Walking the Wall for Cancer

Greg Davis, a local employee for BHP Billiton, Olympic Dam, is climbing the Great Wall of China in his bid to help raise money for cancer research.

He and his wife, Jude, will trek 42kms along the Great Wall as part of a fundraiser organised by the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation.

The non-for profit organisation relies solely on the generosity of others to remain funded and operational.

FMCF holds regular fundraising appeals globally, including trips through Vietnam, Borneo and China, as well as more local balls, luncheons and seminar opportunities.

100% of all donations received by the foundation goes directly to supporting cancer research based at Flinders Medical Centre.

Greg and Jude will start their trek on April 9, 2012, but not before they raise at least $20,000 for the foundation.

Greg explained that large inspiration behind his participation in this trek is that three out of his five immediate family members have been directly affected by cancer, and that it was his wife, Jude that first suggested it.

“From when she first brought it up, I thought it would be a great challenge to raise some funds and help the medical centre out,” said Greg.

Each trek hosted by the FMCF allows only a certain amount of

participants, and this particular trek, only 20. Greg and Jude realised the fantastic opportunity ahead of them, not only to help with cancer research, but also to visit one of the world’s greatest landmarks. “You have to raise a certain amount of funds otherwise you wont be on the trip so there’s a minimum we have to raise, and we’d never been to China so why not give it a go!”

Greg concedes that he’ll have to do a bit of training before April, considering he and Jude will be walking for seven hours a day, and at times on 80 degree angles. “I’ve got to get a bit fit!” he said. “My wife runs 15km a week, so she’s a bit fitter than I am!”

After only recently receiving clearance to start fundraising, Greg has launched into it by approaching locals for support.

“I’ve got the good old lolly jar going at the moment in there which will earn a few dollars, and I’ve also gone through BHP Billiton and they will match-give,” he said.

“I’m also going to go around and try and get some sponsorship from local people and other local stores.”

Greg is optimistic that the Roxby Downs community will get behind this cause “I think they will, from the people that I’ve talked to so far, it’s been really positive.”

Ringed brown snake at OD Airport

Other snakes typical to this area include the extremely venomous Mulga Snake and Western Brown Snake, venomous Desert Whip Snake, harmless Desert Banded Snake, venomous Curl Snake, non-venomous Blind Snake and harmless Legless Lizards.

This sighting may serve as a warning to locals to keep an eye out for snakes as the warmer months draw near.

Grand opening of oval lights

he new Roxby Downs Town Oval Lights will be officially ‘switched on’ by BHP Billiton and Roxby Council at a free community event on Friday, September 16.

The whole community is invited to come celebrate from 5pm and the event is sure to please, with something for everyone, from giveaways to fireworks.

The event will also include come and try sports, sporting personalities, a free barbecue, music, bar and canteen facilities, an Olympic Dam interdepartmental touch football game and the official opening of the town oval lights.

The eagerly anticipated new lights, funded by BHP Billiton, will greatly improve luminance levels for sports training, matches and community events, and will illuminate the oval well in time for summer.

Project sponsor, Jason Schell said, “The kids will have a great time. From 5pm there will be alternating sports for 5 – 15 year-olds on the oval co-ordinated by the sports associations themselves together with Roxby Leisure and the Roxby Downs Sports and Recreation Forum.

“Other entertainment including a jumping castle, as well as prizes and activities for the longest footy kick, biggest softball hit and biggest cricket hit will lead up to a round-robin BHP Billiton inter-departmental touch football game between the Mine, Surface, Services and HSEC starting at 8pm,” he

added.

The Roxby Downs Cricket Association will be manning the bar while the Roxby Downs Miners are in charge of the canteen. The Roxby Downs Scouts will be running a free sausage sizzle for the kids generously donated

by Sodexo from 5.30pm.

“Big thanks to Sodexo, who have donated the sausage sizzle for the kids which will include a free fruit box too,” Mr Schell said. “Adults can purchase food and drinks from the bar and canteen.”

To ensure your child doesn’t miss out on the sports activities, register them at the Roxby Leisure Centre by 5pm Thursday 15 September. Late registration on the night will be available.

The official opening

Earlier this year, BHP Billiton generously donated $1.295 million towards the project.

The new lighting system consists of four 30 meter sports field lighting columns which are operated by a control panel located in the club house.

As previously reported in The Monitor, Bill Boehm, Town Administrator at the Roxby Downs Council said that the installation of the improved

lighting has been a long time in the making and is pleased BHP Billiton decided to voluntarily initiate and fund the construction.

According to a BHP Billiton spokesperson, the installation process is ahead of schedule as it was planned to be completed by summer.

