CALL TO ARMS... Victims of vandalism are calling for a stop to the recent spate of malicious damage by local youth, from left, Bec Penglase, Lyn White, Kath Macalister, Constable Sam Yates, Sue Penglase and Liz Chilton. Roxby Downs Swimming Pool, above, is one of the latest targets of vandals.

Enough is enough! Community calls for an end to spate of vandalism ROXBY DOWNS…Local business and service-providers are up in arms following a spate of violence in the Christmas school holidays. Since December 2003, a series of Roxby Downs businesses have been targeted in the town’s most serious incident of repeat vandalism for several years. Several businesses and Roxby Downs Area School have been the victim of broken windows and signs, the National Australia Bank

ATM was damaged and a fire hose turned on and pushed through the ‘drop box’ at Blockbuster Video damaging fittings, CDs and DVDs. “Once again, it’s a small minority that are making the majority pay for their behaviour,” Blockbuster spokeswoman Liz Chilton told The Monitor this week. “And because they are underage, perpetrators are getting away with it and the victims have to pay. “But if businesses have to start putting up prices then everyone

pays.” In what is probably one of the most serious cases of destructive vandalism over these holidays, the Roxby Downs Leisure Centre and Youth Services were forced to close doors following rubbish and furniture being thrown into the pool, and damage to the fibreglass slide and an electric pumping system. While police have reported several youth, centre manager Laurence Duggan told The Monitor he believed it was the oldest members of

the group who caused the most damage during the incident. “This kind of damage is unprecedented at the centre – sometimes we have people break in to swim but this was major damage,” he said. “On the other hand, we are incredibly proud of those young people who came forward, and those who, when they were approached by police, admitted to trespassing.” The most recent incident occurred at the Roxby Downs Area School

Fire hydrants were turned on, and damaged, and drains blocked in order to flood school grounds. “This isn’t the first time the school’s been a victim of vandalism – we’ve had windows smashed, classes broken into and this year we even had teacher’s term teaching programs stolen out of a filing cabinet,” Roxby Downs Area School acting principal Kath Macalister said. ...continued Page 2

Nominations called for advisory group FAR NORTH REGION…Coordinators are calling for community nominations to the Outback Health Advisory Group. Plans for the committee, which will provide community direction to the Port Augusta Hospital Board which administers local health services, were outlined at a community meeting in late 2003. “I thought the support for the first meeting last year was good and many of the significant stakeholders within Roxby were there,” Roxby Downs Director of Nursing and Executive Officer Janine Connell said. “We can’t discount the importance of the people there but I’d like to see more of the average Roxby Downs citizens take up a role within the advisory group. “This is a chance for local, everyday residents to have a say in how their health services will grow and meet the needs of the community in the future “People don’t need any special skills or experience to be involved, they just need to care about how health is delivered within Roxby Downs and want to get involved.” The committee is targeting voting members from throughout the Roxby Downs, Andamooka, Woomera, Olympic Dam and Pimba regions. Residents with an interest in joining the committee, or who would like to learn more about the group, can contact Janine Connel or Kathy Wooldridge at Roxby Downs Health Services for more information – ph 8671 9020. The next committee meeting will be held on Monday, February 16, at the Roxby Downs Health Services seminar room, at 7pm – all are welcome. Nomination forms are available from Roxby Downs Health Services.

