Seminar for our home chapter of Gamma Psi. Having been involved in these types of workshops for over five years, I can truly say that this was the most productive session I have ever been a part of. The Brothers spoke frankly, honestly and openly, and it was amazing to see these young men grow even closer right before my eyes. I watched a chapter truly come together that evening, and the fact that they were our younger Brothers made it so much more special. Long after the meeting was over, Brothers stood in the Winter 2008

parking lot, still bonding, still excited and overwhelmed by the spirit of unity. It was definitely a springboard for what these Brothers plan to do for Kappa Psi. The next morning, I boarded a plane and flew to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where that Thursday night would bring the culmination of a seven-year dream for many Brothers, including me. As I located Grand Regent Lawrence, and Satrap Daniel Welch, I was so excited that we were finally going to have the first international graduate chapter in Kappa Psi chartered that evening, and for the Bahamas to be the international component of that chapter, made me even more proud. The Grand Regent and I picked up our vehicle, inspecting every inch of it, for it was to be the closest thing to home for us for the next four days. That evening, joined by Delta Rho Brothers and their pledges, we stood and took the chartering oath and became officers and members of the South Florida & Bahamas Graduate chapter. The event was hosted by Brother Daniel and his fiancée Samantha at their lakefront home, and with good food and drink, we all had a great time. Daniel and Samantha also hosted our Grand Regent as their houseguest, and as usual, their hospitality was excellent, and much appreciated. Early Friday morning, the Grand Regent and I hit the highway and drove to Tampa, Florida. We spent the day on an informal survey of prospective hotels for the 54th GCC, which will be in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. That evening, the Brothers of the Tampa Graduate chapters hosted a social at the home of Brother Steven and Beth Caddick. It was a wonderful affair with Brothers, their wives and children all enjoying the fellowship with the new Grand Regent, and my wonderful cooking. Later that evening, Brother Hoiling “Jackson” Sah took us out on the town. Once again, we were the recipients of the great hospitality of the Brothers of Province IV, as we were houseguests in the beautiful home of the Caddicks.

Road Trip

Regent Jarryd and Brother Amir relaxing before the chartering at North Florida.

Saturday morning, we headed out barely after the sun was up, on our way to Tallahassee, Florida. It dawned on us that we had selected a poor weekend to charter the North Florida Graduate chapter in this city because the Florida State Seminoles vs Miami Hurricanes game was that afternoon. So we took the back roads and tried to stay one step ahead of the traffic. We arrived in Tallahassee that afternoon, and once again, we were guests of a Kappa Psi Brother, this time being the Regent for the new chapter, Brother Jarryd Jackson. While the Grand Regent took care of other duties, once again, my culinary skills were utilized for the evening’s meal. You could see the pride in the Grand Regent’s smile as he administered the oath to the Brothers, and they were equally proud to see the realization of their dreams and efforts. We had a wonderful time with the Brothers in Tallahassee. The worst part of the trip was my realization that I would have to drive the entire length of the state of Florida in less than 10 hours, because my check-in time to fly home the next day was 6pm. To add fuel to my fire, I needed to stop in Tampa to take Grand Regent Lawrence to the airport since he was flying back to Memphis from there and not Fort Lauderdale. So early that Sunday morning, we started out, hopefully getting a head start on all the partying Hurricane fans from the previous day’s game. We left before 8AM, and by noon, we were in Tampa. I said my goodbyes to my Grand Regent, and as I drove away, I remembered that he had been the first Brother I met at my very first GCC in

Myrtle Beach, which was my very first Kappa Psi road-trip outside of Province IV. I made my way to Fort Lauderdale in plenty of time, and after checking in, sat down to reflect on the past eleven days. I had visited four states, two Provinces, interacted with six chapters outside of Province 3, and met with hundreds of Brothers, pledges and their families. I had been a part of two chapter charterings and seen international Kappa Psi history made. More importantly, I had learned so many things on this trip. I learned that Delta Rho has the coolest pledge T-shirts I’ve ever seen. I loved it so much I’m wearing one right now as I write this. I learned that it is possible to drive while completely surrounded by a cloud of Grand Regent Lawrence’s cigar smoke, and still live to tell about it. I

