More than 85 percent of the population in Roxby Downs get their information about the community from their community newspaper, The Monitor.

The Monitor was the major source for all information for the community according to an independent survey on community attitudes conducted on behalf of BHP Billiton Olympic Dam by University of Queensland’s Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining.

The results of the Community Perceptions Survey were delivered in a presentation to the Roxby Downs Community Board on Monday night

by BHP Billiton Community Relations Manager Olympic Dam, Vivienne Lambert.

The Monitor newspaper was also the most read in Woomera and Andamooka.

The newspaper’s Managing Editor, Les Rochester said the survey results were a vindication of the direction the newspaper has taken during the past 12 months.

“We’ve tried to make the newspaper relevant, informative with local, regional, state and even international news to cater for the diversity of our population,” he said.

“The population of Roxby Downs and the regional centres have embraced the newspaper because of its extensive coverage of local events and the support it puts back into the community through sponsorships.

“The results are a testament to our small band of hardworking staff who take exceptional pride in the weekly production of Roxby Downs’ only locally based community newspaper,” Mr Rochester said.

The survey also showed that Roxby Downs’ residents say that more support for youth activities are a priority among services and facilities for the town.

While the references to youth support were for the most part generalised, the survey found that the high number of responses indicated this to be an area of substantial interest and concern for the community.

BHP Billiton’s Vice President of Government and Community Relations, Kym Winter-Dewhirst said the feedback about youth and other services for the most part reflected general assumptions about facilities in Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera.

“While provision of facilities for youth is not our responsibility we have a strong focus on supporting youth activities in our Community Development program.

“We have an ongoing schools support program, have supported the Scouts and have placed a strong emphasis on bringing our Corporate youth programs such as the Reach youth leadership program and the Port Power community youth program to the area.

Sitting across from this 34 year old man having a coffee and a chat just seemed so surreal considering the action packed life he has led.

This drillers off-sider, with the visor of his yellow safety helmet flicked back up, sat and outlined the different tastes he has had of life through the various jobs and experiences he has encountered.

“The people, mate, they keep you on a high. They are so different and varied and come out with some amazing things,” he smiled.

“This book is basically about a fun filled journey from A to B but with all the twists and turns that present themselves along the way.

“It’s about the choices you make,

decide to take,” he said.

“You’re going to laugh, you’re going to smile, you may even shed a tear or two, but one thing is for sure, this is the book that will take you on a trip like no other.

“It’s one of the great things about people, you just can’t size them up.

You can’t know their story until you talk to them,” he mused.

“I was in this truck near Kalgoorlie, going over some very dangerous bumpy terrain so to take my mind of it I started talking to the driver, to get his story.

“Low and behold he was a former state speedway champion, which put me at ease straight away, and I began to enjoy the journey because you couldn’t be in safer hands than that, right,” Trevor questioned.

His book is self published through Amazon.com but there are copies available at the local newsagent, Camp One and Lavericks.

“It’s an amazing process to write a book, thousands of hours, but it’s pure pleasure,” Trevor stated.

“This one of course took ten years to write because it’s a ten year road map of a portion of my life and the people I’ve met, but now I’ve caught the bug truly and am now 50 pages into my second book. “ It’s titled ‘Natural Born Drillers’ and looks at what life is like on the rigs and the characters that think nothing of working in 50 degree heat, on 12 hours shifts, lifting red hot shafts.

“Yeah it’s about the characters.

Here let me sign the book for you, I’m due on shift out in the bush on the mine lease within the hour, so I’ll catch you again.”

And with that, he jumped into the waiting drillers truck and headed out along the Borefield road.

Bus runs out of fuel on the track

Two fare paying passengers on an Adventure Tours trip through the remote regions of South Australia’s outback walked 40 kilometres to William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track to raise the alarm that its bus had run out of fuel.

They were accompanied by the bus driver and walked all night after they ran out of fuel on their trip on February the 16th.

They left another 14 tourists alone at the bus, 40 kilometres south of William Creek. One of the passengers said they briefly stopped during the night when they started to see things.

“One of our biggest concerns was that we could not see where we were going and that we might end up in the centre of one of the big paddocks out there causing greater concern,” he said.

When they arrived in William Creek they had used the last of their water.

There was no communications equipment on board the bus to raise the alarm.

The incident has stunned locals.

