Covenant Players entertain lunchtime dwellers

ed eARTh HQ was abuzz last Thursday lunchtime with the wonder of live entertainment.

Covenant Players, a travelling skit performance group entertained a

handful of locals looking for an alternative lunchtime thrill.

Locals Marinda Buys and Mary Lewis complemented the performance by preluding it with an expertly played piano duet.

Covenant Players was founded in 1963 by

Charles M Tanner, who has since written over 3,500 plays to suit all walks of life.

Tina Robinson and Louise Douglas were the two actresses who portrayed a number of characters in their series of short skits at Red eARTh HQ. “We choose the plays depending on the time length that we have and also what we’re doing, whether it’s community oriented, whether its for a church or a school, kindergartens, nursing homes all that sort of thing,” explained Tina.

Tina and Louise travel for four and a half months at a time, twice a year.

They represent one unit of performers that covers Western New South Wales, South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia.

“It’s a Christian travelling ministry, but we don’t have just Christian plays, we have plays that are appropriate for just about everything and every situation,” explained Louise.

Tina went on to say that they perform plays for all walks of life, from the very small to the very old. “We do performances in schools where we do character education, like bullying and peer pressure, respect, in high schools we’re doing drug and alcohol awareness programs, self esteem programs, comedy programs, kindergartens even rehab centres and drug and alcohol places.

Oh and prisons,” she said.

For their first time in Roxby Downs, the girls were pleasantly surprised at our tucked away desert oasis. “It’s a really lovely little town, really friendly people,” said Louise.

“I love the small town feel too, a small mining town has a different feel as well, its laidback which is really nice and you can just be yourself and just let people know who you are and what you’re doing,” added Tina.

107 more homes approved for stage II

ince the first two houses arrived at the new Copper Sands subdivision C in Roxby on June 29, 24 others have been built and delivered to the site, marking the halfway point of the project.

A spokesman from BHP Billiton told The Monitor the 52 houses in stage one will be in and ready for occupation by Christmas this year thanks to the builders and the work of many local contractors.

It was also announced that approval had been gained for the second phase of the housing subdivision which will include a further 107 houses.

With the latest announcement the pressure will be relieved on the demand for housing in the town and will go a long way to accommodate the increasing number of people arriving in

the town. Around 100 people are on the waiting list for BHP Billiton housing and with the announcement of stage two it addresses the immediate backlog.

The spokesperson said three builders are being used to construct the houses offsite before being transported to Roxby Downs.

“Country Living Homes (Moonta), Selecta Homes (Parafield Gardens), and System Built Homes (Pooraka) are building the houses and once on site a number of local businesses are involved in finishing them ready for occupation.”

These local companies include MPS Building and Electrical, Heading Contractors, Outback Landscaping, Roxby Pest Control, Cowell Electric, ODT Australis, Coates, Roxby Traders (Mitre 10), Bianco @ Roxby Downs & Holcim.

Local businesses to receive SAFECOM volunteer awards

A

number of Roxby Downs businesses, including BHP Billiton, will receive awards at a South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission (SAFECOM) volunteer recognition event being held next week.

Along with BHP Billiton, the local businesses receiving awards include Monadelphous, Roxby Downs Pharmacy, Subway, Glenloth Resources and Northlands Plumbing and Construction.

Each of these businesses has staff who volunteer for the Country Fire Service (CFS) or the State Emergency Service (SES).

The awards will be jointly presented by SAFECOM Chief Executive David Place, CFS Chief Officer Greg Nettleton and SES Chief Officer Chris Beattie at a ceremony at the: Roxby Downs Club, Burgoyne Street, Roxby Downs on Thurs-

day 25 August from 6pm.

Toni Richardson, SAFECOM’s Acting Manager, Volunteer Services Branch, said Volunteer and Employer Recognition Support Program (VERSP) events recognise the contribution local businesses, organisations and self-employed people make to ensure the safety of their communities.

Mr Place said: “CFS and SES volunteers, along with retained firefighters for the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS), play a crucial role in South Australia’s emergency services sector. It’s great to see that, in today’s economic climate, these peoples’ employers value and understand the importance of the work that they undertake.”

About 60 people are expected to attend the award presentation, which will coincide with a SAFECOM Board meeting also being held in Roxby Downs on the same day.

These businesses also assist in improving the homes to a six star energy rating efficiency with additional features and gas boosted solar hot water systems. The 52 new homes are in a range of configurations (two, three and four bedrooms) to suit varying accommodation requirements and will all be used for BHP Billiton at this stage.

The houses in the first phase of subdivision C are arriving in town every week and the 52 are expected to be in place by the end of September early October.

Although BHP Billiton is building so many new homes, the ripples from housing demand in Roxby Downs are washing over the region. In nearby Andamooka, house prices are regularly hitting the $300,000 mark.

Three ABC newsmen die in helicopter crash

Three ABC employees have been reported dead after a helicopter crash near Lake Eyre around 7.30pm Thursday, August 18.

ABC senior journalist Paul Lockyer, cameraman John Bean and pilot Gary Ticehurst were reportedly in the helicopter after they were filming a news and current affairs documentary on the Lake Eyre region.

The burned wreckage is spread across a large area on the eastern shore of Lake Eyre called Cooper Inlet.

Rex Ellis, local tour operator, was first on the scene after seeing the helicopter flying extremely low.

Mr Ellis along with his team alerted The Royal Flying Doctor Service and the police as they travelled to the scene in four boats.

During an interview on 891 ABC Adelaide to Matthew Abraham and David Bevan, Mr Ellis said the ABC news crew took off from Pelican Island in the Cooper Creek inlet about 7.05pm for Muloorina Station, to the south.

“We just saw a glow and we realised something pretty bad had happened … It

took us an hour to get to the scene, but it was too late to do anything for them,” he said.

Port Augusta police including a crime scene examiner arrived at the wreckage scene in the early hours of Friday morning.

During broadcast on the ABC network last Friday ABC Managing Director, Mark Scott, described the trio as ‘the best of the best’.

