FREEING THE LOST: Rescue Kabataan reaches out to Metrians

Vaping can be one’s sweet escape from reality and pressure, yet this can be one’s subtle form of self-destruction.

For Johary, a Grade 8 student, this is his coping mechanism while struggling with personal and academic struggles, candidly sharing how his peers have influenced him to vape at an incredibly early age.

“Gitry nako mag vape kay ginabuhat man nila,” he said. “It’s not that I enjoy vaping, it’s the thought that I belong because

I engage in the same activities as they do,” Johary stated in Filipino while fiddling with his fingers.

The 14-year-old is part of the extensive participation in the Rescue Kabataan Gensan Program, which is currently being piloted at Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas.

According to its founder, Mrs. Abegail Reymundo, the organization is an NGO affiliated with the Department of Education Central Office, with a mission to rescue youth from various

challenges including addiction, substance abuse, sexual exploitation, and teenage pregnancy.

“Our mission is to rescue them from the darkest moments, sa mga pinagdadaanan nila na feeling nila walang handang makinig sa kanila. Rescue Kabataan is a safe place for them,” the founder voiced.

Through consistent participation in the organization’s activities, Johary realizes the harmful impact of his past behaviors on his mental and physical well-being.

“Rescue Kabataan has been of powerful help. Although I initially didn’t think vaping would be bad, it can be a cause of my demise in the following years,” he claimed in Filipino.

As the program progresses towards its aims, Mrs. Reymundo expects that young participants will embody the qualities of a responsible Filipino citizen, emphasizing the importance of being Makadiyos, Makatao, Makakalikasan, Makabansa, and Makatotohanan, following their engagement with Rescue Kabataan sessions.

Santiago National High School’s Metrian Hall, January 30. Alkuino expressed his full support to the Metrian writers for the Division Schools Press Conference through a two-day practicum, emphasizing the need for practice and enhancement to produce quality output.

Alkuino also noted that everything can be learned and mastered through time.

The speaker left his words of wisdom and encouragement to the young writers, believing that everything is possible.

“Everything in the world is possible; only the close-minded makes things impossible,” he concluded.

IBREAKING CHAINS: Empowering mental health

Following the devastating residential fire at Dadiangas East, Irineo L. Santiago National High School’s Red Cross Youth volunteers took swift action to help the affected residents through Project Sagwan Donation Drive, conducted 22nd of December 2023

Various contributors, such as the Philippine Red Cross Gensan-Sarangani Chapter Welfare Services, Red Cross Youth - GenSar Chapter, and few Red Cross Youth Division-Wide School Councils, displayed unity and community spirit, spreading, and providing essential aid and services to those in need during the holiday season.

Nhordaliza Musa, the Senior Red Cross Youth President, believes that through Project Sagwan, student leaders and locals will be empowered to contribute to the betterment of our community through their services and donations.

“Witnessing the situation of those affected clenched our hearts. That is why we started Project Sagwan to empower Metrian learners and locals willing to contribute essential needs to those in the evacuation area to somehow make up for the things they have lost,” Musa said.

The volunteers were stationed at a secure location in Camia Street, overseeing the gathered contributions from the Metrians and the local community.

ntensifying understanding during the Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, district nurses, faculty, administrative staff, students and metrian leaders from the Supreme Student Learner Government (SSLG), Teen Support Group (TSG), Barkada Kontra Droga, Youth for Environment in Schools-Organization (YES-O), Red Cross Youth, and Boy Scouts of the Philippines, united in a simultaneous candlelight prayer ceremony held at the Metrian gymnasium on September 15, 2023. Themed with “Creating Hope Through Action”, the momentous candlelight prayer served as a powerful symbol of unity and support for those who might be grappling with thoughts of suicide or facing mental health challenges.

Together, the metrian learners joined hands, seeking healing, understanding, and the strength to overcome adversity.

This occasion sought to alter public perceptions, instill hope, and share vital information with individuals affected by suicide.

“As a student who also suffers from suicidal thoughts, I appreciated the simultaneous prayers in every classroom, which made me think that the school really cares for its students,” a metrian said.

This initiative was designed to enhance awareness surrounding preventable mental health conditions by ensuring that timely support is easily accessible to educators, learners, and other school staff, thus fostering a positive school environment.

GO Green Breath Clean KICK-START OF A NEW MANGROVE REVOLUTION

Celebrating the success of the first division-wide mangrove revolution facilitated by the Youth for Environment in Schools-Organization (YES-O) Schools Division of General Santos City and YES-O Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas (ILSNHSMD), along with 100 to 120 participants, a hundred seedlings were planted to benefit nearby communities and marine life, at Zone 6 Barangay Bula, Mangrove Sanctuary, January 20, 2024.

With full and unwavering support from Ma’am Iris R. Visaya, Principal I of ILSNHSMD, Sir Ronald S. Radin, Education Program Supervisor in Programs and Projects, Sir Julius L. Urbano, Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer (DRRMO), Mr. Ernesto Vigafria, YFD Project Development Officer 1 for Learner Formation, and Mr. Herven Allado, SEPS in School Mobilization and Networking (SMN), participants delved into eco-excitement with mangrove lectures, insightful marine litter discussions by Ms. Chrizza Mae P. Britanico from DENR XII PAMB. Additionally, a dynamic clean-up drive, mangrove

planting, propagule harvesting, and the artful practice of propagule bagging were put into swift action.

The Mangrove Revolution not only helps preserve our coastline but also provides a habitat for marine life and helps mitigate the effects of climate change. It’s a simple yet powerful way to make a positive effect on the environment.

Ma’am Meai G. Mendoza, Metrian YES-O Coordinator urged the students, teachers, and stakeholders to be part of our next Mangrove Revolution activity and help make a difference for our planet.

“Let’s join hands and continue to protect and preserve our coastal areas through education and action. Let us walk our talk, and together, we can make a significant impact,” she deeply emphasized.

Disaster Preparedness: National simultaneous earthquake drills 2023

As part of the 2023 National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED), all schools nationwide, spearheaded by The Department of Education (DepEd), participated during the simultaneous drills, inclusive dates from March 9 to November 9, 2023.

This National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill is an activity that assesses the efficiency of local government units, offices, and schools’ preparedness, response, recovery plans, systems, and policies, and further evaluates the effectiveness of the contingency plan; and assesses the coordination and communication mechanisms during response operations.

Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro. Dadiangas took part in the Simultaneous Earthquake Drill, along with its teachers, staff, and Metrian learners, headed SDRRM officers Sir Edgar Guanzon and Ma’am Marysol Christie B. Echavia.

The activity was facilitated by the Supreme Student Learner

Government, School’s Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction Management, Red Cross Youth, Youth for Environment in School-Organization, and Boy Scouts of the Philippines.

“The earthquake drill that was conducted here really helped me during that strong earthquake, though we panicked but we were still safe and didn’t get any injury,” Norhanifa Salic, a Metrian student expressed.

