Greyhound comes to the rescue Greyhound Australia has come to the rescue of the South Australian economy by filling a void in the transport system and providing a new service to Roxby Downs as of July 31.

In a first for its South Australian services, Greyhound’s new route will provide daily runs to and from Roxby and Pimba on the Stuart Highway.

Chief Executive Officer, Robert Thomas, said the new route is a breakthrough for the company’s operations in the State.

“Greyhound has been able to offer this service following an agreement with the South Australian Government,” Mr Thomas said.

The new service has been set up in response to the cancellation of a route previously occupied by Premier Stateliner.

Commenting on the announcement Roxby District Council Administrator, Mr. Bill Boehm said, “This is fantastic news. Council is very pleased the powers that be have been able to make an alternative arrangement.

“We can look forward to a hopefully long partnership with Greyhound Australia. I think it is really good for this community as it was a much needed service and congratulations to all those involved in the negotiations,” he said.

John A. Piece once said; “Communication is not only the essence of being human, but also a vital property of life”.

Meaning, where on earth would we be without the ability to communicate?

No doubt we would all agree communication is an essential aspect of life. But! How many of us realise, that the WAY we communicate, can actually determine the quality of our life. And! How many of us realize that the way we communicate can also determine the quality of our relationships.

I ask these two questions because our communication can either build relationships…or pull them apart.

According to the late (American author) Dale Carnegie, there are four ways, and only four ways, in which we verbally communicate with others. What’s more he said: “We are evaluated and classified by these four ways. The four ways are; what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it”.

In other words, it doesn’t matter who we are or what we do for a living…it’s what we do, how we look, what we say and how we say it that will determine the success of our communication and the quality of our relationships.

In a nut shell, communication is best described as a two way process between a sender of information, and the receiver of the information. Good verbal communication is when we have been able to effectively deliver what we wanted to say which was effectively received. As a result, effective communication can help create or maintain good relationships whereas poor communication, (that is, when we have failed one or more of the four ways) can often result in poor relationships.

One of the best communicators I have ever met was the

owner of our local music store where I grew up. Keith was an amazing person whom everyone respected and was fond of.

Regardless of your age or who you were; Keith always showed great interest in you and in what you were saying…you could feel the respect he had for you. Not only was it a pleasure to go into Keith’s music shop but it was a very successful business that subsequently became a popular meeting place for us teenagers.

One of the worst communicators I have ever met was a “leader” whose body language, facial expression, listening and delivery skills were appalling. This person thinks they are successful but the reality is…this person is not liked or respected and consequently doesn’t enjoy good healthy relationships.

Remember, effective communication is pivotal to building and maintaining lasting working relationships. Or, to put it another way, the success of our communication can determine how our relationship will be with our spouse, children, family, friends, employer, employees, work colleagues, neighbours, those who regularly serve us in shops, café’s, pubs, clubs, those whom we teach, play sport with and everyone else whom we come in contact with.

I said; “Communication is a skill you can learn. It’s like riding a bicycle or typing. If you’re willing to work at it, you can rapidly improve the quality of every part of your life”.

Meaning, it’s never too late to improve how we relate.

How well do you communicate? Whilst you think about the answer; keep in mind that most of our relationship issues, or work related problems, can be traced to poor communication. But! It’s within our power…to do what we can to reverse them.

Plans in hand for annual Opal Festival The annual Andamooka Opal Festival will go ahead as planned on the October long weekend.

One of the main event of the activities will be the Outback Karaoke Idol competition when it is expected people from all over the Upper North will get into the fun spirit of the event.

The APOMA barbecue will be held on Friday night, costume ball on Saturday night and the Opal Hotel’s Oktopalfest and

Karaoke competition onSunday.

Chairman of the Andamooka Progress Association, Mr. Peter Allen said they are still looking for event ideas and he would welcome any suggestions, events like the wheelbarrow race, market stalls and treasure hunt for children and even suggested a soap box derby.

Leading Adelaide band the Lady Killers will play at the major functions on the fun filled weekend.

If an artist is allowed to have a particular favourite piece of work, this classic Greek Godess is among Julianna Horvath’s best.

Lifetime of work on display Former Andamooka resident of 50 years, Julianna Horvarth returned to the area last Friday night for the opening of her first Petro Art exhibition in the Precinct Gallery at the Roxby Liesure Centre.

Julianna’s exhibition features over 70 of her intricate opal inlaid paintings on both glass and wood and represents almost a lifetime of work.

The modest artist told The Monitor that she had been painting since her brother gave her a oil paint set when she was 8 years old, back in her native country of Hungary. From that time she has loved art and works in all mediums, oils, petro, wood carvings and more.

said at the opening night, “All my life I have seen this intricate artwork and I said to Mum it’s about time you let other people know how beautiful they are, and don’t lock them up.

