Established 2003
The second ‘Listening to Roxby’ householder survey has been released today in The Monitor – Your Community Newspaper. It is the community’s opportunity to shape the future of Roxby Downs, Olympic Dam and Andamooka. Your comments and opinions in the 2001 survey instigated action on 27 recommendations including the establishment of the Roxby Downs Youth Centre, 105.5 RoxFM, a variety of local forums and, significantly, this newspaper! The survey form only takes a few minutes to complete but they must be returned by Friday, December 19. Your input is essential so take the time and have your say, today!
Woomera, Marree and Roxby the Far North’s tidiest towns FAR NORTH REGION…Marree, Woomera, Roxby Downs and the Olympic Dam operations were all highlighted in this week’s KESAB Tidy Towns Awards, announced on Tuesday. The Far North Region featured strongly in the portfolio of a record 334 communities and 222 schools which competed in this year’s awards. Roxby Downs was named in the top 10 Tidy Towns in the state – the latest accolade in a series of placings over more than 13 years of competition Port Vincent was named SA’s tidiest town in 2003. Marree received the Outback Community Award, ahead of runners-up Glendambo and Woomera, Marree Aboriginal School, Oasis Caravan Park in Marree, Glendambo Outback Resort, Woomera Heritage Centre and Marree Drover’s Rest also received commendations in the category. WMC Resources, managers of the Olympic Dam operations, was successful in the Commerce and Industry ‘community action’ category for its environmental initiatives and community support. In the schools category, Roxby Downs Area School and St Barbara’s Parish School, Roxby Downs, both received commendation awards. Roxby-Woomera Recycling received a commendation in the waste management category. More than 300 people attended the awards ceremony at AAMI Stadium in Adelaide on Tuesday.

The Roxby Downs Area School lifeskills class recently visited The Monitor office for a rundown on how their community newspaper is created each fortnight. “Thank you Seonie for taking your time to show us our local paper. We really enjoyed our excursion,” - Penny and Lorraine. “We were surprised how many country towns receive The Monitor,” Toby, Bodie and Brendan “I like The Monitor because I saw myself in the newspaper,” - Brendan Williams “I saw how they put the paper together on the computer,” - Toby Sutherland “I learnt that The Monitor is printed in the midMurray Mallee, but is compiled in Roxby Downs,” - Bodie Goldfinch. If you’d like to learn more about your community newspaper, feel free to drop into our Roxby Downs office any weekday, between 9.30am and 3pm.
Dear Editor. I am writing this letter to express my concerns at the revelation that a small group of local residents have been laying down the groundwork to enter an A Grade, B Grade and Under 18 team into the Spencer Gulf League football competition in 2004. Sure, there are some advantages to joining this competition such as and ‘arguably’ higher standard of competition, more exposure etc - but as I see it the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. If this community is focusing its attention on building a ‘sense of community’ then this is not a way to do it. We all know the difficulties each team has to field a side each week with people moving in and out of the town, shift work, people going away for four-day breaks and so on. If 40 players play in Port Augusta each weekend, finding another 80 players to play locally just will not happen and even to suggest they will play here and in Port Augusta is ridiculous considering the town’s work ethic and lifestyle. The increase in ‘sickies’ and absences from the mine is also likely to rise. At least now players on night shift can still play on the weekends but this won’t happen with a 10 hour round trip on a Saturday or Sunday. Many are not interested in playing in a higher level of competition – they do it to socialise, meet people and for some fun and fitness. Sure, some want to play a higher standard of football and this has always occurred anyway with these players making their own arrangements to play elsewhere and this is the way it should stay. The tradition of football in this town has been one to be proud of – it has established friendships and social networks, which are vital to this community where there are few extended families. It will also have an impact on those who profit from it locally – St Barbs with the canteen, Junior Football with the gate takings, the Club, Tavern,

Tuckerbox, Golf Club etc who profit from after match functions, the juniors who get paid to umpire and so on. No doubt money will be leaving this town – who wouldn’t shop at ‘Woolies’? Another huge concern is the impact it will have on Junior Football. What a worry to hear that one member of this group was heard to say, “Why should we?” when asked why they hadn’t had formal discussions with the Junior Football committee. Roxby has one of the strongest Junior Football Leagues in the state with over 150 kids involved. In the older age group these boys DO get limited opportunities for competition but there are other ways of providing this. Junior Football is already addressing this by planning carnivals in other towns but nobody has asked what they are doing to address this! Do you know about the Junior Development squad? As with the adults, taking a team of under 18s away will seriously affect the local Junior (and Senior) competition. There are a limited number of boys in this age group anyway and at least 6 leaving next year. Will 13 and 14-year-olds cope in an under 18 competition because they will be needed to make up the numbers? Can we ask these young people to also do this 10-hour trip on a weekend – many have part time jobs they will have to give up and other commitments? Any in Year 12 will find this difficult with their studies. If this goes ahead and there is no Junior Football here for this age group will take away another youth activity providing a social and fitness opportunity in the community? More kids on the street saying they are bored, probably. Many who don’t feel overly confident with football are encouraged to play here with their peers but will feel intimidated playing in Port Augusta against stronger opposition. The boys have experienced this with SASSSA competitions and some will not go. The other advantage to young people playing here is
that most families are involved, which if you read all the literature is a critical aspect of young people and their parents maintaining a relationship. Sharing sporting activities is high on the list as a way of doing this. Parent won’t always be able to go to Port Augusta to watch their children as they do here due to work commitments, younger siblings etc. So please, from someone who cares about what this community has to offer to keep people here, this is one of them. This decision needs careful considerations from all perspectives and all opinions need to be heard. I strongly oppose the decimation of the local clubs and league and I sincerely hope that common sense prevails and that our local football competition continues to thrive as it is from the junior ranks through to the League. Yours sincerely, Zolly Ferenci, Life member – Woomera and Districts Football League, founding and life member Andamooka Football Club, inaugural founding member Roxby Districts Football Club, inaugural founding member Roxby Downs Junior Football.
Student’s safety concerns To whom it may concern. I am a young teenager who rides off road dirt bikes on tracks just along the outskirts of Roxby Downs and out towards Andamooka. There are some members of the community who have been pulling logs on the tracks. This is dangerous. We could be injured. I ask you to stop this. Yours sincerely, Cody Lee, Roxby Downs.

