Something Wonderful Something wonderful happened in Roxby just recently and it has nothing to do with anyone winning lotto, seeing a bit of rain or obtaining autographs from two stars of the Port Adelaide footy club who were here last week.

My 14 year old son Stephen has always enjoyed tinkering around with electrical equipment such as old computers but he recently developed an interest in Remote Control (RC) cars.

Stephen’s interest in RC cars occurred a few Sundays back when we came across the Roxby Downs Remote Control Car Club at the Mitre 10 car park.

We were out walking when we heard the sound of the RC cars coming from the car park and thought we’d go and have a look.

Steve and his friend were almost spellbound by what they saw and both appreciated the skills of those who were operating their car around the makeshift track.

Steve indicated later that he’d like to save up in order to purchase his own car but my wife and I suggested he first seek advice from some of the members of the RDRCCC. Fortunately Stephen agreed.

And that’s where something wonderful happened in Roxby comes in because I was with my son

when he went back to the Mitre 10 car park the following Sunday afternoon.

I was also with my son when he spoke with three members of the RCC club.

Stephen had already done a bit of research on the internet as to what kind of RC car he would like to purchase and he had a print out of the car he had in mind.

I introduced Steve to Darren who is not only a foundation member of the club, but has had an interest in RC cars from around the same age as my son.

Darren was fantastic.

He immediately stopped what he was doing and gave his full attention to what my son was asking him.

It was a moving experience to see a fellow dad give such quality time to my son and it was equally moving to hear Darren pass on some knowledge of RC cars that would spare my son the pain of purchasing the wrong kind of car.

Darren introduced Steve to Phil who is also a club member and Phil endorsed much of what Darren had already said.

oxby Downs local John Read is packing up and making the move to his property in Secret Rocks near Kimba after spending over 20 years in town.

Having moved to Roxby Downs in 1989, this local ecologist has been strongly involved in researching and protecting the environment surrounding the Olympic Dam mine.

John is the author of the award winning book Red Sand, Green Heart which was inspired by many of his environmental experiences surrounding Roxby Downs “Someone asked me the other day ‘are you leaving because you said in your book if you weren’t happy with the mine’s environmental performance you’d leave?’ and I guess that’s pretty much it,” John told The Monitor.

“For 18 years I was really proud of the environmental achievements (of Western Mining Corporation) as they gradually embraced the philosophy that mines could and should be responsible for more environmental and social positives than negatives”.

When pushed, John pointed out that withdrawal from their championing role at Arid Recovery to a hands-off sponsorship arrangement and failing to continue trialling environmentally sustainable alternative land uses on their pastoral stations, are two of the concepts John believes

BHP Billiton has not embraced.

Despite John’s recent frustrations he admits he is sad to be leaving town.

“I spent half my life here and have really enjoyed it,” he said.

“I have mixed feelings about leaving but I’m also looking forward to a new chapter.”

John and his family will continue their environmental work at Secret Rocks, their large scrub block on Eyre Peninsula, with their “modest little humpy” reliant upon solar power and rain water.

“It will be really good to move on and Katherine and I are excited about starting a new project.”

Katherine Moseby was instrumental in the establishment of Arid Recovery and has managed the awardwinning conservation initiative for most of its 11 year history.

John and Katherine are expecting another child within a fortnight, which will certainly heighten their sense of a new beginning.

John confesses he will miss the sunshine and vast horizons the Roxby Downs landscape provides, Tuesday night basketball, kids sport, his research and involvement with Arid Recovery and, of course, the people.

“The way the town gets behind charities and helps people in need is an aspect of living in a small community that I have really enjoyed.”

Having had a number of enjoyable experiences living in Roxby Downs, John shared a few with The Monitor.

after the Curdimurka Balls to fundraise for the Flying Doctor Service in the early 90s and Pete Paisley’s Boogie in the Bush shows were really rewarding, exciting and good fun,” he said.

“Being involved in the Environment Forum and getting new initiatives like responsible cat laws and energy and water-saving programs started has been rewarding.”

But not surprisingly his most vivid recollection was from Arid Recovery.

“Last spring I had seen the first distinctive little tracks of the endangered western barred bandicoot along transects in one section of the Reserve that I have surveyed for native critters over the last decade.

“The other day I was recounting these same transects and I counted over 90 bandicoot tracks – it was like a gold prospector stumbling across the mother load.

“I thought back to when we jogged to Woomera and then walked to Curdimurka to raise money to bring 8 of these tiny bandicoots across from one of their last refuges on a Western Australian island.

“To see them doing so well out here now is a highlight that Katherine and I will cherish forever.”

A farewell was held for the Read family last weekend to see them off as they departed Roxby Downs yesterday John Read with wife Katherine and daughters Layla and Elke on their last day in Roxby Downs. to begin their next big adventure.

