Club gives away over $200,000 Last financial year the Roxby Downs Community Club gave away a staggering $208,000. “It’s the community club,” Manager Stev Ellard said. “To me, that means it’s there to support the community.” And they do. A non profit organisation, the Club ploughs its revenue back into sporting clubs, local businesses and events, gives countless prizes away to members and donates huge sums to charity. The swimming club, Area School, library, racing club, fringe festival, Auskick and Rox FM are just a few of the organisations which have enjoyed the Club’s support in recent years. In fact, there is hardly a sporting or community group in Roxby Downs that has not experienced the Club’s goodwill. The Hornridge Football Club were the lucky ones last month, with new uniforms worth over $3000 donated for the players. Charities are the other big winners when the Club has money to give away. Cancer charities all enjoy the Club’s support and $23,000 was given to the victims of Cyclone Larry and the Yorke Peninsula fires recently. The Royal Flying Doctors have also benefited from the Club’s generosity, with $12,000 worth of goods, including dishwashers, refrigerators and televisions just purchased from Mitre 10 to be auctioned off on September 16. “We were overwhelmed by their generosity,” President of the Royal Flying Doctors Service Auxiliary, Marie McCormack said. “The Club has always supported the Flying Doctors. Full marks to Stev, Tracey and the staff and we can’t speak highly enough of them.” Stev Ellard is particularly proud of the Club’s support of the Make a Wish Foundation. Twice a year, 15 special needs children from remote areas are flown to Adelaide where they visit the zoo, go to the movies or the museum, eat at McDonalds and then return home, all at the Club’s expense. Members are not forgotten either, with giveaways throughout the year, great prizes on offer and a member’s incentive scheme every July. This year the grand prize was a Mitsubishi Lancer ES, which was won by Gary Butterfield. With their fingers in so many worthy pies, the Roxby Downs Community Club is an organisation which the community can be proud of.

Red devils hit Roxby Downs A couple of mean machines rumbled into town this week. Boasting an impressive 21 and 28 horse power respectively and able to reach speeds of 8kms an hour while cutting, the Toro Reelmaster and Groundmaster are set to have a big impact on the turf of Roxby Downs. Stevens Resources, who have been awarded the new contract for horticultural services in Roxby Downs, are justifiably proud of their new acquisitions. “Stevens Resources are committed to the community and we are really looking forward to this new partnership with the local council,” Site Manager for Stevens Resources, Paul Smith said. “We have invested in two new cars, a truck, new gardening equipment and of course the new lawn mowers.” The Groundmaster has rotary blades like an ordinary lawn mower, but is much, much bigger. “The Groundmaster cuts longer grass, goes over rougher terrain and is more manouvarable,” Officer of the Roxby Downs Council, Peter Keller said. “It’s a real go getter.” The Reelmaster has reel cutting blades and gives a much neater finish and is the kind of lawn mower that is used on bowling greens to provide a really smooth surface. So if you feel the ground trembling in Roxby Downs in the coming weeks, do not be alarmed … it’s probably just the new mean, green cutting machines, and the Stevens Resources crew on the job.

At last the new notice boards have arrived and been installed. What an improvement on the previous boards. People who have been

dated messages removed, daily (Monday to Friday). For those wishing to have notices posted on the Board there are two things to remember. 1. Notices can be no more than 21 centimetres x 14.5 centimetres (A5) in size or smaller. They can be orientated to landscape or portrait. 2. Notices need to be lodged at the Council front desk and will be placed on the following working day. To ensure everybody has a chance to have their notices posted thay will be removed after two weeks. At that time you may repeat the message (if still valid) and subject to space it will be reposted. The triangular notice board will have a portion allocated to council news and public notices with the remainder dedicated to notices submitte d by residents and local businesses. The Notice Board in the Mall next to the newsagency is specifically for news and information from the Community Board, Forums and Partnerships and news from Roxby Central Retailers Association. The notice board next to Woolworths is managed by the Roxby Tavern and not by the council. Anyone requiring more information regarding the updated noticeboards, or wishing to place an advertisement should call Community Development Officer, Michelle Hales on 8671 0010.

The wooden tabletop, which appeared to have had a fire set on top of it, was burned right through and will cost around $300 dollars to replace. Roxby Downs Council Works Officer Rose Ames (aged 12) agreed. Peter Keller said it was only the latest in “It’s going to make the school look a series of vandalism incidents to plague really nice. It’s so empty now, but the flowers and vegies will look great.” Principal Turner plans to use the gardens as a part of the school curriculum, featuring them in the Imagine walking from Andamooka to school’s maths, health and society and environment classes. Outback Areas Community Development Trust (OACDT) and the Building Healthy Communities initiative (BHC) kicked off last week. One of the organisers, Jean Lawrie, said the program would run for four weeks. “We’re each trying to walk 10,000 steps but when we add those steps together in our groups of five it actually equals the distance from Andamooka to Birdsville,” she said. Andamooka Primary’s greenthumbs Andamooka Primary School children are getting back to nature and back on home ground by helping establish new school gardens. Students from Andamooka Primary had been attending school at Roxby Downs following the recent fires that destroyed school buildings. Andamooka Primary School Principal Angela Turner hopes working in the school garden will help students focus on a positive future after the fire. “It’s all about regrowth and restoration,” Principal Turner said.

“About returning to the school and spending time in the community.” The new gardens will contain trees and shrubs donated by BHP Billiton for International Tree Day and vegetables which the students hope to start planting in the next few weeks. Alison Glover (aged 9) is looking forward to returning to school in Andamooka. “The school is not so big and I won’t have to get up early to catch the bus. I’m really happy about the garden going in.”

