A

n enthusiastic crew of Roxby Downs Scouts members took to the streets last Wednesday for a pre-Clean Up Australia Day effort.

While the scouts have traditionally been a strong part of Roxby Downs’ Clean Up Australia Day each year, this year many of them were away at a camp in Roonka, on the Murray River, and so completed their clean-up early.

Fourteen cubs cleaned up an area between Eremophila Street and Pine Crescent, collecting one-and-a-half bags of rubbish.

more flexible approach may be taken to future Clean Up Australia Day events, after lower than expected participants in Roxby Downs at the weekend.

While disappointed that only one person came along to support the event on Sunday morning, Roxby Council Community Projects Officer (Environment) Anni Giles said a number of Roxby Downs Scouts took to the streets on Wednesday afternoon.

“The Scouts have always been a big supporter of Clean Up Australia Day and this year, because many of them were going away on camp, they did their clean up during the week,” Mrs Giles said.

“I believe about 20 of them helped out which is great to hear.”

With the Scouts away and other community and sporting events also scheduled for Sunday morning, Mrs Giles said it was not surprising that the turn-out was so small for the weekend’s clean up.

“Last year I think we had around 25 people on the Sunday, I wasn’t expecting quite that many this year because of other events on and the warm weather,” she said.

“It was disappointing, but perhaps we need to look at other ways of doing it (in the future).”

Mrs Giles said Clean Up Australia Day was actually quite flexible and did not require hours of participants’ time – and they don’t even have to attend an official town event.

“Clean Up Australia Day can be done at your own leisure, you can actually do it at any time,” she explained.

“For example, you could do a clean-up of just your own street, which might only take 15 minutes or so.

“If you register beforehand, Council can get all the gear to you and the rubbish can just be taken to the Resource Recovery Centre afterwards.

“And of course you also don’t have to wait for Clean Up Australia Day each year to clean up – if you walk past a piece of litter, just pick it up and put it in the bin.”

Mrs Giles said she and community volunteer Ramya Sashigunan collected rubbish between the Roxby Downs Police Station and bowls club on Sunday, with disposable food packaging making up the majority of rubbish collected.

“Last year we collected lots of ten cent refundable drink containers, but this year it was mostly packaging from chips and chocolate bars, as well as lots of the silver seals from drink bottles,” she said.

“It might be a timely reminder for parents that if you are packing food for your children, try to go for a ‘nude food’ approach and eliminate packaging if you can – this can be done by buying in bulk and putting food in reusable containers.”

Mrs Giles thanked both the Roxby Scouts and Ms Sashigunan for their efforts in cleaning up Roxby Downs over the last week.

22-year-old woman from Roxby Downs breached the conditions of her provisional licence (‘P plates’) after returning a positive breath analysis.

She was stopped in Richardson Place on Tuesday, 28 February and provided a breath analysis of .053 at the time.

Drink driving

22-year-old male was reported for driving under the influence and driving while disqualified last Tuesday.

He was stopped near the Olympic Dam Village, his place of residence, and after returning a breath analysis of .153 received a six-month instant loss of licence, to be served on the completion of his existing disqualification

Serious criminal trespass, theft

22-year-old Roxby Downs male was reported for serious criminal trespass and theft after his residence was searched by Roxby Downs Police on Thursday, 2 March.

Police were following enquiries relating to an incident in October last year, and found property relating to the offence at the man’s house.

He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

Driving disqualified

A

20-year-old Roxby Downs man’s vehicle was impounded after he was caught driving while disqualified last Thursday.

He was stopped in the Roxby Down Club carpark because his vehicle’s headlights were not working, and after being reported for driving while disqualified his vehicle was impounded for 28 days. He will also receive a summons to appear in court at a later date.

Whooping Soccer match on hold cough warning WRITTEN BY AMANDA HUDSON

T

here won’t be a high-level soccer match in Roxby Downs this year, although the door has been left open to the event returning in the future.

A

spike in whooping cough cases has prompted an urgent warning to pregnant women – and anyone planning to visit a newborn – to make sure they are vaccinated against the disease.