Club renovation update Bottle drive R

oxby Downs Community Club, which is currently undergoing major renovations, is looking great.

Manager Stev Ellard says he is impressed with how it looks so far and can’t wait to see the final result.

“I can picture it in my head,” he said.

“I had a good look around, it’s all coming into place; it’s very good.”

Stev said construction is on track and they are expecting everything to be finished on schedule.

A bottle drive held by scouts raises much needed money for the bushfire appeal.

The Roxby Downs Scouting Group recently held a bottle-drive fundraiser for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal, which resulted in them raising a total of $6,114.

The bottle drive was a huge success, and coupled with the BHP Billiton Matched giving donation, will see double the amount being donated by this fundraiser to the bushfire victims on behalf of Roxby Downs Scout Group.

All funds will be donated directly to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal.

The Roxby Scout Group wishes to kindly thank all people who donated bottles and cans, their time and assistance in ensuring the success of the fundraiser.

The Roxby Downs Community Club renovations are progressing well, with the final result still a picture in Manager Stev Ellard’s mind.

Scout leaders learn new skills

A

collection of Scout leaders travelled to Roxby Downs last fortnight to attend a training weekend that would see them gain new skills to teach the youngsters.

Two trainers from Scouts SA, Dennis Marshall and Julie Dauk, hosted a collection of sessions that saw the leaders camp out at the Horse Race Course.

Leaders from Wirrabara, Woomera and Roxby Downs combined for the weekend, learning new skills and refreshing old ones.

“The group melded very well together,” commented Joeys Branch Commissioner Julie Dauk.

“It’s really good to see people of different groups getting on well together.”

Roxby Downs Scouts Group Leader,

Scott Martin said the weekend went off without a hitch.

“We thought there might be a bit of rain but it was lovely,” he said.

The group learned a collection of skills such as GPS training, Knotting, Health and Hygiene training, Outdoors and Environment training and Camp Preparation.

These skills will allow the Scout leaders to provide detail and knowledgeable advice and leadership to their younger counterparts.

Branch Commissioner Julie stated the Scout training would definitely continue at Roxby Downs in the future as they would love to come back to town.

“We’ll be back to get the leaders trained up,” she said.

Op Flinders needs community support

Operation Flinders is on again, with ten male students from Roxby Downs Area School taking part in an eight day hike through the Flinders Ranges.

The program, first run in 2008, has been a huge success, with the first group, a collection of local young ladies, braving the elements to further their personal development.

It’s the boys turn this year, who will depart on August 5 and return on August 12.

RDAS teacher Chris Jones and a still to be selected community member will be accompanying the boys on their journey as mentors.

The program is once again being funded by BHP Billiton however there is still a need for community aid in the form of fuel, cash and four-wheel-drive vehicle donations.

“If anyone can offer us cash or donate their vehicles or themselves as drivers, that would be great,” said coordinator Scott Sauerwald.

The program will be run the same as last year, with the boys completing tasks such as abseiling, repelling, problem solving and bush craft to name a few and will also be required to carry their own bedding, food and clothing on their back for the entirety of the program.

Last year saw a group of girls participate in the program and 2009 will see boys participate, so how different does Scott think this year will be compared to 2008?

“I think with the boys there will be more bravado involved, so of a ‘this will be easy’ attitude whereas the girls were a bit more apprehensive about it.”

“The boys are going to be in for a shock, it really does push the boundaries and tests where they are at and where they want to be.

“It will be helpful for the rest of their lives in focusing on their goals and what they want.

“It’s a really good cause and it is very beneficial for the community.”

The boys will be involved in a briefing on Thursday where the girls from last year and the program coordinators will share their experiences and what to expect.

“Over the years we hope to develop a network of people who have been involved which will benefit them and allow them to pass on their experiences to the community.”

CareerSpeak 2009

areerSpeak was held last week, with a collection of different speakers explaining to community members what is required to enter their field and what employers are looking for.

Coordinator Juliette Demaine commended CareerSpeak, saying it was a high value event for those who attended.

“We connected a handful of students to some very key people in terms of their careers, including some mentoring opportunities to highly skilled professionals not usually available to country youth,” said Juliette.

Higher Education The opening session of CareerSpeak on Monday was well attended with parents and students eager to hear about their opportunities to enter career paths through further education.

Representatives from TAFE SA and all the Adelaide Universities set up display stalls, as did Business SA, talking about careers in apprenticeships and traineeships.

The attendees were able to listen to the representatives speak on each of the areas which concluded with question and answer sessions. The participants were also able to talk informally with the advisors after the session.

Hospitality and Fitness Tuesday saw speakers from Regency Tafe and Port Adelaide Football Club.

Tony Adey from Regency Tafe gave an intriguing insight into the many pathways of hospitality and the many benefits of Regency Tafe as a provider.