NEWS Cattle drive logo comp WILLIAM CREEK… The ‘Hooves and Horns Down the Oodnadatta Track’ cattle drive will take place from Oodnadatta to William Creek, on Friday, September 3 to Saturday, September 25c 2004. “It will give participants the opportunity to go back in time and live the life a drover in the late 1800s and early 1900s,” organizing committee spokesman Steve Staines said. “The cattle drive will authentically reflect the life of the true cattlemen. “The participating “drovers” will camp in swags around a campfire with the stockmen & women and hear tales tall and true about life in the Outback “Around 600 cattle will be involved over the threeweek period.” The 203km trip will also trace part of the route taken by the Overland Telegraph line, the Ghan railway, early camel trains and the outback travelers who braved the track between Adelaide and Alice Springs before the Stuart Highway was built, according to Mr Staines. The Hooves and Horns Down the Oodnadatta Track Committee has called on the region’s children, aged 18 and younger, to design a logo for the event. “The logo needs to be a simple image suitable for embroidery and must capture the three elements of the cattle drive: cattle, horses and the Oodnadatta Track,” Mr Staines said. Digital submissions are preferred but the committee will accept logo designs on any medium. The winning designer receive a $100 cash prize donated by Peter and Derek Rowe of the Mail Run Tour. Crow causes power outage OLYMPIC DAM…A power outage caused by a crow on powerlines at the Olympic Dam desalination plant, affected Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs for more than an hour on the morning of Thursday, November 27. The power outage had several flowon affects including a transmitter failure which cut Imparja Television transmissions until 2pm Friday afternoon. Water supply was also interrupted locally due to maintenance at the town pump station which had required the system’s automatic pump starting system to be disabled prior to the power break. “WMC staff have to be congratulated for their quick work repairing the fault,” Roxby Downs Council Electrical/IT Manager David Hallett said. “Birds are a general hazard with overhead powerlines and this type of failure can happen at any time – sometimes it’s easy to fix, sometimes it takes hours. “Roxby Downs township has only one supply line and if there is a fault anywhere along that path we will certainly be affected.” In the case of power outages, Mr Hallett encouraged residents to check with their neighbours that they have the same problem, and then contact the council emergency service – 0418 892 870.

Plant failure to cost millions OLYMPIC DAM…Production at WMC Resources’ Olympic Dam operations is still on hold this week following the failure of a heat exchanger in the sulphuric acid plant late last month. The copper smelter and associated process plants remain offline this week, however mining operations continue at full capacity. The plant has been off line for almost 10 days and is expected to remain off line for at least another week. Replacement and installation costs for the heat exchanger have
been estimated in the order of A$3million. Operations impacts are estimated at 600t of copper and 12t of uranium oxide per day which equates to about $1.5 million of product daily. While investigations continue into the plant failure, end-of-year targets will be reduced in line with the production impact. In response to the incident, a review of operational performance at Olympic Dam has been ordered by WMC Resources CEO Andrew Michelmore.
FAR NORTH REGION…Local police are calling on drivers to stay safe this Christmas. “People will do lots and lots of miles visiting relatives and friends and they need to do it safely this Christmas,” Sgt Richard Hobbs told The Monitor this week.. “Statewide, fatalities on the roads are up, as is the Far North local region which includes Roxby Downs, Woomera and Andamooka. “If you’re travelling this Christmas make sure the maintenance on your vehicles is up to scratch and don’t try and cover too many kilometres in any one trip.” The ‘Fatal 5’– fatigue, alcohol, speed, seatbelts and vulnerable road-users - are a big issue any time, “but more so at this time of the year”, Sgt Hobbs said. “So get where you’re going, drag a swag along, and enjoy your Christmas without any
pressure to travel.” Mobile RBT will be active locally from the start of the school holidays and will operate until school starts again in February. The rural highway saturation program will continue right through the
holidays, up and down the Stuart Highway. “The best present you can give your family this year is a safe Christmas,” Sgt Hobbs said. “But if you’re not planning for a safe Christmas this year, local police are, so watch out!”

Call for community to drive local health issues health care - skin care - weight control FAR NORTH REGION…Coordinators of a regional health committee are calling for community nominations. Plans for the committee, which will provide community direction to the Port Augusta Hospital Board which administers local health services, were outlined at a community meeting last month. “I thought the support for the first meeting was good and many of the significant stakeholders within Roxby were there,” Roxby Downs Director of Nursing and Executive Officer Janine Connell said. “We can’t discount the importance of the people there but I’d like to see more of the average Roxby Downs citizens take up a role within the advisory group. “This is a chance for local, everyday residents to have a say in how their health services will grow and meet the needs of the community in the future
“People don’t need any special skills or experience to be involved, they just need to care about how health is delivered within Roxby Downs and want to get involved.” The committee is targeting voting members from throughout the Roxby Downs, Andamooka, Woomera, Olympic Dam and Pimba regions. Residents with an interest in joining the committee, or who would like to learn more about the group, can contact Janine Connel or Kathy Wooldridge at Roxby Downs Health Services for more information – ph 8671 9020. The next committee meeting will be held on January 19, at the Roxby Downs Health Services seminar room – all are welcome. Nomination forms are available from Roxby Downs Health Services.