“In particular, this will have most benefit in summer when it’s often too hot to use the oval during the day, and will enable people to use the oval at night both for organised sports and general exercise,” the spokesperson said.

“This will be a great community event that shouldn’t be missed,” said Mr Schell.

Police warning to SEARCH ON FOR LOCAL YOUNG ACHIEVERS outback travellers N

olice would like to remind motorists and tourists the far north of South Australia is a remote and an unforgiving place to unprepared travellers.

Recently a 45-year-old South Australian man nearly lost his life after he became fatigued and disorientated while riding a motorbike on route to Birdsville.

Had it not been for the efforts of locals, and Emergency Services the missing man would have died.

Police, National Parks and Wildlife Service would like to remind all travellers contemplating trips to remote areas to be prepared and plan your trip very carefully.

Visitors in the Simpson Desert are required to have a Desert Parks Pass that provides information about what to take and what to do in an emergency. These passes can be collected from National Parks and Wildlife Service on 1800 816 078.

Motorists should travel as a group, have appropriate communications between ve-

hicles/bikes such as UHF radio, plus either HF or a satellite phone, and an EPIRB. (emergency positioning indicating radio beacon) Travellers to remote areas should provide a communications travel plan with relative or friend which would include regular check-ins, vehicle details, who is travelling, and a detailed itinerary.

If travellers fail to call in, the contact person can then alert the appropriate authorities.

Travellers should carry vehicle spare parts including extra fuel, enough food and water for the trip, plus at least 3-4 days food and water supplies for emergencies.

Missing person searches by Police, Emergency Services and volunteers, involving aircraft and other resources are difficult in remote areas and both costly and time consuming. All travellers and holidaymakers to the far north and remote areas of the State are reminded to act responsibly by planning and preparing their trip carefully as conditions can change unexpectedly.

The Annual event is the major fund raising activity for the RFDS Roxby Downs Auxiliary with all proceeds from the day going to the RFDS, a cause which RFDS Roxby Downs Auxiliary committee member Scott Gaskin is passionate about.

“We all know someone who has needed the RFDS at some stage and we would be lost without them and their services,” Mr Gaskin said.

Every one is welcome. “I would encourage everyone to attend, bring your family, join your mates, have a few drinks and make it a great day while raising money for a worthy cause”. Scott (or Yak to those that know him) also added “there is a lot of new people in town who do not know what the golf day and auction is about, so we need to spread the word as much as we can.”

Classifications make it tough to find rural doctors

he classification of some rural areas, including Roxby Downs and Andamooka, is proving a difficulty to attract doctors to South Australian country towns.

The Rural Doctors Association of Australia has recently launched a national ‘Stop the Rot!’ roadshow to highlight problems with the new Australian Standard Geographical Classification- Remoteness Area system.

Many smaller rural communities, such as our own, have been placed in the same category as larger regional centres, including Hobart, proving it hard to entice doctors to practise in smaller towns.

Incentive payments are now the same for some small towns reducing encouragement for doctors to stay in smaller communities.

Practice and Clinic said that the change in classifications does not take into account smaller and bigger towns in enough detail to where services are located.

He believes that there is a minimalistic approach to recruiting not only doctors but all health staff in Roxby Downs.

“The Roxby Downs Health Board could take a more active role in recruitment,” Dr Lewis said.

Due to the number of people lobbying against the new classification system he believes it should be modified as it is not as precise as the old system.

Dr Lewis said that something more will be needed in recruiting doctors for Roxby with town growth. He believes a community approach to recruiting would be more successful. “We need to sell Roxby as a place to come,” he said.

“But the current incentive system is not enough... The biggest problem is in the shortage of GPs in the country. We are quite well off

in Roxby.”

Dr Lewis stressed that if the community want better services than the minimalistic approach more voices are needed and so is a lot of money.

“There is a need for community involvement in health recruiting in both areas of nurses and doctors. We need to sell Roxby and make it attractive, perhaps then there would be more success.”

He said that doctors have the incentive but nurses do not. Nurses are paid the same wage no matter where they are based.

As for Dr Lewis, the classification would not have changed his mind on moving to Roxby Downs. Dr Lewis and his wife moved 18 months ago to Roxby due to his wife’s job with the church, not a medical position.

“I like knowing people in more than one circle of interaction, seeing them at church, or in the street and in the clinic,” he said.

Active Woomera community entertains locals

The Woomera community has been a hive of activity lately, with plenty going on to amuse young and old.