Adam Plate from Oodnadatta said all tourist buses and for that matter motor vehicles should have radio communications such as UHF when travelling in the outback.

“The vehicles should also be equipped with a Satphone in case of a rollover damaging the UHF.

“In the case of the Adventure Tours problem the route leaves William Creek and on their approach to Coober Pedy the driver should check in and out by UHF or Satphone with the Office, as this leg has killed 6 or 7 folk in the last 30 years.

“There is however a UHF repeater now close to Coober and the ch.8 town repeater.

A William Creek local said there should be a joint government committee set up between the South Australian and Northern Territory to establish minimum standards for tourism operators using the outback as destinations.

“At the moment there’s no minimum requirements for fare paying passengers using tour operators in remote areas,” he said.

“It can take up to 6 hours for the RFDS to get to William Creek, but normally it takes more than 2 hours.

“This could be critical if there was a major incident near here.

“There’s only 5 locals in William Creek and none of us have professional training but we do it as our public duty and on average there is a roll over every two to three weeks out here.”

The General Manager for Adventure Tours South Australia, Vicki Beard said the company has begun an internal investigation into the incident.

SAPOL beefs up Roxby presence

Oxiana starts hitting paydirt

Oxiana as the operators of the Prominent Hill copper and gold mine north of Roxby Downs have reported a net profit after tax of $305.8 million for the year ending December 31st.

Oxiana’s earnings before interest, tax and depreciation were $595.1 million for the year.

The company’s Managing Director and CEO, Owen Hegarty, said 2007 for Oxiana saw a strong operating and financial performance.

“We are well positioned to continue to invest in organic and acquisitions growth.”

Continued strong production levels were offset by a stronger Australian dollar, a weaker zinc price, and a higher effective tax rate payable by the company as it commenced paying tax in Laos at the full corporate rate.

Oxiana’s balance sheet strengthened, reflecting net assets of $1.5 billion at year-end.

The Company maintained a low gearing ratio and has no commodity hedging.

In 2007 Oxiana invested almost $700 million in new property plant and equipment, with the largest single item being construction of Prominent Hill.

Funding for this substantial investment was provided from existing cash balances and operating cashflow.

After meeting all funding requirements during the year, Oxiana retained a positive cash balance of $246 million at year-end.

Looking to 2008, the Company’s cash balances, the expected continuation of good operating cash flows and existing undrawn debt facilities mean that Oxiana is well placed to continue to fund its suite of development projects, which include completion of Prominent Hill.

The company will pay a final dividend of 4 cents per share (unfranked) which brings total dividends for the year to 8 cents per share, in line with 2006.

Roxby residents suffered through two unscheduled power outages last week.

The first, on Saturday afternoon, saw homes without power for about an hour.

The second hit on Sunday morning, rendering residents powerless for about four hours.

“The first power outage was the result of the failure of a supply cable in the Roxby Downs substation,” Electrical Services Manager for the Roxby Downs Council David Hallett said.

“This resulted in a need for urgent repairs.

“BHP Billiton determined the cable needed to be repaired as soon as possible.

“Notifications were put out on RoxFM and the power to Roxby Downs was shut down on Sunday morning for several hours.

“The outage was extended as BHP Billiton overhauled not only the supply cable in question but also other related cables.

“Council believes BHP Billiton undertook this work in a positive and professional manner,” he said.

Mr Hallett said the repair work is now complete and council expects no further outages related to this problem.

Roxby Downs Police station has been beefed up with the appointment of a resident detective who has 24 years experience in SAPOL’s CIB division.

Sergeant Rod Ford has a long service history with the police force having performed uniform duties at Port Adelaide and Adelaide before becoming a member of Crime Service – CIB for the past 24 years.

His service has included various units throughout SAPOL including Drugs, Organised Crime and recently for 3 years at the Australian Crime Commission.

Prior to his posting to Roxby Downs Sergeant Ford was stationed at the Organised Crime Investigation Branch.

He enjoys watching and participating in sports and plans to become involved in the community and its issues.

There has been a number of other changes within the Roxby Downs police station.

Other new members on the force in town include Senior Constable First Class Joseph O’Connell who has been with SAPOL for 24 years.

His service has included general duties, Transit Police, Traffic (including 10 years as a solo motorcycle officer), logistics officer for the International Police Tattoo and time with the Anti Corruption Branch.