TRUCK STOP...The historical Kiruna truck, being loaded underground at Olympic Dam in the vehicle’s heyday.
OD’s first truck to be displayed ROXBY DOWNS…Roxby Downs Tourism Forum is investigating options to display an historical vehicle used in Olympic Dam’s original underground operations. The Kiruna UT001 was the first underground vehicle used at Olympic Dam. The truck is the centrepiece of a collection of historical mining equipment, photographs and documents revolving around the history of Olympic Dam operations and the Roxby Downs township. Long-term Roxby Downs resident Warren Willson has been the driving force behind this collection. “The truck is the centrepiece – something that people can see and feel and touch and something to spark some interest and maybe move on to bigger and better things,” he said. “I’d like to see it alongside a building where people can see the truck, stop, and view the other items. “There’s a lot more stuff out there though, in people’s heads, and I could see a great project for the school to maybe interview some of the long-term residents before they move away.” Tourism Forum spokesperson Bree Galbraith said the forum was investigation options to display the Kiruna UT001. “Works are planned for early in the new year, but a site has not yet been set,” she said. “We think it would be a nice feature for the town and highlight more of the mining nature and history of the town – bringing that into the town.”

Roxby Downs residents still don’t call the town home, the Community Board heard at its November 23 meeting. While rental shortages and high property and rental prices were the highlight of the evening’s discussions, the community speakers at the event all warned that an attitude change was inherent to creating a ‘long-term’ residential culture in Roxby Downs. “We can talk about welcome programs and changing rents but I feel the big question is how can we keep people here longer,” Rev. Tom Beever said. “I’m staggered by how many people who live here are already planning their life outside of Roxby Downs. “They talk about ‘doing their time’ here, whether it’s five years or 10 or 15.” WMC Resources (Olympic Dam) spokesperson Mark Nelson also spoke of a high ‘turnover’ rate in staff at the operations. “For us, helping families settle in is the deciding factor on how long our employees stay,” he said. “But at least 40 or 50 per cent of our
guys working on the four-on, four-off shift are driving in and out of Roxby every shift. “That’s not an ideal situation for us, for employees or for the community.” Mr Nelson said that, while WMC had been forced to make arrangments for staff housing in Woomera during the recent employment surge associated with the operations’ SX rebuild and smelter shutdown, he expected housing demands to drop back to a reasonable level as the work subsided. “WMC does plan to develop more land in the future, but it’s not an option in the short term,” he said. “But the way I see it, WMC’s main housing requirement is for large family homes - this may not be the general need of the wider community. “Housing is not just a WMC issue it’s a community issue and I think people need to take ownership of it.” Mr Nelson pointed out that, while around 1000 people are employed locally by WMC, another 1500 are employed by other local businesses.
Far North Region Police Report A 20-year-old man of Roxby Downs was reported for in a dangerous manner on November 28, 2003. It appears that nothing was stolen at this time. A 52-year-old Elizabeth Downs man was reported for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol, cause injury and driving without due care on November 21, 2003. On November 20, 2003 a 14-year-old Roxby Downs girl was reported for providing a false name and address and driving unlicensed. A 32-year-old man from Roxby Downs
was arrested for assaulting a family Member and resisting arrest on November 16, 2003. A report of a housebreak and larceny of about $7,500 worth of property including Engel fridges, Cameras and Cash were stolen was received on November 16, 2003. Anyone with information relative this is urged to ring the Roxby Downs Police Station. Local police reported that in the past fortnight, there have been another two serious motor vehicle accidents locally. Both have resulted in very serious injuries, and in one case a near death. Both are under investigation and alcohol and speed are contributing factors. Police see firsthand the significant effect, both emotional and financial, that these accidents have on not only those involved but their families as well. Pain, grief, life long disability, loss of employment, inability to be re-employed, fines, loss of license, remorse, guilt, inability to gain future insurance, the prospect of huge civil damages claims and loss of the families’ vehicle are just some of the hurdles to face up to so, these holidays, drive safely.

Gu est Editorial DENISE HOBBS Property Manager LMS - Roxby Downs
Price rises slowing down I’ve been handling rental properties in Roxby Downs and Andamooka for 18 months now as part of the Adelaide-based company Leicester Management Services. LMS is the biggest property manager in Roxby Downs with around 250 homes. I’ve certainly seen a lot of changes in the past 18 months Over the past few months with the big SX rebuild on there’s been a lot of demand for rental properties. That’s also pushed the rental prices up. We’re obviously short of housing, but 18 months ago you had a choice of up to 20 vacant homes. We get a lot of feedback from people when they walk into the office, about the prices. We do have a big call for the larger family homes. Mainly four-bedroom homes are our biggest need. The demand’s there and if you’re an out-of-town investor buying a $200,000 home then you need to charge those prices to cover your mortage. It’s hard to predict whether the price spiral will slow down or not but my personal opinion is that it will. I can feel it slowing down now, but we’ve still only got two vacant properties in the caravan park now. Leicester Management Services has seen this before in May 99 and we expect the rents and prices fell when the vacancies increased.