Darren Adamson, Youth Development Officer of Port Adelaide Football Club, also gave a very exciting insight into the huge array of careers in allied sports, including those which might be available to people who may not possess elite sporting abilities.

Both speakers helped open the audiences’ eyes to some unique opportunities that they may not have previously considered.

The Arts and Defence Wednesday’s line up saw the theatrette almost packed full as filmmaking professionals and Defence Force recruitment officers addressed the audience.

The first speaker for the night, Dale Ross, is the founder of video production company Young Australia Productions.

Dale grew up in a small town, desired to get to the city as quickly as he could and attended university.

Like many young adults entering the big wide world, Dale had no idea what he wanted to do with his life.

“People go to Uni for a lot of different reasons, I went for the lifestyle,” Dale said.

Dale’s passion lay in the theatre, or so he thought and he pursued a career on the state.

He soon found out however that what he really wanted to do was make films and so, with that burning desire, Dale began Young Australia Productions.

“Let nothing get in the way of a good story,” is the motto of Dale’s company and he urged the audience to take control of their dreams, own what they are doing and enjoy your work.

“There are four things people look for in a job: achievement, recognition, structure and freedom.

“If you don’t have these things, people will move on and if you can bring them to a job, you will also become very employable.”

The audience was also treated to a speech from Australian filmmaker Mojgan Khadem.

Mojgan is a screenwriter and script supervisor, having created her own feature film and is in the process of writing a second.

Mojgan spoke about the process involved in making films, saying there was a lot of chaos involved and that you have to be patient.

Like Dale, her advice for entering the industry was simple.

“If you want to enter the field, have a good story – it doesn’t matter how you make it, if it’s a good story people will like it,” Mojgan said.

“You don’t get into the arts to make money but if you tell a good story it will make money.”

According to Mojgan, the film industry is for people who are extraordinary and she advised budding filmmakers to listen to their emotions, make connections with people in the industry and find a mentor.

Concluding Wednesday’s presentations was a talk from the Australian Defence Force, who advises the audience on what to expect, how to get involved and what the salary is like.

One option Navy Petty Officer Corbin Dingle stressed to the students was the Gap year program.

“There is only a one year commitment to find out if a career in the armed forces is for you, which people find better than having to sign up for a four or six years term.”

BHP Billiton and GEG The final night of CareerSpeak saw its worst turnout yet, with only a handful of audience members attending.

Maya Chaustowski, a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer at BHP Billiton, addressed the audience about the benefits of working with the company.

She stressed the point that there are lots of career options within the mine company and spoke of her journey into the industry.

Maya originally wanted to be an environmental scientist but was persuaded to attempt engineering and studied at Uni SA, which she recommends to anyone.

Maya had the opportunity to study overseas in Canada, which she found thoroughly enjoyable and applied for several jobs in the mining industry once graduating from University.

“I had a lot of job rejections, which I think is good because it teaches you that you don’t always get what you want,” she said.

Maya was finally employed by BHP Billiton and has never looked back.

“I found where I wanted to go in life, through no direct path, and realised there is no such thing as a wrong decision.”

Marie Jackson of BHP Billiton also addressed the audience, outlined a number of different career options within BHP Billiton.

“We have over 80,000 employees and 147 sites around the world and there is no limitation with what you can do with BHP Billiton,” she said.

what employers look for in a candidate: teamwork, communication, problem solving skills, initiative and enterprise, planning skills, self management, learning ability and technology skills.

She also advised people to get out and be seen through community involvement because a referee will have more to say about someone who is always out there than someone who sits in the corner doing nothing.

Tony Place of Career Employment Group outlined a number of opportunities that arise for people who complete a trade.

“Very soon we will be able to fly from Australia to New York in two hours, spend the weekend there and be back home in time for work on Monday,” he said.

This is just one of the projects available to tradespeople and the possibilities are endless.

CEG apprentice Josh Coombes also spoke of his life as an apprentice, going from a Pizza Hut employee to a ‘Sparky’ and all the opportunities that opened for him.

The night was concluded with a prize draw for the students who attended the various talks throughout the week.

Sadly there were only a small collection of students in attendance on Thursday night, which meant several people were ineligible for the prizes.

he Strong Young Women’s Group in Andamooka is proving to be a venture well funded, according to program coordinator Julie Posten.

BHP Billiton provided a grant to the program, which sees a collection of young women in Andamooka, aged between 12 and 16, learning a collection and practical and life skills.

“There are lots of young girls who miss out of life skills so we wanted to provide a casual setting for them to learn,” said Julie.

On the opening night, the girls gave each other a make over, learning the subtle art of beauty and how to take care of your appearance.

The program’s first session saw members of Triple J’s show ‘Hack’ film the experience, which was a great opportunity for the girls to get their faces out to the world.