Community calls for an end to vandalism ...continued from Page 1 “These vandals seem to have actively targeted services that cater to youth – they’re hurting themselves. “Public schools are funded from the public purse – when they hit are school they’re paying for it with their parents’ and their own tax monies. “They need to find something more productive to do with their time because that money could be put to much better use in our schools. “If this is more than just senseless vandalism, if there’s a complaint behind it, then there are better ways to resolve it.” While local police can usually expect an increase of vandalism in school holidays, this year has been unusually high, Sgt Richard Hobbs told The Monitor last week. “Incidences of vandalism are usually very low in Roxby Downs and we do usually see an increase in school holidays but the incidences in this period has been higher than in other years,” he said. Sgt Hobbs said the incidences are believed to be the work of a small group of young people. “Their actions are costing the whole community large amounts of money, wasting a lot of people’s time – the police, the people who fix the damage and clean up their mess after them. “But they are affecting themselves as much as everyone else in the community and that’s the sad bit.” While police are following up a series of leads, and several youths have been reported and spoken to in relation to trespass, no charges have yet been laid. Sgt Hobbs called on the community to speak out against the vandalism and to provide any relevant information to police. “We need information as to who is doing the damage – whether it be actual eyewitness accounts or even rumours so we can start our investigations somewhere. “The hard thing is that most of this damage is occurring very late at the night, or the early hours of the morning, and these youths are pretty much undisturbed by witnesses. “We’ve increased police foot patrols at night, targeting areas which have previously been targeted and we have reported more youths for various offences – mainly alcohol-related in that time. “Our message to these people is ‘stop it now, you will get caught eventually’. “But it’s not just the responsibility of the youths involved. How many parents know where their kids are after midnight? “These kids belong to someone – are their parents taking their parenting responsibilities seriously?” Roxby Downs Youth Services representatives Bec and Sue Penglase told The Monitor they were very disappointed that “these people are making the community think twice about how they treat youth in this town”. “We’ve been working very hard to raise community support and get services for local youth, and once again, there’s a small group out there overshadowing the good work of most of the community’s youth,” Sue Penglase said. “We haven’t been hit yet but if this continues it will affect youth services because the leisure centre might think twice about giving us the use of the pool and the centre, and the community won’t see local youth in a good light.”

Olympic Dam FAR NORTH REGION... Communities throughout the Far North Region celebrated Australia Day on Monday, January 26. Local citizens, young and old, were recognised for their commitment and contributions to their home towns with a series of citizen awards. In Roxby Downs, long-time resident Val Lamb was surprised to discover she was the recipient of the local citizen award, not husband Ken as she had been told by organisers. “I came here expecting to see Ken accept this award - and then they called my name,” she told The Monitor on monday. “I didn’t expect it and I don’t know if I’ve done enough to deserve it - there’s so many people out there who have given so much more than me.” When Mrs Lamb left her seat to accept the award she was surprised to see her parents, brother and sister-inlaw in the audience, who had left Kimba at 5am to be in Roxby Downs for the ceremony. Mrs Lamb has been a long-term supporter of the Royal Flying Doctors Service and women’s health in Roxby Downs. The Roxby Downs ceremony was hosted at the local swimming pool and the award were followed by novelty activities such as thong-throwing. In Woomera, more than 80 people attended an Australia Day barbecue at Breen Park where local resident Tom

Blackie was named as citizen of the year. Michael Ingold also received a certificate of appreciation after being nominated for the award, and the young citizen award was presented to 15-year-old Annalise Nicholls - a keen contributor at community events in Woomera and chairperson of the ‘student voice’ at the local school. “I think the best reward is being thanked when you’ve helped out,” she said. In Andamooka, more than 50 people attended an evening ceremony which included light-hearted awards, as well as recognising the contributions of local citizens including citizen of the year Graham Edwards. In Andamooka, long-time resident Graham Edwards was named citizen of the year. Mr Edwards, now retired, has lived locally for 24 years and has offered his untiring dedication to the Andamooka community, volunteering for many services and projects in the town. Most recently, he was a driving force behind the upgrade of the kitchen at the Andamooka Community Hall, spending countless hours on a grader upkeeping the local airstrip as well as local roads and has been an active volunteer in APOMA, the Andamooka Emergency Services and the Frontier Services.

