A day to celebrate FAR NORTH…Across the region last week, local communities acknowledged the many citizens and events that make the Far North such a unique place to live, at the annual Australia Day Awards.

In Woomera, the community recognised several local residents.

“On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate what’s great about Australia and being Australian,” Woomera Board chairman Peter Rocco said in his address to crowds at Breen Park during Woomera’s Australia Day celebrations. “Ït’s the day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.”

Long-time Woomera resident and local businessman Peter Martin was named Citizen of the Year 2005.

Mr Martin has lived in Woomera for around 20 years and had a long association with Defence and other support businesses, before taking over local building business Wagnitz Building.

Mr Martin kept on local staff and built the business up until it grew into one of the biggest employers in Woomera.

Over the past 20 years Mr Martin has supported local clubs, sporting organisations, schools and charity initiatives.

In contrast, Woomera’s Youth Citizen of the Year 2005 was awarded to relative new-comer Matt Wasley who, in the past 12 months, has been instrumental in re-forming the Woomera CFS cadets.

Woomera Board recognised the efforts of the Woomera Area School and the Eldo Hotel in organising the event and ensuring its success.

In addition to the traditional Australia Day Awards, the Woomera community also recognised Sheryn Clarke – an active member of the Woomera Board, a driving force

behind the new Woomera Community Centre, a major contributor to the Woomera Youth Centre and a member of the Outback Health Advisory Committee – as well as Stuart Knox – former chair of the Woomera Board, a personal supporter of many local events and initiatives, as well as a driving force behind the new and improved Gibber Gabber.

In Roxby Downs, council spokesman Trevor Kroemer presented awards to long-time locals Mark Beenham and Youth Citizen of the Year Matthew Rowney.

Mr Beenham was recognised for his personal commitment and financial contributions to youth employment, training and education programs at local schools, the region’s sporting bodies and community events.

Matthew Rowney was named Youth Citizen of the Year primarily for his dedication and the time he commits to local emergency services such as the Roxby Downs CFS. The light-hearted part of the event was followed by some general appreciation awards for community contributors – including CWA volunteers Mona Flint and Klara Loffler, Sister Patricia Hogan for her participation in so many local services and events, local handyman Peter Elsegood who has handled many a hot an dusty job for the community, and all-round volunteer Marie Greagen.

Pat Edwards and ‘Shave for a Cure’ volunteer Adam Rathjen received a friendly ‘roast’ for their year’s escapades.

Tom Radford was recognised for his role in keeping up the water supply to Andamooka, even on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Judith Ingliss was recognized for her tireless work with Frontier Services – as fitness instructor, busdriver and companion.

While Debbie Buran received a certificate of appreciation as a driving force behind the community’s netball and basketball teams.

However, despite an abundance of local personalities who have donated their time and expertise to the community, Andamooka’s Citizen of the Year Awards were awarded to two well-known Andamooka women – Pat Katnich and Naomi Campbell.

“Following the fire that put the library out of bounds for quite a while, this lady has been instrumental in negotiating new buildings and getting through the red tape to get the library up and running again.

“Simultaneously she has made her way through the red tape associated with the community pool and has organised volunteer supervisors for the community pool and the training necessary for those volunteers before the pool can be opened again.”

OLYMPIC DAM… WMC employees, including employees at Olympic Dam, are taking a little less in their pay, this month, to give a little more to victims of natural disasters in SA and Asia.

Following the introduction of a payroll deduction donation initiative, WMC employees have donated $21,000 to the Australian Red Cross Tsunami Appeal.

This employee donation comes in addition to the $100,000 already donated by WMC Resources in December 2004.

Additionally, WMC employees have committed $20,000 to the Red Cross South Australian Bushfires Appeal.

In recognition of the support offered so far, WMC will match employee donations to both appeals, dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000.

WMC’s combined employee and company contribution to the appeals so far, totals more than $162,000.