We were very fortunate to host a visit from a RAAF Hot Air Balloon and its team headed by Squadron Leader Philip O’Donnell. The group met with excited locals at the Woomera Area School oval at 8.30am, and before long groups of lucky people (children and adults alike) were being treated to free tethered flights. Many of the children were lucky enough to go up more than once! The morning was extremely enjoyable, and the kids ‘had a blast’!

Another ‘hot event’ emerging from Woomera recently involved a group of volunteers in yellow, an old car, breathing apparatus, petrol, and a few bright sparks. The local CFS, an active volunteer group in Woomera, had a vehicle fire training session at Pimba last week, where the group repeatedly set alight an old car as the volunteers battled to put it out, learning valuable skills that could well save

someone’s life one day. As we all know, living in a rural environment presents its own special circumstances when it comes to road safety, and with teams like this looking out for us we can all rest a little easier.

The Youth Centre has been very busy recently, as the kids have grouped together with Coordinator Lauren Dodge to start a big fundraising push to replace some of the out of date equipment at the Centre. The kids have been well supported by Outback Community Authorities with a couple of generous grants which has allowed them to enjoy some special activities while still being able to save for new equipment. While the kids have already held a successful BBQ fundraiser and a morning family sports and fun day for Father’s Day, their next big adventure is the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2 double screening at the Woomera Theatre on 24 September, starting from 5.30pm. The Youth Centre will be holding a cake stall during the break between the films, offering some delightful concoctions such as Cauldron Cakes, Cock-

roach Clusters and more. The Woomera Board will be on hand to help raise more money for the kids with their own “potions stall” set up with a variety of elixirs and other refreshments available for a small cost. There will be more substantial meals available to order, please remember to bring some ‘muggle money’ to feed the tummy. The Youth Centre are also offering up some hand-made wands for sale as a souvenir for the night – numbers are limited, but the craftsmanship is superb.

Speaking of the Theatre, as well as the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2 double screening, there is a special “Old Fashioned Movie Night” scheduled for 8 October.

This is a chance to wind back the clock, with an “old school” film experience with a screening of an old feature reel followed by Red Dog, starting at 7pm. With ushers on hand to take you to your seats, popcorn and choc-top sellers roaming the aisles, and old-style movie tickets from the 80s it’s sure to be a fun night. The film has had huge acclaim from around Australia and should be worth the visit alone.

A reported gas leak, which occurred on August 7 outside the new Police Station premise on Burgoyne Street became a matter of interest to emergency services.

“In the early hours of Sunday morning after the Roxby Races, a garden stake had been driven through the gas line that feeds the police station, this was since before the building had been handed over,” explained CFS Brigade Captain, Brett Atkins. “Due to the rain we had leading up to that weekend it had made the ground soft enough for the gas to escape in a large quantity.”

The area was subsequently made secure, a gas fitter was contacted to isolate the gas, and came to repair it the next day.

The more recent incident, which occurred Monday, August 29, saw an unknown green substance in the roadside gutter. CFS Brigade Captain Brett Atkins explained the misapprehended substance, “was confirmed by CFS to be a green coloured concrete mix, that someone had washed from equipment into the gutter. No action was taken

by CFS,” said Mr Atkins.

Racist claims made against BHP

Dismissed BHP Billiton employee John ‘Jack’ Pearson is alleging his ex-employer “dismissed him because of his race,” according to a report on the ‘InDaily’ website.

Section 351 of the Fair Work Act states that ‘An employer must not take adverse action against a person who is an employee, or prospective employee, of the employer because of the person’s race, colour, sex, sexual preference, age, physical or mental disability, marital status, family or carer’s responsibilities, pregnancy, religion, political opinion, national extraction or social origin.’

Pearson’s accusation follows his dismissal on the alleged basis that the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) was unwilling to work on projects associated with him.

Pearson was quoted in an article in InDaily that he holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in anthropology and indigenous studies, holds a diesel fitter trade and is five subjects from completing a Bachelor of Law. Pearson was employed by BHP Billiton on July 18 as Senior Advisor for Indigenous Programs and was dismissed on August 5.

August 4, Pearson was allegedly handed a letter of allegation made by DEEWR which related to an Aboriginal Cadetship Program that he was involved with in 2009.

According to InDaily; “‘The position of DEEWR in relation to not working with you made your continued employment untenable,’ BHP said in a letter to Mr Pearson dated 19 August 2011.”

Pearson has refuted these claims.

“I have thought deeply over what has happened and I have decided that the termination of my employment was unjust and based upon allegations which were baseless,” Pearson told InDaily.

DEEWR said it was unable to comment while the matter was before Fair Work Australia.