10 MASK OF KAPPA PSI PHARMACEUTICAL FRATERNITY N Winter 2008

learned that Grand Vice-Regent E. Ben always had that beard, even as a 1970 pledge of Gamma Xi, it was just darker then. I learned that even strong chapters like Gamma Psi, need to vent a little every so often, and I learned that the Regents of our chapters today, are so much more prepared to do this job than we ever were. I also learned so much more about my Brothers Andrew Crowe, Tim Burns and Lawrence Brown. I learned about them as people, not just the Kappa Psi aspects. But most importantly, I learned a lot about myself. While some of it is good, and other aspects difficult to face, the most important thing I learned was that I still have a fire burning in me to be the best Kappa Psi Brother I can be. I realized that if the Grand Regent still believes that he has to grow as a Brother, then I also still have some Kappa Psi growth to do. It dawned on me that we will never arrive to the pinnacle of Kappa Psi until the Grand Regent of the Universe says to us “Well done”. And that is not a bad thing, for He has so much more to teach each of us, and so many ways that we can use to share this Kappa Psi experience with those around us. In a sense, I was reborn during this trip, and re-energized to help every single Brother achieve the Kappa Psi greatness that lies within. It took me 2,893 miles, but they were the easiest miles I’ve ever had, because they were Kappa Psi miles. I’m sure there are a couple of Kappa Psi miles out there with your name on it. Enjoy them!

Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity is having a great year thus far, and we are looking forward to a very productive second semester as well. We just wrapped up our pledging process with initiation on November 10. We had a formal dinner celebration at Coyote Crossing Golf Course to celebrate this occasion. We initiated 13 new

members into the Fraternity. We would like to congratulate them on all of their hard work with pledgeship and wish them the best of luck with the upcoming application process and interviewing for pharmacy school. After hosting Province V in the spring semester of 2007, we are looking forward to celebrating Pi chapter’s 80th birthday in 2008. One of the pledge class projects was to design an event to help commemorate this occasion. We hope to see that shape up into an event filled with great memories and brotherhood bonding. We are currently wrapping up the semester with T-shirt and sweat pant sales. We hope to find this a successful philanthropy event, and we are in the process of planning another fundraiser to hold in the spring semester. We also look forward to our ski trip with Kappa Epsilon. We are very pleased with our success this far in the school year, and we look forward to seeing what is in store for our organization in the spring semester. —Jennifer Martz

Province III assembly in Columbia, South Carolina. Ten brothers packed into two cars and traveled over 500 miles to University of South Carolina, Gamma Xi chapter. The weekend was filled with productive meetings, small group workshops, community service, amazing southern style barbecue, and social hour after dark. Because our chapter doesn’t have a fraternity house of our own, it was an amazing experience to visit and spend quality time in the Kappa Psi house of the Gamma Xi chapter.

Soon after the Province meeting, many brothers attended the APhAASP Midyear Regional Meeting hosted by the University of Maryland. Brother Thao Vuong, the MRM coordinator, along with many brothers and pledges, worked extremely hard to bring the best meeting the region has seen in many years. We are so proud of brothers who are leaders of not only Kappa Psi but of other professional organizations who support all projects that advance the profession of pharmacy.

Several other service events were held during the semester such as providing dinners for cancer patients at the Hope Lodge, a temporary housing facility for those receiving treatment in Baltimore hospitals. Working at Ravens’ stands continues to thrive as the season marches on despite the poor Ravens’ record. We look forward to an exciting semester ahead as the chapter is soon to be 120 brothers strong! —Sophia Park

October 27, 2007, with a Halloween themed celebration following the ceremony. This fall we have volunteered at Special Olympics for their soccer event at Warren Park. Members of Kappa Psi served as referees, line judges, activity facilitators and, most importantly, cheerleaders for the athletes. We had so much fun with soccer that we also aided Special Olympics with their Floor Hockey event at University of Illinois at Chicago. Furthermore, members and pledges helped out at the Ron Santo Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk by cheering on participants and helping the event organizers. Also, some pledges worked in conjunction with the Asian Pharmacists Association of UIC at the Korean Health Fair, aiding with health screenings for the Korean community of Chicago. Recently, we have become involved with an ongoing project with Community Health, a clinic for uninsured individuals, where we spend time within the pharmacy preparing prescriptions and assisting the pharmacist in counseling patients. This pharmacy works off donations from pharmaceutical companies and a small stock of commonly used prescription drugs. So far this fall, we have been involved in many fundraising activities. Selling concessions at Bears football games has been our most intensive fundraising endeavor. As in the past few years, we sold embroidered lab coats, weight sets, and drug cards at discounted prices to the students of UIC-COP. Upcoming sales include chili, chips, and cheese as well as T-shirt sales. —Kelly Valla