We can remember that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 hit Mindanao last November 17, 2023. This tragedy brought distress to the Generals but proven how prepared and resilient we are as a community, more importantly, the bravery and alertness of the Metrians.

“I commend the Metrian learners especially the leaders of each organization who helped during the drill, they had a sense of leadership and of course, the urgency and alertness, which they showed during the strong earthquake,” SSLG Vice President Lorhien Shaine Boiser voiced.

METRIAN ROBOTICS TRIUMPHS: SECURES DIVISION RESEARCH FAIR CHAMPIONSHIP

Metrian STEM robotics team bags the championship title after presenting the “BLINKFAST” prototype during the Division-wide Research on Science and Technology Fair, in Dadiangas West Elementary school, November 11, 2023.

The arduino-based prototype, according to its creators, is an eyepiece that monitors the blinking duration of drivers and alerts the system after detecting fatigue in its user using a blinking sensor.

The inventive minds, Christian Sala, Kent Lorega, and Rogelio Tapis secured their spot after two rounds of research defense, before claiming the championship title in Investigatory

Project Intelligent Machine (Team Category).

According to Christian Sala, the team leader, they had experienced a lack of preparation before and during the contest.

“Nakulangan kami ng oras. We were extremely nervous before the event started because we were not prepared,” he expressed.

Irineo secures 2nd place as Division’s best SNDS implementer

Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas won 2nd place during the Division-Wide Search for the 2023 Best SNDS Implementing School, to cultivate ongoing assistance that adapts to the needs of the students, published on October 24, 2023.

The School Needs Data System (SNDS) plays a crucial role in facilitating the supervision and administration of contributions from diverse stakeholders within the school community, ensuring transparency and accountability in resource allocation.

Additionally, it aligns with the objectives outlined in DepEd SOCCSKSARGEN’S Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP), with a specific focus on enhancing public-private partnerships.

Despite the multiple predicaments, the team prevailed and claimed their victory along with their research coach Ninche Penuela, ready to present themselves for the Regional Research and Technology Science Fair.

Irineo seals 5th spot in GenSan SHS Statistics

In commemoration of the 34th National Statistics Month Celebration, Alfred I. Buca, together with his coach, Maiden Laine Andrade, managed to achieve 5th place in the General Santos City SHS Statistics Quiz, hosted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), at Icon Venue and Suites, October 14, 2023

This notable

accomplishment of securing second place underscores the school’s commitment to enhancing the educational journey of its students. Furthermore, it demonstrates the school’s earnest efforts to address the needs of both the institution and its students.

Miss Maiden Lane Andrade, the SNDS coordinator, conveyed her sincere gratitude, thankful for the assistance and support provided by the school’s admin and staff.

“Blessed kasi sa mga school needs na dapat ma-encode sa system at ma-provide na MOVs ng mga na-receive natin. With the help of our school principal, program coordinators, earlier SNDs coordinators, at lahat ng naging part para ma-encode at ma-submit ang needed documents, nanalo ang school natin,” she expressed.

Out of 18 schools that participated in the quiz, Buca, representing Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas, surpassed 13 student representatives and secured 5th place.

“With the help of my coach Ma’am Maiden Andrade, we used multiple examples from a combination of already made lessons relating to Statistics, as well as her own expertise regarding the subject to make it not only simple to learn, but also fun and engaging to me as a student,” Buca expressed.

Coach Andrade answers a question regarding their time spent reviewing and their challenges with it. According to her, time was their only struggle.

“Actually, naga meet lang kami ni Buca every recess time, lunch time, at tsaka pag bakante siya at bakante ako. So, yon lang talaga ang time namin na naga meet kami. Siguro ang time lang. Time na maka review pa mi,” she emphasized in Filipino.

POINT OF REALIZATION

PISA announced their results for 2022 on December 5, 2023.

Out of all 81 countries that participated, and with a total of 7,193 Filipino students assessed, the Philippines ranked 77th. And that result is unsurprising and not so encouraging.

While there were modest increases in reading scores (from 340 to 374) and math scores (from 353 to 355) compared to the PISA 2018 results, science scores saw a slight decline from 357 to 356.

Looking at the results, is it even reasonable to assert, does the Philippines truly demonstrated improvement?

This ranking is not something we should be proud of, nor should we settle for it. Our country can improve its education system, our people can be as educated as the others. What measures must be taken to make this improvement?

VP Sara Duterte, the Secretary of Education, plays a crucial role in directing the course of the education sector. While her background may not directly align with education, her position allows for collaboration with DepEd officials who possess expertise in curriculum development and educational pedagogy. By

closely collaborating with these officials, the DepEd Secretary can guarantee an ongoing process of curriculum evaluation and improvement that is customized to meet the dynamic needs of the students.

Second, it is a must that the teachers are provided with “right support” instead of getting bogged down with non-teaching duties. It is time that we let the teachers focus on their task, which is to ensure the students’ learning. There are teachers who neglect their students due to obligations that are not supposed to be their duties, which is why there are times that students fail to comprehend the lesson and do not learn anything at the end of the day.

Also, one of the reasons why students do not learn or remember anything from their class is because of the teachers themselves. Not only are they so overworked that students cannot gain or learn anything from them, but there are instances that teachers edifying the subjects that they are not supposed to teach.

But yet again, improvement cannot happen unless the country and its people are participative enough. We need to join forces and overcome this crisis, as it will be a valuable asset for national competitiveness, economic progress, and human develop-

LIKE KNIVES: Youth in Society

The Philippines, like most countries, had had to deal with juvenile criminals who cross the boundaries of law in committing crimes while in their youth— a time in their life that they should have spent indulging in their adolescence, making new friends, exploring love interests, and discovering their identities, but instead they stride down the path towards crime and delinquency and clash with the law.

The thousand-fold pages of recorded juvenile offenders in the country tell one common story: the ultimate fall-out of failed parenting or its total absence in the lives of these young delinquents with their crime-inclined activities as its by-products, starting a crack in their lives that if they continue to be unguided will only widen and allow more damages to penetrate them.

On the periphery of this issue lingers the importance of parental guidance and how it steers the wheel over which direction will the lives of these youths move towards because if it appears to be absent throughout their upbringings, they may end up being pulled over to shrugging off their education which could narrow their chances at being professionals, having mental health issues, having an insatiable sex-drive, disregarding their future, adapting abusive and aggressive behaviors, being addicted to substance abuse, or becoming an agent of mayhem and a regular player in street riots— all of these would make a far worse prison for them than in jails because its effects on their lives are long-term, if not eternal until injected with doses of transformative rehabilitation. All these buzzes about what will become of them if they lack parental assistance in growing up must not overpower the resounding alarms for effective parental guidance.