Since January 2016, there have been 24 cases of whooping cough in babies aged less than six months in South Australia.

Of these cases, more than half of the mothers had not received the vaccine.

With the high numbers of pregnant women and young children in Roxby Downs, local doctor Simon Lockwood and his staff are echoing the government’s call to vaccinate.

“Doctor Lockwood and his staff fully support and highly recommend the whooping cough vaccine for pregnant women,” said Roxby Downs Family Practice registered nurse, Bonnie Harman (pictured left).

“Whooping cough (Pertussis) is a highly contagious serious illness causing bouts of coughing, breathing difficulties and other serious complications including death.”

Pregnant women are urged to get the whooping cough vaccine to protect their newborn babies, while children should also be vaccinated at six weeks, four months and six months, as well as boosters at four years of age and in high school.

“Having this vaccine during pregnancy is safe and effective for mums and bubs, helping protect newborns during their first months of life when they are most vulnerable to serious infections,”

A partnership between Roxby Council and the Football Federation of South Australia (FFSA), designed to raise the profile of soccer and build an interest in the sport locally, saw an FFSA league match played in Roxby Downs each year from 2014-16.

“The original contract with FFSA was for a three year term, which has now come to its completion,” a Roxby Council spokesperson said.

small chemical spill in the Roxby Downs Medical Centre caused its closure for most of Tuesday, February 28.

“There was a total of 99 junior players registered for the 2016 season as opposed to approximately 20 players four years ago. Numbers are expected to increase even further for the 2017 season.”

Roxby Council will continue to support a wide range of sports in the community through the services provided at Roxbylink, the STARCLUB Field Officer/ Sport and Recreation Officer, and its support of the Sport and Recreation Forum.

And while the FFSA league regional round match won’t be visiting Roxby Downs in the immediate future, there may be an opportunity to return the event at a later date.

“There is no reason why we would not reconsider similar events in the future,” the council spokesperson added.

Although having held the match for the past three years, Roxby Downs will not host the event in 2017 - although Roxby Council says the door has been left open for a possible return in the future.

No-one was harmed as a result of the spill with the Roxby Downs Country Fire Service (CFS) attending the scene and quickly bringing the situation under control, cornering off the protected area and evacuating everyone from the building.

Hazmat equipment had to be brought up from Port Augusta and upon arrival the spill was removed and the doctors surgery re-opened.

It is understood the spill occurred as a result of a minor fault in a piece of medical equipment.

A

fter stepping down 12 months ago as deputy of the Roxby Downs Business Forum, Sandy Sumsion has returned to the group, this time as its chairperson.

As one of the co-founders of the group when it was restarted five years ago, Mrs Sumsion previously spent four years in the deputy chairperson role, and feels that now is the right time to make a return to try and do something about her frustration towards Roxby Downs’ current business climate.

“It is a pretty good feeling to be back, I am a little excited,” Mrs Sumsion said.

“We’ve only had one meeting at this stage where we talked about what we want to get out of this year.

“But I am still really pleased to see the kinds of people that are still on the forum.”

She said the main focusses for the forum in 2017 were a revision of the terms of references, defining what the group was actually about and what their main role was, and setting objectives for the year.

“It will be easy to gauge as the year goes on, but we just need a measuring stick in regards to what we achieve and what we want to achieve moving forward,” Mrs Sumsion said.

The Roxby Downs Business Awards was always been a big event on the forum’s calendar in the past,

but had not been run in the past two years.

Mrs Sumsion said there was still no guarantee if the awards would return in 2017.

“The business awards will only come back if it is one of our objectives to hold one, it has to be something forum wants to have,” she said.

“There is a small group getting together before the next meeting to see if it is something that people want.

“There are so many different businesses in town it is hard to know what (they) all want.

“But we will be focussing on things I know are important to every business in town, not just a select few.”

Donations came from the Roxby Downs community as well as personal donations from Ines and her family which they delivered while on a cruise for a recent holiday.

Ms Badman said it was surprising how much they had received in the past two years - with another 24kg worth of equipment making their most recent trip – but was extremely grateful.

“We were going over anyway and the kids over there don’t get what we get, which is sad

to see,” she said.