“Mum’s still got the skills and is still doing such fine work at the age of 72 and without glasses.”

Julianna Horvarth is said the be the first person in the world to use opal in this artform and has led the way for others to follow. She said that some of her pieces can take up to eight months to complete.

The exhibition will be at the centre until August 17 and is well worth a visit to see the fine work of this extremely talented “local” artist.

Community Board report “inaccurate”

ontrary to a report published last week the Roxby Community Board and other forums are not “in shambles” and the Executive Officer is calling for a retraction and apology.

Michelle Hales has written to the newspaper concerned stating, “As Executive Officer of the Board I attended this meeting and took part in the discussions. The article that was published contained many inaccuracies and on behalf of the Board I request an immediate retraction and apology.”

She said that the Community Board and its associated forums/partnerships continue to enjoy good public support and reports of this nature only serve to undermine the excellent work being done by these volunteers and polarise a committed and united community.

“Fifty nine people attended meetings in July. This is superb considering it is the middle of winter and there are many people who are sick or who have sick children.”

Ms Hales said, “Much of the business of the forums/ partnerships

happens on a daily basis with regular interaction in person and via email amongst members. Forum meetings are not required to have a quorum.

This ensures continuity of discussions and projects.”

Ms Hales was also dismayed by comments in the report that “Both the Arts and Culture Forum and the Family and Youth Forums had not achieved quorums this month”. She pointed out that a number of forums are quarterly and not monthly meetings as the report allegedly inaccurately indicated.

In another claim that there was no BHP Billiton representative at the Community Board Forum has also been denied by Ms Hales who said, “A representative from BHP Billiton has attended every meeting of the Board (including the July meeting) since its inception in 2005. These people hold senior positions within the company and we appreciate BHP Billiton’s commitment of providing a representative at every meeting.”

She said there were so many inaccuracies in the published report and they need to be corrected.

“The previous Chairperson of the Board signalled his intention to resign from the Board at the June

meeting but indicated that he would finalise work in progress before doing so. This resignation does not take affect until a formal letter of resignation is received which is due soon.

The Board was fully aware of this. An acting Chairperson is in place until the permanent appointment is made at the August meeting.

“There has been a reduction in minute taking services provided by Council to the Board and three of the forums. The other five forums have been operating with their own minute takers for two years. At the meeting the Board was proactive in managing this change with the Board representatives offering to take over the minute taking of the three forums concerned. A Board member also volunteered to take the minutes of Community Board meetings,” said Ms Hales.

“All members of the Community Board and associated forums/partnerships are volunteers and should be supported by our local media. They should be congratulated on their efforts particularly the amount of personal time they donate, their energy and enthusiasm and the fantastic projects they have developed that have benefited this community.”

Last week, the Roxby Downs Community site – www.roxbydowns.com –phase one was completed and now work has commenced on an information site.

Since February this year Justine Brouns, Web Coordinator, has been developing the contents of Roxby Downs Community web site.

“First of all the Roxby Downs Council, Ray Goldie and a web team created a concept for the site. Graphic artists put in a visual presentation and the Web Development team gave it a format. And finally, as a Web Coordinator, I was in charge of all the contents of the site,” Justine said.

The modern, stylish and really easy to navigate website has information about living, working and visiting Roxby.

You will find information of local stores, clubs, health services, accommodation, activities, recruitment agencies, events, tours and much more.

“I have contacted hundreds of different sources asking for information to be included on the site. We wanted to do a useful site for people who live here and for those who want to come. We have completed the first phase so the site is available to everyone,” she said.

Justine will also be in charge of updating the site.

“I am going for my ninth year in Roxby.

I think that my knowledge of the town is really helpful for the development of this project,” she said.

“We are looking for the community to supply us with information and corrections if they are necessary,” Justine said.

Eventually, there will be another three sites that are currently under construction: The Council site, Roxby Leisure site and The Monitor site.

lmost all domestic and commercial waste products are collected in Roxby Downs including non refundable plastic items which previously was disposed of in landfill.

Roxby Council has negotiated with BSH Waste Solutions to collect plastics and anyone can make deliveries to the Gosse Street depot.

BSH manager, Mr. Kevin Robinson when responding to questions about collection of waste products said they are geared up to collect most products and as announced at the end of May this year now have a deal with Adelaide company Advanced Plastic Recycling to take all plastic waste from Roxby Downs.

Inside this edition there is a story about what recycled plastic is being used for right here in the town and according to Mr. Robinson it is amazing to see this waste now being put to good practical use.