Senior Constable O’Connell was also a Driver Training Instructor (for Police)

and spent a 6 month deployment to East Timor with the United Nations Civilian Police. He enjoys watching English Soccer, travelling and motor bike riding.

He is joined by Senior Constable Fiona Kerrish who has been with SAPOL for 15 years.

Her service has included various duties at Port Adelaide, Marla, Sturt, Victor Harbour and Port Augusta stations.

Senior Constable Kerrish is hoping to get a run with the Olympic Dam Netball Team.

Another new face to the Roxby Downs team is Constable Dylan Neighbour who has been with SAPOL for 2½ years.

His service has included duties at Port Augusta, Marla and the APY Lands.

Constable Neighbour has recently joined the Roxby Downs Football Club and is raring to go for the coming season.

He’ll also be one of the Blue Light Committee contact officers.

They’ve all joined Constable Rebecca Schutz who is the longest serving Roxby Downs member.

She’ll continue her role as an active member of the Community and SAPOL.

Prominent Hill Resources and Reserves are expected to continue to increase during 2008 based on the strategic drilling and assessment of recently discovered mineralisation and current resources.

Recent encouraging exploration results intersected include 1.5% copper and 0.6 grams per tonnes of gold as well as 50 metres at 1.8% copper and 0.6 grams per tonnes of gold.

Resource development drilling will upgrade the confidence of current resources beneath the open pit and define deeper resources to approximately 1,200m below surface.

Studies assessing underground mining potential are continuing and will draw significantly from the drilling results as they become available throughout 2008.

The Roxby Police noted the following incidents from the 18th to the 24th of February.

An Andamooka man was reported for driving an unregistered, uninsured motor vehicle and failing to notify motor registration of his change of address.

Police attended a fire in Andamooka where a motor vehicle was alight, no one was injured.

Gotta dance Something for everyone

Roxby’s very own dance studio, Outback Dance and Drama cater to all Outback Dance and Drama, is back for 2008, offering classes for all ages. age groups, from newborn to adult.

“We are taking enrolments now,” Coordinator Kirstie Goldfinch said.

“Sarah has already started working with the younger classes and our new teacher Hayley will be taking classes for 3 ½ year olds to adults from this week.

“It is very important to us to provide a non-competitive environment where students can learn the joys of music, dance and other dramatic arts,” she said.

A range of dance classes are on offer including funk, hip-hop and modern, as well as music and movement for younger students.

Outback Dance and Drama is hoping to offer circus skills, callisthenics, junior sports and drama classes in the future.

Since its introduction to the area the Building Healthy Communities project has attempted to provide something that will benefit the health of every community member in the Roxby Downs, Woomera, Andamooka and Pimba region.

It has funded the purchase of sporting equipment for local clubs, bicycles for the Leisure Centre, a wheelchair to be used at the town pool and installed notice boards in all four towns for health related literature.

It has supported smokers who wish to kick the habit by offering vouchers for nicotine replacement therapy and brought guest speak-

“The Olympic Dam Community Development program has recently also approved funding for two youth programs identified by the community – Operation Flinders – leadership development for youth at risk and the Red Cross Save a Mate program teaching young people to protect their mates in drug and alcohol emergencies.”

Other areas of concern included lack of competition, cost and variety in retail areas and provision of medical services.

Residents also identified infrastructure, amenity, utilities and sport and recreation as requiring more funding.

“We will be talking to both State and Local Government about the feedback from the survey, particularly relating to the services they provide to the existing town and with a possible expansion.

“We will also share the feedback with specific service providers operating in the towns,” Mr Winter-Dewhirst said.

The telephone survey was conducted in September of 400 randomly selected respondents in Roxby Downs, 50 from Andamooka and 30 from Woomera.

Battling the bulge at RDAS

he Roxby Downs Area School canteen implemented a new menu at the beginning of the school year, following guidelines from the Department of Children’s Services which ban the sale of ‘junk food’ in school canteens.

Sounds good in theory, but how do the students feel about their new healthy choices?

“Orders are down,” Canteen Manager Jane Johnston said.

“We are taking about 14 less a day, but apart from that we are doing okay.

“The new menu is basically the same as the old one, but we have taken the fatty things out.

