The Region’s Number One

John Burkhill “The man with the pram” has today met his staggering target of £1million raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

For 26 years now, John has set out on marathon after marathon to raise money for Macmillan, after losing both his wife and daughter in 1991. The whole city has passed on its congratulations, while John had tears in his eyes after finally reaching the magic mark. And indeed, there are now calls from across the community for John to be rewarded with a knighthood! John has twice been recognised

by the Palace - being awarded a BEM in 2013, and then having the rare distinction of a “bar” added in 2020. Also in January of this year, his efforts were marked by the presentation of a British Citizen’s Award. But despite reaching the milestone, the inspirational 83-year-old has vowed not to stop his efforts, but will continue to push his pram round the streets of Sheffield - perhaps £2 million is not beyond the realms of possibility?

Councillor Tom Hunt, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Raising £1 million is an incredible achievement

and a testament to John’s selflessness and determination. John’s charity work is known across Sheffield and beyond. I know the

whole city is so proud of him. With his Freedom of the City status, I’m sure he’s walked across every inch of this city with his green wig and pram. We

commend John on his dedication to Macmillan Cancer Support. His

Cl AIRE’S mARAThON EFFORT FOR ThE lOST ChORD

The hills were alive with the sound of music and so were the historic streets of Salzburg as Clare Langan completed one of the world’s most picturesque marathons on a high note.

Clare, the chief executive of South Yorkshire music and dementia charity Lost Chord UK, headed the organisation’s monthlong Superhero Challenge by donning her Wonder Woman costume and taking part in the famous Salzburg Marathon. She chose the Austrian city’s sporting event for its strong musical links - it is not only the birthplace of Mozart but is also the setting for classic musical The Sound of Music.

“Hardly a Lost Chord UK

sessions goes by without someone requesting Climb every Mountain or Edelweiss,” Clare said. And she also made sure there was plenty more to sing about as she approached the finish line by producing her flute and treating the crowds to a rousing chorus of Scotland the Brave!

Clare’s superhero efforts have already raised more than £2,800 for the charity that provides vital interactive music sessions for people living with dementia in care homes and day centres across the region and nationally.

“I felt there was no better setting for promoting the incredible work that Lost Chord UK’s musicians are doing than in one of

Europe’s most musical cities - and the fact that it’s also billed as a fairly flat marathon did help me make my choice too,” Clare admitted. “It wasn’t easy and I was glad to get to the finish, especially as at one point I really did think I was having a heart attack! But I met some incredible people on the route and we all agreed we would help each other get to the finish line. It helped too that the route went through the most beautiful scenery and people were cheering us all the way - it is something I will never forget my entire life.”

Clare is now taking a break from running but admits she would take up the marathon challenge

again - especially if a corporate were to offer match funding and so double the fundraising total. “They do say that only one per cent of the population will complete

a marathon but if I can do it, anybody who has an inkling they can do it probably can and that could make a massive difference to the work we are doing at Lost Chord

UK,” she said. There’s still time to support Clare by visiting https://www.justgiving. com/page/clare-langansalzburgmarathon2023

News, Information and Advice

pc’s bravery award

Eight Barnsley police officers who disarmed a man who pointed a loaded crossbow at them have won a South Yorkshire Police Federation Bravery Awards.

PC Adam Craven, PC Austin Ainsworth, PC James Thornton, PC Anthony Cole, PC Alex Furniss, PC Amy Needham, Temp Sgt Michael Beet and Sgt Alun Oliver de-escalated the incident in May 2021. PC Cole was on duty with former PC Jones, who has since left the service. PC Cole saw a man pointing a loaded crossbow at them in Barnsley town centre. The offender dropped the crossbow but picked it up again as the officers went for it. So they took cover while PC Jones called for urgent assistance. The rest of the team arrived to help their colleagues, made a shield barrier and forced the offender out of the town centre. He finally put down the crossbow but climbed over the barrier of a bridge, where Sgt Oliver negotiated him to safety. PC Cole then arrested him. PC Cole was instrumental in bringing the case before the Crown Prosecution Service. He also intercepted and recovered another crossbow and ammunition that the offender had ordered online after the original incident.

The offender was handed a 12-month sentence suspended for 24 months for having an offensive weapon in a public place.

Judge Peter Kelson QC said of the officers’ actions: “Their courage on the night in dealing with this case was simply staggering. They pursued their duty with astonishing courage and are a credit to the force.” PC Cole said: “PC Jones and I didn’t have Tasers, we had nothing but us, really.