“You see kids with books, pencils, pens, stuff we take for granted, and you see how much of a difference that makes, it means their whole school year is going to be completely different.

“It makes me really happy, it puts a smile on my face to see them happy and to know that we may have done something that may have changed their life, even in a small way.”

Ms Badman said some of the items were also donated to staff on the ship, who had been away from their families for extended periods of time.

Donations included books, stationery and toys.

New approach for 2017/18 council budget

oxby Council will take a different approach to how it produces its budget this year, with a number of minor changes set to improve the process.

While work is already underway on the next financial year’s budget, the process will take longer than usual with newly-appointed Administrator Geoff Whitbread wanting to make sure managers from all areas have input.

“The reason we are doing that is because it involves more people in the process, and people have responsibility over their areas,” Mr Whitbread said.

“It also gives management a closer look at the budget.”

He said the budget would also be released in the same financial year as it is intended for rather than afterwards, as has been done in the past.

A draft budget is expected to be completed by April 24 with BHP Billiton and the State Government to look over it from there.

Mr Whitbread said the final budget should be completed around July 17.

In another positive, he said having a new finance manager, Drew Ellis, would give a different perspective on the budget this year.

Mr Whitbread said he expects a straight-forward budget this year, one with “no frills”.

Auxiliary on the hunt for new members

ith the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Roxby Downs Auxiliary Annual General Meeting set to be held next Tuesday, the current committee is calling for new members to sign up.

Auxiliary member Kate Petty said it was vital new members signed on to keep “one of the most valued and treasured services to our remote town” alive.

“An accident/illness can happen in the blink of an eye – the RFDS is basically a lifeline to specialised medical care,” Mrs Petty said.

“I continually think about what if it was my own children/husband or even myself that required that service.

“So I think any contribution to fundraise to keep the “flying doctor flying” is very worthy.”

She said she joined the auxiliary because she had a strong desire to give back to the Roxby Downs community, but there were a number of other members signed on to give back after they or someone they knew re-

quired the RFDS. Sue Davies, another committee member, required the RFDS 11 years ago after experiencing bleeding on the brain from an aneurism, and said she wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the service.

“The RFDS is very important when you live in a remote town and you don’t realise how important until you need their assistance,” Mrs Davies said.

Meanwhile, Deb Price has been on the committee for a number of years and also has the RFDS to thank for helping her in a time of need.

“Without this service our now 12 year old grand-daughter would definitely not be here today,” she said.

“Living in a remote town such as Roxby Downs and Woomera, this 24-hour service is a crucial fact of life.

“This service is vital and relies on the support of local volunteers.”

Erilee and Merv Rogers also make up part of the committee and have been doing so for around 20 years – and were recently recognised for their efforts.

Mr Rogers plays a big part in the RFDS golf days held in Roxby Downs, which he said he was more than happy to do.

“Time doesn’t cost anything, but time is worth a lot,” he said.

RFDS Central Operations Volunteer Coordinator, Debbie Adams, said the Roxby Downs community have been strong supporters of the RFDS, raising awareness of the work the RFDS does as well as fundraising to help keep the service in the air.

“Volunteering is a rewarding and at times a fun experience and the door is always open to new members of the RFDS Roxby Downs Auxiliary,” Mrs Adams said.

“We have 24 support groups and auxiliaries in South Australia and Alice Springs who help to raise awareness of the RFDS in their community and who run fundraising events from sausage sizzles, to the annual RFDS Badge Day, and the gold day.

“Collectively, our groups raise more than $800,000 a year for the RFDS which goes back into aircraft and medical equipment replacement.”

Over the past 12 months the local auxiliary

has raised $7,000 alone from donation tins at local businesses.

“On behalf of the Roxby Downs RFDS Auxiliary we would like to thank those in the community that have made a contribution to the money tins that have been placed around town and surrounding areas,” Mrs Petty said.

“Without your valuable contributions we wouldn’t be able keep the Royal Flying Doctor flying.”