“The little kids don’t seem to mind, except for missing the lollies that we don’t stock any more.

“The older kids have been more vocal about it, they want their iced coffees and chocolates back,” she said.

The canteen staff has done its best to make the new choices appetising and exciting, offering items like ‘booger balls’ (frozen grapes), fruit salad cups, ‘good eating’ low fat pies and sausage rolls and flavoured waters and milk drinks, but in spite of their efforts many of the students are choosing to take their business elsewhere.

“One of the problems we are having is that the Year 11 and 12 students are using their lunch passes to go to the Rec Centre or down the street and buy their junk food,” Mrs Johnston said.

“They come back with hot chips, iced coffees and Coke, and the younger ones see that and want those things too.

“It is a shame as any money we make in the canteen goes back to the school,” she said.

The new guidelines were implemented to counter South Australia’s growing obesity problem.

Health Minister John Hill said the figures on childhood obesity are disturbing, with one in five four-year-olds in the state overweight or obese.

“Obesity levels in SA have jumped by more than eight per cent since 1993, with 234,200 people in this state regarded as obese,” Mr Hill said.

“These figures are really disturbing, and the state government is acting at a grassroots level encouraging change in South Australians,” he said.

Australia’s largest off-grid solar power station is set to be built at remote Coober Pedy in South Australia’s far north.

Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett and South Australian P re m i e r M i k e R a n n j o i ntl y announced the $7.1 million project.

“This is a groundbreaking solar project – a spectacular example of the Rudd Labor Government’s commitment to a clean energy future,” Mr Garrett said.

The first Community perceptions survey undertaken by BHP Billiton on Roxby Downs, Woomera and Andamooka has provided some extremely useful data on the population.

How it thinks, what it reads, what it needs and who it responds to.

With the planned expansion of the Olympic Dam mine set to impact significantly on those communities it was a very timely exercise indeed.

One of the most strident issues in the feedback to the company concerned the provision of youth activities, services and facilities.

It was the top priority.

However the company has

no responsibility in this regard, although it does provide as much community support as it can through its Community Relations division.

So who takes responsibility for it.

It has to fall back squarely at the Roxby Downs Council and the state government’s feet.

There’s been some attempts to get it right for the youth in town but they have failed. It is hoped the new initiative of establishing a Youth Advisory Council (YAC) may help to professionally get the youth issues before the decision makers.

What better way to know what

the youth want as far as facilities and services are concerned than by having the youth themselves decide that, rather than an adult attempting to interpret what their needs are.

It’s been like that for years, and no wonder projects have fallen over in the past.

The youth interpret that as “We know what’s best for you.” But the adults have failed them in that basic test of trust. Ownership.

The kids need to have ownership of their future. The direction they want to take. The way they go about it and especially the things that they see as important.

If they have the avenue to the decision makers themselves, and not through a third “adult” party then they’ll see they can have an impact.

Infrastructure, amenity, utilities

and sport and recreation.

Others like the lack of competition amongst retailers, the cost and variety in retail areas and the provision of medical services.

It’s those things that get talked about over coffee or the back fence, but there just doesn’t seem to be any resolve to these issues. They go on year in year out.

So as adults, we now need to put pressure on the council and state government to provide answers to those long ailing questions, especially with the town expected to triple in size.

Lets get involved in the negotiations over the new indenture agreement currently being bashed out in the board rooms.

One great way to do this is through the town’s Community Board.

It’s there to represent us, and what better way to do that than use the company’s survey data to lobby for improvements in these areas.

The information and groundwork is already done. We can’t let the information from a community point of view just sit on the shelf.

Lets use it to get change. It’s an independent survey, so it carries weight and performed by one of the countries most noted research teams from the Queensland University.

Other information that really didn’t come as a shock was the fact that 93% of respondents put down employment as the major reason for living in Roxby Downs. This was followed by access to housing and a ‘good social life’.

Other reasons given were that it was a good place to raise children.

But on the other side of the coin those who would definately move away from Roxby in the next five years would do so for lifestyle and childrens education.

Lets hope the decision makers are ready to listen to the voice of the community. Lets hope they’ll embrace that change.

On November 5 Roxby Downs will be celebrating the anniversary of the official opening of the town and the mine.

It was on November 5 1988 that saw special VIP quests gather at Olympic Dam for the official speeches. Later the guests joined townsfolk in Roxby for a party.