ANDAMOOKA...Andamooka hosted its own Schutzenfest festival this month to coincide with the Adelaide celebrations of the annual event. Around 50 people attended the social event hosted by the Opal Hotel Social Club. PIMBA...The first journey of a freight train on the Adelaide to Darwin railway was celebrated on January 15, 2004. The train, which heralded a new era of interstate transport and is expected to bring new opportunities to Alice Springs and Port Augusta, has received mixed reactions from the Pimba community. Pimba relies on trucking as the town’s major income. While a spur line and siding does exist at Pimba to offer possibilities for passengers travelling by train to the area, there are no plans currently in the pipeline for freight trains to stop at Pimba. Despite concerns that interstate trucking numbers may be reduced, residents are confident that local transport opportunities will continue to support the town’s trucking industry. FAR NORTH REGION...Changes to firearms laws in SA have prompted a ‘buyback’ and amnesty and local police are inviting gun-owners to hand in their illegallyowned weapons before March 31, 2004. The changes specifically target handgun owners, and will affect many sporting shooters including pistol club members, and collectors. Penalties have increased and gun-owners are urged to visit their local police station and ensure they comply with new regulations and restrictions. For more information, contact the Buy Back Centre on 8463 7340, or the Firearms Hotline - ph 8204 2495. SOUTH AUSTRALIA...Teaching history was made this week when 24 SA teachers started the school year as the state’s first ‘country teaching scholars’. Each of the scholars received financial support from the State Government for the final year of their study in 2003 under the inaugural ‘country teaching scholarships’ initiative. Scholarship teachers are guaranteed jobs on graduation in country schools. In the Far North Region, two scholarship teachers have been placed at Roxby Downs Area School, one at Leigh Creek Area School, one at Coober Pedy Area School and one at Port Augusta Secondary School. Pimba residents’ 12 year wait for power PIMBA...Pimba residents’ 12-year quest for access to public power may soon be over. Despite living right under a string of powerlines, most of the community’s 30 or so residents run their homes on generator power. The community originally applied to access grid electricity in 1993 - and they’ve been waiting ever since. “It’s just ludicrous for some of us to have power and some of us not when the power lines run right overhead,” Pimba resident Ashley Bannerman said. “I’ve actually got power, and so has Spud’s Roadhouse, but then there’s houses in between that don’t.” Grid electricity was

originally made available to many of Pimba’s railway employees in the 1960s, while the Spud’s Roadhouse was hooked up to the grid around 10 years ago by Woomera administrators. But now the Pimba Progress Association wants to see the entire community powered up - and they want it soon. “We’ve been told that it’s coming, but we’ve been told that a lot of times over the years,” association president Rex Ridley said. Locally-based contractor Cowell Electric has been engaged to carry out the installation, while Woomera-based

Australian Defense Services have been approved to supply power to the community. However, the 12-year wait has been prolonged, again, while negotiations for the replacement of two faulty transformers and the location of ‘point of supply’ are underway. Meanwhile, Pimba residents are expending as much as $1000 every six weeks for each of the community’s five diesel generators. “And that’s only running it in the mornings from 6.30am to 8.30am, and 3.30pm to 10.30pm at night - there’s no air conditioning and no

power during the middle of the day, we just can’t afford to run it like that,” Graham Blatchford said. “We pay more rates than in places like Georgetown, and yet we have no garbage collection, no septic, no road maintenance and no power,” he said. The Pimba community will contribute around $45000 to the cost of power poles, wire and installation. The Pimba Progress Association hopes to be notified of an installation date before its upcoming AGM on Sunday, February 1, 10am, at Spuds Roadhouse. Other items on the

agenda at the meeting include the quest to see local residents freehold local land, instead of living on yearly lease from the State Government. “We’re in the process of trying to get land freehold, as opposed to yearly lease,” Mr Ridley told The Monitor last week. “We have had some correspondence with various state departments but we don’t know where we stand at the moment. We own our homes but not the land. Andamooka used to be like this, but now they can freehold, and we want to too.”

BUSINESS

Business input sought for local signage ROXBY DOWNS…Roxby Downs Council and the local business forum are calling for greater business involvement in discussions for local business signage. The issue of business signage opportunities has been a regular topic of interest at monthly business forum meetings. “The issues have been, basically, that the businesses in the industrial area feel a little left out of the loop,” business forum chair Bob Stainer said. “They feel that, because they’re not in the main street, they’re not getting the same exposure so it was suggested they do something towards getting their own structure on Olympic Way and using that to collectively advertise their businesses “We talked of the type, the location, who will pay for it - all the associated costs and effort involved “We are told by those in the know that it is going well, but we need more feedback. “What do businesses want - how can we make it work? “There’s also the issue of sport advertising - we have lots of opportunities to advertise businesses at the footy grounds or the basketball stadium if we can come up with a system that suits everyone.” Roxby Downs Council approached local businesses late last year with design and function suggestions for signage at the Roxby Downs Industrial State and on Olympic Way. Businesses are again invited to have their say, before the February business forum, by contacting Margaret Anchor at the Roxby Downs Council - ph 8671 0011.