Heat warninG for pets

The man said he wanted to die, at the same time as pointing that thing at us. We just concentrated on keeping his attention on us and saying, ‘Look, it’s not going to work. You’re not going to get shot because we haven’t got anything’. It was a dangerous incident that we all dealt with. We worked as a team and we came out of it unscathed, so it’s good to be recognised for the work that we put in.”

His colleague PC Ainsworth said:

“Crossbows are as powerful as a gun. Our instincts kicked in –you want to help your colleagues and you don’t really think about your own safety, it happens so fast. So we got out of the van and I started trying to get the PSU shields out. But we were told afterwards that if he’d fired it, it would have gone straight through the riot shield.”

Sgt Oliver said of the arrest: “I’m a trained negotiator, so I switched roles then, from public order sergeant into the negotiator role. I talked him off the side of the bridge, we got him back over the fence, and then detained him under the Mental Health Act. It was a very young shift so we’d got a lot of very inexperienced officers. Looking at their faces, there was a lot of relief that they’d been successful, everybody was safe, and that we’d got the weapon back and got the subject.” Sgt Oliver added: “I’m humbled to receive this award. A lot of people do a lot of good things, on a daily basis. We’re paid to run towards the threat, and that’s what we did.”

Dogs Trust, the nation’s largest dog welfare charity, is warning dog owners that “twenty is plenty” when it comes to exercising dogs this summer. They have issued guidance that exercising dogs in temperatures as mild as 21 degrees centigrade can be problematic for dogs, particularly brachycephalic, or “flatfaced”, breeds such as English Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs. In fact, according to recent research English Bulldogs are fourteen times more likely to suffer heatrelated illness compared to Labrador Retrievers. While most dog lovers will be aware that extreme weather and heatwaves can be dangerous –sometimes even deadly – for dogs, many will be unaware that exercising dogs in early summer temperatures as low as 21 degrees can cause heatstroke in dogs. In some cases, heatstroke can prove fatal. Dogs Trust has issued the following advice to support dog owners this summer:

• Avoid walking or doing activities either indoors or outdoors with your dog at the hottest times of the day, so early morning or later in the evening is often best.

• Always take plenty of water with you when out with your dog and make sure they have access to fresh water at home at all times.

• Tarmac can get very hot in the sun – check it with your hand before letting your dog walk on it so they don’t burn their paws. Try the ‘five-second test’ – if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for

your dog’s paws.

• If you cannot avoid taking your dog out in the car on a hot day, even if travelling a short distance, avoid travelling during the hottest times of the day.

• Never leave your dog in a vehicle on a warm day. Not even with the window open.

• Use a cooling mat or wrap an ice pack or frozen water bottle in a tea towel for your pet to lie on if they wish.

• Use cold treats from the fridge for added moisture or make an ice lolly from pet-friendly ingredients.

• Don’t let your pet get sunburnt - use pet-safe sun cream.

• Know the early signs of heatstroke which include panting, difficulty breathing, tiredness, less keen to play, drooling and vomiting, and take immediate action. Dogs Trust also advises that dogs should never be left alone in cars as even just a few minutes in a hot car can prove fatal. On a 22-degree Celsius day, the temperature inside a car could rise by eleven degrees in just ten minutes and as dogs can’t cool down the same way as humans, the heat can quickly become dangerous for them. If you see a dog in a car in distress, the charity advises that members of the public call 999. Paula Boyden of Dogs Trust, says: “It’s great to see the sun shining; it feels like summer has finally arrived. But while this weather might be great for us, hot weather can cause problems for our canine friends.

family business offers complete funeral service

Eric Eyre Funeral Service understands how difficult the process of planning a funeral for a loved one can be and offer a bespoke funeral service, whilst continuing to uphold traditional values.

Established since 1864, Eric took over the business in 1955 and has been looking after families in the local community and surrounding areas of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham ever since, with branches at High Green and Sheffield Lane Top.

Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with decades of experience in guiding bereaved clients through this difficult time, Eric Eyre provide a professional yet personal service, caring for you and your loved ones while facilitating the necessary funeral arrangements and ensuring your wishes are carried out with care and compassion. Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter. That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “

With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as

manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years of service I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted.

In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.”

Completing the team at High Green is Sharon Clayton and Kay Cooper, while Beverley Travis and Ruth Fenlon look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago.

“Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.”

If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

First established in 1865, Eric Eyre has personally looked after families in the local communities of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham since 1955.

Operating from branches in High Green and Sheffield Lane Top we offer a bespoke funeral service upholding traditional values whilst progressing to cater for modern, personalised customer requirements.

richard hawLey catcheS a ride on the bLockbuSter buS!