“Paul, Gary and John have each given decades of service to the ABC. They are passionate about their work and finding great stories from all over Australia to bring to the public.”

Mr Bean was an award winning cameraman who had worked for ABC for 20 years while Mr Ticehurst had close to 40 years helicopter experience and Mr Lockyer had a career spanning more than 40 years winning a Logie award for best television reporter.

Over the weekend the three bodies were recovered from the wreckage. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is continuing investigations at the crash site.

piece of Roxby Downs has gone to Parliament House.

Local artist, Dave Kovac, whose work has impressed Speaker Lyn Breuer was commissioned by the Parliament to create a piece that will be used as gifts for visiting dignitaries including MP’s, Ambassadors and Consuls from overseas.

Ms Breuer provided examples of Kovac’s work to the Parliament, and it was decided to ask him to create a special piece. This is a most prestigious result for him.

Dave recently presented

a beautiful representation, in pastel, of a Sturt Desert Pea to the Parliament. The metre high framed art work now takes pride of place over the mantelpiece in the office of the Speaker at Parliament House in Adelaide.

A quantity of beautifully presented, boxed prints of the same subject has been produced. These gifts will be presented to visiting dignitaries from countries all round the world or may be taken by Ministers or MPs on trade trips. It is customary to provide gifts on these occasions. Each box contains the pastel print and a descriptive piece of the

Sturt Desert Pea including a précis of the artist.

Minerals exploration and development will go ahead on the Carrapateena prospect, following the signing of an agreement between the native title holders and the exploration company.

The Kokatha Uwankara Native Title Claimants have entered into a Deed of Acknowledgement and Assumption with mining company OZ Minerals Carrapateena Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of OZ Minerals Limited.

The Deed marks the agreement between the parties to allow for the on-going exploration and development of the Carrapateena prospect, located 100 kms South East of Olympic Dam and 130 kms North of Port Augusta, on the eastern margin of the Gawler Craton.

The Carrapateena deposit was discovered in 2005 by Rudy Gomez of RMG under the South Australian Government’s PACE exploration incentive program and was purchased

by Oz Minerals in 2011.

The project comprises of four exploration licences covering 1,070 km2 in central South Australia. The project is situated approximately 75 kilometres from the Stuart Highway and is relatively close to the Adelaide to Darwin Railway.

The deposit, like Olympic Dam and Prominent Hill, is an Iron Oxide Copper-Gold deposit. It is hosted in a brecciated granite complex and copper is mostly chalcopyrite with a discrete high grade bornite zone.

One of OZ Minerals’ first priorities will

be establishing an Inferred Mineral Resource for the northern area of the deposit.

Assuming completion of required exploration drilling and mining option studies, a prefeasibility study would potentially commence in 2012 and would be anticipated to take approximately one year. After this, full feasibility studies would take a further 18 to 24 months. If studies are positive and the project is approved for development, construction of the plant and infrastructure, along with mine development could commence around 2015.

Construction and mine development would likely take a further two years.

The new Native Title Deed amends an existing agreement and supersedes and substantially replicates previous agreements, dating back to early 2006, between Teck Australia Pty Ltd, the Kokatha Uwankara Native Title Claimants and formerly overlapping native title claim groups.

The Agreement by Kokatha Uwankara to the Deed of Assignment and Assumption demonstrates that the Kokatha Uwankara is not opposed to mineral exploration on the area of their registered native title claim, even where the prospect is located in close proximity to Lake Torrens.

This news should give comfort to mineral explorers in this area that their exploration programs will not be blocked unless there are real and legitimate cultural concerns about the area to be explored.

Indications for OZ Minerals’ exploration activities look favourable: “The Kokatha Uwankara people are not opposed to mineral exploration,” one of the applicants for the native title claimants, Mr. Andrew Starkey said. “We are definitely not out to block mining, it’s just that some places are too important culturally and spiritually to allow drilling activities. The OZ Minerals scenario is far away enough from the Lake’s surface that Kokatha is prepared to allow some exploration there.”

OZ Minerals Managing Director and CEO Terry Burgess said, “Our dealings with the Kokatha Uwankara have been very positive to date and we look forward to continuing to work with them as we progress the Carrapateena project. We enjoy good relationships with the Traditional Owners around our mine at Prominent Hill and hope we can share the benefits of our activities with the Kokatha Uwankara in similar ways.”

Parry Agius, CEO of South Australian Native Title Services said the agreement should be viewed as an example of how South Australian native title groups are willing to negotiate appropriate exploration and development opportunities.

“Aboriginal people are well aware that minerals exploration and development is important and can lead to important employment and education opportunities to local communities,” said Mr Agius.

“It’s all about balance, balancing the rights and interests of all parties,” he said.

Take a bow Roxby

I

n the letters column this issue a Melbourne family has often city dwellers these days don’t even know their neighbours had its faith in human nature restored after the generos- let alone talk to them or God forbid help them out!

Could this be part of the reason why some people in England ity of some outstanding Roxby Downs people.

The family of two adults and three children on an adventure in the outback had an unfortunate accident that put their car and trailer out of action and injured one of their children.

Two ambulances and their crews were dispatched to pick-up the stranded family on the Oodnadatta Track but in typical country style, their empathy went well beyond the scope of their volunteer capacity and in doing so changed the lives of these city folk, who now try to emulate their deeds.

This story is not uncommon in country areas all over Australia and is a reason that keeps small regional communities together.

It is almost indoctrinated into the way of life from day one or the day anyone moves to a smaller town when care and compassion of others is the norm.

Big cities could do well to follow these simple lessons. All too

have become disenfranchised to the point of rioting? The same is beginning to happen here in Australia and unless addressed could happen to us in the future.

Care and compassion of others starts at home and there are some exceptional role models in our community who have, through simple acts, improved the lot of others. They don’t seek recognition and they don’t want recompense – these people do it because that’s the way they have been brought-up.

It’s a case of passing on the compassion to others and hopefully this kind of generosity will spread far and wide.

So Dave, Col, and Dr Peter have inspired one family to show the same generosity to others – let’s all follow in their footsteps.