Mr. Robinson told The Monitor all other waste like non recyclable glass bottles, jars, cardboard and paper are taken in at the Depot.

BSH Waste Solutions also has the contract for the local landfill site for the Roxby Downs Council and Mr. Robinson said

“Green waste is piled up and gets mulched for use by the council, but is also available for anyone from this town to use in their

gardens,” he said.

Roxby Downs is very well catered for when it comes to the collection of recyclable waste and even though there is no kerbside collection in place at the moment there is a strong move away from sending a lot of items into landfill.

and electrical products, batteries, car parts etc., while the council office will take old mobile phones.

Speaking on behalf of the Roxby Downs Council, Municipal Works Manager Mr. Peter Keller said that kerbside collection of recyclable material is the ideal situation to prevent items from ending up in landfill,

but there is a high cost associated with such a move and that needs to be factored into expected large increases in costs to manage the Opal Road landfill.

He said it is not only the cost of collection and the added cost of more bins for each household, but then comes the cost of establishing a transfer station and the employment of staff to man the station.

Council is certainly not ruling out the move to kerbside recycling and depending on EPA regulations in the future may have to follow that line, like all other councils across the state.

In the mean time Mr. Keller said Roxby is well served to recycle as much waste as possible through BSH and also groups like the Scouts who collect paper, cardboard and bottles as major fundraisers.

Ted loves life in Andamooka

Everyone is welcome to attend but voting is restricted to members only who will be entitled to one vote.

e e t Te d J o n e s , Andamooka’s oldest resident and a very private and modest man.

The 93 year old former farmer and miner still vividly remembers his arrival at Andamooka back in 1965 and now 50 years on loves the place so much he could not entertain the thought of moving.

Howard Jones, better known as Ted Jones to his friends and family, talks openly about his past and history in Andamooka. to our guest writer, Krystle Bower.

After only just celebrating his birthday in June, Ted still drives a car and prides himself on being fiercely independent.

When spoken to about being able to drive at his age Ted commented, “Yes, no problem at all, after all I have been driving for 75-years.”

Ted Jones first moved to Andamooka in 1965, he had just sold his farm and didn’t want to move to the city. He met Jim Shaw and Dick Clark who convinced him to move to Andamooka for a while.

Ted remembers to this day making that 12-hour drive

from Pimba to Andamooka on the old dirt track. “I was driving a car towing a caravan, and we had two inches of rain that night…” he recalls. “The road was like a canal,” he adds, “I was pushing a Volkswagen in front of me, because it was floating on the water, but that was typical of the way we lived in those days.”

Ted’s wife Doreen accompanied him when he made the trip to Andamooka, and admits that they both fell in love with the small town, saying it didn’t take long for them to establish a life there. Doreen has since passed away, however Ted continues to live in the small town 30km from Roxby Downs.

He told The Monitor about the many things they did when they first moved to Andamooka, which included bush walking.

using no more than a pick and shovel. “I like the way we used to come home from work,” Ted commented, remembering the people he went opal mining with.. “We would all sit down with a carton of beer, we were always welcome with a carton of beer.”

He now lives a quiet life in Andamooka by himself, and since developing an industrial hearing problem, admits he likes to stay in the background, rather than involve himself in community activities. He does, however, enjoy going to the local pub on Friday and Saturday nights for a meal.

Regardless of his age, Ted said, “Actually I don’t feel 90, I feel about 75” quickly adding with a laugh. “I have slowed down a bit..”

Speaking admirably of Andamooka Ted said, “We all get on together.” Ted made a special mention of the girls at the Hospital and Community Aid, saying that they have been very helpful.

This dapper and spritely man for his age, has enjoyed living in Andamooka over the years, and has no desire to leave any time soon.

APOMA MEMBERSHIP – If you wish to become members of Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association, you can join at the office in the Community Hall. Fees are $55 Family, $33 Single and $17.50 for Pensioners. Membership entitles you to vote at the Annual General Meeting in August and to attend, free of charge, the BBQ’s held throughout the year.

Planning SA Building Inspector, John Paynter, will be in Andamooka on August 25-27 and will meet with any residents who have concerns following their recent correspondence from his department.

It is hoped that SA Health will also be in attendance to address similar concerns.

CareerSpeak Exciting, yet scary future for kids

rowing up is often a daunting thought, yet the youth of Roxby Downs Area School certainly has a great deal of support when it comes to future careers.

Students will be granted the opportunity to listen to a collection of guest speakers for the upcoming CareerSpeak, a forum designed to give information on a range of possible career pathways.

The Monitor caught up with Year 12 students Liz Beever and Daniel Espinoza and asked them their thoughts on Career Speak and their plans for the next stages of life.

