On the road to recovery WOOMERA…A team of Roxby Downs fitness-lovers hit the road to raise money and awareness for victims of the December Asian tsunami disaster today, Thursday, January 20.

Headed up by Rev. Tom Beever, the group left Roxby Downs on the stroke of midnight to walk to Woomera. They will stay overnight then return to Roxby Downs tomorrow.

“It is going to be a punishing and hard trek, maybe we won’t make the whole walk, but we’ll do what we can and I believe we can make it,” he told The Monitor last week.

“We’ll have a police escort most of the way and we invite community members to come out, walk with us for a while, or just show your support.”

The walk will be coordinated alongside another local appeal aimed at local business, coordinated by WMC Resources and Olympic Dam Transport.

ROXBY DOWNS…Roxby Downs residents know how to give for a good cause – as local West Coast Bushfire Appeal coordinator Denise Trewartha discovered just hours after announcing her plan to collect for the appeal.

After hearing of the bushfires that swept across the Eyre Peninsula earlier this month, Mrs Trewartha, a West Coast farm girl herself, was keen to lend a helping hand.

She decided to start right here, at home, by calling for contributions from the local community.

But within a day she had been inundated with donations. Two days later her car was full, her loungeroom, three trailers, and a large part of a shed donated by local business SBS. “The response has been absolutely fantastic – I just can’t believe it,” Mrs Trewartha said.

Mrs Trewartha said the local appeal would continue but the goods may not be transported for a short while to allow West Coast aid agencies to sort through the mountain of donations.

Donations have varied and Mrs Trewartha said she has been “absolutely floored at people’s generosity”.

“There have been children who’ve gone through their toys and donated them. We’ve received a slippery dip and dolls house, bedding, mattresses, gameboys, DVD players, even two ‘Tickle-Me Elmos’ which will make some little child very happy.

“But we still need tinned food and pet

food, kitchen utensils, pots and pans, crockery – the basics.

“The most important items are clean, new underwear, pyjamas and non-perishable food items.

“There’s not a person in Roxby Downs that doesn’t have family or friends on the West Coast – everyone’s been touched by this tragedy. “ I just wanted those people on the West Coast to know that Roxby Downs, as a community, is thinking of them.

That statement was true for long-time Roxby Downs resident Nicole Richter, one of a series of local residents who immediately began cleaning out her cupboards when she heard of the appeal.

“I just kept thinking that, if it had happened to us, up here, our family and friends down there would have supported us,” she told The Monitor.

Mrs Trewartha thanked Brenton Smith and Geoff Bone of SBS who have donated a truck, storage space and their time to support the appeal.

Kindness of friends has made all the difference PORT LINCOLN…After almost 15 years in Roxby Downs, Michele Akers and Steve ‘Bullet’ Dearman moved to their ‘dream property’ just out of Port Lincoln with daughter Tori, 7, at the end of 2004.

Today, following the bushfires that swept across the Eyre Peninsula this month, that dream is a blank spot in a brown landscape.

“I’ve got my family, that’s all that matters to me,” Ms Akers told The Monitor last week.

“Everything else is just stuff - you can replace it all.”

Ms Akers was at work in Port Lincoln, where she is employed by HiFert, when the fires began to close in on their property just a few kilometres from the town of Charlton, on Tuesday, January 11, 2005.

At lunchtime she went home and saw the smoke billowing towards the property.

While Mr Dearman stayed to fight the fire, Ms Akers took their daughter back to work with her.

“I didn’t think to take anything with me then because the yard was pretty clear around the house.

“We hadn’t even unpacked all the boxes from the move. Now you see things in K-Mart you used to have and you just want to stop and close your eyes.

“People are just bending over backwards. “If someone sees you sobbing in the street they’ll just come right up to you.

“There’s people accepting donations everywhere, cars lined up onthe streets and people unloading stuff from their cars to donate.

“It made me cry because I saw how kind people are - mattresses, clothing, cupboards – things people have been hoarding for years and they’ve given it away.

“But still, it’s devastating to look around at the landscape which was so beautiful and so green, and now it’s just brown.”

Ms Akers and Mr Dearman met in Roxby Downs and their daughter was raised locally until they moved to the Eyre Peninsula late last year.

“We want people to know we’re all ok and we know that people are trying to help in any way they can, but all they can do is keep us strong.

“HiFert has helped us out with accommodation and we were insured,” she said.

In fact, when the loss assessor travelled to meet the family at their property, he found them enjoying a picnic table at a plastic outdoor setting just a few metres from the bare, blackened patch where their home had been. The family’s house had been destroyed, as well as their campervan, but ironically the plastic table and chairs had survived.

“I really want to say thankyou for the friendship and humour of Mel Vanzati in Roxby Downs, and the familiar face of Kathy Southon in Port Lincoln.,” Ms Akers said.

“But if our friends in Roxby still have photos or video of us and Tori, it would be nice to have copies of them. Those are the things the insurance won’t replace.”

NEWS WMC housing developments ROXBY DOWNS… WMC Resources (Olympic Dam) is seeking government permission to develop more than 20 blocks of land locally, in an effort to reduce the demand for housing in Roxby Downs.

The selected land represents a series of ‘infill’ blocks scattered through Roxby Downs, WMC spokesman Richard Yeeles old The Monitor.

“We know there is a waiting list for housing in Roxby Downs but we have taken some action to reduce the pressure.

“For example, we already have 19 houses in Woomera which have been made available to local WMC employees.”

This measure is complemented by a bus service for shift workers commuting from the Port Augusta region.

Mr Yeeles said the bus service was instituted by WMC as a safety measure for shift workers commuting, but did offer some employees the option to live outside of Roxby Downs.

Local rental properties are at an all-time low in Roxby Downs, with just a single property listed for rent so far this year and home rents in 2004 as high as $380. Housing values also soared in 2004, with house prices reaching more than $300,000 in a handful of cases.

Community to join the walk ROXBY DOWNS…Organisers of the Walk for More – to Build and Restore are calling on local community members to be part of their own local walk in Roxby Downs this Saturday, January 22, 2005.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the Richardson Place rotunda at 10am and join in a walk around the township from 10am to noon.

“Bring kids on bikes, strollers, clubs can form a relay, come for part of the walk or all of it – whatever you feel you can do,” event coordinator Rev. Tom Beever urged the community.

“We want to fly the flag high for Roxby Downs – we’re a close-knit township and this is an effort we want to make as a whole community.