A place to call home How can we ask people to call Roxby Downs home when not everyone can afford to live here? How can we build that generational social structure we’d all like to have in town - so we can spend a family Christmas in town, so grandparents can babysit when mum work, so there’s uncles and cousins around on weekends? How can we do that if young teenagers, retirees, single mums and single-income families just can’t afford to live here? I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. My kids are third-generation Roxby Downs and I’ve had the benefit of family and in-laws living locally. But just in our own family I see teenagers who couldn’t move out of home on their own, brothers and sisters sharing to meet the rents on the smallest units...and my daughter was born while my parents, my partner and I all shared a home so we could avoid the overblown OEP rents. I personally believe Roxby’s got the facilities, got most of the services and a great population to really be home for a lot more people - so how do we get them to want to stay? That family issue is a big one - how can we make rents viable for retirees, teens and single parents? It’s a community issue - but how do we as a community come up with a housing project that offers some rental variety? There’s some great programs out there - like the Bega community respite care housing in NSW that was literally built by volunteers and funded by local business. What would work for us? What do we need? Maybe, when you’re reading your community survey in The Monitor this week you can come up with some answers. The prices will shake down anyway in a few months but it doesn’t make it any easier right now. Retention of local people - that really is a community issue, I believe. This has to be a community that welcomes everyone - and all it takes is a smile or a knock on a new neighbour’s door. With so many new residents every year, from everywhere in the world, shiftworkers, young families - it’s no wonder so many of us become cocooned in our own homes and isolated. But maybe you, as an individual, can help make Roxby Downs home for one person - and make the town a little more homely for everyone.

This is the second community survey distributed through the region, and will complement the current Community Board program. “The Listening to Roxby Survey 2001 proved to be a very effective way for the community to convey their likes and dislikes about living in Roxby Downs,” consultant Ray Goldie of Goldie Strategic Development told The Monitor this week. “Businesses and the council responded immediately to the feedback the community provided and instigated projects that addressed the issues or opportunities of the time. “However the job is never complete, there is always more to do, and our community changes more rapidly than most.” Mr Goldie called on the community to complete and return their surveys as quickly as possible. “Listening to Roxby Survey 2003 will give the community a chance to advocate new initiates with the added bonus of being able to compare your responses to those you made in 2001. But remember you only have two weeks to return them.”
FAR NORTH REGION… Local thespians and amateur entertainers met this week to kick off the region’s newest theatre group SpinFX. There are no auditions for the group, no experience necessary, no need to even step on stage if you’re shy – but lots of opportunities to have some fun and be part of local ‘show business’. If you are 18 or over, want to act, paint, create sets, design costumes, sell tickets or learn about lighting – now’s your chance. To register your interest, call Martin Welsh after hours on 0408 826 099 or SMS anytime.
Get online for safer roads
ROXBY DOWNS... Safety conscious Roxby residents now have a new means of improving road safety around their town. From your own computer, you can log on to the Roxby RoadSafe web page at www.rrs.roxby downs.com. Using the ‘feedback’ button, you can bring important issues of road safety to the attention of the Council, Police and SA Government. “It could be a hazard on the road, or a blocked footpath forcing pedestrians to use the roadway, or a good idea for controlling speed on some of our busy thoroughfares – by bringing it to Roxby RoadSafe’s attention, you will be doing your bit to ensure the safety of your fellow residents,” Roxby Roadsafe chairman Fr Jim Monaghan said. “As well as feedback, you’ll be able to monitor the development of Roxby RoadSafe’s other goals as part of our Strategic Plan for road safety in Roxby over the next five years. “The page has been developed by Year 11 ICT students at Roxby Downs Area School, with the assistance of a Transport SA grant won last year by Roxby RoadSafe. “In return for their interest and commitment, the students were awarded coupons towards payment of professional driving lessons in Roxby Downs. “Roxby RoadSafe acknowledges the important contribution of the students, who have brought a young person’s perspective to the page. To go with the new site, Roxby RoadSafe has also obtained a computer which will be installed in the Cultural Precinct so residents can log on and offer their ideas or observations on road safety to the team.
EAST PARK MEAT STORE “It’s a treat to eat!” TOURS FOR TOURISM...Local tourist forum members, Arid Recovery staff and tourism operators, from left, Arid Recovery coordinator Brydie Hill, Peter Taubers, Alex Barker, Rob Barker, Margot Duke, Jeff Taubers and Nicki Munro.
Tourism forum network tours kicked off at Arid Recovery FAR NORTH REGION…Tourism operators from throughout the Far North Region joined a tour of the Arid Recovery site last month. “The purpose of the tour was to raise public awareness of the local tourism forum and its role,” Tourism Marketing Development Officer Alex Barker said. “It was also a chance to showcase one of the region’s newest tourism features – the new Arid Recovery tours. This is the beginning of a series of networking activities – the forum meets every month and we’ve got lots more things planned,” he said. The Roxby Downs Tourism Forum discusses and plans regional tourism initiatives and directions. “These tours are a chance to get together with some of the other local tourism operators to dis-
cuss tourism issues for the region while also showcasing Arid Recovery as one of the region’s major tourism features,” forum spokesperson Bree Galbraith said. “Part of the forum’s role is to network within the community and with other tourism ventures in the region to work towards advising council and other operators on what is seen to be the best options for developing local tourism. “On a basic level we’re there as a voice of the community to help advise tourism operators and council on what’s best for tourism in Roxby Downs.” “Anyone can be a member of the Tourism Forum,” she said. For more information, contact forum chair Peter Paisley – 8671 8664.

