ith July just around the corner, there’s still time to consider giving up alcohol for a good cause.

The Roxby Downs’ Alco-

hol and Substance Abuse Forum is hosting ‘Dry July’ next month to help raise funds to go towards cancer support organisations across Australia.

All funds raised in South Australia will go towards Cancer Council SA, Dry July Foundation Support-

ing SA and Flinders Medical Centre, who will use the funds for projects which reduce the stress and ease the burden of those affected by cancer.

“I lost a grandmother to cancer and have a close

friend who is currently undergoing treatment,” she said.

“If we can abstain from alcohol for a month that’s the least we could do to raise funds for something that helps people affected by cancer.

A presentation was conducted on Wednesday evening at the Roxby Downs Community Youth Centre and also during the day at Roxby Downs Area School, targeted at teenagers who are learning to drive.

While the RAP was originally designed for year 11 high school students, it has broad appeal

and has been used to educate other organisations including sporting clubs, correctional services facilities and community groups, about the dangers of inattentiveness on the road.

The core message of RAP is “you get to choose the risk: but you don’t get to choose the consequences.”

The presentation, which lasted 100 minutes, confronted attendees with a realistic insight into road crash trauma.

Mr Campbell covered a range of topical issues including decision making, risk taking and choices, speaking up when you feel unsafe, being a safe passenger,

being a safe pedestrian, attitudes to road use and generational change, and looking after our mates.

Mr Campbell also covered common risks on country roads, particularly the effects of fatigue when driving long distances.

Th e p re s e nt at i o n proved so effective some students who attended the school session attended the later community session with their parents.

Roxby Road Safe’s Michelle Hales said the presentation provided some very strong safety messages that made those in attendance reflect on their own driving behaviour and that of others.

T

he ‘Toothy Test Pilots’ thought their Sh*tbox Rally journey was over before it really begun after blowing a gasket just outside Port Augusta last weekend.

The rally, which travels from Adelaide to Cairns to raise funds for cancer research, tests teams in cars worth less than $1000 and stopped in Roxby Downs for the first overnight stay last Saturday.

But the Toothy Test Pilots were able to continue on the rally after a generous donation by local couple Michael and Annabelle Croad.

Andamooka Yacht Club’s Pip Stafford shared an unexpected reunion last week with travellers Rob and Bernadette Sutton and their camels.

Mr Croad said the car had been sitting in the yard for a while and when the opportunity arose to donate it to a worthy cause they didn’t think twice.

“The rally teams are raising money for a good cause and deserved to be able to try and complete it,” he said.

Mr Croad requested the team take a photo of Troy “Gummy” Gum, of whom they donated the car in honour, with them to Cairns.

“Troy helped us buy the car years ago so it seemed fitting that we send her off in the Sh*tbox Ral-

ly,” he said.

“Driving a sh*tbox on that kind of journey is something Troy would definitely had a go at, even without the rally and support of others.”

Mr Gum passed away in 2012 to pancreatic cancer, a loss which was mourned by the Roxby Downs community. His memory is celebrated every year with the Troy Gum Memorial Match in the Far North Football League, which was also held last weekend between Hornridge and East Roxby.

“The Troy Gum Memorial Match means the world to us,” Mr Croad said.

“Especially as people cared enough to start it and keep it going in memory of such a special person.”

Camels pass through Roxby

R

esidents of Roxby Downs were intrigued by the appearance of six camels making their way through the town last week.

The camels were on a trek with their owners Bernadette and Rob Sutton who stopped over at the Roxby Downs Racecourse for a few nights last week.

Local businesswoman Pip Stafford shared an unexpected reunion with the duo and their six camels last week: “I met (Rob and Bernadette) back in 2010, whilst they were on their camel trek from Gympie, Queensland, (their home town) to Melbourne and back.

Bernadette and Rob had the pleasure of sleeping in our hay shed in the middle of a Hunter valley winter. My Dad, Alan Stafford (self-appointed Mayor of Segenhoe), proudly offered up his hay shed, with a few frothy tops that kept the un -likely group up chatting until the early hours.

I decided I needed more time with them, and so that night I asked Rob if perhaps I could join him and Bernadette on the next leg of their adventure. They were to ride a further few kilometres to Gundy NSW, a ride that would take a day. I was surprised

when Rob replied that he would be happy to have me ride with them.

The next morning, I was directed to Black Jack, the biggest camel and the leader of the camel train. Once I was settled in, Rob gave the signal, black Jack and all the other camels rose and we headed north towards Gundy.