A BHP Billiton spokesperson told The Monitor, “BHP Billiton absolutely refutes any allegations of racism by the company – however as this matter is before Fair Work Australia we will not comment further.

“As it is an employment matter between BHP Billiton and Mr Pearson, we treat it as confidential.

“BHP Billiton is an equal opportunity employer with a diverse workforce of nationalities and cultural backgrounds.”

T

en years on and the world is still healing from the horrific site of two aeroplanes flying into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York.

It was the day that forever changed the lives of millions of people, not only in the United States but all around the world.

What has happened since has been open war on terrorism, seeking revenge for the killing of almost 3,000 people.

But has the response been worth the expense and the loss of far many more lives in the bid to seek out terrorists and their supporters in Afghanistan and elsewhere?

The world changed following the attacks and we will go on paying the price.

September 11 was a pivotal event in history and despite the conspiracy theorists it was a terrorist attack that has put the world on alert. Terror resounded not only in America, but also Australia, as the depth of our close knit alliance

Scars that will last a lifetime with the States was measured and held accountable.

Osama bin Laden, the man held accountable for these horrific attacks was pronounced dead earlier this year, and a siege on his home revealed plans for the al Qaida’s own way of remembering ten years gone by.

So what happens now? Are we confident that we are now wise enough to foil further attacks from al Qaeda?

Authorities have said that there is no indication for an attack from al Qaeda around the anniversary but a Worldwide Alert issued by the State Department sparks fear as it stated, “While we have not identified any specific threats from al Qaida affiliates and allies to attack the United States or our interests on the 9/11 anniversary, U.S. citizens should be aware that al Qaida affiliates and allies have demonstrated the intent and capability to carry out attacks against the United States and our interests around the world. In the past, terrorist organisations have on occasion planned their attacks to coincide with significant dates on the calendar.”

Have we learned anything from the day the world stopped and looked on in horror?

In the matter of 9/11, a decade is too soon to settle on conclusions. On the one hand, the immediate impact of the terrorist attacks is in front of us every day. “Air travel, is vastly different - subtle impacts on politics, on art, on ways of seeing religions and asserting nationalism – is still morphing this way and that. Often the affects are under the surface and it will be years more before they are understood with any clarity.”

There is still so much to learn about fellow man and whether we can all live in harmony on this planet.

It would only take a repeat of 9/11 and the world will be thrown in utter chaos. There is much speculation whether there will be a repeat attack but being cautious is a much better outcome than watching another disaster unravel.

Bin Laden dead or alive, influences the fundamentalists intent on causing death and mayhem.

Vigilance is still our best salvation.

A conversation could change a life “R U OK?”

This is the question Australians are being encouraged to ask on Thursday, 15 September.

R U OK? Day is a national day of action suggesting we connect with our friends and loved ones, reaching out to anyone doing it tough, who may even be thinking about taking their own life and simply ask R U OK? We know people who are vulnerable need to be supported. But how do we do that? A good way of ‘breaking the ice’ is to start a general conversation, perhaps over a cup of coffee, asking ‘How are you going?’ or ‘Are you OK?’ Try to listen without judgement and if you

are concerned, encourage them to see their doctor or offer to make an appointment with their GP. We want anyone who is struggling to get some help. Follow up is essential. Nothing will change unless someone acts and it’s good to know we can do something.

Letter to the Editor Re: Who is running this country? We are blessed in this country to have the rule of law. A temporary government cannot overrule the laws put in place, step by step over the years. They can only do so by legislation.

The boat people issue is about “when do such people begin to enjoy the same rights as Australians”. From a human rights perspective all human beings are equal, but clearly Australians are very privileged. Governments have tried to delay these rights by keeping boat people off shore.

Grant program to support outback communities

T

he Outback Communities Authority (OCA) today highlighted its commitment to strengthening remote and regional communities and improving the quality of life of residents, with the launch of a new program of grants for outback projects.

OCA Chair Bill McIntosh says the program provides funding of up to $10,000 for each grant to assist eligible incorporated bodies to finance a range of projects aimed at supporting communities across outback South Australia.

“The OCA is committed to supporting new and innovative projects that in turn support outback people and add to the unique quality of life outback people enjoy,” Mr McIntosh said.

“This funding could assist organisations to upgrade or establish community facilities, provide training support for volunteers, or purchase equipment, materials or resources such as white goods, playground equipment or sporting equipment.”

The funding is part of the OCA’s new outback grants program, developed in response to a review into how the OCA distributes its funds,

which was initiated when the OCA succeeded the Outback Areas Community Development Trust on July 1, 2010.