The RFDS Roxby Downs Auxiliary AGM will be held next Tuesday at 7.30pm at the Roxby Downs Club in the upstairs meeting room.

oxby Downs Area School (RDAS) announced its 2017 school and house captains, along with vice captains, last week in front of fellow classmates and parents.

RDAS Principal Steve Bennett said he and the rest of the school community were extremely proud of those selected into the roles.

The house leaders were elected by their peers, while the school leaders were elected by school staff members.

Mr Bennett said the junior, middle

and senior school leaders had each gone through a rigorous application and selection process run by the school leadership team and he was satisfied they had selected the right applicants for the roles.

“We wanted to ensure we had students who would aspire to uphold the school values,” he said.

“Students selected to these roles will have the responsibility of being positive role models for their peers and will work on various committees across the school to provide a student’s perspective.

Students warming up for WASSAC

U

p to 400 students from regional South Australia will soon arrive in Roxby Downs for the Western Areas Secondary S cho ol Athle tic s C ar niv al (WASSAC).

An annual event, the carnival was last held locally in 2012 and will include year eight to 12 students from schools in Port Lincoln, Roxby Downs, Port Augusta and Whyalla, as well as a combined far west team.

Students will compete against each other to qualify for State titles being

held at SANTOS Stadium in Adelaide later this year.

Final preparations are now underway for what Roxby Downs Area School WASSAC coordinator Daniel McGuire says will be a great day.

“There will be between three to four hundred students and teachers, so it will be huge,” Mr McGuire said.

“It begins at 8am and will run through until 1pm, when we’ll finish with presentations in the rec (recreation centre).”

yre house took out Roxby Downs Area School’s senior swimming carnival last week with a convincing win at the Roxby Downs swimming pool.

Eyre dominated to finish with 504 points, while Gairdner finished second with 337 points.

Frome house was third, collecting 212 points for the day, followed by Torrens (178 points.)

W

hile the Andamooka Yacht Club (AYC) is currently known for its coffees, smoothies and cakes, it will soon add another attraction and begin music classes.

AYC co-owner Pip Stafford is set to begin music classes for six month to four-year-old children held on Tuesday mornings from 9.30am until 10am.

Ms Stafford said she would be looking to introduce children to the basics of music; rhythm, singing and dancing.

After initially studying a Bachelor in Early Childhood Studies and Primary Teaching, Ms Stafford worked in a preschool for three years before her travel adventures led her to the AYC. Now she is keen to use those skills again through the local music classes.

“I have had heaps of experience with these age groups, I just love working with these groups of kids - I have so

much fun,” Ms Stafford said.

“I really wanted to do something for the kids out here and continue with this kind of stuff as well as running the café.”

She said so far there had been a really positive response to the classes and was keen to get started, although a start date is yet to be set.

“It is just another option, an educational option,” Ms Stafford said.

“If there is enough support I am happy to do another class on another day but we will see how many people we get to the first few classes.”

The classes are $10 per family which includes the half an hour class as well as a free babycino afterwards.

Parents are encouraged to stay during the classes to help and learn with their child.

Owen’s new job too hard to pass up

A

ndamooka Primar y School’s latest staff member Owen Lamb is used to slightly colder climates, having started his teaching career in England.

L

ocals will soon be able to take the taste of Andamooka home with them as the Andamooka Primary School and Children’s Centre parent’s group prepares a cookbook to raise funds for future projects.

But Mr Lamb (pictured right) said his new position as Andamooka was “an amazing opportunity” and one that he couldn’t pass up.

“A majority of the time I will be teaching science along with history, geography, design and technology,” he said.

“It is all the subjects I love teaching to the age group that is my favourite to teach as well.

“I really enjoy teaching here, the classes are brilliant.”

Having spent the first eight years of his teaching career in England, Mr Lamb made the move to Australia where he spent two years relief teaching in the southern suburbs before he won a permanent position in a northern suburbs school.

But when the Andamooka position came up he had no hesitation in taking it.

He said he was hoping to bring his passion for science to the school and continue the school’s already healthy love for the subject.

Parents’ group passes on the flavours of Andamooka

Work has begun on the cookbook, which will consist of recipes that have special meaning to parent group members.

