From the President THE MISSISSIPPI BANKER
Pass the perspective, please By Mac Deaver, MBA President I love the holidays. Christmas is a time of great joy and happiness spent with our families. It is a time to count blessings and give thanks. Perhaps most importantly, Christmas Deaver is a time to take stock of our lives and look to the future in faith, hope and commitment. It is very easy to view everything in life as either good or bad, wonderful or terrible -- and to let this outlook dictate how we live. All too often, this kind of thinking can determine how one approaches the holidays. Of course, the reality is that everyone experience highs and lows, and ups and downs. It is how we deal with them (and, yes, how we help others deal with them), that gives meaning to our lives. As 2016 comes to a close, we look back on a year that had triumphs and tragedies, victories and defeats, and joy and sadness. And it can be a struggle to put everything into perspective. We all need a big helping of perspective in trying to make sense of the 2016 election year. Throughout the year, much of our attention was on a national election that was dominated by political hostility like we've never seen before. The presidential campaign brought much bitterness and division to the surface, and the open hostilities continue many weeks after Election Day. And there is no end in sight. Purposefully, the presidential candidates focused on many issues where Americans were deeply divided -- like crime, immigration, health care, religion, gun rights, terrorism, and many more. And voters were asked over and over: "Are your with us or against us?" At different
2
times during the campaign, one candidate was described as "the most qualified person to ever run for president." Then another candidate was "totally unfit" to serve. (By applying honest perspective, we realized that neither of these statements were true.) The public faced an onslaught of accusations of personal misconduct, of computer hacking, and of foreign efforts to influence the election. And all of these flames were fanned by 24-hour news coverage (and commentary) and social media. I actually heard a TV commentator on Election Night say that the election had "created deep division in our nation." News flash: The division was already here. The election only brought it to the surface. Expressions of outrage and protest came quickly after the votes were counted. Some set about to devise a way to "overturn" the election. Unfortunately, some political leaders took the low road, encouraging the protests and promoting continued turmoil. It is my hope that during the holidays we can gain some important perspective on all of this. My prayer is that the spirit of Christmas will help bring better understanding so we can move forward together.
THE MISSISSIPPI BANKER
It is also important that we pray for our country, and for each other. At the MBA, we had a good 2016. As in all years, we dealt with a number of ups and downs and wins and losses. With the support and participation of hundreds of Mississippi bankers, and the dedicated leadership of Chairman Frank Sibley and our officers and board, we have a number of positive things in the works heading into 2017. I, along with the entire MBA staff, express appreciation to each of you for your support this past year. My wish is that the spirit of the season will go with all of you throughout the coming year. I am reminded of a somewhat obscure song recorded by Elvis Presley in 1966 - 50 years ago. The song was entitled "If Every Day Was Like Christmas" and its last lines were: Why can't every day be like Christmas; Why can't this feeling go on endlessly. For if every day could be just like Christmas, What a wonderful world this would be. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each of you -- every day!

Seven banks work together to build Habitat home Strong neighborhoods build strong communities. That is why for the second straight year seven local banks participated in the Bankers Build partnership with Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area (HFHMCA). Partnering in this unique collaboration to build a home for a local family were Trustmark, Wells Fargo, Regions, BancorpSouth, Origin Bank, Renasant Bank, and First Commercial Bank. Employees from the seven banking institutions worked together for 7-8 days in October and early November to construct a Habitat house at 2916 Greenview Drive, Jackson. This is the same street where the Bankers Build partnership built and dedicated a Habitat house in 2015. The 2015 and 2016 Bankers Builds forge a unique, collaborative team building experience for these banks that will last long after the houses have been completed. The partnership serves as a model for the entire community, showing what can be accomplished when we work together.
Bank leaders instrumental in developing this partnership are (from left) George Broadstreet, Community Outreach Vice President, Renasant Bank; Bo Bourne, Senior Vice President, First Commercial Bank; Mike Ryan, Mississippi District Manager, Wells Fargo Bank NA; Arthur DuCote, Mississippi President, Regions; Melanie Morgan, Senior Vice President, Director of Corporate Communications and Marketing, Trustmark; Joseph Moss, Mid MS Division President, BancorpSouth; and Larry Ratzlaff, MS State President, Origin Bank.