Change isn’t always fun and new beginnings are rarely easy.

Victims of both the Boxing Day tsunami in Asia, and closer-to-home, the families affected by the Eyre Peninsula bushfires, are an extreme example of this.

But change doesn’t just come after a disaster, it’s a natural part of life that keeps us from spiralling down into stagnation.

Our littlest locals know all about scary new beginnings this week.

My daughter started school in Roxby Downs this year, after completing her first six months at Gladstone where my family and I had intended to start our new beginning.

But things changed, and here I am again, back at my desk at The Monitor watching my daughter don the uniform for a school I attended almost 15 years ago.

We’re a family that is used to change, even thrives on it, and Roxby Downs has always been a good place for us so this is a new beginning we’ve welcomed.

But our region is also looking at some changes, and new beginnings, with the Community Plan and the Community Board’s recommendations soon to be unveiled to local stakeholders.

Not all of the decisions ahead will be easy ones – but, like all starts, here is an opportunity to take good ideas and positive intentions and build a strong foundation for everyone involved.

The New Year is a time for resolutions and, let’s face it, by February most of us have already broken most of them.

But if we start well, with good intentions... while we’re unlikely to end up where we planned to, we’re almost guaranteed to end up somewhere we can be happy.

Trust me – I know what I’m talking about.

Embrace change, keep your eyes focussed on the future, and we can all work for something a little stronger, a little more positive than what we’re leaving behind.

Far North police report On January 28, 2005, a 13year-old Roxby Downs youth was arrested for serious criminal trespass and theft.

Police are currently investigating a report of an assault received on January 28, 2005.

On the same day, in an unrelated incident, a 16year-old Roxby Downs youth was reported for possessing liquor.

A 26-year-old man from Roxby Downs was arrested for speeding, driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle and for driving while under suspension on January 27.

On January 26, 2005, a 28-year-old man from Roxby Downs was arrested for assault family member, property damage and breaching a domestic violence restraining order.

Police are investigating the report of a shop front window on Richardson place being smashed on January 25.

A 13 year old youth from Roxby Downs was arrested for aggravated serious criminal trespass and theft, in a separate incident, on the same day.

Roxby Downs police arrested a 36-year-old man for refusing breath analysis, hindering and resisting arrest.

WALK FOR MORE...Local volunteers hit the road to raise money for victims of the Boxing Day Asian tsunami appeal.

A 20-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported for assault and breaching a barring notice on January 18, 2005.

ROXBY DOWNS…The road to recovery for victims of the Boxing Day tsunami in Asia will be a long and hard one.

But in Roxby Downs and Woomera last week, local volunteers faced their own long, hard road as part of the Walk for More to Build and Restore.

A team of 10 volunteers left Roxby Downs just after midnight on Saturday, January 20, 2005, started the long walk to Woomera to raise money for the tsunami appeal.

“We knew the walk would be tough but we didn’t know just how tough it would be,” event coordinator Rev. Tom Beever told The Monitor.

“I’ve done amateur boxing, I’ve fought in the ring, I’ve been involved in so many things in my life but I’d never been as exhausted as I was when I got to Woomera that first day.

“We fought the wind from post office to post office – it took us 14 hours to get there and was really hard.”

It was the support of both communities – Roxby Downs and Woomera – that buoyed the team for their 11-hour walk home the following day.

“We were farewelled at the post office at midnight with balloons and around 30 people to wish us luck,” Rev. Beever said.

“When we arrived, we were so sore and tired that we seriously thought about whether we were coming back.

“But on the way back we relayed the whole way, with no more than two on the road at one time – it feels better to say we all did it together.

“There were people who joined us for parts of the walk, who met us in Woomera or as we arrived in Roxby Downs.

“From the walkers’ perspective it was just wonderful to have members of the community to wish us well - that showed us just how real the community feeling behind the whole thing was.”

This community support was again echoed on the following Saturday morning when around 70 people, including children, joined the Roxby Downs community walk.