COMFORT...The Adelaide Airport Motel - luxurious inside and out - in a convenient location.

Adelaide Airport Motel - service and comfort 30 years of hospitality experience has recently landed on the doorstep of the newly refurbished Adelaide Airport Motel – and the Armstrong family are ready to greet new arrivals. And with offers such as 10 days of free parking with a minimum one night stay, a free 24-hour pick up and drop off shuttle bus to the Adelaide Airport and a wide range of suites available, regional visitors are sure to drop in. New manager Steve Armstrong said the family took over the busy motel, just outside the airport complex on Sir Donald Bradman Drive, in December. The whole family is now in full flight running the popular Adelaide business. Mr Armstrong has had 30 years of experience in the hospitality business including 10 years as a

steward and air chef with QANTAS – and daughter Stacey, a graduate from the Regency International Catering School, has opened Stacey’s Flight Deck Bar and Restaurant. Along with wife Barbara and son Adrian, a member of the Australian ice hockey team, the Adelaide Airport Motel has become a real family affair. Mr Armstrong said the motel had recently undergone a full refurbishment and included a wide range of accommodation alternatives including fantastic spa suites as well as family suites with adjoining rooms for the kids. “Once you check in, your holiday begins,” Mr Armstrong said. And that is not just a cliché – The Adelaide Airport Motel has some very attractive offers for people

staying in Adelaide, or travelling to other destinations via the Adelaide Airport. Mr Armstrong said the motel had a lot to offer its patrons including the 24-hour pick up and drop off shuttle bus to the Airport and the free parking deal. “Public transport is at the door, with a regular bus service to the city and Glenelg – it will take you about 10 minutes,” Mr Armstrong said. He said the motel’s recent refurbishment made it popular with both families and the business sector. Stacey’s Flight Deck Bar and Restaurant is open from 6am to 10am mornings for breakfast and 6pm to 10pm for evening meals – room service is also available. The Adelaide Airport Motel is located at 406 Sir Donald Bradman Drive - ph (08) 8234 4000.

Since establishing a permanent presence in Roxby Downs in 1998, the Roxby Downs Vet Clinic has slowly expanded their services to Roxby as the town has grown and matured. Initially the clinic was based in the old pool kiosk opposite the Roxby Club with the vet consulting one day a month. This was gradually expanded to two days a fortnight and in 2001. The clinic moved to its current Richardson Place position in November 2002. The new airconditioned premises has allowed a large expansion in the services offered by the veterinary clinic. The vet now consults for three days every fort-

night from the clinic. In December the clinics in Roxby Downs and Whyalla were linked and now share a common database. The biggest advance is that video conferencing is now available with a vet in Whyalla, significantly improving the ability of nurses to treat emergencies in Roxby Downs, when the vet isn’t in town. From January 19 the clinic hours have been extended to 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday making the services far more accessable to shift workers in Roxby Downs. The clinic can be contacted on 8671 0730 or the vet for after hours emergencies on 0419 806 392.

Emergency volunteers needed for database ROXBY DOWNS…Roxby Downs health services are calling on local residents to register as part of the town’s emergency assistance database. In the case of a major emergency, community members with first aid, nursing or other appropriate experience will be called on to assist emergency and health services. “We do have a list of people with relevant experience, but even if someone is on that list they need to re-register,” unit manager Leanne Setford told The Monitor last week. “People with first aid or nursing experience are our major priority, but there’s lots of ways people can help in an emergency. “If there was a plane or a bus crash in town these volunteers might make the difference.” The call comes at a time when local emergency services are planning for a disaster exercise in March this year. RDAS welcomes new team of teachers NEW STAFF...Roxby Downs Area School welcomed its newest addition to the local teaching team, from left, back, Zane Petty, Renae Litster, Daniel Seidel, Nardene Edmonds, Melanie Wastell, front, Natalie Jones, Irena Vigar, Jodie Meyer and Gillian Oak. Parents and students will have a chance to meet the new staff in person at a barbecue on Wednesday, February 11, from 6pm.