There are many others and a couple of our local taxi drivers fall into a category of going beyond the call of duty.

Roxby generosity restores my faith in humans

I would just like to give recognition to members in the Roxby Downs community who go out of their way to help people.

Early in July my family with three children under age seven set off from Melbourne on an exciting adventure with our 4WD and camper trailer to drive the Oodnadatta Track and head on to Uluru. Disaster struck on day seven when we rolled the car and trailer twice on the Oodnadatta Track, only a few kilometers from Coward Springs. Nearly every car that drove past pulled over to make sure we were ok. One family with a satellite phone stayed with us until the police or ambulance arrived and made several phone calls to everybody they could think of to get help for us (we managed to crash on camel cup day in Marree and the police were not answering the phone!).

Two ambulances arrived and ferried the whole family back into Roxby Downs. My daughter, who had suspected whiplash, still remembers the nice man and lady in the ambulance and the Dr Peter at the hospital, who let us stay overnight because we had nowhere else to go (and it was close to midnight).

Col, the ambo who drove in one ambulance went home and brought me a jar of his own pickled olives because we had been chatting about them on the ride to Roxby. Dave, who my husband travelled with in the ambulance, took my husband

back out to the track the next day in his truck to pick up our belongings and bring our car and trailer back to town. Since then he has worked on fixing our trailer and will drive it to Adelaide so we don’t have as far to travel to pick it up. This kind of generosity and sense of community astounds us as it is something you don’t see in Melbourne. All of my family wants to move to Roxby Downs!

So I just want to say a big thank you to all of you who helped us, it still brings tears to my eyes and makes me feel very humbled. It also restores my faith in humans and inspires my husband and myself to show the same generosity to others (especially those we don’t know.)

Dangerous act of cruelty

On Thursday, August 18 at approximately 4pm two young teenage boys allegedly chased a kangaroo on their dirt bikes onto the highway where it hit a four wheel drive passing by.

The incident occurred before the turn off to Andamooka across from the ‘Fun Bowl’ where more teenagers were waiting.

The boys were riding a red Honda and yellow Suzuki dirt bike.

The kangaroo hit back left door of the vehicle where a young girl was sitting.

The teenagers involved saw the kangaroo hit the car and quickly disappeared.

Kirsty Crack who was in the vehicle at the time said, “The kangaroo could have flipped the car… they’re dangerous, stupid boys.”

The kangaroo died after it was hit by the vehicle.

“The kids were in the car so my husband couldn’t put it down. It took 20 minutes to die,” Mrs Crack said.

Midwives to visit every two weeks

E

xpectant mothers in Roxby Downs will that the visits will occur approximately every two now have fortnightly access to support and weeks.

“Ladies can come along at any stage of their advice from Port Augusta midwives until pregnancy and the midwives will check their health the locally based position has been filled.

While the visits previously occurred every six weeks, demand has led Country Health SA (CHSA) to add more midwives to the rotation, meaning the service can now be offered at regular two week intervals.

Ros McRae, Director of Flinders and Outback Health Service, CHSA said the visiting midwives provide ante-natal and post-natal appointments, free of charge for anyone in the community.

“Originally we weren’t sure how much capacity the visiting midwives would have but with such a fantastic response to the service we’ve been able to secure more midwives to help staff it,” Ms McRae said.

“With current staffing we can now confirm

as well as the baby’s health, answer any questions they may have and discuss their preferred birthing plan.

“The visits will continue on the fortnight schedule while CHSA actively recruits to fill thelocally based community midwife position.”

Throughout September visits are scheduled for: Thursday 1 September Thursday 15 September Thursday 29 September Due to the popularity of the service, those wishing to see a midwife are encouraged to call first and make an appointment to avoid disappointment.

oxby Downs was blessed last Friday night with an array of culinary delights at the Roxby Downs Kindergarten’s inaugural Organic Food and Wine Festival.

Major supplier, Protero wineries, acted as host for the evening, with founder Rosemary Baldasso addressing the buzzing crowd of about 50.

Every product featured at the tasting night was described by Rosemary as ‘clean, pristine and with the least amount of preservatives possible’. There were cheeses, olives, meringues, almond breads, chocolates, and of course wines, amongst others. Guests were pleasantly surprised at the creamy cheeses of La Vera, the crispness of the almond breads and the richness of the chocolates as they milled their way around the room.

Entertainment was provided by the Roxby Downs Folk Group, who played pleasant background music to set the scene.

Rosemary, in her address to the audience, explained how Bree Galbraith first attracted her to Roxby Downs when she visited her cellar a number of months ago. “Its overwhelmed me the welcome I have received here today – if it wasn’t for Bree Galbraith I wouldn’t be here today – she wandered into my cel-

Michelle and Mark Thomas, former residents of Roxby Downs, supplied homemade jams and sauces made with seasonally available produce.

Milano Olives supplied gourmet olives. Rosemary explained that their products are so pure, that no chemicals are used when sterilising their jars, only boiling water.

Third generation cheese makers, The Marmorale family, brought up four varieties of their La Vera cheese. “The cheeses that this family produce are absolutely divine you need to taste them for yourselves to realise just how good they are and again clean and pristine and as natural as they can possibly have them,” said Rosemary.

The legacy of Protero wines had an interesting start, as Rosemary said it was only in 1998 that her husband bought a plot of land and revealed his dream to become a vinyaron.

“To be honest with you, he knows diddlysquat about wine and I know less than he does. He’s not a big drinker in fact he’s given it up and I’ve never drunk in my life anyway,” said Rosemary animatedly.

acquired a taste for it – I’m a weird Italian, I don’t eat olives, don’t drink coffee, don’t drink vino and I don’t play around with the boys either!”

She said his determination found them a viticultural consultant and wine maker and helped them establish their vineyard.

“He’s made a success out of it in the sense that you look at the wines that he’s produced since 2004 – every single one of them has been awarded with either trophies or gold medals,” she said.

Protero wines are featured on wine lists in Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide and even in the Opera House, with future ambitions of entering the Melbourne market.