Also on January 18, police received a report of non-aggravated serious criminal trespass from a Roxby Downs resident whose house was broken into.

A report of property damage was received from the Roxby Downs Area School on January 17, 2005, where damage was caused to sprinklers and a broken window.

A report of theft was received on January 17, 2005, from a Roxby Downs resident whose wheelie bin was stolen from Maireana Circuit.

On January 17, 2005, a Roxby Downs resident reported an assault which allegedly occurred in the car park off Richardson Place and the adjacent service road.

Police are investigating the theft of a BMX bicycle stolen from a front yard on Aquila Boulevard on January 17, 2005.

The long walk home “I think the morning walk was a true reflection of what we wanted to achieve with the bigger walk, because it was a real community event.

“There were little children on three-wheeler bikes and kids on scooters, dogs on leashes, babies in strollers, people walking holding hands – it was just brilliant.”

Participants shared in a moment of silence, following the walk.

“That minute seemed so powerful that we just let the silence go on,” Rev. Beever said.

The Saturday morning walk was followed by a fundraiser evening at the Roxby Downs Community Club where local DJ ‘Flash’ Gordon Walters donated his time and RoxFM DJs collected donations from club-goers.

Roxby Downs Council, police and catering company ESS also showed their support with donations of food, drinks and support for walk participants, as well as vehicle escorts.

Fundraising for the appeal continues this week.

“We’ve still got cheques coming in and we just want to thank everybody for their contributions,” Rev. Beever said.

“We do have T-shirts for sale $25 each and stubbieholders for $10 at Wendy’s SupaServe Store - If we sell all those shirts and stubbie holders, which were donated by Ken and Val Lamb, we’ll have more than $3500 from sales alone.

“People will continue to shake the tin for donations so please keep an eye out when you go shopping for a chance to support the appeal.

“Already, the walk alone has raised more than $20,000 that will complement the larger donation from the Roxby Downs Community Club earlier in the month.

“Other donations have also been pledged by local businesses and this support represents a big commitment from the Roxby Downs community.

“We’re grateful for every cent that has been given – it will all go to the victims of the tsunami in Asia.

“It’s wonderful to think that we in Roxby Downs, as a community, can provide that kind of support.”

FAR NORTH AND OUTBACK…The Outback Health and Advisory Committee is calling on Roxby Downs, Olympic Dam and Andamooka residents to have a say in how their health services are coordinated.

The Outback Health Advisory Committee discusses and identifies health needs and issues within the Outback and Far North, communicating directly with the Board of Directors of the Port Augusta Hospital and Regional Health Services.

The group now boasts a team of local medical professionals and community representatives including representatives of the Roxby Downs and Woomera Health Services, Roxby Downs Medical Practice, Community Health, Frontier Nursing, WMC, APOMA and the Woomera Board.

However, vacancies still exist for community representation from Olympic Dam, Roxby Downs and Andamooka.

The committee has been slowly growing since early 2004 and is now addressing many of the region’s health needs and initiatives.

“One of the things we are looking at now is the ‘Strengthening our Families’ program and how to continue that service, maybe even expand it,” committee exoficio Janine Connell told The Monitor last week.

“One of the issues that has already been highlighted, with our Woomera and Pimba representation so strong, is the changing population of Woomera where young families are demanding more and more infant and parenting services.

“It’s been beneficial already for those communities of Woomera and Pimba to raise the profile of their own local issues.

“In contrast, Andamooka’s population is much older and has a whole different set of needs. “It’s well recognised that the high-demand needs of Roxby Downs are related to children and young families whereas Andamooka’s needs are substantially different.

“It’s important that the different community needs are well-represented on the committee because it is a direct link to the governing body of our health services.”

FRIENDLY FACE...Fr Brian Mathews has taken up parish responsibilities for the Catholic community of the Far North this month.