Year 12 enrolments strong following 2003 successes 2003 proved to be an excellent step forward for Roxby Downs Area School’s senior school. Year 12 results were released on December 18 and were the best ever recorded by the school, with all but three students successfully completing their SACE certificate. This was especially pleasing considering that 2003 saw the largest Year 12 class ever to go through the school. Top marks went to Mikaela Aldenhoven who scored A-grades in three subjects, including a perfect 20 for Food and Hospitality. A-grades were also recorded in English Communications (4), Food and Hospitality (2) and Mathematical Applications (1). A further 47 per cent of students achieved B-grades - well above the state average. Joslyn Fox, RDAS Assistant Principal 7-12, was very pleased with the overall results. “Congratulations must go to both students and their teachers,” she said. “Solid results like this can only happen with an effective partnership.” Year 12 numbers are remaining steady at RDAS this year with over GRADUATES...2003 Year 12 RDAS students with teachers at the year’s formal graduation function. 20 students enrolled for 2004.

New program for immunisations ROXBY DOWNS…Children’s free immunisations, for children up to five years, are currently being offered at the Roxby Downs Community Health Service. Children’s immunisations are offered at the health centre every Tuesday morning from 9am till noon, Community Health Nurse Kathy Wooldridge told The Monitor last week. “Immunisations are essential – they stop children contracting a range of potentially fatal diseases,” she said. “Children need to be immunised to be registered for childcare, schools or kindy.

“In addition to immunisations, we have a general service on Tuesdays provided by the Child and Youth Health Nurse Liz Drefke where children can be weighed and measured.” This year Roxby Downs Community Health Service will offer an immunisation program in association with local schools this year including the Hepatitis B immunisation for Year 8s and the ADT Tetanus shots for Year 9s. Immunisations are registered on a main database which can be checked anywhere in Australia.

Council names Val citizen of the year Roxby Downs Council is pleased to announce that the 2004 Citizen of the Year Award for the Municipality of Roxby Downs has been awarded to Val Lamb. Since moving to Roxby in 1987 with husband Ken and children Kelli-Jo, Donna and Darren, Val has been a silent partner in the development of the successful Olympic Dam Transport business that has consistently been an active supporter of local community groups. Val has been an outstanding community contributor involved in the early formation of the Roxby Downs Racing Club as one of Roxby’s early pioneers, ensuring that the club, track and facilities were a success. The importance of the Royal Flying Doctors to Roxby was acutely recognised by Val who was a prime mover (excuse the pun) with husband Ken in organising our hugely successful Royal Doctors Fundraising Committee. Over the past 13 years or so this has raised many thousands of dollars for the operation of the RFDS, of which all residents and visitors greatly benefit. Val has also been involved in raising funds for the Crippled Children’s Association with assistance from Marie McCormack, Janet Darcy and others. She has also been involved in Health Hounds through the local hospital on a voluntary basis, giving hands on assistance and knowledge. Val has continued to be involved with the community through her involvement with the Leisure Centre in an unpaid capacity preparing personal fitness programs and aerobics instruction at the gym. She has an affinity for helping people from all walks of life both in their good times and bad. However, perhaps the greatest compliment is Val’s quiet unassuming way in which she helps individuals in need by acts of kindness, such as the organising over a number of years of a weekend away for wives of local pastoralists and others in the community. These have included activities such as flying, hang

This award is well and truly deserved and follows on as part of a strong family commitment to community service, with husband Ken a previous Citizen of the Year winner in 1994 and daughter Kelli-Jo who accepted the Community Event of the Year Award on behalf of her parents for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Golf Day and Auction in 2000. Val is a very worthy winner and on behalf of the Roxby Downs Community we truly thank her for her contribution to our community.