The program is only scheduled to run for six sessions and will see a number of issues facing young women addressed.

Police Officer Belinda Thomas will be speaking to the group about legal issues, such as drinking and driving ages, authority issues and domestic violence.

“As adults you assume kids know this information they don’t necessarily do,” said Julie.

Community Health Nurse Petra Noble will address the girls in anoth-

er session about women and sexuality and another session will see a “Trinny and Susannah” body and fashion lesson, which Julie believes will be fun for the girls.

Although the program is only funded for six sessions, Julie would love to see it continue into the future.

“It would be great if we did get extra funding because we’d go into more of a leadership focus rather than a body image focus.

“It would be about teaching the girls to be more active in the community so we would probably do something like a project that would benefit the community.”

he Andamooka Rural Children’s Centre would like to remind the public about their childcare, preschool and family programs.

The childcare centre operates a small long day care service which runs between 7.30am and 5pm, though hours can be extended to suit family needs.

The preschool also offers an excellent program for families, catering to children between ages 3-5.

Satellite installations begin

Stress Down Day encourages participants to wear their slippers to work or school, or do something else to stress down, and raise money for Lifeline.

This support service offers emotional support to over 1,200 people everyday, all year round. Latest MANPAD tested at Woomera Man Portable Air Defence system (MANPAD) are amongst the most effective weapons on the planet.

Used as a weapon to shoot down any type of aircraft from a fighter to a helicopter to an airliner these weapons changed the course of the war during the soviet war in Afghanistan.

The latest version son the MANPAD’s, a swedish built RBS-70 short-range laser-guided surface-to-air missile, has ungone testing at the Woomera range over the past month.

A three-man team operates the weapon and the key operator receives his targeting instructions from a combat control terminal.

Once the target is identified and acquired, the operator engages the main laser beam and fires.

The missile flies along the laser beam and, provided the operator’s aim is steady and the missile is within 30m of the target, it has a kill rate of 95 per cent.

Alcorn is a man who is credited as being at the heart of many ‘head snapping’ changes in the media and is predicting that our world population will top out at 10 billion and then being to decline.

This will enter us into a new world of possibilities, one that cannot rely on the ingrown flawed methods of the past.

It will lead to a new way of thinking that Alcorn refers to as the ‘next enlightenment’.

It will be a chance to plan for a new future thankfully without the destructive mirror images of the past.

Good news and bad news - youth drug use The bad news is Kids Helpline has revealed an increase in young people reporting drug and alcohol use at high risk levels.

“The good news” says Kids Helpline General Manager Wendy Protheroe “ that the proportion of calls about drug use has declined in the last few years but that contacts from young people who are using frequently or at high risk levels has noticeably increased”.

“Among young people contacting Kids Helpline about their use of alcohol and drugs, 21 percent were experimenting or were occasional users in 2004 and this has decreased to 16 percent in 2008,” Ms Protheroe said.

“While counsellors are dealing more with young people in their late teens, they are also speaking with more young people who frequently use drugs including alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines (including methamphetamine), tobacco and ecstasy.

“With more young people tending to use drugs and alcohol excessively they are placing themselves at serious risk of harm.”

“Many young people know they need help and they can get it by calling us.

Unfortunately, although we operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we can only take so many calls,” she said.

“In 2008 nearly 500,000 young people tried to contact our counsellors, but we could only talk to about 60 percent of those who called.”

Ms Protheroe said that the social cost to the Australian community of substance abuse if unaddressed is enormous.

“I think I will miss the freedom; you have a lot of time to spend on whatever you like out here as you don’t waste time commuting to work or travelling to places like you would in a bigger town or city,” she said.

“You get to spend more time do-

ing important things like spending time with friends and family and I think that’s what makes this community so close.”

The girls plan to leave Roxby on August 3 at which point they will go there separate ways, and whilst Jess heads off home to Canada for a few months to attend her sister’s wedding, Holly is travelling to South America and intends to take life step by step from there.

Holly and Jess also share fond memories, saying they both think Roxby Races contributed to some of their more enjoyable moments during their time in Roxby Downs.

“Roxby races, it was always the best day because all your friends and everyone you know are all in

the same place; I don’t think that I ever stood in one place longer than a minute,” Jess said.

Holly expanded on Jess’s statement, adding she hopes this year’s races will be one to remember.

“I am hoping this year will be even better as it will be my last weekend in Roxby,” she said.

Jess concluded by saying thankyou to everyone who made Roxby Downs such a big part of her life.

“If anybody needs a place to stay in Canada…look me up,” she added.