Set sail for relaxation this summer After months of hard work in the dust and heat of the SA outback there is no greater pleasure than a day aboard ‘The Falie’. Wash off the dust with a dose of sea spray aboard SA’s famous tall ship on a day or twilight cruise. The fantastic crew will keep your glass full while you keep your eyes open for the famous Port River dolphins as you cruise along the river and through Outer Harbour into the gulf. All drinks as well as hors-d’oeuvres and a smorgasbord are included in the ticket price. Snapper, prawns, roast beef, marinated chicken, devilled sausages, salad
platters and garlic bread are all on the menu, as well as draught beer, bottled wines, champagne, tea/coffee and soft drink. Passengers are encouraged to become involved by hoisting the sails and climbing the rigging (a task best performed before too many drinks) and are also free to roam on board. The Falie also hosts a number of fishing charters throughout the year ranging from three to sixday trips – a great escape for those keen on catching a big one. Spaces are limited so it’s best to book ahead – phone 8341 2004. The Falie also caters for group and corporate bookings.

ROXBY DOWNS… More than 400 people participated in the Roxby Downs ‘Spread the Love’ promotion last weekend. Local business and industry threw their support behind the event, donating food, iceblocks and lollies, pavement chalk, prizes and their time, event coordinator Natalie Martin said. “There were a lot of volunteers who made the day work,” she said. “I especially have to mention Amanda Partington, Lilia Miller and Libby Wakelin who supported me all the way through, making lolly bags and painting shirts.” The event - a free day at the pool compete with sausage sizzle, lolly bags and icy poles for the kids – was organised to spotlight the Roxby Downs community during the Channel 7 Sunrise program’s ‘Spread the Love’ competition. Local residents devised various ways of displaying the pink ‘Sunrise 7’ logo and each aspect of the day was filmed for the town’s video-submission - then rushed to Adelaide by plane for hand-delivery. Organisers are now waiting, with fingers crossed, to see whether their submission will appear on Channel 7 to share in a prize of $10,000.

The annual family event which, this year, celebrated the Christmas season, the coming school closure and Australia’s recent performance in the Rugby World Cup raised more than $1700. This year’s international dinner had a ‘western’ theme. This event was the final in a series of fundraising for St Barbara’s Parish School P&F which resulted in a total of more than $10,000 being presented back to the school last week.

Dear Parents & Friends This is our last newsletter for 2003. Again we have had another successful school year with students, staff and involved parents achieving much. Following are some excerpts from my speech to the 7-12 Presentation Night which was held last Tuesday night. I’m sure all who attended would agree what a great night this was and what talented students and staff we have here at this school. This year, our students have continued to show their diverse talents and abilities and have excelled in a number of areas. Our sports teams have done particularly well with our football, netball, swimming, athletics and basketball teams being successful at district and state level. In Performing Arts, our dance team won the Rural Rave dance competition and we once again engaged in the highly successful Newmet dance programme. Academically many of our students have made significant progress even though we have some of the highest student transition rates in the state. We are quietly confident that our senior school results will be the best for some years as early indicators are very promising. Our school’s facilities while always excellent have improved markedly again this year with the latest $1.8 million upgrade. The new senior school block also has provided a quality teaching and learning area for our Year 11’s and 12’s. We have also dedicated extra teaching staff in these years to further enhance the school’s senior school profile in the community by providing better learning opportunities for these students. All of our efforts at this end of the school are beginning to pay dividends as our student numbers are increasing, our provision of face to face lessons have increased, the appointment of school captains as student leaders has been very positive, and we are getting together a team of committed, experienced and successful teachers in this area. Particular congratulations go to this year’s Year 12s who have been great contributors and leaders in our school throughout the year. We will certainly miss them but look to this year’s Year 11s to take up the challenge and be even more successful next year. We wish all our Year 12’s and all students leaving our school all the very best in the future. We hope you will carry fond memories of your time here. Congratulations and thank you to all of the dedicated teaching and support staff who have put in 110 percent for the benefit of all our students this year. Special thanks to Ms Lyndall Craker with Student Voice, Mr Tobias O’Connor IT Coordinator, Mrs Lyn Ferenci the Middle School Coordinator, Ms Emily Lockyer Science/Maths Coordinator, Mrs Jos Fox the 7-12 Assistant Principal and of course Mrs Kath Macalister the Deputy. I thank staff for filling in for me so ably while I have been away from the school working in a District capacity for the last term and a half, particularly Mrs Macalister who was in many respects the acting Principal. Special thanks to the Parents & Friends Committee led by Mrs Sheila Culf for all of their work with fundraising, ground development, uniform ordering and distribution and Market Day organisation. I extend my appreciation to the Governing Council for their commitment to the school, its planning, policy development and general governance. These parents led ably by the Chairperson Mr Peter Wooldridge have all done very well again this year. We also say a big thank you for Western Mining’s continued support each year of our school. They are most generous as their subsidy has help provide new playground equipment, Performing Arts programmes and extra senior school staffing this year. As we look back on another very busy and
Page 16 - Thursday, December 4, 2003
productive year we see the foundation is there once again for us to look forward to 2004 with much optimism. Every effort will continue to be directed towards developing Roxby Downs Area School into a world class learning facility and with your help we can achieve this. R-6 …Congratulations to all involved in the R-6 concert last Tuesday night. Well done and thanks to all students and staff for putting on such great performances. Hopefully some photos from the night will be included in the next Monitor. Special thanks to Mrs Pam Pedler for all of her hard work and leadership this year as Assistant Principal R-2, Ms Renae Methofer for her hard work with Student Voice R-6 and Belinda Ramsey for her work as 3-6 Literacy & Numeracy Coordinator. We also wish Belinda & Ben all the best as they await the arrival of their first child early in January. Barry Wakelin Community Award – Barb Meschede…Congratulations to Barb Meschede who won this year’s Barry Wakelin Community Award. Barb has been a hard working and enthusiastic contributor to our school for many years. She has been Groundsperson here for 5 years and also worked hard for the Parents & Friends Committee. Barb retires to Port Broughton at the end of the year with her husband Manfred. We thank her for all of her contributions to our school and wish her well in the future. Congratulations and Farewell…Congratulations to Mr Marcus Knill who has won the Principal’s position at Kimba Area School for 2004. Mr Knill has contributed greatly to our school over the last 4 years and we wish him well. As always there is a turnover of staff from year to year. While we are sad to see staff leave for new schools this then gives an opportunity for others to take up these challenges here. Congratulations to Mrs Carol Lindner for winning the R-12 Assistant Principal position for Student Services. We look forward to Carol coordinating all Student Services here in the coming 3 years. At this stage we thank the following staff who will be leaving at the year’s end for all of their hard work and commitment to our school. Rosie Willson, Renae Hallion, Renae Methofer, Ali Speight, Marcus Knill, Tobias O’Connor, Concetta De Leo, Marilyn Eastwood, Denise Trewartha, Penny Shepley, Barb Meschede and Brooke Speight. There may be one or two updates as the staffing process continues however we expect this process to continue even into the holidays. Class lists for 2004 will be displayed in the Library the week before school commences in 2004 when staffing positions have been finalised. A New Gera…Well done to Steve Gera and Sam Dalgety on the safe arrival of their new baby Michael. One look at the young fellow and you can see he has more hair than his father! Read-a-thon…Thank you to all students who participated this year raising $1345. This money will be used to buy many great new books for our students. Well done to the highest money raisers: Patrick Leong (Yr 1) $119.45, Alicia Ruta (Rec) $116.00), Maya Hudson (Yr 2) $110.00, Shalise Mallinson (Yr 4) $50.00. Thanks to Wendy Kruger from “Wendys” for the vouchers in support of this. End of Year…School will conclude at 2pm this Friday, December 5. We will have a special end of year assembly at 11.45am in Stadium 1. We hope to farewell those that who are leaving and give out final certificates. Student reports will be sent home with students at 2pm or can be collected from the front office from Monday 8th December until Friday 19th December. School recommences on Tuesday, January 27, 2004. Happy and Safe Christmas Holidays…From all of us here I extend to everyone in our school community all the very best wishes for a safe and happy holiday period. We look forward to the new year with much optimism. Thank you to all who have helped make our school such a great place to be in 2003 - we look forward to your support again in 2004. Jim Michalanney - Principal