Roxbydowns.com - a work in progress In 2002 the Roxby Downs Council opened a website designed to promote all areas in Roxby Downs and the community. Since its opening the website has always been popular with overseas visitors and enquiries in the forums indicate a lot of interest in the website from people who have lived here or plan to move here. The development was commissioned and since its first publishing the ongoing work has been performed by both the Contractor and Council staff. Late in 2003 Council was fortunate to gain the services of Yvette Mooney as our official Webmaster, and things have been jumping since. A new life has emerged, there have been many subtle but important changes! Links updated, a new text menu system, and over all updating of the information available. On entering the roxbydowns.com website you are greeted with a fine “flash” animated menu, that when used, identifies what can be found in each section of the website. At the bottom of each page is a text menu for those with limited

Golfers swing through summer season Summer golf has been a hit with golfers so far this off-season. The nine-hole format has appealed to members and non-members alike. Early starts have helped beat the heat and on the hot days, we were fortunate enough to have the heat come in on the last or second to last hole. The course has stood up very well in the extreme heat that Roby suffered in December and early January. The greens were kept a little longer than normal which has helped them through the heat. Being a little longer has, on the other hand, made putting a little slow. Players are having to strike their putts a lot harder than usual and find that the line of their putts is a lot straighter than the read of the green. The fairways are in a reasonable condition all things considered. The tee blocks are the one thing that have taken a beating in the heat. Due to summer water restrictions, less water has been put on the tee blocks and fairways, but they will come back nicely when restrictions ease and the summer heat subsides. The course has an abundance of bird life, the birds taking advantage of the flowering trees and bushes, grass and water on the course. Fortunately the course hasn’t had the Corellas on the course with the birds preferring the town median strip and footy oval for their attentions. Golfers have taken to the nine hole format with relish. 50 per cent of the players over the summer have reduced their handicaps. This is reflected in the good scores posted by golfers. The events are alternated with Stableford, Par and Stroke and will continue through to the end of February. The last two games will be a 4BBBB stroke and finally a two person Ambrose on the final day of summer golf on March 13, 2004. This will also be the Presentation Day for Summer golf with the Summer Golf Champion and eclectic winner announced followed by a barbecue lunch. The Summer Champion will be the player with the best three rounds. In the last fortnight, a game of Stableford was played on the January 18, 2004. The winner was Hugh Beveridge with 20 points and the runner up was Di Beveridge with 17 points and

GOLF…David Gibson and Nick Kostalis at the weekend’s golfing during Roxby Downs Golf Club’s summer golfing program. third was Tony Holbrook on 16 points. On January 25, 2004 a par event was held and due to the long weekend it was a small field. Nick Kostalas made up for his poor round the week before and took out the event with a Plus Two. David Gibson, his playing partner on the day, took out the runner up with square on the card. Nick had a great drive on the novelty hole on the first, which no one could better following his group. Sunday, February 1, 2004 will be a stroke round. The novelty will be Best second shot on hole eight, which must be on the green. Everyone is welcome so come and enjoy a game of golf. DERS A E R e r Mo DS! for your A BMX COUPLE…Chris and Kathy Cooper have been driving forces behind the Roxby Downs BMX Club since its inception two years ago. The pair are now moving, with their four children, to Newman in WA.

Coopers pack up bikes to go west The success of BMX racing in Roxby Downs owes much to the Cooper family who leave the town this month for Newman, WA. Roxby Downs residents Chris and Kathy Cooper - with children Eden, 6, Reece, 10, Ethan, 12, and Marshall, 13 – were founding members of the Roxby Downs BMX Club and have been vocal in pushing for new facilities, community support and interstate competition opportunities for local racers. “We’ve lived in Roxby Downs for nearly four years and if I’d known what a good place it would be to raise young kids I would have come 10 years earlier,” Mrs Cooper told The Monitor this week. The Coopers saw three of their four children race at an international level last year, successfully

representing the Roxby Downs BMX Club in the Pacific-Oceania Games and the BMX World Titles in Perth. “Our hope is that, after we leave, the community will throw its support behind the BMX Club committee and see our new track finished,” Mr Cooper said. “Roxby Downs has the chance to be the place other regional BMX racers come to compete.” In addition to their commitments to the family’s first love – BMX – Mr Cooper has been a regular supporter of junior basketball, and a DJ on community radio station 105.5 RoxFM. Mrs Cooper has been a constant contributor to her children’s school and playgroups, Community House and the ‘strengthening our families’ program.