Walford Anglican School for Girls knows boarding well as it has always welcomed boarders since its beginning in 1893. However, the best in boarding is soon to be even better when Walford embarks on a new concept of boarding at the start of the school year in 2007. An exciting new building project has commenced which will provide new boarding accommodation with all the features of 21st century living as well as an extensive music centre. Up to seventy boarders will be accommodated in the new complex which will be situated in the grounds of the secondary campus. Designed as seven houses, each has its own suite of bedrooms with internet connections, en-suite bathrooms, kitchenette and recreation space. The plan provides more single rooms for senior girls but also double and triple rooms for the younger students. More space will also mean that boarders will be able to have a day friend stay overnight. The contemporary interiors of the bedrooms and other areas have won the approval of the girls who love the colours and special features of each house. The accommodation is ultra-modern and particularly designed to suit the girls. The complex also includes a dining space and a café with indoor and al fresco

eating areas for boarders as well as day girls. A state-of-the-art music centre will also be available to the boarders for rehearsals and music practice. As the new building is situated in the school grounds the girls will have greater access to all of the school facilities. The boarders just can’t wait to move into their new home-away-from-home. Principal, Mrs Helen Trebilcock is a great supporter of boarding. “I have enjoyed working in boarding schools throughout my career in education.” The mix of boarders and the contributions of their families add much to the character and life of Walford,” she said. Director of Boarding, Mrs Seona Payne, and the boarding staff members are experienced and provide a happy, caring and safe environment for their students. You are invited to visit the Walford display at the market day and meet with Seona who would love to discuss the Walford boarding experience with you. The plans for the new boarding complex will also be on display. Walford has built a reputation on providing the finest education for girls and the new boarding house is bound to set a new benchmark in boarding in Australia.

Entries for ABC Radio’s Heywire 2006 are now open and will provide youth with a chance to speak out about important issues. Hosted by the ABC, Heywire is a radio competition that invites young people aged 16 to 22 to submit a non-fiction story of less than 400 words about life in a rural or regional area. “It’s a radio story competition, but you don’t need to know anything about writing for radio,” Heywire Coordinator Justine McSweeney said. “Heywire is not about how pretty your writing is. It’s about speaking out, raising issues and having a say about what could make life better.” Judged by local ABC branches, the competition will have up to 41 winners, one from each region represented. The ABC will produce the winning entries for national broadcast and the winning authors will travel to Canberra for the 2007 Heywire Youth Issues Forum in February. Entries close on September 1, so get those pens moving. Roxby Downs Area School students can see Year 7 teacher Nat Jones for further information. Anyone else interested in entering can visit the Heywire website on abc.net.au/heywire.

period. The first collective walk of the program saw participants walk from the playground in Andamooka all the way out to the information bay at the edge of town – a distance of approximately four kilometres. Ms Lawrie said many people had come unprepared for a walk but next time would certainly remember to bring a hat, appropriate shoes and a bottle of water. Volunteers were given a pedometer to measure the number of steps they walked during a day and were asked to keep a record of how many steps they had taken. Ms Lawrie said the program was aimed at tackling a range of health issues – primarily heart disease and diabetes – which stem from prolonged inactivity, rather than direct weight loss.

the town. The notice boards in the main street had been defaced several times, public facilities were covered in graffiti, park benches and tables were destroyed and wheelie bins ripped from their moorings. “It’s not only the cost to repair. These things are vandalised again and again until the council is unwilling to replace them,” Mr Keller said. “In the end it is the community that suffers.”

Community Club riding high Facing closure five years ago because it was not making enough money to cover its own bills, the Roxby Downs Community Club has made a spectacular turnaround to net well over $3,000,000 last year. The Club, which opened in 1987, began life catering to the ‘brown shirts’, the bosses. “It wasn’t the place the workers went back then,” Office Administrator Tracey Kynoch said. “The workers went to the Tavern but that started to turn around in 1997 when BJ Stone built the Cruiser’s Bar, then Stev Ellard took over and turned it into a family place,” she said. Stev Ellard, who has 24 years experience in the hospitality industry, was offered the Club Manager’s job in 2001. Seeing enormous potential in the place, he left his Assistant Manager’s position at the Tavern to have a go at running the Club. “As far as I was concerned it was the Community Club,” Mr Ellard said. “That meant it was there to serve the community.” And he has done a great job. The Club now employs 27 people, ploughs its substantial profits back into the community and supports many local and national charities. Hoping to make the place more welcoming to families, one of the first things Mr Ellard got rid of was the plastic furniture. Then he opened the Steakhouse

Restaurant. “I was really nervous,” Mr Ellard said. “I’d never opened a restaurant before, but four years later it’s still going strong. It’s been very successful.” Mark Beenham, Club President, is very pleased with the way it has been going. “It’s a credit to the management,” Mr Beenham said. “And to the community who support it, which in turn allows the club to support the community.” Lacey Medve, who moved to Roxby Downs about four months ago, decided to join the Club when her workmates at Zealous Hair and Beauty took her there for a night out. “It’s been really great,” Ms Medve said. “I’ve met so many new people and everyone made me feel welcome. It’s like being a part of a real community. Linda Hooper, long time Roxby Downs resident and Club member, agreed. “It’s a great family night out.” “The kids have fun, the atmosphere is really good and it’s the one night of the week I don’t have to cook,” she said. Not one to rest on his laurels, Stev Ellard has more improvements in mind. His next project is a members only bottle shop, and the Roxby Downs Community Club is the first community club in South Australia to win a bottle shop licence. With its 20 year anniversary approaching, the Club continues to go from strength to strength. Congratulations to the Board and its dedicated staff.

Andamooka Our community, asks why now? our school, our students, our future The Roxby Downs Area School is throwing its doors open on Wednesday, August 23, for the annual Open Day. We hope you are able to attend to participate and recognise the achievements of the largest Area School in South Australia. If there is any further information that we can provide, or photographs, please do not hesitate to ask. Ben Summerton (Teacher on behalf of the RDAS Promotions Committee)

The planning spotlight has fallen on Andamooka as the outback town begins to experience a mini housing boom. The small community is angered by the increased focus on planning regulations by government departments as the town begins to grow due to high demand for housing and the proposed Olympic Dam Expansion. Resident have been left asking why planning applications and regulations have only recently become a focal point, accusing government of money making from the expected continued growth of the town. A meeting between townspeople and representatives of the Development Assessment Commission (DAC) raised a number of issues and concerns about building regulations The Andamooka Township is based on what is called an “unincorporated area”, (there are 31 similar areas in SA), which means it has no council and is regulated by Planning SA through Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA). There was standing room only at the meeting held at The Tuckerbox on Tuesday, July 8 as four representatives of the (DAC) met to explain regulations and answer questions. The highest concern was the issue of transportable houses and emotions ran high on a number of topics, including the issue of assessments being carried out on previously established dwellings. Concerns were also expressed about the fees required to lodge applications. The meeting was an emotive one, with the room being brought to order on a few occasions as people began to speak over each other. The representatives from DAC gave a comprehensive explanation of the rules and repeatedly expressed that it was not their intention to be difficult. DAC has offered to work with building owners, and offered extended deadlines in order to bring current buildings up to the required building and safety standards. Building approvals have been required since 1993 when the relevant Act associated with planning approval in Andamooka was changed. In some cases, misinformation had unwittingly placed owners at odds with the requirements, and in other cases the rules may have been ignored.