FAR NORTH…The Far North Catholic community welcomed the arrival of Fr Brian Mathews last month, who takes over the parish responsibilities for Roxby Downs, Woomera and Andamooka from Fr Jim Monaghan.

Fr Brian comes to the region from Loxton in the Riverland where he spent the past three years. However, Fr Brian is very familiar with the Roxby Downs region where he has been visiting regularly for the past two years.

As a metallurgist by trade, before he entered the priesthood, Fr Brian worked for BHP and visited Olympic Dam in its very earliest years.

“It’s quite amazing – this is a really great place,” Fr Brian told The Monitor last week.

“The people have been very friendly. I hope I’m here for a nice long time – this is a place I’d really like to settle down in.”

Roxby Rehab Centre welcomes new team ROXBY REHAB…Kristin Bannear and physiotherapist Scott Humphries are the new faces (and hands) of Roxby Downs Rehabilitation Centre. The pair recently moved to Roxby Downs from Berri, in the Riverland, and are looking forward to getting out of the clinic and travelling around the region.

Clean Up Australia Day ROXBY DOWNS…Roxby Downs residents can join thousands of Australians in cleaning up their own back yards all across the country next month, as part of KESAB’s Clean Up Australia Day initiative.

Participants can register at the Roxby Downs Lions Park at 10am Sunday, March 6.

Cleaners will focus on the dunes between Myall Grove Caravan Park and Dunes Estate and Olympic Way between Axehead Road and Burgoyne Street.

In addition to the council effort, local residents can clean up their own yards and favourite community centres – just register your efforts with the Council on Clean Up Australia Day. ROXBY DOWNS…A local appeal for victims of the Eyre Peninsula bushfires has been overwhelmed by the generousity of the local community. Roxby Downs resident Denise Trewartha and a team of friends and supporters last month transported more than eight skip bins full of donated goods, clothing and furniture to the Eyre Peninsula, as well as two trailer-loads and two car-loads. “The community’s support has been overwhelming,” Mrs Trewartha told The Monitor. However, aid agencies on the Eyre Peninsula have been inundated with contributions and, as a result, Mrs Trewartha will no longer be accepting local donations.

The year ahead for R-2s...

The holidays are over, a new school year is here. How exciting it will be, let me hear you cheer!

2005 will hold so much, so many things in store. Many programs we’ll start again, to make a busy year for sure!

RBL with Mrs Harvey, I wonder what we’ll learn. All classes will visit her, I wonder when it’s your turn.

Play Boxes we’ll use once more, they are so much fun. Dress Ups, Doctors, Builders and Bank, which is your favourite one?

Literacy Blocks each morning, bring out the glitter and glue. We will read our new sight words and learn to spell them too.

Miss C-C is ready, to dance the lessons away. Drama she will also do, maybe you’ll learn a play.

Mrs Ramsey in PE, will run and run and run. You will love to learn new skills, what fun, fun, fun.

Indonesian you will do, with Bu Haddock I’ve heard. You will learn about the culture and the odd Indonesian word.

Peer Support with our buddy class, we’ll practice the 5Cs, we will use these each and every day, it’s as simple as saying please.

Just a reminder what they are, let me refresh your mind. They make our school such a great place, if you use them you will find.

Let’s use all five, and try very hard, to make a wonderful year. And take on the challenges that come your way, with enthusiasm show no fear!

However we are mindful that there is hardly anyone who has not been affected in some way by these events. Our sympathies go out to all those who have suffered and it is our intention, as a school, to strive to do something positive for these people to support them in their time of need.

Due to the large transition of students in and out of this community we can never be sure of our class numbers before the year beginning. Therefore there may be some unavoidable changes to classes or their structure although we strive to avoid any disruption if possible. If this is the case then parents will be contacted as early as possible this week.