Instrumental workshops
On Thursday, November 13, Mr Greg Curnow, our brass and percussion DUCT teacher visited Roxby Downs Area School to conduct faceto-face lessons with his students. He also visited several Yr 3 and 4 classes to recruit new brass students for 2004. Lessons occur once a week over the phone and visits to schools occur once per term. Students are also invited to participate in the annual Music Camp held for Far North schools. If your child is interested in learning the trumpet or trombone, please forward their name to Jenni Nitschke, Music Teacher at RDAS.
Puppet performances On Friday, November, 14 R-7 students attended this year’s final visiting performance “Journey Through the Shadows of Time”. This very special puppet show by the OZO Shadow Theatre was a collection of stories, myths and legends from China, India, South East Asia, Australia, Greece, Turkey and America. Students were also shown how the puppets were made and manipulated. This unique show has been touring for over 30 years to schools around Australia. Jennifer Crone, who is a documentary producer for the ABC, SBS and BBC, and her cinematographer were also with the OZO Theatre. She is currently filming a television documentary on the OZO Brothers. The object of filming their visit was to show them performing in our unique community and show the reactions of the children who come to see the shows. We may see Roxby Downs on national TV!

Year 7-12 student awards
NEITA...Teacher Carol Lindner was recognised for t e a c h i n g excellence this year.
Congratulations to Carol The Governing Council and school community successfully nominated a Roxby Downs Area School NEITA teacher. NEITA stands for “National Excellence In Teaching Awards”. The accolade was announced at an R-12 staff meeting by Deputy Principal, Mrs Kath Macalister, that Mrs Carol Lindner was awarded with the nomination and will officially receive this at tomorrow’s assembly. The purpose of these prestigious Awards is to honour and recognise excellent teachers and highlight the work, not only of individual teachers throughout Australia and New Zealand, but also the team contribution of all teachers in every school. Carol was nominated for three main reasons. Firstly, for her innovation and collaborative leadership in implementing the “Stretch” programme. This is a literacy intervention programme originally designed for Primary students who need extra support. It has expanded to the Middle School this year. Secondly, for Carol’s leadership and support of colleagues, parents and students, far beyond what is expected of a teacher. Thirdly, for Carol’s dedication to students with disabilities and learning difficulties. Carol is now eligible for consideration for one of 150 local merit awards, or one of 100 State and Territory awards to be presented in state capitals in May next year. Congratulations Carol, from the staff and students at Roxby Downs Area School.

The LaN tests were held earlier this year for the Year 3 and 5 students at Roxby Downs Area School. The results were sent home to Parents/ Caregivers last week and are being analysed by teachers to ensure programs and support are put in place for 2004. The LaN test is a means of documenting students’ progress against the state average. The LaN is a ‘snapshot’ of students’ ability in literacy and numeracy under test conditions, conditions that they
aren’t exposed to on a daily basis. For the Year 3s this form of testing is new and therefore the results may not reflect students’ true abilities in these areas. In fact, it is widely agreed that no single form of assessment reflects the real ability or potential of a learner. If Parents are concerned about their child’s overall progress on these tests, they should contact their child’s teacher for further clarification. Belinda Ramsey, Quality Teaching and Learning Coordinator.