Hot on the heels of Reverend and the Makers and Self Esteem, the singer-songwriter becomes the third Sheffield star to take on First Bus’ “Blockbuster Driving Challenge”.

With no licence to his name and the admission that he’s “never even been behind the wheel of a car before in my life”, Richard Hawley surprised even himself when he drove a bus for the first time. After a tour of the First Bus’ Olive Grove depot in Sheffield, Richard along with two members of his touring band (Dean Berresford and Jon Trier), were invited to test-drive their iconic buses on the offroad training track. And what’s more they were asked to do it all blindfolded.

One of Sheffield’s most highly respected musical talents, Richard Hawley has been

selected as part of First Bus’ brand new ‘Walk of Fame’ project - a new initiative that celebrates the greats of the city’s music scene. Honouring the singer-songwriter and what he has brought to the city, the public transport titan will be redecorating their familiar First Buses in Hawley’s signature stylings. Watch out for them hitting the streets in the coming weeks.

Speaking about the scheme, Ian Smith, commercial director at First Sheffield says: “As a company we are proud of our connection to the great city of Sheffield and all those people involved in carrying its name both locally and across the world. They show that the words ‘Made in Sheffield’ still mean something to be proud of.

We are teaming up with famous and not-so-famous artists who

have put Sheffield firmly on the map and who have all, and still do, use the public transport network across the city when they are home.”

A new initiative for 2023, the ‘Sheffield’s Walk of Fame’ project will see First Bus Sheffield giving their bus fleet a fresh makeover in celebration of the city’s most famous musical stars. Special buses dedicated to Reverend and the Makers, Self Esteem, the legendary Leadmill music and others already in motion. As part of the initiative, each artist involved was also invited to take on the ‘Blockbuster Driving Challenge’ at the home of First Bus in Olive Grove. Taking on several driving manoeuvres and challenges, including driving down a course blindfolded, each challenge sees hilarious moments, choice words and trepidation as the

legends join the Rock’n’Roll journey in Sheffield. Standby for news on more artists to be announced soon. Recently winning two Olivier awards for his musical ’Standing At The Sky’s Edge’, this Summer Richard Hawley will join his

former bandmates in Pulp on their Sheffield Arena comeback shows, as well as opening for them with his own band. Charting numerous critically acclaimed albums throughout his career, including his most recent solo record ‘Further’

(2019), Richard’s music is also confirmed as soon to be appearing in the new Tom Hanks film ‘Asteroid City’ (dir. Wes Anderson) and also of course the Disney+ remake of ‘The Full Monty’.

Dave Kelly & Bob Hall with Hilary Blythe Dave Kelly & Bob Hall with Hilary Blythe

SATURDAY 17TH JUNE 2023

SHOW STARTS 7:30PM TICKETS: ADULT £22.00 / CON £20.00

Friends since they were neighbours in the sixties Dave Kelly & Bob Hall have had illustrious careers in the British Blues Scene and have won many awards for their artistry. Dave Kelly, singer, guitarist and songwriter, is a founder member of The Blues Band (which has recently celebrated its 40th anniversary). Dave cut his teeth in the backing bands of Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker, and has played with Buddy Guy, Son House & Muddy Waters. The Blues Band have released around twenty albums, and Dave has fifteen more either solo or with his own Dave Kelly Band Bob Hall, singer, pianist and songwriter, is a founder member of The Groundhogs and Savoy Brown. Bob has also accompanied Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker and a host of blues stars including Little Walter, Lightnin’ Slim and Homesick James. Bob has played on well over a hundred albums, including four solo piano albums and dozens more as band leader or co-leader. Down the years Dave and Bob have had a number of critically acclaimed joint projects, have played in each other’s bands and on each other’s records. With such a pedigree it seemed natural to get together a show to exploit their joint talents. Complimenting the duo is Hilary Blythe on bass, an emotive singer of classic blues and Bob’s partner off-stage. Hilary’s rock-solid bass has been part of the A-Team, accompanying Lil’ Jimmy Reed on his UK and international tours.

BladEs U21s losE oUt in Final

A dramatic Josh Windass header in the final minute of extra time sealed Wednesday’s return to the Championship on a dramatic afternoon at Wembley.

Windass followed in the footsteps of his father Dean in deciding a play-off final as the Owls soared back to the second tier in incredible style.

Opponents Barnsley were reduced to 10 men when Adam Phillips saw red early in the second half and Will Vaulks thought he had won the tie only to see a superb strike ruled out for an offside flag. But Wednesday persevered and were rewarded right at the last to seal promotion. All the action was after a relatively incidentfree opening period.