Getting into school is a major piece in the puzzle of children’s holistic upbringing and it is the responsibility of their parents to make sure that they do not wander off the path from their education and to ensure that children commit themselves into doing their best at school, have lesser problems with their behaviors, and maintain a strong mental health as research by Paul Amato and Frieda Fowler showed that a good parenting help children do so as afforested. Therefore, parents must be actively involved in their children’s education as it is an important key for children to have a steady path ahead towards having greater chances in employment and having a stable career in the future.

Effective and good parenting is an imperative measure to impose on the prevailing issue of children in conflict with the law because if disciplined, nurtured and cared for at home, and most especially, guided, children will be set to track the trail of good citizenship and be a contributor in the society instead of being in clash with the law and playing havoc with the efforts to curb the rate of juvenile crimes in the Philippines.

Like knives would be useful tools in the kitchen and an instrument of murder, children could likewise be a significant and key player in the development of the country and the maintenance of peace and order, and they could also be a destructive force and a battalion of troublemakers in society which necessitates the presence of a good and effective parenting so that they could be guided to the right path.

PRO-POSER: An ill-fated idea

Separation isn’t a resolution; it poses a challenge when it’s accepted.

Occasionally, Former President Rodrigo Roa proposes an imprudent notion that has the potential to disrupt both the nation and the unity among its people. He has explicitly expressed his intention to separate Mindanao from the Philippines.

The call to separate Mindanao is an uncertain thing one could propose or agree to. If it ever happens, it is doomed to fail and is a possible cause for the country’s downfall.

Duterte has publicly declared his “desire” to separate Mindanao from the Philippines due to his “frustrations” about the

uneven treatment and negligence of the central government towards Mindanao. Evidently, there exists a profound bias that manifests during times of crisis and governance.

However, addressing the genuine neglect does not cause secession. Just because Mindanao doesn’t get enough attention from the government, doesn’t mean that it needs to be separated from the Philippines. This proposed separation is not a solution; it is a problem if it is agreed to.

There is nothing noteworthy about the separation. There is no study that explains what Mindanao will become when it truly separates.

Refitting the unfavorable system

For the purpose of keeping up with the world’s standards, the Department of Education (DepEd) set forth a program called Catch-Up Fridays in the first month of 2024. Without a doubt, this is a fundamental action for phasing out an undesirable education.

True to its acronym “Drop Everything and Read (DEAR)'', a program that will help the future generations should be implemented without second thought -- a bridge for the learning gap. In fact, I believe this is the most productive and capable program that the government has proposed. Finally, a solution to a prolonged issue.

On January 12, the Department of Education finally released an intellect-saving proposal that tends to remedy the last PISA result, in which we were ranked below the standard average. Upon having this program, the students will be given a chance to improve their reading and comprehension competency, which is an essential skill for socializing with other nations. Can this program be the solution to the educational problem in the Philippines? Can we finally conclude that we are above the world standard?

Given that he has nothing to back it up, how can such a notion be deemed rational or viable?

Who will become the new power? In the absence of a central government, a power vacuum will arise.

People who live in Mindanao, especially those who are thirsty and greedy for power and authority, might usurp political power through might and force.

Moreover, the question of maintaining law and order post-secession looms large, particularly given the religious and ideological diversity within Mindanao.

Ultimately, international recognition

METRIAN

An enhancement of gifts to the learners. This program aims to strengthen the basic education priorities in the MATATAG Agenda and accelerate the achievement of education targets outlined in the National Learning Recovery Program (NLRP). A solution from the government, which is necessary for all learners and educators. With this, we can ensure the progress of our nation. Establishing better comprehension is a tool for higher learning for the students, as comprehension is the primary skill needed to solve a given situation. Our young ones are the hope of our nation; it’s only natural that the government should put all their efforts into providing them with their essentials, as they have been ignoring it for decades.

Moreover, the objectives of this program are for society itself and the modernization of the future. Indisputably, this program will provide a better system for students to match with the world’s standards, given that this is the obligation of our administration: to catch up not just the system of education but the entire nation

is a prerequisite for a state to attain independence. There will be a need to create new ties and relations with other countries, which will be difficult for Mindanao since there will be a greater demand for funds. There will be a problem regarding the funds that will be used during the process of separation and preserving a fresh start for Mindanao.

A suggestion ought to be well-thought out and backed up with research and logic. You can’t just propose or declare something so crucial just because you can; start limiting the words that come out of your mouth.

PULSE

Shifting Seasons: Hot or Cold

It has already been two years since the face-to-face classes were decided to start anew, changing the academic calendar. Lately, the Department of Education (DepEd) has commenced consultations on reverting the old academic calendar from June to March. A favorable shift for the nation, whereas it is a struggle for the teachers and students due to climate change.

Due to the lockdown and remote learning mode in schools brought by the Covid-19 pandemic back in 2020, the school year for public schools opened in October and faceto-face classes opened in August 2022. Some students see an opportunity for this shift to revert back to the old school calendar that shows the progress in the fading of Covid-19.

“In my opinion about the School calendar shift for me is good because the old school calendar has returned and the covid 19 has also disappeared.

Ronald Tuya Jr. (7-SPJ)

“ The shift is crucial and a must-do, especially with the Philippines’ unique climate, which could potentially endanger not just the learners but also the teachers’ health. I prefer the old school calendar to avoid the hot weather.

Yolizar Cabrido, (8-Durian)

“ As a student, I think it will be difficult for us because there will be another adjustment for our schedules but at the same time it can also help us to prepare for the next school year.

Irene Cose, (9-SPJ)

“ For me it's okay because it also can help us to finish our study's early altho it's sad because it's so early to finish but it is needed because it's our real calender shift on our studies.

Shawn Lawrence Talon, (8-Mangga)

While the change is currently planned by the DepEd to continue, the votes for the school calendar shift have largely been positive. Students, teachers, and parents recognize its benefits not only for the Philippine educational system but also for the concerns of each Filipino student's and teacher's health due to climate change.

Aligning the school's academic calendar with our country's climate also holds promise for enhanced education and economic growth. By embracing this change, we can help students step on a path of more efficient learning, resilience, and growth, providing quality education for all.

HEARING UNHEEDED VOICES

In recent years, people have confronted the mental health issue that is often overlooked, which has been a hard challenge faced by its victims. It is truly pitiful for people to have themselves as their own enemy, struggling to fight against their own thoughts.

Mental health is not a joke, it is a serious matter that can affect a person's well-being and health that can cause depression and anxiety, resulting in low self-esteem that can even lead to self-harm or death. The worst part is that billions of people might be experiencing it right now worldwide, that may include our friends or even our own family. As a student, the youth often undergo depression, anxiety or mental health issues especially when they're experiencing puberty. Though mostly adults feel the taste of suffering from these mental health problems which are often caused by stress from work, responsibilities or pressure in facing big changes in life.

