Arid Recovery turns 20 WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

A

rid Recover y will celebrate two decades of operation this Easter, with past employees and volunteers making the trip back to Roxby Downs to join the party.

Arid Recovery General Manager Katherine Tuft said she was expecting hundreds of people to make the trip back to share their stories from the last 20 years.

“We are hoping to get a good spread of different people (attend),” Mrs Tuft said.

“We are getting people from way back when Arid Recovery first started, like Katherine Mosbey and John Read who

are the founders.

“These guys, as well as some of the early researchers and volunteers, put up the fence and first researched the animals on the reserve.”

The 20-year celebrations will kick off with a presentation in the Roxbylink Auditorium from 1pm on Easter Saturday, April 15, which will be followed by a group

photo, barbecue dinner and watching the sunset at the reserve from 5.30pm.

Attendees will be given the option of camping overnight, with the festivities to continue on the Sunday with a breakfast at 8am followed by an explore and catch up session at 9am.

fire at a residential address in Coolibah Street, Roxby Downs caused more than $8,000 in damage after an air conditioning unit caught fire last week.

February 21 – however, a neighbour was treated at the scene by the South Australian Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

Countr y Fire Service crews attended the scene to extinguish the fire while local police secured the area and diverted traffic. Roxby Downs Police Sergeant Mel O’Donnell said the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

Recovery team celebrates milestone CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE To commemorate the 20th milestone, there will also be an art exhibition at the Roxbylink Art Gallery showcasing two decades of Arid Recovery, with the launch to be held on March 23.

Mrs Tuft said she was around for the ten-year anniversary celebrations and was excited to be in charge of the 20 year ones this time.

“I am a bit in awe , it is all pretty exciting,” she said. “We (her and now husband Hugh) were both around for the ten-year celebrations and it was great to have that continuity.

“It is a great time to share stories and talk about what we have achieved so far, as well as what is next.”

Mrs Tuft said there had been much change over the years, with the reserve expanding from 15 to 123 square kilometres.

There had also been a number of new species re-introduced, while changeover of staff highlighting that Arid Recovery acted as a good platform for volunteers and staff to launch broad careers in fields such as conservation.

Big changes like the partnership with Bush Heritage and the University of New South Wales have also taken place in recent years.

Mrs Tuft said big thanks went to BHP Billiton, without whose support Arid Recovery would not be able to achieve what it does.

Power pressure amps up

HP Billiton has put any further expansion plans on hold until a solution can be found to the current South Australian power supply issue.

BHP Billiton Chief Executive Officer Andrew Mackenzie made the comment last week as the company’s half yearly operational report revealed production at Olympic Dam had fallen by 30 per cent, largely due to the major black out in September/October last year.

“We would not look at a major expansion of Olympic Dam unless we can be confident that we have a reliable and affordable source of

power within South Australia,” Mr Mackenzie said in a recent interview.

“We sincerely hope that the government of South Australia and some of the reviews that are underway at the moment that we are contributing to, some of which go to the federal level, actually address some of the great difficulties we have had to face.

“These have cost us $100 million in this period, because of the very poor provision for power within South Australia. That needs to be fixed before we would push ahead with a project like that.”

The South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) has also expressed its concerns with energy supply issues within the State, and designed an application for promi-

nent South Australian businesses to help facilitate negotiations with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for guaranteed long-term energy supply.

While BHP Billiton is currently not involved in this process, a number of companies including Arrium and Rex Minerals have already signed up.

BHP Billiton Olympic Dam Asset President Jacqui McGill said the blackout and the fall in production had virtually meant 203,000 tonnes of copper produced in the past financial year had been for nothing and the company had effectively lost a year’s worth of productivity gains.

With electricity supply continuing to be an issue Ms McGill said there were vital concerns

if this kind of blackout occurred again.

“A lot of people have drawn comparisons between what's happened at Alcoa and our experience at Olympic Dam and there are a lot of real similarities,” she said on a 5AA Radio interview recently.

“The issue that Alcoa saw was the freezing of their furnaces and their pots, which is a significant issue for them and is really impacting their performance.

“We came very close to that situation at Olympic Dam and if it wasn't for the work of my great team in getting temporary generation in place, then we could have been looking at an extensive timeframe to rebuild our entire furnace, which is in the order of 12 months.”

“So this is a significant issue.”

Changes to Monitor home delivery service I n a move to reduce litter in Roxby Downs streets, The Monitor will no longer be delivered to homes around town.