Fast forward to 2017.

My partner, Charlie and I had just moved to (Andamooka) to run the Andamooka Yacht Club. (Last week) a few of our regulars arrived in a very excited state.

They explained that they

had just come across a couple with six camels walking towards Roxby Downs. I instantly thought of Bernadette and Rob, but it had been seven years since I had seen them and I wondered aloud if they were still travelling.

Australia is a big country, surely it could not be the same couple? Co-indecently our customers found the cameleers on their way home and re-told them that they had coffee out at the Andamooka Yacht Club that was run by Pip Stafford. Bernadette remembered my name and

remembered that I had rode with them years ago. With the bush telegraph at its best, we ended up locating Bernadette and Rob’s camp site at the Roxby Downs race track and that very night we sat around the fire with them marvelling at their journey and the fact that we had run into each other in the vast SA outback.”

Grant for school gardens

chools, youth groups and childcare centres are being encouraged to apply for grants worth $2000 each under the Yates Junior Landcare Grants for Gardens program.

Members of the community are encouraged to submit their design for a dream garden within their school grounds or communities.

“Last year’s program saw 1000 students and 100 volunteers get grubby on 13 fantastic, creative projects,” Yates Horticultural Communications Manager, Angie Thomas said.

Local weight loss challenge on track

W

ith more than 50kg lost already, the Fabulous Figures weight loss challenge is well on track at its halfway point.

The eight-week challenge, organised by Deb Price, has seen 32 people sign up for weekly weighins and support.

Participants pay $50 each to join the challenge, with half of the prize pool going to the person with the greatest weight loss at the end, and the other half being donated to a charity of their choice.

“Out of the 30 or so people, there’s between about 13 and 15 who are continually weighing in,” Mrs Price said.

“So far there has been a combined weight loss of 52.4kg over the four weeks, so for that amount of people that is amazing.”

Challenge participants are not bound to any particular diet or exercise regime, with the challenge more about providing a supportive environment to assist people to meet their goals in whatever way works for them.

Weigh-ins are held every Friday and are available early and late in the day around people’s working and family commitments.

Mrs Price said some “challengers” had joined the Move It exercise classes currently on offer the Roxbylink gym, while others had

also notched up some non-weight loss achievements over the last four weeks – including enjoying the social aspect of the group.

The person leading the challenge at the four-week mark has lost about five kilograms so far.

“Roughly five kilograms is pretty good for four weeks!” Mrs Price said.

With the inaugural Fabulous Figures challenge losing a total of 127kg last year, this year’s group is well on track to beating that number.

“There’s four weeks left so hopefully we can double our number and beat the 127kg – we’re on par and doing well,” Mrs Price said.

Leadership in Education Once again Anthony Semann has challenged local educators, business and community members in our region to re-think leadership and what it means to lead with courage and authenticity.

Anthony will be back again this month to inspire a group of 24 locals made up mostly of educators with every childcare and education site represented.

Anthony recently challenged participants to think about the forms of courage they can identify in our community as well as the forms of courage we need to see moving forward. Having studied the nexus between leadership and courage for his PhD, his research has taught him that courage is not about being fearless, but facing fear. It is not overcoming adversity – but rather sitting with adversity. It is grace under pressure. Mary Anne Radmacher said courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying “I will try again tomorrow.”

As learning is a life-long process, educators who can inspire hope and instil wonder in the learners around them have great influence in cultivating the mindsets and learning attitudes of their students. Napoleon Bonaparte said “A Leaders is a dealer in hope”, which is why Anthony is supporting this local working group to develop hopeful, authentic, courageous and connected leadership skills that enable them to inspire and empower the people around them.

All project participants are undertaking an action-research project within their workplace or the community, and shared their research questions with the group at the recent training. Hospitality students cooking up a storm WRITTEN BY EMMA ZIRKEL

T

he culinary skills of a group of year 11 students at Roxby Downs Area School (RDAS) are being put to the test with the introduction of a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations this year.

The course is a stepping stone for students who are looking to not only gain kitchen experience but are also considering pursuing careers in the hospitality industry.

Students are required to undertake 140 hours of work experience with some completing this component of the course at local eateries in town including the Roxby Club, Tavern, Dunes Café and Chives.

“It’s the first time we have ever run this course up here so it’s very exciting,” RDAS home economics teacher Claire Meatheringham said.

“At the end of the year the students will

receive a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations which is a great hospitality certificate to have.”