“I want to take a year off and travel and then join the police force, either here or interstate,” said Liz. “It’s exciting, the thought of getting out into the work force but it’s also scary too with all the responsibilities like paying bills.”

Liz seems to have her future planned out; however, Daniel, like so many students his age, is unsure of what the future holds for him.

One possible career Daniel has considered, however, revolves around the field of animation, particularly Manga (Japanese drawing).

Unfortunately, CareerSpeak will not

feature any Manga artists and therefore Daniel believes the forum will offer little for him.

“They need things that grab attention, and if I’m not interested in what they have, my attention will be elsewhere,” Daniel told The Monitor.

Liz, on the other hand, believes the forum will provide much needed information for students and eagerly awaits hearing from BHP Billiton representatives.

While Liz is adamant about joining the police force, she is also keeping an open mind, particularly concerning the mine.

“I love this town and working here would definitely be an option,” said Liz. The forum will offer an opportunity for students to learn not only of jobs available at the mine but also in a range of areas that are obtainable to people.

A highlight of CareerSpeak for Liz and Daniel will be hearing speakers of radio station SAFM. “I studied radio at school and it was fun, so hearing from SAFM will be interesting; definitely a career I’d look into,” commented Daniel.

Liz, too, was eager to learn more of the radio industry.

“It’s good to see something different, let people know there is more out there than the mine.

“These forums need to cater to all interests and show all the different opportunities available to people to help in

deciding on a suitable career.”

When asked the sorts of occupations Liz would enjoy learning of, she commented on careers such as medicine, emergency services and even society’s wealthier citizens would make for interesting speakers.

Liz was also adamant at the need to hear from people with a closer connection toward the students.

“Hearing from people at Uni would be excellent, since a lot of us are nervous about going and listening to students would ease a lot of fears.”

And for those not interested in University, Liz believes a greater work education program, perhaps as a year 12 subject, would allow people to increase their knowledge of the working world and gain a greater perspective on possible future careers.

Daniel is also of the same mind, desiring a more practical direction to career expos instead of the simple “sit and listen” approach.

“Most of the speakers I’ve seen in the past were unenthusiastic and offered no interaction for students, so it was just like sitting in class, which can be very boring,” said Daniel.

“Work experience is needed, where students can go out and see exactly what these speakers do; that way, people can see first hand what is involved and whether or not they enjoying the job.”

Liz Beever is one student that seems to have a career path mapped out, others are not so certain about what lays ahead.

sidered geology as a career until trying to choose what to study at university. While deliberating a friend said ‘You’ve always liked rocks, why don’t you do geology?’

So I did,” Sarah said.

In January 2005 Sarah commenced work as a Mine Geologist at Olympic Dam and after two years she was promoted to Project Geologist. “Being a Mine Geologist was a fantastic starting off point and a great learning platform,” she said.

“The job is so versatile and involves office work as well as being outside in the field and interacting with lots of people,” She loves the fact that her job gives her the opportunity to travel. “I have visited New Zealand, Tasmania, Western NSW and Queensland.”

At BHP Billiton Olympic Dam, “We have a great close-knit team and the friendly work environment. That is one of the best aspects of my job,” Sarah said.

Krista Sutton is originally from Canada. She completed four years Bachelor of Science with Honours in Earth Sciences degree at Halifax University, Nova Scotia, Canada.

“After high school in Ontario, Canada I looked into a degree program that would be scientifically stimulating and that would of-

fer lots of opportunities to be outdoors and to travel.

Geology fits those requirements,” Krista said.

Krista started working during her degree over the summers in Timmins, Ontario learning about the gold mining industry

in Canada. She worked with Placer Dome Ltd at Porcupine Joint Venture as a Mine Geologist in a very large open pit operation and with St. Andrews Goldfields in a small underground mine with a small team of professionals.

December 2007 she started working at Olympic Dam as Mine Area Geologist.

“I love that I can work anywhere I want in the world, and the fact that there are so many diverse areas to focus on, whether it be marine geology, geo-

When Krista finished the university on April 2007, she and Samuel, her partner, decided to come to Australia to take advantage of the mining boom and in

physics, geochemistry, hydrogeology, vulcanology, mineralogy, or paleontology.

“Geology is an everchanging science that explores rock mechanisms and characteristics and can take you where ever you choose, even the Moon or Mars!” Krista said.

The Municipal Works Office of the Roxby Downs Council is working on a new project to recycle plastic.

In the past weeks new recycled plastic tables were installed in Richardson Place, thanks to the work of Peter Keller, Municipal Works Manager, and Graham Ferris, Municipal Works Officer.