After being delivered to residents’ driveways for a number of years, the newspaper will now only be available for collection from a number of local businesses.

“We understand some of our readers may be a little disappointed that they won’t receive The Monitor in their driveways any longer,” said Managing Editor, Amanda Hudson.

“However, we have continued to receive feedback from organisations and individuals concerned about the environmental impact of our home delivery service, and we decided to make a change.”

While Ms Hudson said negative feedback about the service had reduced in recent times, there were still concerns being raised about uncollected newspapers blowing out of driveways and into near-

by gardens, gutters and reserves which caused a litter problem.

“In addition, our newspapers for delivery were also wrapped in plastic, which added another level of environmental impact,” she said.

Ms Hudson thanked Olympic Dam Sporting Club for its efforts in delivering The Monitor in recent times, as well as Roxby Districts Sporting Club previously.

“Thank you to both those clubs for helping us get The Monitor into local homes each week,” she said.

The Monitor will still be available as usual outside of Roxby Downs, with the newspaper available in Woomera, Pimba, Andamooka and throughout the Far North region.

Roxby Council reforms Desert Fringe milestone will continue: Whitbread F W ith his p ermanent appointment as Roxby Council Administrator announced last week, Geoff Whitbread said he looks forward to continuing the work he began in the role nine months ago.

Speaking to The Monitor, Mr Whitbread said he’d enjoyed his time at the council since joining in an interim capacity mid-last year, and was pleased to stay on.

“The joy of this community is that it is very friendly and it’s pretty optimistic, even though it’s been through some pretty tough times, so it’s a pleasant place to do business in,” he said.

With a long history in local government, Mr Whitbread is well placed to continue the reforms he has already begun into the council’s governance.

“There are some significant challenges both strategically and in in our operations that need to be attended to with urgency, and so that’s a motivation (for me),” he said.

“For the last three or four years I’ve concentrated on resolving business problems for organisations and that’s exactly what I’m doing here.”

One of the key governance reforms for Roxby Council was a new structure, approved by the State Government and BHP Billiton, which would include a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) role in addition to the Administrator.

Recruitment is underway for the CEO and expected to take three to six months.

While he will avoid making any wholesale changes before the CEO is appointed, Mr Whitbread will continue to identify improvement opportunities that can be implemented in the short-term, while ensuring that the Council meets its statutory and legislative commitments in a cost-effective manner.

“We do need some investment in our systems in the way that we do our business, because at the end of the day we’re here to service and provide a great town for BHP’s Olympic Dam and we can’t lose sight of that fact,” he said.

“One of the problems we have as a local government is that our fixed costs are quite significant and people sometimes say to me, ‘why aren’t you cutting back?’ Well we are cutting back, but there are certain things we can’t by law because we are statutorily required to provide them.

“We’ve got a range of acts of parliament that we provide administration for like the development act, dogs and cats, local government act, the indenture – there’s probably 20 or 30 different pieces of legislation that we have responsibility for administering – and regardless of the size of the town or the wealth of the town they all have to be administered to a degree.”

The two-day event this Friday and Saturday features a jam-packed program of circus, comedy, dance and magic shows, visual art exhibitions and free family entertainment.

The event kicks off on Friday night with multi-instrumentalist Adam Page – Chairman of the Beard, bringing “spontaneous sym-

phonies and layered soundscapes to the Desert.”

Saturday’s entertainment includes children’s performers Our Corka Bubs, while The Barracks will host music and entertainment that night hosted by Eloise Green and featuring musician Jamie MacDowell, comedian Sharon Mahoney, Port Augusta’s own Dusty Feet Mob and Desert Voices Choir, and finish with 2016 SA Music Hall of Fame inductees No Fixed Address.

There will also be arts and performance workshops from 10am – 3pm.

Mr Whitbread said he had been heartened by the positive response to the announcement of his appointment last week.

“I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the responses I’ve received from staff and from some members of the community too, that’s encouraging to me,” he said.

Roxby Downs Community Board Chairperson Terry Boylan welcomed news of Mr Whitbread’s permanent recruitment.

“I believe that’s fantastic news for the people of Roxby Downs, I think Geoff has been great in his time here and has really bought transparency to the Roxby Downs Council,” Mr Boylan said.

“I know that a lot of members of the community and those on the board are very happy that he’s now been officially appointed.”