Hockey season to hit off The Roxby Downs Indoor Hockey Association is looking to commence the 2004 season. Due to a number of requests, a short social competition is planned to be held during term one before the main competition, which is due to start towards the end of April. The popularity of indoor hockey has boomed over the past couple of years, especially with the junior teams. Hockey caters for children from two years right through to A-Grade. One of the main aims of the committee is to encourage team play, ball and stick skills especially for the junior players, in a happy and safe environment. The committee has made a large range of safety equipment available for players of all ages during the past couple of seasons. Unfortunately though, due to the transient nature of this lovely town that we live in, the committee and

volunteers are again seeking more support. With such a high number of junior players, we would really love to see more senior coaches/mentors come out and pass on their skills and knowledge. The committee will be holding a general meeting to discuss the immediate and long-term future of Indoor Hockey on Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at the Leisure Centre meeting room at 7.30pm. Anyone interested in helping out with the social competition, coaching a junior team, or simply just interested in moulding the future of our competition please come along. Once the new committee has been formed and a plan is formulated for the future of hockey, nominations for all ages will be open for the main competition, so that we can get the teams structured prior to April. Darts to start up in Roxby Downs Roxby Downs darts players can hit the target in their own home town this year with the advent of a new local competition. Organisers are calling for teams, players and venues for the new competition which is expected to be held on Wednesday nights. Organisers Ros Harris and Bob Stainer expect the competition to kick off in March. The pair have heralded the competition as a social evening for novices and experts alike. The floating competition will be held at the Roxby Downs Tavern, Community Club and Golf Club, but other venues are invited to be part of the program. “At the moment we’ll be able to play in the Tavern, the Roxby Downs Community Club and the Golf Club - but we’re keen to share the support around other local businesses and venues so they can take advantage of a good opportunity to make a bit of money. “There’s also the chance of some inter-town competitions with other leagues” Mr Stainer is calling for local darts players to nominated their mixed teams of four to Ms Harris before February 13, by phoning 8671 0163.

A RACY PAIR…Wayne and Ruth Dempsey have developed a shared love of dirt circuit racing which they now endeavour to pass on to the youth of the Roxby Downs community. The pair are pictured with the vehicle Ruth was given by Dial-a-Tow businessman John Hitchcock when the raffle ticket he bought from Mrs Dempsey won.

Local couple putting youth behind the wheel Roxby Downs racers Wayne and Ruth Dempsey have developed a shared love of dirt circuit since they first got involved with the sport locally in 1987. It was Mr Dempsey’s original involvement at Woomera racing – an obvious extension of his own business as an auto-electrician – that later led to the inception of the Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club in 1988, followed by the club’s first race meeting in 1989. Until a few years ago Ruth supported the club off the track, but it was in 1996 that she put aside the canteen keys and the paperwork and picked up a helmet to climb behind the wheel herself. “At the moment, my main objective for being out there is to get more local women and their families into the sport,” she said. “The girls who race, we have a great time and we can be competitive and still enjoy the social time when we get off the track. “For the young kids, it’s a great chance to build a shared interest with mum and dad while learning some responsibility and sportsmanship. “And there’s no safer place to learn to drive.” The Dempseys and Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club, will offer six cars to local businesses this month in an attempt to involved more youth in the club. “We’ve got six cortinas that we’re going to offer to selected businesses and they can do the bar work on the cars themselves and we’ll offer the driver training and support to their drivers – whether they’re employees, apprentices or family,” Mrs Dempsey said. “We’d especially like to see more girls on the track.