Holly simply added that during Mexican parties, holes end up in walls…

Ingredients (serves 6) - Melted butter, to grease - 6 (about 1kg) granny smith apples, peeled, cored, thickly sliced - 220g (1 cup) caster sugar - 60ml (1/4 cup) water - 1 cinnamon stick - 150g frozen blackberries, thawed according to packet directions, drained on paper towel - Vanilla ice-cream (optional), to serve - Crumble topping - 55g (1/4 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar - 50g unsalted butter, at room temperature - 2 tbs plain flour - 5 granita biscuits (Arnott's brand), crushed - 2 tbs rolled oats - 2 tbs cornflakes - 1 1/2 tbs shredded coconut

Method

. Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush a 1.25-litre (5-cup) ovenproof dish with melted butter to grease. . Place the apples, sugar, water and cinnamon stick in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil over a medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low, simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon, for 10 minutes or until apple slices are tender but retain their shape. . Meanwhile to make the crumble topping, place the sugar, butter and flour in a medium bowl. Use your fingertips to rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the biscuits, oats, cornflakes and coconut.

. Drain apple mixture and discard cinnamon stick. Spread half the apple mixture over the base of the greased dish. Scatter half the blackberries over the apple mixture. Repeat with another layer of apple mixture and blackberries. . Spoon crumble mixture evenly over top and bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with vanilla ice-cream, if using.

Each painting had the artists name and the title of the painting leaving those who attended the exhibition amazed by each artists creative interpretation of mermaids, dinosaurs, chickens and Mums to name a few of the subject matters.

While the inspiration came from the children, the cleverness of the concept was all the Early Learning Group.

Michelle Stephens said, “It has been a wonderful exercise, the children had a great time creating the art and learning in the process and we have created a social event which has bought many of

our families together.

Our families are very important to us so that has been an important part of the day.”

Intertwined into the day was a raffle which helped with fundraising and parents could purchase a voucher which allowed them to take the paintings home.

Mel said that the success of the Early Learning Group continues to grow with 37 families having children who attend and vacancies which occur when children leave to attend kindergarten are filled immediately by new children .

New consumer credit laws

The Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) who have been in intense consultation with the Federal Government for 5 years have hailed the new laws.

MFAA CEO Phil Naylor said the new laws reflected the key issues the MFAA had raised on behalf of its members for efficient regulation and consumer protection.

“These laws demonstrate our commitment to MFAA members and borrowers; they ensure proper protection for consumers and the exclusion of rogue operators from the lending industry,” Mr Naylor said.

In its simplest form, the new laws will: • introduce a licensing regime for credit

“The MFAA welcomes these laws – laws we helped to shape – particularly the provision that allows flexibility in the way obligations are applied to licence holders according to the nature, scale and complexity of their operations,” he said.

“This is crucial; the vast majority of businesses covered by the legislation are one person or very small broking operations.

“We express concern, however, that the ‘responsible lending’ aspects of the bill will be delayed by 12 months, as MFAA members are already complying with these provisions.

“We look forward to working closely with Financial Services Minister Chris Bowen to implement this new legislation.

Surprisingly, the reason Commodores are so popular is not because they are easy to steal, it is because they are a victim of their own popularity.”

Professional thieves target them so they can cash in on strong demand for spare parts, said Mr Sopinski Corporate Affairs Manager for AAMI. An analysis of AAMI insurance claims shows Commodore makes and models accounted for 62 per cent of the top 15 vehicles stolen from AAMI customers last year.

The 1999 Holden VT Commodore Executive took out top spot with 150 theft claims, followed by the 1998 Holden VT Commodore Berlina (131 theft claims).

Only one Ford model – the 1999 AU Falcon Forte – made the list, along with three Hyundai Excel Sprint models (1996, 1997 and 1999), the 2002 Toyota Rav 4 Cruiser, and the 1999 Nissan Pulsar SS. AAMI’s data is similar to figures from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRD) which reported three times as many Commodores than Falcons were stolen in the first three months of 2009.

From January-March, 1767 Commodores were stolen compared to 507 Falcons and 288 Hyundai Excels.

Mr Sopinski said it wasn’t surprising 1990’s makes and models featured so prominently on the list, nor was the prevalence of Holden Commodores.

“Vehicle theft has dropped remarkably over the past 10 years, primarily because of advances in technology and theft deterrents such as engine immobilisers increasingly a standard feature on new cars,” he said.

Mr Sopinski said driver efforts to make cars harder to steal through active and passive theft deterrent methods was paying dividends, based on insurance, police and other industry figures showing a dramatic decline in car theft.

Zeppy’s Reviews Movie Review: Pride and Glory

Family or duty?

The line between duty and responsibility, between honour and family, finds itself trampled over in this gripping tale about police corruption and family loyalty. How far would you go for your family? Would you steal to provide for them, or would you turn them in for the sake of the law? These are the questions asked in Pride and Glory.

The story follows a family of police officers in New York in their search for a drug dealer who murdered four officers in a bust gone wrong. The officers worked under the command of Francis Tierney Jr. (played by Noah Emmerich). Francis is a straight hitting, honest cop with an overt sense of loyalty, that seems to get him into more trouble than it’s worth.