Boylan to farewell Roxby Downs

erry Boylan will soon say goodbye to Roxby Downs, after almost five years at the helm of the Roxby Downs Police.

Clean up Roxby this weekend Roxby Council Community Projects Officer (Environment) Anni Giles is gearing up for Clean Up Australia Day.

I

t’s time to grab your garbage bags and take to the streets with Roxby Downs’ annual Clean Up Australia Day event on again this Sunday.

Last year 25 volunteers took part in the event, collecting 50 large bags worth of rubbish within a three square kilometre radius.

Roxby Council Community Projects Officer (Environment) Anni Giles said she is hoping for a similar turn out again this year.

Alcoholic drink containers were the main source of rubbish previously, with volunteers collecting 31 cans and 39 glass and 19 plastic bottles last year.

Mrs Giles said broken glass was also a commonly found object around the Roxby Downs central area which

was a worrying sign.

But with volunteers witnessing these dangers it had raised awareness of what harm it can cause and a similar turnout would help improve the situation.

“Through last year’s event we were able to raise awareness about the fragile arid environment of Roxby Downs and the need to protect it,” Mrs Giles said.

Volunteers interested in taking part in this year’s Clean Up Australia Day event are to meet in the Lions Park at 9am this Sunday for registration.

Participants are encouraged to wear enclosed shoes and sun smart clothing, and bring a water bottle.

Calls to vaccinate pet rabbits with new release of calicivirus WRITTEN BY PATRICK GLOVER

ox b y D o w n s pet owners are being encouraged to make sure their rabbits’ vaccinations are up to date ahead of the nation-wide release of the calicivirus RHDV1 K5.

The virus is a new strain of the original calicivirus released in 1995 and its purpose is to control the wild rabbit population.

Roxby Council Community Projects Officer (Environment) Anni Giles said whilst the intention of the RHD Boost Project was to reduce the wild rabbit population, there was a risk domestic rabbits may be affected.

“It is expected that the virus will slowly spread by insect vectors, such as bushflies and blowflies,” Mrs Giles said.

“Whilst the intention of the RHD Boost Project is to reduce the wild rabbit [population, there is a risk that do-

mestic rabbits may be affected by the release of RHDV1 K5.

“The Australian Veterinary Association recommends vaccinating rabbits against RHDV1 K5, with those vaccinated likely to be protected against the (virus).”

The visiting vet can be contacted on 8823 3233 to arrange a vaccination for household rabbits.

“It’s critical for us to control pest rabbits – Australia’s most widespread and destructive environmental and agricultural vertebrate pest,” said Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Leon Bignell.

“But at the same time we want to point out the risks to pet rabbits if they aren’t vaccinated.”

“If you haven’t already vaccinated your rabbit, visit your local vet soon.

“Vets have advised me the vaccine is effective against the K5 strain so domestic rabbit owners should vaccinate their rabbits before the release of this

strain or ensure their animals’ vaccinations are up-to-date.”

The calicivirus has been introduced as rabbits are estimated to cause around $200 million worth of damage to Australian agriculture every year, while also being recognised as a potential threat to at least 304 native threatened species.

Broadscale population control was introduced in the past with the release of the myxoma virus followed by the rabbit haemorrhagic virus or calicivirus .

Calicivirus is a naturally occurring virus that has been introduced to Australia to control rabbit numbers as Australian populations are naive to this strain that originated in Korea.

This new K5 strain was released after rabbits begun building a tolerance towards the original strain.

A post in Berri, in the Riverland, beckons and Snr Sgt Boylan will remember his time in Roxby Downs fondly.

He and wife Denise came to Roxby Downs in May 2012, moving at an “interesting” stage of the town’s history.

“We came here several months prior to the first Lizards Revenge protest,” he said.

“I applied for the job because at that time, there was an expansion underway which was going to make Roxby Downs the ‘centre of the known world’ in terms of mining.

“That didn’t quite pan out how we thought it would – but we were talking about a range of things that was going to significantly increase the population base of Roxby Downs.”

While he is a familiar face around town in his police uniform, Roxby Downs locals may also recognise his voice from local station RoxFM. “I’ve been involved quite heavily with the radio station for a while now,” Snr Sgt Boylan said.

“I’d never had any involvement with community radio before and prior to coming here I thought it was a rather funny thing and I wondered whoever listened to it, because everywhere else I’d been had large commercial stations.