Each week the students cook a different dish to learn various techniques utilised in the hospitality industry, with some students mentioning salted caramel tarts and Caesar salads as the highlights from the year.

“It’s really rewarding when you see the final product on the plate,” home economics student Ethan Hodgetts said.

“Sometimes we feel like we’re on Masterchef running around the kitchen and getting everything done but we have fun and Ms Meatheringham is a great mentor,” Demi Gow-Smith added.

Mining Minds, who had their launch catered by the RDAS year 12 home economics class in 2014, has come on board to sponsor the uniforms of the students.

The sleek new aprons feature the Mining Minds logo emblazoned on the front and will be worn by students when catering functions.

ocal skin expert Bianca Johnston is rebranding her current business, Skin You’re In, and relaunching it as Azala Aesthetics.

Mrs Johnston will also be introducing a chemical peel in the future as part of the current skincare and anti-aging treatments she provides which include LED Light Therapy, Lymphatic drainage and diamond peel microdermabrasion, as well as other beauty services.

“I’m wanting to offer the people of Roxby Downs as much as I can,”

she said.

“Being so far away from Adelaide for people to do a lot of these treatments can be quite expensive when factoring in travel costs.

Learn a new skill T

he Roxby Downs Multicultural Cooking Club is at it again, with another cooking club class scheduled in June.

Recently, attendees have been able to watch, taste and learn so many wonderful recipes including African ribs, Baklava, Bunny Chow and Leche Flan. The June class will feature how to hand make ‘Chinese wontons’ in a chicken noodle soup and an Asian

Coconut agar agar dessert.

The cooking club comprises of a regular group of attendees fast becoming great cooks! It is also a nice afternoon together, sharing foods, and cultures in an informal relaxed way.

The next two-hour class includes demonstration, recipe and tasting for only $10 and is on Saturday 24 June from 1-3pm in the Roxby Downs Community Youth Centre. owel Cancer Awareness Month is an initiative of Bowel Cancer Australia running throughout the month of June to raise public awareness of a disease that claims the lives of 77 Australians every week.

Bowel cancer is the second most common type of newly diagnosed cancer in Australia affecting both men and women almost equally, and is Australia’s second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month has a positive message – saving lives through early detection – as bowel cancer is one of the most curable types of cancer if found early. If you are over 50, screening should be done every one to two years and if you are younger than 50, you can still be tested; talk to your GP today.

Heating your home

N

ow that the cold weather has well and truly set in, it’s a good time to look at heating your home efficiently.

South Australians use more energy for heating their homes rather than cooling them down. This means that come the winter months, electricity bills can get very high.

However, there are a few simple ways to be kind to the environment and kind to your wallet.

To make your home’s heating more effective: • Dress for the season. Jumpers, beanies and slippers not only feel good to wear but they allow you to set your thermostat at a lower temperature.

• Assess the size of the space you need to heat and choose the right heater.

• The lower you can set your thermostat, the less energy you will consume. Choose a level that is comfortable for you knowing that for every degree lower you set your heater can reduce running costs by up to ten per cent.

• Check your home for draughts.

Also consider opening your blinds during the day and letting the sunlight heat your home - it’s free! Don’t forget to shut your blinds at night to keep the heat in.

Insulation can break down over time, so it’s a good idea to check if your home’s insulation needs replacing or topping up. Dancing for a cure WRITTEN BY EMMA ZIRKEL

W

eeks of preparation by Roxby Academy of Dance (RAD) students paid off when they took to the stage for dance spectacle CanDance for a Cure at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on May 27.

Almost 60 students along with their families and RAD staff made the trip to Adelaide to perform with other dance schools from across the State on Adelaide’s biggest stage.

Monique Gobbie (Miss Monique) said she was proud of how the students performed.

“I’ve performed at CanDance every year we’ve been involved and this was my first year teaching,” she said.

“After the students finished dancing I looked at Lana and I was like ‘I can’t believe you get to do this every day’.

“I was filled with such pride because I trained so hard with the team in the lead-up and it was amazing to see.”

“Preparing for the event in such a short amount of time we had to train extremely hard for it,” Miss Monique said.

“We also had adults performing this year for the first time so they got to experience it too which was really exciting as they are parents of other students and have only helped

backstage previously.

“So this was a great opportunity to give their time to shine.”

RAD has performed in the event for the previous five years, an achievement which was acknowledged by CanDance who gave Miss Lana an award on stage.

“It was really exciting for Miss Lana because

making the trip down to Adelaide every year for it requires so much effort,” Miss Monique said.

