Breuer supports crushing cars as a last resort One vehicle has been forfeited to the Court and sent to Adelaide for sale - will yours be next?
Hoon drivers be warned - your car means nothing to the authorities and they WILL crush it right in front of you!
R
oxby hoons be warned – you could lose your cars in the latest hoon driving crackdown. The Rann Government bolstered its arsenal in its war against hoon drivers by introducing laws to allow police to crush hoon cars. These new laws will also lift drag racing on the streets from a traffic offence to a criminal offence. Both the Member for Giles Lyn Breuer and Roxby Downs Police Sergeant Stuart Paxton support the need for stiffer penalties. In the past Roxby Downs and Andamooka have had their fair share of hoon drivers and drag racing and these new laws could see them coming under closer scrutiny. Lyn Breuer said, “This is a last resort method of trying to prevent accidents
and rat bag driving in young people and I support the move. “I think in a community like Roxby with a lot of young people it may help save lives. The town will certainly have sufficient police resources to manage the situation. “I’m sure after one or two cars are crushed, word will get around and prevent some young people from trying the same.” When asked what the figures for hoon driving were in the Roxby and Andamooka area Ms Breuer said, “I don’t have figures for the electorate as a whole and they would be misleading because some towns have a much higher incidence than others. “However, we are all very aware that road deaths are the biggest killer of young people and I have no qualms about supporting this measure.” In the past 12 months 18 vehicles
have been impounded/clamped by Roxby Downs Police under the Hoon Seizure legislation and from those, one vehicle has been forfeited by the Court and sent to Adelaide for sale. There was only one impounding for Andamooka for that period. Police Sergeant, Stuart Paxton told The Monitor, “As yet we have not received any update training to cover the new proposed legislation and SAPOL policy on future seizures, this should be covered in the next few weeks.” He said, “As for hoon driving, it is still prevalent in and around Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam, even though Police fully support the trial burn out comps at the Roxby Downs Speedway, incidents are increasing again. “It is also amazing the hostile comments from drivers in relation to Hoon Driving they generally comment that there are no areas for them to do their
wheelies!” He told The Monitor hoon drivers should think back on that, “it is against the law to misuse a vehicle that is driving in a hoon manner. You do not have a right to do wheelies.” He sent a strong message to drivers who do the wrong thing. “Motor vehicles are designed to safely transport people and cargo not HOON DRIVE--END OF STORY.” “If you want the speed and thrill of driving then build a speedway car or kart and drive accordingly on the race track or approved areas not public roads. For burnouts get behind the organisers that are trying to enlarge the burnout area at the Speedway and form a proper committee to achieve a suitable area for this behaviour,” Sgt. Paxton concluded. Premier Mike Rann says these reforms are thefirst to come from a work-
ing group set up last month to come up with sweeping changes to the State’s driving laws to further crackdown on these dangerous and reckless drivers. “These repeat offenders are hell bent on driving dangerously and engaging in anti-social behaviour,” Mr Rann says. “They give little or no thought to the safety of innocent road users or their own safety. “Our message is – if these hoons persist with their irresponsible behaviour, then we’ll crush what they value most - their cars. “Illegal street racing may give some drivers a quick rush, but their ‘dicing with death’ antics can have consequences lasting a lifetime and that’s why we want these drivers off our streets.”