“We are working on a project to make possible the recycling of household, commercial and industrial plastics waste.

We have found a company in Adelaide, Advanced Plastic Recycling, who developed the process, so all plastics waste could be recycled into viable products. We also have the transport to take the plastic to Adelaide, and rubbish bins to collect the plastic at the back of the council office. We have to manage the way the domestic plastic comes into the process in a suitable way,” Graham Ferris said.

“The cost of recycled plastic is comparable to wood, but it is environmentally friendly. We don’t have to cut trees to do it, the plastic is already there,” he said.

“It is virtually maintenance free, easily moulded into required shapes, really flexible and lightweight” Mr Keller said.

“The recycled plastic can be

cut, drilled, nailed, screwed, bolted, stapled as wood,” added Mr Ferris.

“The recycled plastic products are really strong, but they will have to be tested with time,” said Mr Keller.

The process seems to be very simple, but that is because APR invested $8 million into research and equipment.

The mixed plastics are granulated and turned into agglomerate, then heated and pumped or pressure filled into a mould and cooled to finish.

There are basically no emissions into the atmosphere in the whole development and the process is safe because of low energy use - as the heat used is basically generated by friction. Some of the products that can be made with the recycled plastic are useful for industry, aquaculture, agriculture, manufacturing, mining and infrastructure – as wharf beams, retaining walls, parking lot stops, fence posts, sound barriers, septic tanks, highway guide posts, pipe supports, electric power poles, outdoor furniture, among others.

“Ninety-five per cent of the final product is plastic and the other 5% is the secret of the company,” Mr Keller said.

“It’s not that we are stopping use of other materials, but rather opening up an environmentally friendly opportunity,” he said.

Jewellery half price sale – a bit hit with Roxby The Hourglass Jewellery Store had a successful Half Price Birthday Sale on Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th July.

Teresa and Leigh Malcolm, the store’s owners for the past 12 months, came up with this idea because they wanted to introduce new items to the store.

They opened the front door of the store at 9am on Thursday and during the first hour they counted 53 people in the store at the same time.

Hundreds of people visited Hourglass Jeweller on those days. “It was really crazy, we had so many people in the shop,” Leigh said.

Teresa and Leigh Malcolm had to close nearer 9pm on Thursday because people were still arriving. The sale exceeded their expectations, not only on jewels, also in gifts. “It was a success because we were well supported by the town,” Leigh said.

The next few months will be quiet for the store. “This sale gives us a chance to go away and buy new things for the store to be re-stocked in time for Christmas,” said Leigh.

The 3 day sale also had a draw and Kristy Berraman was the winner of the Jag watch.

State Guide Commissioner visits On July 28, the Andamooka Opal Girl Guides had a special visit from Margie Berlemon the State Commissioner of the Girl Guides, who came up from Adelaide.

The girls had a great night making dilly bags (small bags to put cutlery in for use at camps) with help from the State Commissioner.

Many thanks go to all the leaders for organising it and to Margie for coming all the way up here.

Abandoned and Illegally Parked Vehicles The Roxby Downs Council is concerned with the number of vehicles including, trailers and caravans which have been either parked or abandoned on the road edge, as well as on the council verge between the road and the property boundary. Parking illegally in Richardson Place is also a concern. Council in the first instance will target the owners of the offending vehicles by issuing written warnings to the owners detailing what charges could be implemented if the vehicle is not moved or parked correctly. Areas to be targeted are a follows: · Parking in disabled zones without a permit. · Parking in the bus zone opposite Richardson Place. · Parking near pedestrian crossing to drop off and pick up school children. · Freight vehicles parked near pedestrian crossings to pick up and deliver goods. · Parking on the boundary between residence and road. · Leaving vehicles including Trailers and Caravans on roads for over 24 hours. · Parallel parking – the driver must position the vehicle to face in the direction in which vehicles could lawfully travel on that part of the road If the offending vehicle is not removed or parked correctly, under the Local Government Act, Council has the power to instigate infringement Notices and/or impound the vehicles for the noted offence. Please consider others in the Roxby Downs area and for safety reasons as well as appearance of the community, please park correctly.

Parking Residents should be aware of significant expiation fees for parking in a bus zone $79.00 and parking in a disabled zone $235. Other fines are stopping in

loading zone $33, failing to park on road $33 (except in median strip parking area) in accordance with rule- parallel parking and failing to park vehicle wholly within parking bay $20.

Robertson’s Rambles Under your nose…

Sometimes we go through our days thinking of what we don’t have or what we have not achieved.

Some people move from one place to the next in search of the windfall that will send them into early retirement and supposed bliss.

