MS Readathon veterans Baeley, 12, and Jonty, 9, from Roxby Downs have been passionately reading books and raising money for people with MS for seven years - and this year is no different.

More than 15,000 Australians have Multiple Sclerosis, which is the most common disease of the central nervous system among young Australians.

Baeley and Jonty’s Pop had MS and passed away in May this year.

The MS Society is the only organisation to provide specific care and support for those living with MS.

“We are participating again this year in honour of our Pop,” Baeley told The Monitor.

“It’s very sad because there isn’t a cure yet so it’s great to be able to help fundraise for research and hopefully help find that cure.

“We read books all year round, but I look forward to the MS Readathon time because it’s a great excuse to read even more,” she said.

MS causes the protective sheath around the nerve fibres to become damaged, interrupting messages from the brain and interfering with the brain’s ability to control functions such as sight, balance and speech.

Supersonic plane tests at Woomera WOOMERA…Woomera has welcomed an influx of almost 90 Japanese nationals this month to test a space-age supersonic passenger airplane locally in September.

Woomera is currently host to Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) staff who aim to produce a supersonic transport aircraft to supersede the international Concorde and TU-144 jets.

The first NEXST1 launch was conducted in July 2002, resulting in loss of the aeroplane during a failure at launch.

Since the first launch, JAXA has conducted an extensive reengineering program to “improve mission safety and success”.

The NEXST1 flight trials, next month, will involve a rocket-boosted launch of a one-tenth scale model airplane to an altitude of 19 km.

At that point the aeroplane will separate from the booster and begin a gliding descent at a velocity near Mach 2. The tests will confirm the aerodynamics and system design of the NEXST1.

The test airplane measures 11.5 meters in length, with a wingspan of 4.718m and a height of 1.245m.

The upcoming trials have been scheduled for September.

The cause and cure for Multiple Sclerosis is still unknown.

Sportsmen support football youth Young local To whom it may concern, Regarding the letters in The Monitor about underage footballers playing in the league teams in the Woomera & Districts Football League. (July 7 and July 21, 2005) What are we parents thinking to allow our son Nik McPhail to play senior football with adult men?

Well, for starters, we would not have allowed Nik to participate at this level if we were the slightest bit worried for his safety.

Yes, our kids must learn to crawl before they walk but how long do you hold a true, budding sportsman back, especially knowing that umpires are aware and responsible judges of this great Aussie sport?

I believe Hornridge Sporting Club is to be commended on their approach, guidance and their duty of care towards Nik in his recent senior football debut.

Our decision to allow Nik to play at this level was not a snap decision.

We discussed, evaluated the experience he has amassed playing SAPSASA, and qualifying for the SA State Squad in his age group.

We cannot wrap our children in cotton wool.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Let them live life…and what a thrill it was to see him excel on a field of play with grown men, all of whom are to be commended and proud of their approach towards youngsters trying out.

These men are real sportsmen who acknowledge that sometimes you have to guide youngsters - whether they be team mates or the opposition - and treat them with respect as they do other sportsmen.

Most local clubs do find it difficult to field a full team each week, with shift work being a major obstacle sometimes there is a need for teams to make up numbers for a game to be played.

We, as Nik’s parents, much rather enjoy seeing him excel in his chosen sport instead of being bored.

Our son practises hard on his football ability and we encourage and support him - after all isn’t that what parents are supposed to do?

On closing, we all work and live in a remote mining town and if participation in sport is a way to relax, refresh learn and enjoy, lets get involved and not ridicule. Let us do the thinking for our children you look after yours.

As we were tragically reminded this week by the death of local father of two Karl Eibl, time is limited.

You can’t take it with you - or so the proverb goes. But what will you leave behind?

For those of us with children - what are we leaving them?

And I’m not talking about investments and trust accounts - all that can be arranged with a quick trip to your local bank or financial advisor.

There’s a more precious investment our children need to bank on for a solid future.

Have we given them all the love, confidence and a sense of self that they are going to need if we’re not around for them as they grow? That’s something Karl knew how to do.

He was a man who celebrated family every day.

While his children will miss out on growing up with their Dad, they will never doubt how much he loved them when he was here.

Can yours and my children say the same thing?

It’s a close call in a town like this where so many families have two working parents and a plethora of commitments.

But there are ways to be involved in your child’s life - in all aspects of his or her life - even when you’re pressured for time.

And trust me, I’m not preaching - I’m trying to take my own advice on this one.

Don’t just drop your child off at sport - stay on the sidelines or even lend a hand. It’s not always cool, I know, but it’s always (at least secretly) appreciated and it will be remembered forever.

A very smart man called Stephen Biddulph wrote that ‘quality time’ is a myth - and what children want is ‘quantity’.

They want to do the shopping with you, stand alongside you while you wash the dishes, chat to you while you fix the car - so please, let them.

Read the newspaper aloud, and then let your child read aloud to you while you cook up dinner.