The OCA project grants program provides one-off funding to a limit of $10,000, with most grants allocated in smaller project amounts of less than $5,000. It will be available to incorporated bodies with an Australian Business Number (ABN) operating within the OCA’s jurisdiction.

“It is important to recognise the great work of the Outback Areas Community Development Trust with more than 30 years of support

for outback communities,” Mr McIntosh said.

“This new project grants program honours this heritage and builds upon it by encouraging the development of broader outback community projects.”

The OCA will conduct two calls of the project grants program each year, in August and February.

Calls for the first round of grants from the program opens August 31 and closes Friday, September 23, 2011 at 5pm. Guidelines and application forms can be found online or 1800 640 542.

Roxby Leisure Art Gallery is one of 23 entrants from the Far North region participating in the 2011 Advantage SA Regional Awards. Across the State’s seven regions the Regional Awards have attracted 313 entries.

Roxby Leisure was involved in the 2010 Advantage SA Regional Awards, when Youth Services Officer, Shane Hough, won the Youth Award.

Michael Esposito, Operations Manager of Roxby Leisure, is extremely pleased to be an entrant in the Advantage SA Regional Awards again this year, after

recognised for all the work we do. For our community it shows that we can stay competitive with other regional galleries,” Michael said.

“Always give credit where credit is due! For us regional traders we’re often overlooked due to the fact we can’t compete with the major cities.

“For us, we often don’t get the opportunity to showcase some of the more well known exhibitions due to our population size.

“However, with the help of Country Arts SA and local artists we have some fairly major arts exhibitions.

Tyson and Regina Qualmann bought their house from BHP Billiton in 2008 and landscaped 90% of their backyard using local businesses and products.

The local Mitre 10 provided material for irrigation, cementing, plants and odds and ends the Qualmann’s used to finish their spectacular backyard.

Roxby Pool and Yard were able to meet their needs in paving, plants, lawn, pool fencing other landscaping and pool accessories.

Outback Landscaping, a Freedom Pool distributor, was able to supply them with the magnificent fibreglass pool, and they also helped supply some of the irrigation.

The Qualmann’s also received 40 local plants of their choice from BHP Billiton when they purchased the house.

Being the all round handyman, Tyson completed all of the manual labour, with the help of friends and family, from clearing the backyard covered in bark chips, assembling the pergola, to laying the last paver.

All their hard work has paid off and only a couple of years the Qualmanns have transformed their yard from a bare stark yard to a magnificent entaining and play area for the family and friends.

Footy Colours Day is a nationally celebrated day, which aims to raise funds for the Kids for Cancer Foundation.

Event organisers Kelly Harris and the Student Voice Committee asked students to bring a gold coin donation to give to the cause and coupled it with the proceeds from last term’s pyjama day.

Secondary school teacher at RDAS, Kelly Harris, said the children wanted both fundraisers to go towards preventing cancer.

“They just thought it was a really good idea,” she said. “They’re big on

Jack McGuire was quite surprised when he was awarded the Community Person of the Month award in June. Community Person of the Month is project managed by the Community Board with support from The Monitor and Big Sky Credit Union. As part of the award Jack has received $100 to be donated to a charity of his choice. Jack has decided to donate his prize money to the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation in recognition of local hero Johnno Mason’s efforts in cycling in the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation Vietnam Cancer Cycle Challenge 2011 and is fundraising for the 450km bike ride across Vietnam.

Although Jack does not have any idea who nominated him for the award he is excited about being acknowledged. “I don’t do community work for the bells and whistles but it’s nice to be recognised,” he said.

Jack said that all of his community work has revolved around the community radio station, Rox FM. “Hopefully I get my radio show back (A Big Bowl of Muesli). It’s so relevant and prevalent in what I do in the community.”

“I love radio. I’m an entertainer. I love to bring that to the table. In everything I’ve done it comes back to the radio station.”

His first radio event was Meet the Wine Maker three years ago when Jack brought winemaker Thomas Hardy to town. On this occasion approximately $1000 was raised for the event.

Since then Jack has been involved in many community events including being the President of the local RSL, he announces dirt circuit and go kart events, has been the Coordinator for the Relay for Life, is a member of the Freemasons Foundation, and has been involved in the Postie Bash. Another event that Jack has been involved in for the past two years is the Billy Cart Bash, which raised $50,000 in kind and in cash sponsorship.

Jack added, “I have a commitment to the community. I’m very passionate about it. I have found where I fit in and where I don’t which is important.”

Jack said he has used the radio station as a hub to make community events happen and get information out to the community. “It’s ironic that I have been given this accolade in these circumstances. All I hope for is that I get my radio show back. It’s nice to be recognised,” he said.