There has been a history exhibition bubbling on under the surface here at Roxby for some time.

I remember hearing of a young film maker who was a Roxby resident who reputably had a great amount of archival video and film material from those early years.

He has subsequently left town. He really wanted to make the definitive Roxby doco.

Then there was the scrap-booking group who did some work collecting material to use in a Roxby scrapbook.

This material has been handed on to members of the Arts and Culture Forum. So now the call is out.

Anyone with any historical material in AV form or photographs are encouraged to make this available to John Warneke.

John put up his hand at a meeting of people interested in helping co-ordinate the birthday year’s activities.

He is a member of Outback Hotshots the local photography group that meets regularly at Dunes Café.

This is the same group that ran some very interesting workshops during Red Earth 07. One of those workshops had a group of people braving sunrise out in the Arid Recovery enclosure. Now that’s dedication.

If we can pull the threads of this project together, this is the year to do it. The birthday year. We could display the results in the Precinct Gallery during November.

The last meeting of the Arts and Culture Forum was a strategic planning meeting.

It echoed a meeting we had back in November 2006. That was the year the Forum decided to prioritise training and development, forward planning and events management.

Since then we have had numerous arts workshops and run a two week long arts festival in August last year. So it was a good time to sit down and contemplate the big picture.

Arts and Culture Forum meetings are entertaining. The conversation is quick fire and it is in no way boring.

I always come away from the meetings energised and full of confidence in this town’s ability to invent itself new everyday.

During this particular meeting our Chairperson suggested we take an asset based approach to our planning for the new year and beyond.

We did an audit of what we have here in Roxby and region already. What are our strengths and how can we build on them?

One of our greatest assets in the arts in Roxby is the community radio station.

When I arrived here in April 2006 Wendy Osborne was the co-ordinator of the Outback Fringe.

I worked closely with Wendy on that event and she went on to become the director of Rox FM as Crusty and Twisty moved on. Now Wendy and Geoff are moving on and the wheels turn.

The works chosen for the exhibition must be unique, different and inspirational to others who view it.

The principal will now keep Laura’s art work hanging in his office throughout this year as part of the art prize.

“The painting that won the Principal’s award was modeled on another former Roxby Downs student and close friend of mine,

Caitlin Baker,” Laura said.

“I had her pose for me lying on a couch.

“I did four different canvasses of her head, arms, torso and legs, all using the paint medium.

“That was the concept,” she said.

So what’s in store for this bubbly, effer vescent young budding artist?

“Well I hope to take a break for art and do something completely different for awhile,” Laura said.

“So in May I hope to go to the United States and do a bit of work there as an Au Pair, you know its one of those Gap Year things.

“When I come back home I’d like to take a visual arts course majoring in teaching at university.

“But also I’m drawn to an apprenticeship in hair and beauty design,” she said.

Whatever her endeavours, we wish her well on her journey of life.

The threat of up to 300,000 Australians set to lose their homes through interest rate rises (Source:JP Morgan and Fujitsu Consulting) has been described as a national tragedy which could take some people a lifetime to get over.

Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects said the Federal Government which has implemented an enquiry and monitoring system into grocery prices should do the same for land pricing in Australia.

Mr. Robert Caulfield, Managing Director of Archicentre said whilst the grocery initiative is a good move, a similar national approach to land pricing and the cost of development including all government and local government taxes and charges should be put on the agenda urgently.

“Housing cost is not the real issue as building is highly competitive - the real issue is land affordability.

“Under the program home buyers would be able to monitor the price of certain land costs such as taxes and charges online in each State, similar to the Federal Government’s program into the grocery industry.”

Mr Caulfield said that the collation of such information by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) would be invaluable in assisting developing a national approach to housing affordability for Australia’s working families.

“At this stage, the Government has instructed the ACCC to develop a ‘basket of grocery goods’ that will

be used to monitor price changes over time and across the country.

“We understand the ACCC will be developing a dedicated website which will be linked to the ACCC website, that will publish those prices on a regular basis.

“The same approach should be used for land costs and also take into account the cost of delays in the planning processes of state and local governments which can add thousands of dollars to the cost of housing projects,” he said. “ Th e c u r r e n t p o s i t i v e c o o p eration between the State and Federal Governments could be used as the basis for both a short term and long term attack on the housing affordability issue.”