Read, talk, explain, flick through family albums, bring them along to work for a visit once in a while, and join them at school when you can.

Find time! Because if your time runs out - you want to leave a lot of love behind.

Bandicoot baby boom expected at reserve OLYMPIC DAM… Recent rains have prompted a bout of breeding in the Arid Recovery Western Barred Bandicoots populations.

The small native mammal’s breeding is usually triggered after periods of intense rainfall.

This is good news, according to reserve staff, because while the population of bandicoots has increased from the seven founding individuals in 2001 to around 35 current individuals, the number of bandicoots is still low compared to the other reintroduced species in the reserve; the Burrowing Bettong, the Greater Stick Nest Rat and the Greater Bilby.

Five female and two male bandicoots have been placed into a 10 hectare “soft release” enclosure, where their diet of insects, spiders and seeds has been supplemented with a mix of spinach, broccoli, fruit and high protein pellets.

This diet was designed to mimic the greenery that normally follows heavy rainfall, complemented by the local CFS spraying down the release pen to trick the bandicoots into thinking it had rained - but Mother Nature intervened two days prior with a deluge. Last week, it was confirmed that all five females were carrying pouch young, including one female carrying two bandicoot babies.

The average bandicoot weighs in at 230gms, making it the smallest of the bandicoot family.

Western Barred Bandicoots were once found throughout southern Australia, but are now restricted to two islands in Shark Bay, WA, and to two mainland populations Heirrisson Prong, Shark Bay, and at Arid Recovery.

School upgrades security

UNIQUE OPAL...Coober Pedy’s Trevor Berry, of the Old Timers Mine and Museum, displays the 80kg+ ‘Painted Lady’ now up for sale.

Opal find up for sale COOBER PEDY…A large, rare opal is out of hiding and on display in the world’s opal mining capital, Coober Pedy. The ‘Painted Lady’ - worth about $65,000 - was originally found in 1983.

It was displayed during America’s Cup celebrations in Fremantle, WA, the same year but has since remained in a secret location – until now.

Trevor Berry, of the Old Timers Mine and Museum in Coober Pedy, has been asked to sell the rare 80kg to 100kg gem on behalf of the miner who discovered it.

Mr Berry said the Painted Lady was

the largest of its type ever found in Coober Pedy.

“It is wonderful to have this amazing Painted Lady at the Old Timers Mine and Museum and it’s not just the tourists who are amazed by its size,” Mr Berry said.

The Painted Lady is in three pieces, an impressive 45cm by 28cm by 43cm, 28cm by 28cm by 15cm and 58cm by 36cm by 28cm. It has a grey base with assorted colour bars.

‘Painted Lady’ is so-named because when the quartzite rock surrounding the opal is broken it looks like an artist painted it.

ROXBY DOWNS...

Roxby Downs Area School will upgrade security systems to combat ongoing vandalism.

The school is currently installing new lighting throughout the school’s worst-hit areas.

Staff and the governing council are also considering electronic security system alternatives.

“We spend at least $1000 a week on nuisance vandalism,” principal Jim Michalanney told The Monitor.

“All the money we spend on vandalism diminishes what we can expend on resources.”

OSHC program secure ROXBY DOWNS… Local teacher Amanda Michalanney has stepped up to secure the shortterm future of Roxby Downs Area School’s OSHC program.

The Out of School Hours Care program was at jeopardy when coordinator Nicki Morgan left Roxby Downs on maternity leave at the end of last term.

With no qualified coordinator in place, and no response to advertisements for the position, RDAS seriously considered closing the program.

But now, teacher Amanda Michalanney will head up the program.

Assorted assaults and drink drivers in Roxby Downs ROXBY DOWNS…An ongoing altercation between an 18-year-old Roxby Downs youth and another Roxby Downs man, aged 57, has culminated in both combatants appearing before Roxby Downs Magistrates Court on Wednesday, July 27, 2005.

Magistrate Fred Field heard that the 57-year-old man, had been the victim of a series of “petty” conflicts with the youth, during the course of his employment as a garbage collector in Roxby Downs – dropping garbage in front of the man while he was cleaning, verbal harassment and, ultimately, emptying collected garbage over the man’s vehicle. In a report to police, the man said he ap-

proached the youth as a result of the “ongoing conflict” in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, February 20, at the Roxby Downs Lion’s Park. Witnesses reported the man held a gun against the youth’s back - but the accused told police he wielded a rechargeable drill - and threatened the youth to stay away from the man and his vehicle.

A drill was recovered in the man’s vehicle, by police, but no guns were found. He pleaded guilty to “threatening to harm” and the offence was proven without conviction. The man was fined $200 and placed under a 12 months good behaviour bond.

Later that day, the youth appeared before the Mag-

istrate on charges of arson and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The court heard that, following the aforementioned incident, the youth had attended the man’s home with another youth, thrown rocks on his roof and set rubbish on fire in the back of the man’s utility. The man then rushed from his home and tussled with the youths until “both the accused and the victim were covered in blood”.