The never-ending quest for happiness and lifelong satisfaction can often result in blindness. This loss of sight disables one from seeing the paradise that is in the palm of our hands.

I recently received an email from a friend which included a story of a farmer who lived in South Africa. He had heard of the abundance of diamonds on the African continent and in haste to find his fortune, he sold his farm and departed to embark upon his exploration.

This farmer hunted across the African continent in pursuit of happiness that he only thought possible if he found diamonds and as such, financial wealth.

He spent years moving around, counting his diminishing pennies, hunting far and wide to fulfil his dream, but it was all in vain. The man was shattered by his failings and took his life by jumping into a river.

The gentleman who bought the farm, went by the name Schalk van Niekerk and in 1866, he encountered an unusual stone from his property. His curiosity drove him to send it away for further examination.

When William G. Athertone inspected the stone, he found that it was, in fact, a diamond.

Garrad & Co. of London later confirmed that the stone was a 21.25 carat brownish yellow diamond.

Today the farm is known as the “Kimberley Diamond Mine”, the largest of its kind in the world.

The original farmer had sold a property that was littered with diamonds. He left to search for happiness and fortune and found poverty and depression.

Had he stopped and looked more closely at his initial circumstances, he would have realised that gallivanting across the continent was unnecessary. What he searched for was right in his backyard, literally.

Every so often, we need an intermission in our lives to look more closely at our immediate surroundings; we are all standing in our own little field of diamonds.

Wealth does not necessarily mean money. The richest people in the world may not be the happiest people in the world. Although they may have the greatest car, the best set of prosthetic breasts or the biggest house, their smiles are not always convincing.

It is the smiles on the young children who live in poverty that convince me. They know life in its purest form. They know raw happiness despite hardship. They have something that the wealthiest person cannot buy; the appreciation of life.

By stopping and appreciating our surroundings we can add the most valuable asset to our fortune: pure happiness.

Opportunity does not just come along – it is there all the time – we just have to see it.

Bikinis and board-shorts are only a few short months away. If you feel yourself cringe at the thought of such apparel then now is the time to start doing something about it! Be sure to drink up to 2 Litres of water every day, consume plenty of fruit and vegetables and limit junk food intake. Tips to always remember before starting any exercise: · Engage abdominal muscles - switch the inner abdominal muscles on, which helps the body balance and establish the correct posture. · Always keep your body in line – be sure that your feet, knees, hips, shoulder and head are facing forward. · Use correct breathing techniques – breathing out on the extraneous part of the exercise (the hard part) · Always warm up the muscles that are to be targeted when using weighted exercises. Never use weights on cold muscles!!! · Always stretch after a workout – this releases lactic acid in the muscles and aids in recovery. It will also improve flexibility if done on a continued and regular basis.

Olympic Sports Day for local school children Local school children will experience the Olympics spirit for themselves at the BHP Billiton Olympics Sports Day next Friday, August 15.

As part of BHP Billiton’s sponsorship of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and in recognition of the ongoing support from the communities in our region over the past 20 years, students from the four local schools – Roxby Downs Area School, St Barbara’s Parish School, Woomera Area School and Andamooka Primary School – have been invited to participate in the sports day.

BHP Billiton is the Official Diversified Minerals and Medals Sponsor for the Beijing Olympics and has provided raw materials to make in excess of 6,000 medals for Olympic and Paralympic athletes and in excess of 51,000 commemorative medals for volunteers and officials.

Our local event will commence at the Roxby Downs town oval at 10am on Friday August 15 and include

a Parade of Nations, Torch Relay and speeches from Olympics Ambassador Kyle Vander Kyup and Olympic Dam representatives.

Olympic hurdler Kyle visited Roxby Downs for last year’s Family Day and is looking forward to visiting again and coaching and inspiring our future athletes.

Participants will join in a range of sports activities all run by qualified BHP Billiton Olympics events coaches.

A healthy lunch will be provided to students and the day will finish with each student receiving an Olympics gift pack.

Family members are invited to come down and join in the excitement of the day.

BHP Billiton is also celebrating the Olympic Games in Adelaide with an official Olympics Live Site in Elder Park from August 8 to 24. This free community event features a super screen broadcasting life coverage of all the action from Beijing in a relaxed, family-friendly setting.

Senior Netball the best in years

By Delinda Cuthbert With the final series looming and only one game remaining, Green Devils have taken the outright lead in the A1 competition, now clear by two points to Miners 1 and Hornridge 1 both on equal points, Miners edging in front of Hornridge by a small percentage margin.

