Roxby an uncertain future

While the current global financial crisis has created havoc in many industries causing the crash of major international and local corporate companies and serious job losses worldwide, Roxby Downs seems to be faring better than most. Reports of local job losses in excess of 150 people, the loss of contracts and some businesses doing it tough, have been rampant throughout Roxby Downs over the holiday break. While there is no doubt there have been job losses and cut backs within some companies, others have not been impacted at all, with some recording very positive business over the past few months. While the accuracy of the reports concerning job losses and cut backs have been difficult to verify, The Monitor spoke to a range of businesses and organizations to ascertain how the crisis is directly impacting on local business and the community at large. Responses were mixed with a sense of uncertainty in some quarters, ranging to a quiet optimism in others. In many cases, businesses were unable or unwilling to comment, except to say “We’re okay”. The Monitor asked BHP Billiton about the accuracy of recent reports stating there had been considerable job losses, particularly amongst contractors, and all hiring had been stopped and budgets had been severely cut. The Companies’ response was non committal on the reports, with Mr Paul Walters, Vice President of Human Resources, stating: “As a general rule Olympic Dam/BHP Billiton does not comment on rumour or speculation, however it is widely known that commodity prices have fallen steeply in recent months and that the world’s economy has begun to tighten. “To ensure the company continues to deliver value for shareholders it is duty bound to review all of its global operations, including Olympic Dam.

“In terms of the day-to-day running of the business we can say that we constantly monitor, review and modify our business operations as part of normal practice.” Mr Walters went on to say any significant changes to their global operating strategy will be taken by BHP Billiton’s head office and is legally obliged to report the changes through the Australian Stock Exchange before commenting in the media. “To date, head office has not reported any changes to the ASX,” said Mr Walters. While rumours continue to circulate concerning business operations and employee retrenchment, Precision Engineering was one of the few companies to respond to The Monitor’s questions concerning the effects of the global economic downturn. “We’re probably like any company, looking at the best way to position ourselves to cope with the changes that are likely to affect us at some stage and implement a management and business plan that maintains our viability,” said Phil Lacey of Precision Engineering. Mr Lacey confirmed that no loss of contracts or employees has occurred within the company, saying: “We’re still trying to maintain our full crew of employees and as far as our contracts go, we’re holding them well enough at the moment. “It’s really too early to see the full impact (of the economic downturn).” Mr Tony Place, of Career Employment Group, said apprenticeship intakes were down 50 percent. Mr Place said while intakes had slowed at the moment, he urges young people pursing apprenticeships to apply for and continue with Pre-Vocational courses. “In six months time things could change, things pick up and people could be looking at putting on additional staff, including apprentices,” said Mr Place.