“It is going to be all about the flavours of Andamooka, bringing out that heritage from the town,” said group co-ordinator Silvie O’Connor.

“There are a lot of unique people that live here and a lot of history, so we are hoping to come up with some recipes from the old days that reflect that heritage.

“We want to make something we can pass on from generation to generation – currently there are three generations in town so it is more about giving something to the children to hold on to and use to remember the history of the town.”

Mrs O’Connor said the group was in the initial stages of designing the cookbook including collecting the recipes, cooking them and taking photos of the food to go in the final product.

Each of the recipes will come with an explanation as to why it is so significant, while the photos of the food will be taken with an iconic Andamooka back drop such as Lake Torrens or the Heritage Cottages.

Once the cookbook is completed it is set to be sold in places like the Andamooka IGA and post office, as well as the Roxby Downs Visitor Information Centre.

Mrs O’Connor said the parent’s group was a very cohesive one and acted as a great support network to each other.

She said it had many purposes including acting a support group, social gathering and even holding the occasional class where parents were able to learn new skills.

The parent’s group meets at Andamooka Primary School and Children’s Centre from 9.30am until 11.30am every Friday, with all welcome.

Time to get happy and get healthy in 2017 T he Roxby Downs Happy Healthy Expo is on again this year and as always some great surprises have been planned.

The Happy Healthy Expo encompasses body, mind, spirit, soul and community safety and will be held in the Roxby Downs Community Youth Centre, rear carpark, small oval and pool area from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, 1 April.

To celebrate the expo, there will be loads of action, including stalls with health information and health checks, healthy food samples, character costumes, demonstrations from local sports clubs, activities for the family, give-aways, the Healthy Trail, and coming

There will also be a mock car crash demonstration by local emergency services which will be an interesting and thought provoking scene.

The movie ‘Embrace’ will be screening throughout the morning in the Roxbylink Library meeting space. Children will have lots of action at the expo with balloons, face painting, interactive activities and more.

Tragically, two children (one in Queensland and one in Victoria) have died from swallowing them.

Button batteries, once swallowed, can cause serious damage in less than two hours. These batteries are common and can be found around the home in ordinary small electrical items like TV remote controls, calculators and digital thermometers. Children under five years of age are most at risk.

Australian hospitals are seeing an average of 20 children per week suspected of swallowing button batteries.

The symptoms once swallowed are

he Olympic Dam Barbarians (ODB) are back again following a hugely successful 2016 season debut.

Becoming the first rugby league club of Roxby Downs, ODB made their presence known taking home the championship title for the Spencer Gulf Rugby League competition.

With round one 2017 fast approaching, the pre-season has the boys in full swing training under Jason Starkey and co-coaches Jacob Coles and Xavier Falemaka. Having lost a few key players going into the new season, the boys are proud to see many new faces on the field for 2017. Following on from last year’s success, the club is in for a challenge yet again going up against the Port Augusta Goannas, Whyalla Steelers and the newly established Port Pirie Pirates.

Round one kicks off on Saturday, April 1 with ODB promising to make the day a huge occasion here in Roxby Downs. The game will be held on the small oval with barbecue and drinks available for all spectators young and old.

Adding to the excitement of a new season, hopes are high for the club to present their first ever female rugby league team with the ladies’ training season also in full swing. Numbers are looking good to see them make their playing debut, going up against the mighty Port Augusta Goanna women.

Coming up soon is the first official function of the year that will be held on Saturday, March 18 at the Roxby Downs Golf Club, where ODB will be putting on a traditional New Zealand Hungi. Tickets start at $35pp with dinner, dessert and musical entertainment included. The event is open for all to come, club members and community alike.

hree local sporting groups have been awarded Active Club grants by the Office of Sport and Recreation.

Roxby Downs little athletics centre, junior basketball and senior basketball associations all received grants of more than $4,400 in the latest round of funding announced.

“It is exciting to see so many clubs recognised in this round of funding,” said Roxbylink Sport and Recreations Officer Beck Cooke.

“Half the other clubs that applied didn’t get any funding so it was great to have so many local groups apply.

“It is good to build a profile up here.”