One of the most common mental health issues in the Philippines is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), where it affects the individual based on experiences like traumatic events such as natural disasters and armed conflicts that can have a significant impact on the mental well-being of Filipinos. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Special Initiative for Mental Health, Filipinos have a rate between 11.3% and 11.6% of mental disorders that has an annual increase of 2.0%, increasing from 7.0 to 12.5 million Filipinos diagnosed with a mental disorder between 1990 and 2019. The Department of Health (DOH) cited that our country’s suicide rate has been steadily increasing in recent years showing that today’s generation of young people and adults are particularly vulnerable. This is overly concerning for the Filipino’s health. The Philippines makes various efforts for mental health awareness where organizations and advocacy groups are working to raise awareness and promote well-being just as campaigns, events, and online platforms aim to educate the public, reduce stigma, and encourage help-seeking behavior. The enactment of the Philippine Mental Health Act in 2018 should have been a step forward towards a comprehensive mental health framework, but the budget was low accounting for only 5%. Though the country’s mental health care is promising, it will still be a “too good to be true” promise if the people in authority will still undermine its effects and overlook its causes.

Mental health is something that should not be ignored. It needs to be talked about seriously. We must help hand in hand in not just breaking the stigma but also in combating every aspect of this delusive comrade before it is too late.

IHER INNER SELF FEATURE

used to have a friend. She possessed that angelic face yet so fragile, as if she’d fallen from heaven but startling with wounds. She said that she felt like not being welcome at school and that she wanted me to be her friend. I’m not quite sure what she saw in me that she didn't see among others when I was actually projecting a lone self in the corner. How did she knew that I was waiting for someone for a long time to see me as a friend and as someone worth being with.

As we became friends, I always wondered why she never let me meet her parents. I just ignored the unsolicited invita tion because I have so much respect for her and her decisions. I am just thankful enough that I have her and she has me. We cure each other’s pain, and we fill each other’s happiness.

On most of our days, I made sure I was there for her, and she was there for me. However, as days passed by, and as weeks turned to months, I’ve come to notice her change. She con stantly talked with herself as if she was out of sanity. I witnessed her wit slowly leaving her, but she always said she’s fine. I was shocked and devastated, that even though we were friends for so long, I was not able to make her aware of her state and I was not able to come to her and make her real ize what she has become. For quite some time now she has been talking with someone I know that doesn’t exist.

That day, I did all I could to make her forget her imaginary friend, but I wasn’t able to. I felt my world shatter again, even so, I won’t give up.

And finally, after many attempts, she listened to me and eventually decided to seek expert help. Her health improves through time, and I felt refreshed and happy because she is slowly getting back to her usual self.

To my horror, I slowly began to understand the reason I can’t meet her parents or why I was always left in the corner before I met her or why she’s my only friend. It’s not because I’m weird, it’s because I was merely one of her imaginary friends.

I came to realize that she created me because she feels empty. She needed someone and that someone was me. I have come to understand that I just exist through her imagination, and I also need to accept that I should never exist because I am damaging her mental well-being. I cannot bear the thought of being the reason her sanity is drifting away from her. So, I should disappear from her life.

Remembering all the stupid things we did and believing I’ve done my part and making a real difference to the life of a lonely person, remembering how we used to laugh, smile, and cry made me smile and feel fulfilled. But I should also decide not to stay with her any longer.

I’m satisfied. I am extremely proud of her; she grew up to be a self-sufficient person so that she won’t be needing me anymore. As I vanish into thin air, leaving the trail of our memories and realizing I cannot do anything but accept my tragic fate.

I’ve served my purpose and now must vanish. But why do I feel as though I’ve discovered a new purpose for her? Not just to take care of her but to carry her? Not to become one of her imaginary friends, but to become HER?

I, joining her, we become one. Her inner self, yes, I am.

Pain to Power

Tired of thinking and feeling that you're always alone and no one is on your side. Haunted with family chaos creeping in my young mind. The life of having a little comfort but having a broken family just doesn't fix anything. The heart missing parents to tell you they both love you and that they care. Missing a complete family, missing the bond, missing memories.

Looking at other parents, standing and clapping their hands saying "we are proud of you, and we will always be here". Sadly, mine was all shouting without being heard. Crying in silence. Bruises everywhere. Every part of me, broken and shattered. I was left behind, like a leftover. Will you help me? Will someone take me? Please rescue me.

Welcome to my life's developing plot. A very tough one.

I hate my parents! I hate them. I hate myself. Besides that, people bully me for not having a father, that I can't afford to get a uniform for my studies, that we lack financial support. It felt like I was derprived of eveything.

I was jealous of others because they all seem to have what I am longing; a complete family. Their father was there. And I? I fail to have one. I hate him for leaving me and mom. How could he? Am I not worth it? Questions hauting me even in my sleep.

Added trauma stirred when people continue to judge my situation. A narrative they didn't know, failing to fathom what the real story was. When will my pain end?

And there, one sunny day, "Rescue Kabataan" visited. Extending their arms of warmth for kids like me -- lonely, abandoned, disturbed and in the verge of falling apart.

Bliss. It was true bliss that I have found solace and comfort through them and with them. The goal of RK was to give understanding and advice to students. To learn how to manage the swing of emotions and unfortunate moments in this cruel world, teaching us to move on, to forget all the pain we received.

Then I realized, it's just us, me and mom. We are enough. We have to stand, fight life's battles, and take care of each other. Acceptance, it freed me.

And so, I have found in my heart to forgive my father. The pain was unbearable for a time, but we all deserve a chance. I am now breaking free from the hate and the pain I once succumbed to.

Because of RK, I truly learned great things. To be strong and independent, and most importantly, to forgive and let go of the trauma of my past.

In the halls of Irineo L. Santiago NHSMD, the echoes of laughter and friendship resonated. The journey serves as a reminder that even in despair, hope shines brightest. Through the support of programs like RK, and the resilience of the human spirit, the path towards healing and forgiveness were illuminated, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow.

RESCUE KABATAAN:

Afamous saying that has been going around the Philippines for decades as it was a statement of Filipinos' very own National hero, Jose Rizal. A saying that keeps the volunteers of Rescue Kabataan going and thriving in their humble journey of changing the lives of the youth.

Rescue Kabataan (RK) is a Non-Government Organization (NGO) that aims to empower and help the youth avoid the cruelty of the world—to help them realize that there is still time for change and redirection.

RK is a 10-month long program. They started growing this year 2024 as different branches from the islands of the Philippines help provide a safe and structured environment for the youth to learn and grow. They work to help, not wanting anything as a payback except for the youth to grow and prosper in a friendly and peaceful environment.

TO MOVE IS TO MOVE ON

“Before moving on, you have to clear away your cherished beliefs.”-Anonymous-

very room that we were in was loaded with the presence of joy. Everyone seemed jealous of the thing we had—it’s funny how we didn’t care about it. As long as we were holding each other’s hearts, nothing—no one could ever intervene. We were each other’s perfect missing piece. I long for what we had. I long for my wife.