GSB at LSU: Developing bank leaders since 1950 School’s 68th annual session set May 21-June 2, 2017, in Baton Rouge Since Mississippi banker Orrin Swayze led the establishment of the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University in 1950, the school has become one of the most successful graduate banking schools in the country. In 65 years, the school – operated today as the Graduate School of Banking at LSU – has awarded diplomas to almost 16,000 bankers. There were 100 students in the school’s first session over six decades ago. Seventeen of these students were Mississippi bankers. Today, the school annually has an enrollment in excess of 450 bankers, hailing from throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries. Many leaders in Mississippi’s banking industry have graduated from GSB, which has become a cornerstone of banking education for Mississippi bankers. GSB alumni include current MBA Vice Chairman Frank Sibley. Approximately 10 percent of the school’s graduates – about 1,600 – have been Mississippi bankers. When it was founded in 1950, GSB had the sponsorship of the Mississippi Bankers Association and 8 other state bankers associations. As the school grew and prospered, a number of other state associations joined in support. Today, 15 state bankers associations from Texas to Virginia are co-sponsors of GSB. Dr. Don Woodland is the long-time
Director of GSB, and he works closely with the school's 33-member Board of Trustees to keep the curriculum current and meaningful, and to maintain the highest standards among the school faculty. In 2016, Max Yates, senior executive vice president of BankPlus, Ridgeland, served on the school’s Board of Trustees, and MBA president Mac Deaver served as chairman of the Board of Trustees. The GSB faculty is made up of senior bank officers, industry regulators, banking educators, and professionals. A number of faculty members are Mississippians, including past MBA chairmen George Schloegel and Carl Chaney, as well as Dr. Ken Cyree, holder of the MBA/Frank R. Day Chair of Banking. Mississippi bankers and the MBA have long been active in the leadership of the school. Six bankers from our state – beginning with Orrin Swayze – have served as GSB president. Swayze was an officer of Jackson's First National Bank (now Trustmark) when he was the school's first president in 1950. Other GSB presidents from Mississippi have included Bob Gaddis, George Schloegel, Harry Walker, Clifton Fowler and Tommy Darnell. The three-year program of study at GSB at LSU includes three two-week sessions on the LSU campus and the successful completion of home study problems
between sessions. Banker interaction and networking is a valuable part of the GSB experience, as students work together on case studies and projects, and compete as teams in a computerized bank simulation exercise during their third year. In all, graduates of the school complete well over 100 hours of classroom instruction over three years. While maintaining the most intensive program of any graduate banking school in the nation, GSB continues to offer the lowest tuition. This makes the school a tremendous value for educating the upand-coming bank leaders in Mississippi and the nation. Tuition for the 2017 session is $3,995. Applications are now being accepted for the school's 2017 session, to be held on the LSU campus May 21 through June 2. Application forms are available online or from the GSB office. Deadline to register for the 2017 session is April 14. Additional details on the school and an online application on the GSB website at www.gsblsu.org. The site also provides a complete list of courses and faculty, along with other information. Bankers may also get information on how to apply by calling the school office at (888) 278-0025.