Barry Bannan and Dominic Iorfa had half-chances, the latter of which was saved at point blank range by Harry Isted. Barnsley were limited to pot shots from range and the occasional set piece and both sides essentially cancelled

each other out. But the cagey nature of the first half gave way to an explosive start to the second.

Barnsley came out of the traps apace but were promptly halted in their tracks when Phillips was dismissed our minutes in. The midfielder launched into a tackle with Lee Gregory that was deemed dangerous and the referee reached to his pocket. The Reds were undaunted and pushed forward, almost taking the lead from their next attack.Nicky

Cadden’s hit from the edge of the area was going wide but Liam Kitching directed a clever header that smashed against the crossbar. Cameron Dawson kept out Cadden at his near post moments later before Bannan curled wide as Wednesday countered. Then the Owls went closer still – Marvin Johnson delivered a teasing low delivery that Jordan Williams deflected goalwards and Isted was alive to the situation and

sprung across his line to palm clear. It was Dawson’s turn to excel in the closing stages with a stunning stop to deny James Norwood, whose angled drive had real venom. That was the final action of the regular 90 and to extra time the final went.Wednesday sought to make the numerical advantage count, forcing Barnsley deep into their own half.

Michael Ihiekwe’s header was hoofed off the line by Mads Andersen and Bannan brushed the top of the net with a half volley from distance. Isted denied Smith at close quarters with a flying save, then Bannan from right on the edge of the box. Then from nowhere Barnsley broke and spurned a golden opportunity to break the deadlock. A swift four-man move saw the ball land at the feet of Luca Connell in oceans of

space in the box but the Irishman sliced wide.Wembley heard a raucous Wednesday roar in the second half of extra time when Vaulks rippled the back of the net with a rasping shot that gave Isted no chance – but a raised flag cut short the wild celebrations. Lee Gregory was thwarted by a last-ditch Andersen tackle as the Owls pressed forward in the closing stages and the tie seemed destined for penalties. But then came the ultimate drama.

Gregory cut back high for Windass, who stooped to aim a firm header past Isted and send 44,000 Owls into delirium. There was barely time for the restart, Barnsley did the honours without further time for a move forward, before the curtain came down on an match and season to remember.

United’s Under 21s fell to defeat in the Professional Development League National final in a closely fought encounter with southern league champions Millwall in a match which went through 120 minutes. In front of a strong crowd at The Den, the hosts made the better start and took the lead after just 11 minutes when a rebound was slammed home from close range by Romain Esse after Luke Faxon saved a curling effort from Aidomo Emakhu. United weathered the early story and started to fight back after 25 minutes when Sydie Peck smashed a half volley just wide before Louie Marsh did similar from the left after cutting inside and sending a shot just past

the far post. The chances kept coming towards the break as both Peck and Andre Brooks saw shots blocked, before Brooks saw a curling effort come back off the crossbar before Louie Marsh was denied by a good save on the rebound. Will Osula also saw a close-range effort blocked in first half stoppage time and while the Blades looked to take that momentum into the second half, it was Millwall who had a huge chance when Emakhu somehow hit the post at point-blank range. Ten minutes later it was game on when Peck tapped home after a brilliant curling effort from Osula hit the post, came back off the keeper and allowed the midfielder to slot home the equaliser. Momentum was with

the Blades as Brooks, Sai Sachdev and Osula were all denied by Wright before Jili Buyabu fired over the crossbar, with the game moving into extra-time. Both sides struggled with cramp during a stop-start half an hour, with United introducing the fresh legs of Levis Pitan, Charlie Staniland and Josh Smith. Osula saw a spectacular overhead kick deflected over before the hosts struck the decisive blow just before the break when a free-kick from the left was headed home at the back post by Millwall captain Okoli. The Blades poured forward as the second half was largely played in the Millwall half, with Peck seeing several efforts from range saved and Brooks saw a shot blocked by some

last-ditch defending, as time ran out on United’s PDL campaign.

Mickey Collins: “It’s a difficult one to take. A long gruelling season with so many positives and unfortunately, at the last step, we couldn’t quite get it done. When the emotion settles, I’m sure we will appreciate that as a collective group. “Tonight, we started a bit nervy and lacked our usual composure early on. Once we settled, I thought we dominated for large parts. When that’s the case you have to put the opposition away. “Credit to Millwall, they are resolute and they hang on in there. They don’t lie down. In the end, as always, fine margins made the difference.”