Facilities…Over the holidays we have installed fifty new computers and some new switches. Shortly most of our network should have gigabyte connection which means it will be very fast. These new computers were placed in the Primary Computer room, the Library, and some teacher preparation rooms. Our network of over 200 computers is of the highest standard. We also have some computers for sale. Please contact the Front Office staff or Yvonne Pattenden if interested.

We also have new carpet in H Block and C Block. We also had I Block and B Block painted. Sometime this year we will be embarking on a whole school exterior paint.

Change and innovation All educators are accustomed to reflecting on their work periodically and especially at the end of a school year. I was reflecting recently about the curriculum offerings and how the opportunities for students have increased in the four plus years that I have been at this school.

Curriculum development and review is an ongoing feature of school life. It is never completed, however, because it needs to be responsive to changing times and clients needs.

A sign of a healthy curriculum is where teachers actively seek to take on new curriculum and students request new curriculum in healthy numbers. This year, for example: • Media Studies will be taught as a formal subject up to and including Year 12.

• At year nine students will learn about Radio media and broadcasting.

• The Arts program now includes Art, Craft, Photography, Drama and Dance either in the Mainstream or through the Friday afternoon Futures/Clubs program.

• Technology Studies in the Middle school will include the traditional Wood skills and Sculpture.

Other subject options available in the 7-12 cohort are • Information Technology in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11.

• Both Food and Clothing subjects in years 8 and 9, leading through Home Economics to Food and Hospitality in year 12.

A well documented and thoroughly prepared curriculum exists in the Maths, Science, English and Society & Environment subject areas and teachers in these subject areas are enthusiastically developing an excellent resource base to support students in their learning.

In the Reception to Year 6 cohort curriculum diversity has also improved with additional time and energy being applied to the key areas of literacy and numeracy acquisition.

Time continues to be dedicated to the ongoing provision of a stimulating curriculum for students with high intellectual potential.

The work done on Play Based Learning in the junior primary cohort will continue and be further implemented this year. Entry level assessment will allow us to build a learning and assessment profile for each individual student.

The Student Services Cohort, established at the start of 2004, supports the wellbeing and curriculum development of students, particularly those with identified learning needs.

Both cohorts are in the process of implementing and trialing new homework provisions.

Staff training and development activities for this year will be planned to continue improvements in the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning.

Junior Arts Prize open to the public ROXBY DOWNS…The work of some of Roxby Downs’ youngest artists is now on display as part of the first annual Roxby Downs Junior Arts Prize exhibition.

The exhibition was officially opened at Roxby Downs Art Gallery on Tuesday, when the work of almost 30 young artists was displayed for the public.

The opening was attended by the young artists, their families, and community representatives.

“We’ve been very impressed by the response,” Roxby Downs Cultural Precinct coordinator Mikaela Aldenhoven told The Monitor last week.

“We’ve had almost 30 entrants based around the ‘Outback, Mining and Families’ theme.

“The entries have been very imaginative – from didgeridoos to dioramas.”

The Junior Arts Prize is a precursor to the Roxby Downs Arts Prize exhibition which will be officially opened at the Outback Fringe Festival later this year.

Playgroup will be held in the primary school’s CPC classroom every Friday, from 9.30am. “It’s great to see the ideas that people come up with and what they send to each other but I’m not feeling very romantic by the end of it all,” she told The Monitor.

“Sales for Valentines Day are four or five times bigger than on Mothers Day – our next biggest event.

“This is the seventh Valentine’s Day I’ve spent in Roxby Downs and the whole family doesn’t get a break – my husband Carl delivers the flowers and our three kids are put to work packing the car, stripping and wiring the flowers.

JASON STRINGER...Local filmmaker and webdesigner Jason Stringer on the set of his latest film - Said & Done which will feature at the 2005 Outback Fringe Festival.

Local filmmaker to feature at festival Roxby Downs’ own Jason Stringer is an aspiring film maker, sometime musician and songwriter, web designer and film critic.