MBA Education Foundation Gifts from banks, bankers support foundation’s mission To fund scholarships, financial education in Mississippi The Mississippi Bankers Association Education Foundation, a non-profit subsidiary of the MBA established in 2012, is completing its 2016 campaign to raise funds to support its mission of providing college, high school and banker scholarships and promoting financial education in Mississippi schools and communities. Jerry Host, president and chief executive officer of Trustmark National Bank, Jackson, and vice chairman of MBA, serves as president of the Education Foundation. The Foundation Host awards annual scholarships in conjunction with the Mississippi Young Bankers section and supports personal finance education provided by the MBA, MYB and member banks. The goal of the Foundation is to be a stable, longterm source of funding that will allow for the continuation, and enhancement, of these important activities. Current scholarships include the Orrin Swayze Awards, given to college seniors studying banking and finance; the Leadership Scholarship, given to a college junior studying banking; the Merit Scholarship, given to a high school senior who is the son or daughter of a Mississippi banker; and the Mississippi School of Banking Awards, given to the top students at the MBA-sponsored banking school. (Each scholarship has specific rules governing eligibility and selection criteria). Through support of the Education Foundation, banks and bankers make possible activities which benefit our communities and state – and promote an accurate and positive image of our industry. In a letter to bankers earlier this year, Host encouraged bankers to consider making a gift before the end of 2016 and putting the Education Foundation in their budgets going forward. As a charitable organization, the foundation may accept tax-deductible gifts under state and federal law. Host chairs an eight-member board of
directors which governs the foundation. The board is composed of bankers who serve as members of the MBA Executive Committee and officers of the Mississippi Young Bankers. MBA treasurer Mary Childs of Ripley is vice president of the Foundation. Other board members are Bob Glover of Ripley, George Marx of Hazlehurst, Kent Mortimer of Kilmichael, Wes Rouse of Hattiesburg, Frank Sibley of Marks, Bobby Steinriede of Hollandale and Mitch Waycaster of Tupelo. Mac Deaver, MBA president, serves as secretary-treasurer of the Foundation. Since it began fundraising in November 2012, the Foundation has received over 100 cash gifts from 60 corporate and individual donors. A number of these are recurring annual gifts. Presently, after awarding $15,500 in scholarships in 2016, the Foundation has a fund balance of $190,500. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded a total of over $65,000 in scholarships. Under policies set by the board, cash gifts to the foundation’s general fund can be accepted without restriction. Any non-cash gifts or gifts designated for a particular purpose require approval by board action. The board has established five levels of recognition for those making gifts to the foundation. Bankers are encouraged to make gifts in memory or recognition of persons who have made notable contributions to Mississippi banking. A Pledge Card, along with other information on the Education Foundation, are available on the MBA website – www.msbankers. com. All bankers are encouraged to contact Deaver to get answers to questions.

MBA Legislative Update THE MISSISSIPPI BANKER
Mississippi elects Congressmen, judges This November more than 135 million Americans voted in the Presidential election. While 58% of Mississippians voted for Donald Trump for President, a number of important local races were also decided. Including races for the United States House of Representatives, the Mississippi Supreme Court, and the Mississippi Court of Appeals. In Congressional races, each of Mississippi’s incumbent Congressmen were reelected. Two of our Representatives have obtained leadership positions. Congressman Bennie Thompson, who represents the Second Congressional District, won election to his twelfth term in Congress and is expected to continue to serve as Ranking Member (the top member of the
12
minority party) on the House Homeland Security Committee. Congressman Gregg Harper, who represents Mississippi’s Third Congressional District, also won reelection and was recently named Chairman of the House Administration Committee. Congressmen Trent Kelly from the First Congressional District and Steven Palazzo from the Fourth Congressional District both also won reelection. Mississippi did not have any contested U.S. Senate races in 2016, but Senator Roger Wicker’s seat is up for election in 2018. Senator Wicker is expected to run for reelection. In addition to these Congressional races, Mississippians also voted in a number of important judicial races. Two
THE MISSISSIPPI BANKER
incumbent Supreme Court Justices – Jim Kitchens in Central Mississippi and Dawn Beam in South Mississippi – were reelected to the state’s highest bench. A race to fill an open seat on the Supreme Court required a runoff election. Voters in North Mississippi elected Judge Bobby Chamberlin to fill an open seat created by the retirement of Justice Ann Lamar Two Mississippi Court of Appeals seats were also filled. In Court of Appeals District Two, incumbent Judge Ceola James lost to Latrice Westbrook. The race for Court of Appeals District Three required a runoff, but ultimately incumbent Judge Jack Wilson won reelection.