For the second year in a row, pledges were able to go to the Ronald McDonald House for Halloween and color, draw, and paint pumpkins with the kids. The Ronald McDonald House serves the needs of patients at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Starting soon Psi chapter is going to have a game night at the Ronald McDonald House that will be a monthly occurrence. A change drive during October helped raise money for Make-AWish. Last year we were able to grant our own wish to a very grateful little girl and are looking forward to the opportunity to grant one again. During the month of December, Psi chapter held a clothing and food drive to benefit those less fortunate in the Memphis area. This year is the first year for our school to be split into two campuses, and our brothers in Knoxville, Tennessee, have been kept busy with establishing the chapter across the state. This move has allowed the Psi chapter to reach out to more communities than we were able to do before. This fall we worked with the Knoxville Second Harvest Food Bank to set up their annual chili cook-off and collected cans for their Thanksgiving distributions. Our expansion has allowed us to take advantage of the many perks that Knoxville has to offer, such as Tennessee football. We have had several tailgate functions

We organized a Kappa Psi team to join the American Heart Association and the San Francisco community in the 2007 Heart Walk. Seventeen brothers came out and we raised $364 for the American Heart Association. As part of the Province IX philanthropy project, Beta Gamma and SF Grad participated in the Light the Night Walk, sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, to support the fight against blood cancers. We were able to raise more than $500 for this event. Beta Gamma is also looking forward to our first annual golf tournament at the Presidio Golf Course & Country Club as a fundraiser for our chapter. The tournament has been officially scheduled for March 27, 2008. We are currently looking for new sponsors to donate money, with a portion of the proceeds going to the American Heart Association. Any questions regarding this event should be forwarded to the Beta Gamma regent, Aaron Prince (aaron.prince@ucsf.edu). We will also be in charge of the UCSF School of Pharmacy Spring Auction in April. The auction raises money

It has been a successful semester, and we look forward to initiating 26 motivated new brothers. It was a great pledge process and every prospective brother shows interest and devotion to the Fraternity. On November 17, brothers participated in the annual Special Olympics fundraiser called “Benefest.” Eight brothers volunteered to help out at the auction fundraiser and, as always, thousands of dollars was raised for a good cause. In the last few weeks, we have been editing our risk management policy in order for it to be in sync with current standards. Our risk manager, Brian Seyboth, has been working vigorously to make appropriate amendments. We have also established a policy that will require all officers of our chapter to maintain binders containing responsibilities, work, and other materials needed to accomplish tasks. This will allow officers to be aware of their primary duties and to make the officer transition process run more smoothly. Due to a large number of participants, we had two Kappa Psi flag football teams for URI intramurals. Both of our teams made it through the first few rounds of the playoffs. Our A team, named “The Bus,” made it to the championships and only lost by a single touchdown. It was a very close game, and we were invited to attend the regional flag football championships held at the University of Maryland. We look forward to participating in more sports, such as basketball and indoor soccer. On November 11, we participated in our annual pledge brother football game. It was a fun and invigorating time in which all brothers participated. This served as a good bonding experience as well as a history lesson on the roots of Kappa

As each semester ensues, so do the common activities for the Beta Kappa chapter and this semester was no exception. Different, however, were some of the individual commitments and leadership roles held by our brothers that ultimately brought one of the most productive terms in recent history. Pledging was a large focus. Pledgemasters Megan Sunseri and Stephanie Piemontese helped to bring together one of our most emotionally charged and committed pledge classes I have ever seen. One could really see the hard work put in when the pledge class was writing new songs and dances, joining brothers at service events, and even trying to start their own projects (without being asked!). So, hats off to you, Mego, Piemo and FPC 2007; you really made the fall semester exciting and special. Notable too, was the reaction of the brothers regarding service projects, due mostly to our chaplain, Liz Foresburg. Though Beta Kappa brothers commonly help out at the local hospital hotels, Liz was able to set up two separate cooking events for the patients and residents—one around Halloween and one around Thanksgiving. I personally helped cook treats for Halloween and had a blast talking with the residents. Pledges were invited to attend the Thanksgiving cooking event, and I personally heard the soon-to-be brothers praising the experience. Events like this really make an impression on them and showwhat Kappa Psi is about. It hasn’t been all fun and games and there have been a lot of places that Beta Kappa needed to tighten the belt on. Regent Tim Kaylor really made it a point to form a strong and dedicated executive board that could address some issues the chapter has been having over the past year. With such a large group, the regent position holds tons of responsibility and necessary inter-

All of the pledges were asked a very interesting question during their induction process, “Do you see yourself in a leadership role within Kappa Psi and what role would that be?” Nearly every single one of them responded that they would be leaders, the roles were various. “There is a sky, which is all men’s together.” –Euripides (412 B.C.) —Nickolas Kernich