sometimes we just forget, or don’t enquire, about what is available on our doorstep. The Monitor hopes this weekly business profile introduces you to the local personalities who run our

Owner Jean Dunstan, who opened the business in Adelaide in 1998 and relocated to Roxby Downs with her husband and children in 2001, is passionate about craft. “Owning my own shop is wonderful. I get to meet a lot of like minded people and I have the freedom to indulge in my passions, sewing, embroidery, just creating beautiful things.” Ms Dunstan designs her own original projects and one of her stitcheries graced the cover of national magazine, “Handmade” recently. She is also a keen patch

worker and embroiderer and has several more projects being published in coming months. Offering a huge range of fabrics, patterns, haberdashery, sewing supplies, quilting supplies, beads, silk ribbons, folk art and jewellery, Creative Trims and Crafts really is a one stop shop for crafters. Ms Dunstan is particularly proud of her patch work and quilting range. “People who come into the shop for the first time are often surprised at what I hold. offering sewing classes and weekend workshops, where aspiring stitchers can go and make a project in a day. Upcoming weekend workshops include fabric bag making, porcelain tassel dolls, silk ribbon embroidery, stitchery, pansy making, folded ribbon roses and porcelain doll pin cushions and hat pins. All students will receive a 10 per cent discount on purchases made during the classes. Creative Trims and Crafts is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9.30am to 2.30pm. Don’t forget to clock off

Tom Beever Family and Youth Officer

Family Matters One of the things I loved about ministry was the privilege of preparing couples for marriage. To sit, talk, assist and prepare couples who wanted to step into marriage was a great honor that I never grew tired of. I raised a number of talking points over the weeks of preparation that I thought would benefit the couple and one of the talking points was titled, ‘Don’t Forget To Clock Off !’ I raised such a talking point because I believe one of the greatest “problem areas” that can confront our home…is the danger of not clocking off from work. Meaning, many fall for the trap of constantly bringing work related issues home with them when they should be left at work. Interestingly enough, the topic proved to be a great success amongst the couples I prepared for marriage which is why it became an integral aspect of my marriage preparation. It always led to great dialogue. Of course, it’s not all that easy to turn work off when we get home. But we do need to be mindful that whilst we talk about our work issues we reduce our quality family time in the process, and most homes need as much quality family time as they can get. When we constantly bring home work related frustrations and issues they can not only lead to problems within our home but they can be detrimental to our health and work performance. Why? Because if we fail to take quality time out from our work we leave ourselves open for stress, poor relationships within the home and work, and poor work performance. Home is supposed to be a nurturing

environment where we rest, relax and enjoy the love and company of our family and friends. But that can be easily lost or overlooked if we don’t learn the simple art of “switching off ” once we’re home. Perhaps you’re experiencing stress related issues at work right now. Maybe you have a challenging job with a punishing workload, intense demands and tight deadlines. Perhaps there is a bit of “politics” floating around where you work or your boss or clients keep piling on the pressure. Well guess what? The solution to your stress/work problem won’t get any better if you constantly talk about it at home! The real solution to work issues is to try and sort them out whilst you’re at work. By all means talk to your spouse, family members or friends…but try not to make work THE topic of discussion. I have said similar things to those who love their job. Loving your work is wonderful. It’s great to be paid for something you love doing! But! There are two things to be mindful of; One: Constantly talking about work can not only “wear thin” with those around you. But it can also be detrimental to us, our relationships and work performance because the correct work-life balance is to work to live not to live to work. Two: Some people love their work so much that going home can become a kind of an “anti-climax” for them. That might sound strange, but there are people who have become so wrapped up in their work that they find it difficult to unwind, or switch off at home. Don’t get me wrong, talking work amongst family, friends and work colleagues (So long as it isn’t confidential) is fine. But be careful it doesn’t become THE topic of conversation as it has for many. The various roles we occupy as parents, partners and employees or employers bring with them different obligations which need to be reconciled and balanced. Balancing work, family and lifestyle commitments is often difficult but it’s one of the most important things we can do for our family, self and work place. If you have mastered the art of totally switching off from work whilst at home, I’d like to know your recipe. For rest and quality time out from our work is what we all need at the end of a day, and at the end of the week. Taking time out with our family and friends in our leisure time compensates us for the stress that we can sometimes experience at work. But we deny ourselves of recovery for the new day or week ahead if we fail to take the time out that our mind and body needs. So! ‘Don’t Forget To Clock Off ’ before you get home…it’ll make all the difference!

Mine tragedy in Coober Pedy Coober Pedy Police and Port Augusta Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB) officers are investigating the death of a woman in Coober Pedy on Sunday. Police and State Emergency Services (SES) discovered the body of a 45-yearold woman late on Sunday afternoon

after receiving reports that a woman had fallen into a mine shaft. The Coober Pedy woman’s body was found at the bottom of a mine shaft 10km outside of town. Police investigations into the matter are continuing.