Little athletics were awarded $4,486 which president Bec Nichols said would be put towards line marking and timing devices.

“It is definitely ex-

citing to receive this grant,” Nichols said.

“This is the second grant we have received but is the biggest fundraiser we’ve had yet so we are rapt.”

Senior basketball president Caleb Grohs said the association was thrilled to be awarded a grant worth $4500.

He said the money would be put towards balls and equipment with more to be decided on in future meetings. “ We a r e p ay i n g $4500, $5000 a year in affiliation fees so that is a big hit for a small association,” Grohs said.

“It is good to receive help like this.”

The Roxby Downs Junior Basketball Association also received $4500 and president Linda Evans said she had big plans for the grant.

New draw for new look FNFL

T

he Far North Football League (FNFL) released it 2017 draw last week, with the competition back to four teams for the first time in more than ten years.

Coober Pedy will be a noticeable exclusion from this year’s draw after a joint decision following the lack of support the club was receiving off the field on a local basis.

“Coober Pedy pulling out this season was a decision between the Coober Pedy Football club and the FNFL,” said FNFL president Travis Brougham.

“Last year they struggled with only a few committee members helping out and it takes more than two people to run a football club.

“We are working with the SANFL to help them rebuild their committee and come back strong in 2018.”

Despite the reduction in team numbers to four, the local clubs have voted to keep the finals format the same for the 2017 season.

This season’s fixtures will see a number of other changes with just the one round of Friday night games after trialing them for the first time last season.

“Last year was seen as a success but we are looking to improve further,” Brougham said.

“With low crowd attendances and very few volunteers last year, we are hoping moving all games to Saturday will create more of a “country footy feel” and hopefully get more people involved.

“There will still be one Friday night game for each age group, including seniors - that’s four out of 12 weeks which isn’t bad.”

There will be the introduction of some new rounds with one for Good Sports and Men’s Health while a father/son game will be held again, as well as a junior girls’ football match for the first time ever.

There will still be three league byes during the season, falling on the June long weekend for the Mortlock Shield,

July 15 and August 5 for the Roxby Downs Races.

The season will kick off on April 29 with Olympic Dam against Hornridge, followed by a rematch of last season’s grand final between Roxby Districts and East Roxby.

This game will be the ANZAC day clash with the player judged best on ground receiving the ANZAC Day medal.

Round two will see the only Friday night match for the season with a double header kicking off at 5pm as Hornridge take on East Roxby, followed by Olympic Dam and the Miners.

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Olympic Dam Football Club, with their special game coming on June 24 in round eight against Hornridge.

Meanwhile, the Mail Medal will be held on August 12 following the first round of finals, with the decider – the grand final – to take place on August 26.

n a critical game for both clubs, East Roxby came perilously close to upsetting the Roxby Miners in Friday night’s Roxby Districts Cricket Association clash at the town oval.

An East Roxby win would have locked in third place and sent Hornridge packing, while a Miners’ win would see them through to the RDCA grand final.

East Roxby batted first with a makeshift crew of batters and it was the tenacious Seb Griggs (19) and Sachira “Teddy” Muthukumurana (44) who started with quick runs

against Michael Nelson and Paul Trotta.

Teddy was on fire, hitting Trotta to all areas and taking 16 off one over, with East Roxby standing tall at 0/50 after 10 in the 30-over encounter.

Nelson (1/12), like a tough parent, took East Roxby’s Teddy away which swung momentum in the Miners’ favour, but runs kept flowing from Ryan Castellano (19) and Gareth Bryant (23).

The resilient Griggs was removed with the score at 100, as East Roxby kept the scoreboard ticking over, eventually creeping up to 155 with 24 sundries helping their cause.

The Miners were missing a few important players and it would take something special to reach the target.

Big game player Rhys Allard was sent in to open but was soon on his way back, with

Teddy finding his edge for no score with his second rock.

The pressure was on lefty Sean Connor (31), who was putting away the loose deliveries or anything wide. When he was removed, skipper Nelson took up the attack.

Nelson (34) pre-meditated some big hitting including four gigantic sixes to the short boundary off the bowling of Chad Nunn and Bryant, elevating the scoring rate and giving his team a chance.

