ENVIROS SLAM WATER WASTE Written by Michelle Thomas
Roxby’s Environment Forum is calling for water restrictions to be implemented in Roxby Downs. In recent letters to the Roxby Downs Council and BHP Billiton, the Forum cited wasteful water practices by residents and businesses and the need to conserve water in the Great Artesian Basin as reasons for the need for mandatory restrictions. Environment Forum Chairperson Chris Schultz told The Monitor a number of community members have approached the Forum expressing concern about the lack of restrictions in town. “A lot of Roxby residents are concerned that in our arid environment we don’t have any water restrictions,” Mr Schultz said. “Just because we can turn on a tap without seeing a river or dam drying up, doesn’t mean we can be blasé about using water wisely. “Our water comes from the Great Artesian Basin, there are springs around the fringe which contain endangered plants and animals, it is important that we protect those ecosystems and one of the ways we can do that is to minimise our water usage,” he said. In a letter to the council the Forum suggested Roxby adopt the same conservation measures that have been implemented in Adelaide. That would allow watering of gardens,
grounds and nurseries by hand, through drip feed irrigation systems or by sprinkler between 5pm and 10am. No hosing down of external paved areas would be allowed, except under specific circumstances. Motor vehicles and boats could only be washed using a bucket, watering can, high pressure low volume water cleaner, hand held hose (fitted with trigger nozzle) or at a commercial car wash. Construction sites would also need to watch their water usage, with water banned for dust control use unless applied by hand held hose with trigger nozzle or from a motor vehicle designed to carry and deposit water. “It’s about responsible water use, not watering gardens during the day, not washing the car on the driveway and setting up your sprinkler system effectively,” Mr Schultz said. “People should not feel that water running down the road from car washing or sprinklers is acceptable,” he said. Council Administrator, Bill Boehm agreed the community should be conscious of water use, but said that it was not appropriate to apply mandatory water conservation measures. “Under the Roxby Downs Indenture Ratification Act 1982 BHP Billiton must supply a minimum allowance of potable water of 650 litres per head, plus a reasonable allowance for parks, gardens and community parks,” Mr Boehm said.