After the activation ceremony on December 2, the new brothers were taken out to dinner at Tony Packo’s by their “big” brothers. The brothers of Beta Lambda kept busy this winter with the end of their fall pledging season, various charity projects, and fun annual events. Also, Beta Lambda chapter was recognized in the AACP newsletter for the week it spent educating our fellow pharmacy students and distributing education materials on patient counseling techniques. The brothers participated in Relay for Life in December, worked at a pancake dinner (fun and charity is just killing two birds with one stone), collected money as bell ringers for the Salvation Army, and participated at a Max & Erma’s dinner for Make-A-Wish. Projects for this spring will include helping out at a Brown Bag hosted by CVS that’s still in planning stages—experience in counseling and community service! But don’t go thinking that it’s all work and no play. Early in December the annual University of Toledo College of Pharmacy Dinner Dance was held, which Kappa Psi hosts in conjunction with the ladies of Lambda Kappa Sigma. The Beta Xi brothers have been doing some fundraising events as well. We had a yard sale open to the community and had great success raising money for our house. In addition, we have set four dates to help clean up after UNC basketball games. We are also spending two full days wrapping presents outside of Barnes & Noble. Money we make wrapping gifts will go to support the Relay for Life team we are putting in place for next semester. Beta Xi has been more than busy with philanthropy events! We have still been visiting the Children’s Playroom at UNC Hospitals to raise the spirits of the children there and participating in Adopt-a-Highway. In addition, we made and served two barbeque dinners for the Ronald McDonald house and carved pumpkins that we delivered to them for Halloween. We are also working on a house in Hillsborough with Habitat for Humanity. As Christmas

neared, we participated in making shoeboxes with Operation Christmas Child for Samaritan’s Purse. Furthermore, our tobacco cessation program is still in full swing as we just participated in the Great American Smokeout where brothers promoted tobacco cessation, handed out brochures on programs available to aid in quitting, and counseled patients on tobacco usage. Lastly, we recently received a grant from UNC that will go towards next semester’s Vial of Life project. We are hoping an alumnus at a local CVS will cosponsor our project. We put together the vials over Christmas and hope to hand them out at this local CVS at the start of next semester. As we came closer to the end of the semester, we initiated 10 new brothers. They put in a semester of hard work as pledges and more than deserved to finally become brothers of Beta Xi. A few of the many things they did during their pledge semester included a community service and fundraising project. It is already evident after only a few short weeks with the new brothers that each of them has a great deal to offer to the Fraternity and to the profession of pharmacy. We cannot wait to see what contributions they will make as brothers. We closed our fall semester with our annual semiformal. Brothers and their dates had a nice dinner at Kanki Japanese Steakhouse and afterwards everyone met at our house for more fun. We all opened our secret Santa gifts around our Christmas tree and relaxed together before final exams began. Fall quarter was an exciting and eventful time for Beta Omicron. The biggest task that our chapter took on was, undoubtedly, planning the pledge processes for prospective pledges. Rachael Forster (sergeant-at-arms) and Jennifer Chow (chaplain) worked tremendously hard together as pledgemasters to organize activities that tested the dedication of pledges to the Fraternity, while at the same time helped them discover the meaning of brotherhood. New this year was the implementation of the Kappa Psi Big Brother program, which paired up pledges with a current brother within the chapter to serve as upperclassmen mentors. A scavenger hunt within UW Health Sciences building that incorporated the history of Kappa Psi as clues was also designed to help pledges learn more about the Fraternity. The pledges also worked on a fundraising project together to build unity and teamwork as well as offset their initiation fees. However, perhaps the highlight of this quarter’s accomplishments was Beta Omicron’s enormous