I was snapped out of my little monologue by a pair of cold arms wrapped around my torso. “Why are you quiet? Is there something that’s bothering my handsome husband? ” She spoke using the soft melodic voice that made my heart flutter the first time that she was introduced to me by a friend. “It’s you, my love.” I said, loud enough for the wind to take it to her ears. I looked back to look at her; the confusion was evident on her face, which I found endearing. “I have to let you go now.” I spoke once again, using a voice that’s as gentle as a feather touching the ground. The look on her face shattered me to the core—a look of surprise that slowly turned blue, and blue turned gray as she slowly disappeared into thin air.

I knew I had to let her go. Her death was sudden and unexpected; I did not know how to process everything. Then I found myself in a world I created where she was still with me, soft and gentle in my arms. My mental state went so bad to the point that even my made-up wife believed she was real. It was hard to let go, but I had to face the reality that’s waving right at me—even if it means accepting that my other half is gone.

Days turned to months, months turned to years, and years turned into a decade. It has been a decade since I started to get a hold of myself, pulling it back from the world I created. A decade has passed, but my love for her remains firm. A decade has passed, and I still long for her warmth, which once served as a fuzzy, thick blanket embracing me in the middle of a rainy midnight.

I am alone, but free—free from the unhinged obsession of denying reality. For the past ten years, I have tried various ways to keep my sanity in the right place. I traveled to places that my wife and I wanted to go but didn’t get the chance to. I read self-help books and made friends along the way. There were times that I would just wrap myself up in bed and listen to the songs that we used to listen to. I adopted a dog in order to have someone accompany me as I remember every bit of memory with my love—especially because I knew how much she wanted to get one. Doing things that reminded me of her hurt, yet it was also the best way to move forward.

When we say move on, some might interpret it as forgetting their late loved ones. Moving on doesn’t have to make you forget your person; moving on is forgetting the bad habits you developed from their death—that is, by doing things that remind you of them as a way of healing your wound, because to MOVE is to MOVE ON.

Truly life-changing Fortunate Misfortune

My once adored figure, whose laughter used to warm our house has turned into a distant stranger who has betrayed us. I felt the weight of my father's dishonesty pulling me down like a heavy anchor as I was caught in the chaos of my parents' failing marriage. Every lie that came to light made my innocence vanish piece by piece.

As years passed, I spent time recovering from things that should’ve protected me. Despite feeling these, I never envied girls who have their father with them because I have my mom who stood up as my father and I was glad I have her. But these feelings suddenly shattered when my mom found another man, she saw her future with. I expected myself to be happy because I will be having a father, I always longed for but why do I feel anger? Why do I have this resentment?

I eventually realized that this man meant no harm. He is a kind-hearted man who stepped into my life with promises of love and protection. Slowly, I began to lower the walls I built around my heart, placing my trust in him as he filled the role of a father figure I craved. With each passing day, I dared to believe that, just maybe, I had found someone I could rely on other than my mom.

the heart of the City of General Santos is the first school in Mindanao that they’ve chosen to start conducting their program. They are currently prioritizing the 8th Grade learners for a reason that they are the ones at the age where curiosity hits the heart of a teenager.

The impact that they have put in the minds and hearts of the young learners is indeed proof that it is never too late and impossible to teach the youth about the why’s and the how’s of life for everyone. Each teen has their own story to share and to learn from.

By conducting activities such as sharing life experiences and the Word of God, they have helped the young to realize that there is still time for each of them to overcome the obstacles and addictions that they are currently facing. They have given them the chance to feel the warmth of having older siblings that truly care for them.

As fate would have it, history repeated itself in the cruelest of ways. I opened my heart to him, but he made me realized that he is like the man that made me close my heart in the first place. I discovered with a heavy heart that the scars of my past would forever haunt me, a constant reminder of the betrayal that had shaped my life.

Yet, I wondered why my mom still forgave him then I realized that it was because of my younger sibling, the family they made, forgetting I was the other. I was again neglected and shattered.

Out from the comfort of the family I thought I am being shielded; I am being reassured by people I only have known from a very short period. They taught me to break the wall I once built. These “Ate’s” and “Kuya’s” from Rescue Kabataan are heaven sent helping me to rise from this burden long before I am being succumb.

They told me touching stories of people who were able to escape from their darkest memories to happy memoirs. They share gospels and words of God that never seem to fail touching my heart. That is when I realized that I was not alone.

I gather up all courage I could get and opened to them. I also told them my stories just like how they told theirs. Tear and another tear fell into my face as I let out all my feelings, I was trembling and overwhelmed. Their listening heart and caring hands is helping me to rebuild myself from the dungeon of darkness I am long before in.

Despite hardships, I realized there's still grace and goodness in my life, even in the most unexpected ways, even in disguise of a fortunate misfortune.

A Chest of Memories

friends laughing.

Fresh air, wide space, beautiful trees…

One small park holds many memories of how the fresh breeze calms your mind after a long quiz. How the wide space provides a hang out area for you and your friends. How the beautiful greenery of trees gives you peace of mind. It seems there's an invisible string that ties you to this small wonderland–a wonderland in the heart of a stressful environment and noisy classrooms, a place that resembles every moment you had. Indeed, it’s a chest, a chest of memoirs this inner child in me collects in my core memories.

Every morning, when the sun shines its glorious golden rays, the laughter of the students fills the air, echoing the joy of youthful innocence and boundless imagination. Enjoying the fresh morning breeze, running around the grass, listening while the trees dance along the wind, and watching the birds fly across the golden sky, those moments are to be kept not only in your heart but also at the very place of the core memory in your mind.

After classes when you take a break, you sit on the ground and eat your food while talking about everything or studying under the trees, giving you a shade of comfort and providing tranquility to the weary soul. This place offers such relief when you just sit on the ground after a long quiz and student life bust and hassle and relax your mind as the birds start tweeting and the wind starts blowing.

And after a long day, you run and catch each other like children in a playground. Then you play with your friends and laugh with each other and you run around and around with your peers or throwing balls and jumping high. When making memories that each and one of you can hold till the end of times. Oh, it’s a space where bonds are forged, memories are made, and the ties of friendship are strengthened with each passing season.

And as time passes by, you move on, you make new memories in unfamiliar places, you may bury those memories you had in the past, but everything is kept in that single place, a chest of memory that will never be buried by time. With just one glance everything hits back like déjà vu, you remember every moment from when you eat chocolate ice cream, practice dancing or reciting, hear the birds tweeting, and watch your

This place holds everything, from your proudest moments to the most embarrassing ones. It’s a place full of unexpected happenings where you might meet your biggest enemy or best friend. As the sun sets behind the horizon, casting a warm glow over the park, one can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this small slice of paradise nestled within the bustling cityscape and student life.