Jason grew up in Roxby Downs and attended Roxby Downs Area School as first a student, and then a staff member where he met his now-wife Kerry Stringer.

Today he has turned to a new career in public relations, but outside of working hours Jason’s passion is still films.

Jason will launch his latest creation – Said and Done – at the Outback Film Festival in March this year.

The film, which addresses a series of teenage issues, is the latest in a series of local documentaries and fictional films.

Jason’s love of films has seen him dabble his toes in a lot of genres – but it is in horror that he has already gained notoriety.

When his Exorcist fan site captainhowdy.com first gained popularity, it attracted the recognition of film creators Warner Bros who flew Jason to Rome to visit

the set of Exorcist: The Beginning.

The site has now been recognised as the most popular Exorcist website of all time – outstripping even the authorised Warner Bros site.

As a result, Jason will visit Washington DC late this year or early 2006 to talk at an Exorcist conference.

“It’s amazing the way I’ve gone from fan to film spokesman,” he told The Monitor.

“I’ll finally get to meet Linda Blair face-to-face, although we’ve talked lots of times, and I’ll be speaking to the crowds and answering questions from fans.”

The success of captainhowdy.com has now led to a second website dedicated to the wider horror film genre – www.bloodynews.com.

This website has seen Jason link with other horror buffs around the world who provide articles, interviews and film reviews.

Works in Progress...Various footpaths have been inspected for risk management purposes including Arcoona Street.

A study of town amenity and design modelling of infrastructure has been undertaken in conjunction with the Adelaide University.

An evaluation has been undertaken of the design of infill blocks in the new Southern Subdivision.

No submissions concerning Draft Community Land Management Plans have been received. As required under the Local Government Act plans have been formally adopted.

There will be road closures in the southern section of the town to connect up services to new allotments. The length of time each closure will take depends on the type of, and how many services are to be put into place. Council does not expect the roads to be closed any longer than one day per road crossing. Council regrets any inconvenience. A letterbox drop will be made prior to inform residents effected by this work. There may be interruptions to water/electricity and Telstra services.

The remaining outstanding light at the Hermit Street roundabout has now been installed.

Tonkin & Associations are currently working in a consultancy capacity on a program to upgrade Roxby Downs’ waste water treatment.

Upcoming Works...Sewer pump stations to be cleaned and some to be upgraded.

Digital Data Loggers will gather information relating to the town water supply and sewer pump station A area and also Pump Station D area.

Some machinery is being overhauled at the sewer lagoons.

As part of a maintenance program, a few water meters will be changed in the older part of town, starting at Axehead Road.

Council will be relocating a high voltage switch on Burgoyne Street to assist access for the property owner.

We are also replacing a street light feed cable in front of the Hospital on Burgoyne Street. Both above jobs require considerable excavations and we apologise for any inconvenience.

Business Signage...Local businesses have been invited to be part of new tourism signage in Roxby Downs. Council and the Roxby Downs Business Forum have thrown their support behind new tourism signage at the corner of Olympic Way and Burgoyne Street and on the public toilet block in Richardson Place. Designs echoing the current Wilmap distributed through the Roxby Downs Visitor Information Centre have been approved. Signage sales are now open. Electricity Cent A Meters...Council has purhcased five analyser meters for customer service purposes. These meters are available for hire from Council for a small fee. Meters will assist customers to monitor their power usage.

Rates...Second quarterly rate payments were due on 16 December 2004. Fines of 2% will be charged for late payments.

Electricity Water Sewerage Rates & Tariffs...New rates and tariffs for water, sewerage and electricity services came into effect from the 1 January 2005. These will be included in the next relevant monthly and quarterly billing run and for any final accounts.

Electricity and Water Accounts...Meters have now been read with water accounts due for payment on 15 February 2005, electricity accounts are due for payment on 18 February 2005.

Bushfire Prevention...The recent fires in the Eyre Penninsula present a timely reminder to residents of the importance of taking adequate fire prevention actions of premises and being generally careful with potential fire sources such as cigetrette butts, motor bikes and other mechanical equipment in our hot arid climate.