Community Board continues NOTICE TO RATEPAYERS to document public opinion Council Rates At present the Roxby Downs Community Board has been formed to develop a Community Vision and Implementation Plan that will guide community actions in Roxby Downs for the next ten years. The Board’s role is to engage the wider community, listen to their concerns and aspirations and record their vision for the future. During the six months consultation period, the Board will be gathering information, views and comments from across the whole community. The feedback and information gathered will be developed into a community vision and a plan of action designed to deliver the vision. A key to the development of the vi-
sion and the action plan is to gain the broadest possible range of comment and ideas from all sections of the community. The Board is using a number of methods which currently include a series of briefings from community leaders on key topics. Thus far, Youth, Alcohol, Housing and the Welcome and Retention of New Arrivals have been discussed. Also planned is a public meeting, while a separate ‘Listening to Roxby’ survey will also be undertaken. Importantly a questionnaire for businesses and community organisations has recently been sent, so if your business or organisation has not received yours, then please contact the Council office for a copy.
Council is concerned that a number of property owners are regularly failing to pay their rates within the prescribed period under the Local Government Act. Council relies on this revenue to upkeep the town – ie street lighting, parks and gardens, roads and general maintenance etc. Following a review and discussion with Council Auditors, any rates that have more than two instalments in arrears will be forwarded to our Collection Agency for recovery. We realise that some people experience financial difficulty and encourage rate payers to contact Bronnie Warren at the Council offices on 8671 0010 to organise a payment arrangement. Fines of two per cent will apply to all arrears.

Night golf swings into action as golf season ends C-GRADE...Sponsor representative George Katsimaglis with last week’s CGrade winner Dave Gibson. November 22 represented the last game of golf for the 18-hole season at Roxby Downs Golf Club, but twilight and summer golf will begin.
B-GRADE...Sponsor representative George Katsimaglis with B-Grade winner, Andrew Wellington, and A-Grade winner Robin Passmore . November 22, 2003 The last game of golf for the 18 hole season of 2003 was sponsored by ITT FLYGT Australia. The sponsors, being very keen rugby union fans, and with Australia in the final of the Rugby World Cup, the night golf was changed to a nine hole Stableford. The golfers were then treated to a feast of nibbles and a barbecue while watching the RWC final on a big screen. But before the entertainment, golf had to be played. The conditions were a lot cooler than earlier in that week. The first group of golfers tee-ed off at 4.30pm in warm but pleasant conditions. Nine holes seemed to suit most of the golfers with good scores recorded. For something different on the day there was a change in novelties. On the first, there was ‘closest to tee’ won by Di Beveridge. The second had ‘best second shot’ won by Robin Passmore only inches form the hole. The fourth had the normal ‘nearest the pin’ won by Pete Lindner. The sixth was the traditional ‘longest drive’ for men and ladies and juniors won by Rod Banks. (Ladies couldn’t stay on fairway). The seventh had the ‘best third shot’ won by Robin Passmore, the shot was pin high but
off the green. The ninth is the ITT Flygt hole and of course there was a ‘longest drive’ on this whole for all grades, won by Rod Banks with a very good drive. The overall results were in Grades and were: Ladies Runner-up - Jana Jamnicky with 17 points. Winner - Di Beveridge with 18 points. C Grade Runner-up - John Freeman with 21 points. Winner David Gibson with 23 points. B Grade Runner-up - Christian McArthur with 18 points. Winner - Andy Wellington with 23 points. A Grade Runner-up - Darren Lloyd with 20 points. Winner - Robin Passmore with 20 points on count-back from Darren. Summer golf will start on Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 7.30 - 8am tee off . The game will be a nine hole Stableford. Summer golf is open to non-members who wish to play. Just turn up or contact Di Beveridge on 0419 648 359. If you want to start earlier than 7.30am please let Di Beveridge know. Twilight golf will also kick off on December 5, 2003. Tee-off from 4:30pm.

Riders have responsibilities on and off-road Junior basketball results Roxby Downs Motorcross president Mel Vanzati is calling for local motorcyclists to be more aware of their responsibilities as riders. “We’ve got a lot of members, and I’d like to think that those paid members are the ones out there being responsible,” she said. The club, which has been operating successfully for more than eight years, boasts a roster of more than 150 junior and senior members. However, Mrs Vanzati believe this represents a little more than half of the motorbike-owners in Roxby Downs and the surrounding region. “And some of those people don’t want to join our club because they want to ride in a more endurance, ‘pony express’ kind of environment,” she said. “But if those riders were willing to come along, join the club, be part of the committee, then maybe we could lobby council and find grants to create that kind of track out here - if there really is the demand for it. The call comes in response to long-term local concerns about offroad bikes on local roads. Axehead Rd resident Barbara Meschede says she has been concerned about the speed of local riders outside her home for the 13 years she has lived in Roxby Downs. “It’s as if there’s no speed limit along that road and everyone wants to be in pole position,” she told The Monitor last week. “I’ve lost two dogs, killed on that road and I’d like to see it policed more or maybe some kind of residential speed limit. “I’d like the area to be a non-bike zone altogether if I could. “We’ve been saying for a long time that, if nothing’s done about it, there would be a death.” In fact, investigations are underway in relation to