Rev. Beever first envisioned the walk during a sermon where he illustrated the distance Mary and Joseph had walked from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

“I described it as walking from Pimba to Port Augusta, or from Roxby Downs to Woomera and back – it raised a lot of eyebrows.

“After that talk, I began to think – ‘if Mary and Joseph could walk that distance, why can’t I walk it to raise money for the tsunami appeal.

“But when I began to talk about it with people other volunteers became inspired.”

Rev. Beever has collected a team of fit, prepared walkers to join him on today’s trek.

The Walk for More – to Build and Restore is aimed at providing essential funds to help victims of the tsunami rebuild their communities and families.

“We’re going to shake the tin and raise lots of money, followed by a free community sausage sizzle and drinks at the swimming pool.”

Already the appeal has attracted incredible support from all areas of the community.

The walk will be the subject of a short film by local film-maker Jason Stringer who will volunteer his time to document the event and its beginnings.

Roxby Downs Council, Roxby Central Shopping Traders and local media including The Monitor - Your Community Newspaper, 105.5 RoxFM and The Roxby Sun have also committed practical support to the effort.

OD businesses dig deep OLYMPIC DAM… While one group of Roxby Downs residents has laced up their sneakers for the Walk for More to Build and Restore, another group of locals is reaching into their wallets to help the Asian tsunami disaster appeal.

RoxFM birthday celebrations ROXBY DOWNS…Community radio station 105.5 RoxFM celebrated its second birthday on January 11, 2005.

Celebrations were twofold with volunteers happy just to be back on air after a combination of storm conditions and hungry cockatoos knocked out radio transmissions the weekend previous.

Transmissions were interrupted over the weekend as a result of cockatoos gnawing at RoxFM’s coaxial cables, which then failed when storm rains hit the station.

“We want to send out a big thankyou to the volunteers who helped over the weekend to get us back on the air,” station manager Tina Foster told The Monitor.

“There were a lot of volunteers who spent their weekend on the roof.

“But that is just an example of the kind of support we’ve enjoyed at

RoxFM over the past year.

“Enthusiasm is still very high at the station, especially after gaining our permanent licence in 2004.

“We’ve gained some new DJs over the holidays, some very eager DJs who have only just moved to town and have come straight in to join up. Support and recognition is obviously still growing for RoxFM. “After all, 2004 was a big year for us, getting our permanent licence and hosting the inaugural Radio Ga Ga awards. We also farewelled our founding station manager Deb Paliska.”

Uranium railway trial approved OLYMPIC DAM…A trial to ship Olympic Dam uranium by rail to Darwin will start this month.

The three-month trial has been approved by State, Federal and NT Governments and may lay the foundations for a permanent rail service from Olympic Dam to the NT if all goes well.

The SA Government has also thrown its support behind the trial. “Uranium oxide concentrate has low radioactivity, is water insoluble, non-reactive and a non-flammable substance,” Mineral Resources Minister Paul Holloway told The Monitor.

“The freight rail component is generally considered a safe mode of transport for dangerous goods and

research has shown that rail transport is about five times safer than road transport.

“The new transport plans have been developed in consultation with SA Police, emergency services agencies, the Environment Protection Agency and the Department of Transport and Urban Planning.”

When the trial starts this month, uranium will be transported from Olympic Dam to the Port of Adelaide by road, as it has been since 1988, and then freighted by rail to the Port of Darwin.

“We’ll assess the outcome of the trial and decide whether we want to develop a more permanent rail solution then,” WMC spokesman Richard Yeeles told The Monitor.

WMC seeks Tired of cleaning answers to OD up Roxby’s rubbish bird deaths OLYMPIC DAM…WMC Resources is currently investigating a dramatic rise in bird deaths at the Olympic Dam tailings dam in 2004.

The Olympic Dam environmental team is seeking answers to why almost 100 dead birds were collected at the tailings retention system (TRS) over a fourday period in December 2004.

The TRS stores residues which remain after local ore is processed.

It incorporates four cells for solid residues and a network of evaporation ponds covering a total area of more than 400 hectares.

It is the acidic solution in these evaporation ponds which cause bird deaths.

A series of gas guns and strobe lights were introduced at the pond in 1996 which, until 2003, reduced bird deaths to between nine and 35 per year.

In the year before the system was introduced, bird deaths at the ponds totalled 111.

However, in 2004, mortality rates jumped significantly.

This new figure corresponds with a rise in average rainfall and regional flooding.

The environmental team is currently investigating whether the observed deaths come as a result of high populations of migratory and local birds, or other seasonal and climatic factors.

Other factors which may have contributed to bird deaths include; changes to monitoring procedures, possible changes in acidity levels or the chemical makeup of the tailings liquor, climatic conditions and possible equipment malfunction.

WMC representatives met with Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Primary Industries and Resources SA (PIRSA) and Department of Environment and Heritage officials last week to discuss the problem.

SA Minister for Environment and Conservation John Hill has requested current deterrent measures be stepped up to prevent more bird deaths during the investigation.

ANDAMOOKA… Andamooka volunteers are tired of cleaning up Roxby Downs residents’ rubbish, according to the Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association committee.

The complaint comes after a long-running practice of Roxby Downs residents dumping their refuse at the free-to-users Andamooka landfill.

“APOMA is responsible for managing the dump, which costs a considerable amount of money each year – money that the Andamooka community must pay,” APOMA secretary Jean Lawrie told The Monitor.

The issue was highlighted before Christmas 2004 when, following a major clean-up which included a new pit being dug and signs installed, several Roxby Downs residents were observed “dumping their unwanted items in complete disregard for the signs”.

“APOMA now has to pay someone to go out and clean up the area again,” Mrs Lawrie said.

Tyres, especially, have become an increased problem in recent months. things in the wrong place here, some people are travelling with unsecured loads on their way to Andamooka, or just dumping their rubbish on the roadside halfway here.

“Tyres are one of the big issues because it’s illegal to dump them inappropriately and if we catch someone dumping their tyres here they will be prosecuted.”

APOMA has called on Roxby Downs residents to use their own council landfill, instead of using

the Andamooka dump.

“The Roxby Downs dump is open three times a week and the Roxby Downs Council has much better resources than APOMA.” Roxby Downs Council administrator Bill Boehm has thrown his support behind the call, reminding local residents that there are a number of hefty penalties for people dumping rubbish in unapproved areas.