Residents are requested to keep areas surrounding their homes free from litter, dry leaves and any other combustible materials.

Bushfire season commences 1 November 2004 – 31 March 2005.

Permits can be obtained from the Council office during this period.

Fire Regulations and booklets are on display at the Council office.

Fireworks...Fireworks are only allowed to be set off by a pyro-technician with the appropriate permits. Fines are applicable if not adhered to.

Mosquito Control...Residents are reminded to throw away any unwanted containers which hold water – old tyres, drums, place sand in pot plant bases, to seal or cover all openings in raintwater tanks and to ensure that roof gutters are not holding water. Wear loose clothing , apply insect repellent that contains DEET (Diethyl Toluamide) and use mosquito coils for outdoor activities.

WOOMERA FITNESS COURSES…Woomera Fitness Centre is calling for interest in a fitness course outlining the basics of fitness, from warm-ups and correct breathing to care and correct usage of equipment. These courses are expected to be of especial interest to youth and residents who are only just starting on their own fitness regimes. Tennis players hit the courts TENNIS…Around 70 people attended Roxby Downs Tennis Association’s grading day on January 22, 2005.

Organisers were impressed by the response.

The competition starts on Friday, February 4, for seniors who play Fridays and Saturdays from 7pm to 9pm.

Four teams of 10 people, with four subs, will compete in the senior rounds.

Division 1 and 2 (Under 14s) will play

at 6pm on Saturdays, while a beginners’ round will be held on Saturdays at 5.30pm to 6pm.

A total of 38 junior players have registered, however, junior places in the summer competition are still available.

For those who missed out on the senior selections, register your interest for a winter competition on Sundays by phoning Michelle Thomson – ph 8671 1384.

New season of Roxby Downs bowls The new season of Roxby Downs Bowling Club night owls started last Friday night. A total of 14 teams nominated and turned up for the draw for the new season.

All teams were keen to get started even though the weather was not the best.

Last season’s winners drew the bottom ranked team from last season for their first game again and got off to a flying start winning 82 to 38.

Most of the other games for the night were reasonably close. The following people won a prize for a resting toucher; John King, Tara Jordan, and Julie Darling.

Owlets (junior night owls) is also available on Friday nights from 6.30pm to

7.30pm for any children from nine years old up to 16 years.

All welcome to come and try out playing lawn bowls.

Wednesday night ‘scroungers’ is still going and is open to anyone to come down and try out.

We have some great social bowls and it a different way to learn how to play bowls.

FAR NORTH…Far North and Outback residents have been called on to highlight their sporting and recreation needs for a regional strategy.

The SA Government has initiated an Outback Regional Recreation, Sport and Open Space Strategy in order to develop recreation and sporting facilities and initiatives throughout the Far North and Outback.

The Strategy will provide region-wide direction for providing and managing open space, sport and recreation programs, services and facilities.

The Outback has many features and resources that are highly valued by residents and visitors alike.

The strategy will aim to improve the management and development of them, resulting in the ongoing provision of a broad range of recreation and sport opportunities throughout the region.

For the purposes of this project, the Outback has been defined into six sub-regions encompassing the following townships: 1. Marla, Oodnadatta, William Creek, Coober Pedy, Mintabie.

2. Innamincka, Mungerannie, Lyndhurst, Maree.

3. Andamooka, Roxby Downs, Olympic Dam, Woomera, Pimba, Glendambo, Kingoonya, Tarcoola.

4. Copley, Leigh Creek, Beltana, Nepabunna, Igawarta, Arkaroola.

5. Yunta, Manna Hill, Olary, Cockburn.

The Office for Recreation and Sport will work with a number of partners involved in the strategy, highlighting the regional importance of the project.

