DEVILS AT HEART: Three generations of Olympic Dam Sporting Club preparing for its 30th birthday celebrations at the weekend (from left) life member Tony Richter with grandchildren Arley McKenna, Lando and Sirra Montgomerie, current football player Stuart Clark, and life members Merv Rogers and Sandy Richter.
30 years of history
WRITTEN BY EMMA ZIRKEL
C
elebrations were in full swing as Olympic Dam Sporting Club (ODSC) rung in 30 years of history at the weekend.
Past and present players, life members and club supporters commemorated the club’s proud legacy, built on foundations of dedication, comradery and the hard work of members. Sandy and Tony Richter, along with Merv Rogers, are ODSC life members and have helped shape the club from its early years in the late 1980’s to what it is today.
Between them, Mr and Mrs Richter have worn just about every hat available to members of a sporting club in the Far North Football League. While Mrs Richter hasn’t donned the green and gold as a player, her dedication and involvement has been integral to the spirit of the club. “I was on the committee for well over ten years,” she said. “I used to sell lots and lots of raffles, (and) I ran water for the footy club for nearly ten years.” Mr Richter, a former player of the club, has also contributed a significant amount of volunteer time to the club as a league delegate, president,
was a mail medal winner in 1990 and reached the milestone of playing 150 games for the club. And Mr Rogers, a member of the club since 1988, has played for the football team, been a patron, a committee member and vice-president. “The club is a big part of our lives up here,” he said. “My family’s life too. “My son Daniel was also a winner of the mail medal.” As a club ODSC has won 13 football premierships in its time, with Mr Richter having played in six of those. According to the trio, winning the grand finals provided them with some of the best memories of their
time with the club. “We would celebrate for three days,” Mrs Richter said. “The after parties were unbelievable.” In the early days of the club, members and players would go to the camp one (now known as Olympic Village) bar, which was brought over to where the clubrooms are now sited and provided the foundation for the building which has stood for almost 20 years at Olympic Dam. “It would’ve taken us about a season from “whoa to go” in terms of actually constructing the clubrooms,” Mr Rogers said. “It used to just be a sand hill here
and then we built the ATCO shed,” Mr Richter added. Mrs Richter credits the club for being the reason she has stayed in Roxby Downs all these years. “In the early days if it wasn’t for the football and the club I don’t think I could have stayed, but I’ve developed such close ties with it,” she said. “Everyone lived for the footy,” Mr Rogers added. “It’s all we did back in the day. “The comradery started even before OD came about when we would go to Woomera to play football and then go to the Eldo pub after.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
Monitor NEWS The
Devils turn 30 CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE Over the years, that club comradery has changed as the population became more and more transient with the fly-in, fly-out lifestyle. “Roxby Downs used to have more of a country town feel but now it’s become a real mining town,” Mr Richter said. “We established a family from work and we would drink together at night and on the weekend and then work together, but now things have changed a bit,” Mr Rogers added. “The change of roster and the shift structure has changed the way people in the town interact with each other,” Mrs Richter said. “In the early days you could drive down the street and you would know everyone, you’d be able to name all the kids you saw, but things change and that’s just the way it is. “But we’ve got a lot of new young people and they’re doing a great job in keeping the spirit alive.”

State Kangaroo count underway
A
n annual Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources sur vey to track kangaroo populations across the State has begun.
Hair today, gone tomorrow T
ony Weir’s smooth face now matches the top of his head after he shaved off his beard in support of two colleagues’ fundraising last week. Mr Weir is now looking a little different after Joe D’Arrigo did the
honours last Friday afternoon. Mr Weir agreed to shave his beard to help raise funds for two of his workmates; Verity Hollobone, who is heading away with the Road Boss Rally next month, and Sasha Yantewo, who will participate in Dry July.
RIGHT: Joe D’Arrigo gets the shave underway.
BELOW: Roxbylink Operations Manager Tony Weir (centre) had his beard shaved on Friday in support of Verity Hollobone and Sasha Yantewo’s fundraising efforts.
The aerial count will cover an area of 211,000 square kilometres and will be conducted over a four week period to uncover valuable information on trends in kangaroo populations. Sustainability, Environment and Conservation Minister Ian Hunter said the survey will indicate that kangaroo populations are largely responsive to climatic conditions… (with) some pastoral properties reporting very high numbers of kangaroos.