RECORD-BREAKING YEAR ‘A Banker in Every Classroom’ Over 600 presentations made by Mississippi bankers across state Governor Phil Bryant proclaimed October 31-November 4, 2016, as "A Banker in Every Classroom" week in Mississippi. During that week, bankers across the state joined with local teachers in an effort like never before to present lessons in personal finance. As a result, more than 600 of presentations were made, reaching approximately 14,000 students. "A Banker in Every Classroom" is a project sponsored by the Mississippi Bankers Association to bring financial education to students in grades K through 12 in Mississippi’s public and private schools. In the project’s six years, more than 2,600 classroom sessions have reached approximately 70,000 students statewide. The project was developed by the MBA in response to the critical need for more financial education in Mississippi schools and communities. “We are finding that, by bringing teachers and bankers together in the local schools, they can reach more students in a meaningful way,” said Mac Deaver, MBA president. “They are best equipped to know what information is most important to make a difference in the lives of young people in their community.”
14
A major objective of "A Banker in Every Classroom" is to develop relationships between bankers and teachers. These relationships have already resulted in many ongoing joint efforts to benefit students, Deaver said. Amy Davis, MBA senior vice president, originated the idea for "A Banker in Every Classroom" and, in just six years it has become one of the largest personal finance projects ever in Mississippi schools. The MBA supports the project, first, by pairing teachers and bankers in local areas and, then, by providing materials and other assistance. Grade-specific materials are available on saving, credit, budgeting and many other personal finance subjects. To participate, bankers and teachers register separately with the MBA, which works to schedule classroom sessions throughout "A Banker in Every Classroom" week. In addition, teachers and bankers are encouraged to make presentations throughout the year. The MBA would like to thank each bank, banker, school and teacher that helped to make this a record-breaking year! American Bankers Association THE MISSISSIPPI BANKER
Dodd-Frank’s Price Tag By Rob Nichols, American Bankers Association President and CEO
More than almost any other issue, student debt is driving whether and how your younger customers engage with your bank. With more than $1.26 trillion in outstanding student loans—nearly five times Nichols what it was in 2004— and seven in 10 of new college graduates having some amount of student debt, a huge share of your customer base is financially strapped. The average recent college graduate spends nearly one-fifth of her salary on repaying debt, and most expect to have student loan debt well into their 40s. Sixty-three percent say their debt prevents them from buying a car or similarly large purchase, and 75 percent say it hinders them from saving for and buying a home. High student debt levels also limit young people’s ability to take on debt to start and grow small businesses. And given the outsize role of small businesses in creating jobs, the student debt wave could be washing away future economic growth and opportunities. How will young Americans move into the financial products that are the bread and butter of relationship banking— home loans, HELOCs, small business loans, credit cards and car loans—if they
are spending so much to repay their college or grad school debt? Ultimately, many of them won’t. Imagine the economic growth that could be unleashed if young Americans had hundreds of billions of extra dollars to invest in starting businesses, to save for their futures and to buy new homes and cars. Banks had nothing to do with the quintupling of student debt, which took place over a period when the federal government essentially took over the student loan market. But this debt is preventing our young customers and employees from achieving their financial goals and developing deeper, lifelong relationships with their banks. We need to act. First, we are encouraging companies to help their employees tackle their debt. It can be hard to justify saving for retirement when you have tens of thousands of dollars outstanding at 8 percent. Paying down debt offers the surest return many young Americans can find in the market, and it’s a great way to attract—and retain—young talent. At the American Bankers Association, we recently launched a student debt repayment benefit, contributing up to $1,200 per year toward any employee’s student loans. Second, ABA, with the assistance of our Endorsed Solutions Banker Advisory Council, is evaluating companies that offer student debt repayment benefit
solutions that banks can offer to their employees. While just 4 percent of employers nationwide offer such a benefit, more than 80 percent of millennials say this kind of benefit would be a “deciding factor” or make a “considerable impact” in whether they take a job or stay with an employer. Second, we are exploring legislation to change the way student debt repayment is taxed—with a goal of helping borrowers get out of debt sooner so they can more fully engage with you. When the new Congress convenes, we will be working with lawmakers to develop this proposal. Third, we are training bankers and offering resources for our members’ customers to help them understand student debt and its implications—and learn what restructuring and refinancing options might be available to them. Student debt and the cost of college are the single biggest financial worry for Americans under 40. In partnership with ABA and your state associations, America’s banks are tackling this problem and positioning student borrowers to make the transition to adulthood a little sooner.