When police later attended the man’s home in the course of investigating the original incident, they then conveyed him to the hospital with “cuts to the back of his head and his face”. The charges were proven without conviction and the youth was fined $500 with court costs.

CELEBRATIONS…Roxby Downs Health Services staff Lawrie Tyas, Janine Connell, Linda King and Janelle Whelan celebrate the service’s seventh birthday last week.

Health services celebrates birthday ROXBY DOWNS… Roxby Downs Health Services invited the community to help celebrate its seventh birthday last month.

The service had its humble beginnings as a clinic based in the Roxby Downs Council office.

The community’s current hospital was built in response to lobbying by local residents who formed a health advisory group and pres-

sured both government and industry bodies.

“This group continued to work hard in all aspects of the project until the building was complete and operational - so the RDHS really grew from the community,” director of nursing Janine Connell told The Monitor.

“The health service has grown considerably since 1998, changing to meet the needs of the growing community,”

she said.

“Changes have included the ceasing of obstetric services in 2001 and the planned reintroduction of this service in the near future.”

Mrs Connell said “the staff is very proud of the service we provide, and this is validated by our achievements”.

Local achievements include the service’s accreditation through the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards in 2003 and the subsequent achievement of being the first health service to achieve the heightened benchmark in 2005.

Staff have also featured highly in the service’s success, with midwife Janelle Whelan named Midwife of the Year for 2004 and Kathy Wooldridge achieving a Nursing Excellence award in 2005.

A 27-year-old Roxby Downs woman who repeatedly punched another woman before smashing her head through a glass window pleaded guilty to assault in Roxby Downs Magistrates Court last week. Court heard that the pair’s friendship had disintegrated over almost 10 years culminating in the victim fronting at the accused’s home and loudly accusing the woman of pouring superglue into the workings of a borrowed fan and phone. The victim threw down the items, hitting the accused in the leg.

As a result, the accused “lost it” and, as the woman walked away, threw the fan shroud at the back of her head before chasing after her and then dragging her to the ground by her hair. The offence was proven without conviction and the woman was fined $200 with a 12 months good behaviour bond.

A 19-year-old Woomera man who spat at a workmate was fined $600 and court costs after pleading guilty to assault. Court heard the youth, was drinking at local licensed premises where he was an employee, when staff at the hotel declined to serve him after he became abusive, spat on and physically threatened a female workmate. When police arrived on the scene, the man continued to struggle violently and was finally capsicum sprayed before being conveyed to the police station. Magistrate Fred Field stated that “it is important that people doing jobs in public services be protected from that kind of behaviour”.

A Roxby Downs man, 19, who hid in a toilet for more than half an hour to avoid giving a blood alcohol test, was fined a total of $821.25 including court costs for hindering police.

The man was also found guilty of driving with excess blood alcohol level and driving a defected ve-

hicle in October, 2004, after police stopped the driver on Gregory St. After being conveyed to the police station the man refused to leave the station toilet, pushing blood test forms back under the toilet door at police. In court, he told Magistrate Field that he had not been sick and that no one could “prove he wasn’t going to the toilet – some people just take longer than other people”.

A 38-year-old Roxby Downs man who assaulted the driver and then the passenger of a vehicle after stumbling out into the road in front of the car in the early hours of New Year’s Day, 2005, was convicted of assault and fined $600 with court costs last week. Court heard that the man was hospitalised after being thrown to the ground when the vehicle sped away. The man, who said he had been drinking heavily on the night, had no recollection of the incident. “It is unfortunate you were injured but you must be considered to be the author of your own misfortune,” Magistrate Fred Field told the accused. “This was an unprovoked attack by a drunken man – such behaviour must be discouraged.”

A Roxby Downs man was hospitalised with his facial piercings torn out, cuts, bruises and a broken finger after his 46-year-old roommate “punched him and put his head through the wall” in February of this year. The accused pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, citing that the pair had been friends for almost 10 years before the assault. The incident arose from claims that the victim had made “allegations causing difficulties in [the man’s] marriage”. The assault was proven without conviction and the man was fined $500 with court

costs.

An 18-year-old Roxby Downs man who repeatedly caused the tyres of his cars to squeal outside his Hermit St home in April this year, pleaded guilty to misusing a vehicle last week. Magistrate Fred Field cautioned the man that “misuse of a car can lead to quite serious damage or injury to people – there’s such power in vehicles these days”. The man was fined $200 with court costs.

A Roxby Downs man, 23, “spurred on by his mates to do a burn-out” pleaded guilty to misuse of a vehicle in court last week. The man described his actions as “an act of idiocy” and was fined $500 with court costs.

A 25-year-old Roxby Downs man who “showed no embarrassment” when police stopped him after he “spun out the back end of his car and lost control” pleaded guilty to driving without due care after an incident in December last year. Witnesses told police the man had “fishtailed” coming off Olympic Way on Pioneer drive. He was fined $200 with court costs.