We also sold logo winter caps that were popular both within our chapter and also at the Province VIII fall Conclave. For athletics, we have enjoyed playing intramurals this semester. We played co-rec basketball later in the semester and also participated in a dodge ball competition. Finally, we have continued to attend fun-filled social events. We had a great time during pledge skip and enjoyed getting to know the pledges while eating at Perkins. We also had a blast at our pledges’ social event. have done a great job throughout the pledge process. We will be having initiation in early December with a supper for the brothers and pledges at the Pavilion to follow. Brothers have been having tons of fun together this fall. We have held theme parties at the house including a pajama party and a Halloween costume party. Our fall highway cleanup was a success with 26 brothers and pledges lending a hand. We have also partnered with Nick’s Hamburgers, a local restaurant, and Kappa Epsilon to promote the business and our fraternities at SDSU home basketball games. Nick’s has agreed to donate T-shirts that the brothers will wear to the games and sit together to cheer on the Jacks. The fraternity that shows the most spirit will receive a hamburger feed. The Province VIII fall Conclave was a great success. We sent 18 brothers and seven pledges to Coralville, Iowa. We all had a wonderful time, which made the long drive well worth it. The dances were fun and the free drug rep items were a big hit. Thanks to Delta Zeta for all their hard work and a memorable Conclave. Gamma Kappa has once again been hard at work selling the SDSU College of Pharmacy T-shirts and fleece. The T-shirts are ninja themed and the fleeces have a new logo. The fleeces will be available for sale in the college’s newsletter so that alumni can purchase them. We will also be selling hooded sweatshirts with the College of Pharmacy on them. The annual Thanksgiving turkey dinner in Sioux Falls was held the Friday before Thanksgiving with the P3 and P2 brothers. The potluck style dinner was held at a house occupied by four P3 brothers. They provided the turkey as well as seating for nearly 40 people. We all ate till our stomachs were more than full of mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. Thanks to everyone for the delicious food. Gamma Kappa is currently in the middle of our annual Penny Wars. We collect pennies for the P2 class’s jar and silver coins for the P1 class’s. Last year we collected over $1,600 for local charities. We are also currently collecting clothing and canned goods for refugees in Sudan. —Mathew Macziewski

The fall semester has been full of activities for the brothers of Gamma Nu, both professionally and socially. The brothers began the semester with a wonderful retreat planned by first-year Henry Chang held at Folsom Lake, where the brothers strengthened their fraternal bonds around a raging campfire. The evening was highlighted by the return of third-year brothers and alumni, as well as the unforgettable sharing of Brother Mike Frank’s gourmet shrimp scampi, which has quickly become a mainstay of the Gamma Nu retreats. The brothers have also participated in an array of professional events around campus in addition to events hosted, most notably, by the American Heart Association and American Association of Retired Persons. Participation at the AHA Heart Walk included handling safety precautions by marking off the course for participant walkers, as well as pre-pharmacy Brother Brenden Whitt adorning the costume of the much admired “Ticker the Healthy Heart,” who is the mascot of AHA and recognizable object of affection for children around the world. The other notable community event was AARP’s outreach attempt called “The Brown Bag Event” in which AARP members would meet with a pharmacist and discuss their current medications. Volunteers at the event included first- and second-year brothers as

Socially, the second weekend of the school year was highlighted by the annual Red Rager event held in the pharmacy school courtyard. The social gathering was its largest in recent years, providing a memorable evening of dance and celebration, reminding many students there is indeed time to have fun in addition to the time spent studying. The brothers then hosted the annual Halloween Havoc social event the Friday before Halloween, which was an evening marked by starstudded appearances of characters such as “The Ghostbusters” and “Stay Puff, the Marshmallow Man” as well as “Underdog” and “Gumby.” —Scott Wong

Immediately following the regional meeting in Glendale, we kicked off an amazing semester!

The first weekend in October, many brothers volunteered for the American Diabetes Association to aid in their walk to “Step Out for Diabetes. We were able to help direct traffic, help walkers register, provide food and water at pit stops, and cheer on all of the supporters for diabetes research. The ADA was happy to have our help. Two of the pledge events we had this semester included a car wash with half of our proceeds going to diabetes research and a scavenger hunt. The hunt sent the pledges driving around Tucson to take their pictures with Tucson’s historic points and “things along the way. Our biannual slosh ball event was also in October and was probably one of our biggest turnouts ever! We even had a local park bum join in the fun. The end of October was celebrated with a Halloween/ Product Presentation social. The pledges formed groups and presented a health product in the form of a commercial to all of the current brothers. Now that was interesting, as all are in their Halloween costumes! Homecoming is always a large event at the University of Arizona. In keeping with tradition, the brothers of Kappa Psi were found bright and early at a local Tucson establishment called The Buffet. We gathered for some beverages, then moved on to the parade, tailgating, and, of course, the victorious football game!

Gamma Phi chapter never fails at being awesome. We had our annual Halloween party, which was huge. We mixed it up by giving out awards for categories such as funniest, naughtiest, most original, etc. Our alumni events drew several brothers back to Athens for food, fun, and fellowship. Our tailgates and our annual Low Country Boil are also reunions for alumni brothers both new and old. We’ve also stayed true to our causes, picking up trash for the Adopt-a-Highway program and sponsoring a blood drive for the American Red Cross. All the children came to our booth and had a blast playing tictac-toe against our own costumed brothers.