Alcohol and drug awareness campaign

The Alcohol and Substance Partnership met last week to discuss what actions it could initiate to reduce the impact of alcohol and drug abuse in Roxby Downs. The Partnership heard there were already many initiatives and programs aimed at assisting those who were dependent on drugs and alcohol, and other programs that created greater awareness of the consequences of prolonged overindulgence. The various support and awareness campaigns were managed by different sections of the government including the Drug Action group, licensing court, Drug Alcohol Services SA, the Health Commission and the Department of Transport. “Most will agree Roxby Downs is a great place to live due to the outback lifestyle, low crime rate and safe country town mentality,” Chairman Ray Goldie said. “However incidences fuelled by over indulgence in alcohol continues to be a blight on the community,” Mr Goldie said. “The majority of crime, motor offences and accidents are connected in some way to alcohol and drugs.” “There is no doubt if we could reduce the over indulgence, our safe town would be even safer, our parties less stressful, our community healthier and our workplaces safer and more productive,” he said. Another point raised at the meeting was the lack of local exposure to State Government generated anti drug and alcohol media campaigns due to the absence of South Australian based commercial television and radio stations in Roxby Downs. It was agreed the Partnerships’ most effective roles would be to coordinate local awareness campaigns supported by the resources of the appropriate government agencies. “The primary purposes would be to promote responsible drinking and access to support for those who have dependency issues,” Mr Goldie said. The campaign would have a regional focus and include Woomera and Andamooka and where possible include the wider Far North Regions. “The challenge for this exercise is to be honest about problem and not to over-sensationalise these issues,” Mr Goldie said. “Over indulgence in alcohol and dependency of drugs is a world wide problem, and it is here in Roxby Downs. “However, many of the issues such as youth drinking, aggressive behaviour and domestic violence are small by comparison with other towns and centres.” “Nevertheless that does not make it tolerable by any measure and we must do everything possible to reduce its impact on individuals, families and the wider community,” he said. Members of the Partnership represent health professionals, police, family and youth, Drug and Alcohol Services SA, businesses and concerned residents, who were now identifying all possible sources of support for the proposed program. In a few weeks the Partnership will meet to assess the information and how the resources could be best used.

International youth day sizzles

Roxby Down’s youth worker Siona Glasson placed the focus on youth for International Youth Day by sizzling the sausages in front of Roxby Central last Saturday. The sausages were free for youth 12- 25 years of age and a $1.50 for those younger or older. Residents of all ages happily handed over the money to support our youth. Above Siona Glasson and Jake Duggan set to sizzle at the BBQ.

Netball Year 12 Food and Hospitality SASSSA 2006 Congratulations to all the girls who participated in SASSSA Netball Carnival in Whyalla on Tuesday 1st August!. We took three teams away with us, a Yr 11&12 team, a Yr 10 team and a Yr 8&9 team. All girls put in a very good effort and, although some came off a little worse-for-wear, they played well all day. The teamwork and co-operation shown by all, was beyond anything we could have expected. Thank you to the Roxby Downs Netball Association for all their support, and for allowing us to wear the Association’s bodysuits. A special thanks to Mrs Seidel, Miss Edmonds, Karen Traeger, Raeleen Girdham, Bev Roberts, Louise Reed and Michelle Casserly. Their help and support with the organisation of the teams and trainings is much appreciated as was all their help on the day. Thanks also to the bus driver and the Roxby Downs Coach service for getting us there and back on time. By Emma Killeen and Rachel Sheppard

OPEN DAY

Alison Lane shows off the dish she created.

Lee Hunter proudly displays his work of art.

Recently the Year 12 Food and Hospitality students investigated the types of dishes that are included on restaurant menus such as the Oasis Restaurant in Roxby Downs. A visit was undertaken by the students to the Roxby Motor Inn where Lauren, the chef, spoke about the process of food selection and presentation of dishes suitable for restaurant dining. As a part of their fourth assignment students had to independently

select, prepare and present a main course dish suitable to be included on the Oasis menu. A range of dishes were created which provided the students with challenging preparation and presentation techniques. All students completed the task successfully and demonstrated the high level of skills they have now developed. Mrs Kate Bennie (Home Economics Teacher)

Reception - year six news

Welcome back to all students and families for Term 3 and we hope you had an enjoyable holiday. As is becoming quite common at Roxby Downs Area School we farewelled several students at the end of Term 2 and we wish them well in their new schools and communities. As well as the 15 new Headstart Receptions we welcomed 17 new students from a variety of locations including Western Australia, New South Wales, Indonesia and Mt Gambier and we hope they settle well into school life and enjoy their time in Roxby Downs. We also welcomed two new staff to the R-6 Cohort in Mrs Julie Greenfield who is continuing with the Term 2 Headstart class as a Reception teacher and Mrs Julie Traeger who will be taking on Mrs Haddock’s role in the Year 5 class on Monday and Tuesdays. We are confident that both of these

teachers will be a great asset to our staff and look forward to their contributions to RDAS. Term 2 was certainly a busy term and Term 3 is shaping up to be just as jam-packed with a variety of events including Tennis Coaching Clinics , LaNs test in Week 3, Open Day in Week 5, Year 5 and 6 camps to Melrose, Student Quiz Nights, the School Production and fortnightly assemblies. We hope to see many of you at these events and a reminder that we welcome parents and caregivers into the school to work in partnership with us and it is fantastic to see parents in the school supporting literacy programs , electives and craft activities. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have some time to spare and would like to be involved in your child’s learning. One area that we need to remind students and families about is

the exp e ctation a s set dow n by Governing Council that all students will wear the designated uniform to school. Since the arrival of the new fleecy tops the wearing of winter uniform has improved remarkably but there are still a few students who persist in wearing inappropriate uniform to school. Notes to teachers via the diary when a child is not in uniform for a given reason would be appreciated as other wise it may be necessary that we require students to change. Notes will be sent home via the diary where class teachers are concerned about non-compliance in regard to the wearing of uniform. Wearing of school uniform relates to our school values of commitment and cooperation and will enable us to ensure the school is held in high regard. Lyn Ferenci R-6 Assistant Principal