A 36-year-old Roxby Downs man who was “giving it a little bit” as he passed police in Richardson Place, was disqualified from driving for 12 months after registering a blood alcohol level of 0.166 per cent.

The man was convicted of driving with an excess blood alcohol level and fined $830 with court costs.

A 28-year-old Roxby Downs man was convicted of driving with an excess blood alcohol level of 0.158 per cent and fined $700 with court costs after being stopped by a mobile random breathtesting unit in June this year. The man was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

A 42-year-old Roxby Downs man was disqualified from driving for six months and convicted of driving with an excess blood alcohol level. The driver was fined $500 with court costs after he registered a blood level of 0.084 per cent. The man told police “it was an error in my judgement – I didn’t think I’d be over the limit”.

A Roxby Downs man, 40, who “still felt upright” despite a blood alcohol level of 0.103 per cent was fined $500 after being stopped by a mobile random breath-testing unit.

The man was disqualified from driving for six months.

A 25-year-old Roxby Downs man who registered a blood alcohol level of 0.090 per cent when stopped by a mobile random breath-testing unit in June this year was fined $500 with court costs and disqualified from driving for six months.

In an unrelated incident, another Roxby Downs man, aged 26, was fined $700 with court costs and disqualified from driving for 12 months after pleading guilty to driving with an excess blood alcohol level. The man registered a blood alcohol level of 0.184 per cent after being stopped by a random breath-testing unit.

A 39-year-old Roxby Downs man was fined $250 with court costs and disqualified from driving for two days after being charged with driving unlicensed, in an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

A 21-year-old Roxby Downs man was convicted and fined $300 with court costs after pleading guilty to driving unlicensed in an unregistered, uninsured vehicle in April this year. The man was disqualified from driving for seven days.

Far North and Outback police report ROXBY DOWNS…A 17-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported on July 29, 2005, for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol and breaching the conditions of his probational license.

Also on July 29, in an unrelated incident, a 17-year-old Roxby Downs man was arrested for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

A report was received on July 28, from a Roxby Downs resident of the theft of property from a school bag.

Police received a report on July 28, from a Roxby Downs resident of property damage at the Roxby Downs Caravan Park.

A 38-year-old Roxby Downs man was arrested for indecent behavior in Roxby Downs on July 25.

Police received a report on July 25, from a Roxby Downs resident for the theft of a mobile phone.

A report of property damage was received from a Roxby Downs business on July 24, 2005. Approximately $1000 damage was received due to smashed windows and lights.

were smashed overnight on July 24, 2005. On the same night, about $1000 damage was also caused in the Roxby Downs Area School when a window, a glass door and two security lights were damaged.

A minor collision on Pioneer Drive near St Barbara’s Parish School on July 21 caused approximately $2500 to a car when it was forced to swerve to avoid a child on the road.

Roxby Downs Police, with assistance from the Pt Augusta CIB, Pt Augusta Crime Scene and Workplace Services were involved in investigating the fatality at the Olympic Dam Mine on July 19, 2005.

A written notice to abate excessive noise from a vehicle notice was issued to a 23-year-old Roxby Downs resident, on July 18, 2005, following a complaint about loud music coming from a vehicle near the Lions Park.

Also on July 18, 2005, a 16-year-old Roxby Downs youth was reported for driving while unlicenced.

Police located a small fire burning on an outdoor table out the front of the Roxby Downs Post Office on July 18. The fire was extinguished with only a small amount of damage being caused.

New face at the NAB CONNIE...The local community is invited to inspect the historic ‘super constellation’ close-up in Woomera next week.

Mobile base for RoxFM

Woomera to host historic aeroplane WOOMERA...Woomera will host one of Australia’s most historic passenger aeroplanes next week when the Lockheed Super Constellation – or ‘Connie’ – touches down at Woomera airfield on Thursday, August 11.

The community is invited to investigate Australia’s only flying ‘Connie’, described by Woomera Board spokesman Frank Woolfe as a product of “a time when air travel was at its most elegant”.

“We’re inviting all local residents to come up and see this aircraft,” Mr Woolfe told The Monitor.

“You’ll be able to wander through it for a gold coin donation.”

The VH-EAG ‘Southern Preservation’ - which will visit Woomera next week – is, in fact, the militarised version of Lockheed’s famous range of Constellation aircraft.

The Super Constellation revolutionised air travel in the 1940s and 1950s and was instrumental in Qantas opening up its international flight paths.

However, in the early 1980s, the once-magnificent aircraft was considered obsolete and of no further use and the ‘Southern Preservation’ was designated for scrap, with most of its engine accessories and instruments cannibalised for other aircraft.

Ironically, failure to re-seal the aeroplane after an inspection permitted legions of birds to nest and foul the interior over many years.