“But now I see that RoxFM is a truly local station and having got involved in it, it’s a quirky little asset to the community.”

The current chairperson of the RoxFM Board, Snr Sgt Boylan is also on ‘The Man Cave’ every Saturday morning and previously also ran a show with Denise. He urged anyone with an interest in radio or music to get involved in the local station.

“Anybody here who likes music, I would suggest that they come and have a go because it is not that hard to be on the radio,” he said.

“It’s community radio so if you don’t like what’s being played, you can do something about it. You don’t get that in other places.”

Concerns with liquor licencing issues on the town oval led Snr Sgt Boylan to become involved with the Roxby Downs Sport and Recreation Forum, of which he is the current chairperson.

“I was concerned about the direction the liquor licensing on the oval was headed because I didn’t feel that it was sustainable,” he said.

some key people like Tony Weir at Roxbylink who was wonderful in overseeing it, and the council, and I think that now we have a better arrangement than both existed at the time and was proposed to exist.”

More recently the forum’s attention turned to the Sport and Recreation Master Plan which Snr Sgt Boylan said gave the town “a good idea of what we could do, it’s a good vision for the future”.

He also paid tribute to Sport and Recreation Officer Rebecca Cooke, who worked tirelessly to improve outcomes for sporting organisations.

His role with the Sport and Recreation forum lead to a role with the Roxby Downs Community Board, and he has just resigned as Chairperson ahead of his move to the Riverland.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time with the Community Board because it’s come at an interesting time in the history of Roxby Downs - it’s been a really good time to be involved and see (Council Administrator) Geoff Whitbread’s vision for the future,” he said.

Going forward, Snr Sgt Boylan said he hoped the Board would continue to become a stronger voice for the community, especially to the Council’s Administrator and Chief Executive Officer once appointed.

With his community involvements often requiring out of hours work, Snr Sgt Boylan thanked his wife Denise for her “tremendous support”.

“One of the main reasons I’ve been able to get involved in these things is the tremendous support I’ve had from Denise – sometimes

I’m not sure if she wants me to get involved or just get out of the house, but either way she’s been a fantastic support!” he said.

From a work perspective, Snr Sgt has been involved in two major “Lizards” protest events, which had become “a well-oiled machine” from a planning and operational perspective.

“Protests are always a mix of allowing people’s democratic right to protest, while allowing other people’s democratic right to go about their business, and we’re often in the middle as police trying to balance it – and I think generally we get the mix right” he said.

“These events require large scale planning and are not without their challenges, but beforehand there is a lot of work done with BHP Billiton.”

The move to Berri will no doubt offer Snr Sgt Boylan some new and different challenges both on a work and personal level, which he looks forward to.

“Having moved numerous times, it’s always the adventure of a new place, it’s a fresh start, and particularly in an area you’ve never been before there’s a sense of exploring around the place,” he said.

“I am sad to be leaving Roxby because I’ve really enjoyed my time here, but this is a new opportunity and I hope that people will look back and think ‘Terry Boylan, he wasn’t bad, he did a pretty good job’.”

Recruitment to replace Snr Sgt Boylan at Roxby Downs Police is currently underway.

hef and Channel 7 presenter Callum Hann will headline the Roxby Downs Happy Healthy Expo on April 1.

Sprout co-founders - dietitian Themis Chyrssidis and chef and Channel 7 presenter Callum Hann - will headline the Roxby Downs Happy Healthy Expo on 1 April.

Co-founder of Sprout cooking school in Adelaide, Mr Hann is also known as runner up of the 2010 series of MasterChef and winner of MasterChef All Stars in 2012.

Passionate dietitian Themis Chryssidis, who co-founded Sprout with Mr Hann in 2011, will also make the trip for the expo to complement the cooking demonstrations, stalls and other activities to take place in the day.

“There is going to be a lot happening which is going to be really good,” said Roxbylink Community Services Officer Trainee Ines Badman.

“We are excited to have Callum Hann coming up to show us some recipes and teach us how to cook properly.

“It is really exciting to have someone so famous coming up to a small town like Roxby Downs.”

The Happy Healthy Expo is a family-friendly event with temporary tattoos, face painting and games throughout the day for the children.

The Embrace movie, which focusses on women’s mental health and body positivity, will also be screened in the Roxbylink Library as part of the event.

“We ran this event back in 2014 and it went really well from what I understand, so we are hoping for a similar result this year,” Ines said.