PORT AUGUSTA…Tourists can now see some of the Flinders Ranges loveliest features just by hopping on a bus at Port Augusta. Gulf Getaways this month launched the Outback Link which ferries visitors and locals alike from Port Augusta to Quorn, Hawker, Rawnsley Park and Wilpena Pound twice a week. Flinders Ranges tourism operators have welcomed the service following the withdrawal of the Premier Stateliner service between Adelaide and Wilpena late last year.

ROXBY DOWNS…The Roxby Downs Tidy Towns Association has been declared defunct after its last local member, John Zwar, announced his move this month. The Roxby Downs Tidy Towns Team has worked closely with the community and Roxby Downs Council for more than 15 years and has seen the town feature consistently and highly in the annual KESAB Tidy Towns competition. SHARPS...Roxby Downs Community Health Services have cautioned local residents to report publicly-discarded sharps to local police, council or the hospital for safe disposal.

A sharp-edged issue ROXBY DOWNS...Roxby Downs Community Health Services were called to the Lions Park this week when a local resident discovered hypodermic needles scattered through the park toilets.

The needles had fallen out of a sharps disposal container which vandals are believed to have torn down.

ANDAMOOKA…The Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association is currently negotiating a contract with WMC Resources to supply desalinated water via pipeline to the outback community of Andamooka. WMC Resources is expected to provide an annual quota of water to the community of 600 people. Currently, water is carted by truck to individual residents for purchase. APOMA organisers, however, have voiced their concerns over water demand by residents as a result of an increased number of swimming pools installed throughout the community in the past few years. APOMA is currently reviewing a proposal which will see an individual quota placed on households. As a result, swimming pool owners may pay an excess.

ANDAMOOKA…The seventh annual Skunks and Outback Tourers SA Toy Run was hosted on December 4, 2004, attracting around 15 motorcyclists both locally and interstate. The Toy Run leaves Roxby Downs every year and finishes in Andamooka where the participants enjoy a social evening with games and competitions. While numbers were down on other years, organisers thanked the community for its ongoing support through donations. Toy donations will be distributed throughout the Andamooka region and surrounding stations.

FLINDERS AND OUTBACK…The South Australian Tourism Commission has appointed a new regional marketing manager for the Flinders Ranges and Outback. Meg Barker comes to the appointment from her former position as SATC’s marketing manager for the Clare Valley region.

A day for all Australians

LONG-TIME LOCALS…Kate, John and Bev Zwar are packing up and heading to Adelaide after almost two decades living locally in Roxby Downs.

When John Zwar came to Roxby Downs 18 years ago he was one of four people to live in the township’s first house - which was also the post office and council office, with a shed to house the TAFE pottery classes.

A year later when wife Bev followed him to town from Port Augusta – their home of 13 years - she brought daughter Lara, son David and the then baby of the family Peter.

Now, almost two decades later the baby of the family is 15-year-old Kate, who will start high school in Adelaide next month when the term resumes.

David will continue to live locally with his partner, Lara has married and begun her own family in Adelaide, and Peter is now managing a sports store in Arndale.

After an initial two and a half years with council as supervisor of works and gardens, Mr Zwar went on to ply his horticultural skills for WMC Resources and the then Olympic Dam Project.

“Roxby Downs really has been home to us for 18 years and a great place to raise a family,” Mr Zwar told The Monitor last week. “It’s been a safe place for the kids to grow up and over the years it’s been pleasing to see the increasing number of facilities established for young people.”

For John, Bev and Kate, the greatest loss will be that of their longtime friends and workmates.

“We have made many friends over the years and we have said goodbye to many of them as they have left,” Mrs Zwar told The Monitor. “Now it is our time to say farewell. I couldn’t think of anywhere I would have rather been for the past 17 years and if circumstances were different we would be happy to be staying.”

As a family, the Zwars have been involved in almost every aspect of Roxby Downs life – from the AFS exchange student program and local sports, to teaching Sunday School and raising more than $45,000 in funds for the Royal Flying Doctors Service through the community mulching program.

Mr Zwar’s connection goes back to the earliest days of the township’s development when he consulted for both a horticultural company and the SA Government on the town’s design.

For Kate, who has never known any other home, she has enjoyed her schooling and every type of afterschool activity, from Gumnuts when she was five, to swimming, netball and basketball in recent years.

“Before we leave, I would like to thank all those people who volunteer their time to organise youth sport and activities,” Mrs Zwar said.

“The commitment, the enthusiasm and the time these dedicated people give really made a difference in our children’s lives.”

Mr Zwar, himself, has played a significant part in local community activities as founder and president of the Roxby Downs Tidy Towns Team, initiator and supporter of the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens and recipient of the Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award in 2000.

The family’s move comes after Mr Zwar’s recent retrenchment and coincides with Kate’s plans to start senior school in Adelaide, at Walford Ladies College.

“As a parting message, I’d just like to remind Roxby residents that we live in a really special part of Australia with a fantastic environment .

“I really encourage people to care for the environment and to treat it with respect .”

ROXBY DOWNS… Local ambulance volunteer Dawn Kroemer was this year nominated for a national Australian of the Year Award.

The nomination comes after almost 19 years of service with the SA Ambulance Service (formerly St John Ambulance Service), 15 of which were served locally in Roxby Downs.

The awards honour Australians who are “inspirational and outstanding,” according to Lisa Curry Kenny, chair of the National Australia Day Council.

Mrs Kroemer was one of 1900 Australians nominated for the award.

However, just 15 South Australians will receive national awards this year.

“It’s nice to be appreciated,” Mrs Kroemer told The Monitor. “The nomination was a real surprise though.

“But I’m just a cog in the works, basically, one of hundreds of volunteers around the state.”

ROXBY DOWNS… Children at Little Rascals Child Care Centre have been up to their elbows in fun these holidays during the centres’ vacation care program.

“We’ve had a school holiday program running which has attracted a strong following and some great comments,” centre director Karen Mentiplay told The Monitor.

“We’ve enjoyed excursions to the movies and the recreation centre, cooking, a science day, craft activities and tie dyeing, weaving, piñata making, even a shadow puppet play.

“We really try and do very different things to keep the kids interested and their imaginations stimulated.”

After staffing pressures in 2004, Mrs Mentiplay says the team at LRCCC is looking forward to a revitalised centre in the new year, with an infusion of newly-accredited team members.

“Parents have stuck with us through the hard times and now we can validate that support by continuing to improve on our quality of care.

“It’s a new year and a fresh start at Little Rascals this year.”

Programs in 2005 will include the twice-weekly Pre-Kindy sessions for three-year-olds on Mondays and Thursdays.