One Metrian Park like its name suggests– oneness in every thing and in anything. May it be small in size but its impact on the lives of those who made its memo ries here is big and immeasurable, reminding us all that sometimes, the most precious treasures are found in its simplicity where from generation to generation holds memories that are kept yesterday, today and beyond.

Responsibility begins with us.

If we do not act, this alarming waste consumption, landfills, or burning, including poor waste management, may lead to a tragic ending. To suppress this alarming ignorance, Youth for Environmental in School Organizations (YES-O) conceived as they implement Zero Waste, or” Pwera! Basura" a way to combat the raising waste issues.

Zero waste, or “Pwera! Basura!” is a sustainable method that diverts a small amount of waste and maximizes recycling and composition activities. Yes-O aim to encourage Metrians to be environmentally conscious and responsible.

“Actually, the school is not yet zero-waste; na le-lessen pa lang natin ang production of waste by conducting such projects and activities,” the YES-O president said.

Dedication of YES-O motivates Metrians to be eco-conscious and deliberately practice their environmental responsibilities. Also, by reminding students to pick up garbage and teaching them the proper use of 3RS, we will fully achieve the zero-waste goal.

To permanently achieve zero waste at the school, YES-O promotes sustainable habits that pursue reducing waste production and raising awareness of recycling and composting activities. Zero waste teaches Metrians to have a sense of environmental awareness in the community, develops responsible consumption, and teaches the learners the value of resource conservation. Besides, Metrians proved that we can reduce and eventually end garbage from our schools.

From high atop the mountain to streams that trickle downhill, there comes an endless flow. Birds sang sweetly from the trees; butterflies swirled around as frogs croaked, hopping each and every stone. On cold nights, crickets would chirp loudly enough to wake the river to flow along the strong breeze fish have enjoyed dancing with, where fireflies would glow so brightly as the moon that the river could shine beautifully.

How deeply I am in woe, when I know its serenity is about to be snatched on her. A drifting haste of murky and gray of the world will soon chaste its abundance and care. In silence, I am in prayer with high hopes that not everything is too late. For in its purity, the world will come into realization that rivers are sources of life. Metrian YES-O launches Pwera Basura

IMANGROVE REVOLUTION: Leaning towards marine conservation

n a bid to tackle the alarming issue of plastic waste at Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas, the Youth for Environment in School Organization (YES-O) initiated the "Pwera Basura" project on January 9.

Led by Meai Mendoza, the organization’s very own adviser, the project aims to foster waste reduction awareness among students, encouraging them to take ownership of their waste. Pwera Basura seeks not to eliminate waste entirely but to reduce it significantly.

For a greener Metrian

In an interview, Mendoza emphasized that the essence of Pwera Basura's vision emerged as a strategy to minimize school waste without the expectation of entirely eliminating it. Mendoza clarified that while the project aims to reduce waste, it acknowledges that not all waste is perishable and therefore cannot be entirely eradicated.

"Pwera Basura, it is all about reducing our school waste, meaning it is not zero waste, mag reduce lang tayo," Mendoza said.

Mendoza further emphasized that the prevalence of balloons, plastics, and paper on the school campus poses significant challenges, leading to high payments for waste disposal to the barangay. These items are among the most abundant sources of waste, contributing to the financial burden faced by the school.

"So yung pinagbawal natin ang balloons, plastic straws, and plastic spoons, kasi yun ang napakaraming basura dito sa campus natin, so yun ang mga nakita namin in previous year, na mahal kaayo Ang bayaran sa barangay," she uttered.

Republic Act 9003

According to Mendoza, the primary objective behind the implementation of Pwera Basura is to uphold and promote the principles outlined in Republic Act 9003. This legislation is dedicated to establishing essential policies aimed at fostering eco-friendliness and sustainable waste management practices.

"The Pwera Basura is also related to Republic Act 9003, which is all about zero waste management," she stated. Additionally, Republic Act 9003, commonly referred to as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, lays out crucial policies to facilitate a 25% reduction in waste management. This legislation achieves this goal by promoting the adoption of eco-friendly practices encapsulated in the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Discipline and practice

From Mendoza's perspective, the primary challenge associated with Pwera Basura lies in the discipline of the students, who often fail to adhere to the straightforward rules outlined by the project.

"Ang disadvantage is mahirap idisiplinina ang mga bata, kahit nasa harap na ang basurahan, hindi parin i-shoot," Mendoza concluded.

From her standpoint, even the basic practice of waste segregation is not consistently followed by students.

"Even though there are labels on the trashcans, they still don't apply the proper segregation," Mendoza said in Filipino.

Pwera Basura as perceived by the students

From the perspective of a student, the launched project is not viewed negatively because it can contribute to the cleanliness of the campus and encourage students to take responsibility for their own waste.

"I say Pwera Basura is good, as it can sustain the cleanliness of the campus and can make students more organized in the segregation of garbage," the student said.

Furthermore, she believes that this project has the potential to position the school as a role model for others to emulate.

Implementation of the project

As Mendoza mentioned, the implementation of the project commences at the school gate, where guards prohibit the entry of plastic onto the campus premises.

"From the gate, mismo yung guard is alam na yung policy para hindi na talaga makakapasok yung mga plastics," Mendoza said.

She also emphasized that school staff are prohibited from bringing plastic or paper onto the campus premises, and if such items are observed being used, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

A tree to save marine biodiversity.

Recent reports highlight a concerning trend of rapid mangrove deforestation, posing significant threats to these vital ecosystems. In response, the Youth for Environment School’s Organization (YES-O) of Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas has taken proactive measures, conducting outreach programs in Bula Zone 6 every third Saturday of the month to address this pressing issue and promote environmental awareness.

In an activity designed by Meai G. Mendoza, the adviser of the organization, it was revealed that the Philippines ranks among the largest producers of plastic waste globally. Shockingly, the country generates approximately 2,565,766 tons of plastic waste, posing a grave risk of pollution to waterways, oceans, and coastal regions.

Mangrove Revolution and its history

In an interview with the current YES-O President Julliana Agraviador, she revealed that the initiative has been ongoing since 2016. Recognizing that it aligns with the five mandated activities of the organization, they have identified the mangrove forest as an area with significant potential for environmental impact and community involvement.

“Nakitaan ng potential yung mangrove forest dun sa Bula, so nakacover na siya ng at least five mandated projects of YES-O sa isang activity,” Agraviador said.

Addressing environmental awareness

Tons of plastic waste have accumulated around the Mangrove Forest, causing water pollution that continues to escalate rapidly.

As addressed by Agraviador, garbage is strewn throughout the forest, with only a handful of volunteers actively addressing the issue. The lack of recognition of this problem by the wider community has resulted in limited efforts to address the issue effectively.

“Yung mga coastal areas madami ng basura that time, then gamay lang kaayo ang nagavolunteer ug initiate sa activity nga coastal clean-up,” she said.

Solution to the pollution

To address the issue, the school’s YES-O, in collaboration with the Local Government Units, and Non-Governmental Organizations unite to organize the Mangrove Revolution in Bula.