She said BHP Billiton were a big supporter of the Happy Healthy Expo and without them the event would not have been able to go ahead.

The expo will be held on Saturday, April 1, between 9am and 1pm at the Community Youth Centre, Roxbylink Carpark and small oval.

You might be surprised to read in this edition that we have stopped home deliveries of The Monitor in Roxby Downs.

It wasn’t an easy decision to make, as we know many of our readers eagerly keep an eye out for their copy of the paper in their driveway each Wednesday afternoon.

However, unfortunately a number of our papers would remain uncollected – or get blown around by the wind – and end up laying around town each week.

Our papers have been delivered by local sporting groups for a number of years (lately Olympic Dam Sporting Club and previously the Roxby Miners) and they have always tried to minimise the problem, but it was difficult to manage.

Copies of The Monitor in the streets caused a litter issue and we have been lobbied by a number

of concerned groups and individuals for quite a while to do something about it.

So from this week, we’ve stopped home deliveries and The Monitor can now be collected from a number of local businesses and collection points (see story on page three) around Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam. We haven’t made any other changes to the way our neighbouring towns of Pimba, Woomera and Andamooka, and those further afield, receive their copies each week.

We’ve already been overwhelmed by the number of positive responses to our decision, which reinforces that we’ve made the right choice - it seems many of our readers have also been concerned about the environmental impact our delivery service was causing.

Praise and the Growth Mindset Does the way we praise our children affect the way they see themselves as learners? Does it affect their level of intellect or talent?

In her book ‘Mindset’ Dr Carol Dweck explains that after experiments with hundreds of children, the evidence strongly demonstrates that ‘praising children’s intelligence harms their motivation and it harms their performance’.

Parents and teachers can encourage growth mindsets in children by shifting their praise to encouraging the process, rather than the end result. Process praise sounds like “I love the way you persisted with that task and didn’t give up” as opposed to “you’re a really good artist” or “you must be really smart”.

Supporting children with honest feedback through their failures encourages resilience and persistence. Take the time to explain that failing doesn’t make them a failure.

Dweck explains that “we can praise them as much as we want for their growth-oriented process – what they accomplished through practice, study, persistence and good strategies. And we can ask them about their work in a way that admires and appreciates their efforts and choices”.

Does this make them praise-dependent?

According to raisingchildren.net.au “…children who are criticised all the time are more likely to seek approval to feel good.” Avoid praising speed or perfection - the enemies of difficult learning.

This leads to ideas like “if you think I’m smart when I’m fast and perfect, I’d better not take on anything challenging.”

Dweck believes that parents try to hand their children permanent confidence by praising their talent and intelligence. This backfires, making children doubt themselves as soon as they fail.

“If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort and keep on learning. That way their children don’t have to be the slaves of praise.

They will have a lifelong way to build and repair their own confidence.”

TEAM based learning has gone off with a bang at St Barbara’s Parish School this year, with students taking to the program with great enthusiasm.

An adaptation of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education program, STEAM adds the arts to create a project-based, collaborative learning environment.

Stanford said the students had thoroughly enjoyed the new program and thrived under the new format, coming up with solutions to problems themselves.

“Parents have been coming up to me saying ‘this is amazing, keep doing it’ and the kids want to do it,” Ms Stanford said.

“The bigger kids are getting really good at finding ways to getting to solutions.

“It is cool to see the thinking process that goes on and how certain kids get to particular answers.

“Students are not just kids, they are peo-

ple too and we are helping them to think and come up with ideas themselves so they are ready for after school life when they get there.”

St Barbara’s Principal Bernadette Lacey said it was great having someone as enthusiastic as Ms Stanford in charge of the new program, and she was doing a fantastic job.

The students also had positive things to say about the program.

“I love that STEAM is a mixture of five different subjects, we get to be the investigators and find creative solutions,” said year three/ four student Evie.

“I love that we get to be creative and make things, and that there’s no right or wrong. We have been learning about organelles and this week we made cell models out of lollies, showcasing our understanding of their structure,” said middle school student Lucy.

The classes this term have looked at the living world, enabling students to look at and solve real life problems.

Later this semester students will showcase their learning through a nature walk and fermented food café exhibition.

Nominations open Forum celebrates Harmony Day H for volunteer recognition armony Day is held every year on March 21 to coincide with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

oxby Downs locals are urged to nominate volunteers who make a difference.