Francis’s brother-in-law, Jimmy (played by Colin Farrell), also serves in the NYPD and was close friends with the slain officers. Their deaths hit him hard and his desire for vengeance outweighs his desire for justice and so leads him on a journey of violence to find the man who slaughtered his friends.

Francis’s younger brother, Ray (played by Edward Norton), is a washed out cop with no desire to continue on the streets. He is content to spend the remainder of his career behind the safety of a desk, that is, until Francis convinces him to join the task force assigned to catching the killer. Ray’s instincts are great and his compassion is evident, propelling him into a conspiracy that would turn his life upside down.

As Ray begins his search for the killer, a network of corrupt police is revealed, leading Ray straight to his brother’s precinct. Francis’s loyalty for his

men outweighs his desire for procedure and as Ray comes to him for help, Francis attempts to uncover the corruption ring off the record. Discovering a group of renegade officers who control drug dealers, hire out their badges and eliminate competitors for the right price, Francis finds himself in hot water as he tries to weed out the problem without ruining his friend’s lives.

But when family is involved, how far will Ray and Francis go to uphold justice?

Jimmy’s desire of vengeance sees him using some rather unscrupulous methods to obtain information, such as threatening to iron a newborn baby in front of his parents. How far is too far and what are the consequences of such actions? Jimmy, Ray and Francis soon find out and it’s a price none of them want to pay.

Pride and Glory stars a collection of high profile actors who certainly earn their pay cheques.

Edward Norton plays the morally righteous Ray superbly, not once becoming preachy as he fights with his sense of loyalty and duty. Colin Farrell is, in a word, scary. His conviction as the vengeful detective is excellent, truly allowing the audience to believe he is both dangerous and loving. Noah Emmerich portrays his character Francis fantasti-

cally, really delving into the emotional consequences of putting loyalty over the law. But it is Jon Voight who naturally steals the screen.

Playing the drunken, retiring police father of the three brothers, his determination to keep his family together and out of trouble displays the lengths any parent would go to in order to protect their family.

Pride and Glory is a film that will captivate you from the beginning and propel you into a world of violence, corruption, honour and family as truths are revealed that no loved one should ever uncover.

This is a drama that does not preach, does not insult the intelligence of the audience and certainly delivers a great story.

Thoroughly entertaining themes, realistically flawed character and moral ambiguity make Pride and Glory a film for those with the love of a good story and great character development.

Book Review: Long Lost

Genius in print Harlan Coben is the master of crime thrillers, there is no denying it, and he proves this once again in his new book Long Lost. Myron Bolitar, the charismatic sports agent, is back in his newest adventure that sees him once again thrown into a world of mystery and intrigue as he embarks on a journey to help an old friend.

Out of the blue, Myron receives a phone call from an old friend. The message is simple: Come to Paris, I need you. The message is from Terese Collins, a former news anchor whom Myron met ten years ago when he fled to a tropical island to escape the pain of loss. Terese, just as damaged as Myron once was, joined him as they wallowed in their self pity together, blocking it out with nights of passion.

Ten years later, Myron has moved on with his life; the same cannot be said for Terese. But Myron, always the concerned friend, quickly hops on a plane to the city of lights to see what the problem is.

When he arrives, he discovers Terese’s former husband, Rick, is the reason behind her mysterious call. Rick had called Terese to Paris for something important, however, before Myron can learn

any more, he is dragged into French Police Headquarters and questioned over the murder of Rick Collins.

Quickly realising he is innocent, Myron is released but not before learning there was DNA left at the scene of the crime: the DNA of Terese Collins. Preliminary tests, however, confirm an impossible scenario, the DNA belongs to the offspring of Teresa and Rick: the daughter Terese lost in a car accident ten years previous.

Myron is suddenly thrust into a world of mystery and confusion as he attempts to uncover the truth behind Terese’s child. Did she really die in a horrific car accident a decade ago, or was it all a fraud? The police report is filled with holes, Mossad Agents are hot on Myron’s tail and a terrorist organisation wants him dead. Can Myron figure out the truth before it gets him killed? The answers will shock you to the core as each page digs you deeper into a mystery that could change the world.

The genius of Harlan Coben’s books is their simplicity. The writing is easy to follow, the descriptions are simple yet intricate and the story is beyond captivating. The characters Coben develops are all real people, characters with in depth backgrounds and flawed personalities that make them extremely believable and interesting.

Long Lost is the ninth book in the Myron Bolitar series and while one does not have

to have read the previous books, it would be an advantage – not to mention well worth it!

The same characters everyone loves from the series are back, including the psychotic and fiercely loyal best friend Win, the flamboyant bisexual business partner Esperansa and the charming giant of an assistant Big Cindy.