We’re stepping forward, with a $200 million Future Jobs Fund. For most of us, a secure job means everything. That’s why our State Government is putting South Australian jobs first, with a new $200 million Future Jobs Fund. As our State transitions from old industries to new, we’re creating jobs in growing sectors – like defence, energy, health, hi-tech, tourism, food and wine. We’re also:
• Cutting Payroll Tax for small business • Expanding the Job Accelerator Grant to include up to $15,000 for each new apprentice employed • New rules that mean South Australians are getting 90% of the jobs and contracts from major infrastructure projects
So what does this mean for us? It means more security about our working futures, more opportunities for new job seekers, and more ways to up-skill for the jobs of the future. The opportunities are already here – the plan is already in place. To find out more visit: sajobstoday.sa.gov.au

Dunes moves to healthier options R oxbylink’s Dunes Café has joined a South Australian G overnment pilot program aimed at offering healthier meal options for children at restaurants, cafes, hotels and clubs.
Beck Cooke, Elli Reschke, Sasha Yantewo and Tony D’Arrigo with some of the new healthy options available at the Dunes Cafe.
The Healthy Kids Menu initiative is being launched at the cafe this Thursday, 29 June and heralds some subtle – but exciting – changes to both the kids’ breakfast and lunch menus. According to Rebecca Cooke, Roxbylink Sport and Recreation
Advertisement
Officer, patrons will notice some healthy new options as well as some slight tweaks to some old favourites on the menu. “We are looking to see more healthy options available for our kids and the community,” she said. “As part of that, we’re taking part in this pilot program, which gives us guidelines, support and advice to help us implement (these changes).” The new children’s menus will include at least 50 per cent healthy options – and children might be relieved to see that one of the lunch menu’s most popular items has been kept. “We will still have nuggets and chips on the menu, but healthy options are now also available to choose,” Ms Cooke said. New additions to the lunch menu include a kid-sized salad wrap and grilled chicken burger, while 100% fruit juice is now available which is a healthier option than a traditional ‘pop top’ fruit drink. “We have also introduced plain low-fat milk as well as milk flavoured with sippah straws, which only have half a
teaspoon of sugar per serve and is within the guidelines,” Ms Cooke said. Education is a big part of the Healthy Kids Menu program and as part of the launch this Thursday, a stand will be set up in the Dunes. Patrons will be able to find more information around the guidelines, including visual examples of the sugar content of some popular children’s meals. The Dunes’ breakfast menu has also undergone some subtle healthier tweaks, including swapping fried eggs for poached or scrambled on wholemeal toast, and introducing baked beans (also served on wholemeal toast). “We have also looked at the pancake, and are now serving it with fruit,” Ms Cooke said. “ There are thre e healthy options on the kids’ breakfast menu, while the bacon and egg muffin is still available.” For more information on the Healthy Kids Menu program, including resources for families, visit www.research. csiro.au/healthykidsmenu/home

Rally “most successful” yet
W
hen the Sh*tbox Rally made its way through Roxby Downs for its first stopover in late May, the town stood still to watch more than 200 cars roll in.
“When we came into Roxby Downs we were put in contact with Mr Croad who very generously donated a car to us in memory of Troy Gum,” Mr Smith said. “When we arrived the family came out and met us and while they refused any money we offered them, they asked us to display Troy’s obituary on the back window which, we did. “It was brought up the next day at our morning brief about what a great and inspiring story this was to kick the rally off and put into motion what the rally is all about.” Mr Smith said that while the car made it all the way to Cairns it wasn’t without a few hiccups along the way, with the back window shattering coming down a dirt road on day three of the rally. “There were only a few minor setbacks which are to be expected on a rally like this,” Mr Smith said. “The trusty commodore got us there in the end and we couldn’t have asked for a better outcome to be honest.” With this year’s rally including the highest number of unsealed roads, Mr Freeman said it took participants to some incredibly beautiful and isolated locations in Australia, and he thanked the people who were involved and donated to the cause. The rally will return in 2018 with the route taking teams from Brisbane to Darwin. BY EMMA ZIRKEL
Residents were able to see some of the flamboyant and eccentric ways the cars had been decorated as they travelled 3,800 kilometres from Adelaide to Cairns. The rally, which is an annual event, raised more than $1.66 million for cancer research, its best result ever – which is expected to climb even higher as more donations come in. Founder James Freeman said the amount included $36,500 raised by an auction and buyback of the colourful vehicles in Cairns. “The rally teams’ fundraising effort this year is an extraordinary achievement and something we can be immensely proud of,” he said. While 214 cars embarked on the journey, 20 of them were unable to make it the entire way. This included the original car belonging to the Testy Tooth Pilots team, who as a result received a generous donation from Michael Croad while in Roxby Downs. Testy Tooth Pilots team member Blake Smith told The Monitor that after experiencing car trouble they were in need of another vehicle to complete the journey.