Jack added, “Roxby is the State’s best kept secret.

It’s different but vibrant. The more people that know about it the better.”

He stressed, “A lot of people do this in the community, not just me. There are a lot of significant people in this town. It’s a pity they all can’t be recognised.”

ROXBY COUNCIL WEEKLY INFORMATION UPDATE

NEWS IN BRIEF COUNCIL RATES 2011/12 Council rates no ces have now been issued. Please pay the first quarterly instalment by the due date to avoid fines and interest being charged.

WASTE MANAGEMENT SERVICES TENDER Residents are advised that Council has advertised and is seeking tenders from suitably qualified contractors with experience in the provision of and delivery of a wide range of Waste Management Services. This includes the collec on and disposal of waste generated from the Roxby Downs Township and Council’s Municipal area and the management of Council’s Resource Recovery Centre. Council is also pursuing a range of op ons, including kerbside and organics recycling and the poten al of waste being transported remote from Roxby Downs, poten ally avoiding large capital costs to upgrade Councils landfill in the near future. A contract period for a period of 5 years with an op on to extend for a further 2 years is envisaged.

Tenders close Monday 19 September 2011 and residents will be advised in due course following considera ons of all submissions received.

PARKING - Richardson Place Parking rules exist to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists and to improve traffic flow. In Richardson Place parking in loading zones, parking in areas designated for people with disabili es and double parking are common problems.

Loading zones are designed to provide easy access to business areas for the purpose of loading and unloading bulky items. Loading zones have me limits to ensure regular turnover. When a vehicle is parked in loading zone and it is apparent that the driver is not ac vely loading items an expia on no ce may be issued.

Parking areas for people with disabili es are designed to enable people with limited mobility to access services and local businesses. Drivers must not park in these zones unless they display a current Australian Disability Parking Permit.

Expia on No ces will be issued for vehicles not displaying the permit. The new fee for parking in a disabled zone is $310,00.

Double parking has become a regular habit for some drivers par cularly around the school zone. This prac ce is dangerous. It slows the general flow of traffic by crea ng additional hazards for other drivers to navigate. Children entering or leaving double parked vehicles need to make their way through legi mately parked vehicles which is unsafe with high poten al for serious accidents to occur. Expia on no ces may be issued.

What State are we in?

A state of confusion…

Reverse parking, while may be required out on the mine site, is classified as illegal in numerous places in South Australia.

The Roxby Council has noted motorists exercising reverse parking in inappropriate areas, including 45 degree specific parking bays in Richardson Place.

Unless stated otherwise, cars must park with the rear of the car facing the road. This includes 90 degree and 45 degree parking, but exempts examples such as parallel parking.

These provisions are outlined in the Australian Road Rules Act and the Driver’s Handbook, which must be read before attaining a car license.

As quoted in the Driver’s Handbook; ‘If a sign states angle parking but does not give the exact angle, you must park at 45 degrees with front to kerb.

‘If a sign or markings indicate 90 degree parking, you may park with front to kerb, unless a sign states otherwise.’

According to Australian Road Rules; If the parking control sign or road marking indicates that the vehicle must be positioned at a specified angle (other than 90°), the driver must position the vehicle: (a) so that the vehicle is at an angle as near as practicable to the specified angle; and (b) if the vehicle is parked on the side of the road—with the rear of the vehicle nearest to the centre of the road.

The rules also state that; If the parking control sign or road marking does not indicate the angle at which the vehicle must

be positioned, the driver must position the vehicle: (a) so that the vehicle is at an angle as near as practicable to 45°, and (b) if the vehicle is parked on the side of the road—with the rear of the vehicle nearest to the centre of the road.

Peter Keller, Roxby Council Works Manager, says Council’s position aligns with state rules.

“It’s okay for BHP to do it out on site because that’s private property, however, it’s illegal to do it in Olympic Dam at this stage, regardless of signage,” he said.

Mr Keller went on to say that unless signage in regards to parking is approved by the Minister for Transport, it too is illegal.

He said that signage in Olympic Dam needs to be proven that it is approved by the Minister and if not, all reverse parked cars in

Olympic Dam are breaking the law.

“The thing that the Council is mainly concerned about is, it should be all or none , in other words if people are going to reverse park out there, everybody would need to do it.

“The biggest concern I have is that then it becomes a habit that people may bring into Roxby downs, which then just creates confusion. It’s just confusing if you have one car rear in, and one front in. For safety reasons, it’s concerning.

“People better than myself, professional people who have gathered all of the information, such as the MAC do the recommendations and if they thought that reverse angle parking was better than front end parking, they would have made it so.”