Green Devils take on A2 side Yellow Devils this week and one could assume that this game should be a win to the more experienced Green Devils. A win would ensure the Green Devils a berth in the semi finals to be played on the 15th August at 8pm. The opposition yet to be determined by this week’s finale between Hornridge 1 and Miners 1, this game scheduled for 6.30pm on court one is sure to be a sizzler to watch.

Support in the past has been in favour of Miners with their many fans who come out each week to cheer their side on, however Hornridge also with a large following, let’s hope they too can gather their troops to rally for them.

The A2 competition still with the dominant Hornridge 2 side holding the lead with 10 points over Yellow Devils and then Miners 2. The table for the A2 competition will not change between now and the finals, Hornridge outright leaders.

The B Grade competition could still see a result change between current leaders OD Devils and Andamooka. Both teams are now clear of third placed Hornridge 3 by 4 points and fourth placed Miners 3, however the minor premiers will be determined after this week’s showdown between Andamooka and OD Devils at 8pm on court two.

Our Friday night games provided some good viewing: Green Devils win

over Hornridge 1 was not an easy feat, Hornridge attacked early whilst Devils were slow to get started.

Melissa Tucker found her form in the wing attack position; Tucker combined with the attacking Hayley Summerton assisted their team in finishing the first term well leaving Hornridge out in front by only 1 goal at the break. Neither team showing any flare until the second quarter when Green Devils came out determined, this was evident from one end of the court to the other. Hornridge who during the first quarter applied enormous defensive pressure were all of sudden themselves unable to move the ball forward through the strong opposition and tight defence. The ball was turned over on many occasions the Devils players throwing everything at the Hornridge team. The result at the main break in favour of Devils by 8 goals.

The third quarter again was considerably even; Hornridge tightening in the attack and also in the defensive circle, however still unsettled were again beaten by 2 goals during the term.

The fourth quarter was a far different game for both teams, Devils quite possibly tired from such an intense game started to make some unforced errors whilst Hornridge were stabilised by centre court player Meg Elliot. Elliot was the voice controlling the Hornridge team and was instrumental in Hornridge regaining some control over the game. Hornridge able to peg back some of the lost ground but the final result in favour of Green Devils 51 to Hornridge 46.

Miners 1 were successful over Hornridge 2 on Friday night. The Hornridge side produced a close competitive match for the stronger A1 side, Miners victorious by only 15 goals.

Miners with a considerably depleted line-up with

the bare 7 fought out the match against a 9 strong Hornridge 2. Hornridge improving as the game progressed were able to match their opposition in the final term, however the margin was out of reach the game lost in the earlier stages. Vicky Peters was consistent in centre for the Miners, as was Regina Qualmann also in the centre for Hornridge. The pair provided a good tussle throughout the game, both having moments of success running through the centre court providing many opportunities offensively and defensively for their respective teams. The win for Miners improving their percentage, lifts them into second place on the ladder above Hornridge 1 by only 2.53%. The final result Miners 1, 43 defeated Hornridge 2, 28.

Yellow Devils and Miners 2 had a close fought match on Friday night Miners falling short by only 3 goals.

Miners who have been so close many times throughout the season have yet to post a win. The Miners good form unfortunately coming late in the season to look like posting a win in the minor rounds, but who knows what could happen from here. Teams produce their best or worst in finals, so look out to Miners opposition, they could still be a threat. Yellow Devils and Miners commenced the game with a low scoring first quarter, only 13 goals scored between them.

Miners found their feet during the second quarter and outscored the Yellow Devils by 6 goals giving them a 2-goal lead at the main break. The second quarter the only winning term for Miners who from the break were unable to maintain momentum and went down in the final half, Yellow Devils eventual winners 33 over Miners 2, 30.

She said they usually plan three at the beginning of the season and three at the end, but due to the heatwave conditions earlier in the year they were unable to get out and all the clinics had to be held at the end of the season.

“That meant a few of the girls were called up for National commitments and were unable to travel to Roxby, but it was good we were able to get assistance from the SASI girls.”

Ms Westgate said the ANZ Development Clincis travel all over the State and she said while the Roxby Clinic was further away and therefore the most expensive, it was the most hospitable of all.

As you would expect the leaders of the competition OD Devils and Andamooka were both successful, however these wins would certainly not have been predicted based on history, all of the teams have defeated one another throughout the 2008 season. OD Devils and Andamooka perhaps playing the right combination on the night found the determination and will to win.

OD Devils smashing win over Hornridge 3 on Friday was just what the team needed; a boost of their confidence, necessary for preparation for the finals in 10 days time.