These partners include: The Outback Areas Community Development Trust, the District Council of Coober Pedy, the Office for Recreation and Sport, the Department of Transport, Urban Planning and the Arts (Planning SA); and the Office for Regional Affairs.

Organisers have heralded the project as “a wonderful opportunity to think broadly about how facilities and initiatives can benefit the region as well as individual communities.”

Collins Anderson Management (CAM) has recently been appointed to develop the strategy and it is anticipated that the project will be completed by May this year. As part of this process CAM will seek to engage local communities to identify the range of local and regional issues and opportunities that need to be considered.

This process will include public workshops to be held shortly in the region with community groups, sporting clubs and associations and local residents.

Relevant Local and State Government departments will also be consulted.

Far North and Outback residents are urged to “take this opportunity to be involved and contribute to determining the direction for recreation, sport and open space in the Outback’”.

CRICKET...Olympic Dam’s Matthew Watkins and Nigel Shinnick watch on as Ryan Briggs bowls one in for the Wanderers on Sunday. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed to Sunday when rain washed out the original match.

However, Sunday saw the Wanderers handicapped, fielding just nine men which cost them dearly in the batting.

Woomera at home defeated Rogues by 38 runs in their day/night encounter to boost their chances of playing in the finals.

It was only their second win if the year but their opponents have not been any more successful leaving both teams on equal points with four matches to go.

The home side batted first and Wally Broome carried his bat to record 72 not out in Woomera’s total of 4/158 assisted by 37 from Chris Pillar while Sam Nethery (2/ 22) and Paul Trotta (1/38) were successful with the ball.

Despite having one of their better sides of the season Rogues were unable to reel in the total and were all out for a disappointing120 and now need to tread carefully to avoid the wooden spoon for the second successive season.

Trotta top scored with 32 and Nathan Promnitz made 21 while Mick Ingold and Andy Searle dismissed two batsmen each.

Woomera 4/158 Broome 72no, Pillar 37 Nethery 2/22, Trotta 1/38 defeated Rogues 120 Trotta 32, Promnitz 21 Ingold 2/8 Searle 2/26 Olympic Dam maintained their perfect record over Wanderers for the season so far with a comfortable 44 win at Roxby Downs oval on Sunday morning.

The contest was scheduled for Saturday morning but the weather intervened and both teams agreed to return the next morn-

ing.

Unfortunately Wanderers were only able to field nine men and paid the penalty while fielding first, and later when batting.

Olympic Dam started slowly held together by another watchful innings from opener Brian Partington who finished on 59 while Craig Nichols returned to form with a more than useful 30 runs to his name.

Andy Wellington 28 and Paul Kemp 17 not out upped the tempo after a drinks score of 2/65 to expose a weakened and tiring attack and help the Devils to final score of 9/ 182.

Brent Harper took five wickets but was too expensive in doing so while newcomer Damian Smith used the new ball well for his 2/20 from eight overs.

The Swaggies lost early wickets to be 3/51

until Garry Briggs and Smith set the innings alight with a sixty five run partnership that threatened to derail Olympic Dam winning aspirations.

However two overs changed the game completely as Kemp dismissed Briggs on 38 and Wellington followed up to claim Smith for a well-made 57.

Kemp 3/22 wrapped up most of what was remaining, Wellington bagged another two to take his season tally to 22 victims and Greg Roberts 2/19 made the early inroads wit the new ball.

Slow start to junior basketball season BASKETBALL…Roxby Downs’ junior basketball first games of the season had an early start on Saturday.

The pre-term start saw numbers lower than normal for the first game of the season.

All prospective players are encouraged to check the rosters, available at Roxby Downs Recreation Centre, for a fresh start this coming Saturday.

“Saturday was a slow start but things

are set to ramp up with school starting this week,” coordinator Andrea Freeth told The Monitor.

“Sub-minis will be playing again this year.

“Sub-minis is for five and six-yearolds – kids can come along, learn some skills and have a fun game.”