The centre will continue to provide out of school hours care for local school students with the aid of an air-conditioned mini-bus to drop children to and from the centre.

Youth support bushfire appeal ROXBY DOWNS...

Roxby Downs Youth Services volunteers joined local efforts to raise funds for victims of the West Coast bushfires this month.

Volunteers collected almost $600 in cooperation with the Roxby Downs Community Club on Saturday, January 15.

The money was then diverted to the Lion’s Appeal through NACOS Credit Union - who then matched the donation dollar for dollar.

“That’s a lot of money in just a night - we’re really glad we could help,” services coordinator Sue Penglase told The Monitor.

BUILDING BUSINESS…Business trainee Natasha Swan, 17, with employer Mark Beenham, of Beenham Elite Building and Services.

Building strong foundations ROXBY DOWNS…Business trainee Natasha Swan, 17, thought her options had suddenly come crashing down when she discovered there was no full-time employment for her at the end of her Certificate II Business traineeship.

But with the help of the Career Employment Group (CEG) Natasha has built on those strong foundations in, ironically, the local building industry.

Natasha has joined building and services business Beenham Elite, in Roxby Downs, where she will complete a Certificate III in Business.

“I’m almost three months into the traineeships and I’m getting to know the systems and all the new jargon,” Natasha told The Monitor.

“My original traineeship was at Roxby Downs Medical Practice, but here at Beenhams I’m dealing with plumbers and carpenters and electricians - I’ve had to learn a whole new language.”

Natasha – who completed her original traineeship in cooperation with her Year 12 studies – was keen to further her skills and knowledge in business when the Beenham Elite traineeship was announced.

“I wanted a full-time job and that just wasn’t there at the end of my original traineeship.”

“This is the first time we’ve taken on a trainee this way,” Mark Beenham of Beenham Elite told The Monitor. “It’s been a big learning curve for Natasha, and for us as well.

“But one of the benefits of training people like this is that you get someone early, and you look after them, and hopefully they decide to stay at the end of it. They’re not bringing in bad habits from other businesses into our business.

“Being in the building trades for so many years, we’ve seen how well apprenticeships work for youth.

Hiring locally is always our first priority – which made this a great solution.

“Next time a position comes up, we will definitely look at doing things this way again. In this case, we’ve got a job waiting for Natasha at the end of her 12 months.”

Natasha encouraged more local students to consider the benefits of school-based apprenticeships and trainee programs.

“Doing my original traineeship and Year 12 at the same time was fantastic for me,” Natasha said. “I wanted to be out there, and it was much easier for me to learn on the job.”

Natasha is one of more than 30 local apprentices and trainees currently placed by CEG. In fact, across the state apprenticeship and traineeship numbers are on the rise. In 2004, figures jumped 1100 on the previous year to 23,700 placements throughout SA. “The number of female apprenticeships and traineeships in SA is also on the rise, with 37 per cent of the state’s apprentices and trainees in June 2004 being women, compared with 35 per cent in June 2003.

Mem Fox adds a touch of reading magic to festival Renowned Australian children’s author Mem Fox will host a parent workshop in Woomera during the Outback Fringe Festival - ‘The Magic of Reading Aloud’.

Mrs Fox assures parents learning to read isn’t difficult, although many parents assume that it is.

In the mid-sixties, totally unsophisticated, she went

to drama school in London and spent three arduous but happy years changing her accent, speaking Shakespeare, singing Beatles’ songs, wearing mini-skirts and dyeing her hairÑa habit she has never grown out of.

She took a great risk in 1969 and married an Englishman. In 1970 they migrated to Adelaide, South Australia.

MAKING A MARK...Aerosol artist James Cochran will again join the Outback Fringe Festival program in 2005 to create a series of murals in Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera alongside community members.

Making a mark in the Outback Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera residents will make their marks on the outback this year as part of the 2005 Outback Fringe Festival.

The ‘Mark Making in the Outback’ project will invite local community members and youth to join artists James Cochrane and Dan Bradley in creating a permanent monument to celebrate local issues and the festival theme – Families, Mining and the Outback.

This year’s project follows on from the 2004 mural project in Richardson Place, Roxby Downs, which saw local youth involved in the design and execution of their own mural depicting image of their own community and lives.

Aerosol art carries with it both positive and negative connotations. Some see it as art, others see it as vandalism, and many consider it a form of mark making. Whatever the case it cannot be denied that, inherent to its formation, aerosol art has a heavy cultural basis.

Street culture is the primarily suggested basis of this and indeed, aerosol art has developed its own urban cultural identity.

Its history, however, is much more related to rural beginnings.

From Aboriginal cave paintings, to marking land, cattle and mining sites - the notion of mark making has existed in the outback for centuries.

It is with this mindset that Roxby Down’s own ‘Mark Making in the Outback’ project gathers its momentum.

The notion of making a mark, not as a form of ownership, but rather as a celebration of place and identity, a symbol of communities evolving, questioning and possibly addressing issues.

Community members will be able to shape this project and create an artifact, relevant to their surrounds.

There will be workshops on technique and, of course, content, given by principal artist, James Cochran, with assistance from artist Dan Bradley.

Creation of murals on specific, considered sites will then begin, once again relying heavily on community participation, with guidance from the principal artist, James Cochran and artist Dan Bradley.

During creation and upon completion the murals/cultural artifacts will be documented by photographer/ documenter Anneke Botes and officially opened by fringe committee members.

This project is integral to the festival’s theme being realised in the three key communities.

Each town will be left with a permanent cultural artefact, reflective of the community and the festival theme.

This will act as an instigator of thought and healthy criticism for the community and visitors to the region.

Community participation will promote community awareness and a celebration of place, encouraging community members to appreciate and stay within the region.

Sweet Baby James goes OFF in 2005 He’s played at Boogie in the Bush in 2004, he’s played onstage with with Jeff Healey, Sue Foley, Dick Heckstall-Smith and ‘The Big Town Playboys’ and been filmed for a Canadian blues documentary alongside BB King, Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown and Pinetop Perkins.

It’s fair to say that ‘Sweet Baby’ James has ‘the blues’…and he wants to you to hear all about it.

His new duo (with crack drummer Rob Eyers from the UK) harks back to the ‘juke-joint’ era of the blues, performing the sultry and dirgy guitar and drum sounds that one ABC radio listener described as ‘the sexiest music she’d ever heard’.

“Rob and I are huge fans of RL Burnside, Robert Nighthawk and early Muddy Waters,” James told The Monitor.