Their approach involves conducting various activities including clean-up drives, mangrove planting, propagule harvesting, orientations, and other relevant initiatives to mitigate the impact of plastic pollution and promote the restoration of the mangrove ecosystem.

“Every 3rd Saturday, nagaconduct tayo ng clean-up drive sa coastal area, mangrove planting, nagaharvest tayo para may maitanim tayo the next activities,” Agraviador emphasized.

The Mangrove Revolution stands as one of YES-O's key strategies in combating global pollution. Through this initiative, each activity translates into the planting of numerous mangroves within the forest, contributing significantly to environmental restoration and biodiversity conservation efforts.

STEM Metrians make waves in ocean safeguarding efforts

Saving marine lives, a reef at a time.

Currently, the planet’s marine environment is grappling with a multitude of disasters, including organic waste, pollution, climate change, and synthetic destructions such as overfishing and dynamite fishing. In response to these, former grade 12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students of Irineo L. Santiago National High School of Metro Dadiangas conducted a study aimed at mitigating the damage. Their initiative involves the creation of an Artificial Coral Reef using Cement-Rice Husk Ash Hollow Blocks.

In an exclusive interview with Mr. Cirilo Lagnason, the superintendent of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS), he expressed full support for the students' research initiative.

Lagnason emphasized that the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) are backing the project. This support stems from the project's innovative use of organic waste, which addresses the loss of coral reefs and provides essential habitat for fish populations.

Behind the study

According to Lagnason, this project carries significant environmental benefits. By utilizing rice husk in the construction of artificial coral reefs, it discourages farmers from burning this agricultural waste, thereby mitigating pollution. Additionally, the project contributes positively to the marine environment by providing habitat for marine life and aiding in the restoration of coral reefs.

"Aside from the fact na problema din natin ang mga magsasaka na nagsusunog ng dayami o dahon ng palay, we really need an innovation for our coral reefs," he said.

Lagnason further emphasized that these artificial reefs serve as temporary shelters for fish populations. Given that it takes approximately three years for natural coral reefs to develop, these artificial structures offer vital refuge and support for marine life in the interim period. "We need an artificial reef for temporary shelter for our fish, as coral reefs take 3 years to grow,” Lagnason added.

The making of the hollow blocks

As highlighted by Marlo Alkuino, the group leader, the project exemplifies a commendable integration of organic waste material into practical applications, demonstrating a clear focus on environmental conservation. Their initiative revolves around utilizing organic waste to address environmental concerns, reflecting a proactive approach to sustainability and ecosystem preservation.

Stomach Acid: A Revelation that Dissolves Danger

Did you know that the human stomach can dissolve dangerous razor blades?

Beyond its usual role in breaking down the food that people consume, the human stomach holds a mind-blowing function; it could dissolve razor blades.

Along with the surprising power of the body, the stomach’s acidity is one of its greatest attributes. According to the Africa Check Organization, acids are corrosive liquids that break down the chemical structure of living tissue, organic compounds and metals. They can be measured on the potential of hydrogen or the pH scale, which ranges from 0 to 14.

Stomach acid, also known as gastric acid and gastric juice, is produced by the lining of the stomach, and it has a low pH of 1.5 to 3.5, meaning it is highly acidic and can break down food that people eat, allowing their bodies to digest nutrients. Its acid is hydrochloric acid, described by a chemical safety site as a strong corrosive that can be used industrially to process steel.

The human stomach acid is typically 1.0 to 2.0, which means that it has an incredibly strong pH that can be used as a potential razor blade dissolver, which is supported by several science sites.

In a study published in the Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, scientists found that the thickened back of a single-edge blade dissolver, after 2 hours of immersion in stomach acid. Remarkably, at 15 hours, the once sturdy double-edged razor blades became brittle enough to be broken with a snare. After a full day of 24 hours, these blades were found to weigh a mere 63% of their original weight, a testament to the relentless acidic attack within the stomach.

Finally, stomach acid's incredible power is demonstrated by the human stomach's capacity to dissolve potentially dangerous things like razor blades.

The findings revealed that razor blades submerged in stomach acid started to corrode within hours, and by the fifteenth hour, double-edged blades had become so brittle as to shatter. These blades lost a substantial amount of their initial weight after a whole day, demonstrating the stomach's constant acidic assault.

This discovery highlights the astounding complexity of the human body, where even seemingly ordinary biological functions like digestion reveal incredible potential. The acidity of the stomach acts as a powerful barrier, neutralizing possible threats and enabling systems to safely absorb the food that people eat.

rine ecosystems and biodiversity.

"The DENR office approved the conduct of the study and permitted the team to submerge the artificial coral reef composed of hollow blocks made of cement and rice husk ash into the seabed of Sarangani," he said.

Furthermore, the conducted research proved to be successful, evidenced by the discovery of a sea urchin inhabiting one of the hollow blocks, indicating the efficacy of the artificial coral reefs in providing habitat and attracting marine life, and affirming the project's potential for enhancing marine biodiversity and ecosystem health.

To the people and environment by the youth

"Materials used in the making of the artificial coral reefs, which are hollow blocks composed of water, sand, cement, and rice husk ash (RHA) as a partial replacement for the cement," he stated.

Lagnason emphasized the importance of using en vironmentally friendly materials to effectively reduce organic waste. This approach aligns with the broader goal of promoting sustainability and minimizing the environmental impact of human activities.

"Yes, the rice husk and ‘yung dahon ng palay are organic waste; the cement is non-toxic, and the sand is also non-toxic," concluded the superintendent.

DENR assistance

Alkuino confirmed that DENR has given its approval for the research project to proceed with the submersion of artificial coral reefs. This endorsement signifies official recognition and support for the initiative's efforts to enhance ma-

According to Lagnason, this development is advantageous for both environmental and human welfare. From an environmental perspective, the artificial reefs provide shelter for fish, facilitating their reproduction and contributing to biodiversity conservation. Additionally, the presence of these reefs enhances food security by supporting sustainable fisheries and ensuring the availability of marine resources for local communities.

"Coral reefs are the habitat of our fishes and if we have these fishes, the tendency is that we'll have an ambush supply of fish, and in that sense, we have food security," he stated.

He also quoted Jose Rizal’s "Kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan" (Youth are the hope of the nation) which underscores the significant role that young people play in shaping the future. This serves as a compelling reason for the youth to actively engage in initiatives like environmental conservation and prove their inherent value and contribution to society.

"The youth and the students have a big stake to the environment, and if tayo ang pag-asa ng bayan, we should also do the innovation; we should also do something para sa environment," he mentioned.

Lagnason further emphasized that harnessing the power of this generation and leveraging the technologies of this era is imperative, and the responsibility to utilize the resources and opportunities available to enact positive change and pave the way for a sustainable future.