New characters reveal themselves throughout this book, adding to the depth of Coben’s imaginary genius and the stunningly gorgeous Terese Collins (first appearing in The Final Detail) gets her story told.

Long Lost is a fantastic read, gripping from the first page and never letting up until the final sentence. Harlan Coben’s works are for everyone with an interest in a good mystery, a love of flawed and realistic characters and excellent writing. Prepare for a thrill ride that will keep you awake into the early hours of the morning in anticipation.

The Verdict: 9/10

Sabbath our 5 year old Dobermann Pinscher has been missing since Tuesday 16th June when he got out of our gate. We live on Stuart Road. He is friendly, and approachable. DOG REGISTRATION Dog registrations renewals are due and payable from 1st July 2009. Registrations are for a 12 month period, in the financial calendar year. (July 09 – June 2010), NOT 12 months calendar year.

You will have until 31st August to register; failure to pay on time will incur an expiation fee.

Please also ensure that all dogs over the age of three months are registered, failure to comply can again result in an $80.00 Expiation Notice being issued.

A Grade Premiers Benders celebrate their win with a few drinks at the Club.

The volleyball season has come to an end once more, with the grand ďŹ nal held on Monday June 22.

After separating the teams into A and B grade competitions the Association saw some interesting competition in the ďŹ ght for the win.

Congratulations go to Benders who won the A Grade ďŹ nals and Overload who won B Grade.

The volleyball committee is currently regrouping to ensure the continuation of the game in Roxby Downs.

he Port Adelaide Football Club continues to lead the way in community programs within sport in Australia, paying a most welcomed visit to the local schools.

Port Power’s Warren Tredrea and Brett Ebert arrived in Roxby on Tuesday morning, along with Thunderbirds players Geva Mentor and Kate Beveridge, who headed to the schools to help educate the students.

At Saint Barbara’s Parish School

they spoke to the children about respecting other people and the environment, as well as encouraging them to live healthy lifestyles and pay attention to their education.

The revered players then proceeded to Roxby Downs Area School to encourage self esteem and respect in the older students.

As part of the Power Community Youth Program, players visit selected schools annually, currently attending over 170 schools every year across South Australia, promoting positive messages to students.

The club is committed to raising funds for a disease which aects thousands of Australian women each year.

The ‘Tee O for Breast Cancer Research’ days, held on July 1 and 4, are an initiative of the Breast Cancer Institute of Australia (BCIA) to aid in the prevention of breast cancer.

Roxby cricketer to play Barmy Army

oxby Downs local Graham Warren has been fortunate enough to be selected to play for the Australian Fanatics against the Barmy Army in a 20/20 cricket match in London this year.

The match is set to precede the 2009 Ashes Series, which Graham will also be attending.

“It’s always been a lifelong dream of mine to go to Lords because I love my cricket, so Bronnie came up with the idea of incorporating a holiday with the Ashes,” Graham told The Monitor.

Being selected to play for the Australian Fanatics only happened by chance, as Graham explains.

“We had trouble getting tickets because the Ashes are sold out fairly early as the seating

there holds like 30,000 people, not like the MCG. “Bronnie was lucky enough to get onto the Fanatics and got some tickets through them for the five days of the test match.”

On the eve of the test match, the Australian Fanatics and the Barmy Army will face off against each other on Risden Oval in a 20/20 game that is set to be a day of fun and excitement.

There were no prerequisites for Graham to play in the match, and since he believes most players will be over 50, the game should be more of a social event than anything else.

“They’ll have a good time, enjoy the cricket and support in good spirit so it’s going to be a lot of fun at the game and after I hope.

“I’m not shy of having a bit of fun myself so I’ll probably fit in pretty well with them, I reckon.

“When I’m about 74 and have a grandkid sitting on my laps and he says ‘hey Pop, did you

play cricket?’ I’ll be able to say ‘yeah I played in London’, which would be a nice thing to be able to say so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Graham, who used to play A Grade cricket for the Riverland and is heavily involved in the cricket in Roxby Downs, is unsure how well he will do during the game, though takes solace in the fact that if he makes no runs, no one in Australia need ever know.

And how will Australia fair in the Ashes?

“I reckon they’re going to be very even,” says Graham.

“England is going through a rebuilding stage and we’re definitely going through a rebuilding stage so I think it will be a good series.

“Let’s hope the test goes for the full five days. It would be a bit of a disappointment of it doesn’t but that’s the luck of the draw I suppose.”

The Monitor wishes Graham and the Australia Fanatics all the best in the 20/20 match against the Barmy Army.

oxby Downs football is sadly becoming a predictable game; the strong teams desecrate the weaker sides without mercy and display very little competition for the spectators.

This was the case with both matches last week.

The undefeated Olympic Dam Devils faced off against the struggling Andamooka Roos is what proved to be nothing short of a slaughter.