Delta Xi celebrated their 10th year anniversary on Saturday, October 27, 2007, at Bowling Green Country Club in Front Royal. The evening was greeted with numerous scrapbooks from previous years. The pictures in the scrapbook pages painted years of fun, experiences, and brotherhood among Kappa Psi members. Before the event started, various hors d’oeuvres were served while brothers mingled with faculty and alumni. Great food was also served for the dinner. The night included a presentation of plaques to faculty

attendees. A slide show presentation brought smiles to the alumni who were able to make it to the dinner. Raffle tickets were drawn for prizes ranging from DVDs to gift cards, with a grand prize of an iPod shuffle. The evening was a success. Thanks to Joe Lizer of the Virginia Farm Market for the generous donation of pumpkins for our annual pumpkin carving. Brothers had a great time creating masterpieces. It was an exciting day for some brothers since it was their first time carving pumpkins! The wonderfully carved pumpkins were then donated to Hillcrest Manor, a local nursing home. Delta Xi sponsored the annual bonfire and chili cook-off held at the property of Dr. Wendell Combest. Students and brothers had a blast making s’mores and watching scary movies. Thanks to Dr. Combest’s famous apple cider, the students were kept warm in front of a welcoming bonfire. He also gave the students a midnight tour through the forest on his property. It was a night to remember. Delta Xi had Dr. James M. McKenney as the honored guest lecturer for the Eugene V. White Distinguished Lecture Series. Dr. McKenney is the president and CEO of the National Clinical Research in Richmond, Virginia.

Winter 2008

The lecture was held on November 15 and was a huge success. The room was filled to maximum capacity! Attendants included Dr. and Mrs. Eugene White, numerous faculty members, and students. Dr. McKenney’s presentation on “One Man’s Journey in Pharmacy: From Office Practice to Clinical Research” was very informative and motivational to students. We were greatly honored to have Dr. McKenney as a guest lecturer. Delta Xi, along with American Pharmacist Association (APhA) and Phi Lambda Sigma (FLS), hosted the Medicare Part-D Day in November. This event was open to the public and students were available to assist the elderly with their insurance plans. Numerous senior citizens showed up for the event. Ankutse, Yonas Mengistu, and Bridget Mayer. Two of our new brothers, Amanda Spangler and Maggie Stgermain, are from the newly-opened Abilene campus. We kept our pledges busy with an indoor and outdoor scavenger hunt. After the outdoor scavenger hunt, we all met at the infamous Amarillo “Cadillac Ranch.” There, we were allowed to spray paint “Kappa Psi” onto the upside down Cadillacs. Our new brothers were all eager to join in and help with our chapter’s committees at our last meeting. For community service, we held a canned food drive for the Amarillo High Plains Food Bank. Our bin overflowed with canned foods, toothbrushes, soaps, and other toiletry items. Delta Pi also volunteered at the Amarillo Habitat for Humanity. We also participated in the “Vials of Life” at the St. Thomas Health Fair and taught many the benefits of owning a Vial of Life. Lots of thanks to our vice regent, Amma Akrofi, for setting up all of these community service projects. We would like to thank our social chair, Arvind Rangani, for great social events this semester. We started out with a paintball in September. Our brothers and new pledges got very colorful as we “paintballed” each other until the mosquitoes were too much to handle. In October, we enjoyed a fantastic birthday bowling tournament. November marked our annual Halloween party and birthday dinner. The Halloween party had a huge turnout and was lots of fun. Our Lubbock campus brothers reported having a great time during a rigorous cardio step workout at the recreational center. The brothers in Lubbock said the workout was hard work and sweat, but they needed the endorphins. Our Dallas campus brothers reported a great time also, except it was spent with roller coasters, funnel cakes, and cotton candy at the Dallas State Fair. —Andrea Haynes