"We should capitalize sa mga kabataan the innovative the technology pagiging techy natin, gamitin natin, we have edge to solve issue because we don't want the next generation to blame us," he added.

Moreover, Alkuino emphasizes how the success of the project can inspire others to make a difference and contribute to saving the rich biodiversity that exists beneath the ocean waves and motivate communities to act in preserving marine ecosystems and promoting environmental sustainability.

"I can influence people to support our project by showing our fruitful results in our research as evidence as to why it is beneficial in employing it to our seas," he said.

PARALYMPICS

A Race for Gold, a Run for Acceptance

Within the sporting world, the Paralympics serve as a monument to the tenacity, willpower, and sheer athleticism of peopl who have surmounted physical obstacles. The Paralympic Games, which began as a modest reunion of British World War II veterans in 1948, have expanded into an international celebration of human potential that highlights the remarkable accomplishments of athletes with impairments. In contrast to the more well-known Olympics, the Paralympics give athletes with a variety of disabilities an opportunity to compete in several sporting disciplines, from wheelchair basketball to parasailing, inspiring millions of people worldwide.

The Paralympics have developed into a global representation of diversity and inclusivity. Athletes with impairments train relentlessly across the world, challenging preconceptions and pushing the bounds of what is thought to be possible. The fact that nations like China, the United States, and Great Britain have been dominating the Paralympic medal tables for a long time shows how competitive and worldwide the games are. With each race, match, or competition they take part

in, these athletes challenge social conventions and stereotypes about disability, acting as ambassadors of bravery and tenacity.

For those with impairments in the Philippines, the Paralympics are a source of empowerment and hope. The para-athletes from the Philippines persevere in overcoming many obstacles, such as inadequate facilities and resources, and exhibit their abilities on both national and international platforms. Para-athletes are supported and nurtured by organizations such as the Philippine Paralympic Committee (PPC), which also advocates for wider inclusion of para-athletes in society and gives them opportunity to flourish in their chosen sports.

without disabilities learn to collaborate, support one another, and value each person's unique talents and abilities by implementing Paralympic values into the classroom. Exposure to the Paralympics can also encourage pupils to embrace diversity and appreciate differences by dispelling myths and preconceptions regarding disabilities. Schools are vital in fostering the next wave of inclusive leaders and advocates, thanks to programs like school Paralympic days, adaptive sports, and educational materials created by groups like the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

but also served as a testament to the extraordinary abilities, resilience and excellence of its Special Education (SPED) learners.

Within the field of education, the Paralympics are a priceless tool for encouraging inclusivity, diversity, and empathy in learners. With the help of para-athletes' inspiring experiences, numerous educational institutions worldwide have included paralympic-themed curricula and activities into their curricula, imparting important lessons about tenacity, flexibility, and overcoming hardship. Teachers may create a more inclusive learning environment where students with and

In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Irineo L. Santiago National High School from Metro Dadiangas secured a series of stunning victories across multiple sports disciplines. Among its notable achievements, the school clinched gold medal in atheletics 400M bagged by Angel Talumo, silver medal bagged by Prince Fredo Reyes, Leonard Van Gorree in Athletics 100M, and another silver medal in Bocce Singles bagged by Peejay Gravillo. Meanwhile, Lucilyn Colanse hailed 4th place in Athletics 400M.

These outstanding performances not only brought glory to the school

As much as they are about athletics, it's important to understand that the Paralympics are a race for acceptance as much as they are about athletics. In a society or community where people with disabilities frequently face prejudice and discrimination, the Paralympics provide a potent platform for advocacy and awareness. The games challenge society views about disability by exposing the exceptional abilities of para-athletes and promoting an inclusive, respectful, and egalitarian message. Every medal, record, and obstacle that para-athletes break and conquer makes society a more welcoming and inclusive place.

More than just an exhibition of physical skill, the Paralympics are a celebration of inclusiveness, resiliency, and willpower. It serves as a potent reminder of what can be accomplished when people are given the chance to pursue their aspirations, regardless of the challenges they confront, as the world continues to unite behind the people who strive hard to be accepted.

Physical activities provide numerous benefits to the students beyond physical fitness. Participating in sports not only enhances physical well-being, but it also teaches vital life skills and encourages holistic development, including value formation.

For starters, physical sports teach discipline and time management skills, both of which are necessary for value creation. Student-athletes learn to blend academic obligations with tough training programs and contests. This equilibrium promotes a strong work ethic and teaches students the value of priority and organization. Furthermore, the sense of accomplishment that comes from learning new abilities and overcoming barriers promotes self-esteem and confidence, allowing the students to face problems with perseverance and drive.

In addition to the physical and psychological benefits, athletic activity promotes academic performance, which is another important aspect of human development. Research has consistently proven a link

between regular physical activity and better cognitive function. Exercise improves brain function via increasing neuroplasticity, or the brain's ability to adapt and remodel neural networks. Students that participate in sports have higher concentration, memory retention, and problem-solving abilities, which leads to improved academic success. Furthermore, sports provide discipline and time management abilities, which convert into better study habits and academic rigor.

BEYOND THE FIELD

“The game was incredibly intense. At first, I was nervous given the size of our opponents, but our teamwork and play-by-heart are what brought us to victory," he remarked.

Embracing e-sports as the next frontier

In the ever-changing landscape of athletics, I am caught between tradition and innovation. As a die-hard sports fan, I've seen firsthand the exhilarating highs and crushing lows of physical competition. However, as the globe moves farther into the digital age, a new rival has developed, challenging my preconceived beliefs about what constitutes sport: e-Sports.

There is no disputing eSports' magnetic attraction, particularly among younger generations like myself. With the rapid growth of technology, video games have evolved from basic recreational activities to respectable forms of competitive sport. The passion, skill, and collaboration required to excel in eSports are similar to traditional sports, promoting a sense of camaraderie and achievement among players like me.

Recently, I have been captivated by the incorporation of eSports into regular sporting events, such as Mobile Legends Bang Bang (MLBB), League of Legends: Wild Rift, and Call of Duty Mobile at Palarong Pambansa 2023 in Marikina City. This ambitious approach represents a seismic shift in the sporting world, combining physical and digital athleticism to produce a dynamic and immersive spectator experience.

However, amidst the euphoria, there are voices of disapproval. Critics contend that eSports lack the ruggedness and physicality of traditional sports, casting doubt on their inclusion in major contests. However, as someone who has witnessed the high mental acuity, lightning-fast reflexes, and strategic prowess required for professional gaming, I cannot disagree. Chess is acclaimed as a sport because of its emphasis on strategy and intellect, and eSports players deserve to be recognized for their skill and dedication.

I believe that incorporating eSports into traditional sporting events is an exciting development in the realm of athletics. By embracing diversity in sports, we not only extend the audience base but also challenge what it means to compete. As I navigate this brave new world of sports, I choose to embrace the merger of virtual and physical realms, honoring the rich tapestry of competition in all its manifestations.
