An ambitious idea to increase the level of Lake Mary is being considered by a Roxby Downs resident and local user of the lake. Rob Trice claims for the cost of $10,000 he can increase the level of Lake Mary by at least one metre. “Since the lake filled through the heavy rains we had in February 2007 it has dropped just over one and a half metres through soakage and evaporation,” he said. “It’s now just over four and a half metres at its deepest point. “It is Roxby’s playground and probably has about 1 year of useful life to go before it becomes unusable to the public, that is of course if we don’t get any further heavy rain in the meantime,” he said. From about the 20 kilometre mark south of Roxby Downs a series of lakes still hold water, but there’s one of particular interest to Rob Trice. “It’s an unnamed lake, much smaller in size than Lake Mary, just five kilometres further south towards Woomera on the same side of the road as Lake Mary,” he said. “It’s about 2 metres deep. “I’ve been thinking that if we could

pump the water from this Lake into Lake Mary it will extend its life for water sport activities.” Rob has spoken with contractors and businesses such as Coates Hire and Monadelphous about his idea. “I reckon we could use a 10 inch poly pipe and a pump that could handle 9 to 10 litres a second. “We could have the pump operating day and night for 30 days to pump that one metre back into Lake Mary and potentially extend its life by a couple of years. “I could put a diesel tank next to the pump to continually supply it with fuel, and I’d go out at regular intervals to make sure everything was working well. “The base of Lake Mary, mainly clay is fully saturated so you won’t lose any of the new water through soakage,” Mr Trice said. “I’ve worked out an approximate cost of about $10,000 to do the job. Mr Trice says it’s just an idea at this stage. “I’ve been talking to people about it but haven’t even looked at the approvals process and any other hurdles that may stop the plan in its tracks,” he said.