“We have such a great time playing this stuff while still ensuring it comes directly from the heart.

“It’s the blues, man; there’s no other way to do it!”

This music is a departure from that of James’ previous band, the more contemporary ‘Sweet Baby James Trio’, with which James toured and garnered a great deal of airplay for in North America, Europe and around Australia.

However, once he started jamming with Rob in mid 2002, the sound naturally started to lean towards a much more traditional but incredibly fresh sound.

In April 2003, they spent one short hour in the recording studio doing a series of “first takes”, trying to authentically create a recorded product in the same way that others had originally done in their genre, the result being “Vertigo Blues: The EP”.

The CD launch was sold out a week in advance and the EP went on to become a Radio Adelaide “Feature CD of the week”.

The CD also caught the attention of John Durr, head of Australia’s leading blues label, “Black Market Music”, which has led to the production of a full length album, due out on the label in early 2005.

So far this year, James & Rob have booked a rigorous touring schedule, taking in music festivals and high profile club gigs around the country.

They pick up new, ecstatic fans wherever they play…

POLICE & COURT REPORTS Assaults, thefts, fraud and drink driving - just a normal day in court Far North police report The Roxby Downs Court of Summary Jurisdiction was held at the Roxby Downs Council rooms on Wednesday, December 15, 2004. Court will next be held in Roxby Downs on February 2, 3 and 4, 2005.

A 42-year-old Andamooka woman who threw a beer bottle at her ex-lover’s partner and chased her through Camp 3 was convicted of trespass, threatening to cause harm and assault in court last month. The court heard that the victim was in her partner’s single person’s accommodation room at Roxby Downs when she received a phone call and heard the defendant say, “I know where you are, I’m coming to see you”.

A short time later the victim heard the defendant swearing and screaming abuse at her from outside the camp room. Police told the court “the victim believed that if the woman came into the room she would be killed”. The defendant then lifted up an armchair and sent it smashing through the window of the room. Court heard the woman then began to throw the tenant’s possessions at the victim, including CDs, bottles and a TV, until she ran from the room, yelling for help.

The defendant launched a bottle at the woman’s head and chased after her.

Court heard the defendant had previously been convicted of threatening the victim over the telephone. The woman argued the attack came after “a long, long-running domestic situation” with her former partner who, she said, had taunted her about his new relationship. The defendant told police she had drunk eight to 10 beers that day and when she received the phone call she had “seen red” and gone to “have it out” with her former partner’s current girlfriend. “I’m sure alcohol played some part in what appears to be a simmering state of affairs,” Magistrate Clive Kitchin said. “I regard the allegations in this matter as pretty serious.” The woman received a twomonth suspended imprisonment sentence and a good behaviour bond of 18 months. She was also ordered to pay $338.36 to Camp 3 for damage to the window and the armchair.

A 20-year-old Roxby Downs man narrowly escaped going to jail after pleading guilty to knocking a man down and kicking him in the face in response to a series of racial taunts. Court heard how the defendant and the victim had been engaged in an ongoing series of events at local licensed premises during the evening of Friday, September 3, 2004. Witnesses described “lots of chesting, pushing each other” and “tough talk”.

“There were faces being pulled across the bar and lots of pushing each other,” according to the police prosecutor. After

the victim threw a spirit glass at the defendant in the men’s toilets, the pair again began to push each other on the dance floor where, when the victim fell to the ground, the defendant “gave a kick to the face before stepping on him”. As a result, the victim received seven external stitches in his face, four internal and was later forced to take time off work as a result. The defendant told the Court how the antagonism had been an ongoing one between the two men, largely as a result of the man’s Maori heritage.

The victim also acknowledged the long-running aggression between the two men. The man was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and disorderly behaviour and ordered to pay almost $300 compensation to the victim. He received a suspended sentence of three months imprisonment and a good behaviour bond of 18 months. “There’s a message that I’m sending to you and to others,” Magistrate Clive Kitchin said.

“I take a very dim view of assaults. This is appalling behaviour. Racial insults are uncalled for behaviour, but not something that should result in the kind of retaliation that you were involved in.”

The defendant apologised to the court, for potentially bringing the reputation of his fellow Maori Roxby Downs residents into disrepute.

A 20-year-old Roxby Downs man who nearly drove his car into a police officer in June last year was convicted on a series of driving charges and fined $1000. He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months. Court heard a police officer at a random breath-testing station in Burgoyne St on the evening of Wednesday, June 16, 2004, heard a vehicle rev as it approached their position on the wrong side of the road without any lights.

When the vehicle continued to speed past the station, the police officer who had walked out into the road to wave the vehicle down was forced to jump out of the way, narrowly avoiding injury.

Less than an hour later the officer attended the driver’s home where he submitted to an alcotest and registered a blood alcohol level of 0.099g. The man, who had a prior record of drink driving told the court “I was a dickhead”.

“I didn’t stop because I knew I’d lose everything.” The man pleaded guilty and was convicted of failing to drive left of a dividing line, driving at a dangerous speed, failing to comply with a request to stop a vehicle, driving at night without his lights and driving an

unregistered motor vehicle. Clive Kitchin cautioned the accused “you can’t drive like that and expect to retain your licence”. “As a result of how you were driving you could have caused a police office some quite serious injury”.

A 21-year-old Andamooka man who pleaded guilty to trespassing and dishonestly taking property from the Andamooka Primary School in February last year narrowly escaped jail after receiving a 10month suspended sentence and a good behaviour bond of two years.

Court heard a community member discovered the man on the evening of February 9, carrying goods from an Andamooka Primary School building. When police searched his residence a few weeks later they discovered a large quantity of goods stolen from the school including scientific instruments, computer parts and educational resources. The police report revealed the man had told police, at the time, “he knew the property…had been stolen as he had stolen it”.

The man told the court that, at the time of the incident he had been unemployed and struggling with “a problem with drugs and alcohol”. “I’ve given it all away now though,” he said. Magistrate Clive Kitchin said that, despite the seriousness of the crime, he was comforted to see that the defendant had made some lifestyle changes. “He has obtained full-time employment and involved himself in community activities within Andamooka. He has realised what he did was wrong and taken some positive steps to do something about it. Notwithstanding, this is a serious matter and it attracts some serious penalties.”

When police searched the man’s home they seized a 25cm double-edged dagger. Police confiscated the dagger and the man was convicted of possessing a prohibited weapon without further penalty.