“We couldn’t have been more proud of everyone on the night. It was amazing and definitely a new eye-opening experience for myself and Miss Jade as the new teachers.”

A

n early, quick turnover by the Roxby Districts Miners set the pace for the rest of their B grade game against the East Roxby Roos on Friday night.

Despite their impressive form, the

Roos were put through their paces as they worked to keep up with the Miners.

The Roos’ sheer determination was commendable in the first quarter, with formidable shooting duo Jessica Hassett (GA) and Alexandra Nedelkovic (GS) appearing to sink every goal and Ines Badman (GK) putting on the pressure in the Miners’ goal ring.

However the Miners were a force to be reckoned with as highly skilled shooters Hayley Wurfel (GS) and Emma Neilson (GA) filled any gaps left open by the Roos’ defence, using it to their advantage and streaking

ahead of the competition with a six point lead by quarter time.

Coming into the second quarter it was clear the Roos were hungry for the ball.

The Roos’ Chloe Odgers (GD) stepped up and put on an impressive performance by providing constant support to her teammates from mid court to the goal ring.

However, the hunger of the Miners’ was evidently more insatiable as the team created a greater distance between themselves and the Roos.

Despite a powerful effort from Roos’ Carmen Sims (C), the Min-

ers’ Kelsey Hampel (C) didn’t relent, weaving her way through the gameplay and making herself available for the ball at all times.

The Roos managed to narrowly close the gap by half time but the Miners would prove too strong in the second half by dominating much of the game play.

Despite a change-up in the goal ring for the Miners’ with Ashlie Ali (GS), the shooters managed to work collaboratively and secure goal after goal.

At three quarter time the Miners had secured their lead and it was up to the Roos to outplay them in the

final quarter in order to keep up.

A change in the Roos’ team lineup late in the game seemingly had little effect on the team’s performance as the Miners pulled further ahead.

The Miners mid court shone in the final quarter with Parewai Thomas (WD), despite fierce defence from Bianca Caden (WA), providing constant support to defenders Stephanie Forsyth (GD) and Abby Telfer (GK) who managed to secure some impressive turnovers.

The Miners managed to hold on for a 23-point victory with a full time score of 50-27.

First win for OD Devils

T

he Olympic Dam Devils held off a determined East Roxby Roos for the first win of the 2017 Far North Football League season on Saturday.

In a match played in perfect, sunny winter conditions, East Roxby got off to a quick start and took the lead early, but the Devils came back to have a slight lead at the first break, 4.1 (25) to the Roos’ 3.2 (20).

That turned out to be a reoccurring theme for the rest of the game, with the Devils maintaining a narrow lead throughout but the Roos fighting at every opportunity.

The Devils went into the last quarter leading 9.4 (58) to 6.8 (44), but the

Roos showed they were not about to hand the game over with a final-quarter comeback that had their supporters on their feet.

To the Devils’ credit, they maintained their composure and managed to hold out the Roos for a much-celebrated first season win by just seven points; 10.7 (67) to the Roos’ 8.12 (60).

Best for the Devils were Nick Howard, who was consistent all game; Michael Shaw with a workman-like performance; youngster Travis Wait who stepped up in a senior match; along with Ryan Bennett and Tyson Hornhardt.

The Roos’ were well served by Dale King, Kirk Kirvan, Stuart Orr, Shane Faulkner and Nick Hill.

Miners too good for Hornridge

T

he Roxby Districts Miners proved too strong in their 114-point win over Hornridge in the FNFL opening match on Saturday.

The Miners showed why they are league leaders, kicking five goals to Hornridge’s one in the first quarter and then holding them scoreless for the second and third quarters.

Sean Mcivor laid on seven goals for the Miners, who went into the final quarter with a devastating 21.13 (118) tally over Hornridge’s 1.3 (9).

The last quarter was by far Hornridge’s best, as they managed to break out of the Miners’ clutches and finish

the match with 3.7 (25), while the Miners cruised to a 21.13 (139) win.

Hornridge’s best players were Simon Henke, Cam Alves, Zac Lynch, Brodie Farnham and Joshua Mewburn, while for the Miners, Ricky Prosser, James Telfer, Max Renfrey, Dylan Gamble and Spencer Crafter-King were their best.

All four FNFL teams now have a bye for the June long weekend, with the league sending its first representative side to the Mortlock Shield in Port Lincoln.

Local games resume on 17 June with Olympic Dam and the Miners in the first match for the day at 1pm, followed

by Hornridge and East Roxby at 3pm.