Unreported damage is costly for Council More damage to council property was detected last week. Due to the height of marks on the pole it was pushed by either a truck or a crane but the incident was not reported to the Council. Cost to repair is approximately $5,000.

Residents are complaining about dog droppings on footpaths, roads and parks and for good reason.

Dog droppings can be a major health issue and can spread disease and infection to other dogs and humans. People may not be aware that dog droppings contain bacteria that are harmful to people. They can carry a variety of common diseases including roundworm, E.coli, tapeworm, heartworms and parvo.

These diseases are dangerous to humans especially young children.

Dog owners or carers who are not picking up their dog’s droppings are leaving the footpaths unhygienic and not respecting the fact that other people use these areas too.

There is also an environmental impact as your dog’s waste gets washed

down into stormwater drains when it rains.

Under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995 a dog’s owner or person responsible for the dog must immediately pick up and dispose of dog droppings from a public place in a lawful manner. The issue is easy to manage. When you are out with your dog, carry bags to collect your dog’s droppings and put them in a bin. Please remember dog droppings cannot be placed in bins unless securely wrapped. These simple actions will improve amenity and make going for a walk a pleasant past time for the whole community.

So the next time you are out with your dog, bring a bag, scoop the poop, and PUT IT IN THE BIN!

Hornridge celebrates team’s best

has been a part of the Far North Football League for 19 years, and the Hornridge Sporting Club for 10 years and works hard to help keep the club successful.

In his emotional address to the Club, words could not explain how he felt.

“It’s just giving people the opportunity to play football really,” he said. “There’s no favouritism or anything like that, whoever comes aboard gets a run – old young or bloody never played footy before.”

Jimbo said he was worked behind the scenes ‘cooking barbies and doing all the s... work’ doing what has to be done.

He said his favourite memory of the club was winning two flags from the bottom.

“We’re back up there now, and hopefully we can win another one before I leave!” he said.

“I’d just like to thank all of the Hornridge people in general – they’re pretty easy going and everyone’s judged the same, no-one’s better than anyone else.

Anyone wants to play for the club, come on board!”

ornridge Sporting Club celebrated their 2011 season on Sunday, September 4 by holding end of year presentations at the Community Club.

Ben Casey, a new addition to the Club was named the Football Team’s Best and Fairest player for the season.

He said he felt ‘honoured’ and ‘lucky’ to have won the prestigious award.

Mr Casey has played in numerous leagues before, and has won Best and Fairest awards for both the Broadview and Willaston Football Clubs.

“It’s been really good fun and I would like to thank the footy club as a whole,” he said.

Mr Casey also thanked Darren Male, Jim McCarthy, Ricky ‘Rooster’ Hanson and Nigel Tuthill from the Hornridge Sporting Club.

Anne Clampett, Director of Austwide Property Service, is very pleased with the growth in her business since moving to the area early this year.

She believes very strongly in the importance of communication and feels this is part of the reason her business is growing so well. Communication is the source of happiness and unhappiness. Generally a lack of communication causes a large amount of grief to all parties concerned in a rental situation. It simply is not good enough for Property Managers to assume owners will be happy with a “no news is good news” policy, they want to hear about what is going on or even what is not going on.

Just because a tenancy is running smoothly this is not reason not to contact the landlord, they want to know that things are going well and that the silence isn’t because they have been forgotten or the Property Manager doesn’t care.

It needs to be remembered many owners of rental properties in Roxby and surrounds live a long way away and often want to be kept in touch with what is happening in the area. Similarly tenants require feedback as well.

Good tenants can often feel frustrated because they are doing the right thing and don’t even get feedback from routine inspections. Anne believes it is good practice to at least leave a note thanking the tenant for the presentation of the property at the inspection. This makes the tenant feel appreciated and encourages them to look after the property; they will continue to ensure the property is well presented for future inspections and feel their efforts are valued.

The level of rents obviously continues to be a hot topic in Roxby, and as a result the standard of housing comes in to question. Integrity needs to be maintained as well.

Tenants have needs, requirements and rights and it must be remembered owners also have obligations to present and maintain rentals in good order. If a tenant has to keep “communicating” with a Property Manager because there are problems, and the Property Manger then has to “communicate” this to the owner, the owner has obligations to respond appropriately, particularly when they are commanding high levels of rent.

Owners who persistently refuse to undertake maintenance or take the cheapest possible option often end up with a lot of unwanted communication. There certainly are tenants who made continual, unreasonable demands and there are landlords who resent spending money, it is important to communicate with these people and sort through issues quickly so they do not blow out of proportion. It is also important to remember the absolute value of truth and stick to it – untruths are not acceptable.