The same man, in a separate incident on July 9, 2004, was charged with driving an unregistered/ uninsured vehicle. He was convicted and disqualified from driving for 14 days and fined $200 with court costs.

A 35-year-old Andamooka man was jailed after the latest in a long history of fraudulent social security claims. He was convicted on three counts of making false statements in claims for social security payments.

Court heard the man illegally collected more than $1000 worth of NewStart payments over three sepa-

rate occasions in 2003 while he was working.

The man said that during that time he had received an injury at work and was not able to work but his local employers, instead of providing WorkCover, continued to pay him a wage.

Management changes within the company later highlighted the problem. Additionally, the prosecution quoted a series of similar fraudulent claims in 1996, 2000 and 2002, as well as forgery convictions in 1998, whose fines the man had not yet paid off. In response, Magistrate Clive Kitchin handed down a three-month sentence of imprisonment with a further two-year good behaviour bond. He also ordered the man to repay $1075.20 to CentreLink. “This is a warning to both yourself and the public that you can’t continue to offend, nor can you continue to incorrectly declare your income,” Mr Kitchin said.

An 18-year-old Roxby Downs man who told the court he was “manhandled” and sprayed with capsicum spray by police when he “acted aggressive’, was later found guilty of disorderly behaviour, damaging property and resisting arrest. The man - who told court he had been assaulted by another man and was defending himself when police attended the scene of the disturbance - protested that police “treated me like I was drunk and I wasn’t,” before capsicum spraying him. “My skin was burning to the touch.

I was disoriented from the capsicum spray. They [the police] told me to get in the ambulance or in the cell.” The man, who was then handcuffed outside the police station, proceeded to damage a fence he was handcuffed to with his own head. “You may very well have been the victim of an assault,” Magistrate Clive Kitchin told the man on summing up. “But it appears the resulting situation is one that you may have aggravated.” The man was fined $200 and ordered to pay $239.80 compensation to police, but no conviction was recorded. “I’ll think you’ll agree that was a fairly expensive night out,” Mr Kitchin said. The other Roxby Downs man involved in the original incident was convicted for disorderly behaviour and fined $100 with court costs.

A 33-year-old Roxby Downs man was disqualified from driving for 18 months and fined $1000 after registering a blood alcohol level of 0.229g.

Court heard that the man had consumed around 20 drinks at a “grand final function” and had driven to “get a packet of cigarettes from the service sta-

tion” when he was stopped at a random breath-testing station. “I was an idiot,” he said.

Magistrate Clive Kitchin chided the man that he would have been “very aware…of the courts’ dim view of drink driving” after receiving prior convictions for similar offences in 1998 and 1991. “It never ceases to amaze me the number of people in Roxby Downs who drink and drive when almost everybody who lives here needs their licence to travel to work,” Mr Kitchin said.

“But they are willing to throw it all away by drinking and driving. I can’t imagine what would have possessed you to get in a car with a reading like that.”

A 26-year-old Roxby Downs woman was convicted of unlawfully being on premises after police were forced to remove her from an Irrapatana St residence at 3am in the morning on December 4, 2004. Court heard that the woman had been asked to leave the premises at least three times but continued to abuse the owner of the premises and demand to see a third party at the residence. She told the court she “had no idea” why she behaved the way she did and was fined $108 with court costs.

A 20-year-old Roxby Downs woman who was recorded driving at 75km per hour in a 60km zone was fined $139 with court costs.

A 41-year-old Roxby Downs man was convicted and disqualified from driving for eight months after driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.120g. The man, who had a prior drink driving conviction in 1994, was fined $650 with court costs.

A 25-year-old Roxby Downs man who was caught stealing cigarettes and loose change out of a parked car in Roxby Downs was convicted and made subject to a 12month good behaviour bond. Court heard that, at the time of the offence, the man was discovered by the vehicle’s owner who apprehended him, ordered him to empty out his pockets, and then called the police, on November 6, 2004.

Police are seeking information regarding the theft of a galah from Breen Park in the early hours of Sunday morning, January 16, 2005.

Two males, a 16-yearold and a 17-year-old from Roxby Downs were reported on January 14, 2005 for minor possess and consume alcohol in a public place.

A report of theft was received on January 13, 2005 from a Roxby Downs resident. A push bike helmet was stolen from off a bike in a front yard.

A report of property damage was received from a Roxby Downs resident, damage to a vehicle from a shopping trolley being pushed into it on January 13, 2005.

Police received a report of non aggravated serious criminal trespass on January 12, 2005 from a Roxby Downs resident after their house was broken into.

Police reported a 20-year-old Roxby Downs man on January 12, 2005 for driving unlicensed, an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

A report of property damage was received from the Roxby Downs Area School on January 11, 2005, damage was to vents and aerials on the roof of the school.

A 23-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported on January 11, 2005 for exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol, a BAC of 0.119% was received.

Police received a report of theft and property damage from a Roxby Downs Resident on January 10, 2005. Stolen were solar garden lights and cement statues.

A report of illegal interference and theft was received from a Roxby Downs resident. A vehicle parked on Bopeechee Street was broken into where a car stereo and CDs were stolen on January 10, 2005.

A number of youths and adults in Roxby Downs have recently been reported for riding their push bikes without helmets. Police would like to remind all bike riders that they must wear a helmet when riding a push bike.

The introduction of Mobile Random Breath Testing came into effect on 26 September, 2003.

Police can stop a vehicle at anytime and require the driver to submit to a Breath Test during prescribed periods.

The prescribed periods are during school holidays, long weekends and four other periods proclaimed.

With the school holidays here the period will be from 5pm on Friday December 10, 2004 to Midnight on Sunday, January 30, 2005.

A 23-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported for driving without due care and PCA following a crash on Arcoona Street on December 31, 2004.

A complaint was received on December 29, 2004 in relation to the Roxby Downs Youth Centre having fly screens jemmied from its windows.

An 18-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported on December 28, 2004 for driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle and L plate offences.

A 22-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported for assault on December 27, 2004.

A 24-year-old Roxby Downs man was reported for driving without due care and for disorderly behaviour on December 26, 2004.

A 29-year-old Adelaide man was reported for urinating in a public place on January 16, 2005.

The Super Co-contribution is a helping hand from the Australian Government to assist eligible individuals to save for their retirement.

If you earn less than $58,000 a year, make personal super contributions and are otherwise eligible, the Government will give you a helping hand with the Super Co-contribution.

It means that if your total income for tax purposes is $28,000 or less a year, the Government will now put in one dollar and fifty cents for every dollar you put into your super, up to a maximum Super Co-contribution of $1,500 a year.