“So yes, I’m eating humble pie,” she admitted.

The night, which was held as a fundraiser to buy benches and other resources for the kindergarten, has been deemed a success. “We are all here for the simple reason of giving the children of Roxby Downs the best education they can get,” said Rosemary.

“In order to do that the kindergarten needs resources. When Bree approached me at the cellar door and made the mention of perhaps coming up and getting involved in this, it was the cementing force that said yes, education, children, what can I do to help. I committed myself, I am here.”

Arid Recovery visits St Barbara’s Parish School

rid Recovery visited the St Barbara’s Parish School reception classes on Thursday, August 18, 2011.

Perri Carter from Arid Recovery introduced the students to various animals that are homed at the reserve before their visit on Wednesday, September 7.

The students were amazed as they learned of where the animals live and what they eat.

Arid Recovery is based near Olympic Dam and is an ecosystem restorative initiative that was established in 1997 and received valuable support from BHP Billiton.

The complete protection area has been eradicated of all feral cats, rabbits and foxes allowing native animals and fauna to flourish in the area.

School Choir ready for Festival

The talented St Barbara’s Parish School choir will once again be involved in the Catholic Schools Music Festival in Adelaide on September 26, 2011.

Sally Hoffman has been leading the students through numerous practise sessions from the beginning of term one in time for the festival.

Miss Hoffman said it is a fantastic opportunity for students to participate in a music production of this scale.

“Students get to perform on the Festival theatre stage with 400 other students from Catholic schools around the state. Our school travels the furthest to make it to the festival. The performance experience is enormous,” she said.

St Barbara’s Parish School has been attending the festival for three years and this year has 13 female and 4 male students attending.

The Catholic Schools Music Festival is held annually over four days at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

students from various schools around South Australia band together with talented soloists and ensembles to create an amazing festival of sound.

Miss Hoffman believes the Catholic Schools Music Festival is an important part of music education. “Students learn to read music, notes, pitch their voice, sing in time to music, learn to work together and have lots of fun.

They get to experience the joy of performing in front of a massive audience,” she said.

This year, 75 family and friends will be travelling to Adelaide in support of the St Barbara’s Parish School students.

“The parents support is much appreciated. Without the parents transporting students to Adelaide the festival would not exist for St Barbara’s,” Miss Hoffman said.

The festival began in 1989 when 16 schools participated and has grown dramatically as last year 1,600 student’s from 67 South Australian schools participated.

he immunisation debate has waged a ďŹ erce war amongst health professionals and concerned parents for years.

The various pros and cons trickle throughout forum websites all over the internet, without deďŹ nitive answers, and it seems everybody has their own opinion.

Local Mum, Aimee-Lee Elson said the decision was easy with her two children, Tarkyn, 3, and Zarli, 1. “If they are not immunised then they could spread the diseases to children that may be too young to be immunised,� stated Aimee-Lee. “If they go to kindergarten they are carrying the disease around with them. “I don’t get why people don’t immunise their kids.� AimeeLee went on to point out the speculation some might have with certain immunisations causing autism, but maintains she is happy both her children are immunised. “Tarkyn starts kindy soon and I’m glad that he’s immunised. Going to kindy, obviously there are kids there that aren’t immunised, so I’m really glad that he is. “I know it’s everyone’s personal decision but, you want to protect your kids from everything,� she said.

Roxby mum, has two children, Zac, 9, and Kyla, 5, and she too feels very strongly about immunisation. She pointed out that some diseases, such as polio and diphtheria, have been completely eradicated because of successful immunisation. “My kids are both immunised,� she said. “I believe in immunisation.

Obviously to help get rid of the bad diseases.�

She, like Aimee-Lee also mentioned the supposition of autism as a side eect to immunisation. “Some people believe that immunisation can cause autism, but I think that the statistics prove that they should be immunised. “My niece is autistic, she is still immunised, my sister said if she were to have another kid, she would still immunise, because there is not enough proof to prove that it’s caused through that.â€?

Kerin conceded that the only side eect that her children had received was a bit of ‘grumpiness’, to which she stated “give them some panadol and they get over it! Apart from that they have been ďŹ ne!â€?

Naming ceremonies Name giving ceremonies have been around for centuries and have a history nearly as old as the human race.

It is not baptism or christening as they are by definition religious so are out of scope for civil celebrants.

However, the name giving ceremonies performed by celebrants can be a meaningful and fulfilling experience for all concerned. It is an occasion to celebrate a new birth with family and friends and welcome the child to the family.

It deepens relationship for parents, mentors or guardians as we refer to them as godparents; the term is only used in a cultural sense.

For family the ceremony can incorporate many things that are of importance to them with the inclusion of other siblings or grandparents who generally have a very important role to play in the child’s upbringing along with any other family or friends who share a close bong to the family.

The use of symbolism is also important and that can vary as much as your imagination; anything from planting a tree to lighting candles can be used to make a thoughtful and moving ceremony.

The use of music is also a very important medium.

The ceremony also does have some legal significance as a naming certificate signed by five witnesses i.e. (celebrants, parents and godparents) would be accepted by the court as sufficient evidence to rectify a non-record of birth situation (when a birth is not registered with state authorities due to a mistake or negligence) or to rectify a wrong entry in the records.

As a resident celebrant living here in Roxby Wendy Lewis hopes to continue to contribute to the community in that same role.

Natasha McEvoy took over the business Babies, Bellies and More at the end of June this year from Ali Webber.

She specialises in the casting of babies and children’s hands and feet, adult engagement and wedding hands, pregnant bellies and has now introduced custom framing to the mix.

Mrs McEvoy said that taking over the business has been challenging but rewarding.

She said that she and her husband were thinking of different options for something to do while she was a

stay at home mum with her son. “I’ve always wanted to be involved with children and so when the opportunity came up to buy the business I jumped at the chance,” she said.

Mrs McEvoy makes casts with plaster bandages and has many different options, even a sibling range and having partners hands cast together with their wedding bands.