Monitor OPINION The
GUEST EDITORIAL By Patrick Glover
Former Roxby journalist amidst UK chaos
For the past few months the world has stood still as the news of three unrelated attacks of terror shook England and claimed dozens of lives. In March, a man drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing four, then stabbed a policeman to death. In May, a bomb detonated at Manchester Arena killed 22 people and injured more than 100; while earlier this month eight people were killed – including a South Australian woman – when a van ran down pedestrians on
London Bridge, and then attacked people in nearby Borough Market. And on June 14, the grief of an already mourning nation was intensified with the horrific news of an apartment fire at the Grenfell Tower in west London, with at least 79 people believed to have perished Former journalist at The Monitor Patrick Glover is currently based in the United Kingdom (UK), about an hour from Manchester, and shared his personal account of the recent events. “I’ve only been in the UK for two months and already the country has been rocked by two terrorist attacks and an apartment fire. These tragic events have raised many concerns amongst locals and those of us travelling abroad. Manchester was the first
place hit when a bomb was set off in the foyer of an Ariana Grande concert only a few short weeks ago. This hit home as I had only visited the busy city the week prior and only live an hour down the motorway from Manchester, meaning it had an effect on people I know. London was hit with a similarly shocking attack just a few weeks later and again this rang alarm bells for me as I am due to travel there in early July with my family. It is scary when this kind of thing happens so close to you and I’m sure resulted in people altering travel plans in this beautiful country. I was at an international cricket match the other day in Birmingham just after these two incidents and there was a noticeable
increase in security presence. From a personal point of view I will not be letting these incidents affect my travel plans, the way I see it is this is the kind of thing that could happen anywhere and I want to make the most of being in the UK and see everything it has to offer. Major events have continued as scheduled over here since the attacks, with many stating if they didn’t the terrorists have won. I have adopted a similar way of thinking in that it’s important to continue our everyday lives while also remembering those who lost their lives in these dreadful attacks and their family and friends. Amongst this chaos a national election took place. But while both major party leaders, Theresa May and Jeremy Corbin,
both made statements about the severity of these attacks it did not influence the result, with Brexit still the main voting point. Last week’s apartment fire near London again raised concerns amongst people living locally. It has been a very tough few months for this country but the goodwill of its population have seen it pull through. My thoughts go out to all those affected by the attacks and/or fire, and I wish anyone coming into the country safe travels.”

KEY SHIPBUILDING STATE
CREATING MORE SA JOBS
The South Australian Liberal Team has secured $90 billion of investment with the continuous build of Offshore Patrol Vessels, Future Frigates and Future Submarines in South Australia.
The Turnbull Government’s Naval Shipbuilding Plan sets in stone SA as the naval shipbuilding state for all large vessels.
SA is also set to play a major role in sustaining existing vessels and the new fleet – creating more jobs and billions of dollars in further investment.
“
This massive program of investment demonstrates our commitment to both national security and economic prosperity, strengthening our national defence capability while developing new advanced manufacturing industries.
Your SA Federal Liberal team has secured major shipbuilding contracts for our State, which will create thousands of local SA jobs, opportunities for school leavers and regional business.
“
This investment will transform our local economy, growing the national naval shipbuilding and sustainment industry with SA workers, in new SA shipyards, using Australian resources.
It will begin with the construction of new shipyards this year, providing jobs for hundreds of South Australians and by the mid-late 2020s the navy shipbuilding industry in SA will expand to employ more than 5,200 people in construction and shipbuilding.

Aboriginal groups in the 1920’s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. Activities take place across the nation during NAIDOC Week and this year in Roxby Downs is very exciting with the NAIDOC
Main Street Festival this Sunday, 2 July from 12pm to 4pm with entertainment, bush tucker foods, stalls, entertainment and kids activities. The Roxby Downs NAIDOC awards and poster competition winners will also be announced on the day. Everyone is welcome to this free family-friendly event!