Hornridge and OD Devils both with up to 10 regular players listed were unable to fill the required seven to take the court and found it necessary to use fill in players. Junior Jess Reid had her eye on target shooting well for the Devils, and was obviously one of the best on court. Whilst working hard in the defensive circle attempting to thwart the opposition was Dearne Mason of Hornridge. Hornridge with some changes at the 3rd break found some form and matched the Devils with 11 goals apiece, however all too late. The end result an easy victory to the Devils, 50 goals to Hornridge 3, 26.

Andamooka and Miners 3 had a good battle the game changing lead on several occasions.

An intense match, players exhausted with no substitute for rest, each player soldiering on to the final whistle. A result in favour of the more experienced Andamooka team who improved as the game progressed. Andamooka’s’ shooting accuracy quite possibly the winning difference, unfortunately for the younger Miners this was the eventual let down for the side, scoring only 3 goals in the final term.

Sarah Lynch making an obvious impression on the game was responsible for the fourth quarter defeat.

lympic Dam strengthened its favouritism for the 2008 premiership flag after a comprehensive victory over arch rivals Roxby Districts, in what was billed as the preview of the grand final.

Played in perfect conditions and before a disappointing crowd to begin with, the teams went head to head with nothing much between them in the first quarter, both making fundamental ball handling errors and shots on goal in such good conditions were poor.

It took OD almost the first half to open up any lead and by the long break went into the change rooms with a 14 point buffer.

Roxby Districts claims the OD boys were backing away from the hard ball gets were exposed in what they say is the premiership quarter.

OD came out with far more purpose, got numbers behind the ball and ran amok, kicking six goals, while Roxby lumbered to score just the one.

The RD Miners were blown away in the mid field and in a master move for most of the term, coach Les Myles dropped Ormond-Allen back to patrol the half back line.

This move went unchallenged and Craig Paull must be regretting his decision to allow OD to control the lines. Ormond-Allen took saving marks time after time and the Roosters just couldn’t get close enough to goals to worry the scoreboard attendants.

As OD continued to punish the Miners, it became something of a training drill moving the ball forward with precision, scoring too easily and turning the screws tighter and tighter preventing any possible comeback by the Roosters.

The last quarter was more of the same and while it was a big loss for the Miners there were some valuable lessons to be learned - none the least that players have to be more accountable when the ball is in their area and that no team can allow players of the calibre of Ormond-Allen to roam free.

OD had some superb players, and none better than Daniel Rogers with a best on ground performance. His speed, use of the body and overhead marking strength for a small on-baller were sublime and every time he got near the ball he lifted the momentum for OD. Cam Green chipped in with another honest performance, big ruckman and forward Summerton, Chapman, Hornhardt and Latham also played their part in a overall good team performance.

One of OD’s biggest problems running into the finals will be the fitness of Nigel Shinnick who limped off with a hamstring injury early in the last term. He will have a couple of weeks R and R before the finals where he no doubt he will have an influence on how well the team performs.

Roxby Districts did have a lot of triers none better than Bown, Owens, Eckermann and Prosser.

After a courageous first half the Miners dropped off the pace and just why is still anyone’s guess – it gets back to the fact you can only play as well as the opposition allows, and in this case OD dictated terms.

Coober Saints destroy Hornridge hopes What a difference a week makes! With the home ground advantage the Coober Saints wiped away the bad loss of the previous week and stopped the Hornridge Magpies in their bid to put two consecutive wins on the board.

From the get go the Saints had a different attitude to their game and coach Ben Buller would have been delighted with what he saw, although with a bye in the last round before finals, Coober Pedy won’t have an influence on the outcome and will have to sit contemplating what could have been.

Now in the run-up to finals local experts are saying any one of the top four teams is capable of winning on the day and therefore premiership glory is still up for grabs.

But finals are different and the tense battle in last week’s first half of the “grand final preview” is a fair indication there is a lot of great football ahead.

Kart Club successful membership drive

he recent Desert Dirt Kart Club Come and Try Day was an outstanding success with 30 people testing their skills and driving abilities behind the wheel of one of these mighty machines.

Spokesperson for the club, secretary Cathy Calligaris told The Monitor that it was a great opportunity for people to see the family orientated club in action and to experience first hand the thrill of driving karts.

Club Vice President, “Smokie” Dawson said that getting into the sport of dirt karts needs only be as expensive as you want it to be, with entry level dependent on whether you are buying new karts or secondhand.

With the help being offered by the 30 strong Desert Dirt Club members getting into racing couldn’t be easier.

Cathy said they are hoping that after such a wonderful Come and Try Day that new members will be attracted to the club.

“We are particularly keen to encourage juniors into the ranks, as we only have four at the moment and it would be good to see many more on the track in the future.”

Juniors are the future of any club and dirt kart racing is no exception.

Cathy thanked the members for supplying their karts for the Come and Try day and for offering help to potential members.