Ready, Set, Go!

undreds of people flocked to the town oval bright and early on Sunday morning to participate in the Roxby Downs Desert Dash.

This year 239 participants gave up their Sunday sleep-in to be part of either the 5km or 10km run or walk. This was a great turnout compared to the 127 participants that were involved in the event last year.

First over the line was for the open 10km race was Christopher Stack with a time of 40 minutes and seven seconds. Bernhard Viljoen came first for the 10km junior male division.

Nicole Montgomerie was the first open female for the 10km run. The 5km open and junior male that crossed the finish line first was Emil Vilijoen. Millie

Young was the first female junior in the 5km and Fiona Kerrish was the first in the open division.

‘Surface’ was the fastest team in the 10km division and ‘Strengthening our Families’ won the team with most members award.

The event also included a healthy barbeque, a massage therapist and a nutritionist to provide the Roxby community with tips to stay healthy.

The event was presented by BHP Billiton Roxby Downs Red Dunes Classic Triathlon and proudly sponsored by BHP Billiton, GHD, Blackwoods, York, Sportspower and Roxby Downs Pharmacy.

Cricket cranks up Andamooka Cricket Club heading into its third season in the RDCA is looking to go even further than its first finals appearance last season. Committee changes have Craig ‘toot toot’ Mclean as President and Rachel Taylor as secretary. New players include Tyson Cox from Whyalla, Ben and Steve and some secret weapons from Andamooka.

Miners win all three flags

oxby Districts Sporting Club (Miners) had a huge result with netball on Friday night after all grades won their respective games in A, B, and C grade.

The A grade certainly lived up to the billing of “game of the year” with Miners and Olympic Dam putting on a great showcase for netball in Roxby Downs. Umpires were supplied by SANA out of Adelaide and they too were impressed by the standard of play.

In a game where there were never more than four goals between the two teams, saw OD leading at quarter time by one goal, 15 - 14. The second quarter saw Miners come out strong and opened up a four goal lead half way through the quarter, however OD steadied and got back to a one goal difference at half time, Miners leading 30 – 29.

The third quarter saw a super contest in centre court between Elyse Weir, Miners and Donna Waldhuter,OD and also Vicky Peters, Miners and Nicole Montgomerie, OD. Both Miners girls got on top early, however the OD girls hit back hard and closed the game down with some great intercept work.

In attack Joyce Takaidza was being fed well by Alicia Roberts while Ali Knights was controlling the circle for OD. At the last break with the scores 46 – 43 Miners way, the game was set up for a great last quarter.

The last quarter saw both defences working overtime, Jess Finsell, Kasiah Barrand and Jaqui Sharp for Miners while Bec Monfries and Kara Edmonds (coming on for Elke Parks) were doing a great job for OD. Bec Eli and Kara Wedding for OD started finding one another putting pressure back on Miners, however they responded with some excellent play from Joyce Takaidza in goals, who won the best on court award for the grand final. The final score was Miners 60 – 57 in a great game between two sides that gave their all, congratulations to all players involved.

19 goal win in B grade The B Grade final started off a close contest with Miners leading over Hornridge Black 15 – 14 at quarter time.

Unfortunately, Hornridge lost their experienced centre, Meg Elliot part way through the first quarter due to injury which unsettled them going into the second quarter.

Miners moved four goals ahead at halftime through some good work by Danielle Weir in centre court combining well with Jess Hassett and Demmy Orr. Up to this point Maddy Evans and Amanda Giles had played well for Hornridge, however the third quarter saw Miners defenders get on top with some spirited netball, both Lisa Johnston and Centaine Casserley of Miners started to take control holding Hornridge to just seven goals with Miners leading 42 – 31 going into the last quarter.

The younger Miners ran out the game extremely well in the last quarter getting right on top to win the Grand Final 58 – 39, with best on court being awarded to Danielle Weir of Miners.

Miners had a much better second quarter with Paulette Uys and Pip Moorehaed for Miners standing tall in defence and with turnovers allowed Miners to get back to level the game at 20 goals all.

The third quarter saw Hornridge changing one of their goalies, maybe unsettling them, allowing Miners to have a 14 – 8 quarter with some good shooting from Libby Steer and Kym Pike.

Miners went into the last quarter 34 – 28 and with some hard running in centre court led by Holly Maine went on to win 52 – 35 in an undefeated season. Paulette Uys was awarded best on court for the final.

Congratulations to all players, coaches and officials on In the C grade, Miners who were undefeated in the lead the end of a successful 2011 season.