Success for Roxby MotoX riders
WRITTEN BY EMMA ZIRKEL
R
oxby Downs’ motocross riders have been competing in the South Australian Motocross Championships throughout the course of the year.
The championship sees riders and their support teams travel across the State, with the first round held in Port Lincoln in April, while the second was in Murray Bridge in May. The third round was hosted in Gillman, Adelaide from June 17 – 18 and marked the halfway point of the championship, with local riders performing well in their respective divisions. Taj Gow-Smith competed in the 85cc 12-U16 class and scored 3-4-3 which saw him place third overall on the day. Meanwhile, Sam Dixon competed in the 50cc 7-9 class and received a score of 12-13-13 with a ranking of 13th overall, while Ben Dixon competed in the 85cc 9-U12 class and received a score of 12-1316, to also reach 13th overall in his division for the day.
Another Roxby Downs’ rider, Axle Dean, placed tenth overall in the 65cc 10-U12 class with a score of 11-10-10. And Harley Bodger, competing in the MX1 intermediate class, did well to place eighth overall with a score of 14-15 and DNF (did not finish). With the intensity of the action on the track proving to be fierce, Bodger experienced an “off ” (fall) on the day and was unable to complete the final round. Roxby Downs Motocross Club (RDMXC) President Clint Gow-Smith congratulated all of the riders who competed in the State titles. “Best wishes to Harley who had a big off on the day, glad to hear you are ok and we’re all wishing you a speedy recovery,” he said. “Well done and a top effort guys. “The track was awesome so thanks to Motocross Riders Association (MRA) for putting on a great day.” The penultimate round of the competition will take place in Keith next month, with the final round to be held in Renmark in September.

Dash returns to the desert again
G
et those running shoes ready, Roxby Downs – the date for the ninth annual Roxby Downs Desert Dash has been set, and Sunday September 10 is the day.
Winner of last year’s Desert Dash 3km female event Sally Natt (left) with third place-getter Susanne Parker.
Known locally as the ‘Desert Dash’, the event is a family-family race over 3km, 5km and 10km courses starting from the Roxby Downs Town Oval. Participants run or walk from the oval out to turn around points along Olympic Way for the three and five-kilometre events, and at the Pimba turn-off for the 10km. The 3km event was a new addition to last year’s Desert Dash and was well-accepted as a great alternative for people with young
children who were not able to complete the longer distances. According to committee member Scott Humphries, the organisers have started to put the wheels in motion and are busy working on making this year’s dash another success. However, with some members of last year’s committee having left town, there is room for new volunteers to help out both in the lead-up and on the day. “We are looking for more people either on the committee or to volunteer on the day,” Humphries said. “The committee meets fortnightly in the lead-up to the event and it would be nice
to have some new members to help with succession planning for future years. “Anyone prepared to do some organising or running around beforehand – such as following up sponsorships – would be welcome, while on the day we also need a hand with directing competitors, setting up and packing down.” Entry forms will soon be available for people to pre-register in this year’s Desert Dash, with entries accepted until the day before the event. For more information about volunteering opportunities available, either on the committee or on the day, contact Humphries on 0488 089 981.

Hornridge proves too good in Devils clash Feature match D Grade Hornridge vs Olympic Dam
D
espite a third-quarter comeback by Olympic Dam, Hornridge was just too good in their D grade Roxby Downs Netball Association match on Friday night.
The game got off to a slow start, with the ball too-ing and fro-ing between both ends without a goal scored. Hornridge was vocal from the beginning and their defence of Jodie Oldfield and Whitney Maine asserted their dominance early, standing tall and deflecting a number of attempts into the Devils’ goal circle. At the other end of the court, Olympic Dam goal defence Vicky Harris was holding well against Hornridge goal attack Ella Halpin, who looked nervous and couldn’t quite find the goal ring.
Remarkably, after the ball see-sawed between both ends multiple times, the first goal was scored just before the five minute mark, with Halpin settling to nail a goal that had the spectators cheering. From there, the rest of the quarter was fairly even, with it looking like the game might be won on the accuracy of the goalers’ shooting. Scores were tied at the first break, four-all. Olympic Dam went into the second quarter with no team changes, while Hornridge moved a number of players including bringing Jessica Snell into the game in centre. Snell lined up against OD’s Sophie Eustace, who had had a great first quarter, and Hornridge seemed to immediately lift, goaling easily off the first pass of the quarter and then turning over the next centre pass - Olympic Dam’s – for another quick goal. Hornridge looked much steadier and started to convert each of their centre passes, as well as turn over a number of Olympic Dam’s, who were at times frustrated by the reach and

height of Oldfield and Maine. Halpin moved the ball well around the goal circle for Hornridge, backed up by Alice Carter on the wing, and despite the best efforts of the Devils’ Rose Lloyd, found her accuracy and started to dominate. Hornridge pulled away this quarter, outscoring Olympic Dam 14 goals to two, and went took a 12-goal advantage into the halftime break. Spurred on by the large number of spectators celebrating their club’s 30th anniversary, Olympic Dam lifted and took it right up to Hornridge in the third quarter. It was a green and gold first centre pass and the Devils sent it straight into T’leigha White for a classy goal. White had been held well by Harris for the first half of the match but seemed to settle and use her speed around the goal circle to her advantage. Olympic Dam then converted Hornridge’s centre pass for another quick goal, and Hornridge looked momentarily stunned. Claire
Turner joined the game in wing attack and looked promising for Olympic Dam, using her voice well to direct play and sending some accurate long passes into her goalers. However, Hornridge remained unruffled and despite being well-matched by Olympic Dam in most positions, continued to convert off their own centre passes and apply pressure down the court. At three-quarter time, Hornridge was ahead 28 to 15. Olympic Dam continued to challenge Hornridge in the final quarter and went goal for goal for some time, but could not match Halpin’s accuracy speed and accuracy in the goal ring. Devils’ Harris and Rhiannon Davis both took spectacular intercepts in the final minutes of the game which lifted their side, but ultimately they were outclassed by Hornridge who outscored them by three goals in the last quarter to notch up a 40-24 win.