Organisations and community groups are encouraged to nominate an outstanding volunteer to receive a Premier’s Certificate of Recognition for their contribution to the community.

In 2016, two Roxby Downs residents - Deb Price and Vicki Mason were honoured with this award.

South Australia has a strong tradition of vol-

unteering, with more than 920,000 volunteers contributing an estimated 1.76 million hours each week. We know that Roxby Downs is a big contributor to these statistics as a report in 2012 showed with 47 per cent of local respondents saying they had volunteered. This is what makes Roxby such

a great place!

To be eligible for nomination, volunteers must have made a significant contribution to the community, demonstrating leadership and an ongoing commitment to volunteering.

Nominate an individual, or a group, and let them know what a difference they make to their community. Nomination forms available on the Office for Volunteers’ website at www.of v. sa.gov.au. Submissions close on Friday 7 April 2017.

The theme for Harmony Day 2017 is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It’s a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.

Harmony Day is an annual event that celebrates our rich cultural diversity, it’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The day aims to engage people to

participate in their community and respect cultural and religious diversity.

In Roxby Downs, we will be celebrating with a short film festival and light supper catered by the Roxby Downs Multicultural Forum. The event will take place on Wednesday March 22 at 6.30pm in the Roxbylink cinema.

The Colourfest short films will run for one hour and will show-

case the success, challenges and nuances of migrant communities in Australia and the world.

The films are a great way to share and celebrate the cultures we have in Roxby Downs. With over 40 nationalities in our community, we are unique and diverse and simply worth celebrating!

Tourist season begins

T

he Olympic Dam Discovery Tour is a must for any visitor to Roxby Downs.

“I think even locals or residents would discover something new on the tour,” said Visitor Information Officer at the Roxby Downs Visitor Information Centre (VIC), Cassie Weir, .

The first tour for the 2017 season will start on Wednesday March 15 and kicks off at 9am at the Roxby Downs VIC. Tours will continue every Wednesday until the end of October.

Tickets are $25 for Adults, $20 for Concession Card holders and children under 12 are free (must be over four years old). The discovery tour includes a surface mine tour of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam operation, a visit to the Arid Recovery Reserve and a video presentation in the Roxbylink Cinema.

Participants also receive a page of discount vouchers for local businesses in and around Roxby Downs.

The Olympic Dam Discovery Tour began in July 2015 as a joint venture between BHP Billiton and Arid Recovery.

Since then the extended tour has proved popular with visitors and has helped to boost awareness of Arid Recovery, with visitors often tempted back to visit the reserve for a sunset tour.

A

number of Roxby Downs motorbike enthusiasts are currently training for the Finke Desert Race, being held in central Australia on the June long weekend.

The Monitor journalist Patrick Glover spoke to four riders to find out how they’re preparing for the event.

Irlam can’t get enough

T

here is a saying that once Finke is in your blood you just keep coming back and this is the case for Rohan Irlam.

Irlam will be competing in his fifth Finke Desert Race this year and hopes to complete the event for the fourth time after previously finishing three out of four races so far.

“There is nothing like crossing the finishing line knowing you have conquered the desert,” he told The Monitor.

“You get to see some of the most amazing camp sites along the track and everyone there is willing to help everyone out.

“It’s true what they say, once it’s in your blood you keep coming back, the atmosphere and the Finke hype is so worth it and the build-up makes it all that much better.”

Irlam is undergoing an extensive training regime on and off the bike which sees him riding on a regular basis in various places all across South Australia.

He said he’s supported by an “awesome” team made up of family and friends who love Finke just as much as he does and are there for him at the “drop of a hat”.

Irlam said his goal for this year’s race is to not only finish but make inside the top 150 mark.

ocal Sean Caputo will live out a childhood dream when he takes part in the Finke Desert Race.

“This is just something I’ve always wanted to do ever since I was a kid,” he said.

“I have never competed in something this big before, but I am really looking forward to the atmosphere and intensity of the whole race, being there and seeing people riding.”

The two day event is classified as one of the toughest off road races in one of the remotest places in the world.

Caputo said he was well aware of Finke’s reputation and has been preparing to make sure he is ready for the challenge.

“I ride my motor bike every day, if I can, and I ride 15 kilometres on a push bike pretty much every day as well, again if it’s possible,” he said.

Caputo will be entering the class two event which is the 251-451cc category.

Time is right for Dixon

L

ocal Tim Dixon is hoping some inside knowledge of the track will give him the upper hand at the upcoming Finke Desert Race.