This, in turn, discouraged the scrap metal merchants from bidding on the aircraft due to the infestation of guano and the subsequent imperfections that it would cause in the smelting of the aluminium.

The aircraft was later identified as a possible restoration project in 1991 after a thorough survey was taken of the airframe.

A four-year restoration project by the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society on the ‘Connie’ - which was originally stored and practically forgotten in an Arizona airbase – comprised more than 16,000 volunteer man hours, around $800,000 in cash fundraising and another $1.2million in sponsorship services.

But, after nearly 18 years on the ground, the ‘Southern Preservation’ crossed the Pacific once more and found a new home in Australia where it now serves as a major tourism attraction for flight-fanciers.

The ‘Southern Preservation’ will fly into Woomera at around 11.30am on Thursday, August 11.

ROXBY DOWNS…The National Australia Bank (NAB) has welcomed a new face to the Roxby Downs branch with Johan Simon replacing long-time local Joanne Dillon as Branch Manager.

Ms Dillon will take maternity leave from the end of July until May 2006 and is being replaced by Johan, who has relocated from NSW to take on the role.

At the same time, the local NAB customer service team will welcome two additional staff in 2005.

The NAB branch has also recently undergone a refurbishment in a further sign of commitment to Roxby Downs’ growing population.

BROADCAST VAN...Local artist Dave Kovac is busy painting community radio station 105.5 RoxFM’s new mobile broadcast van. The van, funded by local businesses and sponsors, will allow RoxFM to broadcast from remote locations on special occasions and at major events.

While Joanne is sad to leave the NAB she is excited by the new challenges of starting a family. “I have been a part of the NAB for a long time, starting in 1990 in the Roxby Downs branch as an office junior, but I am excited about the new addition to our family and looking forward to raising my family in Roxby Downs,” Ms Dillon told The Monitor.

For Mr Simon, making the move from Newcastle on the NSW coast to Roxby Downs is a big one, with its own challenges.

NAB staff at Roxby Downs wished Ms Dillon the best of luck and look forward to meeting the newest member of the Roxby Downs community.

Local fitter completes apprenticeship OLYMPIC DAM…Investigations continue into the death of Roxby Downs resident Karl Eibl, 34, who was killed in an underground explosion at Olympic Dam on Tuesday, July 19. Mr Eibl, a member of the operation’s underground development crew, had worked at Olympic Dam for more than 10 years. No other persons were injured in the incident but the underground operations was evacuated until Thursday, July 21. This is the first fatality at Olympic Dam in seven years. FLINDERS RANGES…The Flinders Ranges Council will share in $1.2million of State Government funding for community revitalisation projects throughout the state. OUTBACK…State Member for Giles Lyn Breuer will push for Outback drivers to use headlights at all times, following a motion in the House of Assembly on July 7, 2005. Ms Breuer’s motion that the Minister for Transport take the recommendation to the Road Safety Advisory Council was passed and the local politician believes the move could save lives on SA roads. “I feel very passionate about this,” she told the House of Assembly. “I do more than 100,000km a year on the highways in my part of the sate and travelling to Adelaide,” she said. “This motion is the result of my observations, as a politician…and as a country person.” Ms Breuer told The Monitor “lights leave no doubt in the driver’s mind of what is ahead on the road, and rules out animals which are a major hazard on these roads”.

“Very little power is required for the safety measures, and the benefits far outweigh the cost. I will be following the process with the Road Safety Advisory Council very carefully and hope to get results soon.”

ROXBY DOWNS...Roxby Downs Area School will join a State Government student data transfer trial this month. The program is expected to help standardise systems to support students who move to a school in a different state. Trial schools will monitor and provide feedback on the process via a diary and questionnaire and report on what aspects work, and outline areas of difficulty.

The 22-year-old local, originally from Port Augusta, completed his Certificate III in mechanical engineering with WMC Resources and SDS at Olympic Dam. “In the past three and a half years I’ve learned how the whole [Olympic Dam] operations works.

“I’m glad it’s done now and I want to say on site and work.

“I’d tell other kids to give apprenticeships a go – have a crack at it, because all the hard work pays off at the end.”

Busy term for junior students Term 2 was once again a very busy term and many parents and families either attended or supported their children being involved in a number of events including Sports Days, Crazy Hair Day, Year 5 and 6 camps, assemblies, a visit from Crows players, performances and other events.

A big welcome to Miss Beth van der Hucht who joins our teaching staff as the new Reception teacher for the remainder of the year.

Also to Mr Matthew Schrodter, a pre-service teacher from James Cook University, who will be gaining some teaching experience in Miss Arthur’s Year 4 class for the first 2 weeks of the term.

Student Progress…All Year 3-6 students received formal written reports on the last day of Term 2.

It is important that these are read thoroughly and for parents to acknowledge their child’s successes and strengths and discuss and encourage areas for improvement.

Teachers put a considerable amount of effort into giving detailed and honest accounts of student progress and we hope parent’s value the reports and work closely with their children and teachers so each individual can achieve their potential.