A message for all families attending this years Royal Adelaide Show. South Australia Police together with the Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of South Australia are committed to ensuring the safety of patrons attending this years’ Show. Children becoming separated or lost from their parents or caregiver can create significant distress, and have an adverse impact on the enjoyment for all concerned. Prior planning by parents and caregivers and the use of the “IF I’M LOST” discs has significantly reduced the number of children becoming lost in the past three years. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to implement a simple strategy with their children, should they become separated. Such a strategy could include arranging to meet at a well known location and encouraging a lost child to seek help from an appropriate adult. Children should also be reminded of the ‘Stranger Danger’ message. The use of the “IF I’M LOST” disc is designed to reunite lost children with their parents in the event of becoming lost or separated. Parents and caregivers are advised to utilise the “IF I’M LOST” discs at this year’s Show. Discs are available from the following locations at the Showgrounds, the Public Transport Information Booth, The Farmyard Nursery, Information Booths and at the Showground Police Station (all clearly marked on the Royal Adelaide Show map). Police recommend that an immediately contactable mobile phone number be written on the reverse side of the disc. The child’s name should not be included on the disc. Discs should be attached to the rear of a child’s outer clothing. Anyone finding a lost child is asked to immediately take the child to the Showground Police Station or to any police officer patrolling at the Show. Patrons should not attempt to call the number on the disc themselves. Police will ensure appropriate care is provided until children are reunited with their parent or caregiver. South Australia Police have praised the efforts of the show organisers in implementing this initiative and believe it will ensure they are able to quickly reunite children with their parents Enrolment Boom In the first two weeks of this term, we have enrolled 52 new students and the trend suggests there are more to come in the next few weeks. I can only imagine what our student numbers will develop into when the Mine Expansion really gets under way. We can look forward to exciting times and the challenges of being able to offer a significantly expanded curriculum because extra students attract extra teachers, who, in turn, bring new subject choice experience for our school. New garden beds When you next visit the school make sure you go through the gateway between the Administration block and the Community Library and then turn left towards our canteen. You will soon see the wonderful new garden beds that have been planted. A huge vote of thanks goes to Karen Grantham and Sally Cormack for their efforts with this project. They were ably assisted by Georgina Arthurs’ class, Sally and Belinda Ramsey’s class and Beth Van Der Hucht’s class, who all assisted with the planting. Stephen Marsh, our groundsman, played a major role in preparing the ground and one of our parents Scott Coady, gave up a day of his free time to help lay the bark chips around the new plantings. Project Funding of $1500 was very generously donated by the Parents and Friends Association for our school and we also had tremendous support from Vicky Mason and Outback Landscape Supplies in setting up the project design and material supplies. Congratulations to all involved for a magnificent effort and another reason for us all to be proud of our school. Thursday August 17, 2006 – Page 7

Monitor COMMUNITY MATTERS

Meetings of the Crown Land Working Party and Waste Management Working Party were deferred because key people have been away on leave. It is anticipated that these meetings will take place in the next fortnight. Both are subcommittees of the Environment Partnership. The Crown Land Working Party will tackle issues such as off road use of vehicles and the damage they cause to the environment and dangerous motorcycle behaviour on footpaths and walking tracks. The Waste Management Working Party will work on strategies that include: recycling of both commercial and residential waste, creating an environmentally friendly retail precinct, addressing the high levels of rubbish in town and the impact of uncovered loads on trailers. Environment Partnership is developing an Environment specific questionnaire which will be distributed to businesses to gather information and feedback on business practices relating to waste management, environmental policies, and recycling. The results of the survey will help the Partnership plan future strategies and promotional campaigns. A list of local native plant species proven to do well in sand and clay and suitable for the climate in Roxby Downs is being compiled to assist local residents develop native gardens. A major concern for the Partnership is the increase in weeds and planting of non native species in gardens. A community awareness campaign is planned for National Weedbuster week which falls from 7-14 October. A position description for an Environmental Officer has been written and sent to Council and BHP Billiton for support. If approved the Environmental Officer will act as a link between the community and the Partnership, help with projects and work with schools and the community to raise awareness of environmental issues. The Community Board has now officially taken over the notice board in the shopping centre mall. The notice board will be used by the Community Board, Forums and Partnerships for notices of upcoming meetings, promotions and events and for sharing of information on projects and activities. The notice board compliments the information appearing on the community website – the e-board (www.community.roxbydowns.com) and in the Monitor each week. For further details visit: www.community.roxbydowns.com

Forums seek minute takers Roxby Downs Community Board Executive Officer Michelle Hales is looking for volunteers to take the minutes at Forum Meetings. Since the Community Board established the Community Forums in September 2005, council staff have taken the minutes, but it was always intended the task be handed on to the community. “It would be a good way for someone who isn’t ready to get involved in the committees to take part,” Ms Hales said. “It would suit young people seeking experience in committees or anyone with an interest in community matters.” The Family and Youth, Health and Volunteering Forums, which meet about once a month, are all seeking minute takers.

Anyone interested would need to be available to attend the meetings. The Volunteering Forums and the Health Forums take place in the evening and the Family and Youth Forums are held either during the day or at night. The task would involve taking notes at Forum meetings, either on paper or directly into a laptop that will be supplied, and then typing up a draft of proceedings for Michelle Hales, who would see to formatting and distribution. The Community Board is offering training and mentoring to anyone willing to lend a hand. For further details or to express your interest please contact Michelle Hales on 0438871153.

Would you like to help a Community Forum or Partnership?

Community Forum invites the public to get involved In September 2005 the Community Board established the Community Forums to examine issues and opportunities relating to Roxby Downs. Currently there are nine committees covering education and workplace training, health, family and youth, business, sports and recreation, arts and culture, volunteering, alcohol and substance abuse and the environment. “It is a gathering of people in the community to talk about community issues, a chance to voice their opinions,” Roxby Downs Community Board Executive Officer Michelle Hales said. “We are looking for people who are enthusiastic, care about what happens in the community and want to have a say,” she said. The Community Forums meet regularly to discuss issues relating directly to their group. These discussions give rise to working groups which tackle specific projects. The coming Career and Employment expo is the result of the enthusiasm and hard work of a working group formed from the education and workplace training forum. Other working groups, such as the pet management subcommittee, are researching various options and gathering community opinions, which will be passed on to the Environment Partnership to make recommendations to council. The Community Board welcomes new people at the Forums at any time and invites people interested in addressing issues to attend a meeting. If people feel they have more to contribute, they could join the forum and there was no particular enrolment procedure. Anyone wishing to know more about the Community Board or the Community Forums can contact Michelle Hales on 0438 871 153.