For something a bit different and those that are not interested in moulding Mrs

McEvoy is in the process of doing her first hand and feet ink prints for babies.

Call it ‘Twintuition’

T

he birth of twin babies is a miraculous event.

Whether they be genetically identical or fraternal, twin children seem to hold an irreparable bond and closeness that is seemingly indescribable.

Local mum, Rowena Barber, has twin three year old boys, Khayden and Corey and says her twins always consider each other, no matter what the circumstance is.

“They do everything together, when we went into the supermarket a while ago, Corey went to Lunch on the Run, so I put Khayden in the trolley. Corey ran into Lunch on the Run and stole two drink bottles,” said Rowena.

“So I had to take the two bottles into the shop and apologise, but they take two – everything is two!” she said.

The twins have an older, seven year old brother, but as Rowena explained, the connection just isn’t quite as close. “With their older brother, you can see that they’re related but, twins definitely have that little ‘thing’.”

An example of a deeper level of connection between Corey and Khayden was exposed one night after bedtime when Rowena heard crying. “Khayden was screaming one night in his cot and it wasn’t your normal baby cry, something was wrong,” she explained.

“So I went up there and picked him up, and there

was physically nothing wrong with him but he kept crying.

“I looked over at Corey and Corey actually had his legs caught in the cot and wasn’t saying anything but Khayden cried for him and got my attention.

“As soon as I released Corey, Khayden’s crying stopped.”

London’s King’s College genetic analyst, Dr Lynne Cherkas has spent years studying twins, according to ‘The Times’. She has researched this shared emotion, or intuition.

The featured article, stated that Dr Cherkas has come across several cases in which, when one twin was giving birth, the other felt a shared pain, and even one where a

woman had a nightmare about a red car and discovered later that her twin had been severely injured in a car accident.

However generally, she said there is no applicable ‘pattern’. “We see a whole range of relationships twins who are very close and those who don’t get on,” she says. “If they are identical they often have a very close friendship, but some find it hard to be individuals and dislike being a twin.”

Rowena says that although they do have a special connection, they couldn’t be more different. “They’re not the same at all,” she said. “Looking at them, you would not picture that they’re twins as they’re not identical, and, they have such completely different personalities.”

Despite their obvious physical and personality differences, there is a deeper

kind of love that draws the two boys together.

Rowena described the two weeks the boys spent apart and Corey had to be taken to Adelaide. “That was really hard on them,” she said. “I took Corey to Adelaide hospital and he was in a panic – where’s Khayden, I want my Khayden, he said.

“And Khayden was just devastated, he was crying and just went quiet.

He would not speak to anyone,” she said.

Thanks to modern technology however, disaster was swiftly averted, when the boys communicated and saw each other using communication program, Skype.

“You don’t muck with them! They can bash each other, they can argue, play nicely, play nasty, but as soon as anyone else does it, you’re crossing the boundary. I like that part about it,” said Rowena.

Have you considered using cloth nappies for your children only to be told by well-meaning older friends and relatives, “Don’t! It’s so much work!”

If this all sounds too familiar, I’ve got some news for you. That was cloth nappying in the 1970s and this is one area where times have changed for the better. The era of the modern cloth nappy is NOW! Modern cloth nappies, or MCNs, have revolutionised nappy usage in recent years. Typically

made from materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, hemp or microfibre, MCNs are absorbent, don’t require pins or soaking and come in a wide range of funky prints and designs if you’re that way inclined.

Plastic, sweaty covers are a thing of the past too; many popular MCNs are an all-in-one design that comprises a waterproof cover usually made of a fabric treated with polyurethane laminate (PUL).

If using fitted cloth nappies that require a cover, you can opt for breathable PUL fabric or trusty wool, which becomes waterproof when lanolised.

The good news is that parents will save big bucks if they choose a cloth nappy system over the single-use disposable

alternative. The cost of a cloth nappy system varies from as low as $200 to $1500 for around two dozen nappies, compared with approximately $4000 per child for single-use disposables. That’s a saving of at least $2500 for your first child! Due solely to the fact that cloth nappies can generally(1) be used on subsequent children, this saving increases to at least $6500 for two children and $10,500 for three children!

Choosing cloth over disposables for full time use will also prevent the disposal of around 5300 nappies(2) to landfill per child. With these nappies typically taking hundreds of years to degrade, using cloth nappies will substantially reduce your family’s solid waste generation and direct toilet waste where it is designed to go – into our sewerage system and not our landfills. Even if you opt to use cloth nappies on a part time basis you will make a significant positive impact to your family’s eco footprint.

If your mind can’t quite get over the perceived time and effort required to switch to cloth, how does just five extra min-

utes to your daily routine sound?(3) So go on, follow the many parents in Roxby Downs that have joined the Modern Cloth Nappy Revolution and never be forced to do the emergency dash to the supermarket because you’ve run out of nappies again.

Former Roxby Downs boy and Rostrevor College border Jack Hombsch showed exactly what locals are made of when he was the first South Australian to be signed by the Greater Western Sydney franchise in 2010.

It’s just one of the many success stories of students attending Rostrevor College as borders in Adelaide.

A 2010 Rostrevor graduate, Hombsch has played 1st XVIII football for the last two seasons, mainly as a centre half back. High marking, accuracy by foot and composure under pressure are hallmarks of his overall ability.

Hombsch was signed with GWS towards the end of 2010, which took the anxiety of the draft out of the equation.

After his signing Jack said, “I think signing the contract is a huge relief as I don’t have to worry about the draft - it’s done.

But more importantly I’ve got a really exciting opportunity to be a part of something from the start.”

“Working with one of the greatest ever coaches, Sheeds (Kevin Sheedy) and people like Gubby Allan and Al McConnell just enhances the excite-

Hombsch had an automatic fan club in the boarding population at Rostrevor, which includes a number of Roxby Downs’ locals.

His marking exploits in a 2009 Under 16 State game, featured on You Tube, were popular fodder on boarding house PCs in 2010!

Hombsch was Head Boarder in 2010, and performed exceptionally well in his Year 12 exams scoring an ATAR of 90.15.