When your income is more than $28,000 but less than $58,000 in a year of income, your Super Co-contribution will be adjusted based on your income and how much you personally contribute.

For example, if you are eligible and your income is $42,000 and you make personal super contributions of

$1000 during the relevant year, you will be entitled to a Super Co-contribution of $800.

The eligibility criteria for the Super Cocontribution have now been widened to include more people.

You will be eligible for the Super Cocontribution in a year of income if: you make personal superannuation contributions to a complying superannuation fund or an RSA; your total income (assessable income plus reportable fringe benefits) is less than $58,000; 10% or more of your total income is from eligible employment; you do not hold an eligible temporary resident visa at any time during the year; you lodge an income tax return for the year of income; and you are less than 71 years old at the end of the year of income.

The way your Super Co-contribution is determined will depend on the year in which you made your personal super contributions.

Your super fund will be able to tell you how to best make personal contributions.

Most funds offer different options for making contributions including BPAY, direct debit or through your bank account.

In some cases, you may be able to deposit a certain amount into your super account directly from your pay – talk to your employer or paymaster.

For each year that you are eligible, make personal super contributions and lodge a tax return, the Government will make a Super Co-contribution to your super account.

Council supports ‘Walk for More’ tsunami appeal

Roxby Downs Council News is a paid community service “Walk for More to Build and Restore” 2005 Tsunami Disaster Appeal 2005...Roxby Downs community’s “Walk for More to Build and Restore” 2005 Tsunami Disaster Appeal will involve a community walk from Woomera on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st January and in Roxby on the morning of the Saturday 22nd January 2005 from 10am to 1pm. Details have been sent to residents by letter drop.

Why not come and show your support to this community group.

On Saturday 22nd meet at the Richardson Place Rotunda and 10am and join in a 10 km walk around Roxby Streets before finishing at the Swimming Pool for a minute of silence and a “celebration of giving” with a barbecue and music.

Works in Progress...No submissions concerning Draft Community Land Management Plans have been received. As required under the Local Government Act plans have been formally adopted.

There will be road closures in the southern section of the town to connect up services to new allotments. The length of time each closure will take depends on the type of, and how many services are to be put into place. Council does not expect the roads to be closed any longer than one day per road crossing. Council regrets any inconvenience. A letterbox drop will be made prior to inform residents effected by this work. There may be interruptions to water/electricity and Telstra services.

Four of the six new lights are operational at the two roundabouts in Hermit Street with the balance to be soon completed. Council thanks all road users for their patience during this time.

Upcoming Works...Sewer pump stations to be cleaned and some to be upgraded.

Council will be relocating a high voltage switch on Burgoyne Street to assist access for the property owner.

We are also replacing a street light feed cable in front of the Hospital on Burgoyne Street. Both above jobs require considerable excavations and we apologise for any inconvenience.

Business Signage...Local businesses have been invited to be part of new tourism signage in Roxby Downs. Council and the Roxby Downs Business Forum have thrown their support behind new tourism signage at the corner of Olympic Way and Burgoyne Street and on the public toilet block in Richardson Place. Designs echoing the current Wilmap distributed through the Roxby Downs Visitor Information Centre have been approved. Signage sales are now open. Electricity Cent-A-Meters...Council is purchasing 5 analyser meters for customer service purposes. These meters are available for hire from Council for a small fee. Meters will assist customers to monitor their power usage.

Dog Registrations...Dog Registration Renewal letters have been sent to all registered dog owners. Please register your dog/s by November 30 2004. Fines will apply for non registered dogs. This is an offence under the Dog and Cat Management Act, punishable by a fine of $80.00 per offence. If your dog has been desexed or micro chipped, proof of this service will be required. Fines will also apply if your dog is found to be wandering at large.

Rates...Second quarterly rate payments were due on 16 December 2004. Fines of 2% will be charged for late payments.

Electricity Water Sewerage Rates & Tariffs...New rates and tariffs for water, sewerage and electricity services came into effect from the 1 January 2005. These will be included in the next relevant monthly and quarterly billing run and for any final accounts.

Bushfire Prevention...The recent fires in the Eyre Penninsula present a timely reminder to residents of the inportance of taking adequate fire prevention actions of premises and being generally careful with potential fire sources such as cigetrette butts, motor bikes and other mechanical equipment in our hot arid climate. Residents are requested to keep areas surrounding their homes free from litter, dry leaves and any other combustible materials. Bushfire season commences 1 November 2004 – 31 March 2005.

Permits can be obtained from the Council office during this period. Fire Regulations and booklets are on display at the Council office.

Fireworks...Fireworks are only allowed to be set off by a pyrotechnician with the appropriate permits. Fines are applicable if not adhered to.

Mosquito Control...Residents are reminded to throw away any unwanted containers which hold water – old tyres, drums, place sand in pot plant bases, to seal or cover all openings in raintwater tanks and to ensure that roof gutters are not holding water. Wear loose clothing , apply insect repellent that contains DEET (Diethyl Toluamide) and use mosquito coils for outdoor activities.

Like all residents Council is shocked and stunned by the disastrous world-wide destruction caused by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.

However, we are all overwhelmed by the show of public support for relief efforts by fellow Australians.

In Roxby our community has rallied with gusto with community donations coming from so many, through a variety of sources.

As one such example, Council is pleased to support Roxby community’s “Walk for More to Build and Restore” 2005 Appeal and is providing support to the organisers by such matters as professional advice, communications, advertising public liability cover, logistic assistance with members of staff donating their time.

Like all residents, Council staff have been making their own individual contributions to this worthwhile appeal and trust that those who can participate in the walk to and from Woomera on Thursday, January 20 and Friday, January 21, and in Roxby on the Saturday morning of the January 22, 2005 will be well-supported by residents.

Australia Day Awards COUNCIL ACCOUNTANT…Anna Syta joins the Roxby Downs Council team this month as councils’ new accountant.

Council welcomes Anna to the team Roxby Downs Council welcomes its latest addition to the council team – accountant Anna Syta.

Ms Syta moved to Roxby Downs from Adelaide looking to further her experience in country centres.

Originally from Poland, Ms Syta moved to Australia 11 years ago with her two children – now aged 18 and 17 – who will continue to study in Adelaide.

“Australia is the best country in the

world, with so many opportunities,” Ms Syta told The Monitor.

“Roxby Downs is a very nice town and I can see lots of opportunities here as well.