espite battling hard, the East Roxby Roos were unable to keep up with the strength of the Roxby District Miners in Saturday’s Far North Football League clash. The Roos fought hard in the early moments of the match, but they struggled to
keep the Miners at bay, who snuck away with a six goal and four point to zero lead at quarter time. As the game wore on the gap between the scores got increasingly greater, with the Miners pulling away with a half time score of 12.9 (81) to 1.2 (8). Rhett Simms and Matthew Schipper pro-
vided some stand out performances for the Roos but with the likes of Todd Blacksell kicking seven goals for the Miners in the game, even the Roos’ best were unable to make a dent in the scoreline. The Miners managed to cruise to a 117-point lead with a full time score of 23.18 (156) to 6.3 (39).

Hornridge flies away with the win U nfortunately for Olympic Dam, a win was not on the cards to celebrate 30 years as a club on Saturday.
The Devils came out confident and strong in the first quarter and managed to secure a one-goal lead at the first break. But momentum was lost and by half time Hornridge managed to pull in front by one point with a score of 3.3 (21) to 3.2 (20). With such a close margin, the win was still in sight for the Devils, but
Hornridge put on a five-goal second half to take away that possibility. For the Devils, Sebastian Holbrook was top scorer and managed to secure two crucial goals for his team, backed up by best players including Daniel Rogers, Ian McBey and Dion McKenna. Hornridge’s best Jeffrey Harvey, Ashley Baxter and Ashley Webster put on brilliant performances and drove hard to get the ball down Hornridge’s end, who went on to almost double the Devils’ full time score of 8.6 (54) – 4.7 (31).
Hornridge player Ash Baxter (centre) eyes the ball as the Devils’ Levi Greenwood pursues and Stuart Clark (left) closes in.

SAPSASA soccer honour

R
oxby Downs is being represented in a State schools’ soccer competition for the first time.
Five local players – Max Masters, Agatino D’Arrigo, Mikey D’Arrigo, Mitch Boehm and Brock Vandeleur – were all selected to play for the “Northern” team in the South Australian Primary Schools Amateur Sports Association (SAPSASA) soccer carnival in Adelaide this week.
Their selection follows the boys’ move earlier this year to play soccer for the Port Augusta United Football Club in the Whyalla Junior Soccer Association, in a bid to broaden their opportunities and experiences within the sport. They are trained locally under the expert eye of Tony D’Arrigo, who is “incredibly proud” of the boys’ SAPSASA honour. “It has been really good and exciting going to Port Augusta,” D’Arrigo said. “The club has been fantastic, they have embraced our kids as their own and are really happy with them.”
The Northern side is made up from players from Port Augusta, Whyalla and Port Lincoln and the five local lads were selected to play after being noticed by selectors in their weekend games. “Someone actually said to them, ‘you need to have a look at the Roxby boys’ and that’s how they were selected to play in the SAPSASA team,” D’Arrigo said. “These kids are a stand out and they are looked up to by the other players. “They have been welcomed and have become important parts of their team…as someone who loves
the sport, I am just so proud of them.” The Northern SAPSASA soccer side will compete in division three this week, coming up against teams from the Riverland, Mount Barker, Gawler, North Eastern, Mid North, Lower South East, Yorke Peninsula and the Mid South East. “They will play 13 games over the five days so it will be a big week for them,” D’Arrigo said. D’Arrigo thanked both the Roxby Downs Area School and St Barbara’s Parish School for their support in allowing the boys to attend the SAPSASA carnival.
He also noted that, along with the chance to immerse themselves in the sport they love for an entire week, the week’s matches could lead on to bigger and better things for the players. “There will be scouts there so it’s a great opportunity for them,” he said. “We have had Alistair Williamson, who plays for Birkalla in under-16s, and Owen Mulady, who is with the Cobras’ under-14 side in Adelaide, come from Roxby Downs, and there might be other kids who would like to follow in their path.”