His brother Nick came to Rostrevor last year and made an immediate impact in the Year 10As. Nick is playing 1st XVIII this year as a high marking and creative forward.

Open day A feral free success!

A

pair of wedged tailed eagles flew over-head and not a feral animal was in sight, as over 150 people went behind the fence of the Arid Recovery Reserve on Sunday August 21, at the Arid Recovery Open Day. “The sun is shining and it’s a perfect Roxby day to have so many people visit the Reserve,” said Arid Recovery General Manager, Kylie Piper. “It’s also great to see so many new faces visiting Arid Recovery for the first time.”

Nature walks through the dunes, past the homes of the Reserve’s much-loved residents, the bilbies and the bettongs, were popular, as were the talks from plant and animal experts.

Some of the more adventurous took on the tag-along 4WD trip to the northern sections of the Reserve, driving over the dunes and past the old dog-fence, learning about some of the history and research of Arid Recovery along the way.

The highlight for many of the younger audience was the kids club, with colouring competitions and an opportunity to make poo!

“It sounds disgusting but the kids love it!”, remarked Perri Carter, Arid Recovery’s Volunteer and Community Assistant and the organiser of the event, “It’s also a chance for us to teach them about what different kinds of animals eat.”

By far the favourite activity of the day was the Macca tracker. With both kids and adults running through the dunes in search of the Arid Recovery mascot, Macca the Giant Bilby. Although adept at hiding Macca was eventually found behind a native pine and took time out of his busy schedule to get photos and hugs with some of his biggest fans.

Tennis club under threat of closure

The Roxby Downs Tennis Club is under threat after a recent AGM failed to make numbers.

Tennis Club President Shelley Fitzsimmons said without help filling the recently void positions of treasurer and secretary, the club is due to fold.

“We had an AGM on Tuesday night and we need half plus one I think it is to get the quorum to have a meeting and we didn’t even get enough for that,” she said.

second term running, said the recent loss of their long term secretary and treasurer has thrown the club into doubt.

“The same people have done it for years, but they’ve stepped on, they’ve moved on their kids are into other sports, and we just need some fresh blood to come in there and run it!

“We need to be able to run a summer comp and there’s a huge amount of people who want to play tennis,” she said.

“If we don’t get any attendance at the next AGM, the club will fold – I can’t do it all.”

Shelley said that the positions of the club are of minimal time commitment, and are fairly straight forward roles.

“Its not a hard committee to be on at all! We’ve had one tennis tournament, but its very basic! Its more a social club than anything,” she said.

Roadtrain rollover A road-train rolledover 30 kilometres south of Pimba on the night of Thursday, August 18 There were two injured transported to Woomera Hospital both in stable condition.

One was transferred to the Roxby hospital on the morning of Friday, 19 August with stable injuries.

There was a blockage to Stuart Highway while the truck was dismantled and removed.

ndy ‘Clarkey’ Clarke has won the regional NAB AFL Auskick Volunteer of the Year Award for his dedication to the Roxby Downs Auskick over the past four years. His relentless participation and support has helped Auskick grow to the 90 odd strong group it is today.

Andy was completely taken aback when he was presented with this award last Friday night at the town oval, and said it was the continual support of others that has made the Auskick and junior football what it is today. “It’s an honour,” he said. “But I can’t stress enough its all the other committee members that make Auskick happen. People like Tracy Millard and Mark Young, Taita – they put so much time into junior football in this town so if it weren’t for their efforts well Auskick wouldn’t be as it is today.”

Andy said the idea of Auskick is for the children to have fun. “All I can say is, I do it because it’s a lot of fun and I would encourage anyone who wants to get involved to get involved.

“That’s sort of the principle behind Auskick is parent carer involvement and getting as many as we can running out there and having fun,” he said.

“Especially kids at that age because the whole idea is for them to have an enjoyable experience and maybe kick on with it, get a taste of it and go from there.”

Andy said he enjoys most watching children grow into apt football players , ready for the junior league. “I think its just watching the little ones develop. We only do it for the one term, ten weeks, but even in that amount of time you see the kids come out - if they have held a football it hasn’t been very often and by the end of it they’re handballing and kicking and just to see them having fun.”

Andy finished by saying that, “anybody that wants to make the effort to come out and get involved, they will enjoy it. Especially with the number of kids we’re getting now, next year will be more again, i’d say next year will be over a hundred.”

Matthew Daddow, President of the Roxby Downs Junior Football League said Andy’s success would benefit the whole community. “Its a great award for the whole of the Roxby downs community and the committee for that matter.

“Clarkey has done a great job over the years – the numbers have increased tenfold so he’s looking at around 90 kids each week and it’s a pretty big job, with not a lot of help.

“He deserves everything he gets I reckon – things like this bring people out – to know they are going to get rewarded if they put their hand up, its just reward for his hard work!”

Matthew also told family and friends that witnessed Andy’s award presentation that he is going in as a hot favourite to win the national prize – a trip for two to the AFL Grand Final, a $5000 iSaver NAB account and a trip to Europe.

Playgrounds are an important part of Council’s community infrastructure.

As places of fun for children and families they contribute to the quality of life of our community. To ensure our playgrounds are safe and well maintained Council staff undertake regular inspections.

Municipal Works Manager Peter Keller said, “Various items are checked including the soft fall bark chips to ensure minimum levels are maintained and we look for evidence of graffiti and vandalism.”

“All play equipment is checked to ensure that there are no areas where little fingers and other parts of the body can become trapped.” Mr Keller said.

Bolts, screws and other fix-

ings are inspected to ensure that there are no protrusions or catch points and shade cloth is checked for rips and tears.

With summer approaching it is also important that the water fountains are all working and the steps for young children to reach the fountains are secure.

Finally the play equipment is looked over to ensure it is stable, free from movement and able to stand expected loads.

There are 6sixplaygrounds in Roxby Downs located in Hermit Street, Pine Crescent, Curdimurka Street, Pioneer Drive and Lions Park. “We encourage families to visit and enjoy the playgrounds and urge parents to notify Council as soon as possible if they notice any damaged or broken equipment,” Mr Keller said.

