‘The Lord Mayor’s Coronation Party’ will take place in the Peace Gardens on Saturday 6 May, with The King’s Concert taking place on Sunday 7 May, where the whole of the gardens will be decorated red, white and blue for a series of exciting events.

Councillor Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “The Kings Coronation will be a fantastic two-day celebration in Sheffield, where everyone can bring their picnic blankets and watch the action live from a big screen.

“For many, this will be a once in a lifetime occurrence, so we want to put on a big show. I always love to see crowds gathering, celebrating together and having fun, and this is exactly what this weekend will be about –celebration.

“Live bands will be playing, there’ll be entertainment, bars and restaurants will be involved and there will l be such a patriotic atmosphere, I can’t wait.”

A staged area will be the focal point for live musical performances such as brass bands, swing bands and more, playing music from a range of genres to appeal to all ages. These performances will take place before and after the live broadcast of the

Coronation.

On Sunday 7 May, The King’s Concert will be broadcast live from Windsor. The centrepiece of the Coronation Concert, ‘Lighting up the Nation’, will see the country join together in celebration as iconic locations across the United Kingdom are lit up using projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations.

Councillor Terry Fox added: “We’re also encouraging people to host their own street parties, where we will support you with road closures, there’s the Coronation Big Lunch on 7 May where communities can come together to celebrate and on 8 May is the Big Help Out, encouraging everyone to get involved with volunteering – we will be supporting communities to celebrate all three of these events.”

Alongside this, £5,000 will be allocated to each Local Area Committee to help fund community celebrations.

This week the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Sioned-Mair Richards, has confirmed that an Extraordinary Meeting will be held to discuss the implications of the street tree inquiry.

The Lord Mayor has made the following statement:

“After considering a request from members of the Green group, I can confirm that an Extraordinary Meeting will be held to discuss the implications of the street tree inquiry.

“Sir Mark Lowcock has written a thorough and evidence-based report.

In it he has stated ‘If the lessons [of the report] are to be learned, they will need to be fully discussed by the Council and others and then acted upon’. This is what I hope the Extraordinary Meeting will begin to do.

“It is vitally important that the Council takes the time to ensure all interested parties can contribute fully, that those voices who have a stake in this can be engaged and heard, and that this meeting properly meets the needs of the city. I will formally announce the date and agenda in the near future, once we have had the opportunity to consider the format this meeting will take.

“Having taken advice from the Chief Executive and the Monitoring Officer I cannot call this meeting during the preelection period, and we expect the meeting to be held on 10 May 2023, which will allow for a full debate.

“It is positive that there has already been an initial public discussion about the street tree inquiry report. I hope that the Extraordinary Meeting will provide an opportunity for all views to be heard and a way forward for everyone to be developed. “I will provide further information as soon as possible.”