When he mistimed another bomb, it looked like East Roxby might get home but evergreen veteran Paul Trotta (47*) had other plans as he and O’Hara (21*) with a 55 run stand saw their side over the line.

Muthukumurana (3/12) was outstanding for his team but needed more support with the bat and ball.

ornridge had their season to play for against reigning premiers Olympic Dam (OD), and to their credit they left it all on the field in Saturday night’s game.

Hornridge skipper Jamie Way won a very important coin toss and elected to bat first.

He and Adam Malm (57) gave some early chances but battled through skippers Patrick Glover and Rein Geraghty to get the score to 50.

Ben Vandeleur was introduced and had Way stumped first ball which gave OD great confidence.

This brought the talented Alex Bray (52) to join Malm and together they held on until drinks with the score at 63.

Hornridge seemed to have

swapped out their water for red bull as they went hard after the break.

Pocket rocket leg spinner Josh Kohn bowled without luck as he had several chances put down and skied balls landing between fielders.

Man mountain Daniel Hargreaves came in and began bludgeoning the OD attack, taking Vendeleur for three big sixes.

Glover (5/23) was brought back at the death and began knocking over the Wanderers’ tail, but the damage had been done.

Selkirk (2/28) bent his back and pushed through a calf strain to restrict the total as well.

It would take something special from Selkirk as OD’s hopes of knocking off the daunting total rested with him.

He and Craig Nichols (10) started well until the OD keeper got a feather on a leg-side deliv-

ery from unlikely first change bowler in skipper Way, who was inspired.

Brendan Hill, Adam Homer and Roger I’Anson all went to soft dismissals with Way finishing with the great figures of 4/20.

Selkirk was the anchor, finding the boundary when it suited him, but with a majority of the Hornridge team on the boundary rope these boundaries soon dried up.

Glover (21) came in to assist against the slow bowling of Bray and Rhett Winter.

Selkirk (85) was running out of partners and the pressure and the run rate were rising.

Bray took three important wickets and a blinding one-handed catch to top off a man of the match performance.

Hargreaves came off a short run to take three late wickets to seal the win for the Wanderers.

These two sides will again do

battle this Friday night as Hornridge head into the match with a mental edge over OD and the winner to advance to face the Miners in the grand final.

Just like Gina Reinhardt it’s all about cattle: who can field the strongest team next week will go a long way to determining the victor.

Hornridge makes it into third spot on percentage over East Roxby by .08 of a percent.

Hornridge and Miners have had great contributions as of late, where OD have struggled with the bat and have put down some chances that would have altered some outcomes for them.

Catches do win matches.

Hornridge would have to go in as favourites this Friday night and whoever gets through will have a tough time against the Miners next week.

No Miners Cup in 2017

T

he Miners Cup is temporarily on hold, with the match between the Far North Football League (FNFL) and Broken Hill representative sides not to be contested in 2017.

The announcement comes as the FNFL draw was released last week

with the Miners Cup a notable exclusion.

New FNFL President Travis Brougham said it was disappointing to lose one of the biggest games on the local calendar, but he would be pushing hard to get it back next year.

“There will be no Miners Cup due to the AFL putting another game on instead of ours,” Brougham said.

“It is disappointing but we will be

trying for Adelaide Oval again next year to continue the Miners Cup.” The match had been contested for the past nine years with the FNFL currently ahead on the ledger at five wins to four.

While the Miners Cup will not go ahead this year, the FNFL representative side may still get the chance to play a match this season, with the association waiting to hear if they have been accepted into the Mort-

lock Shield competition.

The Mortlock Shield is held in Port Lincoln over the June long weekend every year and brings together the best teams from across the State.

“Kangaroo Island has pulled out of Mortlock and there is a spot available for another league to join,” Brougham told The Monitor.

“It would be a good hit out to see where the FNFL sit against some of

the best teams in SA. “We will have a strong team to put forward for Mortlock Shield, training will start when we have confirmation from the Mortlock committee that we are in.”

He said the Mortlock Shield idea had been approved by all the clubs and the opportunity was too good to pass up.