Dixon has been pre-running the track for a number of years with his brother in-law and close friend, and felt now was the right time to put his name forward for the event.

“My reasons behind entering this mad race escapes me sometimes, I sometimes ask myself the same question (why he’s entering),” he told The Monitor.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a number of years now. I suppose age has a lot to do with it, I’m at the stage in my life when it just feels the right time to do it.

“I’m not getting any younger, if I don’t do it now, then I never will. Plus it’s a great reason to get some fitness and weight loss going.”

Dixon said he was looking forward to competing in what he described as a “unique race” and the “only one of its kind” because it gave him the chance to compete in the same event on the same track as some of his racing heroes.

He said that alone made it “special”.

Dixon will be entering in class eight, the 45 and over category, on his KTM 450 and knows he has a lot of training ahead of him.

“We try and do a couple of trips up to Alice

“This entails a three to four day trip north, spending time riding the track from Alice to Finke a few times.

“My fitness training involves daily time spent on the rowing machine and push bike and light weight sessions.

“When the weather is kinder, time out on the motorbike is just as important. Plenty of tracks and sand about to get some good bike fitness.”

Improvement the goal for Kirkwood

heading back for a second go in 2017.

Kirkwood’s goal for this year is simple – improve on 2015’s performance and finish the race to collect another survivor’s spike.

He is set to undergo a rigorous training regime – with a combination of riding, gym, running and football – having only taken up riding in 2009.

“I never really had an interest in bikes,” Kirkwood said.

“I went on a camping trip in 2009 and rode an old XR250 and a month later bought my first bike.

“Didn’t really know what I was doing but was keen to learn. I’m still not really 100% sure what I’m doing.”

Kirkwood is hoping to give the race a good crack in 2017 in the class five category, 251450cc.

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program works together with local sporting clubs to build a healthier sporting nation.

Good Sports clubs are well-prepared to tackle a number of health issues by establishing a smoke free environment, applying safe transport practices and managing alcohol responsibly within the club.

Club President Travis Brougham said their involvement in Good Sports has been a good learning curve and the club is now more confident they are taking the right steps to be a safer sporting club.

“Running a club is more than sport. We want to provide a safe and healthy environment and influence the safety and well-being of our community,” Brougham said.

“Getting involved in the Good Sports program has been an easy process and our club feels it is in a stronger position now we have a number of new policies in place.”

SA Good Sports State Manager, Margie Fahy said alcohol is a leading cause of preventable illness and death in Australia, and breaking the link between alcohol and sport has never been more important.

“By achieving the top level of Good Sports, Hornridge Sporting Club is showing they understand the enormous influence they have, especially on junior members, and are ensuring they make a positive impact,” Fahy said.

T

his weekend of Roxby cricket action saw two blockbuster games that would all but determine the final standings, with one round to go before finals.

Roxby Miners 6/186 def Olympic Dam 71

In the first game on Friday night the Roxby Miners faced reigning premiers Olympic Dam (OD).

OD had a point to prove after being knocked off in an upset in the T20 final a fortnight ago by Hornridge.

This was the first grand final loss by OD in quite some time and provides a real confidence boost for the three other teams all gunning for a premiership.

Roxby skipper Mick Nelson won an important toss and elected to bat, with a strong line up boosted by the return of Rhys Allard, Sean McIvor and Sean Connor.

OD were also missing a few key players and looked a bit light on paper.

Jon Sieburn (30) and Paul Trotta (13) started strong until Trotta mistimed a lofted drive off Geraghty (1/21).

This brought all round sportsman Jared Greenbank (53) to the crease and spinner Ben Vandeleur was soon introduced.

The plan half worked until Greenbank was dropped on the boundary by Geraghty, which would prove a costly mistake as the Miners batter grew in confidence and looked to make OD pay for the error.

From there Lucas Holbrook (2/26), Nicholas Howard (2/37) and Robert Rayner (1/55) all toiled hard to reduce the flow of runs but Roxby put away the bad balls which came each over.

McIvor (40) was important at the back end of the Miners innings, along with the dangerous Allard (24).

The total of 186 was a strong total and would take something special from the Devils.

Glover (6) and Nichols (2) had to be checked for cuts as they struggled early against the very sharp McIvor and the consistency of Greenbank, with runs hard to come by.