Mr. Caulfield said, “the fact that we have 300,000 families likely to lose their homes this year because of interest rate rises and 750,000 families coming under extreme mortgage pressure the policies that are driving land prices up such as property taxes, long delays in planning approvals and a myriad of red tape need to be reviewed rapidly.

“Housing affordability in Australia needs a war effort where every area of government at a Federal, State and Local level is targeting a less expensive delivery of shelter - the basic need in our community.”

Mr. Caulfield said, the high cost of housing in Australia has a domino effect on health and welfare costs in Australia as the community will face a wave of community dysfunction if the housing affordability crisis continued.

Roxby Downs may seem a little quieter this week, following the departure of long time residents and radio presenters Wendy and Geoff Osborne.

The Monitor went to visit Wendy, former station manager of RoxFM, on one of her last mornings in town.

“I’m going to miss Roxby,” Wendy said.

“I’ve been involved in the North West of South Australia for 40 odd years and my children grew up in this area.

“I’ll miss RoxFM, it’s been a huge part of our lives since it first went on air,” she said.

Reminiscing about the early days at the station, Wendy said she had never intended to go on air, let alone manage the station.

“I’ve done a complete turnaround, I started behind the desk and now I’m finishing behind the desk.

“Geoff will continue in radio, it is in his blood, he’s thinking about starting up a radio station in Zeehan where he will be working,” she said.

Speaking of Zeehan Wendy cackled and logged onto a website to check the temperature in the rugged west coast Tasmanian town.

“Freezing,” she crowed.

“Six point two degrees, Geoff ’s

going to hate it! He hates the cold!”

Wendy is not planning to join Geoff in Zeehan, setting her sights on Hobart or Launceston instead.

“I’m going to become a full time lady of leisure and grandmother,” she said.

“I’ll be looking for a house big enough for the extended family to visit.

“If you are in the mining industry you move around a lot, but you often meet up with a lot of the same people, it’s like a floating community.

“It’ll be sad in some ways to go, but it was an opportunity we just couldn’t pass up,” she said.

There’s some youth on the 2008 Community Board in Roxby Downs.

24 year old Maya Chaustowski has put her hand up to bring a different, fresh and young perspective to the Board on issues that are close to her heart.

“I saw the advertisement for board members in The Monitor and decided to give it a go,” she said.

‘There’s just so many people with opinions in town but don’t do anything about it, I want to change that.

“I’ve opinions and I’m going to make sure I voice them especially about the provision of facilities for the town’s youth.

“For a start there needs to be a better venue set up for the teenagers because there’s really not much for them to do,” she said.

“We must provide facilities and events for them because not all of the big population of teenagers in town are into sports, so the vast majority are missing out.”

The other controversial chestnut Maya intends to pursue is that of an elected council.

“Most people I speak with in town want to see an elected council.

“They prefer to elect their own representatives and not have them appointed by an individual.

“I mean there are other communities in this state the same size as Roxby Downs which have an elected council, I can’t see what the problem is,” she said.

“You know this is regarded as a family town and it’s easy to forget that nearly 30% of the population is made up of young people, many others are single professionals and they seemed to get left out of the decision making process.”

Maya who has been employed by BHP Billiton as a graduate geotechnical engineer for the past 12 months came from Adelaide where she studied a dual degree in civil engineering and geology at the University of South Australia.

BHC does it again Residents of Woomera, Roxby Downs and Pimba may have noticed new community noticeboards in their localities lately.

These smart new noticeboards have been donated by the Building Healthy Communities Program to make health information more accessible to everyday people.

“Four noticeboards were purchased for the area,” BHC Project Officer Sue Houlson said.

“They have been installed in Roxby Downs, Pimba and Woomera, with the fourth set to be put up in Andamooka very soon.

“The idea is that the notice boards will give people better access to

health information.

“They will hold the phone numbers of health services and help lines and promote local health programs and community events.

“We are hoping the notice boards will enable to community to access local and national services more easily,” she said.

Keeping Roxby clean Summer is at an end, which in Roxby Downs means Clean Up Australia Day is just around the corner.

“This is a great chance for families, friends and businesses to get involved in Clean Up Australia Day and the Environment Forum’s

Adopt a Road clean up,” Forum spokesperson Sophie Torrisi said.