We were honored to meet our Grand Regent, Dr. Lawrence Brown, who was also present at this joyous event. Community involvement is of great importance to our chapter. Therefore, Delta Rho was happy to participate in both the Blow the Whistle on Asthma Walk and the Step Out to Fight Diabetes Walk-athon. We’ve held two road cleanups at our adopted stretch of highway. We’re also proud to say that Kappa Psi was well represented through our donation of time and food to the Ronald McDonald House charity. Each pledge discovered who their big brother was once they completed their own scavenger hunt. We had our first movie night which took place in our very own classroom, equipped with a large screen and theater-style seating. Much credit has to be given to our Graduate Relations Committee and its chair, Charly Blackmon, for their work this semester. They have worked hard in compiling information about our graduate brothers so we can not only keep them up to date as to what our chapter is doing, but also provide them information about graduate chapters in their area. They also spearheaded the production of our first chapter newsletter that went out in October. On August 23, 2007, Brother Katie Kiefer and her husband Kevin welcomed baby Kyle into the world. Congratulations to them! We were privileged to initiate honorary Brother Gina Jules, a second year faculty member at Palm Beach Atlantic University, into our Fraternity. Brother Jules is a graduate of FAMU and is sure to be a great asset to our chapter. As our 100 hands have been working to do great things for our chapter internally, we have also taken strides to help in the community and within our school. In October, Delta Phi kicked off its rush period with a barbecue and bonfire at scenic La Jolla Shores. To break the ice, brothers taped questions such as “Ask me about my sugar daddy” to their backs. Rushes could ask about the questions to stimulate interesting conversation. As the sun set over the Pacific, the brothers kindled a beach bonfire from the warmth of their fraternal bonds (assisted by

copious amounts of lighter fluid) and exchanged inspiring tales of brotherhood. Knowing how stressful the first Pharmacy Practice midterm could be, brothers created the first Delta Phi Pharmapalooza Jeopardy game to help first-year pharmacy students prepare for their test and expose them to Kappa Psi activities. P1s competed to outdo each other in demonstrating their pharmacy knowledge. The brothers accomplished their aims in reinforcing

essential test material and reinvigorating their interest in pharmacy. Towards the end of October, wildfires in San Diego forced the closure of the UCSD campus and drove thousands of people out of their homes and into evacuation centers. Not content to stand idle, the Delta Phi brothers assisted with relief efforts at San Diego evacuation centers including the Del Mar Fairgrounds, The Rock Church, and Qualcomm Stadium. For an entire week, the brothers manned the makeshift pharmacies at the evacuation centers and organized themselves to ensure that someone would always be present to help the evacuees receive their medications. We would like to thank the brothers who generously donated their time to make a positive impact on the San Diego community. Province V The Province V Midyear assembly was held October 12–13, 2007, in Toledo, Ohio. Beta Lambda chapter hosted the assembly, and there were 107 brothers in attendance for the weekend. It was also an honor to have Grand Counselor Andrew Frasco, Graduate Member-at-Large Peter Brody, and Immediate Past Grand Regent Dave Maszkiewicz in attendance. The assembly began Friday evening with the opening ritual and welcomes from satrap Erin Walsh and Beta Lambda regent Eric Geyer. Graduate and collegiate

chapters that were present gave their respective reports. Beta Lambda brothers escorted us to dinner at Tony Packo’s (a Toledo favorite). Many brothers were found at the local establishments later in the evening in the Glass City. The next day, officer reports were kicked off by Tim Borowiak who thanked brothers for attending the 53rd GCC in Boston. Webmaster Jen Suminski discussed the photo page, chat room, and requested new pictures from all the chapters. Parliamentarian Dominic Chan discussed his goals of creating an abridged Robert’s Rules and discussed creating a uniform Province V risk management policy. Historian Kate Nelson requested pictures from brothers in attendance and asked to include as many brothers in the slideshows. A slideshow was presented from Province 2007 at Pi Chapter and the 53rd GCC. A letter was read from chaplain Craig Burkin who talked about the Chapter of the Year form and encouraged brothers to use the ritual to open and close meetings. Secretary-Treasurer Lindsey Berlinghoff thanked brothers for the updated chapter officer contact information; GCC checks for collegiate chapters present this summer in Boston, and the Chapter of the Year form. Vice satrap Neil Patel requested a professional contract and summary of service form from each chapter. Province VII Our first newsletter was recently distributed. We hope to increase chapter participation with each edition! The deadline for the next submission will be March 1. Email any submissions to aroberts@stlcop.edu. Chapters should also continue uploading photos to the Province VII photo bucket account at www.photobucket.com, login Province 7. Contact historian Anastasia Roberts for the password. One of our goals as a Province is to re-establish Gamma Gamma chapter at the University of Texas–Austin. However, interest must be expressed from students before the administration will allow Kappa Psi on campus. If you know any students from UT, please share your Kappa Psi experience with them. Hopefully, we can impress the importance of the need for a Kappa Psi chapter on them just by

being brotherly. If you have special interest in this, please contact one of the Province VII officers. —Anastasia Roberts