Sports forum to get additional support At the meeting held on August 8, members of the Sports and Recreation Forum were pleased to learn that a Sports and Recreation Officer will be employed as a result of the Cultural and Leisure Precinct restructure. The members could immediately see the benefits of having a dedicated officer who can assist clubs and the community particularly in the area of youth development. Several suggestions were put forward of things that the Officer could help with including “come and try” sporting activities to expose kids to sports like rugby and athletics. Youth development is high on the agenda for the Forum and Roxby Leisure and activities like soccer for kids have already been introduced. At the meeting a representative from the Golf Club spoke about the increase in the number of ladies playing golf and they are also looking to increase the level of participation of juniors. The Club has rganized for a professional coach to come to Roxby Downs to help with junior coaching but this service will be open for anyone wishing to join in. Coaching dates and times will be advertised closer to the date. The Club has had a lot of good ideas about potential projects and they are getting grant funding proposals together to help make these happen. The topic of transport costs has been on the agenda for several meetings. The Forum has contacted bus companies for special rates but there isn’t enough of a demand from the clubs for the bus companies to be interested. During a recent survey of members on this issue only four replies were received. www.themonitor.com.au

As announced in November 2005 Telstra will build a new national 3G network. Importantly, Telstra’s new 3G network will provide the same or better coverage as the exiting CDMA network and they won’t be switching CDMA off before meeting our commitment to providing the same coverage The new national 3G network will cover over 98% of the Australian population and bring to all those within its coverage access to an exciting and growing range of 3G products and services that will give Australians more ways to do more things in more places. The network will not only support products such as video calling and Video MessageBank, but also high speed wireless broadband access. The launch of the new national 3G network will mean the CDMA network will eventually be phased out. However, the two networks will run in parallel for a period of time to allow customers time to migrate from the CDMA network to the new network. “We have great expectations for the new network. For along time we have not been able to access wireless data at high speed while this technology has been readily available in most metro areas. The new network will provide us with the opportunity to access the range of data options we have previously been unable to access” says Jeff Craigie, Manager of Rodda

Communications. The issue of current CDMA subscribers and the issue of new handsets has been an issue raised on a regular basis. “Telstra have informed us that there will be no penalty incurred for current CDMA subscribers when they migrate to the new 3G network and in reality they would like everyone who uses CDMA to migrate across as soon as they can”. 3G has for a long time been a buzz word used, so what does 3G mean. “3g simply means, third generation.” “Currently we use 2 of 2.5G services with our CDMA and GSM handsets. 3G is a truly Data and Voice netwrok which allows you to watch highlights of the weekends footy results or news, email and correspond with in Video conference. Essentially it’s the internet on your handset”. Rodda communications will be stocking the new range of 3G handsets when the network is released. This is expected to be in mid to late October. “We have been advised of an extensive range of new 3G handsets from a range of manufacturers and customers can view these handsets at our Kadina or Roxby Downs stores in late October. For business customers we would be more than happy to call and go through the various handset options and the new plans that will be available”. 39whyallacomp170806

Remote Access Machines reliability and diversity After 11 years servicing Roxby Downs’, Random Access Machines (RAM) know about the needs of Roxby Downs residents and businesses. You do not stay in business for that long in a small town without building a good reputation based on reliability. From small beginnings in 1995 to today’s homebased office on Axehead Road this local business has continually grown and expanded its services.

Proprietors Jo and Adam Culf can meet the needs of most customers, whether it is hardware, software, warranty work, flexible payment or rental plans. Always competitive on price, RAM only stock quality goods and encourage customers to look long term because a cheap out of town price now may finish up being very costly in the future when a breakdown occurs. It could also leave you without your equipment

for long periods if you have to send it away. When dealing with RAM you have the comfort of dealing with the owners of the business and they are just down the road, not 300 - 600 kilometres away or a company which is no more than a web address. So next time you need new equipment or an upgrade call Adam and Jo at Random Access at 8671 1423.

Mortgage Choice, Australia’s leading mortgage broker, believes the Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to increase the official cash rate (and therefore mortgage interest rates) by 0.25 percent will force Australians to be more vigilant than ever when it comes to controlling personal finances. The Reserve Bank of Australia cited Australia’s four percent inflation rate as a contributing factor in this month’s decision, in addition to factors such as underlying inflation increasing to 3 percent and total credit growth for the first half of 2006 reaching an annualised rate of 16 percent. Based on the average Australian owneroccupied home loan of $222,200 (May ABS data) repaid at 7 percent over a 30-year term, the rate rise of 0.25 percent would result in monthly repayments increasing by $37 per month.

Mortgage Choice loan consultant, Mark Scherer said that while the latest cash rate decision placed further pressure on homeowners’ ability to make ends meet, it was an opportune time for Australians to reassess their budgets to facilitate smarter spending choices. “Australians should consider the August rate rise as a ‘call to action’ to take control of their finances,” Mark said. “As a property loan commonly represents a significant portion of a borrower’s monthly expenses, it is worth them considering whether their current home loan is still the most suitable for their lifestyle and financial circumstances - or whether it is time to make some changes”. Visit Mark’s website at www.mortgagechoice.com.au/mark.scherer or call him on 0403 577287.

Red Dunes Scrapbooking and Papercrafts is set to suffer a shake up soon when owner Jane Southon and her family leave town. Founded in February 2005 in the Southon’s lounge room, the business quickly grew so big that an extra room had to be added to their house to accommodate it. Now a regular at market day, Ms Southon runs the shop, hosts workshops and classes and holds a weekly ‘scrap together’ at St Barbara’s School on Tuesdays at 7pm. It has been a huge hit with local crafters. “It’s been a great success,” Ms Southon said. “It’s just gone from strength to strength.” Unfortunately a recent tragedy saw the Southon family unit increase by two. Ms Southon’s brother in law passed away and suddenly, instead of four children, she had six. After some consideration the Southons decided to move south to be closer to family. Roxby scrapbookers need not be dismayed. Ms Southon is already choosing consultants in the Roxby Downs and Andamooka areas to carry on her work and hopes that her customers will still support her via her website www.red-dunes.com. She will also supply materials by mail order. Red Dunes Scrapbooking and Papercrafts is located at 19 Gregory Street. Enquiries to Jane Southon can be made by phoning 86711937.