“The clean up on March 9 will commence at the Lions Park and finish at 12pm with a barbeque for all volunteers.

“Even if you come for an hour it all helps to keep Roxby tidy.

“Last clean up we had 86 enthusiastic volunteers, so let’s all get behind it and bring the family to try and reach a new record of 100 volunteers this year,” she said.

In a little more than four weeks the Roxby Downs community pool will be closed for the winter.

“The Roxby Leisure town pool will close for the season on Monday, March 31 at 8pm,” Sport and Recreation Coordinator Bridget Fenoughty said.

“It will re-open in October.

“We encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the facility for the remaining few weeks while the weather is still hot.

“Roxby Leisure would like to thank the community for its patronage.

“We would also like to extend special thanks to the lifeguards for their efforts throughout the season,” she said.

The future of tourism in Port Augusta, the Flinders Ranges and the state’s Outback is the focus of special meetings throughout the region next month.

The aim of the meetings is to formulate an Integrated Regional Strategic Tourism Plan.

The Plan will cover such things as economic and market analyses, growth scenarios and targets, return on investment, brand strategy, development opportunities, planning policy analysis, infrastructure needs and environmental management.

OD Finish Minor Premiers Olympic Dam secured the Minor Premiership for season 07-08 with a 103 run victory over a very depleted Wanderers side at Roxby Downs Oval on Saturday morning.

The Swaggies had only five regular players available and were no match for a points hungry Devil’s outfit who were at near full strength for the clash.

Charl Botes, Andrew Wellington, Scott Prior and Alan Woolford all got amongst the runs for the winners as did Damien Smith and Matt Watkins for the losing side.

On the bowling front Adam “Boof ” Warren returned the figures of 4/6 from three overs of leg spin for Olympic Dam and Les Rochester led the way for Wanderers with three wickets.

Cameo performances came from two of the younger brigade with Nick Hombsch making eleven not out at number five for the Swaggies as well as taking a wicket and Warren also made eleven runs before his haul with the ball.

Worthy of a mention are the stints of opening bowlers for the respective sides in Smith (8 overs, 1/11) and Botes (8 overs, 1/8) while Paul Luke another youngster was not disgraced in his debut with the new ball for Wanderers.

Competition will commence at the end of March with an Opening Day Ambrose on the 30th.

The following months will see the club kick into high gear, with five competitions planned for April and six for May and June.

The Club Championships will be held in July, followed by the Open Championships in August.

September will swing in with the annual RFDS Golf Day and Auction.

October and November will round out the season, with the final competition

pencilled in for Saturday, November 8.

“Anyone wishing to join the golf club is welcome,” RDGC Secretary Julie Darling said.

“If you wish to play in the Opening Day Ambrose but don’t have a partner contact the club and we’ll set you up,” she said.

The annual RFDS golf day is going to be especially big this year and is always a fun day.

Most of the community gather not only for the golf but the afternoon and evenings entertainment and auction.

As always there’ll be plenty to tempt you with this year and it will cuilminate in a fireworks display.

Cape Jaffa Jetty has been running well all summer and this past week has been no different. Mixed Bags of Squid, Mullet and Tommies are keeping anglers on their toes.

The squid and mullet tend to be early morning while the tommies have been schooling in the middle of the jetty after dark.

Swanport Reserve again gets a mention for the run of callop.

The fish are not big but the odd keeper is available to those who using river prawns or better still live shrimp. Mullet are at Second Valleys ‘second’ cove.

Smaller schools of the mullet are also at Rapid Bay and Cape Jervis. Crab Rakers are still doing well at Ardrossan and Price.

There’s plenty of Kind George Whiting at Port Victoria and big ‘bluey’s’ at Whyalla.

Boaties Cray Charters recorded 35 individual Crays from one drop of 6 pots last week. Suffice to say this was an extra ordinary result and most were returned to the ocean. The customers weren’t that displeased as the 8 that were kept, weighed in that day at just over 25kgs. The Cray charters also scored big Whiting and can be found at www.fishaust.net.

Wallaroo boats scored KGW to 45cm at the magazine grounds during the past fortnight.

On the east coast of Eyre Peninsula there are tommies and bag limits of blue swimmers.

Weekend sports action The Night Owls lawn bowling competition is in full swing with a maximum number of teams competing this year.