“I especially like the way it is situated between the hills, like a little nest in the desert.

“The facilities are very good – the gym, the swimming pool, the library – and I’m looking forward to meeting more people.”

OLYMPIC DAM…The Cavpower Olympic Dam Branch held its customer appreciation evening at the Roxby Downs Golf Club on Tuesday, December 21, 2004.

A R2900G Loader (picture attached) was on display at the event prior to its delivery to new owners, WMC Resources.

WMC has purchased four of these loaders in the past 12 months and they are the largest underground loader built by Caterpillar.

They are also the largest used at the Olympic Dam Mine.

WMC has also purchased seven

AD55 underground trucks, four of which have already been delivered.

All of these machines are fullymanufactured in Burnie, Tasmania with a range of site-specific modifications made locally at the Olympic Dam Branch prior to delivery to WMC Resources.

“Thanks to all who attended the evening and enjoyed the festivities,” branch manager Brian Vonthiem said.

“We would like to extend our appreciation to all of our customers for their patronage during 2004 and we look forward to their continued custom in 2005.”

Club supporting the global community ROXBY DOWNS...When Rev. Tom Beever conceived the ‘Walk for More - to Build and Restore’ he was not prepared for the support that would immediately begin to flood in from the local community.

One of the first major sponsors to jump on board the appeal was the Roxby Downs Community Club with a donatio of $10,000.

The Club will also host the ‘welcome home’ party tomorrow, Friday, January 21, when walkers return to Roxby Downs.

Drinks, food and entertainment will be provided for walkers and supporters when they make it back from their more than 150km walk.

The same night, Club-goers will be asked to donate a gold coin at the door for the appeal by RoxFM volunteers.

Local DJ Gordon ‘Flash’ Walters will donate his services for the event with his fee being sent directly into the fund’s coffers.

“This is our role in the community, to support good causes” Mr Ellard said.

“We don’t just support the local community, but also the wider, global community.”

Sign up now and hit the courts TENNIS…The newly-formed Roxby Downs Tennis Association will hold a registration and grading day on January 22, 2005.

Already the association has attracted interest from more than 60 adults and around 30 juniors following the social tennis program during the school holidays.

The proposed competition will run from February to the end of April, while social tennis will continue on Wednesday nights but will be administered by the Roxby Downs Leisure Centre.

Teams of eight people will compete on four courts, starting at

6pm for juniors and 7pm for seniors, on Saturday nights from February 5, 2005.

Grades will be set during the grading night depending on numbers.

“Anyone wanting to play needs to come on down to the registration night and pay their fees, or contact one of the committee members,” Michelle Thomson told The Monitor.

Darts on target for a February start ROXBY DARTS…Roxby Darts is on target to start its new summer season Wednesday, February 2, 2005.

The season will see 10 teams playing two rounds at four venues on Wednesday nights, from 7.30pm.

Venues include the Olympic Dam Football Club, Roxby Downs Bowling and Golf Clubs, and the Roxby Downs Com-

munity Club.

While teams are now set for the competition, the night is a fun social evening and community members are invited along to watch or volunteer as scorers.

OD vs ROGUES…Olympic Dam was in to bat when Rogues won the toss on Saturdays.

In hindsight, it was a bad choice for Rogues who struggled with the restrictions of a wet pitch at the game’s start.

OD batted 301 off their 40 overs with Shinnick plundered the bowling for a magnificent 144. Shinnick brought up his century in the 23rd over of the match.

A very quick century for the game’s top batter.

Other scorers – J Kerr n/o 67, P Kemp 36.

Bowling for OD, Wellington took three wickets for 21. Young Haydn Shields bowled well, with two for 16 from six overs. J Kroll two for four – came in and cleaned up the tail.

Rogues declared at nine down, for 111. Scores of note – P Steer 32, D Kaminski 38.

WANDERERS vs WOOMERA…In other cricket news, Wanderers 165 narrowly beat Woomera 136 in a game hindered by threatening skies and very windy conditions.

For Wanderers, M Baldock’s innings of 34 delighted the crowd, while B Harper’s four wickets for seven from seven overs was exception. Young Ryan Briggs’ effort of three catches was outstanding while C Hancock’s fielding also deserved praise.

Wally Broome’s 62 was masterful and Chris Pillar’s three for 12 off four overs had everyone wondering what would have happened had he bowled his full eight overs.

Coober Pedy joins W&DFL

Summer fun and safety VACSWIM…More than 170 children attended the Roxby Downs VacSwim program over the school holidays.

While numbers were slightly down on previous years, local organisers were happy with the results.

The local program involved three instructors and three assistant instructors.

VacSwim encourages water safety and

confidence in school-aged children.

“The kids have been great and so has the weather, which always makes it easier to get in the water,” VacSwim coordinator Belinda White told The Monitor.

AUSSIE RULES...After 10 years without a team or a league to play in, the Coober Pedy Football Club will again don guernseys in 2005 as part of the Woomera and Districts Football League.

For young players like Darryl Doolan, who has spent the past five seasons travelling to Alice Springs every Saturday to play the game he loves, the decision is a welcome one.

“I love football and I just want to play so Roxby Downs is going to be a lot closer to home.

“I want to be out there playing football, not sitting at home watching it on TV.” Coober Pedy committee members have been rallying local support and lobbying the W&DFL for more than two years, after pulling out of the league in the mid-90s when local player support waned.

After a meeting with representatives of all four W&DFL clubs, Coober Pedy club president Robin Walker was “overwhelmed” by the decision.

“We’re over the moon at the moment,” Mr Walker told The Monitor.

“It gives us the chance to give a lot of young people an opportunity to play football and to get out and meet new people,” he said.

“Later on it might open up competition opportunities for netball and other sports.

“Later on we’ll work at bringing our AusKick kids down here, maybe for a [demonstration] game at halftime.”

W&DFL president Graham Warren welcomed the move.

“I personally believe it’s great news,” Graham Warren told The Monitor after the meeting on Monday, January 17.

“When all over regional South Australia clubs are pulling out of associations for lack of support, here’s a league that’s admitting a new club,” he said.

“It’s good for the players, it’s good for the clubs and it’s good for football.

“This is going to be a big opportunity for the indigenous community of Coober Pedy who, we’re told, will make up a large part of the team. We’ve been very impressed with the professionalism of their submission and we’re looking forward to seeing them out there on the field.

“As president of the league I also appreciate the professionalism of our four local clubs and their constructive comments during the meeting - I think it’s all been very positive.”