The pressure built with both openers removed cheaply. A wounded Seb Holbrook (9) misjudged an Allard lolly and OD was in big trouble.

Andrew Ho (20) showed something but when Lucas Holbrook holed out on 13, OD went on to lose 7/17 with Allard the destroyer with 5/24.

Nelson 3/30 was his usual consistent self.

This puts the Miners a game clear on top of the ladder with a game to go and unless something goes pear-shaped they should enjoy a week off and go through to the grand final on March 18.

OD are now left with some work to do if they are going to defend their 2016 40 over title.

East Roxby 8/114 def Hornridge 110

The second game saw Hornridge take on East Roxby in another important clash, with the winner looking to secure third spot and the loser missing out on a finals berth.

Hornridge would have been fancied against East Roxby after their recent success, but it was not to be.

Yet another game was affected by the sprinklers being left on, an issue which really has to get sorted, with the match reduced to 30 overs a side.

The experienced pair of Clint Gow-Smith (13) and Adam Malm (6) opened up before

the latter was caught by Praveen De Silva off the bowling of Sachira Mutukumarana (1/19).

Raj Jo Mani was run out shortly after but skipper Jamie Way (42) continued his great vein of form combing with Gow-Smith for a 57 run stand.

Chamila Rathnajake (2/19) was at his best, along with De Silva (2/24) but Keegan Blows (2/9) was the match winner off his six overs.

In a 30 over match 110 would be a tricky total to chase down but the East Roxby outfit were up to the task.

It was a shaky start for East Roxby as Rathnajake (2), Ush (0) and Mutkukumarana (6) all fell cheaply, with Jeremy Oldfield (3/27) doing the hard yards for the Wanderers.

It was the middle order of East Roxby who stood tall with De Silva (38), Blows (20) and Williamson (30) putting their side in a winning position.

Michael Hammerling was economical as always with 1/14 and Kavanagh did his bit with 2/15.

In the end it just wasn’t enough runs and East Roxby moved a game clear of Hornridge with one round to go.

The big thing to take away from these games - and the whole season for that matter - is it’s not how many plays, it’s who plays for their respective teams.

Each team has some aces up their sleeves and from here we will have to wait and see how the cards are dealt.

OD needs a win and need to hope East Roxby can upset the Miners to be a chance of snatching top spot. If the Miners win they are through.

Hornridge would be rooting for the Miners best next week as well as needing to topple OD to stay in the hunt.

You can’t say it’s not interesting.

West Adelaide to play trial match in Roxby CONTINUED FROM BACK PAGE The match will be an internal trial for the club’s under-18 side, and WAFC Centre of Excellence Manager Jason Porplyzia said the side was really looking forward to the trip.

“They are super excited to head up and the trip will help serve a couple of purposes,” Porplyzia told The Monitor.

“It will allow the team to spend more time as a group, get to know each other a little better and bond, as well as giving them their first chance to show themselves in a game of footy.

“The first game after pre-season is always exciting and is a real chance for them to strut their stuff, even if it is an internal trial.

“It is still a good chance for the players to show what they can do and work towards getting a crack in the side for round one.”

He said the trial match should provide a good spectacle for locals and hoped to see as many supporters there as possible.

WAFC Football Manager Andrew Marks said he and Porplyzia had made many trips with senior players to the community in the past, but bringing the under-18 side this time around would be highly beneficial.

“It’ll be big having the under-18’s there,” he said.

“In the past Jason and I have visited but having the under-18s with us this time will give the guys up here a chance to see how close they are to getting into to a side like that down at West Adelaide.”

Roxby Downs Junior Football Association Junior Development Co-ordinator Rein Geraghty said Roxby Downs and the WAFC had developed a strong relationship over the past six years, and it was exciting to see such an outcome.

“It is the first time Roxby will get to see

SANFL being played locally and it will show the level that some of the junior lads can aspire to and give them a bit of an idea of where they need to be,” Geraghty said.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the West Adelaide Football Club and the work and support they have given us, especially this year.”

The community will have a chance to be fully involved with the players and coaching staff with WAFC to run a coaching clinic and sausage sizzle on the Sunday morning.

Porplyzia will also put the Roxby Downs West Adelaide Academy squad through their paces during a special training session before the Saturday night trial.

Geraghty thanked BHP Billiton for their support and donations, without which the game would not have been possible.

The trial match kicks off at 7pm on Saturday, March 11 at the Roxby Downs Town Oval.