partment for Environment and Heritage representatives last month to propose a management plan to minimise environmental disturbance as a result of off-road vehicles. “We try to encourage our members not to ride in the bush because of the obvious environmental impacts, not to mention the dangers,” Mrs Vanzati told The Monitor. “A lot of people used to ride at ‘the funbowl’, on the Andamooka Road, but it can be really dangerous with no set direction for riders - any minute a four-wheel drive or another bike could come over the track, going the opposite way,” she said. With husband Carl and the family’s three adolescent children all regulars on the local track, the Vanzati family supports the club’s strict on-track safety requirements. “You need all your pro-
tection to even get on the track - helmet, gloves, no shorts, no t-shirts, boots.” Mrs Vanzati called on non-club members, with an interest in motorcross, to “join up” and be part of a commitment to cater to the wider dirt bike community in Roxby Downs. “We know those people are out there because we’ve had riders using members’ keys, pulling up the fence at the track, or backing their trailers up and lifting bikes over onto the track,” she said. “We’ve got an AGM coming up and we’re keen to see some new people join the committee and set some new directions for the club. “If there’s a group out there which would really like to see more supercross stuff, or a longer endurance track, then they need to speak up, get active, and join us to push for more facilities.”

Volunteer coaches give basketballers the edge
COACHES...Local volunteer basketball coaches, from left, front, Belinda Petherick (U14 girls), Leanne Kenny (U18 boys), Andrea Freeth (coaches coordinator), back, Joel Roberts (U16 boys) and Gary Sutherland (U16/U18 boys) are part of a 15-year legacy of volunteering which has laid the foundation for a strong tradition of junior basketball. Other volunteers donating their time to be part of Roxby Downs’ Intensive Training and Coaching program include Jason Castle (U16 girls), Nick Backhouse (U16/U18 boys), Donna-Lee Elson (U18 girls), Jack Drefke (U14 boys) and Kathy Lee (U12 boys).
Roxby Downs basketball coordinators are calling for local residents to be part of a 15-year volunteer coaching tradition which has laid the foundation for the community’s long-running success. The ‘Intensive Training and Coaching’ program is administered by volunteer coaches who donate their time each week to help junior basketballers in the region build their skills. These same volunteers facilitate many teams being able to travel for country and state competitions. Local coaching coordinator Andrea Freeth said the association’s team of volunteer coaches were integral to the success of young local basketballers, including Roxby Downs’ five teenaged state representatives named last month. “We still need more volunteers though, especially for our junior girls,” Ms Freeth said. “Without volunteer coaches our kids can’t travel away. “Most country towns don’t have the kind of talent and commitment that we have to call on - there aren’t many programs around like ours. “The kids involved don’t have to travel away or compete to learn more about the sport - the ITC means they can really work on their skills right here in town. “Any child that is registered with junior basketball locally can be part of the program. “After 15 years, what we’re seeing now is that kids like Jason Castle and Belinda Petherick who came up through the program as players are passing their skills onto a new generation as coaches.” Ms Freeth said she would be interested in hosting a coaching clinic locally if enough parents and players are interested in gaining their Level 0 coaching accreditations. ITC trainings are held on Friday nights and Sundays. For more information about the program, or to register your interest for a local coaching clinic, please phone Andrea Freeth - 8671 1561.

Community vetoes football merger A proposal for a local amalgamated football team to join the Spencer Gulf Football League was met with a resounding no from the community last week. A public meeting was attended by more than 80 representatives of local football teams on Monday, November 24. The meeting was called to gain community input for the proposal after it was presented to the Woomera Districts Football League committee earlier in the month. Originally, the proposal was devised by members of the Olympic Dam Football Club in response to concerns about local player availability. However, after no clear decision from the Devils committee, and concerns for the greater local league if OD moved to the SGFL, the proposal was opened to the four existing W&DFL teams. ODFC president Peter Lindner, in his presentation to the community forum, welcomed the proposal as an opportunity to financially secure football in the Woomera and Districts region, an opportunity for more reliable player availability, and a chance for local footballers to hone their skills in a more competitive league. “If we had all this support, this supporter base, behind one team rather than four, then we’d be very successful,” he said. “And obviously, there’s greater opportunities from sponsorship with a single, larger ‘super team’.” However, the proposal met with vocal and definite opposition. Long-term Andamooka Football Club supporter Kathy Wilby voiced her concerns that a merger would erase the individual histories and allegiances of the existing clubs. Other concerns raised included travel time to and from
the Spencer Gulf, and fewer opportunities for the region’s keen but less skilled footballers to take the field during the season. Woomera and Districts Football League president Anthony Howie told The Monitor this week that the league committee officially voted against the proposal at a meeting last week. Lindner assured league and clubs alike that ODFC would not proceed with the proposal to join the SGFL without wider public support. “If the community says no then we’ll just stay right here and work on what we’ve got,” he said. Lindner and Howie both welcomed the swell of support for a public meeting as a chance to highlight the league’s need for greater, practical support at a local level. ODFC committee member Shane Eastwoo also called for greater local support at the rmeeting. “There’s been a lot of talk and no action in this league since 1995,” Eastwood said in his address to the meeting. “There’s a proposal on the table and if we don’t like it then it’s up to everyone to put the effort in to making this league work better.” The public meeting, also coincided with talks within W&DFL about an opportunity for Coober Pedy to join the local league. Howie said the league had been approached by representatives from Coober Pedy but the proposal was declined by the W&DFL committee. “We considered the proposal but we weren’t happy with the terms,” he said. “It’s something we’d consider in the future if there was a new proposal.” Mr Howie assured The Monitor that, to his knowledge all four local clubs were financially viable and able to field full teams in the 2004 season.