QUESTION: What rate of growth do you believe is achievable in a good superannuation fund over a five-year period? ANSWER: The rate of growth depends on the assets held within the fund. You need to feel comfortable with the level of growth assets (share market and property) in the fund before deciding on the right mix of assets and determining your risk profile to establish the degree of risk you are prepared to take with your money. A fund with 40 per cent growth assets could be expected to receive about 6 per cent, 3 per cent above inflation, and has done over the last 5 years. One with 100 percent growth assets will experience much more volatility but could be expected to average a higher return of 8 per cent to 9 per cent (5 per cent to 6 per cent above inflation). If your superannuation has not performed over the past two years you need to seriously consider changing because generally returns have been very good. The 18 months before March 2003 were poor but returns have rebounded well. Superannuation is not an asset class like property or shares. It is simply a vehicle which lets you invest money in a low-tax environment and you can choose what allocation you have in shares, property, cash, etc. If you invest in growth assets with a long-term time frame you should achieve good returns. QUESTION: My wife is 61 and I am 64. We intend to work for another few years. Can we get government assistance for continued work until I’m 70? If so, is it $28,000 tax-free? I am a builder and have built two villas opposite our home. We are renting them out at $185 a week each. The council’s valuation is $265,000 for both and currently the market value is $215,000 each. Our home is 37 years old and we are upgrading the place to the tune of $35,000. We would like to go on the pension when we retire. Can we sell the two villas and convert it into an annuity? At the same time we would like to give some money to our two children. What is your advice in that situation? ANSWER It is possible to obtain Centrelink benefits between age pension age and 70. You could claim a part-pension if you qualify or register for the Pension Bonus Scheme. This is where a tax-free lump sum is paid to people who work past age pension age. The amount depends on how long you work and how much pension you are eventually entitled to. If you do sell the properties you will be able to establish a retirement income stream such as an allocated pension, annuity or term allocated pension. All of these investments have different features that can help to maximise the age pension. You can gift money to your children. Anything in excess of $10,000 a financial year, with a maximum of $30,000 over a five-year period, will coun as an asset for five years under Centrelink’s Assets Test and will also have income deemed under the Incomes Test.. It is unlikely that you will qualify for a full pension. However, your income should be in excess of $40,000 a year, including a part-pension. You also should not be paying any tax, particularly if you split the investments so that you share the income.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are the most common form of preventable intellectual disability and are the direct result of harmful drinking levels during pregnancy. A new guide for midwives detailing the latest information on the dangers of drinking alcohol when pregnant has recently been released by Minister for Substance Abuse, Gail Gago. An initiative of Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia (DASSA), Southern Adelaide Health Services and Flinders University School of Nursing and Midwifery, the new “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders – A Guide for Midwives” resource kit, will now be distributed to midwives throughout the state. “This new guide will be a valuable resource for any midwife,” Minister Gago said. “This guide is an easy-use resource that helps midwives address these issues which can often be a sensitive area of discussion with pregnant women, such as whether they may be drinking too much. “Midwives are in an ideal position to discuss the dangers of drinking alcohol with pregnant women, and this guide gives them the latest information on this very serious issue for women in antenatal care. “Through the resource kit, we are encouraging midwives to be proactive and to speak openly about alcohol issues, to look for women who may be at risk of drinking at dangerous levels and how to address those issues effectively. “The resource kit is aimed at every expectant mother and we’re hoping this guide will spread the message about safe drinking and help lower that trend. Residents of Woomera, Roxby Downs and Andamooka can find further information on the issues of drinking while pregnant by calling the Roxby Downs Hospital 8671 9020 and ask for the midwife or community health nurse.

Men’s Business

with John Ashfield Depression is now the fourth most frequently managed illness by general medical practitioners. It is ranked as the most generally debilitating illness in the developed world, and is affecting an increasing number of Australian men. One in six men will suffer from depression at some point in their lives. And suffer they do, because depression commonly includes symptoms like: constant tiredness , f lat mood, loss of self-confidence, feelings of hopelessness, loss of pleasure in usually enjoyable activities, loss of motivation, insomnia, appetite disturbance, and in some cases suicidal thoughts. But there is now a proven way that men experiencing depression can take an active role in their own recovery. Research now suggests that daily physical activity can actually alter our brain chemistry, in a way that counters the disruptive effects of depression. It is thought that regular exercise is able to change levels in the brain of serotonin – the chemical neurotransmitter associated with our libido, appetite, mood, and sleep and wake cycles. In fact, some research studies indicate that regular exercise may be very nearly as effective as medication, in relieving the symptoms of

Getting Physical Might Help Cure Your Depression mild to moderate depression. It may also help to prevent depression, and alleviate the symptoms of anxiety. Interestingly, one study indicated that an even higher number of people found that their depression resolved when they combined daily physical exercise with antidepressant medication, compared with those who used just medication or just physical exercise. What kind of exercise is best? Well the choice is yours, but what you could consider, because it’s easy and doesn’t require any equipment – except suitable footwear, is brisk walking. Of course, mowing the lawn, swimming, cycling and other forms of exercise are fine, so long as they elevate both your breathing and heart rate. You’ll know you’ve got this about right if you can talk but not sing. Earmarking 30 minutes for exercise (preferably five days each week), amongst other recreational activities, represents only a small adjustment, and is a great investment in your mental health and your general physical health. If you also want to achieve fitness, then you’ll have to work harder, by ramping up the pace to vigorous exercise for your 30 minutes, or doubling the time to 60 minutes

each day. An inactive lifestyle increases the risk of depression. And depression increases the likelihood of an inactive lifestyle. The two appear to influence each other. Getting physical really does have a lot going for it. Remember, think of daily physical activity as an opportunity, not an inconvenience. Try to be active most days, in as many ways as you can; regularity is vital. If you have a medical condition, or haven’t exercised for a long time, be sure to first get some advice from your doctor about the best form and level of exercise for you. Calling all roxby cycling enthusiasts Written by Heather Carey Did the recent Tour de France send excitement coursing through your brain? If so then why not join new local cycling group Team Café Dimanche – French for “Sunday Coffee” in what could be the continuing “Tour de Désert”. Some local cycling enthusiasts have commenced Sunday morning rides of around 30 kilometres. The ride is held over various tracks, according to the wind conditions. After an exhilarating hour or more of physical exertion it’s off to The Dunes for a coffee - hence the team name. The time slot is currently 10am Sunday morning, but will be modified as summer approaches. Who knows where it all may lead…..the Roxby to OD Triathlon, or Naked Cyclist for World Peace? Let the fun begin! Anyone wishing to know more can phone the current wearer of the yellow jersey Daryl Wake on 0408 118 685 for more info. The team looks forward to seeing new members on any given Sunday that you’ve a mind (and body) to join in.