Parent/Teacher interviews were held for all R-2 students in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 2.

Leapfrog Learners…This Literacy Intervention Program for identified Year 1 students is achieving great success and will continue this term with teacher Miss Sam Dalgety and SSO Mrs Ann Marie Stoltz.

Premiers Reading Challenge...Students involved in the Premier’s Reading Challenge should be close to completing the challenge of reading their 12 books.

The students in the Special Class are taking part in a cooking program.

This forms an important part of the students curriculum and provides invaluable life experiences for each student.

As a class the students prepare a shared lunch, which involves planning the ingredients, going shopping for the ingredients and then cooking the shared lunch.

They also work out how much each ingredient costs and calculate the total cost.

The students learn about hygiene and learn to clean up after themselves by washing the dishes and cleaning work areas.

So far we have made toasted sandwiches, Macaroni amd Cheese and Spaghetti Bolognese.

Safe guidelines for medicines at school DECS has guidelines in place for schools to ensure that students health needs are accommodated in the school setting.

If your child needs medication or has a health issue that the school supports, the following information needs to be considered.

• Schools can only store and supervise medication that has been prescribed by a doctor for the individual child, for the period of time specified.

• Medication must be in the original container in which it is dispensed and be clearly labelled. This might require the family to organise a second labelled container from the pharmacy for safe storage at home.

• All medications must have an accompanying Medication Plan signed by the doctor and parent/caregiver. This can be requested from the doctor. (The local doctors in Roxby Downs have copies of these forms).

• Analgesics and other medications which can be purchased over the counter without a prescription, should also be prescribed if staff members are to be asked to supervise their use.

• Medication is stored securely, by staff, in the First Aid Room.

• Self-Management of medication should be discussed with the doctor, student, parent/guardian and the school.

• A Health Care Plan from the doctor outlining specific information about medication and first aid procedures may be required for students with medical conditions. Check with your doctor if this is the case.

Safe management of health issues and medications in schools is important.

Roxby Downs Community Library will host a jam-packed week of fun activities and competitions for Book Week, from August 22 to 26.

This year’s theme ‘Reading Rocks in Roxby’ will see the library blossom with book and art displays, colouring competitions and even parades.

RDAS senior Home Economics classes will make rock cakes and rocky roads to sell on the day, in keeping with the theme.

Reception to Year 2s will host a teddy bear and soft toy parade to celebrate one of the shortlisted books.

ROXBY DOWNS COUNCIL NEWS

“The broadness of the Roxby Downs Community plan and particularly its community based management structure has met with high interest from across Australia from academics, local government and community development practioners,” according to Board facilitator Ray Goldie.

Mr Goldie was invited to deliver a paper on the Roxby Downs management structure at the recent Small Towns Conference held at Latrobe University in Bendigo Victoria last month.

“After the presentation I was approached by people representing State Government, local government and universities from Queensland, Victoria and other parts of South Australia for additional information,” Mr Goldie said.

“They have all requested to be kept informed of the plan’s progress.

“This interest is in addition to requests from ALCAN mining in Gove, Northern Territory, and USR consulting offices in Perth.”

“People have praised the process that was undertaken to develop the plan and the thoroughness of its implementation framework, but above all they are interested in what they see as an innovative management structure and its ability to generate such a high level on community engagement.

“This high level of interest is a further tribute to the work oF the Community Board and the level of input that has come from the community.

“You can be assured that Roxby Downs will be watched with high interest by many, not just because of the expansion of the mine, but because of the actions of its young progressive community.”

The plan at 100+ days The Community Plan was developed over a 20month period through scores of meetings and input from more than 400 people, producing more than 200 pages of documentation. Since the launch there has been another round of information evenings to facilitate the formation of the forums.

That’s a lot of talking and writing - but has there been any action since?

The very essence of the Community Plan and its accompanying implementation plan is action.

The key term of reference for every forum is the implementation of the plan. Another important factor for a number of the forums was to attract funding to support a project manager or coordinator.

The Monitor spoke to Board member Wendy Osborne and asked for an update on the progress of the plan so far and its objective of establishing project managers and coordinators.

“Naturally our first task has been to establish the proposed community management structure of Community Board, Forums and Partnerships” said Board member Wendy Osborne.

“To date we have held meetings for five of the forums with the last of these for Art and Culture on August 10.

“These meetings focussed on encouraging people to nominate for positions on the Board or Forums.

“The public responses have been excellent with more than 60 nominations received to date.

“While the establishment of the management structure has been the Board’s most visible activity we have been busily working behind the scenes instigating a number of initiatives which will ensure a smooth and fast transition for the new Board and a Forums.

“Working with the council we have already gained funding for two full time and two part time jobs for coordinators who will be responsible for activating the actions listed in the Community Plan.