STARCLUB Club Development Program

STARCLUB is an initiative of the South Australian Office for Rectreation and Sport which aims to continually improve and develop sporting clubs.

A set of criteria has been created as a control to measure local sporting clubs against in order to enable the best environ-

ment possible for club members and the wider community.

Currently there are 25 questions in the criteria, ranging from legal structure to positive and welcoming demeanour.

Further research and consultation is continuous to help provide helpful feedback.

A ‘STARCLUB’ is de-

scried by the Office for Recreation and Sport as one with a clear vision going forward, is financially stable and has a strong membership and volunteer base.

This program has been developed to suit clubs of al sizes, and is reputable with the government and other organisations that value the role in well-run

community clubs can play in the community.

Roxby Downs Sports and Recreation co-chair Michael Esposito says “ We encourage clubs to take part in this program.

There is an online assessment tool which helps clubs work through the various questions with links to various resources.

It is a chance to bench-

mark your club operations against best practice”.

A

n open-mic afternoon at the Roxby Tavern was the informal end of the 2011 Red eARTh Festival.

It was a comfortable Sunday afternoon for music and arts lovers, who were treated to serene tunes from various local acts.

Rachel Young relaxed for the first time in months and reflected on the past four weeks of creative workshops and at times eclectic performances.

“It has gone really well, the workshops have been really well attended, people have tried things that they wouldn’t normally have tried and we’ve seen some new faces about the place because of it,” she said.

“Some people have come new to town and met people with a common interest as well.”

A stand out event of the festival was the ‘Singing for the terrified’ workshop, which has come out with possibility of a festive by-product.

“Looking at how many people that were terrified of singing went to the first singing workshop and continued it on and then performed was great,” said Rachel. “There’s talk of the A Capella group continuing to do some Christmas carols, that’s a highlight because that’s something that started in the festival and has grown into something that has legs of it’s own.”

All events were well attended and enjoyed by many, which was a major highlight for Rachel. “Me personally, because I was overseer of lots of things, I probably didn’t participate as much as if I was just attending,” she said.

“Probably for me the highlight was seeing the joy of others,

not necessarily me learning, but seeing the other people getting something out of it.”

The enthusiasm of some was of notable mention… “There were about five people that were multiple work-shoppers,” said Rachel.

“They attended probably at least five workshops, but they were all different.

“One lady even took time off of work, rescheduled her working day so she could attend one of the workshops. That kind of dedication, that brings a smile to my face!”

Rachel has announced that planning for 2013 will start this October, while this year’s successes and short falls are still fresh.

She said that earlier preparation could result in higher funding. “It’s the preparation of getting funding that we need to get in place early, and that will

make things run a lot smoother,” she said. “We need to do a good 12 months and that way we’ve got more chance of other funding pools like Festivals Australia and Arts SA. “If we’re organised with funding then we’ve got more choice of booking artists.

“What we’ve run here we’ve run pretty well on the sniff of an oily rag, so if we’re organised with some decent funding then we could do things differently but we could attract projects that would be more significant in cost value and hopefully reach as much if not more of the community than we have already.”

All money made from the festival goes straight back into local arts and 2013’s Red eARTh Festival.

Rachel thanked all participants of the festival and all sponsors.

Access Chiropractic Centre has provided chiropractic care to the Roxby Downs community for six years.

The chiropractic centre currently provides a fortnightly service on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings.

Dr Brandon Ngo, who consults in Roxby Downs, completed his Masters of Chiropractic Degree at MacQuarie University in Sydney.

Access Chiropractic opened its doors in Roxby to provide a chiropractic service to regional areas and prevent people having

to travel long distances for treatment.

Junior football rewarded for efforts

he junior football season will end with a bang this year, with the first ever Junior Football presentation day being held this Sunday, August 28.

The under 12s and under 16s will be awarded with various awards on the day, including the junior league’s own best and fairest vote count.

“It’s all new for us, this is our first one so we’ll learn from it I guess and build from it in years to come,” said Roxby Downs Junior Football President, Matthew Daddow. “All the kids are pretty excited.”

Mr Daddow explained that in his previous league, presentations were held for all junior footballers from the under 7s to the under 17s.

“I think we should reward the kids for a good season,” he said.

Tracey Millard and Karen Daddow have been instrumental in organising the day, which will be held at the Olympic Dam Football Club from 11.30am on Sunday.

Mr Daddow explained that the two women have organised everything collecting the votes to organising the venue, “Tracey’s been there for us,” said Mr Daddow. “It takes a long time so she’s done a good job there.”

With over 100 children expected to be present at this inaugural event, the day is expected to be very popular.

Sponsors and parents have been invited to thank them for all of their work and support throughout the season and Burley footballs have donated four match-fit footballs to serve as door prizes throughout the day.

“It’s been a big two months, we’ve been flat out with work and footy,” said Mr Daddow. “The teams going into this week are all sitting on about the same points so it’s going to be a big day for all.

“The kids are pumped!”

ony D’Arrigo has made his mark in Roxby thus far by bringing you high quality Mediterranean style foods at local restaurant Chives.

Now, Tony is working at the other end of the scale, looking to provide Roxby with a fully functional minor soccer league.

Tony, who comes from a traditionally Italian, soccer orientated family, was surprised when he moved here with his wife, Maria and son, Tino, to find there was no soccer competition.

“We’re from a soccer family, you know, all my brothers play,” said Tony. “The fact that I came here and Tino doesn’t have a team to play soccer in, and my nephews as well, sort of got up my nose a little bit.”

He said that he would like to be able to provide to the community an alternative to Aussie Rules Football during the AFL off season.

“There are a lot of good kids here with good talent and we want to try and utilise that, so if they do end up moving to Adelaide or somewhere, they can play and continue their career with soccer if they’d like to,” he said.

Tony, albeit growing up with soccer, continued to take his hobby to the next level, by starting his own soccer club in Darwin, and playing for the duration of his time in Darwin when he could. The life of his club neared ten years and only stopped when he moved to Adelaide.