Province VIII Greetings from the brothers of Province VIII. In October, we held our biannual Conclave in Iowa City. Delta Zeta brothers hosted the festivities under the direction of Karen Hora. Registration totaled 192 brothers. Unfortunately, Beta Sigma brothers were unable to make it, but we look forward to seeing them at the next Conclave. We are thankful to the brothers who came from other Provinces. A special thanks goes out to Karen, Delta Zeta, and all of those who made the weekend a huge success. Friday night, brothers enjoyed the Viva Las Vegas theme dance. Brothers dressed up like brides and grooms and played cards, dice, and gambled. Saturday morning began at 8:30 with a delicious breakfast. Satrap Meagan Wilson promptly called the business meeting to order. Brother Sam Lee of Epsilon, who was the GCC Province VIII delegate, gave her follow-up report. All the Province officers gave their reports as well. Following a short break, the always informational and ever so entertaining chapter reports were given. After the chapter

reports were finished, the pledges in attendance participated in an informational session given by Tracy Anderson-Haag (Sprout) and Adam Gregg. The session involved a Kappa Psi jeopardy game, where pledges got quizzed on history. Finally, we held elections. Congratulations to Dena Kroska, satrap; Sam Lee, vice satrap; Shannon Cameron, chaplain; and Amanda Weber, historian. The graduate brothers who went to GCC took the collegiate brothers who also attended out for lunch that afternoon. It was a great way for the collegiate and graduate brothers to mingle and get to know each other better. The Peanut Gallery and Iowa Grad chapter also met that afternoon. Saturday evening provided more insight on brotherhood and fellowship at the banquet dinner. Associate Dean of the College of Pharmacy from the University of Iowa, Dr. Mike Kelly, gave a warm welcome to start off the evening. As everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner, Brother Dr. Jeff Reist gave an inspirational speech on Balance and Brotherhood. The Graduate Development chair, Jennifer Friehe, honored Karen Hora with a recognition pin for all her hard work in planning the Province assembly. In addition, Brother Friehe recognized Tony Nguyen from Delta Zeta and Sean Donahoe from Gamma Kappa with the Province VIII Graduate Development Awards. Lastly, the ever so coveted Golden Peanut was presented to Delta Zeta with their creative Lego movie, which was enjoyed by all. Sam Lee presented the traveling trophy to Beta Chi, who had greater than 50 percent of their chapter in the morning meeting. Brother Adam Gregg gave out two Iowa Graduate Scholarships to Beta Chi’s Kelly Zieman and Delta Zeta’s Tony Nguyen. Keeper of the Hoe, Sprout, presented the Hoe on behalf of her husband Mike to Sandy Johnson. The Hoe does have a new addition, which is a new bottle opener attachment. Sean Higgins and Darin Scheele presented a new award, the Province VIII Golden Conclave Award, to Brother Brian C. Reisetter. This was Brian’s 50th attended Conclave. He was also presented with a Kappa Psi hockey jersey. Congratulations

Winter 2008

Brian! To sum up all the awards, Dena Kroska recognized immediate past satrap, Meagan Wilson, for her hard work the past two years as satrap. The Saturday evening finale was themed “favorite performer.” Costumes ranged from Hugh Heffner and his Bunnies and Chippendales to performers seen on the street at GCC and Flava Flav. Everyone appeared to have an outstanding time at this Province assembly. The next Conclave will be April 18–19, 2008, in Brookings, South Dakota. I hope to see everyone there in support of Gamma Kappa’s 50th anniversary. —Amanda Weber

Province IX Province IX proudly reports that our brothers have been busy giving back to the community. This year our Province philanthropy is raising funds for donation to research treatment of leukemia and lymphomas. Additionally, the brothers of Province IX are using this project to as an opportunity to fraternize between chapters. To accomplish our goal of raising money and increase brotherly bonds, brothers from two or more chapters that are near each other are participating in local walks and collecting sponsor donations from the community. Our next Province meeting will take place in Stockton, California, at the end of March. With the last Province meeting (held in Glendale, Arizona) being such a success, the bar is set high for our brothers at Gamma Nu. We are all anxiously awaiting to get down to business and reunite with friends in Stockton. The plans are well on their way and an incredible $2,500 in donations has already been received from generous contributions made by CVS Pharmacies and Walgreens. The meeting itself will take place within the school of pharmacy, and we will dine on the Moores Riverboat for our closing banquet. It is my pleasure to announce that we will be awarding another scholarship soon! Discussion is underway to determine the deadline of application for our $250 Province IX Scholarship which will be awarded to an active brother who demonstrates commitment to the Fraternity and the profession. —Elizabeth Sarles