“Other activities have included Board members and the facilitator progressing plans for the establishment of a Volunteer Resource Centre and the Welcome Program while a web based communications system has been designed for the Forums and Partnerships as has, a media plan, to ensure there will be regular reports to the wider community through our local media.

“Our main focus at the moment is still to establish all of the Forums and the new Board.

“When the new Board is in place the meetings with those who have expressed interest in the Partnerships will commence.

“The Board is delighted at the progress to date and we are already ahead of our target to have the management structure in place by September 30, 2005.”

Some of the achievements so far BRIEFINGS...Roxby Downs Council has briefed State Cabinet, a Government Minister and senior management on the Roxby Community Plan.

Meetings have been held with BHP management and transition team leaders to discuss how future engagement between the company and the Community Board will be undertaken.

Key stakeholders have been briefed on the plan and discussions have commenced on developing an effective means of engagement and partnership.

COMMUNICATION...The Roxby Dot Com webmaster has designed a system which provides easy access to all members of the Board, Forums and Partnerships to all minutes and information generated by each

group.

The wider community will also be able to access this site.

This system will allow the stakeholders of each group and the community to easily access and identify information of interest to them.

FORUM NOMINATIONS...

Seven information evenings to establish Forums have been held and more than 60 applications received.

BUSINESS SUPPORT... Council, with assistance from the Northern Regional Development Board (NRDB) has attracted funding for an Economic Development Officer to act as the Project Manager for the Business Sector.

This position is now active.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT... Council has agreed to create and fund a Community Development Officer position who would act as the Executive officer of the Community Board and supply clerical support.

The position was advertised and an experienced professional has been secured for the position.

The position will be active in one months time.

MEDIA PLAN…A plan to produce a fortnightly Community Information page in local, notfor-profit newspaper The Monitor and weekly updates on community radio station RoxFM has been developed.

In addition, regular special Community Features on key topics will be supported by The Monitor and RoxFM.

Born January 31, 1922 – Died July 10, 2005 HARRY BOSTON… Harry Boston, according to his family, was an ordinary man, a World War II veteran and a hard worker – but he was also particularly honest with a strong sense of wrong and right.

“Andamooka was a very special part of Dad’s life, and that is why we have brought him back to rest here,” Rick Boston told the almost 40 mourners who attended Harry Boston’s Andamooka burial and wake on Saturday, July 23.

“It was wonderful to see so many of his friends there to send him off properly,” Rick told The Monitor.

Born April 21, 1971 – Died July 19, 2005 KARL EIBL…Karl was born in Carlton, Victoria on April 21, 1971, to his parents Robert and Nanette Eibl.

Karl was the middle son with brothers John and Mark.

He grew up in Little River, Victoria, on a five acre property and attended Little River Primary School.

He later attended Corio North High School and in Year 12, Karl and Mandie first met.

They remained good friends for the next five years which developed into their loving relationship.

School holidays were often spent in California catching up with friends Umrao and Scott.

Karl moved to Roxby Downs in October 1993 and commenced work with Monadelphous Engineering as a storeman.

Karl and Mandie were engaged in February, 1994, and Karl worked in the ‘day gang’ before starting in the Refinery with WMC in March, 1994.

Mandie moved to Roxby Downs in April 1994.

In 1996, Karl and Mandie moved to Andamooka and around this time, Karl moved from the Refinery to the Mine at Olympic Dam, working with Underground Services. ‘ Karl worked as a truck driver and loader operator, before joining the development crew to further his skills.

On February 21, 1998, Mandie and Karl’s first son Nicholas was born in Geelong.

In January 1999, the family travelled extensively overseas for six weeks on their first family holiday.

In January 2000, the family

travelled overseas again, to visit family in Germany.

On December 21, 2000, Liam Christian joined the family.

Karl and Mandie were married on October 19, 2002, at West Beach.

Karl enjoyed opal mining, rock climbing, skiing, scuba diving, bike riding and spending time with his boys.

From Roxby Downs, the family made frequent visits to Adelaide and Geelong to catch up with family.

In January 2005, the family enjoyed their first overseas trip with two children, for eight weeks.

Karl served in the Army Reserves as a Commando based at the Williamstown Barracks in Victoria.

He was committed to the safety of his workmates and showed this through is active participation in the Mine Rescue Team.

On his days off, when he wasn’t mining at Olympic Dam, Karl loved to opal mine and had a love for the town of Andamooka, its people and its history.

“He was a dedicated employee and loved mining with a passion,” wife Mandie told The Monitor.

“WMC gave him the opportunity to follow his dreams by travelling overseas and providing security for his family.”

Karl Eibl died suddenly, at work, as a result of a tragic accident on July 19 2005.

He leaves behind his loving wife Mandie, and sons Nicoholas and Liam.

More than 400 people attended a memorial service for Karl in Andamooka on July 27, 2005.

The family offered a “heartfelt thankyou to everyone, for your love and support since the untimely death of our loving husband and daddy Karl”.