The Devils took the first goal of the match straight out of the ruck, facing no opposition from Andamooka.

Fortunately the Roos picked up their game slightly, forcing OD to work for their next score.

The Roos almost managed to take the ball to goal but lost control to the Devils, who raced back to their forward lines to score their second goal of the game.

OD suffered their first injury of the match not far into the first quarter as Steven Westlake was stretchered off the field due to a knee injury.

It did not hinder the Devil’s play, however, as their third goal of the match was scored shortly after Westlake was taken off.

Some fumbling with the ball on OD’s part allowed the Roos to gain possession and, using it wisely, they took the ball straight to goals.

A series of strong tackles ensued as the Devils scored another three consecutive goals with barely any interruption beginning the question: what are the Roos doing?

Andamooka had barely seen their end of the field however thanks to a 50 metre free kick, were able to score themselves a much needed goal.

OD quickly answered the Roos with a quick and easy goal their ninth for the quarter to lead with 9-3 57 to Andamooka’s 3-0 18.

The second quarter saw play interrupted as the OD scored a point, sending the ball over the boundary fence.

Several minutes passed as the ball was retrieved but were soon made up as the Devils again took possession to score themselves another goal.

The second quarter saw little improvement to the Andamooka’s scores as they fought hard for the ball but were unable to take control long enough to score.

OD kicked several goals throughout the quarter, allowing few opportunities for the Roos to take control.

gle point for the entire quarter, ending it with 3-1 19 to OD’s 13-7 85.

The third quarter was barely any better for the Roos, who had all but lost the game by the middle of the previous quarter.

Andamooka picked up their play slightly to provide a series of fast tackles but were no match for the Devils.

Five consecutive goals by OD saw their lead increase, only breaking the monotony of their perfect scores to kick a point.

The Roos too were able to score another point during this quarter with their fumbling of the ball was not helping them in the slightest.

Olympic Dam concluded the third quarter with 21-9 130 to Andamooka’s 3-2 20.

Continuing with the trend of the previous quarters, Andamooka managed to score only one more point for the game as the Devils continued their destructive reign.

Olympic Dam broke the repetitiveness of the game by kicking goals and points but it was hardly entertaining to the crowd as their slaughter continued.

The Roos had all but given up as Olympic Dam proved once again that they are the stronger side, ending the game with a destructive 31-14 200 to Andamooka’s dismal 3-3 21.

The devastation continues

he second match of the day unfurled in much the same fashion as the first as the Competitive Hornridge Magpies played the struggling Coober Pedy Saints.

The magpies began the match with a collection of points, displaying a lack of accuracy when kicking for goal.

After a series of points, Hornridge finally managed to score that all important first goal of the game.

Hornridge players read the field well, always in the perfect place to intercept the ball from Coober Pedy, who managed to score their first and only point of the quarter.

As play continued the Magpies kicked a succession of goals to keep them in the lead.

Try as they might Coober Pedy were unable to take control, constantly fumbling with the ball and proving to be no match for Hornridge, who easily surged past the Saint’s backline to score.

The second quarter saw the Saints pick up play as they scored their first goal straight out of the ruck.

It was quickly followed, however, by a goal from Hornridge, who were not allowing Coober Pedy to gain any standing.

Both sides displayed a series of hard tackles, with the Saints determined to take possession of the ball.

The Magpies solidified their lead with another bout of goals and the Saints fought hard to score themselves a few extra points.

The Saints tried hard to gain control of the game but were no match for Hornridge, who pushed through the backlines with considerable ease to score.

Half time began with the Magpies leading 13-11 89 to Coober Pedy’s 13 9.

Both teams played hard in the third quarter but it was Hornridge who emerged the stronger.

Constantly there to intercept the ball from the Saints, they surged forward to increase their lead ten-fold.

The Saints managed another goal as the clock ticked down but were unable to penetrate the Magpies backlines often.

What little opportunity the Saints had to score big butwere prevented getting any traction by an insistent Hornridge, who increased the pressure and subsequently decrease Coober Pedy’s accuracy.

The third quarter concluded with Hornridge continuing their lead with 20-14 134 to the Saints’ 2-7 19.

Much like the previous game, this match was over long before the final quarter commenced.

The Magpies displayed a fantastic array of hand work as Coober Pedy put up what little fight they had left, allowing Hornridge to take the ball to goals.

Not a single point was scored by Coober Pedy, who were preoccupied with defending their goals more than pressing forward to score.

A mixture of goals and points from Hornridge allowed them to increase their lead, much to the dissatisfaction of Coober Pedy, who lost the game with 2-7 19 to the Magpies 28-18 186.

Perhaps next weeks matches will see a more entertaining display of football as the more evenly matched Coober Pedy face off against Andamooka and Roxby plays Hornridge.