“Last year we had five kids join the junior driver training program - we gave them some time and training and this year they’re out there competing in their own cars. “Anyone from age 10 can be part of that driver education and whether you’re young or old there’s the chance to come out and just have a gentle spin in one of the drivers’ car to see if it’s something you’d like to try. “This is a very safe sport – there is training and regulations and drivers are completely encapsulated in their vehicles. “We’ve even had roll-overs at the track and no one was hurt. “I’d say it’s safer than your sports like basketball and football where you hear of kids breaking arms and legs.” Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club boasts around 25 racing cars and more than 200 members. “I learned most of what I know now from Wayne and from listening to the other racers, and that’s what great about the Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club – there’s lots of people in the club who are available to help you learn what you need to know to be part of this sport,” Mrs Dempsey said.. “You don’t have to spend a heap of cash to get into this sport,” the three-time state champion and four-time Roxby Downs champion said. “My advice is to spend your money wisely, buy a road-running car with good running gear, that you can drive comfortably, and then come and talk to other racers about the priorities. “There’s lots of levels you can start off at because the local racing is handicapped.”

Drivers hit the track for open day The Roxby Downs Sporting Car Club will host a club open day on February 21, 2004 at 5pm at the Red Dunes Raceway. The day will offer social events for new members and spectators, as well as practice for potential drivers and current crews. Driver’s assessments, memberships renewals and practice will all be taking place. Come along and take the opportunity to look at the club grounds and cars practicing. The club’s first points meeting will be held on February 28, 2004, at 7pm.. For more information contact Debbie

SPORT Successful carnival Dreams of a golden for country swimmers future for local swimmer The Roxby Downs Swimming Club participated in the Annual SA Country Championships in Port Pirie this month. The Championships are held in a different location each year and involve groups such as Roxby Downs, the Riverland and right down to the West Coast, and Port Lincoln. The Roxby Downs group took nine swimmers to the event, and brought home three placings. Dominika Jamnicky came first in the 11 and under females 100m Breaststroke to take out the Country Championship in her age group. Spencer Crafter-King came third in the 14-15-yearold males in the 100m Breaststroke and Connor Morgan came sixth in the 11 and under males 100m Freestyle. Organisers heralded the day and congratulated all swimmers on a top effort. The next event for local swimmers will be the Roxby Downs swimming carnival which is to be held at the town pool on February 7, 2004. Not long after the event, tryouts will be held for the SA Water Championships to be held in Adelaide on March 20-21, 2004. Anyone interested can try out for this competition. The first three placings in any event will be eligible to enter the meet. In addition to the local club representatives, Roxby Downs resident Tara-Jane Hill also performed well, representing Port Augusta Swimming Club at the State Country Swimming Titles last week. The young swimmer placed in the state’s top 10 50m breaststroke and the 50m freestyle for country competitors. She received a gold in both the 15 and under girls Medley relay, and the 15 and under girls freestyle relay. She received silver in the 11 and under Freestyle and Butterfly events, and bronze in the 11 and under breast stroke. Tara-Jane also competed in the state championships at the weekend, but results were not yet available at time of printing.

Roxby Downs swimmer Dominika Jamnicky is planning to follow in her Olympian mother’s footsteps and represent Australia in the quest for Olympic gold. But the sporty 11-year-old, who trains five or six days every week, won’t be slogging it out on the European Handball court like mum Jana, she’ll be in the pool. In fact, Dominika made a good start on her plans this month, taking home a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke during the state country championships at Port Pirie last week. The win represented a personal best for Dominika and a six second improvement on her time trials leading up to the event. “I was very excited about the medal – breastroke is my favourite event but I also swam in the freestyle, backstroke and medley relay,” she told The Monitor last week. The next step for Dominika is to test her breaststroke skills at a SAPSASA level this school term. She also hopes to perform well at the upcoming local carnival on February 7 this year.

MEDALLIST...Dominika Jamnicky, 11, took home a gold medal in the recent South Australian Country Championships at Port Pirie. Dominika hopes to carry on in her Olympian mother’s footsteps and one day represent Australia in her chosen sport.