“If Karl was here he would be overwhelmed by the response of the community of which he was proud to be part of ,” Mandie said.

“While the future isn’t set, were content to be home in Roxby Downs for the moment,” she told The Monitor. “I just want to thank BHP Billiton - they couldn’t have done more for us since this happened.

“Karl loved his job underground - he had a passion for everything to do with mining and when he wasn’t at work underground at Olympic Dam he was at Andamooka digging for opal.”

DARTS…The Desert Rats top the ladder in Week 5 of the Roxby Downs Dart League winter season with 27 games won and eight points, ahead of Sharp Shooters with 33 wins and six points.

The RSL team brings up the rear with just seven games won and 0 points.

Highest Scores for last week’s round were; D Haines, C Lucas, S Bell, S Adams and, in the ladies, E Asplin – all on 200.

G Cundy took the men’s highest pegout with 136, while E Asplin scored a 62.

180 badges were awarded to D Haines, C Lucas, E Asplin, S Bell, K Napper and S Adams.

Junior high scores were won by M Netherton – 1310 and S Symons – 115.

Tough competition on dirt kart track DIRT KART RACING…At the Desert Dirt Kart Club’s July 23 race meeting, the racing was close once again with several Port Pirie racers joining the field on the day.

It was an eventful day - a few of the drivers blew motors, and sat on the side lines, other came to grief on the track and had to watch fellow competitors take the win.

A total of 22 karts competed in the event but the first race was stopped due to an accident with one of the junior drivers taken out for the day with an injured hand, however, he will be back next month.

The campdraft program will kick off at 11am with the Merty Merty Pastoral Company Junior Campdraft.

Other events will include the McLauclan Engineering Juvenile Campdraft; the William Creek Maiden Campdraft and the Lake Eyre Open Campdraft.

Bar and food services at campdraft grounds will close at 6pm, Friday evening, followed by live entertainment outside the William Creek Hotel until late.

The Bronco Branding program will start off at 9.30am on Saturday with the Landmark Singles Bronco Branding.

New look for young footballers JUNIOR FOOTBALL… Roxby Downs’ Hawks and Bulldogs hit the field in new uniforms last week following a donation of more than $2000 worth of new guernseys by accountant Paul Bartley of Unite Ac-

countants.

Roxby Downs’ Under 12 footballers have been playing in the same, tired uniforms for more than 15 years, according to the association’s treasurer Jill Koning.

“This donation has been

fantastic for the boys,” Jill Koning said.

“They feel a little more professional and they feel good in them.

“The other uniforms had numbers coming off them and were looking tatty.”

BOWLS...State Member for Giles Lyn Breuer presented a cheque for $55,000 to the Roxby Downs Bowls Club last week.

The grant comes as a result of funding from the Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program.

“This is a very significant contribution to the new bowling green,” club president Tony Jordan told The Monitor.

“The original green had lasted 16 years and was well and truly ready to be replaced.

“We’ve still got a fair bit of work to do but we expect to have some social bowling on the green by September, before the club’s corporate challenge on September 23.”

Breuer presented the cheque to the club on Thursday, July 28.

“I’m delighted to come and present this cheque – it’s one of the best parts of my job,” Breuer said.

“One of the things I really like about this club is the variety of age groups playing, from 10-year-olds to 65-year-olds.

“Bowls really isn’t just a game for seniors any more.

“That variety just highlights how important it is to support these facilities in small communities so that people, especially young people, get a chance to try new things.”

The Roxby Downs Bowling Club has plans for more improvements at the clubhouse, including an outdoor smoking area.

“We’ll also install some more shade and seating along three sides of the green,” club secretary Jim Bowden told The Monitor.

“It was fun and I kicked a few goals throughout the tournament,” Weaver told The Monitor.

“It was challenging to come up against so many new teams – you didn’t know what to expect on the field.”

The Northern Areas team played three games in Adelaide, winning them all, before being knocked out in the semifinals by Glenelg.

NETBALL...Roxby Downs netballer Teagan Coombes will represent SA in the U15 development squad next school holidays, following local success at the regional level.

Teagan Coombes, 15, is the first Roxby Downs resident to represent this age group at a state level for the SA Country Development Team.

The interstate Invitational Carnival will be held in Melbourne during the first week of the next school holidays.

Coombes was one of four local girls selected to represent the Spencer Gulf region - which reaches

from Whyalla to Port Augusta and Port Pirie, as well as up to Roxby Downs.

Coombes joined Aimee-Lee Elson, 17, Brianna Allen, 12, and 14-year-old Lorraine Girdham in the Spencer Gulf Regional Netball Carnival.

Both the 15 and Unders and 13 and Unders teams made the semi-finals at the carnival.

The 15 and Unders finished fourth out of eight teams, kncoked out in the semis by the South East Region Team. While the 13 and Unders finished third out of eight regions, losing the semi final to Eyre Region, who went on to win the carnival.