Tony has had help both locally and further south in Adelaide in setting up this league.

He made special mention to Michael Esposito and Kelly Seward from Roxby Leisure, who have provided the means for this sport to go ahead.

The support of the Roxby Leisure Centre, Chives and other public supporters has also helped secure a visit from Soccer SA representative, John Mundy.

John, who is coming to Roxby on Monday, will help guide Tony as to how to run this new league.

Plans are already fully in motion to boost interest in soccer. Saturday, September 17 will be a “have – a – go” soccer day. “Kids and the parents can come there and play games and have some coaching – it’s just a soccer day! We want to re-introduce the people to soccer.”

The subsequent week will hopefully mark the first week of the new competition, with two age grades, 5 – 7 years and 7 – 14 years.

“I have spoken to the parents – I don’t think we’ll have any problem getting the parents support.

“I think once the football is over, a lot of kids may come over – one to keep their fitness up ready for football and if they’re really serious about their football, doing soccer will only help their skills.

“I’m pretty excited about it because if it works out it would be great. The only way it wouldn’t work out is if you don’t have people behind you.”

And so with that, Tony implores the youth of Roxby to just consider giving soccer a go.

“Parents get involved! Soccer is a fun game, especially at the small age group. If there are any people out there that have never tried a sport, to go ahead and give soccer a chance.

Even I you have no skills, it doesn’t matter.”

“Junior soccer is evolving from a social “come & try afternoon” into an official centre based competition,” said Operations Manager, Michael Esposito. “It’s exciting to see that participation has increased to the point where we now have a demand for games.

“Tony is the driving force behind junior soccer and it’s important to acknowledge that without passionate volunteers like Tony, this competition wouldn’t be a reality for our community.”

Hornridge hammer Miners A

t quarter time little separated Hornridge and Roxby Districts.

Roxby Districts’ midfielder Cody Kenny left the field in the first quarter with a match ending injury and Ricky Prosser left the field to have a profusely bleeding split lip attended to.

Hornridge took control of the game in the second quarter and their speedy players ran the ball into deliver to twin towers Trent Grosser and Bowde Kelly and goal sneak Koby Lynch.

Later in the match Ricky Prosser was forced to leave the ground under the blood rule and returned when trainers applied a bandage covering much of his lower face. He continued to present for his team mates despite close checking from the opposition.

Hornridge’s Ben Casey was outstanding while Mitchell Fazekas and Kyle Forrest provided plenty of run in the midfield. Peter Rhodes size and agility proved difficult for the Miners to match up on. Roxby Dis-

tricts’ utilities James Smart and Josh Rose battled valiantly against odds. Roxby Districts’ backline performed admirably under intense pressure but Hornridge continued in their relentless attack and were rewarded by a convincing victory and chance to play in next week’s preliminary final.

Devils defeat Roos

Olympic Dam’s Scott Montgomerie kicked four goals in his 100th game and celebrated with a victory and entry to the Grand Final on September 3. Andamooka led at times in the first half but could not widen the gap enough to hold off the experienced Devils’ team. Andamooka’s Monfries brothers are ball magnets but the Roo’s midfielders lacked the extra spark that crowd favourite Kahran McKenzie provides.

Devil Rian Hornhardt’s run and delivery was superb and his presence always lifts his team mates up to the next level when required. Olympic Dam’s Ben Woodall gathered plenty of the ball in the second half and

the Devils seemed to run out the match better than the tiring Andamooka team.

Next week Andamooka and Hornridge will meet in the preliminary final and it will be a real blockbuster with the youthful Magpies full of confidence and hoping their momentum will carry them through to the Grand Final. Andamooka have beaten Hornridge at every meeting this year. Hornridge, last year’s wooden spooners, young side will be giving it their all and the pressure will be on Andamooka to go on to the next step and compete in their first grand final since their defeat of the minor premiers Olympic Dam in 2007.

Monfries’ Mail Medal 12 year wait over for one of the league’s best

ustin ‘Austy’ Monfries received the Mail Medal award to a standing ovation on Saturday night, after 12 years in the league.

The accomplished footballer has grown up in Roxby Downs and played both for Olympic Dam and his current team Andamooka, amongst other leagues including those in Port Lincoln and North Adelaide.

Austy has been a high contender for the Far North Football League’s Mail Medallist for a number of years now, but says it has never been his highest priority.

“I was never too fussed about it I’d just rather win premierships than medals, doesn’t really bother me,” he said.

He thanked Andamooka Football Club for their support.

FNFL President, Barr y Mitchell said Austy as Mail Medallist, and runner up, Ben Woodall were both well deserved.

“I think they’re two very, very good footballers,” he said.

“I think Austy is a very worthy winner, he’s been in and around for a long time and it’s just great to see.

“He’s got a bit of character about him Austy, Austy is Austy. He’s been a big part of the Andamooka football club this year.

“He’s basically a locally grown product, it’s very good to see.”

Mr Mitchell said B en Woodall, who’s reputation from the far west preceded him, has lived up to all expectations. “Yeah, he’s a good footballer, he came into town with a big reputation and he has lived up to his reputation.

He plays the game hard, has a good go, it’s good to see him up there!”

Blackwood’s footballer of the year, Zaheer Mckenzie is arguably the eldest player in the competition at 38 years old, but his skill still proved to be more than that of his son, Andamooka footballer,

Jamahl Mckenzie, who won third place.

Richard Smith, Safety and Business Manager for Blackwoods, Roxby Downs said; “I think the response that Zaheer got was fantastic, I think that everybody appreciated that he was footballer of the year and that it was well deserved.

“It was just a bit spectacular that his son as well, Jamahl, was a place getter.”

Mr Smith went on to say that Zaheer is one of the best ever country footballers, given his successful history. McKenzie has been named in the Spencer Gulf League’s Footballers of the Century team and has also previously won the Madigan Medal in the same league.

Zaheer was awarded with a $3000 prize from Blackwoods and their supplier 1-11.
