Business as usual for local candidate
espite all the turmoil surrounding the Liberal leadership in recent weeks, newly endorsed Liberal candidate for Giles, Chad Oldfield says it’s “business as usual”. While Mr Oldfield was a strong advocate for Martin Hamilton-Smith, he told the Monitor in an exclusive interview last week prior to the leadership vote, he would support whoever the party elected. He said the disunity in the party room has had some effect, more so in Adelaide but here in the electorate of Giles it hasn’t stopped him from doing what he needs to do. “For me it’s business as usual. It’s me getting out meeting the people
and selling myself more than what’s going on in Adelaide. “It doesn’t matter if it’s Labor or Liberal these things pop-up all the time, so I am just taking the positive line and moving forward.” Mr Oldfield said the election of Isobel Redmond as the new Liberal leader is for those who are already voted into the parliament and not something for him to comment on. He said he will support Ms Redmond and so should all the other members of the Party. “It’s better we get it behind us and move forward and press the issues that are affecting the people in this state instead of what’s happening in the Party headquarters.” The Liberal candidate has no illu-

sions about the job ahead saying that each town in his huge electorate have their own issues. “For the State, water has to be the number one issue. It doesn’t matter that we are getting our water from the artesian basin, not does it when the desal plant goes in. Water security across the state is the biggest issue. We have not really felt the affects in Roxby but in the rest of the State they certainly have.” Mr Oldfield is concerned for the people of Giles who will be responsible to pay hefty increases in taxes because of the huge deficit the Rann Government is creating.