Warrior’s

This weeks “Good Read” has been submitted by Fiona Docking, giving another view of the social richness that exists in Roxby Downs. By Fiona Docking Who are the Wednesday Warrior’s? I first heard of them in 1992 when my then fiancé, drove out of our drive way and called me four hours later drunk as a Lord, requesting that I “tum an git me.” I decoded this as come and get me. His explanation was that he’d been playing golf. “Golf?” I questioned “ I thought golf was for old retired guys with baggy checked pants, multicoloured Brogues and bald heads.” I realised this was a very wrong assumption on my behalf and I soon discovered the Warriors had been formed many years earlier, and was the brain child of a hand full of Met Plant and Mine Workers from WMC. “As a social day to get together out of work and have some fun.” was one opinion. Some 14 years later, upon my return to Roxby Downs I was amazed to find the Wednesday Warriors are still getting together for their social days and that they now have over 30 enthusiastic members. They are a very social mob and are keen for newcomers. And it doesn’t really matter if you can play or not, there are plenty of members with years of experience to give you tips. As one die hard Warriors member told me “Bag Carriers, Buggy Pushing Volunteers are always welcome” These members are dedicated to their golf like my Grandmother’s was for attending church on Sunday’s. “It is a social day out and a lot less competitive than the Saturday Competitions.” My now Ex husband who is still a member of the

$5

Warrior’s informs me. “It’s not just for men, women are also welcome” Some are so dedicated to their game that even after working a 12 hour night shift at the Mine, they are more than happy to play the 9 holes and pay the $4 fee. The Warrior’s have many member’s from very different back grounds and joining this Club is a great way to meet new people and have a few laughs. Getting a bit of fresh air and exercise is a bonus as well. A good friend of mine Jason Haddock said “The longest drive of the day is on the way home” and Rod Crettenden backs this up with what I believe describes this day to a tee, “ We may not be the US Open but we can definitely out drink them.”Having said that however, every member I spoke to (and there were quite a few) assured me they have designated drivers to make sure everyone gets home safely, and without running our local law enforcement off their feet. The Golf Club provides a licensed bar with a nice out door area for socialising. A lot of effort has been put in to this club to make it comfortable for it’s members. So if you are ever at a loose end on a Wednesday why not take a look, who knows you just might be the next Tiger Woods. Whether you are a golfer or not I think this is a fantastic Roxby tradition. If you would like to join the Warrior’s for a round or two, information can be obtained from the Roxby Downs Golf Club or from the President of the Wednesday Warrior’s Col Frazer.

Encouraged by RJ, however, the animals slowly venture over the hedge that separates them from the brand new suburban development that appeared over the winter while they were sleeping, and what RJ shows them is a whole new world where humans leave food ripe for the taking. BHP Billiton has come out as a big supporter of Young Peoples’ theatre. They have released details of a million dollar package to support youth arts in South Australia. This includes sponsorship of an artistic director for D’Faces of Youth, a flagship youth performing arts Company based in Whyalla. T h e Yo u t h A r t s Working Party of the Arts and Culture Forum has been in negotiation with D’Faces of Youth over a potential partnership. We thought we might be able to develop a workshop program for young people by working together. The idea could work like this; D’Faces of Youth provides expert management and contacts with their networks of artists, any of which we may choose to weave into our series of on-going workshops. We get to provide the enthusiastic youngsters and the locally based performing arts tutors and writers. We have a core group of ten or so young girls who are interested in picking up where Stompin’ Youth left off. We also have boys that we can attract to the program if we think a little laterally. Perhaps we need to create other roles for boys. Filmmaking comes to mind. Perhaps music making? We already have the Eight Man Army and Antacid. Our intention is to employ people with expertise in various facets of the performing arts from our own ranks, and

occasionally from outside the community. We can offer enthusiastic young people skill development workshops in a routine way. A little bit like you might practise football to become a better player. We have people in our community who can get arts events going. There are plans afoot to bring Cirkidz to town at the end of October. They will be able to offer children of all ages, including their parents, workshops in circus skills and physical theatre. This week I have been writing to the Regional Arts Fund via Country Arts SA for money to bring Cirkidz back again just prior to our annual Arts Festival in April next year. BHPBilliton underwriting of youth arts is to be commended. It has emboldened us to take steps to galvanise the partnership with D’Faces and get something moving for our young people who have the desire to build on their skills in dance, drama, music and multi-media. Andamooka School will benefit from the Cirkidz visit. They are working to produce a multi-arts performance that will tell the story of their struggle to get their old school back. You can tell stories through circus. I went to Andamooka School’s “back to base” day on Tuesday and it was heart warming to see the children all in one place. You can see how the older children feel free to interact positively with the younger ones. Families are kept together. Rumour has it that a local writer, with a close connection to the School and the community of Andamooka, has volunteered to work with the children on a dramatic script. There are plans to stage a performance in early 2007. This is an enormous job and all power to those dedicated people that get behind these projects.

Just whose backyard is it, anyway? Spring has sprung, and Verne and his woodland friends awaken from their long winter’s nap to discover that a large, green hedge has cropped up right through the middle of their once-natural habitat. Enter RJ, an opportunistic raccoon who explains that the world beyond the hedge is “the gateway to the good life” where peculiar creatures called humans live to eat, rather than eat to live. “For humans,” RJ proclaims, “enough is never enough.” Suspicious and even a little jealous of the charismatic smooth-talking RJ, the ever cautious Verne wants to keep his blended family safely on their side of the hedge. But, proving the adage that one man’s garbage is another man’s--or, rather, animal’s-treasure, the manipulative RJ has his own reasons for convincing the woodland band that there is little to fear and everything to gain from their over-indulgent new neighbors. Eventually, RJ and Verne form an unlikely friendship as they and their furry friends learn to coexist with--and even exploit--this strange new world called suburbia. WDFL’s night of nights The Woomera and Districts Football League (WDFL) celebrated its Mail Medal awards last Saturday night. The winner of the 2006 Mail Medal (sponsored by The Monitor) was Hornridge player Tyron Price (top right) with 20 votes. Roxby Districts player, Leigh Devlin, came runner-up and finished with 16 votes. The night was also an opportunity to give out a number of other league awards and also the perfect time to name the WDFL team and coach of the year. Every team in the competition was represented in the team of the year, while the current Olympic Dam coach, Woody, was chosen as the coach. Winner of the goal kicking trophy by a healthy margin, was Andamooka forward, Kit Williams (far left), who kicked 60 goals before breaking his arm playing against Roxby Districts. Coober Pedy forward and mid-fielder Leroy Boland won the Best Under 21 player - a great achievement for a young player with a very bright future. The Golden Whistle award for umpiring went to Darren Roads, while the Umpires Encouragement award went to Roxby Districts youngster Todd Paull (right). Hornridge player Craig Hancock (left) received a WDFL life membership during the ceremony.
